Last month NF returned with the stirring new single “HOPE” ( NF Real Music/Virgin Music ). Hope is accompanied by a suitably uplifting visual, which captures the MC’s defiance and authenticity. Watch it HERE .

Next up is NF’s facetious “MOTTO”, of which The New York Times says, “in his early career, NF sounded as if he was internalizing all the pressures of the world, but now he sounds free and calm, dismissing those same pressures with a shrug.” Watch the pointed video HERE.

HOPE   is the fifth studio album from the Billboard chart-topping, multi-platinum artist. Known for rapping quick-witted lyrics over hip hop beats and cinematic production, NF has built an obsessively loyal fanbase that has earned him over 30 billion global streams and established NF as one of the most consumed artists today. NF’s  HOPE  is a 13-track album boasting instant hits, such as “HAPPY”, “MOTTO” and notable Grammy-nominated features with singer/songwriter Julia Michaels on “GONE,” and rapper Cordae on “CAREFUL”.

NF raps with raw grit and emotional authenticity, born of a lifetime of taking hits and getting back up again. He’s earned 39 RIAA certifications,14 Platinum plaques, and 5 multi-Platinum honors. This success stems from genuine fan-fueled momentum — connecting directly with fans in an authentic way.

His intimate yet propulsive tracks received two consecutive No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200 with Perception and The Search. Often silent on self-promotion and social media, NF’s massive achievements come straight from his music and lyrics resonating with fans. As Forbes noted, “NF’s success speaks to what can be done these days outside of the traditional system, proving that with his strong fan base and his incredible drive, the success of NF is a true testament to his status as a talent in the hip hop world.”

Nate Feuerstein came of age in Michigan, using music as both escape and expression, a way to channel his pain. Through the years, he’s demonstrated the power of vulnerability on hits like “Let You Down” and “The Search.” In 2015, he signed with Capitol Records; thus setting the stage to climb to rap dominance beginning with his album, Mansion followed by Therapy Session in 2016 and Perception in 2017, which debuted at No. 1 and eventually went 2x Platinum. In 2019, he dropped The Search, which also hit No. 1 and went Platinum. His 2021 project CLOUDS (THE MIXTAPE), an inward-looking mixtape, again connected deeply with listeners, debuting within the top three on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums Chart and Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums Chart.

Today, NF has tipped into global dominance having generated 30 billion streams and worldwide touring that has sold over half a million tickets to date. Emerging from a year of no new releases yet remaining one of the most consumed artists in the world, NF announces his forthcoming fifth studio album, HOPE.

About Cordae:

Cordae knows exactly what he wants to say. He chooses his words and phrases carefully. He speaks from a place of truth. That’s why the two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated gold-selling Maryland-raised rapper has quietly become one of the modern generation’s most trusted narrators. A remarkable life has given him a lot to say. He went from trailer parks and public housing with his mom to stratospheric success. After a series of buzzing singles, he reached critical mass with his 2019 full-length debut, The Lost Boy. It bowed in the Top 15 of the Billboard Top 200 and included four gold-certified singles— “RNP” [feat. Anderson .Paak], “Have Mercy,” “Broke As Fuck,” and “Kung Fu.” Beyond unanimous praise from Billboard, Complex, High Snobiety, New York Times, Pitchfork, and Stereogum, he garnered a pair of GRAMMY® Award nominations in the categories of “Best Rap Album” for The Lost Boy and “Best Rap Song” for “Bad Idea” [feat. Chance the Rapper].

He’s the rare artist whose presence can be felt on-screen in a Super Bowl commercial alongside legendary Academy® Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and among XXL’s coveted “Freshman Class.” Along the way, he linked up with Roddy Ricch and Ant Clemons for “Gifted” as well as joining forces with Eminem for “Killer.” Absorbing wisdom from a life-changing trip to Africa, enduring the loss of a friend gone too soon, and evolving as an artist and a man, he tells this story in widescreen technicolor on his 2022 second full-length offering, From A Birds Eye View [ART@WAR/Atlantic Records]. Cordae followed up the release of his sophomore album with the Facebook exclusive premiere of his visual only, From A Birds Eye View (Live) album. This past summer, he debuted his first TED Talk entitled “The Hi-Level Mindset” which has accumulated over 1.4M views. He continued his takeover of 2022 with a flurry of releases and collaborations. From the release of his Unacceptable EP and the accompanying visuals from both singles, to his recent collab with Hit-Boy on their “Checkmate” track from the Madden NFL 2023 Soundtrack, Cordae is showing no signs of slowing down.

