Testimonials

This was my favorite trip with Jhonnier and Viviana, and Camilo! We spent a whole day at the Harpy Eagle Reserve with these magnificent raptors as well as many other amazing birds. All the lodging was comfortable and clean. The food was great. Travel was easy. Can’t wait to return!

Western Andes Specialties – customized tour

Amazing trip with Johnnier, my 4th, Chelsea’s first Colombia birding experience led flawlessly and overwhelmingly fantastic as ever! His experience and expertise in planning and leading trips celebrating all things Colombian, nature (especially birds), community, people, food will fulfill your every wish! And leave you wanting to return again and again. ❤️🇨🇴

For my first birding adventure in Colombia, 12 wonderful days and 431 amazing bird species, I was fortunate to have Johnnier Arango as my guide. Johnnier is an excellent birder, by ear and eyes, and more importantly, an excellent guide, always making sure the birds are seen as good as possible, even the Antpittas! Colombia is a beautiful country, the people are welcoming and friendly. Every aspect of the trip was well planned, comfortable, and safe. I am excited to be planning my second trip this year!

The three of us had a tailormade month long tour in 2018 for our first trip to Colombia, the first two weeks of the tour was guided by Johnnier, The Andean Birder, he was an excellent guide, his knowledge of the birds and the country was exceptional, his eyes and ears were incredible, seeing and hearing birds that we would never have seen without him. We were so impressed by our trip that we returned in 2019, another two week tailormade tour with Johnnier, his tour was well planned with good accommodation, he was also fun to bird with, friendly and always used great local guides and careful drivers, always made sure we were safe and happy, nothing was too much trouble, when I expressed an interest in Humpback whales he organised an impromtu trip from Tumaco for whale watching. Every day was new and exciting, fabulous birds, fabulous country, and a fabulous guide. We cannot recommend him enough. We would like to return again to Colombia, but only if Johnnier is our guide. if you make the trip, make sure you book with the Andean Birder.

A highly competent birding guide who has organized tours of Colombia for WINGSPAN BIRD TOURS since 2017. Johnnier put together our tours of the Andes by arranging internal flights, all meals and accommodation, transport, and drivers. His knowledge of nearly 2000 bird songs is extraordinary and he has in-depth knowledge of hundreds of birding sites. Johnnier has special bird-finding skills and works very hard to help everyone in the group to see each species. A mild-mannered man he is very amenable and approachable and enjoys a laugh and a joke. Our successful tours our a credit to Johnnier, I unreservedly recommend him for your tour of Colombia.

I credit Johnnier’s excellent ears and knowledge of hotspots and hot locations within hotspots for hundreds of birds on my life list! My first trip to Colombia was only a few days long, and some of the activities planned were cultural (e.g., touring a coffee plantation), rather than pure birding. But I even scored a bunch of life birds while learning about coffee, thanks to Johnnier! He is a welcoming, patient, enthusiastic, kind guide. His birding skills—visually, by ear, and by experience—are top notch, and he’s a pleasant and fun traveling companion. I recommend him highly and would absolutely hire him next time I visit that amazing, beautiful, mind-blowing country—if he’s available!

I was the leader of a Swedish birding group with Johnnier as a birding guide for almost three weeks in February 2018. We are completely with his services. Very good knowledge of the birds and where to find them and a very well organized and prizeworthy tour! Especially impressing is Johhniers skill with the scope, He quickly found even the smallest birds in the forests and thus could give us all very good sightings of them. Thus all of us missed very few bird species, I can highly recommend Johnnier.

I was joining Stig Holmstedt and the Swedish birding group in January 2020. I fully agree with Stig. Johnnier is a great birding guide with deep knowledge of Colombian birds. I can add that it’s very important for Johnnier that everyone will see the bird/birds. As a photographer, I was very satisfied because though it sometimes was very hard to find the birds in the rainforest, Johnnier was always trying to help and find “the right spot” through the green mass of leaves where we were able to see the bird. The trip was very well organized and went very smoothly. We could just focus on the birds and lay back when there was time for that. We saw a bit over 600 different species and a lot of rarities too.. As Stig I can highly recommend Johnnier!

Latin america, riding the colombian andes, about this cycle tour.

Our ride from Colombia’s capital city, Bogota to Bucaramanga in Santander province is a beautiful Andean journey carefully designed to discover some of the very best cycling in Colombia, surprising and captivating on many levels.

