This is a fabulous trek and most people don't realize it can be done predominately by homestays. It is also possible to do either half as there is transportation from Padum (administrative center of Zanskar) and Leh. The Lamayuru Padum half which has several steep passes is a much more strenuous trek than the Padum Darcha half which has one high pass. There are two nights you will have to sleep in your own shelter or in a tea tent on the Lamayuru Padum half and one or two nights on the Padum Darcha half.  This is one of the best treks in Ladakh.  It has everything diverse scenery, from high mountain passes to narrow gorges, beautiful villages, spectacularly situated monasteries, and the homestays are warm and authentic not like half hotels of the Markha Valley.  If you have the time this is a must do trek.

Do It Yourself Information

Do It Yourself information for the Across Zanskar Trek

I brought a plastic tarp for emergency shelter, good sleeping bag, and dried food. If you have a tent its probably wise and a bit safer.

Food: Dried fruit and nuts are useful as well as candy bars, peanut butter and cheese to put on biscuits and chapatis for lunches. You can usually get some extra chapatis from the tea tent or home stay to take with you for lunch.

If you are trekking out of season you will need more since the tea tents will be closed, and you will also need better shelter for nights not spent in villages.

I used the trailblazer guide trekking in Ladakh you can get it in the Ladakh book shop in Leh for a steep 1185 rupees. List price is $20 USD.  Its now out of print an alternative is the Ladakh Trekking Guide by Cicerone

Home stays available in every permanent village along the way usually for between 100-200 rupees (in 2008 prices have probably risen) with food just start asking people and eventually you will find a place.

Its possible to stay in Wanla, Phangila, Hanupata, Potoksur (most beautiful village on the trek), between Potoksur and Lingshed you need to either stay at the Tea tent on the Lingshed side of the Sengi La, or if you are trekking out of season there is a covered stone shelter at the first campsite after the pass (Lingshed side) In a very long day it may be possible to make it to Gongma from Potoskur and stay in one of the two homes there. I stayed in the tea tent. After Lingshed the other tough day is to Snertse where there is a tea tent in season. Out of season there are some cave shelters to the East of the camp sites, where we actually stayed since the tea tent was not so great. I won't say its impossible to make it from Lingshed to the next village of Hamumil (home stay possible) but it would be a dawn to dusk hike with not much rest over two of the steepest passes on the trek (coming from Lamayuru). To avoid a tedious walk along the Zanskar River cross the bridge at Pigmo and go to Zangla (stay in at the gompa with the nuns to the left as you enter the town from the Northwest) far better than the home stay we stayed at there. There is a bus that leaves between 7:30 and 8:00 am to Padum. Then it’s worth either hiking the 1.5 hours to Karsha or taking the 4 pm bus.

For the second half you can take a shared jeep to Reru to avoid a long walk on a road.  The jeep leaves Padam in the late afternoon check locally.  It’s possible to stay in Reru at the house to the left sort of across from the school. It’s a long but doable day to Purne (or Purni) where there are a couple of pricey (compared to the rest of the trek) guesthouse/homestays plus a couple of very well stocked stores. Better than Padum, but more expensive of course. Phuktal gompa side trip is highly recommended. It’s quite possible to go from Purne to Kargyak but we also stayed in Tangzen. Home stays available in both villages just start asking people. If you have the time in Kargyak you can cross the river a little south of town and climb the opposite ridge for great views, 2 hours of steady climbing. From Kargyak there is a tea tent at Lakang Sumdo, if trekking out of season there is a good covered shelter just above Lakang Sumdo on the right but no close water source. Over the pass (Darcha side) the best option for shelter out of season is a cement roofed shelter to the riverside of the trail a half hour to hour past Chumik Nakpo camp site. We stayed in a make shift tent (from the plastic) at Zanskar Sumdo since the tea tent there was closed. There is another tea tent at Palamo and in a very long day it would be possible but not fun to go from Lakang all the way to the next village at Chika. There is a bus from Rarik to Darcha and on to Keylong that leaves Rarik around 2:30 to 3:00 pm.

Transportation

Morning bus goes from Leh to Lamayuru.

There is a bus from Zangla to Padum in the morning.

Shared Jeeps go from Padum to Reru

There is an afternoon bus from Rarik to Darcha (if you want to cut out the walk along the road) and to Keylong its better to stay in Keylong than Darcha and no matter which way you are going its more likely you get a seat on the bus.

