Great experience from the hotel pickup until the very end. All the guides were super helpful and very patient with a few in our group that were nervous. I had an amazing time and would 100% recommend.

Amazing place! Lunch was incredible! Horseback riding up the mountain! Zip lining 8 courses with fun and amazing guides! They made us laugh and kept it fun! The waterfalls, massage and hot springs were excellent as well! Definitely a place to visit!

This was my husband’s and my second time here and the first time for the other two couples that joined us this time. It was just as fun as the first time and the other two couples, really had a blast! With 8 lines to zip down, you won’t be disappointed!!! The hot springs are nice and relaxing and the food is delicious. If you’re feeling adventurous you should slide down the concrete water slide-lots of fun but a bit scary at the same time (you feel like you’re going to get launched out! Lol).

Great experience! David our tour guide was great and didn't rush us! Zip lining for beginners like my self thru the amazing rain forest views was a breeze learning from them ! Horse back ridding and warm springs. Very clean and organized !

We had a wonderful time at your adventure park!! The staff are amazing! Antonio was amazing with our son, he was afraid to do the zip line so Antonio went with him! Our son had the time of his life and felt far more comfortable with Antonio by his side.

Great massage with incredible atmosphere in nature! The buffet lunch was incredible as well as the complimentary drinks! We enjoyed the mud body masks as we let it dry in the sun and rinse off in the cool river. The hot springs felt great after the river! The coffee was amazing, and everyone was so nice and welcoming! Thank you for a great experience!!

Costa Rica hot springs: things to know before visiting

What part of costa rica has hot springs.

The Arenal region of Costa Rica is the most popular place to experience hot springs. Located in the northern part of the country, Arenal is home to several natural hot springs, as well as some resorts that have their own developed pools.

Costa Rica 10 Day Itinerary : Arenal Volcano Summit without clouds

The second hot spot of the country is the Guanacaste region, especially around the Rincon de La Vieja Volcano and Miravalles Volcano .

How many natural hot springs are there in Costa Rica?

We listed 24 hot springs above, but there are hundreds of hot springs scattered all around Costa Rica. Lot’s of them are natural, and others are human-built. Many resorts have taken advantage of the thermal waters to create an incredible experience around them for visitors.

How many days in Costa Rica for a hot springs complete tour?

10 days in Costa Rica would be great to visit the areas with the most hot springs. As most of the hot springs are located in two or three regions, you could arrive in Liberia, spend 4 days in Guanacaste, 4 days in La Fortuna and 2 days in the south San Jose.

✔️ Check out this complete 10-day itinerary in Costa Rica to plan the perfect road trip. Landing in the capital is great because you can easily get from San Jose to Monteverde , La Fortuna or the Guanacaste region!

What is the best season to visit Costa Rica hot springs?

If you’re looking for the perfect season to plan your trip to Costa Rica, December to May is the driest and best time of the year for outdoor exploration.

It offers a great balance of sunshine and temperatures throughout the country remain comfortable and mild, with daily highs in many areas reaching 80°F (27°C) and more.

When not to visit Costa Rica?

You should avoid Costa Rica during the rainy season, from May to November. Costa Rica is incredibly green because it can rain a LOT during the rainy season.

Costa Rica 10 Day Itinerary : road in La Fortuna with Arenal Volcano in the background

Are hot springs in Costa Rica free?

There are both free and paid hot springs in Costa Rica. Most natural hot springs in Costa Rica are free, but not easy to find.

On the other hand, the resorts that were built around natural hot springs have further enhanced the wonderfully relaxing experience of hot springs. To access those, you will either need to stay in the resort or pay an entrance fee.

What to wear for Costa Rica hot springs?

You can wear your normal swimming suit to visit a natural hot spring in Costa Rica . If it’s a hot spring with mud baths, we recommend wearing a swimming suit that you don’t really care about as it will get dirty.

You should also bring a towel, a bottle of water and dry clothes with you.

⚠️ We don’t recommend taking high value items with you, such as a camera, wallet or phone. No one will be watching your stuff when you are relaxing in the hot spring.

How hot are the hot springs in Costa Rica?

The water temperature varies from one hot spring to another. Most of them range between 75 to 125°F (24 to 51°C). You absolutely shouldn’t bathe in hot springs that exceed 104°F (40°C) as the human body is not prepared for such hot water.

Do hot springs in Costa Rica have healing properties?

Hot springs in Costa Rica have been treasured for their therapeutic and healing properties for centuries.

These volcanic hotspots create natural geothermal water sources, heated by magma below the Earth’s surface, filled with minerals and other nutrients that can be beneficial for your health.

The warm waters of Costa Rican hot springs provide a soothing, relaxation experience that can help ease muscle tension and reduce stress.

The mineral-rich waters have been known to work wonders on the skin, helping to restore its natural balance and leaving it feeling soft, smooth and healthy.

Additionally, some hot springs water is said to contain minerals that are beneficial for various health conditions, such as arthritis and rheumatism.

What are Costa Rica hot springs opening times?

You can access the natural hot springs at any time. However, we recommend going there by day as they are located in the middle of nature. At night, the fauna of Costa Rica wakes up.

It’s extremely rich, with lots of different species of wild animals, such as snakes and spiders. Therefore, you should be careful with adventuring in the middle of a forest at night when you don’t have a guide.

Resorts that offer thermal springs in Costa Rica are usually open until the sun sets, or a little after.

These soothing, warm waters are enriched with minerals, creating a spa-like experience amidst the lush rainforests and picturesque settings. Hot springs in Costa Rica offer a perfect blend of relaxation, rejuvenation, and immersion in nature.

Why Choose a Hot Springs Tour?

While it's possible to visit some hot springs independently, opting for a guided hot springs tour provides several benefits: 1. Safety and Comfort: Hot springs tours ensure your safety and comfort by providing transportation, access to facilities, and knowledgeable guides who can assist you throughout the experience. 2. Local Insights: Experienced guides share insights about the geological formations, history, and cultural significance of the hot springs, enhancing your appreciation of the natural phenomenon. 3. Tips for Your Hot Springs Adventure

Volcano Hike & Hot Springs

Volcano Hike & Hot Springs

Walk Volcanic Trails & Soak in Hot Springs

In truth, this national park has two volcanoes – the 5,357-foot (1,633-meter) Arenal Volcano and the 3,740-foot (1,140-meter) Chato Volcano. The latter has been inactive for nearly 3,500 years and has a collapsed crater that contains a picture-perfect lagoon.

In contrast, Arenal is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, and since July 29, 1968 its lava flows have been consistent. On this day in 1968, three craters burst open along the volcano’s western flank. “Crater A” measured 1,000 meters across and set off a pyroclastic flow of toxic gas and hot rocks that spread 12 km, devastating the towns of Pueblo Nuevo and Tabacón. In doing so, it killed 87 people. In September of the same year, “Crater A” began again to emit lava, and remained the most active crater until 1973.

In 1973, the eruption activity migrated to “Crater C.” This crater remains active to the present day, and is characterized by lava that is of an andesite basaltic composition, with explosions that contain pyroclastic materials and gas emissions. During the days, you can see smoke and cinder blocks billowing from Arenal’s top, while at night you can watch the fiery-red lava pour down its steep sides.

The active vent is along the western side of the volcano. The town of La Fortuna lies within its eastern shadow, meaning that you’ll need to take a trip to the other side to catch a glimpse of the lava. It’s also important to note that on many days clouds obscure the top.

Within the national park, short trails (3.4 km and 2 km) pass through both secondary forest and lava fields from previous eruptions. The park rangers keep a close eye on the volcanic activity, and will not hesitate to close trails or portions of the park if they feel that it is unsafe.

Arenal plays a large role in Costa Rica's power production. Lake Arenal , which rests at the base of the Arenal Volcano, supplies 12 percent of the country's hydroelectric energy. On the opposite side of the lake, wind farms catch strong gales that whip across the Tilarán mountain range, while the Miravalles Volcano Geothermic Plant taps into the area’s volcanic activity for electrical power.

Arenal’s climate is variable. Both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans influence its temperature (which oscillates between 21°C and 27.5°C) and annual rainfall (which averages between 3,500 mm to 5,000 mm). The rainy season lasts from May to January, while the dry season runs from February to April.

What animals are you likely to see while exploring the Arenal Volcano National Park? You might spot deer, tapir, howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys and snakes, or birds like parrots, orioles and brown magpies. Plants include various species of palms and bromeliads (including the endemic specie Pitcaimia Funkiae), guayabo de monte, bait, ceiba, cirri, laurel, higuerones, fungi, orchids, and ferns.

We soak in Costa Rica hot springs more often than we should probably admit

Faq: our answers to your costa rica hot springs questions, general la fortuna hot springs recommendations and tips, la fortuna hot springs photos.

We are hard workers (that goes without saying), but every now and again we like to treat ourselves to dips in local hot springs. Though we’ve done so outside of the La Fortuna region, including in the Rincon de la Vieja, Orosi, and Chirripo vicinities, Costa Rica’s best hot springs cluster around La Fortuna in the Arenal area of the country. Since we lived in La Fortuna, built our business from La Fortuna, and have spent time at all of La Fortuna’s hot spring properties, we are qualified—and happy—to answer your Costa Rica hot springs questions.

To learn more about hot springs in Costa Rica, specifically hot springs in the La Fortuna / Arenal region, see our related blog post: Best Hot Springs In Arenal: We Compare All 12 Hot Springs In La Fortuna

What do you do at the hot springs?

Simply put, you sit in pools filled with thermal water. Each hot springs attraction offers a variety of pools to wade in, each at varying water temperatures, and you’re free to roam from one pool to the next. Some hot springs, including the Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , the Los Laureles Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , the Tabacon Hot Springs , the Termalitas del Arenal Hot Springs , and the Termo Arenal Hot Springs have one or more waterslides to help pass the time. In addition, the Baldi Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , and the Los Laureles Hot Springs offer an aquatic playground to keep children entertained. The Los Laureles Hot Springs has a soccer field, basketball court, and beach volleyball court, the Los Lagos Hot Springs runs an on-site canopy (zip-lining) tour, and the Springs Resort Hot Springs has an on-site adventure center (called the Club Rio Outdoor Center ) where you can participate in on-site adventure tours like horseback riding and river tubing. Beyond the use of these additional (and optional) hot spring activities, the Costa Rica hot springs experience encompasses little else beyond enjoying a relaxing soak.

Do all of the hot springs properties offer the same number of pools?

No, pool quantity varies by hot springs attraction.

Hot springs pool numbers by property: The Baldi Hot Springs: 25 hot spring pools The EcoTermales Hot Springs: 6 hot spring pools The Tabacon Hot Springs: 5 hot spring pools The Springs Resort Hot Springs: 18 hot spring pools The Paradise Hot Springs: 7 hot spring pools + 1 jacuzzi The Titoku Hot Springs: 8 pools The Los Lagos Hot Springs: 10 pools The Kalambu Hot Springs: 5 hot spring pools The Los Laureles Hot Springs: 9 hot spring pools

Do the hot springs have lockers?

Yes. The Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , and the Los Laureles Hot Springs all charge their guests for the use of an on-site locker. If you plan to visit the Los Laureles Hot Springs , you may bring your own padlock for use at the hot springs attraction. The Paradise Hot Springs , the Titoku Hot Springs , and the Tabacon Hot Springs charge their guests a refundable deposit for the use of an on-site locker. The EcoTermales Hot Springs does not charge its guests a fee or a refundable deposit for use of an on-site locker.

Do the hot springs provide towels?

Yes. The Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Tabacon Hot Springs , the Paradise Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , the Titoku Hot Springs , and the Kalambu Hot Springs all charge their guests a refundable deposit for on-site towel use. Alternatively, you can bring your own towel to any hot springs property. The EcoTermales Hot Springs does not charge its guests a fee or a refundable deposit for on-site towel use. The Los Laureles Hot Springs does not offer an on-site towel service; you must bring your own towel if you plan to visit this hot springs attraction.

Are advance reservations for the hot springs recommended?

Most hot springs attractions require advance reservations so they have an idea of how much food and staff they’ll need each day. Smaller properties, such as the Tabacon Hot Springs , the EcoTermales Hot Springs , the Titoku Hot Springs , and the Paradise Hot Springs , enforce maximum capacity limits so advance reservations are recommended, if not required. To secure hot springs pass availability, especially if you plan to travel during Costa Rica’s high, peak, or shoulder seasons (see our related blog post When To Go To Costa Rica According To Cost, Weather, Wildlife, And More for more information about Costa Rica’s travel seasons), advance reservations are strongly recommended.

When are the Costa Rica hot springs open?

Each hot springs property sets its own operating times. Although operating times are subject to change, the following are the most current hours of operation we have on record for the top 12 hot springs properties in the Arenal area.

Hot springs hours of operation by property: The Baldi Hot Springs: 9:00am to 10:00pm Monday through Sunday The EcoTermales Hot Springs: 10:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Sunday The Tabacon Hot Springs: 10:00am to 10:00pm Monday through Sunday The Springs Resort Hot Springs: the regular pools open at 8:00am and close at 11:00pm Monday through Sunday; the Los Perdidos Hot Springs open at 10:00am and close at 10:00pm Monday through Sunday The Paradise Hot Springs: 11:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Sunday The Titoku Hot Springs: 10:00am to 8:00pm Monday through Sunday The Los Lagos Hot Springs: 9:00am to 10:00pm Monday through Sunday The Kalambu Hot Springs: 10:00am to 6:00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 10:00am to 8:00pm on Fridays; 10:00am to 9:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays; closed Mondays and Tuesdays The Los Laureles Hot Springs: 9:00am to 9:00pm Monday through Sunday

Can you bring food onto the hot springs property?

