Finding a travel sponsor for your event, travel blog, or adventures is an important part of achieving success in your field. This comprehensive guide will show you how to get sponsorship for an event or for your travels.

We have found the working on partnerships and developing relationships with our travel sponsors has been of great value not only from our past adventures but for all of our future travels.

Table of Contents

How to Create a Travel Sponsorship Proposal

We learned a great deal about how to find sponsors for our event, the  Mongol Rally.

In this Sponsorship Guide you’ll learn:

  • How to Approach Travel Sponsors
  • How to Define your Goals
  • How to Create an Attractive Package to Get the Sponsors Attention
  • How to Find Sponsorship for Travel
  • What you do After you Have Secured Sponsors
  • What Exposure to Offer
  • When to Start
  • How to Approach Travel Companies
  • How to Fulfill Your Commitments

on how to approach sponsors and we now feel confident when seeking sponsorship that we do indeed have something valuable to offer them.

1. Define your Goals.

Having a hook will help immensely when seeking sponsorship for your travels.

A company may not be interested in sponsoring a blog that is simply going out to backpack around the world. You must find some way to stand out from the crowd. The Mongol Rally gave us and our teammates Rick Griffin and Sherry Ott  a unique adventure to attract new readers and sponsors. Driving 1/3 of the way around the world definitely helps to make you stand out from the sea of travel bloggers and companies feel confident when there is not only the built in audience from the rally, but also the value of combining the audience of three blogs into one event for triple the exposure.

Mongol Rally Sponsors

Other travel bloggers that have had great success in finding sponsorship are The Professional Hobo , Go See Write and Nomadic Chick for the Ultimate Train Challenge, As We Travel for their European Train circumnavigation and GlobeTrooper for their hike across the Gobi Desert. Each of these trips was unique, epic and attractive to sponsors.

2. Have an Attractive Package.

Your sponsorship package is the most important aspect of finding sponsorship.

Be clear as to what you can give your sponsor in return for their product or monetary contribution. The first thing we did when putting together our proposal for the Mongol Rally was work on our package. We compiled our numbers and statistics together and input them all into a pdf file explaining what our venture was, what we will offer and how their product will be displayed.

We offered 3 levels of sponsorship.

how to find sponsors for an event

Give value to the companies that contribute more. Offering 3 levels of sponsorship will give smaller companies the opportunity to get on board, but will nudge larger companies in the direction of offering more. If they give a monetary value along with product sponsorship, they will be more prominently displayed, mentioned more in posts and if you have a car, T-shirt or backpack that will be displaying your sponsors, you they will receive the primo spot on the item.

3. Be Clear on Exposure

1. We clearly defined how many posts we would give each sponsor, how many tweets they would get and how many Facebook shares we would offer.

2. Tell the company what you expect from them.

sponsors travel agencies

Outline exactly what you require from the company you are seeking sponsorship from. People prefer to be told what you want rather than having to think about what to offer. Don’t leave it up to them. Tell them how much product you require, how much money you require and why you are approaching them.

How to Find Travel Sponsors

5. approach companies in your niche.

We are travel bloggers so we approached travel companies or companies that have something to do with adventure. However, the Mongol Rally gave us the opportunity to seek sponsorship outside of the travel business.

how to find a sponsor

We could approach cell phone and satellite companies, we found GPS and Audio Sponsors and of course we found the most important sponsor for our car in AllWAysRentals. A Rental company base in Christchurch New Zealand that offers campervans and cars for hire .

6. Involve a Charity

It is fulfilling to give back when traveling through communities so involving at any time during your travels is a great idea. When you decide to take on an epic adventure and are seeking specific sponsorship having a charity on board helps.

how to get a sponsor

Many companies are already involved with a charity, so it may be worthwhile to approach your premium sponsors first and offer to raise money for their specific charity in return for the largest premium spot.

Intrepid Travel also donated our carbon offsets for the fuel that we used driving from England to Mongolia.

7. Start Early

Companies plan their year in advance and the sooner you can seek sponsorship the better.

We waited far too long for the Mongol Rally to attract a Gold Sponsor. We originally wanted 1 main sponsor. They would be an exclusive sponsor that would receive all of the publicity throughout the Mongol Rally.

how to find sponsorship for an event start early

We wanted to ask for a large monetary value that would cover all costs in return for exclusive sponsorship. This is something that you should start seeking at least a year in advance. By the time we got around to approaching companies in January, although they were interested, they already had their advertising budgets allotted for the year.

8. Just Ask

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was from Andy Hayes when trying to figure out how to get something. His reply was “Have you Ever Thought to Ask? Great advice!

Our biggest fear was sending that first email. We didn’t know what people would say and how they would respond. Once we got over the fear of rejection, we started approaching companies that we would never have had the nerve to speak to before. Companies will say no that is a fact.

find a sponsor for an event

But you will be amazed at how many people will respond with a polite letter explaining why they can’t sponsor you at this time. Thank them for their time and keep them in your database for future reference. As your statistics grow and if the right opportunity comes along for partnership, you can try them again.

Once you receive that first acceptance letter, you will be filled with confidence and ready to approach more people.

9. Fulfill Your Commitments

Don’t offer what you can’t follow through on. We found it difficult to tweet and facebook from the desert in Kazakhstan and Mongolia but we found ways to fulfill our commitments to our sponsors.

sponsorship guide social media

We hired Social Media Atlantic Canada who were able to take care of our social media commitments when we couldn’t be online. We also scheduled our important tweets in advance to make sure that the word was getting out about our sponsors.