A Possible Trekking Itinerary

You can shave a few days off this with a day less in Padum and starting in Wanla or you may even be able to get to Hanupatta now by road.

lamayuru to darcha trek

Hello from Norway,Thank you for sharing your journeys. I really enjoy your beautiful pictures and all that you share. And wow what a fantastic loooong journey you have had and I am sure continue to have. This is Borghild from Bergen, Norway. I came across your website looking for some maps. I did the Lamayuru to Darcha trek in Sept 2009 and have now written a book about this. I would like to include a map of the trek in addition to a map around Leh. It seems to be a challenge to find any copy free maps of the trek and one for Leh. I am thinking of making one but I would need help to do this.Do you know of any suitable map that I possibly could include in my book or do you know of anyone who could help me to create one.Lovely to meet you. All the best from Borghild www.borghildbo.com

Trekker's Rating:

Hi from Holland,I did half the trek, from Padum to Darcha in mid-September 2014, most of it solo. It took me six days, including a daytrip to Pughtal Gompa. Pictures can be found here: http://followhans.smugmug.com/India-Zanskar/ . The last picture of that gallery is the map I made based on my GPS recording. Download the (adapted) GPS recording here: https://db.tt/dnZP6h0v It was a marvelous trek, with beautiful scenery and lovely little villages with homestay options for the first 3 nights. I constructed my own place to sleep for the last two nights, with a tarp and a good down sleeping bag (it was still very cold though). Note that they have started constructing a road which will go from Darcha to Padum (and on to Kargil), and also to Pughtal Gompa. With Indian building speed it will still take a while before it's done, but I already met up with some building activity, especially after Shingo-La, down to Darcha. If you want to do this trek, don't wait too long.If you don't feel like finding your own place to sleep after Kargyak and want to limit it to homestays, you could also double back from there and end again in Padum, with a daytrip from Kargyak to Upper Lakang to enjoy the scenery closer to the pass. It's well worth it and easily doable with a reduced pack. I would advise against going from Kargyak to the pass and back in one day. These was my itinerary:*) Day 1: when I was there, the "road" (very rough) had been extended towards a place called Anmu, about 40km from Padum. Shared taxis go there and back to/from Padum and take about two hours. At Amnu there is a nice tea tent, where you can also spend the night. I walked on 8km to the lovely village of Cha, which is a much nicer place to (home)stay than Purne.*) Day 2: daytrip to Pughtal Gompa, going there straight from Cha and going back on the other side of the river via Purne, where you can have tea and stock up on snacks. This is a lovely daytrip (19km). The monastery is simply amazing and the scenery is great. The colour of the river is uncanny. We caught the monks at lunch, as you can see in the pictures.*) Day 3: from Cha to Kargyak. This was a long day (26km), perhaps a bit too long. Homestays were also possible in the villages underway, so don't worry about spending the night. I passed through the main valley with the little villages and the friendly villagers working in the fields. I had tea in a house underway and later at a tea tent, where I got some snacks as well. It was closed when I got there, but the man came up a few miutes later when he saw me. At the end of the day the huge mountain/rock of Gumburanjon was visible. Very impressive. There is a side valley just before Kargyak, with another village as well. I regretted afterwards not having a look at that valley, so I'd recommend taking two days to get from Cha to Kargyak and add the side valley as well.*) Day 4: I was not 100% well the fourth day, so I made it a short one. I went from Kargyak to Lower Lakang, at the foot of the Gumburanjon. It was about 12km. I made my own bivouac there. There was no tea tent, but I brought my own food. I would recommend going about 5km further to Upper Lakang, which is more beautiful and has more options to make your own bivouac, which many half-ruins of huts, but I only found that out the next day :-)*) Day 5: The day of the pass. I crossed the 5km to Upper Lakang where the ascent to the pass starts. It's not technically difficult nor very steep, but the altitude and fatigue of the previous days - not to mention the 15-20kg on my back - made it a pretty good challenge :-). The pass is a special place, with prayer flags and all. Going down I found an abandoned shepherd's hut where I stayed the night. There was also a tent camp nearby where you could stay the night. Total length of the day according to the GPS: 18km.*) Day 6: the longest day (28km) and almost all of it down. The beginning was very beautiful, but after a few hours the road building activity started and popped the spell a bit to be honest. In the end I walked down to a few kms from Darcha, where I hitched a lift on a tractor. I spent the night at the Darcha bridge - 100 rupees for a bed inside a restaurant :-). Buses leave there early in the morning. So I didn't go into Darcha town itself which was a few kms further. Note that there were no tea tents the whole day and that the last half was on a proper asphalt road. At Palamao the road crosses a bridge and you might be tempted not to follow the road and go down on the other side of the river, through nice fields etc, but don't do that. You'll get into major difficulties down below. The next morning I was on my way to Manali :-)I hopes this helps other people who want to have some off-the-beaten-track adventures.Cheers,Hans