Generally, no. Most Costa Rica hot springs sell their own food and beverages at on-site restaurants, cafes, and/or bars and do not allow visitors to bring their own food onto the property. Exceptions include economy-quality hot springs that cater to locals who use the hot springs as a gathering place for family reunions, group get-togethers, and staff outings, including the Los Laureles Hot Springs , the Termalitas del Arenal Hot Springs , and the Termo Arenal Hot Springs . These properties offer individual picnic-style ranchos (some are equipped with electricity and/or barbecues) where you can prepare and serve your own food purchased off-site. Since the Rio Chollin Hot Springs are merely a public swimming hole comprised of thermal water, you’re welcome to bring your own food to the site.

Can you eat on-site at the hot springs?

Yes. The Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Tabacon Hot Springs , the Paradise Hot Springs , the EcoTermales Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , the Los Laureles Hot Springs , the Termalitas del Arenal Hot Springs , and the Termo Arenal Hot Springs have food and beverages available for purchase on-site at restaurants, cafes, and/or bars. Though the Titoku Hot Springs does not have a restaurant on-site (it only has a bar on-site), its off-site sister property, the resort-quality hotel Arenal Kioro , welcomes hot springs visitors to dine at an on-site restaurant called the Heliconias Restaurant .

Are meals included with Costa Rica hot springs visits?

This answer depends on the hot springs property you choose and the details of the hot springs pass you purchase. Some tour operators, travel agencies, and hotels automatically include a meal with the hot springs packages they sell and others do not in order to make their packages appear less expensive. Hot spring passes for the Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , the Paradise Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , the Titoku Hot Springs, and the EcoTermales Hot Springs may be reserved and purchased with or without the inclusion of a meal. At the Tabacon Hot Springs , a meal is automatically included with each of their hot springs pass options. At the Los Laureles Hot Springs , the Termalitas del Arenal Hot Springs , and the Termo Arenal Hot Springs there is no option to include a meal with the hot springs pass, however, food purchased may be purchased on-site or you’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks onto the grounds.

How do I get to the hot springs?

We created the below map to show where each La Fortuna hot springs attraction is located. Included on the map are the following sites:

  • Baldi Hot Springs (marked by a water icon)
  • EcoTermales Hot Springs (marked by a water icon)

Arenal Hot Springs Map

How long does it take to get to the hot springs?

This answer depends on the hot springs property you choose and where you depart from. Since hot springs properties exist all around the La Fortuna / Arenal area, the drive time could be anywhere from seven minutes to twenty minutes assuming the drive is made from downtown La Fortuna. If you have a specific Costa Rica hot springs property in mind, as well as a specific departure location, post these details as a comment at the bottom of this page and we’ll respond with an approximate driving duration for the route.

Can I drive myself to and from the hot springs?

Yes. All hot springs properties in the Arenal area are accessible by car and have parking on-site, with the exception of the Rio Chollin Hot Springs (limited street parking is your only option). You do not need a 4×4 vehicle to reach any of the hot springs attractions discussed in this post.

What should I bring to the hot springs for my visit?

If you do not plan to wear your bathing suit to the hot springs property you choose to visit, bring it with you while you wear clean and dry clothes to the site. If you wear your bathing suit to the Costa Rica hot springs property, make sure you bring a pair of clean and dry clothes (including undergarments and footwear) with you for use at the end of your visit and/or for use while dining. Many hot springs properties will not allow you to dine in wet clothes, while wearing bathing suit attire, or while wearing flip-flop footwear, so you’ll need to have access to dry clothes and shoes if you plan to eat on-site.

If you plan to visit a hot springs property that charges a fee for towel rentals (or requires a security deposit for towel use that you don’t want to pay), bring your own towel to the hot springs. If you plan to visit a hot springs property during the day, bring a hat and sunscreen for protection while you lounge in the sun. Beyond any other necessities that you may need to bring with you, such as prescription medication, your hotel room key, your wallet, etc., keep your belongings to a minimum. Hot springs lockers are typically small, and having to drag a bulky bag around with you from pool to pool is a pain.

Do all of the hot springs offer the same pool temperatures?

No. Pool temperatures vary across hot springs properties.

Temperature ranges of the hot springs by property: The Baldi Hot Springs: 90 to 152 degrees fahrenheit The EcoTermales Hot Springs: 98 to 105 degrees fahrenheit The Tabacon Hot Springs: 77 to 122 degrees fahrenheit The Springs Resort Hot Springs: 83 to 103 degrees fahrenheit The Paradise Hot Springs: 81 to 104 degrees fahrenheit The Los Laureles Hot Springs: 77 to 113 degrees fahrenheit

I’ve heard there are free hot springs in La Fortuna. Is this true?

Somewhat. A thermal-water river flows near the property of the Tabacon Hot Springs that provides runoff from the resort’s hot springs. This river is what’s known as the Rio Chollin Hot Springs (you may also see the hot springs referenced as Tabaconcito or mini-Tabacon ). Many locals opt to visit this site for their own personal hot springs use. Some foreign travelers, typically backpackers and other individuals on a tight budget, choose to visit the river as well. Though access is free, this hot springs site is unsupervised and not particularly safe. There are no change rooms, lockers, or places to store personal belongings. The river hides under a bridge off the main road that runs between La Fortuna and Lake Arenal (Road 142). There is no lighting in the area after dark. Nighttime visits are not recommended and can be dangerous.

I’ve heard that Tabacon is the only natural hot springs. Is this true?

No. The majority of Costa Rica hot springs are natural in the sense that their water comes from (and is initially heated by) the volcano. Specifically, the Baldi Hot Springs , the Springs Resort Hot Springs , the Paradise Hot Springs , the EcoTermales Hot Springs , the Kalambu Hot Springs , the Los Lagos Hot Springs , the Titoku Hot Springs , the Los Laureles Hot Springs , the Termalitas del Arenal Hot Springs , and the Termo Arenal Hot Springs all pump water from the volcano into their property. For this reason, the hot springs are often referred to as “pools” since the water is pumped up from the ground and contained in pool-like craters you can soak in. In contrast, the Tabacon Hot Springs provides several man-made pools like other hot spring properties do but it also has a free-flowing hot spring river that runs through its property. Some people call the river natural because it flows freely above ground, but each of the other hot springs attractions in the La Fortuna area is also natural with respect to their mineral advantages and geothermal existence.

Is Tabacon ‘s free-flowing river better or worse than the other Costa Rica hot springs pools?

In our opinion, it is neither better nor worse, it is simply different. Regardless of the mechanisms used to fill a pool (i.e., via a free-flowing river or an underground pump), the essence of the hot springs experience—soaking in a warm body of mineral water—is similar across all Costa Rica hot springs attractions. Some people prefer the in-river soaking experience that the Tabacon Hot Springs provides, and others dislike the river’s slippery, sometimes algae-covered bottom. To each their own, we suppose, but regardless of where the hot springs experience is, it’s always relaxing and rewarding.