If there was one thing that we did when we pulled into a small town with slow internet, was to get online and make sure that our duties to our sponsors were fulfilled.

10. Follow Up

It is important to keep documentation of the exposure that you are giving your sponsors. We took snapshots of our hashtag #mongolsms and for 3 little bloggers working on their own, we reached over 1.2 million impressions in just 97 tweets.

find a sponsor and follow up

Once you are finished, send your sponsors the posts that you wrote about them during the event and the analytics on how it was received. A great follow will help you continue your relationship beyond just one event. Building relationships is the key. Companies want to work with people they can trust and if you are professional with them during your first business venture, you have a good chance of working with them again.

This is an eye opener. Thank you for the detailed post. I have always wondered the other ways to get content without spending.

This post was very helpful and insightful… and inspiring!

Thank you so much for this blog! . I try to apply this guide now. thanks

I am now considering your list – this is reasonable enough and the most charitable so far.

Hi! This was really so helpful because my twin sister and I are studying in college in India at present and we’re planning this eurorail trip next summer. We are going to start a blog soon and we were thinking about what companies would like to sponsor us. We don’t really know how to go about this but we’re really excited about this trip and are willing to work really hard to make it happen! It would be great to hear from you ! Thanks

Best of luck Mallika. The best advice we can give you is to really sell what you have to offer. You need to make the companies see that you are an asset to them. Just going on an adventure won’t get you sponsorship, you need to show something in return and show them that you are worth the money/product that they will be giving you. Best of luck!

This is really useful, thanks for being so honest. It’s gone into my bookmarks for future reference 🙂

This was great – thanks so much! My sister and I are going to Dubai in March so I think I’ll start with a baby step and see if we can get one sponsored thing to do while we’re there. It’s so nice of you to share this information with those of us who are new.

I”m trying to think of our angle – two middle-aged sisters, one who is a smart ass and one who is well behaved…..maybe I need to think a little longer!

Thanks again!

Good for you Kay. That is exactly how we started out, baby steps. I remember sending that first email and I was so nervous. I like your idea. I’d read about that for sure! Even two sister’s traveling together period is an interesting dynamic and I know you’ll be able to find something there.

thank you for your tip; i m going to knock at doors to . you never know. leaving next february for my europe tour on inline skate. excited and nervous but this cool me down a bit. thanks again.

Great advice, we are not looking for sponsors for a trip but instead companies to sponsor a single page on our site for that particular destination.

We are thinking about offering each page for a year but not too sure how much to charge? What are your thoughts?

This is so cool and very helpful . bookmarked this page

Great tips here!

I’ve been looking for sponsors for the upcoming event on my blog and will apply some of your tips here. It’s just I’m really new in finding some sponsors on my blog.

Cheers! Gay Aida

Superb post Deb n Dave. I love the way your names sound together – sorry, I digress. You demystify the holy grail of surviving on the road nicely. Now we have the lowdown, no one has the excuse not to succeed – a bit scary I think! Thought the guys and gals over at twitter would appreciate your words of wisdom so tweeted it is 🙂

Tanks wellan, we appreciate the tweet! Good luck with your travel blogging and may we all have success together!

Great advice! I have always been wondering how people get sponsorship! It’s good to know you have to start well in advance! I don’t think James and I are at the level to attract lots of money like that, but maybe in a few years.

Thanks so much for being generous to have shared your ideas and experience of sponsorships. There isn’t much blogging on this topic and as travel bloggers it should all be a part of our tool belt. Instead, I just thought it was something only certain bloggers were getting propositioned to do. Thanks so much for decoding the magic veil and hope y’all get more sponsorship in the future!

Glad we could help Christine. While, companies will approach bloggers that are higher profile and receive higher traffic, it is still important to have a package to present to people when you are seeking it yourself. Things just don’t magically happen all the time and when you work at it, you will eventually reach your goals.

You guys have helped so many travel bloggers. You always have so much advice to share and a lot of people are learning from you on a daily basis (myself included). Keep it up and cheers.

Thanks Cole. We feel that anything you want to find out about can be found on the internet. Why not make it easy for our readers so that they can find it here:)

I really can’t thank you guys enough for this post! We’re currently working on getting sponsorship for a couple of different things, most notably, our next women’s travel guidebook to Argentina. This was so clear and so informative! One question though: what program were you using to monitor the reach of your tweets?

Hi Kelly, we use TweetReach and Hashtracker. They are excellent tools to let a company know how far your social media reaches. Cheers and good luck!

What is the URL of Hashtracker?

Hey Victor. It is actually Hashtracking. Here is the URL: http://www.hashtracking.com/ Cheers D&D

Lots of good advice there, mate. I think I’ll stick to my traditional google adsense, though. Our completely different style makes for short visits, and quick answers. Simple google adsense clicks seems more profitable in such a speedy environment.

Great post you guys! This is fantastic information for that day in the future when I’m going after sponsorships. Hopefully soon 🙂

Glad we could help Kit. Good luck with your future sponsorship and you must let us know how it goes. It will help inspire others to know that they can do it too!

Thank You for the tips. I just started my travel blog and need information help.

Good luck with the new blog Victor. It is a lot of fun being a travel blogger. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Thanks, as always, for your sound advice!

Thank you NLM, glad that you could find it useful.