Following a mix of gravel roads, dirt-trails and paved backroads, our trip is a beautiful Andean journey carefully designed to discover the very best cycling in Colombia, as well as to explore a fascinating part of Colombia. We will ride across the same mountain paths the Spanish conquistadors first walked as they made their way down from the Caribbean into the land of the Incas.

We stay in picturesque colonial towns with whitewashed churches and well-preserved architecture dating back centuries and have enough time off-the-bikes to get appreciate the people, history and culture of Colombia. Cycling takes us away from the crowds and we will discover trails and roads to take us through the history of Colombian independence, passing battlefield grounds and mountain hideouts. We will stop often at small villages to meet local people to taste the excellent local cuisine, sample Colombia’s world-famous coffee and enjoy Colombian wine from the local vineyards.

Starting in the cooler climes of Bogota at 2.615 meters we ride through Boyaca State, known as Colombia’s magnificent cycling heartland and pedal on the very same mountains as Nairo Quintana and Egan Bernal, Colombia's greatest cyclists, enjoying some of their favourite climbs and training roads. We then descend into the more tropical valleys and hilltop towns of Santander Province where we will end our journey with a magnificent cable car ride through the awe-inspiring Chicamocha Canyon. Along the way, we ride a mix of roads, gravel roads and exhilarating off-road trails. The riding is never technically difficult but always interesting, fun and sometimes challenging. We provide mountain bikes and welcome gravel bike riders so we can get away from the main roads and traffic to discover the many mountain trails that connect Colombia’s rural villages and really get a feel for the incredible, beautiful and fascinating country of Colombia.

Day 2 - Zipaquirá - Ubaté Ride 38km. +690m / -629m.

The trip "Riding The Colombian Andes" was a fantastic combination of visiting valley farms, rolling hillsides along with high mountain ridges of the Andes Mountains which offered spectacular views! Being able to visit a vineyard including a tour, tasting and an amazing lunch was very memorable. Another highlight was visiting the organic coffee plantation which also included a tour tasting and a wonderful lunch served in the courtyard of the property. Also along the way each day we explored many small towns which all offered amazing central plazas or parks to rest, enjoy the view and take in a local treat and a beverage of choice usually amazing coffee, before continuing on cycling.

Our guide Camilo Santos was fantastic, the best, who went out of his way to accommodate our wishes. He worked hard to give us various route riding options which were tailored to our individual riding abilities. Camilo gave excellent detailed briefings each day as to what our route conditions would be for the following day along with presenting our options. Camilo was very attentive to accommodating the differences with our 3 different riding abilities.

Our driver was Oscar Robayo, he was an amazing driver. He was very smooth operating his clean and comfortable support pickup truck which was used to transport our group of 3 tourists, guide, luggage, rest stop supplies (snacks and hydration), along with our bikes. Oscar was always smiling, helpful and eager to be in position to take photos of us along the way.

Enjoyed cycling hills and trails in Colombia. There was no flat sections and I am proud of finishing the trip. See back country Colombia and the colonial villages up close. Great tour leader!

Activity Profile

What's included, what's excluded, trip profile.

This tour uses a mix of roads and trails ranging from sealed roads to lumpy single-track trails. We will ride mountain bikes but the cycling is not technical and gravel bikes are also suitable. The distances are not long but the terrain is often hilly and most days we expect to ride for between 3-5 hours. There are a couple of harder days with over 1,000 metres climbing on the tour, but the support vehicle allows you to do as much cycling as you wish. There are also a few single-track sections where the vehicle cannot follow and your guides will make sure you are well aware of these days and before we hit this part of the route. As we all ride at a different speed and this will vary depending upon how we feel on the day, the guides will ride through the group to make sure everyone is ok, but stop at the top of passes to regroup. It is not essential that you keep up with everyone (especially on the climbs), ride at your speed and enjoy the riding and take in views and immerse yourself in your surroundings. If you are having a bad day, don’t worry (it happens to us all) there is always support close at hand.

Suitability: This trip is suitable for anyone with a reasonable fitness level and has been designed for all levels of ride. This trip is not a technical off-road trip and is suitable for gravel bikes as well as mountain bikes. The days are not too long, but there are climbs every day, and there will be some steep sections that will test the gearing on your bikes as well as your legs but these are never long and not every day. Overall, we will climb just over 7,500metres (24,500feet) in 12-days so you should enjoy going up as well as down and the fitter you are, the more you will enjoy the ride.

Biking Conditions: This tour follows a mix of good sealed roads, gravel roads and dirt tracks. The mix is roughly 50/50 on-road/off-road riding. In Colombia, it is only the main roads that are sealed so using mountain bikes we can stay away from main roads and traffic and follow minor-gravel roads as well as dirt trails. We have MTB as our default rental option but the terrain is ridable on a gravel bike and you are welcome to bring your gravel bike.

Cycling Days: We ride point to point on most days. Usually, there will be one main stop planned each day and several short stops to regroup, refuel or take-in-the-views before we reach our finish point. On two days we will do rides that start and end at the same hotel, allowing us to spend longer in the beautiful colonial towns of Villa de Leyva and Barichara. Apart from arrival and departure days where no riding is planned, we have one full day off the bike on day 10.

Day 1 Arrival in Bogota

Welcome to Colombia - please make your way to our start hotel. Our team will be available throughout the day to help you put your bike together and give you an orientation and explanation of things to do and see in Bogota. In the evening the Tour Leader will have a tour briefing followed by dinner.

Day 2 Zipaquirá - Ubaté

After breakfast, we will escape the city and take a short (1 ½ hour) transfer towards the mountains to the small town of Chia, which is named after the moon goddess according to the Muiscas legends. The hire-bikes will be waiting here for a bike-fitting and test run before starting our first ride. We will take it easy for the first day riding in the mountains at altitude and start with a gentle climb to la Valvanera, an impressive church perched on the mountains with lovely views across northern Bogotá savanna. We then roll downhill into the rural areas of Tabio, riding in the roads know locally as “legendary mountains.” From there we will pedal through the gravel roads to reach the town of Zipaquirá, which is the hometown of the 2019 Tour de France winner Egan Bernal. After reaching the town we can walk around the old town and enjoy a late lunch in the beautiful main plaza. In the afternoon we will transfer (1 hour) by car to our final destination, Ubaté.

andes tour colombia

Day 3 Ubaté - Ráquira

We will start with a ride alongside Fuquene lagoon and out into the rural areas of Capellania and San Miguel de Sema following a mix of paved and quiet unpaved roads. By noon we'll reach the colourful town of Ráquira, also known as the ceramics town and one of the most striking villages in Boyacá due to its pottery, ceramics production, as well as its beautiful architecture. We will stop to take a look around and have lunch at one of the excellent local restaurants. After a siesta, we will ride some more trails to reach our hotel in the mountains.

andes tour colombia

Day 4 Ráquira - Candelaria Desert - Villa de Leyva

Today we pedal out of town and ride across the Desierto de La Candelaria, which surprises us with unexpected scenery that provides an interesting contrast to the typical Andean landscapes. We pass by La Candelaria Monastery and Patio De Brujas before a short climb takes us to the top of a mountain pass where we have a panoramic view of the valley, and where Villa de Leyva is located. At an elevation of 2,149m and known for its whitewashed colonial buildings, cobbled lanes and vast Plaza Mayor, the town of Villa de Leyva is one of the many highlights of this trip, It is historically significant as well as architecturally impressive, it is where the first congress of the United Provinces was formed and Colombia’s new laws were drafted after independence in 1812. We expect to reach the area of Villa de Leyva by late morning and will have time to visit the Parque Arqueológico de Moniquirá (the ancient Muisca observatory) to learn about the pre-Colombian civilizations that inhabited this land as well as Colombia’s march to independence. After a late lunch at our hotel, where we stay for two nights, there will be time to explore its charming cobblestone streets, have a coffee, beer, or perhaps taste the local desserts.

andes tour colombia

Day 5 Villa de Leyva - Local Vineyards Ride

Today we have a ride right out of the hotel to discover the unique and fascinating area of Villa de Leyva, situated in the foothills of the Igauaque mountains, we follow a mix of gravel and paved roads through the Andean countryside to a local vineyard. In Colombia, it's unusual to find wine in the land of Chicha and Aguardiente (local liquors) but Villa de Leyva is one of the very few localities that produce wine in Colombia. The favourable weather conditions, sunny days, and the clay-based substrate are conducive for producing excellent vines and we take a bit of time off the bikes to learn about the wine-making process and of course sample the product. After an easy ride back into town we have some more time to relax and enjoy the amenities of the hotel or simply walk in the town, relax in the plaza or discover Our Lady of the Rosa Church and the Antonio Nariño House Museum, where this great Colombian war hero died.

andes tour colombia

Day 6 Villa de Leyva - Moniquirá,

At this altitude the mornings are fresh and the optimal time to ride and we will arrive at our destination in time for lunch. Today will leave Villa de Leyva behind us and we head uphill to Santa Sofía on quiet paved roads with good views of the mountains and riding through several vineyards before arriving in Moniquirá, our final destination today. Before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores, Moniquirá was ruled by the cacique of Susa, a local king or chieftain and in the Chibcha language of the Muisca, Moniquirá means "place of bath.” It is also famous for Bocadillo, a Colombian sweet made from guava paste and wrapped in a dried leaf, in the afternoon we will have a chance to visit a local artisanal producer to sample some of the best in the area. This local treat and the cycling culture in Colombia have a very close history, Bocadillos are the best fuel!

andes tour colombia

Day 7 Moniquirá - Vado Real - Guadalupe

We start our morning with a short transfer (1-hour) by car to the small town of Vado Real, from there we will jump on our bicycles and start pedalling on quiet paved roads to Suaita, and then to San José De Suaita, from where we head off-road through the beautiful rural landscape of the Santander mountains. We follow some fantastic mountain bike trails in the Colombian countryside and on the way we will make a stop at “Los Caballeros” an incredible waterfall before finally arriving at the town of Guadalupe. We ride around this charming colonial town with a beautiful central plaza and well-preserved architecture. After checking into our hotel for lunch we can enjoy the amenities at the hotel or take an optional walk to las Gachas.

andes tour colombia

Day 8 Guadalupe - Guane - Barichara

Today we have a challenging day up-and-down in the mountains but hopefully, you will now be used to the hilly Colombian trails by now! We will make an early start fueled by local orange juice and coffee for a short (1 hour 40 mins) transfer by car north, to the town of Palmar. From there we will take our bicycles and start to ride on the amazing gravel roads which take us to Galan and then to Guane. For the first portion, we will be riding through the forest and crossing creeks before we cross the Suarez river and start a climb on the way to Guane. This climb is loaded with amazing views all the way and the nature here is impressive. The landscape of the Colombian Andes throughout the state of Santander is characterized by the yellow and red tones of the clay-based hills on this predominantly dry enclave. We have lunch in Guane, another small beautiful town, which has preserved the colonial architecture and cobblestone streets. We will have our lunch here and then push on to reach the town of Barichara. Late afternoon/evening stroll to enjoy this beautiful town.

andes tour colombia

Day 9 Barichara - San Gil - Barichara

Barichara is one of the most charming of all towns in all of Colombia, featuring cobbled streets, picturesque scenery, whitewashed buildings with red-tiled roofs, colourful shutters, and a laid back vibe. Today is an exciting morning of mountain biking planned with a predominantly downhill ride through the valleys to Cabrera and ending in San Gil. This is a spectacular ride through beautiful landscapes following dirt trails and single-track with some superb downhill sections punctuated by small short, sharp climbs. A real day for the mountain bikers! We will stop at Cabera, yet another charming Colombian town and then relax with a few beers in San Gil before transferring back up the mountain to Barichara where we can chill out for the rest of the day.

andes tour colombia

Day 10 Barichara - Chicamocha Canyon Cable Car Ride - Mesa de los Santos (non-riding day)

Chicamocha Canyon is the largest canyon in Colombia, and means “full moon night´s mountain silver river” in Guane language and will be the focus for today. We will start early in the morning with a short (1hour 45min) transfer with incredible views next to the canyon that will take us to the national park. Taking a spectacular and truly memorable cable car ride across the canyon is the best way to appreciate this geological marvel. Chicamocha is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Chicamocha River carving a boundary between Boyacá and Santander departments. With a maximum depth of 2000 meters (6,600 ft), an area of 108,000 hectares (270,000 acres) and a length of 227 kilometres (141 mi), the canyon is the second-largest in the world behind America’s Grand Canyon. The cable car will take us to the other side of the canyon, Mesa de Los Santos (6.7km in a straight line) and here we will visit the local market and followed a short transfer to our hotel with a free afternoon to relax in the hotel pool or some easy short riding.

Day 11 Mesa de Los Santos - Riding The Canyon

Today you wake up to some of the most striking views in Colombia surrounded by imposing arid mountains and just a few kilometres from the spectacular red and yellow hues of the canyons. Early risers may want to pedal down to take in the sunrise before breakfast. Last ride today, and it is a cracker to finish with. We hit the trails at an altitude of 1,700 metres for another wonderfully varied ride off-and-on-road, following trails through the spectacular Andean landscape of Santander passing by coffee plantations and looking out for birds such as Azulejo Palmero and Tángara Real that are endemic to this area. We stop at a local hacienda where we learn about the local coffee and its process and enjoy a local lunch before looping back to our hotel where we can enjoy a late afternoon with cold beer straight from the local brewery to celebrate our achievements. Tonight we have a magnificent farewell dinner and relive the best moments of an amazing Andean adventure.

Day 12 Onward Travel from Bucaramanga

After breakfast transfer (1 hour 30 mins) to Bucaramanga airport for your flight to Bogota, Medellin or any other onward travel (flights not included).

Disclaimer: The adventure cycling tours we operate often go beyond the beaten track, and the countries where we ride are not always predictable. Due to these reasons, it is occasionally necessary to reroute or update itineraries. Our guarantee is that we will not change a trip unless for safety or to improve it. Our listed hotels are always accurate at the time of writing, but should we have to change any hotel, it will always be for a similar or better one.

Nuts & Bolts

Because some people can't imagine going on a trip without their own beloved bicycle, we do not provide them as part of this tour. However, you can hire bikes locally for the price listed in the tour pricing section.

If you bring your own bike, please make sure it is a mountain bike, preferably with front suspension, in good mechanical order.

We also have Gravel bikes available for hire, but they are limited in number & size - please send an email to us to check on availability.

Bike Repairs

Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicle, though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. Carrying a basic tool kit, a spare tube and a pump while riding is recommended.

Wearing a helmet is required on all our biking adventures and is non negotiable. If you do not wear a helmet you will not be allowed to cycle. Your tour leader is trained in first aid and emergency rescue, but to a large degree you must be responsible for your own safety while riding. It is therefore compulsory that you take out travel insurance that will cover you for a mountain biking tour.

You will be led by a local English-speaking guide and if the group is 9 people or more we will add another guide to the tour. All our guides are well informed in the history, culture and religions of the area where you are biking and are skilled at passing that knowledge on to you. Your guide is also medically trained and an experienced cyclist, able to handle most minor repairs en route.

The Nitty Gritty

Passports and visas, covid (updated 15 july 2021).

International travellers who entered Colombia should not present a negative PCR test to enter the country. They only have to do their Check-Mig registration 24 hours before their flight at the following link: www.migracioncolombia.gov.co Currently, Colombia has 20 airlines in operation connecting 8 destinations nationwide with 22 countries in the world. If you are travelling to the interior of the country, you do not need to present your negative PCR test. Nor will it be required to have the information downloaded and filled out in the CoronApp mobile application.

Since June 8, commercial establishments and other economic activities have reopened in the cities of Bogotá and Medellín, maintaining all biosafety measures (face masks, distancing, hand washing, ventilation), prioritizing outdoor activities and with some controls on capacity. You will be expected to wear a facemask when entering cafes and hotels but not when cycling.

No vaccinations are not considered necessary to enter Colombia, however, if you wish to visit tourist sites such as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, the Tayrona National Park or the different Amazon reserves, the Colombian authorities will require that you are properly vaccinated against yellow fever. Remember that this vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before travelling to these destinations.

One of the most surprising things about Colombia for foreign visitors is the unchanging nature of its climate all year round. This is because the country is located on the Equator, which means the sun rises and sets at the same time all year round and the season stays the same, unlike almost every other country in the world. There are just the dry seasons (from December to January and July to August) and the rainy seasons (from April to May and September to October). However rain is always a possibility and you will need to bring a waterproof jacket and pants, while Bogota can get quite cold so bring a fleece and some colder weather riding gear such as arm-warmers and a gilet for the days at altitude. Sun cream is also a must, as is a covering for your head.

Colombian food is a unique blend of indigenous and European traditions with a strong Afro-Caribbean influence and is noted for its diversity and quality. The two largest indigenous groups before the European conquest were the Tairona, who lived along the Caribbean coast, and the Muisca, who lived in the highlands to the South. Arepas, made from ground corn, are one of the oldest cooked dishes in Colombian cuisine and it is believed that the name derives from the word for corn in the Chibcha languages. In Bogotá and the Andean region, Ajiaco is the traditional dish. It is also a type of soup made with chicken and potatoes, and flavoured with a locally grown herb called "guasca". You will have lots of opportunities to try the local cuisine and we work hard to make sure you sample a wide variety of typical dishes during your time in Colombia.