Do I need to be able to know how to swim in order to visit the Costa Rica hot springs?

Not really, unless you opt to visit the Tabacon Hot Springs or the Rio Chollin Hot Springs whose thermal-water rivers can have strong, fast-moving currents. Being able to swim will likely help you feel more comfortable in and around water, though, and that level of comfort may heighten your overall hot springs experience regardless of which property you choose to visit. Most hot springs in Costa Rica offer pools of a variety of depths, so it’s possible to only soak your feet or wade in pools waist-deep. Though knowing how to swim is not required (so long as you exercise common sense in and around the water ), parents/guardians should keep a close eye on children who do not know how to swim . These children should avoid hot springs features that send people underwater, such as waterslides that dispose riders into pools.

Do I need to be in good physical condition in order to visit the Costa Rica hot springs?

Yes. You do not need to have perfect health, but most Costa Rica hot springs properties warn against soaking in hot springs pools when the following conditions (and possibly others) are present :

Visits to Costa Rica hot springs should be avoided if any of the below conditions are present: Conditions involving high fevers Extreme hypertension Malignant tumors and cancerous conditions Liver, kidney, or circulation disorders Conditions presenting the risk of hemorrhaging Anemic conditions Pregnancy Congestive heart failure, recent stroke, or recent heart attack Bathing under the influence of drugs or alcohol Recent surgeries or procedures that could be affected by sudden slips or falls

If you suffer from any of the above conditions (or other conditions you think may put you at risk), it’s up to you to act responsibly and avoid visiting the hot springs for your own health. Health checks are not conducted by Costa Rica hot springs property staff, and proof of medical clearance is not required when you reserve a hot springs pass or enter a hot springs property. Please, prioritize your health.

Is there a minimum age limit to visit the Costa Rica hot springs?

Generally, no. It is up to parents/guardians to decide whether or not their child(ren) should visit.

Will I see wildlife during my Costa Rica hot springs visit?

Probably not. Though wildlife spotting is unpredictable and can occur at any location at any time, we rarely encounter wildlife during hot springs visits. Sometimes monkeys can be heard in the distance; a gecko, lizard, or an iguana makes an appearance; and birds and butterflies fly by; but beyond these haphazard sightings, Costa Rica hot springs visits are not wildlife-spotting activities.

What happens if it rains the day of my Costa Rica hot springs reservation?

Costa Rica is part rainforest and rain is inevitable. For this reason, the majority of tours and activities—hot springs visits included—run rain or shine. Since visits to hot springs require you to get wet anyway, rain hardly hinders the experience. In the event of extreme weather, such as significant wind or lightning that would make entering the hot springs pools dangerous, most Costa Rica hot springs properties will allow the reservation to be changed to another day if availability and schedules permit.

If you plan to visit a hot springs attraction while in Costa Rica, we recommend knowing the following information first.

The smaller the hot springs property, the faster it fills up.

Smaller properties have capacity limits. These limits can limit availability, especially during the high season. During busy periods, large hot springs properties provide an advantage: additional pool space to spread out in so you don’t feel like you’re sharing the place with other people. On the other hand, during less popular periods, smaller hot springs properties can feel like they provide more intimate settings. Please see our related blog post When To Go To Costa Rica According To Cost, Weather, Wildlife, And More! for an explanation of Costa Rica’s high, low, peak, and shoulder seasons and how these seasons correspond with busy and non-busy times.

If you plan to visit La Fortuna’s hot springs several times, consider staying at a La Fortuna hotel that offers thermal-water pools on-site.

La Fortuna has several accommodations that treat guests to thermal-water pools, including the Arenal Springs Resort, Volcano Lodge, El Silencio Del Campo, Arenal Manoa, Royal Corin, Montana De Fuego, Arenal Paraiso, and Arenal Kokoro. Even if you choose to stay at an accommodation with thermal-water pools on-site, though, we still recommend visiting one of the nicer off-site hot springs attractions for one day or evening in order to obtain the full hot springs experience. For the remainder of your time in La Fortuna, you can relax in the thermal-water pools at your hotel.

To learn more about hotels in La Fortuna, don’t miss our related blog post: La Fortuna Hotels: Where We Stay Around Arenal Costa Rica

When a meal is included in the cost of the hot springs pass, more often than not, the lunch or dinner served is a buffet.

A few hot springs properties also offer a la carte menu options, but in some cases, meals ordered off the menu are charged separately and do not qualify for the meal automatically included with a hot springs pass. Some hot springs properties decide to offer a la carte menu options on a day-to-day basis according to the number of visitors.

Most hot springs in Costa Rica will not allow visitors to eat dinner at their on-site restaurant while wearing bathing suit attire.

Be sure to bring a dry change of clothes with you to wear when you’re ready to dine. Also, you may want to plan your hot spring visits around the hours that the meal is served at the hot springs property to avoid changing out of your bathing suit into dry clothes to eat, then changing back into your bathing suit to continue enjoying the pools.

Do you need to wear special chemical free sunscreen at the mineral springs?

Hi Laura Roberts!

The hot spring properties don’t require visitors to wear a special chemical-free sunscreen, but it’s always a good idea (for your own personal health) to consider chemical-free alternatives. 🙂

Wondering if we can go skinny dipping at Baldi hot springs or Tabacon hot spring? Or maybe other places?

Hi Joe E Kingsley!

Both the Baldi Hot Springs and the Tabacon Hot Springs (as well as all other hot spring properties we’re familiar with in La Fortuna and elsewhere in Costa Rica) require a bathing suit to be worn at all times.

Thank you so much for the article !! It was just what I was looking for. I’m becoming empty nested next month and would like your suggestion to a safe area for a single female (preferably withIn walking distance of outdoor markets) where I could daily walk and enjoy a hot spring and unwind and reflect ( and maybe stay for 90 days at a time ) thx

If you’re interested in the hot springs, you’ll want to stick to the La Fortuna area. (Most other destinations in Costa Rica that have hot springs either don’t have a developed center that you can walk around or else aren’t particularly safe for a solo female traveler.)

If you aren’t limited to a destination with hot springs, though, be sure to check out the Costa Rica Destination Tool that’s available on our sister site, DIY Costa Rica. The tool filters roughly 66 destinations by nearly 150 criteria in less than 1 minute, so you can quickly and easily decide where you should go in Costa Rica according to your unique preferences, wants, and needs.

15 BEST Hot Springs in La Fortuna (and which ones you should visit!)

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

After an adventurous day out in the Arenal/La Fortuna area, there is no better way to unwind than soaking in a relaxing hot spring! Fortunately, you will find plenty of hot spring options just outside of downtown La Fortuna.

There are luxurious hot springs that come with hefty price tags along with budget-friendly ones that won’t leave your wallet empty.