Hey guys, Thanks for the post. I got into blogging into a way of extending my travels. I had in mind something related to sponsorship but I wasn’t sure how to proceed. Now, I have a clear idea on what to do. Perfect!!!

Glad we could help Ruth! Good luck and happy travels.

Thanks for this — really appreciate your transparency AND generosity. And the timing is good too, as I am just now beginning to seek sponsors for a big trip I am planning next year.

And I completely agree about the “just ask” philosophy!

You are welcome Mariellen. Good luck with your sponsorship proposal and hopefully this post helped you out a bit. Cheers!

Great transparent post guys! Thanks for that. I’ve just done well selling local sponsorships for my Meet Plan Go event…I should figure out some packages now for LLworldtour! You are right…having a ‘hook’ or special ‘thing/trip/event’ helps it be more packageable/sellable. Now, more importantly, WHEN am I going to get to meet you cool people?! 🙂 Lisa

Hi Lisa, we are so glad that you had success for Meet Plan Go. It is these types of events that help you to learn and get started. Once you have landed some sponsorship, it is easier the next time out. I know that you will have great luck with LL World Tour! And yes, I hope we meet soon:)

Great advice guys! Thanks for sharing such valuable info. We are working on some sponsorship stuff now. It is exciting and definitely the way in which blogging is heading. As you said it is scary, but you just have to jump in there. We always say, If you don’t ask then the answer is always no. EAch no is one step closer to a yes and we can learn from each no to help get us to that yes.

Hi Caz, you and Craig have already done so well and I agree, Sponsorship is the way that blogging is heading. As travel bloggers we have such a great industry and the possibilities are endless. I love your quote, If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. As scary as it is to ask, it is always better to get a no than to not ask at all.

Thanks so much for sharing the details of your sponsorship package. We are getting very close to launching our product and this is going to be very helpful if we decide to approach sponsors.

Hi Christy, I can’t wait to hear what your new product is. Good luck with approaching sponsors, I am sure that you wil have great success!

Amazing article! I’m not a blogger, but his is still great info for anyone running a website.

Thanks Sogo Travel. You are right, anyone can follow these steps to help gain sponsorship for their own events.

Thanks for the tips. I’ve done this for events & charities, but never (yet) for myself… 🙂

That is awesome Rachel. Have you done anything differently for events? Or have you found your experiences to be similar.

Thanks for the tips and advice guys! It is generous of you to share how to manage such a large piece of the business side of blogging. This will come in handy in the next couple of weeks as I take my first small steps into the world of sponsorship and trying to partner with companies large and small. Thank you!!

Hi Gillian, good luck with seeking your sponsorship. It can be a daunting task shifting to the business side of travel blogging. We are all writers and photographers, but learning how to run a business is a whole new ballgame.

Thanks so much for writing this! I have an idea for something just like this and might want to approach Honda and/or Amtrak. Now I know what I’d need to do. Your information is great. Very smart, by the way, to have someone handling social media when you couldn’t.

Good luck with your sponsorship. You have such an amazing product, I know that you can do it. You must let us know how it goes.

Get Sponsored To Travel

Get Sponsored to Travel

Do you know that you can travel around the world for free? Even better, you can get paid as you travel to your dream destinations. This is possible through the help of travel sponsors.

A travel sponsor can be a company or people who run a business or cause and are willing to sponsor your trip in exchange for promoting their brands.

If you are a travel blogger with an established website with thousands of page views or someone who has many followers on social media, it will not be easy, but a bit easier for you to get sponsors.

Now, getting a travel sponsor may not be difficult but a bit tricky. One important thing you need to remember is that these sponsors are also expecting something in return. And you have to convince them that helping you travel around the world can be beneficial for them.

Why Travel Sponsorship is the Best Way to Travel

Travel sponsorships are popular among travel bloggers, vloggers and social media personalities. We all know that going on a trip around the world requires a significant amount of money. But with travel sponsorships, companies or individuals can help you fulfill your travel goals in exchange for promoting their brand.

A travel sponsorship agreement may allow you to travel the world stress-free. At least from a money perspective. Imagine going places without worrying about how much money you are spending.

Having said that, sponsorship comes with commitments, therefore another type of stress. We’ve detailed that in this article on sponsorship .

We have to admit that these full cash sponsorships are extremely rare, unless you are a well established blogger or influencer.

But once you reach that level you don’t need to save much for the hefty travel fares or accommodation during your trip as there are companies who are willing to spend their money in exchange for you promoting their brand on your blog, article or social posts.

Moreover, in many cases, travel sponsors will also assist with your travel itinerary. Some companies will go as far as getting you booked with exclusive getaway destinations or get your exclusive dining reservations among other perks.

And if you are promoting a brand of travel items, you may get free products as well.

The latter is actually a more frequent type of sponsorship deal than cash sponsorships.

Tips To Get Travel Sponsorships

Make sure to follow these tips so that you can easily land an exciting travel sponsorship with companies that offer general travel sponsorship packages.

1. Be proactive in finding travel sponsorship.

Even if you are a popular blogger or social media personality, you need to be extra proactive to find travel sponsorships especially. This is especially true if you are trying to get your first time to work with travel sponsors.

Use your connections, blog or social media account to announce that you are interested in travel sponsorships. If you know of companies or people who are into the travel niche as you do, reach out to them. Check also with other travel bloggers if they have some recommendations.

2. Before you reach out to your prospect sponsors, work on making your travel blog or social media account stand out.

Before you start finding a travel sponsor or sponsors to help you travel the world for free, you should first work on improving your travel blog if you are a blogger or work on getting more active followers if you are into social media platforms. That way, you can easily convince your sponsors that you can indeed promote their brands.

