Educational Tour of Ghana - 10 Days

I highly recommend Olive Travel and Tours. Our tour guide, “Prince,” was outstanding! We traveled to various historical and ancestral sites across Ghana. His support team at each site provided clear and essential information and facts. Our trip was a remarkable historical, cultural, and art experience! Thank you, Olive Travel and Tours John Obafemi and Yemaya Jones

Had an amazing time in Ghana! Prince is a great tour guide and gets you to experience as much of the culture as you can while you are there. Would suggest booking days after to just chill and enjoy the country as it’s very active tour and a lot of time spent traveling between activities.

Volunteer in Ghana

I had a wonderful time in Ghana with PMGY. The projects were interesting, the weekend trips were amazing and the people are the best. The people in the house, the drivers and the people in the projects are wonderful. They help in every situation and are always there for you. Also in the projects are people who help you and explain a lot of things to the volunteers. Also at the volunteering house you have always a great time with the people who are working or living there. I went to both of the weekend trips. They are awesome. The cape coast trip is perfect to relax and the one to Mole Nationalpark gives so much new experiences. Also I had a look at 3 projects. At the medical one I had a great time and saw 4 births. At the school project I met a lot of wonderful children and also in the orphanage it is great and a lot of fun with the children there. Kumasi (the city where the volunteer house is) is a wonderful city. Not to big and not to small. The people there are so wonderful, everyone wants to talk to you and they are very interested. Also I felt very safe there. You can do nice things in Kumasi. I enjoyed my time in Kumasi very much. I would like to go to Ghana with PMGY again and I can just recommend to do it. I am so thankful for my perfect time in Ghana.

Ghana, Togo, Benin - Voodoo and Tribal Festivals Tour

Ghana, Togo, Benin - Voodoo and Tribal Festivals

This was a fantastic tour. The sights and sounds were out of this world. Our tour leader, Nesi, was wonderful. Helpful, friendly, even tempered, eager to see that we all had a good time and at the same time keeping us on track to be where we needed to be when we needed to be. We had two guides – Confidence and Alex. Both were very good. Confidence seemed to be more a reactive guide, answering any questions we had. Alex was more proactive in that he pointed out interesting places without being asked. Both knew an enormous amount and spoke very good English. The trip itself was wonderful with some amazing surprises as well and everything on the itinerary, with a couple exceptions, being followed. Since this is an area not frequented by tourists that often some last minute changes were inevitable. Hotels were all OK. Clean and air conditioned rooms. Electricity was spotty at times. Internet access also varied from excellent to very poor. One night the power went out for the whole community and the night was quite hot, but chilly in the morning. For most of the trip the only option for dinner was the hotel. Food varied it its quality (local chickens are quite scrawny) and the waiting times were long – sometime over an hour between ordering and service. Menus also tended to be limited. Nesi helped with this as we ordered food on the road, and it was ready when we arrived. All of this was also true of the lunches. No one went hungry but I would recommend a stash of energy bars as a nice supplement. There is a lot of travel as we covered quite some distance on some less than smooth roads. But we never got stuck as all the drivers knew clearly what they were doing. It helped too that our traveling companions were all friendly and good natured. Just a wonderful trip. So glad we got to go. It will live in our hearts forever.

What people love about kumasi tours.

My experience was quite memorable. I was impressed mostly with the faces of the Ghanian people. Their faces radiate warmth, beauty & humility. I felt at peace being around them. I admire greatly their driving skills and their tolerance for each other. They are adept at sharing the roads & displaying a kind of respect for each other that is admirable whether one is driving, biking or walking. The places I toured were interesting, depressing as well as educational. Ghana is a developing country and I look forward to beholding its improvements in a few years.
I must say that it was definitely a wonderful experience! The best part was getting to know the other volunteers and creating wonderful friendships that I will definitely carry with me for life. Even just for that reason I would recommend this experience to anyone! On the other hand, I was a little less satisfied with the project. It certainly was interesting to observe how to work in psychiatry in such a different context. The problem was that the patient interviews were not in English but in Twi. Sometimes the nurses would explain and translate to me but other times there was no time between patients to explain or they didn't feel much like it.Also, sometimes they would call me 'Obrouni' and touch my skin and hair since I am a white person. One nurse also asked me to call her brother who lives in my country on the phone and all this made me feel very uncomfortable. So, I learned a lot from the project but I would say that was more like an internship than volunteering because I couldn’t give my help. So I was a little disappointed because I thought I was going to volunteer. Nevertheless, they listened to my complain and made me chan project accordingly to my needs. They are just so flexible and available for you. I appreciated so much. Another negative note was the food, maybe because I am used to eat very well, I didn't like the food and also it was very repetitive. Even more difficult were the hygienic conditions: the house is dirty, especially the kitchen and the bathroom. The smells are intense and hard to bear. Anyway, the weekend trip was great and I recommend it to everyone. Also, the staff people who live in the house are all very nice and very kind, especially always available for you! The people definitely made my experience. Although there were some downsides, I would suggest everyone this experience! It is challenging but also life changing :) if I could come back in time I would definitely do it again!

The Complete Travel Guide To Kumasi

Kumasi! Kumasi! Kumasi! Does the name ring a bell?

Yes! it does.

If it doesn’t, you can watch this video before you continue reading this piece.

Now the begging question is, is it the name alone?

I believe there is a lot more you have heard about this city and a lot more that you probably do not know. Actually, let me restart.

This article, as the title suggests, details the complete travel guide to Kumasi. Before I give you the rundown, can you guess some fun facts about Kumasi? Here are mine:

  • Kumasi is the second largest city in Ghana and is popularly known as the Garden City of West Africa because of the greenery.
  • The city boasts of very rich cultural heritage. No wonder the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) lists the city’s traditional buildings as part of the World Heritage sites since 1980. Actually, it is one of the few places in Ghana that feature proudly on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The others are classified under Forts and Castles in the Volta, Greater-Accra, Central and Western Regions.
  • Kumasi is also the seat of one of the powerful traditional rulers in the world. He is the King of the Ashanti Kingdom under the stool name Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. However, his influence and peace-keeping efforts know no bounds and have been well acclaimed globally.
  • Kumasi is the home of Africa’s football club of the century – Kumasi Asante Kotoko popularly known as the Porcupine Warriors.
  • It is one of the cities with the lowest cost of living. In fact, from rental of both residential and commercial properties to taking a cab, hotel bookings or shopping, no other place in Ghana beats the prices of goods and services in Kumasi.
  • Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), one of the prestigious universities in Africa is located in Kumasi.
  • There are very powerful indeginous names such as Prempeh, Opoku-Ware, Yaa Asantewaa, Osei Tutu, etc. associated with Kumasi.

Did you guess all these fun facts right?

How about I take you on an imaginary trip to Kumasi? As you read along, try picturing an ancient city that has been transformed by modern structures but has perfectly found a way to retain its antiquities.

Travel Guide To Kumasi

Now that we are through with the fun facts, let’s talk about our travel guide. The travel guide is categorized into four main parts.

We’ll first look at how to get to Kumasi. Second, get to know more about the people, the food, the language and the culture.

The third part of the travel guide looks at the top places to visit when you get to Kumasi and of course the finally what you should do in Kumasi. So here we go…

#1. How to get to Kumasi

So how can one travel to Kumasi?

Very simple but it depends on where you wish to travel from. Generally, you can travel to Kumasi by air and by road. You cannot travel by sea because Kumasi is not a coastal town unlike Accra, Tema, Sekondi-Takoradi and Cape Coast. Keep that in mind. No Sea in Kumasi – more on that some other day.

One thing you need to note is that the Kumasi Airport is currently being upgraded to host international flights. Until this upgrade is complete, if you want to travel to Kumasi and you wish to do so by air, you would have to land at Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

Ant then book a domestic flight from Accra to Kumasi.

It is not stressful though because domestic flights are very easy to book nowadays. And it takes maximum forty-five (45) minutes to make it to Kumasi from Accra by air. You can give it a try.

Again, if you wish to make the trip by road, it generally takes between four (4) to six (6) hours if your departure point is Accra. The same number of hours apply if your departure point is in the Twin City (Sekondi-Takoradi).