With so many options available, I figured I’d help you out by telling you all about the 15 different hot springs you can visit in La Fortuna. Below, I’ll compare them all including prices, facilities, and location so that you can easily find the right hot springs to visit for your upcoming holiday.

Here’s everything you need to know about the hot springs in La Fortuna.

15 Hot Springs in La Fortuna

1. tabacon hot springs .

The view from above of the Tabacon hot Springs in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

  • Location: 13 km (8 miles) northwest of La Fortuna
  • Price: Day Pass (with lunch or dinner) – $81 USD; Full-Day Pass (with lunch and dinner) – $149 USD
  • Hours: Day Pass and Full-Day Pass – 10 am to 10 pm
  • Best for: Anybody looking for a luxurious hot spring where price isn’t an issue.

Tabacón Hot Springs is one of the favorite hot springs in La Fortuna. It is well-known for its natural hot springs and pools that wind through a luscious garden, giving guests the sense of being in the heart of a jungle.

Within the property, you can find five different springs with mineralized, naturally heated water. The springs feed dozens of pools at temperatures ranging from 72 F to 105 F (22 C to 40 C), so no matter your preference, you will surely find the perfect pool for you.

For that deluxe touch, the main area of the hot springs comes complete with a swim-up bar and a waterslide. Sip on a cool beverage as you soak in the soothing streaming water. Meanwhile, there are secluded pools in the lower section that offer a spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano.

The Tabacon Hot Springs are located within the Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa , one of the most luxurious non-all-inclusive resorts in the Arenal area. While some hotels in La Fortuna only offer their on-site hot springs to guests, the Tabacon Thermal Resort & Spa hosts a day pass program that allows non-hotel guests to enjoy their hot springs. However, if you’re planning on staying in the hotel, access to the hot springs is complimentary.

2. Baldi Hot Springs

Pool area of Baldi Hot Springs Hotel & Spa in La Fortuna

  • Location: 4.7 km (2.9 miles) away from downtown La Fortuna
  • Price: Entrance only – $27 USD for nationals, $44 USD for foreigners; Entrance with lunch or dinner – $49 USD for nationals, $66 USD for foreigners; Entrance with lunch and dinner $71 USD for nationals, $88 USD for foreigners
  • Hours: 9 am to 10 pm
  • Best for: Family-friendly facilities

The Baldi Hot Springs is one of the most developed and visited hot springs in La Fortuna, not to mention the most lively one! Set amidst lush vegetation, this hot springs resort boasts 25 thermal water pools with temperatures ranging from 93°F to 152°F (doesn’t it sound dreamy?!). It also comes complete with a massive jacuzzi for up to 60 guests.

One of the major draws of Baldi Hot Springs is its massive space that lets you unwind in the company of friends and family. The property not only provides you with a spacious therapeutic paradise to relax in, but it also has bustling pool/bar areas and massive water slides that cater to social gatherings. There’s even an interactive kids’ play zone within the property for families with small children, which is super convenient!

With that said, these hot springs are probably not the best choice for anybody looking for a super relaxing and peaceful experience.

I’d say the two things that I really love most about Baldi is that despite its safe location outside the danger zone of the Arenal Volcano, it still offers breathtaking views of the majestic landform. This property is also clearly visible from the main road, thanks to its showy, roofed entry.

The Baldi Hot Springs is part of the Baldi Hot Springs Hotel and Spa , a superior-quality hotel with rooms starting at $276 USD per night. Many consider it to be one of the best hotels in La Fortuna , and if you’re a guest at the hotel you can enjoy the hot springs for free as much as you want.

3. EcoTermales Hot Springs

EcoTermales Hot Springs

  • Location: 5.2 km (3.2 miles) from downtwon La Fortuna
  • Price: Entrance only – $45 USD; Entrance with lunch or dinner – $73 USD
  • Hours: Monday to Thursday from 5 pm to 9:45 pm and Friday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm and 5 pm to 9:45 pm
  • Best for: an intimate and romantic experience

Nestled in La Fortuna’s primary rainforest, EcoTermales Hot Springs is a family-owned and operated natural hot spring. The thermal springs that await you at this property come from hyperthermal magnesia-filled waters. This means that you can indulge in the waters’ muscle-relaxing, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties! Sounds nice, right?

There are six intimate and romantic pools here, the temperatures of which range from 99° F to 106° F. Should you prefer a change in temperature, there is also a freshwater waterfall and pool here, as well as two pools with ordinary water.

Part of what makes EcoTermales Hot Springs appealing is that it offers a quiet getaway where you can escape for a few hours without breaking the bank. Although there are other less expensive hot springs in La Fortuna that provide the same service, the EcoTermales Hot Springs remain a popular destination. This is because the resort allows a maximum of 80 visitors per time slot every day so that everyone has a chance to experience total relaxation.

There are also paved and illuminated pathways through the jungle at EcoTermales, perfect for romantic strolls with your special someone, wildlife observation, and some amazing photo ops!

EcoTermales, unlike the above two La Fortuna hot springs mentioned, is a stand-alone hot spring without an accompanying hotel. However, there is a restaurant and a bar on the grounds, so you can dine here for lunch or supper. It is also just a few minutes away from downtown La Fortuna, putting it in a handy position close to most hotels.

4. Titoku Hot Springs

Titoku Hot Springs

  • Location: 4.8 km (3 miles) west of downtown La Fortuna
  • Price: Entrance only – $15 USD for nationals, $33 USD for foreigners; Entrance with a meal – $40 USD for nationals, $52 USD for foreigners
  • Hours: 10 am to 8 pm
  • Best for: Those looking to avoid crowds.

If you’re looking for a more intimate and genuine hot springs experience in Arenal, then I think you’ll fall in love with Titokú Hot Springs . There are eight jacuzzi-style pools here that cascade down and come with a lower temperature as you get closer to the bottom.

The pools are nestled in beautifully landscaped gardens and are lit with multi-colored ambient lighting at night. A full-service bar is also on hand, so you can enjoy a glass of champagne while relaxing in the pools. For additional convenience, there are dressing rooms, showers, and lockers available for guest use.

Small and intimate, Titokú is frequently overlooked by visitors since it’s surrounded on all sides by larger thermal resorts. But it’s exactly because it’s hidden in plain sight that makes it such an incredible find!

Not to mention the fact that this property has a maximum capacity of 80 guests, with each pool accommodating between six and twenty people. With the fewer guests around, you can expect a really peaceful and uncrowded experience. In fact, you often have an entire pool to yourself, which is one of the delightful perks of visiting these hot springs. It’s no wonder this place is often considered one of the best hot springs in Costa Rica !

Titokú Hot Springs is part of the Arenal Kioro Suites & Spa , a luxury hotel set on 27 acres of lush, verdant countryside. However, since the hot springs are on a separate parcel of land, you feel far away from the hustle and bustle of the resort.

5. Paradise Hot Springs

Paradise Hot Springs in Costa Rica

  • Location: 4.8 km (3 miles) northwest from La Fortuna
  • Price: Basic Day Pass – $38 USD; Day Pass + Meal – $58 USD; Premium Day Pass – $170 USD
  • Hours:  11 am to 9 pm
  • Best for: Hot springs with hydromassage

After a long day of exploring Arenal, a refreshing dip in the outdoor hot spring pools and jacuzzis is just what you need. They feature natural magnesium-rich water that cleanses the skin and promotes relaxation. Similar to the other La Fortuna hot springs, the property’s pools also have varying temperatures, from a steamy 104° F to a cooler 81° F.

But the main selling point of Paradise Hot Springs is the variety of hydromassage (different intensity water jets or waterfalls) featured in each pool. This alleviates stress and muscle soreness in the back, shoulders, neck, and feet. It’s a truly relaxing experience you don’t want to miss!

The Paradise Hot Springs’ tropical aesthetic is also stunning. The pools are tucked away in verdant gardens with Costa Rican coffee trees, exotic palms, and local flowers. At night, they are illuminated with a kaleidoscope of colors for a romantic vibe— trust me it’s just as magical as it sounds!

You can find the Paradise Hot Springs within the Paradise Hot Springs Thermal Water Resort , a 17-room high-end hotel.

6. The Springs Resort Hot Springs

  • Price: Two-Day Pass – $85 USD + 13% VAT; Multi-Adventure Package – $124.20 USD

  • Best for: Luxurious hot springs that’s affordable

If Tabacon is out of your price range, but you still want to experience a huge, luxurious hot spring resort, consider The Springs . This sprawling resort features 28 hot springs and pools, four acres of beautifully landscaped recreational grounds, swim-up bars, and one of the best volcano views in La Fortuna!

Nestled within picturesque patches of rainforest, the hot springs in this property are pretty varied in terms of temperature and environment. You can choose to dip in pools that are as cool as 83° F and as steamy as 104° F. You can also find them in a variety of settings, from rushing waterfalls to quiet woodlands. Isn’t it great to have options?

Three hot springs are found here: La Lagunas, Perdido, and Club Rio. At La Lagunas, you can enjoy eight pools with views of Arenal Volcano and a swim-up bar, while at Perdido, there are seven additional pools and a kiddie slide. But unlike the other two with a man-made atmosphere, Club Rio boasts waterfalls that gaze out over the river canyon, giving it a more natural feel.

The Springs Resort Hot Springs is part of The Springs Resort & Spa . If you’re wondering where to stay in La Fortuna , this definitely isn’t a bad option! On top of its cold-water pools and hot springs, the resort comes complete with luxurious accommodations, on-site restaurants and bars, a full-service spa, and a tour and activity hub.

7. Los Laureles

Los Laureles hot springs in Costa Rica

  • Location: 4 km (2.5 miles) west of La Fortuna town
  • Price: $12 USD
  • Hours: 9 am to 9 pm
  • Best for: Budget-friendly hot springs with camping area

Los Laureles Hot Springs is one of the smallest hot springs in La Fortuna. While it may lack the luxurious facilities found in Tabacon or Baldi, it is still a great place to unwind and experience La Fortuna’s hot springs!

There are a total of seven thermal water pools and two cold-water pools on the property, along with a restaurant and a ranch. The grounds are well-kept and home to a diverse assortment of native tropical plants and flowers.

Yes, the hot springs at Los Laureles are very basic, but they are a must-visit for budget travelers! You can also spend the night here as they have a camping area and cabins available.

You won’t find a restaurant or bar here, so guests can bring their own food and drinks and have a picnic or grill out on the BBQ!

8. Termalitas del Arenal

Termalitas del Arenal hot springs Costa Rica

  • Location:  4.2 km (2.6 miles) west of La Fortuna

Termalitas del Arenal is a family-friendly leisure complex with hot springs surrounded by lush tropical gardens and an awe-inspiring view of the Arenal Volcano. Pools of different sizes and temperatures are provided to suit the needs of swimmers of all ages and levels. You can also find hydromassages in the pool that are either water springs or waterfalls.

In addition to the hot springs, there are other amenities within the premises of Termalitas del Arenal, including cold water pools, a slide, hydromassage beds (I really love these things!), a wet bar, ranches with BBQ grills, and a restaurant.

You are welcome to bring your own food and beverages inside, but take note that no accommodation or camping facilities are available.

9. Los Lagos

hot springs at Hotel Los Lagos

  • Location: 1.6 km (1 mile) from Arenal Natural Ecological Park
  • Price: $17 USD
  • Best for: A variety of hot springs in one place

Los Lagos Hot Springs is a popular La Fortuna hot springs destination for kids and couples alike, thanks in part to the affordability of the hot springs pass. Although it isn’t the cheapest hot springs in La Fortuna, this pass gives you access to a variety of hot and cold pools, as well as free admission to a few wildlife exhibits on-site. It ends up being a pretty good deal!

The pools at Los Lagos are large and fed by crystalline rainforest springs. However, what makes them stand out from the other hot springs in the area is that they are all different from one another. They are framed with handcrafted concrete that looks like natural-looking gray/brown boulders. It’s definitely a sight to see.

Pool areas and pathways between them are decorated with colorful gardens full of plants and flowers, such as heliconia, ferns, and tall grasses. Several of the property’s pools include turquoise mosaic tile flooring, adding to the tropical theme. You can also find fun waterslides on the premises, along with waterfalls and a faux volcano.

The Los Lagos Hot Springs are the in-house hot springs of Hotel Los Lagos , a tropical hotel housing a gourmet restaurant, a wet bar, a seasonal outdoor pool, and a luxurious spa.

  • Hours: –
  • Best for: Relaxing boutique experience at affordable price

The thermal water at The Royal Corin is 100% natural and teeming in mineral salts and ions, including calcium, carbon, and magnesium. Thanks to the waters’ high mineral content, just soaking in the pool replenishes your skin’s moisture and brings back its radiance! (Sign me up!)

Within the property, you will find two natural warm water swimming pools that range in temperature from 93°F to 104°F. There are also four thermal water jacuzzis with hydromassage to give you a more relaxing experience. If you need a break from the heat, you can dip in the cold-water pool or head to the wet bar for a drink.

One of my favorite things about The Royal Corin is that it isn’t as crowded as Tabacon, so you’ll have more time to enjoy yourself and get a better value for your money.

The Royal Corin Thermal is located on the grounds of the 54-room boutique hotel of The Royal Corin . It is recognized for its excellent service, welcoming environment, and romantic atmosphere, integrated into a natural setting that is nestled in the midst of lush rainforest at the foot of the Arenal Volcano.

11. Volcano Lodge and Springs

Volcano Lodge, Hotel, and Thermal Experience

  • Location: Right next to Arenal Natura Ecological Park
  • Price: $113 to $388 USD per night
  • Best for: Luxurious hot springs exclusive to hotel guests

There are plenty of beautiful and therapeutic hot springs in La Fortuna, but the Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience stands out for its exclusivity. If you’re looking for an epic experience at a hot spring, this is where to stay in La Fortuna so you have the chance. Private and far away from the crowds, these springs are accessible only to hotel guests.