3. Think of a travel project that will entice companies or sponsors to let you promote their brands as you travel.

You will have a high chance of getting sponsorship for your trip if you also have a good travel project in mind that will give companies an opportunity to promote their brands. Merely saying that you wished to travel the world won’t get you a paid or sponsored trip even if you are the most popular blogger.

Make your travel project stand out by making it more personal and specific. One example of a good travel project will be “To conquer Mt. Kilimanjaro in 5 days to help me overcome my fear of heights.”

4. Prepare an enticing pitch.

Once you have a list of your potential sponsors, call or email them and tell them about your travel plans and how you can promote their brands through it, in an enticing pitch.

In your pitch, be sure to also include information about the traffic you are getting in your blog site or social media posts so they’ll know how many people they could possibly reach if they will sponsor your trip.

5. Don’t give up easily.

Some companies will give you an outright no for an answer while others may say that they will think about it.

Getting travel sponsorships can be challenging if it is your first time in this kind of travel arrangement. But don’t give up yet as you will never know if the next person or company you are calling or sending an email to might give you a positive response.

Q: Can I get a company to sponsor my trip even though I am not a travel blogger?

Yes, it is possible to get companies or people to work with you on a paid or sponsored trip even though you are not a travel blogger. You can also easily get sponsorship if you have a strong following on social media or if you have a popular vlog site.

Q: What is the best way to contact potential sponsors, is it through email or call?

If you have both the email address and contact number of your prospect sponsors, you have nothing to lose if you do both. However, if it is your initial conversation, it is always good to consider calling first. Calling a sponsor can help you build rapport easily. But regardless of which method you use, you should always be ready with your media kit and pitch.

Q: Aside from promoting the brand, is there anything else that I need to do for my sponsor?

In a sponsorship contract, it will tell you the things that you need to do to get paid or sponsored for your trip. Make sure that you comply with what you initially agreed upon in your contract.

Q: Are there any drawbacks to sponsored trips?

A paid or sponsored trip has some drawbacks that you need to know.  For one, you need to commit part of your travel time to promote a brand or brands if you have multiple sponsors.

In some cases, your sponsors may require you to bring their products to your trip so you can blog about them. And this could mean having extra baggage when you want to travel light. It also comes with commitments and with more rigid plans, blog or social media posts.

Q: Are there any other alternatives?

Yes. A great alternative would be to make money on the road. There are countless opportunities to earn the cost of your flights and accommodation from being a virtual assistant to running your own online agency. The number of options to make money while traveling are endless.

The proposal should include details such as the destination, travel dates, itinerary, and the type of content that you will produce. This could be blog posts, social media posts, photos, or videos.

Getting Your First Few Travel Sponsorships

Looking for a travel sponsorship? Wondering how bloggers travel the world so much? Want to know how I have travelled to over 25 countries without any permanent source of income? If yes, then this blog is for you!

But first things first … if you are new to this blog let me introduce myself. I am Dev, a full-time travel blogger from New Delhi, India. In 2016, I quit my corporate career in England, moved to India and became a nomad. I’ve been travelling and writing on this blog ever since.

Newspapers like TOI and ET and many others have moreover written about me, featuring my journey as a blogger. Read this page for more . I have travelled to 25+ countries in the last 4 years, with almost all my journeys being sponsored.

If you are wondering who are travel sponsors. They can be anyone in the travel industry: a country tourism board, an airline, a hotel chain, or a tour company.

If you’re looking for more tips on why they provide travel sponsorship, I have written another blog post on how to find travel blogging sponsorships that will set you going on why they sponsor travel bloggers in the first place. This blog will also help you understand a few basics that we are going to skip in this blog.

Here’s another useful resource if you want to know specifically about tourism boards and how to contact them .

Please note that if you are looking for travel sponsorships as a travel writer, especially a blogger, then only this article is going to make sense. If you had another definition in mind, then a few things may sound irrelevant. But nevertheless, there’s no harm in reading.

Now, coming back to the topic at hand…

Travel Sponsorships

When I became a blogger in 2016, all my trips were self-sponsored.

Later, as I became a travel influencer , brands started reaching out to me for promoting them on my channels. And this is how it all began!

I have experiences like flying in business class , doing a solo road trip in Germany , travelling in a  luxury train travel in India , and other such experiences.

I have even earned a Scuba diving certification, learned snowboarding, and tried sky-diving, all without spending a dime.

Getting Travel Sponsorships Takes More Than Just Impressive Numbers On Your Blog!

As I started blogging, (in January 2016) I thought, “if I will keep writing great content, increase my blog readership and gain an impressive number of followers on Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, I’m going to succeed. People will notice me, and travel companies will run after me asking if I can promote their brand”. Though I am not claiming that it was an incorrect way of becoming a successful blogger. But it was not entirely correct, either.

In the last few months (precisely speaking, after July 2016) I’ve realised that there’s more to blogging than just getting impressive traffic, or writing great content. I mean you sure want good numbers to for getting travel sponsors (or paid gigs) but if you’re investing all your time in improving the figures, and are not approaching the sponsors on your own — writing at least 10 emails per day — you’re not doing yourself any favour. You’re only losing hope, slowly, every day.

This particularly applies to new bloggers — those who are still taking baby steps in establishing their identity.