NF Announces North American ‘Hope Tour’

hope tour calgary

Today, Michigan rapper and producer NF  announces his HOPE TOUR. The massive 47 show runs across the US, Canada, Europe, and UKin support of his forthcoming studio album, HOPE, releasing April 7. Produced by Live Nation, the North American leg of the tour will feature special guest Cordae and kick off on Wednesday, July 12th at Schottenstein Center in Columbus making stops across the U.S. in Philadelphia, Anaheim, Denver, and more before wrapping up in Laval at Place Bell on Sunday, September 3rd. The 16-date European leg kicks off on September 23rd at the Fabrique in Milan making stops in Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, and more before wrapping up in London at Eventim Apollo on October 15th.

Last month NF returned with the stirring new single “HOPE” (NF Real Music/Virgin Music). The song finds the multi-Platinum hitmaker at his most raw and unfiltered as he assesses his musical journey thus far and looks to the future. Hope is accompanied by a suitably uplifting visual, which captures the MC’s defiance and authenticity. Watch it HERE.

Next up is NF’s facetious “MOTTO”, of which The New York Times says, “in his early career, NF sounded as if he was internalizing all the pressures of the world, but now he sounds free and calm, dismissing those same pressures with a shrug.”

Kristina Kuzmic: The Hope and Humor Tour

Kristina Kuzmic: The Hope and Humor Tour

Kristina Kuzmic’s Hope & Humor show is more than a comedy special. It’s an hour that will leave every viewer feeling less alone and more empowered to face whatever chaos life throws their way. Kristina, in her undeniably authentic way, takes us on a peaks and valley journey full of laughter and even a few tears, with a through-line of four things she's done wearing: other people's judgements, guilt, the pressure to be perfect, and the unrealistic fantasy of what life should look like. Many have described her show as stand-up-comedy meets a great therapy session and have raved that the show left them feeling validated and empowered. From motherhood, to divorc raved that the show left them feeling validated and empowered. From motherhood, to divorce, poverty, mental health struggles, and learning to embrace her authenticity, Kristina delivers her stories with full vulnerability and always leaves us with both laughter and hope, culminating in a unique final act that you have to watch. Kristina’s goal is to be for others what she needed when she was at her lowest. When Kristina hit rock bottom, newly divorced with two young kids, on food stamps, depressed, suicidal and feeling like she might never crawl out of the darkness, the only thing she felt confident in was that she could cook a great meal on a tiny budget. In a desperate attempt to find her worth, she began cooking for strangers. Her Wednesday Night Dinners helped her realize that, even when she felt like she had nothing, she still had something to offer. She is now passionate about helping others prioritize their mental health and not allow the few things that are completely out of their control to control them completely. This event is age restricted; must be 18+ to enter.

The Federation of Calgary Communities puts on the local event, which this year will run from Friday to Sunday. Co-ordinator Adam Schwartz said there will be more than 50 tours this weekend, with topics ranging from public art to history and nature.

The Jane’s Walks not only promote Calgary’s communities in a unique, volunteer-driven way, Schwartz said, but also forge connections among neighbours.

“You often meet people who live on your street or in your neighbourhood,” he said. “It creates these cool connections that otherwise wouldn’t happen.”

The walks began in 2007 in memory of Jane Jacobs , a journalist from New York and Toronto whose writing influenced grassroots involvement in urban planning.

“She was really focused on community building, pedestrian-oriented streets and getting to know your neighbourhood,” Schwartz said.

“It spread globally, so pretty much every continent now has a version of the Jane’s Walk festival.”

Some of the walks featured this weekend include a tour focused on the East Village’s architecture and culture on Friday morning, a historic walking tour of Bowness’ Main Street and its businesses on Saturday morning, and a tour of energy-efficient homes in the Winston Heights/Tuxedo Park communities, also on Saturday morning.

Schwartz said he would tout the Peter Lougheed House’s tour of its garden as a highlight this year, as well as the “Keep Sunnyside Weird” walk, which focuses on less formal parts of the inner-city community, such as its public art and murals.

He also touted the History of Crescent Heights Heritage Walk.

Given the high public interest in the outcome of a blanket rezoning proposal this year, Schwartz said the topic of neighbourhoods has been at the forefront of discussion in Calgary, which could generate additional interest in the Jane’s Walks.