However, if your departure point is in Cape Coast or Elmina, it takes between three (3) to four (4) hours maximum to make it to Kumasi.

In the Northern part of Ghana, it takes a minimum of six (6) hours from Tamale to Kumasi and at least nine (9) hours from Wa and Bolgatanga respectively to Kumasi.

Most inter-city bus services operate transport services from any of the major cities in Ghana to Kumasi. VIP, O.A Travel and Tours, Inter-City STC and VVIP bus services come to mind so you shouldn’t have a problem scheduling your travel and getting a bus ticket for Kumasi. However, bear in mind that the fun part of your trip will be when you arrive.

The traditional bus system for inner city navigation in Kumasi is popularly known as Tro-Tro. How did you pronounce that?

Don’t worry, you will have a lot of teachers at your service to help you say it right and a lot more words so get your diary or notebook ready. What does a Tro-Tro look like?

They mostly  mini-vans, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter or 207 buses.

Still imagining how it looks like? Imagine no more. Just watch the intro of this video for a proper perspective.

How does a Tro-Tro operate?

There is usually a driver and a conductor who is popularly called “Mate” in local parlance. The conductor usually sticks his/her head out the window of the van whilst the vehicle is in motion and yells for passengers.

Passengers usually stand by the roadside at major bus terminals waiting for the Tro-Tro.

If a Tro-Tro is coming through and the “mate” yells the passenger’s destination then the passenger will give a signal for the “mate” to signal the driver to stop the car so that the passenger can hop in. It’s as easy as ABC and the trick has been tried and tested.

How are the fares collected on a Tro-Tro?

That is another interesting question. Practically, the conductor sits in the same compartment of the vehicle with the passengers so the conductor does the collection and gives a change if the amount paid and the destination fare are not in sync.

Please keep these questions in mind as you take a Tro-Tro ride through the city. I can provide you with more gist but I don’t want to spoil the fun so you make it a point to try it even if it is once.

Do your best to try the Tro-Tro service before you leave Kumasi. It is an experience you will never forget!

Despite the unique experience that the Tro-Tro shuttle system offers, it has its limitations.

Apart from the traffic situation which isn’t a nice experience, the Tro-Tros are limited in terms of the places you can visit with them. They mostly ply the main roads and not the inner suburbs.

Due to this, it is recommended that if you wish to properly navigate the city and its suburbs as well as visit all the interesting sites, the best way to do this is by using a cab (taxi) or an e-hailing service such as Uber and Bolt.

Cabs are a bit expensive compared to Tro-Tros but you can go everywhere with them even at odd hours unlike Tro-Tros that mostly work till about 11 pm.

#2. The people, the food, the language and culture

The people, the food, the language and the general culture of the city is at best conservative and trust me, I mean this as a compliment. Indeed, you will admire and praise the hospitality of the people of Kumasi. They are predominantly Ashantis and they hold their culture in high regard including their language – Asante Twi. Don’t get offended if everybody encourages you to speak the language and observe the culture, it’s all part of preserving the cultural heritage and that is why I indicated earlier that the people are very conservative and for good reason!

In terms of the food, oh you would love it! The chief food in most parts of Ghana is  Fufu. Do you know that it has its roots from Kumasi? And do you know that it is not pronounced Fufu but rather Fufuo? You should give it a try as soon as you arrive. Any major food outlet in Kumasi sells Fufuo. Just ask the hotel or the guest house where you will be lodging and they won’t hesitate at all to help you out. Just remember to say it right. They will teach you how to say it too. Apart from Fufu, there are other African and continental dishes that most food outlets serve. These include Banku and Tilapia, Gari and Beans (Red-Red), Rice and Stew, Waakye as well as Omotuo (Rice Balls). One other thing, for the dishes that are served with soup such as Fufu, Omotuo and Banku (sometimes), how about you ask for a signature soup such as Palm Nut Soup or even Groundnut Soup to go with it? Also, for the protein bit, please ask for the “intestines.” Trust me, you will enjoy any of the local dishes. It doesn’t mean the continental dishes aren’t as good. My stance is that if you visited the culture then you must taste the culture so kindly do this and thank me later. If you are a vegetarian trust me you are not left out in the protein department. Kumasi boasts of natural vegetarian dishes such as Mushroom, Beans and other edible natural plants. Give yourself a treat!