If you haven’t started a blog yet and are thinking to start one, here’s a detailed travel blog I have written on How To Start A Travel Blog In India .

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Footloose Dev (@footloosedev) on Nov 3, 2018 at 11:05am PDT

How Much Traction Is The ‘Minimum Required Traction’ Before You Can Start Contacting Brands?

Though there is no ideal number, I believe that once you start getting a couple of hundred page views per day on your blog, and have at least over 5 thousand likes on your different social media networks like Facebook and Twitter – you’re ready to approach travel sponsors.

Start Writing To Travel Companies And PR Agencies!

Understand what kind of travelling you’re into. Search for the companies working in your niche (for example motorbiking, adventure travel, backpacking, luxury getaways etc) and start pitching them.

Send them an email introducing yourself and your blog, and how you can help redirect your readers to their website. Be very precise with numbers.

Speaking of how to contact travel sponsors and make sure you get travel sponsorship, here are a few practices…

1. Crafting The Right Email

When I had initially started approaching companies for travel sponsorships, my email often sounded more like a request — having no authority at all. Following a little introduction, I would use sentences like “Since I am travelling in your city next, I was thinking if you’d be interested in working with Footloosedev. Any help (regarding accommodation/activities etc) would be greatly appreciated”.  And the template worked just well. I got around 30 per cent replies to my emails – this makes 3 replies for every 10 emails. Not a bad figure at all.

I think it was because the term “any help” gave the other party the upper hand, from small startups to big companies, and they at least replied. Often, it wasn’t a very beneficial deal, but it didn’t matter. Because initially, it was all about scoring more and more sponsors and building my portfolio.

  • Keep your email short and crisp, and include all additional information.
  • Read: How To Create A Media Kit For A Travel Blog

2. Write More Emails. Contact More Travel Sponsors

Since July, the time I realised I should start pitching sponsors, I have been writing about at least 10 emails per day, when I’m not travelling. Some days I even write over 20 or 30. The point here is, when you’re new in the business, you got to reach out to people, and tell them who you are, and how you can bring value to their business.

I wrote about 50 emails for my Goa and South India trip – I found 5 sponsors (in 2016). I wrote about 50 emails for my Gujarat trip – I found 3 sponsors (in 2017). I’ve written about 50 emails for my upcoming Europe trip – have found 4 sponsors (in 2017).

If it wasn’t for the first email from my side, I would still be travelling without and travel sponsorship. During my 58 days Europe trip, I spent only 70,000 Rupees including my flight and visa costs). How did it happen? Because of travel sponsorships and free travel. Read more about it here: 2 months Europe travel in less than 70,000 Rupees .

3. Contact Tourism Boards

When I had initially started blogging, and found other bloggers working with Tourism Board, I always thought that it will take at least two to three years to persuade a Tourism Board to sponsor my trip. But I was wrong!

It’s true that top travel bloggers always have better prospects than you but working with tourism boards isn’t a tough deal to crack.

The first-ever Tourism board I worked with was Goa Tourism Board, and it was when they were organising an annual blogging event, inviting a group of bloggers from across the world. At the time they were hosting the bloggers’ trip, I luckily ended up writing them an email. And I happened to be lucky. One blogger had to cancel her trip because of some reason and I got a chance.

So yea, keep contacting tourism boards, and you never know if they invite you on a FAM trip as a travel blogger. I have shared a link to my other blog on how to contact tourism boards for travel sponsorships.

Give Blogging Some Time

Last but not least, blogging tests your patience like a slow, uphill journey. So be prepared for it!

Before I started blogging, I found almost 90% of (travel) bloggers claiming that it took them at least ten months before they started getting sponsored trips – while many lost the fight before they even turned 10 months old.

If you look at the industry at the moment, most of the successful travel bloggers out there have been doing it for the past few years – some for as many as 5 or 7 years, or even more.

Travel blogging requires a tremendous amount of work, as well as a tremendous investment of time and effort before you begin to see any benefits.

But on the bright side, remember that the travel industry is the fastest-growing industry in the world. No automobile, no banking, no retail industry is growing as faster. There are hundreds and thousands of travel startups entering every day – looking for new and cheaper means of marketing. And what could be better than promoting their brand on a website which is delivering its posts to a few thousand people, every month – almost 90% of whom are only interested to know about travel, right? And that’s when travel bloggers come into the picture. We Are Needed! And There’s No Denial To This Fact!

I think you’re absolutely correct with ‘writing emails’. it is very much required for those who are new in the business. making your portfolio and working with more and more clients is the key to successful blogging.

Absolutely Ance. As I said, I initially thought that focusing traction building will only suffice in this game, but I was wrong. You need to take a step forward and contact people on your own.

Influencers are the new travel agents: Here's how creators are using their adventures to build businesses, from planning group trips to becoming certified advisors

  • Many travel creators are paid by brands to produce sponsored content showcasing their adventures.
  • Now, more are using their unique travel knowledge to lead group trips and become travel agents.
  • Business Insider spoke with five creators and startup founders about why and how they're doing so.

Tia Cooper isn't your typical travel creator.

Yes, she shares breathtaking Instagram reels from different countries, like during her recent trip to Ireland, but she may also get hit by more basketballs than the average influencer. The 34-year-old works as a physical education teacher in Abu Dhabi, where she's lived for the past eight years.

The work doesn't stop when she reaches home; after 5 p.m., she books flights and hotels for clients around the world as a travel agent.

