How to Get a UK Tourist Visa from UAE

The application process for a UK tourist visa mainly involves an online application form and an appointment at a visa application centre. First, you have to choose from the pool of different types of UK visas and determine the kind of visa that suits your requirement as a tourist from UAE. The following step-by-step guidelines shall help you navigate the process of getting a UK tourist visa from start to end.

1. Determine Your Required Visa Type

Different types of uk visas.

There are numerous types of UK visas depending on your nationality, purpose of visit, duration of stay, and personal circumstances and skills. There are standard visitor visas, work visas, student visas, marriage visitor visas, family visas, ancestry visas etc. However, there are three possible visa options for a tourist to consider and determine the suitable one.

– Visa Not Required

The first thing to determine is whether you need a visa to enter the UK. Depending on your nationality, as per your passport, you might not require a visa at all. For example, if you are a Canadian national residing in the UAE, you are exempted from the visa requirement to travel to the UK for a stay shorter than 6 months. Similarly, citizens of the USA, EU member states, and certain commonwealth countries do not need a visa to stay in the UK for no longer than 6 months.

You can check whether you require a visa to enter the UK here .

– Electronic Visa Waiver

Instead of a Standard Visitor Visa, nationals of some middle-eastern countries, including the UAE, have the option to enter the UK with an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) . The UK Electronic Visa Waiver, a digital alternative to regular visitor visas, can be availed by the nationals of the following countries if their stay is no longer than six months for tourism, business, study, or medical treatment:

  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

If you are a national of one of the six countries mentioned above and residing in UAE, the easiest option is to go for an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW).

– Standard Visitor Visa

Suppose you belong neither to any nationalities exempted from the UK visa requirement nor to the nationalities that can avail of an Electronic Visa Waiver. In that case, you must get a Standard Visitor Visa to travel to the UK as a tourist. Those eligible for an Electronic Visa Waiver can also get a UK Standard Visitor Visa. You can usually stay up to 6 months in the UK with a standard visitor visa. However, in certain circumstances like academics and medical treatment, you might be permitted to stay longer than six months.

To get a UK Standard Visitor Visa, you must apply online and attend an appointment at a visa application centre before you travel to the UK. Suppose you plan to visit the UK as a tourist regularly. In that case, you may opt for the long-term standard visitor visa, which will help you avoid the visa application process each time you travel, although the maximum stay per visit would remain 6 months.

The earliest you can apply for a visitor visa is three months before your journey. You should begin your visa application process as soon as possible to relax and prepare for your travel comfortably.

Visiting the United Kingdom from the United Arab Emirates

The United Kingdom is one of the most popular destinations for citizens of the UAE, with around 40,000 Emiratis visiting the country every year.

There are many reasons why residents of the UAE choose to visit the UK. With over 5000 UK companies operating in the UAE, business visits from the capital city of Dubai are common.

If you want to visit the United Kingdom from Dubai then you will need either a UK Visitor Visa or an Electronic Visa Waiver.

Electronic Visa Waiver for Dubai residents

Citizens of the UAE may also be eligible for an Electronic Visa Waiver (EVW) instead of a visit visa. The EVW also allows you to visit the United Kingdom for up to 6 months for tourism, business, medical treatment or even to study.

You can apply for the EVW up to 3 months before you intend to travel to the United Kingdom, but the latest that you can apply is 48 hours before you are due to travel.

The process to apply for an EVW is fairly simple, you must fill in the application form on the gov.uk website and will need the following:

  • your current passport
  • an address in the United Kingdom where you will stay
  • details of your journey, including departure and arrival dates and times

You should then receive an email within 24 hours with your EVW, you must show this when you travel either by printing it or showing it on an electronic device such as a phone.

It’s important to note that you can not use an EVW to work or to get married in the United Kingdom and that it will only allow you to enter the United Kingdom once. If your travel plans change, you must update this on your EVW.

UK Standard Visitor Visa

The UK Standard Visitor Visa  is a type of tourist visa that allows non-EEA nationals to visit the United Kingdom for a number of purposes. This visa can be used for visiting friends and family in the UK, for leisure purposes, to access private medical treatment or to attend business meetings.

The UK Standard Visitor Visa is usually valid for 6 months from the date of travel. To be eligible you must be able to meet a few requirements, including:

  • proving that you can support yourself financially whilst in the United Kingdom
  • proving that you will leave the United Kingdom at the end of your visit and that you won’t live in the United Kingdom for an extended period through successive visits
  • showing proof of any business or other activities that you plan to do whilst in the United Kingdom

Standard Visitor Visa application process

You must apply for the UK Visit Visa online before you leave Dubai. The application form is available on the gov.uk website. You can make your visa application up to three months before you intend to travel to the United Kingdom.

After completing the online application, you need to book an appointment at a visa application centre near you to prove your identity. There are two visa application centres located in the UAE, one in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. During your appointment you will have your biometric information taken, this is your photo and fingerprints.

Once you have completed your online application and attended your appointment, the processing time is usually 3 week. There are Super Priority and Priority visa services available for those who need to travel urgently.

Required documents

When making your visa application you will need to provide a valid passport or travel document. Your passport will need a blank page for the visa and must also be valid for the duration of your stay. As well as this, you will have to supply several other supporting documents to prove that you are eligible for the visit visa. The documents that you will need may vary but they will need to provide the following information:

  • the dates you’re planning to travel to the United Kingdom
  • details of where you’ll be staying during your visit
  • how much you think your trip will cost
  • your current home address and how long you’ve lived there
  • your parents’ names and dates of birth
  • how much you earn in a year
  • details of any criminal, civil or immigration offences you may have committed

You will need to have any documents that aren’t in English translated before you submit them.