#3. Top places to visit when you get to Kumasi

When it comes to places to visit in Kumasi, believe me there are loads of interesting places. It is recommended that you try and visit as many places as possible so the caveat here is that the list below is not exhaustive. That said, below are the top places of interest that you need to visit while you are in Kumasi. They have been put together in no particular order:

Manhyia Palace

This is by far one of the most popular seats of a traditional leader in the world. The Palace serves as the official seat of Otufour Osei Tutu II, King of the Ashanti Kingdom. The building is a historical edifice rich with its cultural undertones. One key thing you will notice when you visit is that the structure communicates power, authority and wealth evidenced by the gold furnishings, the powerful statutes and the impressive Adinkra Symbols. Afraid that you will be used for rituals? Don’t worry we are not in the medieval period. The palace actually provides a tour guide for its teeming visitors from all walks of life. In fact, if you go to Kumasi and you don’t visit the Manhyia Palace then you haven’t been to Kumasi. Get a sneak peek of the Manhyia Palace and surrounding areas by watching this video .

Kejetia and Central Market

Are you wondering why a market is a place of interest to visit? Then wonder no more because the Kejetia and the Kumasi Central Market are no ordinary markets. They form the largest open-air market in West Africa. Together, both markets boast of over 20,000 shops and they receive thousands of customers and prospective customers on a daily basis. Another reason why you should visit Kejetia and Central Market is the variety of goods on display at very affordable prices. Interestingly, almost all the prices quoted in these markets are negotiable so go ahead and give it a try. You will learn the art of negotiation right there. In fact, you can easily find anything you are looking to buy under the sun when you visit these markets. The aesthetics too is worth mentioning. The buildings are very solid and signify an edifice that sits well with the culture of the Ashanti Kingdom. Wondering how the markets look like after the facelift? Click here .

The Rattray Park

Do you need a beautiful and refreshing place to relax and observe the scenery on a hot afternoon? Or you prefer a cool and serene place where you can feel the ambiance? Then the Rattray Park is the place to be. If you wish to properly visualize what I am talking about, click here and watch a drone footage of the Rattray Park and you would love it.

The Kumasi Fort

This place is an embodiment of the history of the Ghana Armed Forces. Be in awe when you see the guns, flags, historical pictures and other relics which speak to the history of the Gold Coast and the role the army played. Keep in mind that here too, you would need to pay for a guided tour. Even though this sneak peek will not quench your curiosity, try watching the video by clicking here and you will get a sense of what the Kumasi Fort is all about.

Lake Bosumtwi

Before you read about this rare natural find, click here to watch the video. The lake is not directly located in Kumasi but it is pretty close. It is about one hour drive from the heart of Kumasi and it is one of the largest lakes in Africa. Definitely Kumasi is an inner City for which reason it does not boast of an Ocean unlike other coastal cities. However, try making a trip to Lake Bosumtwi because it is not an ordinary water body and lakes are really scarce. Hence, once you make it to Kumasi, make it count by scheduling a trip to Lake Bosumtwi. Never forget, Tro-Tros go there and it is very affordable to take a trip there. You will also get the chance to see the outskirts of Kumasi. One spoiler though – the road to Lake Bosumtwi is one of the meandering and scary roads you will ever travel on in your lifetime. Enjoy the adventure!

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

This is one of the most serene university campuses you will ever visit. It boasts of impressive architectural structures. Its calmness and greenery is truly breath-taking. Don’t leave Kumasi without making a trip to Campus. How different is this campus from other campuses? Kindly watch the video and you will have an idea.

Ghana National Cultural Center

Just like the Manhyia Palace, the Ghana National Cultural Center located in Kumasi signifies a great cultural heritage. See a sneak peek here .

It is equipped with historical cultural artifacts. You can also purchase books and other materials about the history of the Ashanti Kingdom and Ghana in general. Again, you can purchase cultural artifacts including the impressive Kente Cloth, the Ahenema Slippers and other funeral regalia.

Kumasi Asante Kotoko

Don’t mistake this for a physical landmark for this is one of the prestigious football clubs in Africa. In fact, it has been adjudged the African club of the century by the African football governing body – the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Try and schedule a time to visit the Kumasi Sports Stadium during game days (mostly Sundays and mid-week) and watch the Porcupine Warriors play. Trust me, you won’t regret it. Their impressive fan base, the cultural connotations, the chanting and the pride is unmatched. Second-guessing? See for yourself the teeming and jubilant fans of Kumasi Asante Kotoko by watching this video .

Truly, I can go on and on talking about a lot of interesting places to visit in Kumasi but it won’t do justice to your curiosity unless you make a trip there.

#4. Final words

So there you have it. What are you waiting for? Don’t let this solid cultural and historical place of attraction hide in plain sight on your travel or vacation calendar. Get busy and plan a trip to the Garden City of West Africa and you will never regret it!

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

travel and tours in kumasi

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

travel and tours in kumasi

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

travel and tours in kumasi

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

travel and tours in kumasi

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

travel and tours in kumasi

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

travel and tours in kumasi

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Oshkosh native living in Paris shares charms of Southern France in new cookbook, culinary tour

Rebekah Peppler is the author of three books, including her newest, “Le Sud: Recipes from Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur."

While studying at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Rebekah Peppler got just the right push to follow her dreams. It took just one professor's confidence in her.

Today the Oshkosh native lives in Paris and leads culinary tours in France. She’s carved out a career path traveling the globe writing about food, wine and cocktails. Yet no matter where she goes, her favorite cheese will always be Wisconsin cheddar.

Peppler, whose newest cookbook is her third written in France, is part of a small group of American expats who have built followings sharing their love of French cooking and culture, including Dorie Greenspan, David Lebovitz and Milwaukee native  Patricia Wells .

Delving into the food, drinks and places that inspire her love of the south of France, Peppler’s new cookbook, in stores April 23, is “Le Sud: Recipes from Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur” (Chronicle Books), with photos by Joann Pai. A travelogue of taste, “Le Sud” offers a slice of time and place with recipes.

Her previous books include  “Aperitif: Cocktail Hour the Frency Way” (Clarkson Potter), which was a 2019 James Beard Foundation Book Award nominee, and  “A Table: Recipes for Cooking and Eating the French Way” (Chronicle Books).

Peppler tries to get back to her hometown once a year to see her mother, a librarian. Between stops in New York, Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago and Seattle, she will bring her book tour to Elsewhere Market & Coffee House , 531 N. Main St., Oshkosh at 6 p.m. May 22.

Working with Modern Adventure, she will also be leading a trip to Provence, France, Sept. 11-17. See  rebekahpeppler.com  or  modernadventure.com  for additional details.

Peppler recently talked with the Journal Sentinel about her journey to living in France and her newest cookbook.

Making her way from Oshkosh to Paris

I grew up in Oshkosh. I was born there, studied at UW-Oshkosh, got my bachelor's in journalism news editorial with minors in art history and English. One of the reasons I wanted to stay close to home was so I could study abroad. I actually studied in England and Italy. That sparked my idea that I could live further afield later in life.

When I graduated I decided to go to New York and culinary school. It is  ICC, the International Culinary Center , now. When I was there it was based in Soho, The French Culinary Institute. I got my degree in classic pastry arts. When I was thinking about what I wanted to do it was between that program and a similar one in Paris. I decided to move to New York first, started working as a food stylist, and spent nearing 10 years in New York doing that, but itching to do more writing. I had my feet firmly planted in the styling world, but always wanted to write and write cookbooks.

I never had a fantasy of living in France before I moved here, but I always wanted to live abroad and immerse myself in another culture and language. I started splitting my time between New York and Paris. Then it slowly became just Paris. I spend a lot of time in the U.S. for work, but my full-time life — and all my shoes and books — are in Paris.

This expat’s first international trip didn’t happen until after high school

I went to Italy for the first time as my high school graduation present. I think I surprised my parents by choosing an international spot.

The power of positive people

Dorie Greenspan  specifically has long been a figure in my personal life. She is a dear human. She was one of the first people that planted the seed in my mind that I could move to France. I just asked her to coffee, and then asked, “What is it like to live (in France) as an American, and how do you split your time?” She was unequivocally, “Do it, just try it and see." Her confidence in my ability to take that leap was formative.

What makes 'Le Sud' her most personal book

My interest in writing cookbooks stems from my interest in writing about food, but I’m not interested in banging out recipes and putting them in a book and putting pretty pictures in it. I’m more interested in telling stories and a narrative-driven book. That is what I strive for, and across the three books it started that way and leaned harder and harder. I think “Le Sud” is my most personal book.

I weave in a lot of my life, as well as telling the story of the region and expanding the story outside the beautiful Mediterranean seasons, produce and lavender fields, which Provence has in spades. It also has all these other parts: rivers marshes, rice, beaches, hillsides, wines that aren’t just rosés that are really phenomenal but can be overlooked because we think of Provence and we think rosé. You have the Italian border and its influence. I wanted to learn about that more and transcribe that on the page, but also in a way that felt personal to me, and fun, hopefully funny at points.

How Julia Child’s former home became part of her book

I spent a month there, writing and living in the house. I lived in the house and cooked in the house and wrote in the house. I brought my photographer. ... I also brought my partner, Laila (Said). It felt special to wake up and make my coffee in Julia’s kitchen with the pegboard and watch the sunrise and have these surreal moments alongside real life.

I had to eat dinner and work, connect with my spouse. There are all these things alongside the fantasy you walk into. That’s one of the things that is a bigger theme in my work in France, to separate the fantasy and the fantastic, what is real, and what can be fantastic about this fantasy, but doesn’t have to lean on the fantasy trope. I feel very privileged to live there for a month and use all the tools and develop and shoot recipes.

These are her travel essentials

I’m always bringing back kitchen supplies! I bring a lot of salt and coffee. We were just in Japan. I brought back a copper omelet maker and some really gorgeous graters and salts.

When I do a book tour or work travel, moving between different spaces and trying to create a sense of home, I try to be in a place that has a bathtub. Water really grounds me, and I travel with bath salts.

Who she looks to for inspiration

Melissa Clark has long been both inspiration and mentor for me. She has been such a champion of my work, which has felt like a big honor to me. Dorie Greenspan, the same. Sometimes there is this idea there is not enough to go around. I have found I have been welcomed and offered a lot of support. That is something I have never taken for granted.

There are other writers who don’t write about food who I reach for, like Alexander Chee. He makes it look easy, but it is powerful.

What she’s doing next

I have a tour with Modern Adventure (to Provence) in the fall. There are still seats. So if anyone from Wisconsin wants to join us, I would love it. The trip is inspired by the book.

What this Wisconsin native misses most from home

I still crave Wisconsin cheddar. It is one of my favorites in the world. The kind of cheddar we get in Europe is mostly English. There is nothing wrong with it. It is very good. I eat it when I can’t get my hands on Wisconsin cheddar. But there is such a flavor profile I haven’t been able to replicate in Europe. I used to bring blocks of cheddar back to New York. Also, heads up: If you travel with cheddar, take it out of your carry-on, because it gets flagged.

We’ll be stopping in Oshkosh right after Chicago (on this tour). I’m very excited. My first meal will include cheddar, and probably a brat on the grill and a seven layer salad. That is still one of my favorite things, and outside of Wisconsin no one knows what seven layer salad is! My mom makes it in a very specific way I love.

How Wisconsin plays a role in her success

It goes back to when I studied at UW-Oshkosh. I studied under an incredible teacher, Grace Lin. She still teaches. I’ll be in contact with her at the (May) event at Elsewhere (Marketplace & Coffee House). She’ll be moderating. She was very formative in starting my confidence in my writing, and also my confidence in being able to do it wherever I want. Educators can play such a huge role in pulling out the dreams of young people, laying them out in front of them and giving them the options.