"I wanted to influence people in a different way, and this is one of the best ways for travel creators to supplement their income," Cooper told Business Insider. "Being a travel agent is just another way of using your travel knowledge to help other people and build a community."

Since working for an online travel advisor company over the past eight months, Cooper, who is certified as a travel agent for destinations from Disney parks to the Caribbean, has sold over $100,000 worth of trips to clients, according to documentation viewed by BI. She offers different tiered packages, such as a VIP concierge experience, and earns a commission that ranges from $200 to $600 per person.

These days, people aren't only using travel agencies to plan their next trip or tapping friends and family for recommendations. In the past few years, they've started using platforms like TikTok and Instagram to find the best places to visit by following creators on their adventures.

Creators like Cooper are leveraging these followers to build lucrative side hustles or full-time businesses. In addition to that, startups like Jerne, which connects travel creators with hotels, airlines, and cruise companies to work with, are helping influencers monetize their online communities while streamlining the booking process.

"The lines are blurring between the travel advisor and the travel creator profession in that today to be a successful travel advisor, you also have to be social-media savvy, as you do for any business," Tim Morgan, Jerne's CEO, told BI.

BI spoke with five travel influencers and industry experts about how the sector is being shaped by the creator economy — from helping followers book new trips to organizing group excursions with their online communities.

DMs persuaded some travel creators to arrange group trips with their followers

Travel creator Gabby Beckford led her first group trip with her followers in August 2021.

The 28-year-old, who started traveling solo when she was 17 and has amassed 500,000 followers across social media by documenting her experiences, estimated she'd gotten hundreds of Instagram messages over the years from people asking for travel recommendations — and to go on trips with her. Those inquiries inspired her to organize a weeklong visit to Croatia; she handled the logistics, including booking flights and accommodations and planning an itinerary for 30 people.

Related stories

Today, Beckford partners with brands to plan more of these types of trips. She works with tour companies like Intrepid Travel, which arranges transportation and accommodations as well as handles issues like customer re-bookings and reviews. Beckford gives input on the travel itineraries, helps find people to attend, and leads the trips.

"Group trips are becoming a lot more popular because seeing a country through a travel influencer's eyes is what people want," she said. "Followers, especially in my generation, want to meet the people they've been following."

Nabila Ismail , who has 112,000 TikTok followers, organizes trips through her company, Dose of Travel. The creator and pharmacist, who quit her six-figure job in 2021 to build her travel business full-time, has led group trips to countries like Mexico and Indonesia.

"People told me they loved seeing the representation I bring as a Pakistani-American woman because the solo travel industry isn't very diverse," she said. "It's what inspired me to start a business that prioritizes taking people of color to countries I've been to before."

Ismail initially worked with the group travel company TrovaTrip, which handled the logistics. Now, she's hiring people who have participated in her past trips to lead future ones.

As more travel creators build communities to travel with, startups like Jerne are popping up to help support their businesses. Brand partnerships have long since been an income source for travel creators, so CEO Morgan built an online platform to help them partner with companies including Virgin Voyages . Morgan said quite a few creators are now using Jerne to find brands to sponsor group travel, as well.

"Travel advisors have been hosting group trips for as long as they've existed," he said. "Now, with greater access to travel booking technology and the massive communities creators are building, it's no wonder why travel influencers are turning to trips."

The travel-influencer-to-agent pipeline can build deeper communities

Cooper, the creator who works part-time as a travel agent, said she started planning trips as a way to supplement her income and work more closely with her followers.

"I don't think enough creators realize how much money there is to be made," she said. "These days, people want travel experts they trust to book their trips, and as creators, we naturally build that trust because of the content we post."

Cooper said it was easy to get started — one of her mentors walked her through the certification process — and she thinks the travel-influencer-to-agent pathway will "start booming" as more people open up to this opportunity. She said creators only have to pay for their credentials, find a travel agent company that offers flexible working hours, and commit to that job a few hours a week.

"It's helped me build a deeper community for sure because when you're responsible for someone else's travel experience and they're paying you for it, there's a level of trust that you don't take for granted," she said.

Some travel startups, including Dharma, are also framing their businesses around global communities, centered on influencers. Dharma plans and sells trips hosted by creators and brands.

"Communities were built around physical proximity in the past, and now we're in a position where you can build your community around the interest around passion points — around the individual," CEO Charaf El Mansouri said. "That's what creators are: they're lighthouses that are able to build community across borders."

Getting sponsorship for travel

If you want to make money as a travel writer, being hosted or going on a famil (where you get to stay, travel or experience activities for free) is almost a necessity. Writing compelling requests to tourism bodies, PR agencies or other operators to ask for hosting is crucial.

So how do you make a sponsorship request?

If you have an idea for a travel story but need support to get there or assistance once you’ve arrived, it’s worth gauging how likely it is that you’ll get hosted before you pitch to a publication.

Requesting sponsorship or hosting is different from going on a press trip , when you’re likely to be with a group of other journalists, writers, bloggers and photographers and you’ll all follow the same itinerary (usually jam-packed full of activities and experiences). I like to do my own thing and set my own agenda – it usually means more work, but more flexibility in the long run.

If I’m travelling interstate or overseas I usually send an email to the tourism body, but if I’m only after accommodation or on-ground support, I tend to contact the appropriate PR agency or the hotel directly.

Sponsorship letter sample

The sample email below is the template I use when requesting to be hosted. As you can see, it’s pretty flexible and you can change it as you need to, but it has everything a travel writer needs to include to ensure that your request is looked upon in a favourable light.