“I think there’s obviously been a lot of chat about how people connect to their communities,” he said. “I think this is just a way to hear the stories of your community, whether that’s the history, the people in it, the amenities within it — it’s just a great way to get to know your neighbourhood better.”

Calgary city hall set for largest-ever public hearing as blanket rezoning debate arrives at council

City expects meeting will take days with more than 650 people registered to speak.

Social Sharing

Calgary city council is bracing to hear from hundreds of people during what's anticipated to be the city's largest public hearing — ever — on Monday.

The highly anticipated hearing is centred around blanket rezoning and a strategy the city hopes will improve housing affordability, but a number of communities worry it will fundamentally change the character of their neighbourhoods.

Nearly 650 people had signed up to speak as of Thursday, with an additional 5,155 written submissions.

"This has become connected to some of the pretty deep polarization that's out there," said Lori Williams, a political scientist at Mount Royal University's policy studies department.

"This has become a bit of a flashpoint."

So how did Calgary get here?

In 2022, the City of Calgary developed the Housing and Affordability Task Force. The proposal for blanket rezoning was one of the group's recommendations and it became a key part of the city's housing strategy, which was approved in September 2023.

Much of the controversy surrounding the strategy, if it's approved, centres on the fact that it would allow for different housing types, such as townhomes and six-plexes, to be built in neighbourhoods that currently only allow single-family homes.

The city says that blanket rezoning is a response to missing-middle housing , meaning that there's a gap in available housing options for those hoping to upgrade from an apartment, but not quite ready for a single-family home.

A woman walks past a multi-family townhouse project in Inglewood.

According to the city's Housing Needs Assessment , approximately 84,600 Calgary households were forced to shell out more than 30 per cent of their total income on housing in 2021, meaning that one in five households struggled to afford their housing costs.

As a response to this 2023 report, city council held a three-day public hearing in September, where 162 residents shared their concerns about the housing crisis.

This marathon meeting resulted in councillors voting 12-3 in favour of a new plan for housing, knowing that blanket rezoning — in other words, amending the land-use bylaws — was part of that pitch.

 • City council approves new 'gamechanger' housing strategy for Calgary

But before the zoning bylaws can be amended, the new plan has to go through this week's public hearing process.

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek told CBC News on Thursday that council needs to listen.

"When you have decisions that are a yes or no vote, there are people that feel like they've won and people that feel like they've lost, whether it's the public or whether it's members of council," said Gondek.

"I think the most important thing to remember on this item is: are we doing the right thing for the future of our city? Are we ensuring that we will have the housing supply that we need? That is the number-one thing that we need to address."

But many residents think the city is on the wrong track with its blanket solution.

70% of respondents opposed

In the city's What We Heard report released in mid-April following public engagement on upzoning, residents raised a number of key themes they hope the city will consider before voting on the proposed rezoning.

The report included comments from 1,050 participants at nine project information sessions, 465 participants from various webinars and 4,959 comments from 3,930 participants through the city's online engagement portal.

The majority of the comments they received were from people opposed to the proposal to amend the city's land-use bylaws. Approximately 70 per cent of the feedback the city received expressed concern about rezoning, while the remaining 30 per cent were in favour.

What's more, 52 community associations have signed a letter to the city in opposition to the proposal.

a red and white flyer from the city of calgary.

Proponents of the rezoning say it's a step toward addressing the strain on housing demand by creating greater supply, improving affordability and densifying neighbourhoods to improve the local economy.

Concerns raised by opponents of the land-use change include worries about its effect on available parking and the character of their neighbourhoods, as well as the impact of the rezoning on property values. Many opponents also say it won't address the immediate issue of housing affordability.

Legal action from concerned citizens

City council has been grappling with how to navigate this contentious topic since it was first proposed.

Back in March, six councillors proposed sending the issue to a plebiscite — which would mean Calgarians could vote on rezoning during the October 2025 municipal election. That idea was eventually torpedoed following an 8-6 vote .

 • 6 city councillors want to send Calgary's rezoning proposal to a plebiscite
 • City council votes against holding plebiscite for zoning overhaul

On Friday, two citizens opposed to the blanket rezoning applied for a judicial review of city council's decision to not hold a plebiscite on the issue.

Robert Lehodey, one of the co-applicants, believes a plebiscite would have given Calgarians the opportunity to have their say.