Micah (Indie Trekking & Travel)

Hi You all, Thanks SO much for sharing all this information ! In 1 week I will be in Ladakh and want to trek solo. It is very incouraging to know that it is possible. Unfortunatly I couldn't open Your links Hans, neither GPS nor Photos. What tool did You have for the GPS? I bought one, but stupidly it doesn't work with apple products. My question: On this trek Lamayuru to Dacha: Is it easy to find/see the trek or could one get lost? I will of course try to get a map in Leh and do have the cicero guide, but still. That is my only worry. I plan to first drive to Nubra Valley as HH the Dalai Lama will be there on 18th July +/-, and walk south and then  - hope it works with hich hike or bus??? Cross over on the Leh Srinagar Road to Lamayuru to start the trek, maybe visitin Alchi on the way. If anyone is in Leh starting from 15th July 2018, I am  happy to gang up . Best regrads, andrea

Sorry for the delayed approval,  hope you have a good trek Andrea.

Leh – Photoksar via Lamayuru (5 hrs drive):

We leave Leh in the morning for Photoksar via Lamayuru by jeep. Along the way, we will come across some of the oldest and most famous monasteries in Ladakh. The monasteries in Lamayuru, Likir and Alchi are truly worth visiting for their age and history. It is great ride after Lamayuru as we pass may great scenic places. We follow the wide Spong Valley up for some time before we cross the river and start on the long and gradual ascent to Sir Sir la (4850m). From the top of the pass there are great views of the main Zanskar range as well as our next pass, Singge La (5090m). We reach the village of Photoksar (4200m), enclosed in green fields and situated among mountain cliffs. The trail towards Sumdo disappears in the deep gorge down to the right of the village. We make our comfortable camp for the night close to the village and enjoy a well-deserved rest.

Photoksar – Base of Singe La (5- 6 hrs):

After crossing the small pass of Bumiktse La (4200), we enter into the broad and lush Photang valley. A gentle trail leads us through this enjoyable landscape, where the villagers keep their yaks and horses grazing. One of the most fascinating things about the Zanskar trek is the ever-changing landscape. Every time you turn a corner or cross a pass, a new world will appear in front of you: the deepest gorges, the greenest fields, the majestic Zanskar River giving formations and life. Slowly we ascend towards our camp at the base of Singe la (4600 m).

Base of Singe la – Gongma via Singe La (6-7 hrs):

A gradual ascend will lead us to Singge la (5090m), meaning the "Lion Pass." The last few hundred meters are steep, but the top of the pass presents a rewarding view. From the pass a steep descend for few hundred meters. We follow the trail high above the Zanskar River, the mountains having taken a greener and gentler formation, before ascending gradually to Kiupa la (4400 m). From the pass the trail down is steep zigzag to the village of Gongma (3840m).

Gongma- Lanang via Lingshed (6- 7 hrs):

From Gongma we climb up the gentle trail to the Margum la (4400m) from where we can see Lingshed an hour or so away. The monastery is founded by the Gelugpa order and gives home to around 60 monks. The village itself is spread out over a big area, enclosed in green fields of barley. After visiting monastery of Lingshed we will continue towards Lanang.

Lanang- Zingchen via Hanumur la (6-7 hrs):

A steep and long ascent will take us to the pass of Hanumur la (4950m). Once there, the views north to Singe la and the snowcapped peaks of the Ladakh range are spectacular. From the pass it is an easy descend for an hour before a steep descend down to Snertse. Just above Snertse, there is a herders' camp, and sometimes fresh cheese, milk and curd are available here. Down in the riverbed it's possible to go hunting for fossils, and the locals sometimes show a nice collection of what they have found. When the Indian plate slammed into the stationary mass of Asia some 50 millions years ago, the Great Himalayas were formed. The Zanskar range consists of layers of sediments from the ocean floor while the Ladakh range consists of granite, born in the immense heat generated by the friction between the two plates. After resting for a while at Snertse we will continue towards Zingchen, where we can take a bath in Oma Chhu river.

Zingchen- Hanamur via Parfi la (4- 5 hrs):

In the early morning we head for our last pass before Padum, Parfi la (3950m), juniper covered trail zigzagging up to the pass. This area is also home to the Himalayan brown bear, as well as blue sheep. From the pass we descend down to the banks of the Zanskar River and to the village of Hanamur (3380m), which will be our camp for tonight.