Two main springs are located on the premises: one close to the cold-water free-form pool and the other located near the swim-up bar and has its own ambient lighting and music. Both locations are designed with falls, waterways, tropical gardens, and secluded pools with different temperatures for you to relax in.

For a more private experience, consider booking either the Junior Suite or Thermal Superior Room. A private plunge pool with its own waterfall and naturally heated water await you here.

The Volcano Lodge Hot Springs is set within the Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience at the base of the Arenal Volcano. This 64-room hotel combines its rustic yet modern vibe into its luxurious amenities, including hot spring-fed jacuzzis, boutique spa, and on-site bars.

12. Loma Real Hotel and Hot Springs

Loma Real Hotel and Hot Springs Costa Rica

  • Location: 3 km (1.9 miles) from Arenal Natura Ecological Park
  • Price: from $79 USD night
  • Best for: Cheap hot springs exclusive to hotel guests

Loma Real Hotel and Hotsprings is one of the properties in La Fortuna that only offers its hot springs to guests. The hot springs themselves are pretty basic, with a few tropical plants surrounding them. Apart from hanging out in the hot springs, you can also stroll in the garden while admiring the majestic view of the Arenal Volcano in the distance.

A continental or à la carte breakfast is available at the Loma Real Hotel & Hotsprings. When staying here, you’ll have a room with a private bathroom, a flat-screen TV, and a terrace with a garden view.

13. Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs

Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs at sunset

  • Price: $170 to $545 per night
  • Best for: kid-friendly hot springs that are exclusive to hotel guests

The hot springs at Arenal Manoa are exclusive to guests and cater to swimmers of all ages. The property features a large hot spring for adults, a shallower one for kids, and a jacuzzi should you want a more relaxing experience.

Also on-site is a full-service swim-up bar where you can order food, drinks, and cocktails without leaving the water. It goes without saying that you’ll find it very easy to relax here.

Arenal Manoa’s hot springs are therapeutic, as are most of the hot springs in the Arenal region. Research done on the waters at the property has discovered minerals in the waters, such as sulfate and magnesium, that deliver some health benefits to your body.

Naturally, the resident hotel of Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs, the Arenal Manoa & Hot Springs Resort , is worthy of praise, too. It comes complete with a working ranch, rooms with panoramic views of Arenal Volcano, lush gardens, and an on-site restaurant serving an eclectic blend of local and foreign cuisine.

14. Kalambu Hot Springs

The waterslide at Kalambu Hot Springs in La Fortuna

  • Location: 4.8 km (3 miles) west of Parque de la Fortuna
  • Price: Entrance only – $11.20 USD; Entrance + Food – $17.75 USD
  • Hours: Friday to Sunday 9 am to 9 pm
  • Best for: Most unique hot springs experience in La Fortuna

Kalambu Hot Springs is the only one of its kind in La Fortuna as it combines water park fun with hot springs— it’s a thermally heated water park! With massive slides, thermal pools, swim-up bars, and play areas, the facility has something in store for everyone!

Within walking distance of the changing rooms is an interactive playground designed especially for children. It’s basically a pool of geothermal water with several water cannons, slides, and platforms of varying heights.

Nearby, you can find a five-story tower with three slides (Cyclone, Tornado, and Avalanche) that go directly into the pool. Opposite the tower is the so-called Mammoth, a four-story 370-foot-long (113 m) water slide.

After all that action, you can unwind in one of two thermal pools in the property, both of which come with a swim-up bar. One is for families, while the other is solely for adults.

These thermal pools are located on the sides of the park’s restaurant, which serves Mexican and Costa Rican cuisines, salads, and grilled selections. There is also a snack bar, where you can get typical theme park food, along with frozen drinks, fresh fruit juices, and even Costa Rican beer.

15. FREE hot springs

Free hot springs La Fortuna

  • Location: 12.1 km (7.5 miles) west of La Fortuna
  • Price: FREE
  • Hours: Always open
  • Best for: Free wild hot springs in La Fortuna.

Want to visit hot springs in La Fortuna without spending a thing? Well then, it’s time to skip all of the above hot springs and head straight to the wild hot springs! Just outside of La Fortuna town you’ll find a river where the water is hot. It is completely free to visit and one of the best free things to do in La Fortuna .

The hot springs location can be found on Google Maps (It’s called El Choyin) and if you have your own car you can easily drive there. With that said, there are guys who will charge you for parking (on the street) to keep your car “safe.” I’m not totally sure it is necessary for safety, but you should pay them as it is their job and they will help you park. They will try to charge you around 3,000 Colones ($5.60 USD), however, if you tell them you know that the price is 1,000 Colones ($1.87 USD) they will accept it.

After parking, they will direct you towards the river, under a bridge. Here you can explore the river and find your own place to relax. If you want, bring a beer or some snacks. It really is beautiful and the water is super hot!

One thing that is important to know is that some petty theft has been known to happen here. Keep your valuables with you at all times, or just don’t bring them to the river at all.

If you don’t have a car, you can try and hitchhike there or take a taxi from town.

Other Things to do While You’re in La Fortuna

Arenal volcano in Costa Rica

Of course, exploring the hot springs in La Fortuna is one of the best experiences, but there are so many other things to do in La Fortuna you won’t want to miss! These are just a few of our top picks:

  • Visit La Fortuna Waterfall –  One of the things Costa Rica is famous for is its waterfalls . Top among them has to be the stunning La Fortuna Waterfall . The water shoots out of a tall cliff into the pool below surrounded by lush forest. You can swim in the natural pool here and see wildlife! Entrance is $18 USD and you can buy a skip-the-line ticket online or join one of the La Fortuna Waterfall tours .
  • Hanging bridges – The views of La Fortuna are even better among the treetops! The Mistico Hanging Bridges are some of the best to explore. There are 14 total bridges here with 6 of them being hanging bridges. It’s a fantastic place to spot wildlife especially if you join this guided tour !
  • Arenal Volcano – Arenal Volcano is the centerpiece of La Fortuna! You can wander the trails at Arenal Volcano National Park on your own or as part of a hiking tour . For more unique volcano views, take to the sky aboard the Sky Tram , fly by on an ATV ride , or take a leisurely sunset cruise on Lake Arenal .
  • Drink great coffee – It’s no secret some of the best coffee in the world comes from Costa Rica! You can grab a cup of coffee at one of the restaurants in La Fortuna or take it a step further with a coffee tour . We had the freshest cup of coffee and tasted amazing homemade chocolate on this Costa Rican coffee and chocolate experience that takes place on a small family-owned plantation.
  • Take a cooking class – The food is one of my favorite things about Costa Rica! The next best thing to eating locally-made Costa Rican food is learning to make it yourself. This 3-course cooking class is not only a super fun experience, but lets you get into the culture too!