He says the goal of this application for a judicial review would be for a court to examine the process of determining not to hold a plebiscite and "shine a spotlight on council's failure."

Lehodey is a retired lawyer who has lived in Calgary since he was in high school. He believes that Calgary's elected officials aren't capable of being persuaded by the people they represent.

"Let's face it, people bought their homes in R-C1 and R-C2 communities. They did it based on the rules that existed around zoning," he told CBC News on Friday. "To change those rules … unilaterally, without the input of Calgarians, is frankly inappropriate on the part of council."

a collage of five images show different housing types.

Lehodey, who lives in a single-family home in southwest Calgary, says that this proposal, if passed, would strip rights from property owners.

"The city councillors will also dress this up and say, 'This is a housing crisis, and this is going to make housing more affordable,' and frankly it's not about those issues. That's how they're dressing it up," said Lehodey.

"What this is about is taking away a fundamental right of property owners."

Recently, there have been worries the debate over the issue could boil over into something more.

Last month, two walking tours organized by the city to show people examples of what mixed-use residential blocks look like were cancelled due to safety concerns, according to organizers.

 • Walking tour on rezoning proposal cancelled due to safety concerns
 • Hundreds attend S.E. councillor's meetings to voice concerns about upzoning proposal

Ward 12 Coun. Evan Spencer says he's noticed his constituents' frustrations.

"I'm certainly worried about the position this puts both the planning department and council in," Spencer said.

"We're going to have a lot of work to do if this passes. And even if not, this is a massive reputational hit to the City of Calgary right now when we really don't need it."

A group of people stand on outdoor stair steps and smile for a photo.

Spencer conducted his own survey in Ward 12, the results of which suggested this isn't a popular idea among the respondents.

He says he's excited for the public hearing to showcase more information about the proposal to rezone.

Case-by-case basis

Currently, rezoning happens when a property owner applies for a change to build something other than what their local zoning allows.

City council makes the final decision on whether to approve or refuse a rezoning application after a public hearing. If approved, the applicant can then submit a development permit application with their specific plan.

Right now, the city says 95 per cent of rezoning applications that come through the council chamber are approved.

When it comes to this new proposal, blanket rezoning would mean that areas currently zoned for only single or semi-detached homes will be rezoned to R-CG, R-G or H-GO, which would allow for townhomes and row houses. But proposed developments would still need to go through the city's development permit and approval processes.

This rezoning would not mean that apartment buildings would be allowed on the rezoned land. Further, new single and semi-detached homes would still be allowed to be built. The city also says that no parks will be redeveloped for housing as a result of this rezoning proposal.

Josh White, Calgary's director of city and regional planning, says that about two-thirds of the city's land base is currently zoned for single-detached homes. Under Calgary's current land use rules, a single-detached home could only be replaced with another home of the same type.

White told the CBC podcast This is Calgary that the citywide rezoning proposal is a necessary step toward solving the city's housing crunch.

hope tour calgary

But some say there's still an opportunity for compromise.

"There are certainly strong views on both sides," Williams said.

Williams says city council has an opportunity to get creative with how they can find middle ground between the various sides of this debate.

"We're getting a pretty large influx of new residents on a daily basis, and that affects all kinds of folks in all kinds of parts in the city," she said.

Lori Williams

"I think there is a need to try to address the problem now, and to do so in a way that is less time-consuming than the current process is. And then it's just a matter of exploring and trying to find something that allows for concerned residents to voice concerns about particular proposals for housing changes."

Federal funds

Funding from the federal government could also be at stake if this proposal doesn't go through.

Announced near the end of last year, the federal government agreed to give $228 million to Calgary over a four-year period for the construction of 6,800 new homes as part of the Housing Accelerator Fund .

After being sent a letter from the federal minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Gondek took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express concerns that Ottawa wouldn't fund the city's housing strategy unless zoning laws were changed.

As we start deliberations on how we best address Calgary’s housing crisis, #yyccc has just received this letter of support from the federal minister of housing @SeanFraserMP - we will jeopardize or lose federal funding if we do not approve the full strategy. We must act now. pic.twitter.com/PRVDWOPPfV — @JyotiGondek

Gondek told CBC News on Friday that anything is still possible when it comes to the rezoning proposal.

"I would remind everyone that even if this rezoning goes through, this is incremental change. The city is not coming to knock down homes and put up something else. It is still up to the property owner," she said.

"For the neighbourhoods that are saying there's no one on my street or in my neighbourhood that wants this, well then you'll see no change."

