Educational tourism is under-researched in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to argue that this stems from a lack of consensus regarding the nature and scope of educational tourism as a theoretical concept and market segment.

Design/methodology/approach

Through a review of research over the last decade and a half, the paper aims at providing a concise overview of the key perspectives and concepts in educational tourism whilst highlighting the potential for future directions of the sector.

Ritchie’s (2003) segmentation model of educational tourism is usually considered the international standard for writing on the subject. However, it excludes certain sectors of tourism that may be considered educational. In response to this, a new conceptual model is presented. Further research is needed to understand the schools’ educational tourism market. When international educational tourism is considered, the majority of empirical research and academic debate has originated in the closely related field of international education. Educational tourism has the potential for hybridisation with other segments of tourism and non-tourism sectors and to contribute towards global peace.

Originality/value

This paper offers an alternative process-driven and outcomes-based conceptual model of educational tourism. It identifies directions for future research in schools’ and international educational tourism and proposes a typology to aid hybridisation of the phenomenon with other sectors. Finally, it discusses the potential of educational tourism to foster peace through the integration of global learning into touristic practice.

Educational tourism - the case of Eastern European students: driving forces, consequences, and effects on the tourism industry

This article was written in order to give an insight into the subject of the educational tourism. The main focus was set on the case of the Eastern European foreign students (educational tourists). The research conducted during June-August 2014 was taken as a basis for writing the present article. Identification and examination of the motives and reasons of foreign students to participate in different educational programmes and to continue their studying abroad, and determination of consequences of such decision were determined as final goals of the executed study. Interviews were chosen for data collection as one of qualitative research methods, and further coding, categorization, and grounded theory approach were applied for data analysis. Stereotypes, seek of challenges, and personal reasons were defined as common motivational forces for the educational tourists. A wide range of benefits for both participants and destination countries were explored and relevant conclusions and recommendations were suggested.

This study examines the motivations and experiences of students who study abroad and if study abroad as a whole can be considered to be a form of tourism. The sample for this study is composed of a group of students from the University of Texas at Arlington who had studied abroad or who currently are studying abroad at UT Arlington. The results revealed that international students studying in UT Arlington do not perceive their study abroad experience as tourism but students from UT Arlington abroad in Europe and Asia fully or partially perceive their study abroad experience as a touristic experience. The factors affecting these perceptions include motivations, timeframe abroad and amount of traveling and touristic activities they took part in.

Constructing Central Europe Tourism Competitivenss

New types of tourism are emerging and gaining importance in these days and destinations should adapt to these new demand elements. Educational tourism is one of these new forms of tourism and could be a revitalizing factor for destinations where other economic activities do not develop properly. It is especially the case in Eastern Hungary, where manufacturing activities were rather declining after the transition. According to our empirical findings, non-local students of the tertiary education are spending much more than the traditional tourists arriving to the region. Foreign students are spending much more, so our conclusion is that attracting foreign students could be an important factor for the relatively underdeveloped regions of Hungary, where higher educational traditions are present. Naturally it is rather difficult to attract foreign students, it might need curriculum development at the universities and services development in the towns.

RESUMEN: Este estudio explora las prácticas mediáticas de usuarios de Internet peruanos según el nivel educativo autopercibido. La finalidad es aportar una mirada teórica original sobre la conformación de ensambles mediáticos, configurados a partir de los usos e interacciones de determinados grupos sociales con los medios de comunicación. A partir de un cuestionario ad-hoc, basado en una actualización de la Teoría de Usos y Gratificaciones, aplicado a una muestra (n=465) de usuarios de distintos grupos etarios y niveles socioeconómicos, exploramos las semejanzas y diferencias en estos ensambles mediáticos y el impacto en su agencia como usuarios críticos de medios. Los resultados revelan que el contexto nacional, marcado por brechas tecnológicas y la pandemia de COVID-19, ha influido en las prácticas de consumo. El smartphone destaca como el dispositivo más utilizado, valorado por su inmediatez y diversidad de contenidos. Tanto los grupos poco educados como los muy educados recurren a él para informarse, educarse y entretenerse. La televisión también juega un papel importante, siendo el medio de entretenimiento para las generaciones mayores y una fuente de información para los niveles socioeconómicos más altos. La elección de servicios de streaming en grupos de alto poder adquisitivo refleja la influencia de la conectividad y el ancho de banda. El consumo de información está motivado por la curiosidad, mientras que se apela al entretenimiento para aprender y seguir tendencias. Se observa, además, poca planificación en el consumo de entretenimiento e información, aunque los contenidos educativos son más planificados en el grupo muy educado. Esta diferencia puede estar relacionada con las oportunidades de acceso a contenidos de formación, lo que sugiere rutas para futuras investigaciones. Las ferias del libro globales se erigen en la actualidad como un espacio a medio camino entre el carnaval literario, la fiesta de la cultura de masa, y la prescripción del gusto de la cultura hegemónica. Sin embargo, la crítica ha dejado de lado el estudio de las programaciones culturales de las ferias como textos significantes de una cadena de valores, simbólicos, económicos y sociales, que legitiman a determinados escritores nacionales e internacionales, a través de la espectacularización de su imagen; toda vez que no se aplica un enfoque de género. El objetivo de este trabajo, por tanto, es hacer un close reading de los programas de un estudio de caso, la FIL de Guadalajara entre 2016 y 2020, atendiendo a la presencia de mujeres escritoras y a la de temáticas feministas.