Keeping you completely hydrated is a job we take very seriously. Cold water, some energy restoring local fruit and soft drinks are included in the tour price while riding. Soft drinks and other beverages during meals are not included. But you may also want to bring electrolytes in powder or tablet form. Alcoholic drinks are available everywhere, but are NOT included in the price.

Solo Travelers

SpiceRoads does not require you to pay a surcharge for travelling alone. We will arrange for you to share accommodation with another traveller of the same gender and if we can not match you up we will provide a single room at no extra charge. If you prefer not to share a single supplement is payable to guarantee your own room. The cost of the single supplement is listed above.

Extra Expenses

We recommend that you tuck away a few extra US Dollars for possible incidentals that might arise. It is always wise to have some paper currency in case of ATM absence or credit card problems. This will save you a lot of unnecessary worries. It is also customary to tip local tour guides and drivers; however, the amount you give should be dependent on the level of service you receive.

The Colombian peso is the country's legal tender. It is generally identified with the abbreviation COP, and you'll find that the official peso symbol ($) is used locally. A wide selection of banknotes and coins are used. You will find 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 peso coins and 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 peso banknotes. ATMs that accept major credit cards can be found in all sizable towns and cities. It’s best to use credit cards as a backup for cash. There are many foreign exchange offices in every city and town and at major attractions. The best currencies to take are US dollars.

Overall, the level of petty crime is much less than in most Western countries. However, take the usual precautions about avoiding rowdy political demonstrations, not flashing money around and being aware of pickpockets in crowded places.

Lonely Plan-it: How to plan a trip to the Colombian rainforest

Alex Egerton

Apr 10, 2024 • 8 min read

andes tour colombia

Colombia's rainforest is full of hidden wonders like the Cerros de Mavecure © Alex Egerton / Lonely Planet

Gazing at a map of Colombia , the vast swathes of greenery that make up the roadless Amazon region may seem like one homogenous mass of jungle, but that lack of detail has always drawn me to travel deep into the rainforest.

Despite making up 42% of Colombia’s landmass, the sparsely populated  Amazonia receives very few visitors.

It spreads over six departments – Amazonas, Vaupes, Guainía, Guaviare, Caqueta and Putumayo– all of which offer intrepid travelers the chance to roll up their trouser legs and wade into a magical world of old-school travel experiences.

Moving around here is hot, tiring and requires a lot of planning, but the rewards are immense. From thundering waterfalls in the middle of the jungle to enormous rocks that protrude from the rainforest canopy and cave art featuring the handprints of long-lost civilizations, the Colombian Amazon is both a natural and cultural wonderland.

Here’s how to get off the beaten track and discover the best of this magnificent Colombian rainforest.

A fisherman paddles on the Amazon River at sunrise

1. Pick your season

Wet or really wet

Needless to say, any destination within the world's biggest rainforest gets its fair share of precipitation regardless of when you go. However the Colombian Amazon does have two marked seasons.

The dry season runs from June to November and is scorching hot, but it’s the best time for hiking under the jungle canopy with firm trails and less wetlands to cross.

Low water levels also reveal spectacular golden beaches backed by walls of brilliant green foliage that appear on the banks of many of the region’s major rivers.

The dry season is also great for wildlife watching – both forest and aquatic birds gather around shrinking water sources, butterflies are particularly active within the forest and larger mammals such as tapirs and otters make appearances on river banks.

The cooler wet season runs from December to May and sees rivers swell, lowland forests flood and lagoons fill, making it the best time to observe playful pink dolphins. It’s ideal for water-based exploration, whether paddling through flooded forests or venturing out onto mirror-like blackwater lakes.

2. Find a base

Fly into a regional hub

Almost the entirety of the Colombian Amazon remains blanketed in thick rainforest, and settlements are few and far between – choosing the right base for your adventure imperative.

Once you leave the limited road network leading into the Amazonia from the base of the Andes, there’s very little transport between towns in the region, with most passengers and goods arriving on direct flights from Bogotá .

Visiting several different areas of the Amazon on one trip is difficult. To maximize your time in the jungle, it's best to fly directly to one of the departmental capitals from where you can visit surrounding attractions on shorter boat rides.