 • City of Calgary hears concerns about neighbourhood integrity at rezoning open house
 • Analysis 'Blanket rezoning' brings sweeping change — on paper. In practice, it's often incremental

She believes the city has not acted fast enough when it comes to creating relief for the housing crisis within the past year.

In a news release sent Thursday, the city says the public hearing will extend over multiple days because of how many speakers are expected.

"There are many Calgarians who think it's a good idea. There are many Calgarians who are incredibly concerned about this," said Gondek.

"I'm looking forward to listening to everyone and understanding how we make the best move."

A snorkeller above bleached and dead staghorn coral off Heron Island

Great Barrier Reef’s worst bleaching leaves giant coral graveyard: ‘It looks as if it has been carpet bombed’

Scientists stunned by scale of destruction after summer of storm surges, cyclones and floods

Beneath the turquoise waters off Heron Island lies a huge, brain-shaped Porites coral that, in health, would be a rude shade of purplish-brown. Today that coral outcrop, or bommie, shines snow white.

Prof Terry Hughes, a coral bleaching expert at James Cook University, estimates this living boulder is at least 300 years old.

“If that thing had eyes it could have looked up and watched Captain Cook sail past,” he says, back on the pristine beach of this speck of an island 80km offshore at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef .

It is not just Heron’s grand old bommie that is freshly bleached. The surrounding tangle of staghorn corals, or Acropora , are splashed in swathes of white, or painted a dappled mosaic of greens and browns that betray the algae and seaweeds growing over the freshly killed coral. Hughes estimates 90% of those branching corals are dead or dying.

Terry Hughes inspects the coral around the Heron Island research station

Snorkelling above these blighted coral thickets evokes the imagery of forests annihilated by bushfires, or cities obliterated by missiles.

“It looks as if it has been carpet bombed,” says the Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who has accompanied Hughes to Heron. “Like limbs strewn everywhere.”

Even Hughes, a man who has witnessed as much mass mortality of coral as any, looks shellshocked.

The Dublin-born, Townsville-based marine biologist already knew the coral ringing Heron had just experienced its worst recorded bleaching – and that this was no isolated event .

Last month the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority released a report warning that the reef was experiencing “the highest levels of thermal stress on record”. The authority’s chief scientist, Dr Roger Beeden, spoke of extensive and uniform bleaching across the southern reefs, which had dodged the worst of much of the previous four mass bleaching events to blight the Great Barrier Reef since 2016.

Hughes saw in the institute’s aerial surveys results the most “widespread event and severe” bleaching event to date, not just in the south, but across much of the entire system – which stretches 2,300km up the Queensland coast.

Aerial video shows mass coral bleaching on Great Barrier Reef amid global heat stress event – video

But none of these metrics, it seems, could truly prepare him for the act of bearing witness to the unfolding calamity he has dedicated his life to preventing.

“It’s fucking awful,” the softly spoken scientist says, emerging from the ocean. “They said the bleaching was extensive and uniform. They didn’t say it was extensive, uniform and fucking awful.

“It’s a graveyard out there.”

Hughes and Green senator Peter Whish-Wilson inspect the coral using a viewing tube

Lethal hot water

The academic director of the University of Queensland research station on Heron, Dr Selina Ward, doesn’t mince words either. She describes this as “the year from hell”.

Storm surges washed away some of her favourite stands of corals, there have been outbreaks of coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish, cyclones and floods. But these “multiple assaults” pale compared with this most “horrendous bleaching”.

The bleaching peaked in February and March. At the end of March, Ward visited 16 sites around Heron and nearby reefs, including around One Tree Island – a scientific reserve with “the maximum level of protection you can get”.

“It was terrible, the worst bleaching event I’ve ever seen,” she says. “In those 16 sites, every single one was severely bleached – and some of the corals were starting to die already.”

Her big question, though, is what is happening under the water right now.

Corals bleach when sustained exposure to warmer than average water causes them to expel the photosynthetic algae that give them colour – and from which the corals polyps obtain much of their nutrients.

A coral can die or recover from bleaching. The weeks that follow a bleaching event are a brief window in which scientists like Ward and Hughes can assess how many corals have starved without their symbiotic algae. In a few months, those newly dead corals will be covered in weed and beginning to be broken down into barren rubble piles – the time and cause of their demise will become more and more obscured.