Where to Stay in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Bailey in a spa at Casa Luna Hotel, La Fortuna

Because La Fortuna is such a big tourist town, there are a ton of amazing places to stay. Here are our top recommendations for every budget.

Selina La Fortuna – $

One of the go-to budget options is Selina La Fortuna . I’ve stayed in Selina hostels around the world and this is a great one. It has a fun party atmosphere and a great co-working space where we spent a lot of time.

Selina Fortuna is located right in the middle of town, so you have easy access to great bars and restaurants nearby. Rates begin at $26 USD for a one-night stay in a dorm and $124 USD for a one-night stay in a private room. You can check availability and book on Booking.com , Hostelworld.com , Hotels.com , or  Expedia .

Casa Luna Hotel & Spa – $$

Those with a medium budget should check out  Casa Luna Hotel & Spa . I stayed here on my first visit to La Fortuna and loved it. The property is beautiful, with a large pool and four hot tubs surrounded by nature. You can also enjoy the tropical botanic garden at the hotel.

Casa Luna Hotel & Spa is near Arenal Volcano National Park, and all the rooms have views of the volcano and the rainforest. The hotel also includes a delicious breakfast in the $204 USD room rate. Casa Luna is located a short drive from town and you can reserve a room online on Booking.com here , Hotels.com here , or Expedia here .

The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal – $$$

For arguably the most luxurious hotel in La Fortuna, check out  The Springs Resort & Spa at Arenal . While the rooms don’t come cheap ($600 USD+), it’s a bucket list place to stay that’s perfect for visiting Costa Rica on a honeymoon !

You’ll find 28 hot spring pools here, making the resort the perfect place if you really want to relax. There’s also a resort-style pool, a fitness center, a swim-up bar, hot tubs, and a spa and wellness center. Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

Top 10 Hot Springs Costa Rica

H ot springs in Costa Rica? Yes, please! There is nothing better after a long hike than hot thermal waters to relax the muscles. And Costa Rica with its many active volcanoes and countless springs has some of that healthy and delicious heat to offer.

Here, you can hang out with hummingbirds within the lush tropical vegetation and watch lizards taking a little steam bath just next to the pools while healing your heart and body in the hot mineral water.

What Are Costa Rica Hot Springs?

Hot springs are produced by the emergence of geothermally heated groundwater that rises from the Earth’s crust and are found in areas with volcanic activity. If we consider that Costa Rica and Panama have emerged fairly recently by a volcanic mountain chain rising out of the sea, it is not surprising that the country hosts an abundance of thermal resorts.

The rich content of minerals in the water helps our body with circulation, which can lower blood pressure and the hot water relaxes the muscles. Costa Rica’s hot springs are the perfect pit stops for some relaxation between expeditions exploring the country.

Hot Springs Costa Rica – Location

Hot springs in Costa Rica are found mostly in the northern part. The most famous ones are located around the Arenal volcano, which is highly active and until recently provided a spectacle for visitors by spitting hot glowing lava every night.

This area, known as La Fortuna , provides an abundance of hot springs nestled in the beautiful lush greenness of the area. The other hot springs in Costa Rica, closer to the beaches and located around the beautiful Rincón de la Vieja national park on the Rio Negro in Guanacaste host other attractions such as hanging bridges and ziplining .

Most Popular Hot Springs In Costa Rica

In the hot springs around La Fortuna , beautiful spring resorts offer pleasant access to the mineral-rich waters. Here, you can combine hiking in the beautiful national park around the Arenal volcano with a relaxing visit to the thermal waters.

The grand spa Tabacon on the river carrying the same name has natural hot springs and is definitely on the more luxurious side. The resort also offers other relaxing features such as massages and the gardens are filled with beautiful tropical flowers and very well tended to.

Not far from Tabacon are the Eco Termales hot springs, located on a privately owned and family-operated property; it is one of the few in the area that is not part of a larger resort. Only a limited number of guests are admitted to the springs, so those who visit here can expect a more peaceful and romantic atmosphere.

One of our favorites is the Kalambu Hot Springs with their stunning volcano views, lush grounds full of flowers, water slides, and great restaurant, and more than anything kids friendly, which for us means that there are a variety of shallow pools and also ones with lower temperatures.

Baldi Hot Springs offers day passes to its more than 25 natural spring-fed pools that vary in temperature, size, and shape. Thus guests have a lot of choice when picking that perfect hot spring spot for a dip in nature. The Baldi hot springs have a kids’ area and offer fun for the whole family.

Another kids’ favorite is the Volcano Lodge and Springs , a beautiful moderately priced hotel that offers good breakfast, amazing views, and hiking trails along with family-friendly pools. Relaxing while your kids are having fun… what’s not to like?

Around La Fortuna, you can also find free hot springs, notably on the Tabacon River. Just next to the resort, cross a little bridge, and then turn left upon a trail leading along the river. You will soon see people relaxing in the natural pools. The best (and hottest) spots are further up!

Those who want to stay closer to the beach can visit hot springs in the Guanacaste area, located around the stunning Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

The Rio Perdido, meaning “lost river”, is the centerpiece of the 600-acre private reserve which allows you to enjoy adventures such as ziplining and mountain biking as well as wellness all in an exclusive setting. This tastefully designed property with comfortable housing is definitely high-end, but exquisite in every way.

Hacienda Guachepelin is a good place for families, even though not many kids were there when we visited. You can do tubing on the river here and go on little adventures. The design of the whole place is also more traditional, so you can get a little campo feel.

The Vandara park offers not only hot springs but also zip lining and mud baths. It is a great place to relax while being immersed in Costa Rica’s beautiful nature and have many activities close by.

If you are looking for a wilder experience, you can go to the free natural hot springs on the road to the Rio Celeste waterfall. This magical blue river is worth a visit in any case and fun exploring with kids! Don’t miss the largest tree in Costa Rica – complete with tens of blue jeans frogs!

You can find hot springs that are more developed in the Thermomania resort and spa. Here, you can enjoy facilities such as a bar and restaurant, camping and cabanas and even get a massage. This place is especially nice with kids and they offer excursions such as a tour to the Miravalles volcano, a zip-lining, canopy, and horse tour as well as a visit of the local wind and geothermal power facilities.

Are hot springs in Costa Rica safe?

If you go to private hot springs where you pay an entrance fee, it will be safe. If you go to free wild ones, you should avoid bringing valuables or have someone watch your things while you’re in the water.

How hot are the hot springs in Costa Rica?

Different pools will have varying temperatures, they range between 77-122 Fahrenheit.

Can Hot Springs be dangerous?

Hot springs can be dangerous if they are excessively hot. None of the commonly visited ones fall under that category and hot springs in Costa Rica are not dangerous.

How far are hot springs from the beach in Costa Rica?

The closest hot springs to the beach are the ones in Guanacaste. From there, you can be on the beach in Playa Hermosa in roughly an hour.