Using the Visitor Visa for business activities

You can use the Standard Visitor Visa for a number of business reasons whilst you are in the country. This includes attending meetings, conferences, trade fairs or even to negotiate contracts. You can also partake in certain business activities, including proving training and sharing knowledge on internal contracts.

However, because you will be subject to the visitor rules, you cannot use the standard visit visa for all business activities. This visa does not allow you to do paid work with a UK company or as a self-employed person. You may be able to do paid work by applying for the Permitted Paid Engagement Visa.

Visitor Visa for paid business engagements

The Permitted Paid Engagement Visa  is for those who have been invited to Britain as an expert in their profession. To be eligible for this visa, Dubai residents must be invited by a UK-based organisation or client.

The Permitted Paid Engagement Visa is valid for up to 1 month. This visa allows you to partake in paid work, however, you cannot undertake paid work that is not related to your main job or area of expertise.

The application process for the Permitted Paid Engagement Visa is very similar to the Standard UK Visitor Visa. You must fill in the online application form before booking an appointment at one of the visa application centres in the UAE, located in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What covid-19 restrictions are in place for visiting the uk from dubai.

Currently, visitors arriving into England from Dubai are not permitted entry unless they have residency rights in the UK. Those with residency rights include:

  • British citizens
  • Holders of Indefinite Leave to Remain
  • Those with existing leave to enter or remain
  • Those with entry clearance or a visa that gives them leave to remain

More information about booking your quarantine can be found  here.

How much does it cost to apply for the UK Visitor Visa from Dubai?

The visa fees for a UK visitor visa vary depending on why you’re coming to the UK and how long you’ll be here. Normally the visitor visa lasts 6 months and it costs £95 to apply.

However, there are some circumstances where you will be able to stay for longer. If you’re travelling to the country for medical treatment then you can stay for up to 11 months and your visa fee will be £190. If you’re an academic, you may be able to stay for up to 12 months and your visa fee will be £190.

As well as these fees, you should also consider other costs that you may incur. These include paying for any document translations and paying to have your biometric information taken.

Can I extend my Visitor Visa?

You cannot switch from a visitor visa to another type of UK Visa, however, you may be able to extend your visitor visa in specific circumstances, for example requiring further medical treatment.

If you plan on visiting the UK from Dubai regularly, then you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor Visa. This will give you multiple entries into the UK and can be valid for either 2, 5 or 10 years. However, you can still only remain in the country for 6 months during each visit.

Paid parking in Dubai: Residents face up to Dh4,000 extra yearly costs when new rates kick in

The visa processing time for UAE residents travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) has been substantially reduced which has resulted in increased passenger traffic to the European country.

UAE residents were experiencing visa delays in 2022 due to multiple factors including, a significantly higher demand for travel and a passenger cap levied by the London Heathrow airport.

During the summer of last year, many residents cancelled their travel plans to the UK as the visitor visa processing time had exceeded seven weeks. London is one of the most popular destinations as thousands of UAE residents fly to the city for short and long holidays as well as summer breaks. Last year, London Heathrow airport’s decision to cap departing passengers at 100,000 per day also impacted flights.

“The processing time for UK visas has reverted to the 15 working days standard, and the turnaround time for Priority and Super Priority visas have likewise normalised,” VFS Global said in a statement to Khaleej Times.

Atish Thapa, head of marketing and business development, Cleartrip, said travel to the UK has become easier than it used to be as Covid-19 restrictions have been removed, capacity has been increased by airlines, airfares have gone down and getting a visa is also much faster.

  • Revealed: 6 reasons why Dubai is one of world's top wedding destinations
  • UAE travel: 12 new flights announced for residents this year

“Emirates and British Airways have increased capacity so the airfares have gone down from the peak level seen last year. UK immigration is giving visas faster and businessmen can even get visas in 48 hours at times, depending on the requirement. Hence, there is a sizeable increase in travel and traffic to Europe, specifically the UK,” added Thapa.

The Dubai-based carrier has announced it will resume its second daily service to London Stansted in May 2023, boosting its London operations to 11 daily flights, including six times daily to London Heathrow and three times daily to Gatwick. It will also scale up its A380 operations with the iconic double-decker returning to Birmingham on July 1, 2023.

Mir Wasim Raja, manager of MICE & Holidays at Galadari International Travel Services, also confirmed that visas are being processed faster now, taking approximately 15 days to a month for the residents.

“Visas are being processed and approved faster as compared to last year. Therefore, we are getting a good number of queries and bookings for travel to the UK. A good number of families are also booking now to travel to the Eid Al Fitr holidays in April,” he said.

UK Visit Visa

For UAE residents the UK Immigration offers various visa options depending on the purpose of your visit – whether it is for tourism or business.

For First-Time Applicants:

If you are applying for a UK visa for the first time, the British embassy will typically grant you a 6-month multiple entry visa as a minimum. This allows you to enter the UK multiple times within a 6-month period.

After Your First UK Visit:

After your initial 6-month visa, you may be eligible for longer visa durations based on your travel history and purpose of visit. The available options are:

  • 2-Year Visa: Valid for multiple entries to the UK over 2 years.
  • 5-Year Visa: Allows multiple entries to the UK for up to 5 years.
  • 10-Year Visa: Grants you multiple entries to the UK for a maximum of 10 years.

The duration of the visa issued to you will be based on factors such as your travel records, financial status, and the embassy’s assessment of your application. Frequent travelers with a clean travel history are more likely to be granted longer visa durations.

Once you have sent all the documents to us, we will prepare your application and schedule an appointment at the VFS .

On the day of your appointment, you will visit VFS with your original passport with UK Visa Checklist and Appointment confirmation. You have the option to keep your passport with you by paying an extra fee of AED 375 .