Major commercial airlines serve Leticia in the southern Amazon, which is a top spot for wildlife watching in nature reserves and on the lakes and tributaries of the mighty Río Amazonas.

Less developed destinations are reached with the goverment-run airline Satena and include Puerto Inírida, from where you can travel to the imposing rock formations of the Guayanese Shield and the wide waters of the Río Orinoco. Another option is Mitú, gateway to awe-inspiring waterfalls.

If your budget doesn’t allow for long flights and boat rides, you can get a taste of the Amazon in the departments of Guaviare, Caqueta and Putumayo on the western edge of the region, which are all accessible by bus from other major towns in the country.

3. Choose your comfort level

Luxurious lodge or cultural experience?

In remote areas, private nature lodges do their best to provide comfort in the jungle with elegant screened huts, good mattresses, satellite internet connections and gourmet meals. Once you book at a lodge, you’ll usually be required to organize all your activities through the hotel which, while easy, does limit flexibility.

Another option is to bunk down in a riverside Indigenous community; many have recently turned to tourism as a way to generate employment and keep young people from leaving to the city.

Quality varies greatly: the very best initiatives rival the nature lodges for comfort, while at others, getting a good night’s rest can be a challenge.

Staying in a community does have major advantages, however, with visitors free to wander around and experience traditional riverside life. It’s easy to organize hikes and boat trips at your own pace with knowledgeable local guides. Just be aware that residents are often reserved and it’s best to ask before snapping photos.

Due to the remote nature of the villages, many are not bookable online before departure, but local tour agencies in hub cities can usually call ahead to lock down a bed. A couple of well-run options can be found at Mocagua near Leticia or El Remanso below the Cerros de Mavecure.

A person stands in front of the roaring waterfalls of Raudal de Jirijirimo

4. Identify Appealing Attractions

From magical mountains to rushing rapids

Once on the ground, internet access ranges from very slow to non-existent, so it’s a good idea to research the attractions in the area before setting out.

Having a firm list of your must-sees makes it easier to work with boat operators once you arrive to design a journey that will hit all your selections without doubling back again and again.

Here are a few highlights in the region:

Cerros de Mavecure

These three enormous ancient rock monoliths rise unexpectedly from the lowland jungle beside the Río Inírida in Guainía. They are some of the oldest rock formations on the continent, and visitors can climb to the top of Cerro Mavecure for 360-degree views across the forest canopy.

Estrella Fluvial de Inírida

Take a boat ride from Inírida, the capital of Guainia department, to where the different colored waters of the Inírida, Guaviare and Atabapo Rivers flow into the mighty Orinoco, forming one of Colombia’s most important Ramsar wetlands.

Raudal de Jirijirimo

Perhaps the Colombian Amazon’s most awe-inspiring spectacle, these immense waterfalls on the Río Apaporis in Vaupes department, a 90-minute flight from Bogotá, are surrounded by impenetrable jungle and are only accessible by light aircraft.

Lago de Tarapoto

Watching pink dolphins jump playfully out of the placid waters of this pristine rainforest lake west of Leticia. It’s one of the Amazon’s most rewarding wildlife-watching experiences. The best time to see these wondrous creatures is in April and May when the lake is at its fullest.

5. Pack for the right conditions

Prepare for bugs and wild weather

Shops are lightly stocked in the jungle so you’ll want to bring essentials from home. If there’s one group of animals you’re guaranteed to encounter in abundance in the Amazon, it's insects. You’ll need to bring good repellent – 20% picaridin works well – and a portable mosquito net also comes in handy.

Lightweight, impermeable clothing is a must. While you’re likely to spend most of your time in the region sweating profusely, it can get unexpectedly cold at night and heavy rains on hikes and boat trips will have unprepared travelers shivering.

And if you're carrying electronic devices, you’ll want to bring a spare power pack (many villages don’t have constant electricity), a reliable dry bag (more for the rain than immersion) and some silica gel to soak up humidity for your electronic devices.

6. Get a group together

Personalize your rainforest tour

One of the biggest expenses when exploring the Amazon is boat travel. Fuel for outboard motors is bought in from a great distance and is much more expensive than elsewhere in the country.

Depending on how far you’re going, expect to spend at least US$200 per day for a motorized canoe. You can organize private boats once you arrive in the region through your accommodations or simply go down to town docks and negotiate with drivers.

Local tour operators sometimes organize collective day trips to nearby attractions, especially on weekends, but these tend to be crowded.