Dear tourism body/PR agency/tourism operator,

My name is Lindy Alexander and I am a freelance food and travel writer based in Australia.

I am looking to travel to [location] in [month/year] to write an article about [topic/angle].

My work has been published widely in [name of magazines, newspapers or websites] and I write regularly for [publication names].

Once I’ve arrived in [destination] I would be keen to stay for [number of days] and [add in which activities you’d like to do, hotels you’d like to stay at, restaurants that you’d like to eat at and so on].

I anticipate placing a story about X [give the specific angle of at least one article you’re planning on pitching] for X publication [circulation XX].

To put this story together, I am looking for hosting in terms of [list what you need such as airfare, hotel accommodation, admission, access to particular people to interview and meals].

Would you be able to let me know whether this fits within your current focus and hosting capabilities?

If so, I look forward to any suggestions you may have on making this story great or any new experiences that are on offer in [location].

Samples of my work are available here: link to portfolio

I look forward to hearing from you and working together,

Lindy Alexander

But what if you’re not sure you can place a story with a particular publication?

You can always say something like:

I would be looking to secure commissions from either X magazine [add a brief description and website, e.g. “Australia’s premier food and travel magazine with a readership in excess of 700,000], X magazine [description and website] or X magazine [description and web address].

I look forward to hearing whether you think these publications are of interest and whether you may be able to host me if I secured a commission with one of these magazines.

My results using this email

So far, I’ve had only positive responses to these requests. At the very least, most operators will come back and say they are happy to host me provided I can secure a commission with at least one of the publications mentioned. I know some writers are happy to go on trips without having a firm commission, but I like to have a definite commission from at least one publication before I accept any offer of hosting or sponsorship.

Sometimes the organisation or agency offering the hosting wants to know more information (such as the particular angle of the piece or if a piece is commissioned then when it may be published or, and this is particularly the case for tourism bodies, if I can get additional stories published from the one trip).

There is definitely an art to pitching tourism boards in order to get sponsorship for travel, but I’ve found that if I have a publishing history with a particular magazine or newspaper or if I can clearly identify a niche I write about , then I’m much more likely to get a yes to my proposal.

·      Check that the tourism board/PR agency/tourism operator are happy to host you before you pitch to an editor

·      Tourism boards have to consider a number of factors such as availability of finances and their particular focus for the year/season (e.g. themes or events or destinations they want to highlight) before they will host freelance writers

·      If you have a strong social media following it can also be worth mentioning that you’re also looking forward to sharing information about the destination with your followers

·      If you can access them, it’s always worth adding in publication circulation numbers

READER TIP: Travel and lifestyle writer Jennifer Morton adds: “One thing I would add (that worked for me) is to put a call-out on TravMedia. I had a commission so I asked for hosting (ground support only) in a general call-out and got a free night’s accommodation, a walking tour of the city and a few good contacts in return.”

Have you gone on many famils or hosted trips? Would you add anything to the request above?

Sponsor a Refugee You Know

There are thousands of people in the United States eager to help family members or friends who have been displaced. Through the Welcome Corps, your group can apply to sponsor someone you know.

Who can I sponsor?

Your group can sponsor a refugee or refugee family (up to 10 people) at a time. The individual(s) listed on your sponsorship application can be of any nationality but must meet the definition of a refugee under U.S. law and all of the following criteria:

  • They live outside their home country.
  • They do not live in the United States.
  • If you are applying to sponsor more than one person, all refugees must currently live in the same country and plan to live in the same household once they resettle to the United States.
  • They live in a country where the U.S. government is able to interview sponsored refugees and process their cases.
  • Afghanistan
  • Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
  • Lichtenstein
  • The Netherlands
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Korea
  • Switzerland
  • Turkmenistan
  • United Kingdom

The above list is subject to change and may be revised as country conditions evolve.

Registration

  • They are already registered on or before September 30, 2023, as a refugee or asylum seeker by the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) or by the government of the country where they live. Refugees of Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, or Venezuelan nationality are also eligible if someone filed Form I-134 or I-134A on their behalf before September 30, 2023. They must have been outside their country of nationality by the time the form was filed.
  • If the refugee or refugee family already has a case number for the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) or Afghan SIV program, you can submit your application to sponsor them regardless of their current location.
  • They are at least 18 years old or, if they are a child, they are being referred with their parent. Without exception, anyone under 18 must be referred with their biological parent or legal guardian.
  • They have not been previously denied for resettlement to the United States through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
  • Everyone you apply to sponsor will need to pass the U.S. government’s refugee screening and vetting process to be approved for resettlement in the United States. There is no guarantee that the individuals you apply to sponsor will be approved to come to the United States.

Exit visa permissions

  • There may be additional requirements for refugees living in certain countries. Every refugee must meet the exit visa requirements for the host country. Refugees who are approved for U.S. resettlement are responsible for paying any fines for overstaying their visa to obtain exit permission to leave the country where they currently live. The U.S. government will not cover these costs.

Is my friend or family member eligible?

Use this helpful tool to check whether the refugee or refugee family you hope to sponsor is eligible to be considered for resettlement through the Welcome Corps.

Easy Expat - International Relocation Portal: Move, Work, Live Abroad

The largest country in the world at 17,075,400 square kilometres (or 6,592,800 sq mi), Russia has accumulated quite an impressive reputation. Covering more than an eight of the Earth's land area, 142 million people live there making it the ninth largest nation by population . Still known for its impressive days as the expansive Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Russia was the world's first and largest constitutionally socialist state. A recognized superpower, the USSR was known for its excellence in both arts and science winning many awards in both fields.