Hanamur- Pishu (4-5 hrs):

This is a relatively level stage along the Zanskar River. On the way we will pass Pidmo (3420m), a small village with a few families. It is another 2-3 hours journey to Pishu, (3470m) which is a scenic village located on the west side of the Zanskar River. Hanamur, Pishu and Pidmo together with Tsazar and Honia on the other side of the river, constituted the former kingdom of Zangla. The entrance to Pidmo is marked by a long mani wall and chortens, from where we find our way to a grassy campsite.

Pishu – Padum (6-7 hrs):

We have another quite easy day ahead of us along a dry, dusty jeep road. From Pishu the trail leads to Rinam (3550 m), following the banks of the Zanskar River. Arriving at Karsha (3600m) we can visit the famous monastery. Karsha monastery: Karsha monastery is one of largest monasteries of the Gelukpa sect, founded around the 10th century A.D. and with 140 resident monks. It is situated on a hillside with an impressive view of the entire valley. After visiting the monastery we continue towards Padum (3531m), the capital of Zanskar and a major trade center in the valley.

Padum – Raru (6 hrs):

We will follow a dusty jeep road until Raru, which has been built recently, passing by the villages of Shila and Bardan, the last one being well known for its monastery as well as for its huge and beautifully engraved prayer wheels. From Bardhan it will take another couple of hrs along the Tsarap River before entering a plateau and the village and monastery of Mune. It is another 40 min walk to our camp at Raru (3900 m).

Raru- Pepula (5-6 hrs):

From Raru the trail follows a flat ground before descending steeply to the banks of the Tsarap River. Thereafter the trail follows the river leading to our camp at Pepula (3850 m).

Pepula- Purne (5-6 hrs):

From Pepula the trail can at places be quite tricky for the horses. Along the trail there are many ups and downs, and we will cross some small side rivers leading to the villages of Surle and Char. We follow the valley to the confluence of the Tsarap and Kargyak Rivers, and will then cross a bridge and climb up to the village of Purne (3700m), where we will find our campsite.

Dayhike to Phuktal Monastery 3850m (4 hrs):

Phuktal monastery is the most spectacular situated gompa in Ladakh, clinging to some limestone cliffs with the main assembly hall carved out of a huge cave and with the monks' white residences scattered down the hillside. The monastery belongs to the Gelukpa order (yellow hat order) and is built around a sacred spring which flows all year, even in the winter when other springs freeze. Inside the monastery there is an inscription to Cosma de Koros (Hungarian historian), one of the first Europeans to visit the Zanskar region and the first to translate the Buddhist texts from Tibetan into English. After visiting the monastery we'll return to Purne to spend the night.

Purne - Tetha (2 hrs):

We recross the bridge across the Kargyak River in the morning and follow the trail to the settlement of Yal. A steep ascent then leads us to the huge, fertile plateau of the whitewashed village of Tetha (3950), where we will find our campsite.

Tetha - Kargyak (5 hrs) :

It is a gentle walk today and we soon enter the village of Karu, marked by chortens. Stone walls line the track, protecting the fields from pack animals. Below the village of Tanze, we cross the bridge, and from here it is another 5km to the village of Kargyak, (4050m) the highest permanent settlement in the Zanskar region. Our campsite for the night will be by the riverbed.

Kargyak - Lakhang (4- 5 hrs):

In the morning, we walk across yak grazing pastures, with a thick blanket of edelweiss, towards the impressive rock monolith known as the Gumburanjan. Further we will reach the shepherds encampment of Lakang (4470m). Our campsite tonight has great, panoramic views of the Himalaya Range!

Lakhang - Ramjak via Shinkul La (7-8 hrs):

We start our day with a steep climb, before the trail crosses an alpine tract leading to the base of the Shinkul la. A river crossing over a torrent that flows from the glacier north of the pass will most likely give us wet boots. From here the ascent to Sinkul la (4980m) follows a trail across snowfields or scree, after season. Rock cairns and prayer flags will greet us at the top of the pass and the view is impressive with 6000m peaks defining both the Himalaya and the Baralacha Ranges. From here there is a steep descent to the valley floor. After some time we will reach our camp at Ramjak (4290m).

Ramjak- Zanskar Sumdo (5-6 hrs) and drive to Keylong :

Our trail today leads us through boulder fields, across several streams and meager grazing pastures to Palamo (3600m). We will meet our vehicle at Zanskar Smdo to drive us to Keylong. The road is lined by many dhabas and a campsite. Reach Keylong and overnight at Keylong.

Drive to Manali ( 4-5 hours):

Drive to Manali after breakfast. Trip finishes at arrival in Manali. You can take a car or we can arrange it for you from kelong to Manali.