The reef is now in that window, Ward says, where scientists can get into the water and observe the amount of bleached corals that – though left more vulnerable to disease and less fertile – might just regain colour and pull through. As well as those that will not.

Great Barrier Reef suffering ‘most severe’ coral bleaching on record – video

But bleaching is only one coral reaction to what Hughes says is perhaps better described as a hot water event. Some corals will simply “cook”. Others turn a vivid blue or neon yellow – a garish shade our research vessel’s skipper says has been widespread on the corals around Heron.

These, though dazzling, are also disconcerting – this fluorescence is a protein corals produce as a kind of sunscreen. It is not a very effective defence though. According to Hughes, most of these neon corals won’t survive.

“The irony is that it looks beautiful in death,” Whish-Wilson says of a fluorescent coral while he and Hughes wade through knee-deep water as the tide recedes around Heron and coral tips emerge from the water like bones.

Heron Island from the air

The unseen national emergency

After the summer of 2023-24, the Great Barrier Reef is awash in cruel irony and dissonance. The first strikes the traveller to Heron as its Islander catamaran departs its berth and rounds a canal into Gladstone’s harbour.

A hulking and rusty bow is slowly revealed as a bulk carrier connected, by crane-like loaders, to great mounds of crushed black earth. Behind it, another ship is being loaded with coal. And another behind that.

Then, as the catamaran rounds Curtis Island, it ducks and weaves its way through bulk carrier after bulk carrier, lurking outside the harbour like a school of sharks at the edge of a reef. On his phone’s shipping app, Hughes lists 43 of the steel leviathans.

Bulk carriers moored offshore

Whish-Wilson says the flotilla speaks to a government having “a bet each way”.

“But you can’t have a future for fossil fuels and a future for a healthy reef,” he says. “You just can’t.”

Later, reflecting on a trip he already feels will haunt the rest of his life, the Greens healthy oceans spokesperson says this devastating bleaching should trigger Unesco to declare the Great Barrier Reef’s world heritage values as “in danger” and demand a visit from the federal environment minister, as well as a declaration of national emergency.

If this were a bushfire raging across thousands of kilometres, he says, that declaration would already have been made.

“But because it is in the ocean, it is out of mind, out of sight.”

Slim hope of recovery

Another of Heron’s incongruities is that, even amid such underwater devastation, it still harbours breathtaking beauty. Green sea turtles cruise above stands of broken coral, giant coral trout open their mouths and gills for electric blue cleaner wrasse, manta rays glide gracefully through the shallows.

Hughes first came here as a postdoctoral researcher in 1985 and has often returned. Now, as he prepares to leave Heron once more, he ponders the future of a natural wonder of the world to which he has given so much of his life.

A turtle shelters among bleached and dead staghorn coral

The 67-year-old has seen the coral ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef degrade and knows that they are on the inexorable path of further decline. Yet, if global heating can be limited to well below 2C on pre-industrial levels , Hughes still believes it is possible to stabilise sea temperatures and allow those corals that survive to mount a slow recovery.

It is not a question of hope or resignation, he says, but “immediate action”.

Unless fossil fuel emissions are cut “ASAP”, he says, the corals of the world’s reefs will be replaced by something else, perhaps seaweed or sponges.

“There would still be a tropical ecosystem here,” Hughes says with a sweep of his hand. “But at some point we would have to say it is no longer a coral reef. We’d have to call it something else.”

So when will Hughes return to Heron to see what, if anything, recovers? Will he check on that grand old bommie, now snow white?

“I’m not sure I will come back,” he says.

Hughes, left, onboard a research station inflatable

And why not? To this, a long pause, as Hughes looks away and out at the ocean, the only sound a choked sob and the haunting wail of the black noddies that brood and swarm on this troubled coral cay.

“’Cause it’s so upsetting,” he says, eventually.

Not that Hughes plans on staying silent.

“I think scientists like me need to be as vocal as possible,” he says. “To show people what’s happening.”

Paul, Regina Stankowski help ‘forgotten population’ find stability, hope post-foster care

10 Min Read

Change Text Size

On Wednesday afternoon of the Invited Celebrity Classic a few weeks ago, Paul Stankowski striped ball after ball with both accuracy and precision on the Las Colinas Country Club driving range. Nothing was amiss or even out of the norm.

Well, almost nothing.

A popular question among his fellow PGA TOUR Champions players and caddies that afternoon was, simply: “ What is Direction61:3 ?”