Russia changed drastically after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, but it continues to be a powerful and important nation. It has one of the world's fastest growing economies and the world's eight largest GDP by nominal GDP. Russia is also one of the five countries which officially recognized nuclear weapons states. In conjunction with this title, Russia is also a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the G8, APEC and the SCO, and is a leading member of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

A European city in a country that lies over a vast part of Asia, Moscow holds one-tenth of all Russian residents . The city is located in the western region of Russia and is the capital and epicentre of political, economic, cultural, religious, financial, educational, and transportation happenings. "Muscovites" , as residents are known, tend to be cultured and worldly. This may be due to the many scientific, educational, and artistic institutions that are based here. An intoxicating mix of the exotic and the familiar, it is the largest city in Europe with the Moscow metropolitan area ranking among the largest urban areas in the world.

The city is situated on the banks of the Moskva River which flows through much of central Russia. Moscow is actually located in a basin for the Volga, Oka, Klyazma, and Moscow rivers. The city of Moscow is 994 sq. km with 49 bridges spanning the rivers and canals that criss-cross the city.

Forests are another part of Moscow's make-up. They coveer over a third of the territory in the region. A variety of animals like elk, wild boar, deer, foxes, weasels, lynx, martens, and birds make their home here.

Located in the UTC+3 time zone , Moscow has a humid continental climate. The summers tend to be warm and humid and the winters are long, cold, and hard. High temperatures occur during the warm months of June, July and August at about 23 °C (73 °F). Heat waves sometimes grip the city anywhere between May to September with temperatures spiking up to 30 °C (86 °F). Winters are harshly chilly with temperatures dropping to approximately 9 °C (15.8 °F). There is consistent snow cover for 3 to 5 months a year, usually from November to March.

American airlines changes passenger rules for earning miles — and travel agencies are pissed.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

American Airlines has multiple travel advisors up in arms after it announced plans to restrict AAdvantage Miles earnings for certain booking agencies.

The airline behemoth  announced  in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change will take effect on May 1, but American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

American Airlines announced in February that flyers hoping to earn AAdvantage miles for their flights will have to do so directly through American, their airline partners, or preferred travel agencies recognized by the company.

The change comes as part of the airline’s effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

The airline has tried to convince agencies using the older booking systems to upgrade to newer platforms like the one American uses on its website.

While American  announced  a list would be shared in “late April,” agencies unsure if they’ll make the cut are expressing their distaste for the major change.

The American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), Association of Canadian Travel Agencies and Advisors (ACTA), Foro Latinoamericano de Turismo (FOLATUR), and World Travel Agents Associations Alliance (WTAA) emphasized that any plans to restrict their clients’ earning miles could be detrimental to their agencies.

“It’s clear from the consensus among WTAAA, ACTA and FOLATUR, representing travel professionals around the world, the detriment that American’s decision will have on the travel industry globally,” President and CEO of ASTA, Zane Kerby, told  Travel and Tour World .

American has yet to reveal which agencies will be included in its “preferred agencies.”

Kerby called out American for “operating in bad faith” and was “looking to pad its bottom line at the expense of our valued clients and the millions of consumers who rely on their trusted travel advisor.”

Henry Harteveldt, president of the travel industry market research firm Atmosphere Research Group, told  Fodor’s Travel  the move is a “very inward-looking” perspective on American Airlines.

“It’s not a very consumer-friendly approach, and American is being a bit of a bully here,” Harteveldt explained — adding the move will put loyalty airline members in the crossfire of the company’s dispute with agencies.

The change comes as part of the airline's effort to minimize costs for agencies using older technology booking systems.

Harteveldt believes the move is also being monitored by the company’s competitors, who may adopt the change if it’s a success or whose sales teams may swoop in to poach any American flyers unpleased with the new method.

“As risky as American’s actions are, a lot of airlines are watching to see if it works out well for them, because if it does, I would not be surprised to see United and Delta copy it in certain ways,” he told the outlet.

While the airline is deadset on the change, Brett Snyder — author of the popular travel industry blog Crankyflier and CEO of the travel assistance service Cranky Concierge — said the move could cause “confusion” for the company’s flyers who already are trying to navigate their “frequent changes.”

American Airlines said they change is set to take effect May 1.

“The biggest impact will likely be on business travelers who may not have a choice of where to book depending upon company policy,” Snyder told the outlet.

“The fact that American still hasn’t told everyone who is or is not preferred adds more to the confusion.”

As the airline industry waits to hear who American will list as their “preferred agencies,” occasional travelers may also feel the weight of the change, Snyder explained.

He worries that some agencies may not disclose that to their customers during the booking process.

World Travel Agents Associations Alliance calls itself the global voice of the travel agency distribution channel.

Also, the move could affect cruise lines that book airfares as part of their packages, who may opt against using certain agencies not listed as one of American’s preferred agencies.

The changes will only affect travelers who collect AAdvantage Miles for their flights on American.

Flyers using corporate accounts with American will continue to earn miles for their flights no matter which booking channel they use unless they book a Basic Economy fare.

Travelers collecting miles from other Oneworld partners—the global airline alliance American is a member of with 13 other Airlines, such as British Airways, Qatar Airways, and Malaysia Airlines—will continue to earn miles for American Airlines flights regardless of booking channel.

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.