A better option is to get together with like-minded travelers and make your own itinerary so that you’re able to spend as long as you like at each stop. The price of a boat is usually the same irrespective of the number of passengers onboard, so it’s worth spending some time seeking out new friends to share the expense.

If you are unable to form a group and are on a tight budget you’ll need plenty of time. The cheapest way to get around is to hang out at the town dock and wait for a local supply boat that’s heading your way - although this may take days to materialize.

If I could do it all again…

I have made many trips from my home in the Colombian mountains down to the Amazon and after nearly every journey, I find myself wishing I had allocated more time.

Because I’m usually traveling on a budget, flexibility is key. On countless occasions I have had to pass up the chance to join unplanned trips to incredible destinations due to pre-booked return flights. Buying changeable flights or simply arriving on a one way ticket is a good way to ensure you’re free to go wherever the river takes you.

123 Andrés brings its bilingual musical magic geared toward kids to Wharton Center

In early February, Andrés Saiguero and Christina Sanabria made history when they took home their second Grammy — they're the only people to ever win a Latin Grammy for Best Children’s Album (in 2016) and the Grammy for Best Children’s Album (2024).

The bilingual husband-and-wife team, both with roots in Colombia, are bringing their upbeat children’s show to East Lansing on Saturday, a concert bringing together a full band.

They’ve been touring for 10 years, but children’s music wasn’t what either of them had originally planned for their lives.

Sanabria grew up in the Midwest with her Spanish-speaking family. She started her career as a homeroom teacher in Philadelphia where many of her students were growing up the way she did —speaking English at school and Spanish at home.

“It took me back to all those dreams my parents had for me to be fully bilingual,” Sanabria said.

Meanwhile, Saiguero was in Kansas City pursuing a doctorate degree in music with plans to become a woodwinds professor.

“While he was pursuing graduate studies, he always had a love for popular music,” Sanabria said. “He had a rock band when he was in Columbia and played in folk ensembles who played Latin jazz and salsa.”

Then one day, he was asked if he could fill in playing the saxophone at a gig. He showed up, and it turned out to be a band geared toward kids. It wasn’t what he expected, but he went ahead with it.

“He found out it was fun because he had to play the saxophone, but also be silly, act out and do dance moves,” Sanabria said. “He found that to be really fun.”

Around this time, she traveled to Kansas City and met Saiguero at a family party.

“The next thing you know, we’re talking about music and education and working with kids,” Sanabria said. “That’s where not only our marriage, but the idea for 123 Andrés, was born.”

Ten years later, they’ve produced multiple albums, published three of their songs as children’s bilingual books, created a podcast about cool jobs and tour the U.S. and Latin America with their show.

Sanabria said their backgrounds prepared them for what they do now.

“That’s one thing we love about kids’ music and performing for children and families,” Sanabria said. “It’s not stuffy — sit quietly with your hands folded and listen. It’s going to be loud and they get to stand up and be part of the show in many ways — acting out the stories, making music on their laps, singing along and dancing. It’s very interactive.”

While they will be doing two shows on Saturday — at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. — they will be in East Lansing all week performing for students. Their Saturday show focuses on action — encouraging people to move their bodies and contribute ideas. They’ll engage in silly mishaps in which they’ll solicit the audience’s help.

It is, Sanabria explains, not just a kid’s show, but a show for the entire family. They’ll encourage parents to sing with their children, to ask them questions and to help them come up with ideas.

While they welcome any age, Sanabria said the sweet spot is between ages 3 and 8.

Throughout the show, they speak in English and Spanish. They are, Sanabria said, learners of other languages, including American Sign Language, which they incorporate into the show.

Throughout their decade of touring, they have performed in communities where everyone speaks Spanish and where no one speaks Spanish.

“We anticipate that folks will not speak Spanish,” Sanabria said. “We scaffold the scenes in such a way so that when we come to a section that’s in Spanish, we will have planted some context for both kids and adults to follow along. When there’s something that we don’t understand or know, there’s a point at which it can be intimidating and frustrating. But if there’s just enough that we don’t understand, then we’re curious about it and interested in it. The way we structure what we do is to make it just enough that people are learning and curious and discovering new things.”

It's part of how they keep audiences engaged.

“We honor people who speak and have all abilities,” Sanabria said. “We know that there will be people who speak other languages that we don’t, so we’re all learning together. We may not understand everything, but that’s what keeps us curious and interested and engaged.”