When asked directly about the new front-and-center logo on his hat, Stankowski responded with a question of his own.

“How much time do you have?”

Enter Dr. Myron Wilson

As one in the ministry with a past deeply defined by challenging mission trips spanning multiple decades, Wilson has been all over the world and seen a lot that, quite frankly, was hard to see.

The indelible images which troubled Wilson most, though, weren’t anything he found serving in third-world countries. What weighed heaviest on Wilson’s heart was what he found right at home in the heart of Texas.

“I was working in our church one day about 10 years ago when someone in the front office called and asked for my help,” Wilson recalled. "She said, ‘We have a young lady up here that needs to speak with a minister.' I came around the corner and, sure enough, there stood this young girl. I asked her how I could help, to which she said, ‘I don't have any food, money or even parents to claim me. I’m 18 and have no place to go. I have nothing.'"

Following a serious heart-to-heart conversation with his wife, the Wilsons took the girl in to live with them until things got back on track. But, according to Wilson, residual from traumatic experiences in her past left her ill-prepared to hold down a job or even attend school.

“One day, I heard a car door slam out front,” Wilson said. “She just up and left. I've haven’t heard from her since. I called and texted repeatedly, but I got ... nothing.”

Wilson and his wife struggled trying to comprehend the girl’s abrupt and unexplained departure. After all, they had done everything they could to help her, but felt they had failed.

“It actually became a catalyst of sorts,” Wilson said. “I came to discover that thousands of youths in our country turn 18 and immediately become homeless. They age out of foster care.”

Every year in Texas alone, upwards of 600 young men and women hit their 18 th birthday and age out. Nationwide, roughly 30,000 kids age out annually.

“I felt like there needed to be some kind of safety net to catch these kids before they end up out on the street and part of, what we call – the ‘forgotten population ,'" Wilson said.

Enter Direction61:3

The brainchild of Wilson’s assembled team, the organization drew its name from the Book of Isaiah, verse 61:3, in the Bible. To paraphrase, it speaks of rescuing those who are troubled, giving them joy in their heart – instead of mourning – and hope for a future in which they can be planted.

Formed in 2016, Direction61:3 provides older foster and aged-out youth in the Dallas-Fort Worth area a network of support while they transition into independent young adults. The kids, ranging in age from 14-22, are fully supported by way of residential and non-residential programs.

With the first home donated in 2017, Direction61:3 successfully opened its doors in 2018. Today, the organization operates six homes and remains hopeful for two more this summer in North Dallas. Total capacity of the current six is a combined 23 kids.

Knowing he would need as much financial, physical and emotional backing as he could get to make Direction61:3 a success, Wilson and his team included fundraisers in their efforts.

Enter Paul and Regina Stankowski

At one of those fundraisers last year in Lewisville, Texas, Paul’s wife, Regina, not only attended, but enthusiastically offered to begin volunteering. Little time passed before Regina was asked to increase her involvement and join on as an ambassador. In that role, she actively helps raise awareness of Direction61:3.

Eventually, Wilson asked to meet Regina’s husband, who he only knew to be the man behind her magic.

“I didn't know Paul at all,” Wilson admitted. “I had no idea he was a professional golfer. At our first meeting, I actually asked what he did for a living.”

A relationship developed and grew. One of Paul’s action items that has now come to fruition is Birdies for Foster Youth. The objective of the initiative is to have people pledge any dollar amount for every birdie (or better) he makes over the course of the remaining season on PGA TOUR Champions.

“If I can help bring awareness to Direction61:3 that results in a difference here in DFW, I’m all in,” Stankowski said. “If we can even raise enough money to fund a home for a year, that would be great."

Stankowski’s “big picture” hope is to raise at least $100,000.

“This doesn't have to be just a DFW area thing, either,” Stankowski said. “This is just what we're doing right here, right now. But long-term goal, I'm wondering how we all can put a permanent plug in the dike.”

No one involved is under any impression that this is a small dike. But, with the help of people like Paul and Regina Stankowski, consensus is that there can become a fitting plug for a large issue that a large part of society has no awareness of.

Not only do many foster care kids have no family, but they've been bounced around from home to home within the foster care system.

“I had one young man in our ministry who had been in 22 homes,” Wilson said. “Another young lady had been in 18 homes in her high school years … four years – 18 homes.”

Often, foster kids have no stability on which they can rely, Wilson explains. As a result, when they turn 18, they find themselves on the street and very much at risk for homelessness and/or sex trafficking. Wilson points to some powerful statistics show that a majority of those incarcerated for sex crimes also have a history of having been in foster care.

“What makes us unique is that we take youth at age 14,” Wilson said. “That way, we can get and work with them when they're young, before they age out. Once they've gained experience on the outside, or ‘street smarts,' you can try to bring them in and put them into a program, but it's hard for them to adjust to structure after that.”

Because Direction61:3 takes individuals from 14-22 years old, not only do they get an early start in the program, but after aging out of foster care, they can remain in the program.

Direction61:3’s current model involves three-year rentals of residential homes. Professional foster parents are in place to live in the home 24-7.

With three to four youths in one home, the primary goal is to create as much of a normal living condition as possible which, in turn, affords them the confidence to feel just like the “more fortunate” kids not forced to exist in isolation.

Wilson and Direction61:3 currently hold in its possession five acres of land just north of McKinney. In addition to the organization’s headquarters office, if a capital campaign goes well enough, the property will feature 18 cottages and total of 52 kids.

Direction61:3 even features a car program, where donated vehicles work together with the kids working towards a savings account of at least $2,500. The cars are then sold to the kids for that $2,500. But, should the kid remain in certain programs for at least a year after that, the $2,500 is returned to the young adult.

“We give the money back – with interest,” Wilson said. “It teaches them to save for a goal, teaches them discipline and, in turn, it teaches them how to realistically pursue a goal.”

On one occasion, Wilson was alerted to the story of a young lady with a 3.6 GPA, poised to speak at her high school graduation. Wilson was told that the day after that graduation, the girl would turn 18.

“I was told that if I didn’t take her, she would be celebrating the milestone birthday by being taken to a homeless shelter in downtown Dallas,” Wilson said. “She had already been accepted to nursing school. We took her in, and within two years, she had earned and saved enough money to get her car. She's now on the dean's list at Collin College in McKinney, with nearly $20,000 in her savings account.”

Wilson’s contention is that if the individuals are positioned in such a way that they do not have to worry about where they’ll sleep at night and are surrounded by people to coach and guide them, the likelihood of success increases dramatically.

“The way we see it is we're going to do everything we can to influence them while we have them,” he said. “It could be three weeks or three years. But, we’re there for them every step of the way.”

Though countless stories include heart wrenching elements of struggle and strife, Wilson is sustained and even encouraged by the tales of success Direction61:3 is credited for. In one instance, after two years at Direction61:3 – the result of being abandoned on the street at age 16 – one young man went on to graduate from high school, work in management at Chick-fil-A, become a day trader, attend University of North Texas and teach a class in his church.

All that just two years after being left to fend for his 16-year-old self on the streets.

Almost all the kids discharged remain in contact with Wilson.

“They'll text me, call me or even reach out on places like Facebook,” he said. “We've had kids leave and then reach back out to say things like, ‘Hey, I'm going to get baptized. Will you come watch?’ I try to attend those things and always come away with the confidence of knowing here's this kid that was with us in an effort to get his or her life back on track ... and, did it.”

While the success stories do serve as encouragement into the mission working, Wilson isn’t one to lose any of his resilience.

“Some kids come to us from a house with no running water, no electricity,” he said. “We've had kids that were sold in the sex trade by their own family. We’ve had kids that have been locked in closets. They have all types of abuse they've come out of. But, when you put them in a good environment, surround them with caring people, give them time and then watch God work, you’ll see what can take place in that life. It’s pretty rewarding.

"I think people are shocked to know this is an issue. By raising awareness, when people hear about it, there's a positive response. People want to make a difference.”

After the first meeting with Wilson, the Stankowskis attended a fundraiser, where Wilson’s powerful words and accompanying video resonated even more with Paul.

“It just struck a chord in me,” he said. “It was something I never knew about. It wrecked me ... just the thought that this exists.”

Stankowski refused to sit idly by and ignore the plight of a “forgotten population.”

“I didn't have a hat sponsor, so I started wearing their hat,” he said. “I don't need to make any money. In a situation like this, I would so much rather go out and help raise some money.”

And, he is doing just that. Three weeks ago, Stankowski launched “Birdies for Foster Youth,” where he is donating funds for every birdie (or better) he makes on a hole in PGA TOUR Champions competition. He’s inviting any and all others to pledge financial support to the campaign.

Helping him do so is easy. Pledges can be made at any time and from anywhere ... including the comfort of home.