Located on the bank of Bhaga river, Darcha in Lahaul at an elevation of 3,360 meters is a small village that is mostly inhabited by the Himalayan tribes. It is well mentioned in the book ‘Rough Guide to India’ as “a lonely cluster of dry-stone huts and dingy tent camps”. The popular Darcha Lamayuru trek is a journey that connects the remote terrains of Himachal Pradesh with the ancient hues of Indo – Tibetans in Lamayuru at Ladakh. The trail passes through a wide barren landscape and cascade of snow fed ranges, high altitude mountain passes and quaint villages. Further, it embarks upon the beautiful vicinity of alpine lakes where one can get acquainted with the wild whispers of several Himalayan wildlife, which includes migrating birds endangered animals. Interestingly, this rugged trekking tour to Lamayuru from Darcha will also travel across different high passes including Shingo la 5,090 at meters, Parfi la at 3,950 meters, Hanamun la at 4,800 meters, Sengge la at 5,060 meters, Sirsir la and Prinkti la. The trekking routes also require crossing magnanimous rivers like Chandra, Bhaga, Tsarap, Doda, Zanskar and Indus. The Darcha Lamayuru trek goes deep into the far-flung monasteries and gompas and the major attractions are the Sani Gompa, Mani Gompa, Bardan Gompa, Karsha Gompa, Lingshed Gompa and Lamayuru Gompa.

A Typical Day of Trekking

Our typical day of trekking is based on an average level of client physical fitness coupled with the nature of our weather and terrain. This could include very warm days during summer, high passes, and the need to move between campsites which ensure adequate grazing for the ponies.

  • 06:00 Bed tea is served to your tent. A great way to warm up before packing up your gear.
  • 06:30 Hot water is provided for your morning wash.
  • 07:00 Breakfast is served
  • 08:00 Your personal packing is complete and your trail lunch is available to place in your day pack. Your guide will go over the day’s travel plans highlighting those areas along the route you will want to visit.
  • 08:15 Off on the trail with your guide, or with instructions as to the route and where he will meet you if he needs to assist with pony packing (dependant on party size).
  • 12:00 Lunch along the route, often in a meadow or beside a stream. A typical lunch might consist of a sandwich, juice box, cheese, boiled egg, boiled potato, apple, cookies or chocolate bar.
  • 17:00 In camp with a pot of tea after a great day of sights and trekking. The tent is up and you are making notes in your journal and taking photos of the picturesque landscape.
  • 18:30 Supper is served. Time for more tea and, perhaps, an early bed.

Expect to have rather lengthy days of travel with plenty of time to take photos and look at the scenery, visit tea tents or local villages as you pass through. You will have plenty of time in camp each evening to meet with other travelers, compare notes, read a bit, take photographs or visit surrounding villages or sites either before or after your supper is served. By starting early you will have made substantial progress in the cooler part of the day, and will be able to take your time ascending the passes which can be up to 17,000 feet (5,180 M) on some routes, arriving at your next camp with some reserves of energy for the evening.

This is a 14 to 20 kms of tough trek each day to take the trekkers towards the western Himalayas for a premier long distance footpath that connects Darcha in Lahaul with Padum in Zanskar.

The Darcha Lamayuru trek includes a fascinating drive towards Darcha (3,360m) over Rohtang Pass (3,978m) which is the gateway to Lahaul, Spiti, Pangi and Zanskar valleys. Lying amidst the two incredible valleys namely the Indus Valley and the main crest of the Indian Himalaya, this remote and inaccessible setting is being well constrained by snowy mountain passes with Darcha being the starting point of the trek. The area of Lamayuru to Darcha is being allured with the most erstwhile Buddhist lineaments and still has kept alive an archaic form of Tibetan Buddhism. These cultural Tibetan alignments can best be found here which flourishes in chain of the far-flung monasteries, most of which occupy spectacular fortified locations, high on rocky ridges in isolated valleys.

While heading on towards Shingo La (5,090 m) to get into Zanskar, one can meet many ancient Gompa on the way that includes Phugtal Gompa, built under a huge cave to provide one of the fantastic view of the snow capped coldest regions and Karsha Gompa which is the biggest Gompa in Ladakh. Interestingly, this rugged trekking tour to Lamayuru from Darcha will also acquire different high passes including Shingo la 5100 mts, Parfi la, Hanamun la 4800 mts, Sengge la 5060 mts, Sirsir la and Prinkti la. The trekking routes also require crossing magnanimous rivers like Chandra, Bhaga, Tsarap, Doda, Zanskar and Indus.

Finally the trek terminates at Lamayuru where the most ancient Gompa being the landmark of this place fascinates anybodys attention. Leh is 125 kms away from Lamayuru.

Not to forget some other major attractions of Darcha to Lamayuru trek can be mentioned in a crisp manner as:
