Recent tour reviews

Judy Collins’ voice is as powerful and beautiful as ever. She was so funny sharing stories of her life and the people in the music industry that she continues to make music with. Her pianist Russell was wonderful too. It was a thoroughly entertaining evening listening to her old standards that we all love and some of her new music. I wish we could’ve had a meet and greet afterwards but I bought her CD albums.

I'm a long-time fan of Judy Collins. I last saw her on tour with Stephen Stills to promote Everybody Knows, the Stills-Collins album. With so many artists from the 60s & 70s doing retirement tours, I decided to take advantage of her local appearance. I am happy to report that she is still in excellent voice. As artist known for her vocal range, and the beauty of her tone, she is still able to deliver a breathtaking, emotional array of classic favorite songs, and newly written ones as well.

Her onstage patter, and storytelling, though practiced, is endearing and entertaining. If you are a fan, do yourself a favor and see Judy Collins while she is still touring to a city near you.

I loved the concert. Judy's opening singer was great, but I was anticipating Judy. She looks as great as ever. 99.9% of her music was spot on, even though she had a few wavering notes and one flat note. I can forgive her, since her career is 60 years long and she is 80 years old. We had a great time, especially because the smartphone banishment was in effect.

Judy Collins Revisits ‘Wildflowers’ at NYC Performance

Judy Collins performed the entirety of her 1967 album, Wildflowers , last night (Feb. 25) at the Town Hall in New York City.

Backed by a 15-piece orchestra, the Harlem Chamber Players (conducted by Tania Leon), the performance served as a celebration of the album's recent 55th anniversary. Collins was also joined on piano by her musical director, Russell Walden.

"I want you to know you're looking at the 'American Idol' of 1956," Collins joked before launching into "Mountain Girl," a song from 2019. She then noted that her first performance at the Town Hall had taken place nearly 60 years ago in 1964, which was recorded and made into a live album,  The Judy Collins Concert . "A lot of you were here!" she said. "Some of you weren't born yet!"

Collins then performed  Wildflowers  in full, which featured new string arrangements performed by the Harlem Chamber Players.

Wildflowers , Collins' sixth album, was her first to feature original music. One day, Leonard Cohen , whose work Collins had covered on previous albums, asked her why she didn't write her own songs. She immediately went home and wrote "Since You've Asked" in less than an hour. "It either takes a long time or a little time. But it takes tension. It takes what it takes," Collins explained to UCR of her songwriting in 2022. "Sitting down, letting the thing happen, praying that the muse will show up, and the muse, whoever the muse is — and I don't know who my muse is, maybe it's Leonard, probably in some form or other — but it's always a mystery, and it will remain a mystery."

Wildflowers  is also notable for the inclusion of Joni Mitchell 's "Both Sides, Now," which would not be recorded by Mitchell herself until 1969's  Clouds . It was Collins' version that initially became a hit, reaching No. 8 on the  Billboard  Hot 100. (Also featured on Wildflowers is Mitchell's "Michael From the Mountains," and three songs penned by Cohen, "Sisters of Mercy," "Priests" and "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye.")

Collins, who is 83, released her most recent album, Spellbound , in 2022 — her first album to feature exclusively original material. At the Town Hall, she joked that 83 "is the new 25," but also noted, as she sat at the piano to play a few selections from  Spellbound , that she wished she could call Cohen up to tell him she'd finally written an entire album of original songs.

"I was raised in an environment in which I knew that I was going to be doing this for the rest of my life," she told UCR in 2022. "[This] is the only way that I stay on the planet."

Collins is currently scheduled to tour the U.S. through most of 2023, with more performances in the U.K. this fall.

Judy Collins - Live At The Town Hall, NYC Out Today

Article contributed by shore fire media | published on saturday, august 28, 2021.

judy collins tour setlist

Judy Collins has released her new album Live At The Town Hall, NYC , today. She recorded it live at the Town Hall in New York City with a full band in February of this year, when she hosted a livestream concert from the historic and otherwise empty venue due to the pandemic. This new live recording revisits her legendary 1964 performance at the Town Hall, which was her solo concert debut in NYC. In February, Collins revisited nearly the same setlist as her 1964 concert, including “Winter Sky,” “My Ramblin Boy,” “Coal Tattoo” and “Cruel Mother.” Collins’ setlist reflected the need for comfort and protest in light of the turmoil that beset the nation, both then and now. New additions to the setlist include longtime standards in her repertoire including “Both Sides Now” and “Send In The Clowns.”

In July, Collins also premiered Since You’ve Asked, her very own podcast series. Hosted by Collins, it features some of her favorite musicians, artists and luminaries from her colorful life including Jeff Daniels, Julia Cameron, Ben Harper, Arlo Guthrie, Clive Davis, Molly Jong Fast, Christiane Amanpour, Jac Holzman, Betty Buckley and Pat Allerton. Several episodes have aired, with the remainder of the season posting every other Thursday into October. The most recent episode features London’s “portable priest” and Vicar Pat Allerton, who broadcast Collins’ famous 1970 recording of “Amazing Grace” onto the streets and outside of hospitals in London during his sermons as the pandemic first unfolded in spring of 2020. The next episode will feature Betty Buckley on September 9th.

The podcast is available on all major platforms and distributed by SIMPLECAST: https://since-youve-asked.simplecast.com/

Collins has also returned to the road this summer and fall, see below for tour dates:
