Not Your Grandpa’s Cigars – Drew Estate Factory Tour, Estelí, Nicaragua

Forget what you think you know about cigars. Drew Estate is redefining the art of cigar making and marketing, as we found out when we traveled to the town of Estelí and took the hippest cigar factory tour in Nicaragua.

Mural Drew Estate Cigar Co. - Esteli, Nicaragua

This 50 foot (15 meter) tall mural is just one of the many pieces of cool original art at the Drew Estate Cigar Co. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

The rebirth of cigars

That’s the slogan of Drew Estate  and the personal goal of its co-founder Johnathan Drew, a 43-year-old guy from New York City who was selling cigars in a tiny kiosk in the World Trade Center in downtown Manhattan while dreaming of bigger things. Using cool art, irreverent names, inventive, modern cigars, and high quality they’re aiming for a new breed of cigar aficionados. In 1998 Johnathan and his partners started Drew Estate Cigar Co. and began making some of the most unorthodox and successful cigars in the world from a massive factory in Estelí.

Blunts Mural Drew Estate Cigars - Esteli, Nicaragua

Cigars in the making at Drew Estate Cigar Co. in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Estelí is well known as a cigar producing region and there are many other cigar factories in town. As in other tobacco and cigar producing regions, Cubans brought tobacco seeds and know how to Nicaragua and the rest is history.

Inside the coolest cigar factory in Nicaragua

We’ve toured cigar factories before, including the Plasencia cigar factory  and the Flor de Copán cigar factory , both in Honduras. That’s how we know Drew Estate is really doing something different. While the other cigar factories in Estelí and around the world are busy doing things the old-fashioned way, Drew Estate took a left turn at traditional and decided to go their own way.

Drew Estate Cigar Factory - Esteli, Nicaragua

One of the young workers at the Drew Estate Cigar Co. factory in Estelí, Nicaragua with a tray of finished cigars.

Rock music plays in the massive warehouse and factory facility. The staff is remarkably young. There’s cool art everywhere, a modern riff on traditional cigar box art inspired by tattoos and graffiti.

We spent hours gawking at the range of cigars (they even make square ones), learning about tobacco curing and cigar rolling, and probably getting some sort of nicotine contact high in the process.

Drew-Estate-cigars-tobacco-storage

Part of our tour of the Drew Estate Cigar Co. facility in Estelí, Nicaragua included a peak into their massive tobacco warehouse where the best leaves from around the world are carefully stored before being turned into millions of cigars.

It’s not just the music and the art work that makes Drew Estate different. We learned that at Drew Estate they don’t call their cigars puros, as many other regional makers do, since they aren’t made with tobacco from a single source. Instead, Drew Estate blends tobacco from around the world, sort of like how a winemaker would blend grapes from different regions to come up with the desired flavor and aroma.

Also, unlike most other cigar makers, Drew Estate doesn’t rely on a machine to measure the “draw” of each cigar. That’s checked primarily by weight.

The only area we weren’t allowed to see during the Drew Estate factory tour was the on-site graphic art studio, called the Subculture Studio, where staff artists were busy cooking up new top secret marketing materials.

Taking the cigar world by storm

Though there were some lean years, today Drew Estate makes millions of dollars and millions of cigars with names like My Uzi Weighs a Ton (an uzi is an official measurement in the world of cigars). And then there’s Acid.

Named for the artist Scott “Acid” Chester (that’s him on the motorcycle in the Acid logo) this is one of Drew Estate’s top sellers. Cigar purists call Acid a “flavored” cigar but Drew prefers the term “infused” since the tobacco used in Acid cigars is steeped in a secret blend of flavors.

Drew Estate’s Liga cigar is not flavored or infused and even the purists love it. It was scored as high as 89 points by  Cigar Aficionado magazine.

The unique art of Drew Estate Cigar Co. is created by in-house artists who put a modern twist on traditional cigar box motifs.

Want to really get into the cool, cool world of Drew Estate cigars? Sign up for their four-day Cigar Safari guided tour of parts of Nicaragua and, of course, the factory which includes accommodation in the very hip and plush house next to the factory. There’s a swimming pool, decks with epic views, a poker table, full staff and, of course, all the cigars you can smoke. Just don’t hold your breath: the Drew Estate Cigar Safari is already sold out for 2014.

Estelí travel tip

Estelí doesn’t see a lot of tourists and hotel options in town are a bit slim. We were hard pressed to find decent budget accommodation with parking. There’s a budget hostel but they don’t have parking, there’s an over-priced seen-better-days hotel with a parking lot that just felt like a rip off and then there’s Hotel Los Arcos . Rooms start at US$45 but they’re big, clean and include breakfast and there’s a secure parking lot.

That sounds like an awesome experience. Square cigars make for a good conversation starter lol. I’ve never been a fan of cigars but I love seeing how they are made. We’ll have to visit a factory while in the Dominican Republic.

If you are a cigar smoker, it’s just right to know how it is made and where it came from. This tour is to make people realize that there is an art in cigar smoking and why there are still a lot of people all over the world appreciate it.

Drew Estate Tour Offers Rare Velvet Rat Cigar

Drew Estate Tour Offers Rare Velvet Rat Cigar

Drew Estate is going on tour across the United States, and eventgoers will be the only ones who have a chance to get their hands on one of the Nicaraguan cigar company's most coveted smokes: the Liga Privada Único Serie Velvet Rat.

Called the Drew Diplomat Event Series, the tour kicks off at 5 p.m. tonight at The Beer Sellar in Newport, Kentucky, and will continue into the summer, with scheduled stops at more than 50 Drew Diplomat Retailers throughout the U.S. The tour will culminate at Drew Estate's second annual Connecticut River Valley Barn Smoker on August 6, held in South Windsor at the same farm that produces wrapper for the company's Liga Privada No. 9 and Liga Privada T52 cigars.

Event attendees will not only have the opportunity to smoke a cigar among other enthusiasts and take advantage of specials on Drew Estate products, but they may also be able to meet co-founder Jonathan Drew as well as master blender Willy Herrera.

Perhaps most importantly, fans will be able to get the limited Velvet Rat cigar. Part of the company's highly sought after Liga Privada Único Serie , Velvet Rat sports a flag-style cap and measures 6 1/4 inches by 46 ring gauge. It features a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, Brazilian mata fina binder and filler tobaccos hailing from Nicaragua and Honduras. The cigar, which is a toned-down version of the Dirty Rat, was previously released in 2012 as well as at last year's Connecticut Barn Smoker. According to Drew Estate, only 5,000 Velvet Rats will be available, and they are said to have been rolled in January 2015 and aging ever since.

However, in order for a fan to get their hands on a Velvet Rat, a few steps must be taken. First, they will need to sign up as a member (a free process) of the Drew Estate Diplomat program through the company's mobile app. The app, which is available for either Apple iOS or Android, was launched earlier in June and offers Drew Estate fans a mechanism to stay up-to-date on company news and earn points for a chance to win artwork from Subculture Studios, Drew Estate's art initiative. After downloading the app and signing up as a member, fans will then need to make a "qualifying promotional purchase" at one of the tour events, and in turn they will receive a Velvet Rat, while supplies last.

"One of the main goals of creating Drew Diplomat was to connect our Drew Estate final consumers to the retailers who have stood behind our premium cigars for so many years," said Michael Celluci, president of Drew Estate.

While tour stops are likely to be added, the list of events below is final as of today:

06/28/2016 - The Beer Sellar in Newport, KY from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Meet Your Maker (MYM) - Drew Estate Factory Tour of Smokes Cigar Sampler - Free Shipping!

The words "bundle cigar" are rarely used in the same sentence as the Drew Estate name, but with the introduction of Factory Smokes, the fantasy has now become a reality. Jonathan Drew has always been hesitant to make an entry into the value cigar scene, largely due to the fact that, in his own words, "Bundles aren't glamorous and the efficiency required to produce them effectively is not easily reached." Finally, however, in 2018, he and his expert team decided to take the plunge and introduce the Factory Smokes lineup. We must admit, for a bundle of cigars, Factory Smokes is nothing short of impressive.

Every version of Factory Smokes, including the three varieties in this sampler, is smoker-friendly to those of all experience levels. For beginners, the easy nature of the blends will come off as pleasant and welcoming, while more experienced cigar freaks will be glad to use these sticks as "time passers," or cigars to enjoy while doing yard work, walking the dog, or simply driving to work. A bundle cigar from one of the most sought-after names in the business? We are just as surprised as you are, and we promise that after trying these awesome value sticks, Factory Smokes by Drew Estate will quickly earn a cozy year-round spot in your humidor.

The MYM - Drew Estate Factory Tour of Smokes Sampler Includes:

5 x Factory Smokes Maduro Toro (6" x 52, ●●●○○ Medium) - Dark, oily maduro wrapper, with Indonesian binder and filler. Begins with a rich, earthy dose of raw tobacco, with notes of nutmeg, coffee, cocoa, and white pepper with a grassy undertone as the smoke progresses.

5 x Factory Smokes Shade Toro (6" x 52, ●●○○○ Mild-Medium) - A golden Connecticut Shade wrapper, with Indonesian binder and filler. Creamy, earthy profile, along with notes of cedar, crisp raw tobacco, and some mild sweetness in the background.

5 x Factory Smokes Sun Grown Toro (6" x 52, ●●●○○ Medium) - Sun Grown Habano wrapper, with Indonesian binder and filler. Begins with a rich earthy flavor, laced with hay and cedar. A subtle natural sweetness, along with a hint of cinnamon and black pepper are present throughout.

Camden’s Cole Anderson will compete in the PGA Tour Americas qualifying tournament in Courtenay, British Columbia starting Tuesday. Derek Davis/Staff Photographer

Cole Anderson is turning pro.

The Camden native, fresh off playing in the NCAA championships as a   Florida State senior, will make the jump from amateur to professional golfer Tuesday when he competes in the PGA Tour Americas qualifying tournament in Courtenay, British Columbia.

The tournament, known in golf parlance as “Q School,” will be held at Crown Isle Resort and Golf Community this week, running from Tuesday through Friday. A finish in the top nine would make Anderson, 23, automatically eligible to keep playing in Canada this summer in the 10 tournaments making up the North American swing of the PGA Tour Americas season. A finish in 10th through 25th would make him conditionally eligible for those tournaments. A total of 125 players are entered.

Anderson finished his five-year career at Florida State by leading the Seminoles to the NCAA final May 29, where they lost to Auburn, 3-2.

Anderson did his part, earning a 1-up victory against Carson Bacha. He also finished 6 over and was tied for 31st in the stroke play portion of the tournament.

Anderson, who in his high school career at Camden Hills won three Class A individual championships, is no stranger to professional tournaments, having held the lead through three rounds before settling for a tie for third in the Korn Ferry Tour’s Live and Work in Maine Open in 2022.

By turning pro, Anderson will join Topsham native Caleb Manuel, who played in a Q School event in San Jacinto, California after finishing up at the University of Georgia. Manuel finished tied for 24th to earn conditional PGA Tour Americas eligibility and made that cut in dramatic fashion, shooting a 7-under 65 in the final round Friday to finish 10 under overall and climb 32 places.

Manuel, who won his third straight Maine Amateur title last summer, shot 11 over to finish tied for 56th in an NCAA regional tournament to end his collegiate career, but in the tournament before tied for seventh at 4 under in the stroke play portion of the SEC championships.

The Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry continues to draw eyeballs.

Sunday’s Fever-Dream contest, featuring the two star rookies, was the most-watched WNBA game in 23 years, according to CBS Sports .

An average of 2.25 million people with a peak of 3 million tuned in to watch Clark and the Fever beat Reese and the Sky, 91-83.

The game featured Reese whacking Clark in the head while trying to block the Fever guard’s shot in the third quarter, earning her a flagrant 1.

Reese ripped the officiating after the game and indicating the number of calls weren’t balanced , saying “some people got a special whistle.”

The rivalry between Reese and Clark began during their college days but blossomed following their initial pro meeting on June 1.

Never miss a story.

That game was scrappy, highlighted by Chennedy Carter’s flagrant 1 foul – a gnarly hip-check – that sent Clark tumbling to the floor.

“Yeah, that’s just not a basketball play,” Clark said in an interview with ESPN at the time.

Following the game, Reese did not make herself available to the media, earning her a $1,000 fine .

Additionally, Carter claimed she had no regrets about her actions, saying they were all part of the game.

With the Carter foul adding another element to the build-up for the rematch, Sunday’s game drew a crowd of 17,274 people in Indianapolis.

Clark continues to draw big television audiences after setting multiple records during this year’s NCAA Tournament.

Clark generated an average 19 million average viewers during Iowa’s 87-75 loss to South Carolina in the 2024 national championship game — the most-watched college game ever, per Nielsen.

That broke records that were set during Iowa’s Elite Eight win over Reese and LSU, avenging the 2023 national title loss, and the Hawkeyes’ Final Four victory over UConn.

On Sunday, Clark had 23 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to help the Fever prevail.

The two teams play once again this Sunday in Chicago.

Justin timberlake struggled with ‘real drinking problem’ for years, was ‘in a very dark place’: sources.

Justin Timberlake’s issues with alcohol go way back, sources tell Page Six exclusively.

“It’s not a secret. Everyone knows,” a music insider who was privy to the information two years ago claims.

“He has a real drinking problem, a lot of weed — but a major alcohol problem, and he’s been hiding and masking it for years.”

Justin Timberlake and Eddie Burke Jr.

Another source, however, tells us Timberlake had not been drinking for a while prior to his DWI arrest Tuesday — and even lost weight and was living a healthier lifestyle, including cutting out booze before the April launch of his Forget Tomorrow World Tour.

Timberlake’s alleged secret appeared to rear its ugly head when he was charged with driving while intoxicated just after midnight after leaving dinner with friends at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor on Long Island.

A source close to the singer, 43, told us that cops, who had been stationed outside, pulled him over for a traffic violation.

Police said Timberlake refused a breathalyzer test after blowing through a stop sign and swerving on the road.

Our first source believes Timberlake’s alleged penchant for boozing “got to him” and that “everyone around him have been enablers.”

“It’s a real thing, and when you have a drinking problem, it’s apparent, yet they’ve pushed this tour on him, and he’s been a very dark place,” the insider claims.

Justin Timberlake

Negative press had taken a toll on Timberlake, according to another source, who echoes, “He’s been in a dark place.”

They claim the Grammy winner was “drinking heavily” around the time the New York Times’ 2021 documentary on his ex Britney Spears was released. He started making changes to his team to help manage the backlash he received from Spears’ fans for his mistreatment of the “Toxic” singer during their relationship in the early aughts.

“He was very concerned about his career and acting. People were very worried about him,” the insider says.

Justin Timberlake

A source close to Timberlake, however, insists the “SexyBack” singer “has never been better.”

“He’s in great shape. His tour is sold out. He’s in a good space,” they say.

Timberlake’s rep and lawyer did not immediately comment.

On Politics

The trump rallying cry that’s also a math problem.

His supporters can’t quite agree on whether to call him the 45th president or the 47th president.

  • Share full article

A close-up shot of a Trump supporter wearing a red hat with the numbers “45-47” on it and the words “Make America Great Again.”

By Jess Bidgood

Donald Trump and his supporters can’t quite seem to agree: Should he be labeled the 45th president, the 47th president or both?

As he takes the stage at rallies, he is sometimes introduced with both titles, making it almost sound as if he were two different people.

Last Friday, he was treated to a birthday celebration in West Palm Beach, Fla., by a group of supporters called Club 47 USA — which used to be called Club 45 USA, but changed its name. The group’s website, however, is still club45usa.com .

And the day before, Republican senators regaled him with a birthday cake containing two sets of numbered candles — a 45 and a 47. (According to a video posted on social media by one of his campaign accounts, only the 45 appeared to be lit when Trump received the cake.)

Trump was, of course, the country’s 45th president, and now might become its 47th — a number he has plastered all over his campaign’s infrastructure, including the name of his joint fund-raising committee, a URL for his fund-raising website and his grass-roots organizing program.

There may well be a strategy at play here. Trump has not been elected the 47th president, and his embrace of the figure came well before it was even clear that he would be his party’s nominee — making it an attempt to burnish the air of inevitability he often tries to project.

His references to 45 could be an antidote to the voter “ amnesia ” about his presidency. But the tussle between both can get confusing — and it serves as a quiet reminder that, no matter what he says about the 2020 election, someone else is No. 46.

A Cleveland-esque campaign twist

Trump is not the first president to try to serve nonconsecutive terms. That distinction goes to Grover Cleveland , the nation’s 22nd and 24th leader. But I could not find evidence that Cleveland slapped those numbers on his campaign buttons and pamphlets the way Trump has on his oversize hats and stickers.

Trump seems to be officially embracing the “47.” Visitors to his campaign website can click a button to donate $47. And he mentions the number frequently on the trail.

“As soon as I lift my hand from the Bible as your 47th president, I will seal the border, shut down the invasion of millions and millions of people coming into our country, and we will start an energy revolution,” he declared this year in New Hampshire.

Trump’s effort to claim the number 47 before he has won it has darker undertones, coming from a former president who tried to overturn the last election and won’t commit to accepting this year’s results. Many of his Republican allies continue to refer to him as “the president” — a choice that could either be seen as routine usage of the highest title he has held or as a reflection that much of the party rejects President Biden’s legitimacy.

But he can’t quite let the 45 go, either. Last summer, my colleagues reported , when Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa was trying to persuade all of the Republican presidential candidates to sign a football helmet she wanted to use to sell tickets to one of her annual political events, Trump returned it with his name plus the numbers “45” and “47.”

And as he campaigned in arenas during the primaries, his team often set the scoreboard to 45 and 47, my colleague Michael Gold told me — as if to signal that both the primary and the general election were already over.

This numerical tussle has also made its way to Trump’s merchandise. The Trump Store still stocks a “45” collection, offering blankets, pickleball paddles or flags emblazoned with the number 45.

At his campaign website, however, one can buy polo shirts, hats and stickers that say 45-47 — with the two numbers separated by a small hyphen that also reads as a minus sign. It almost seems like a simple math problem: 45-47 = -2.

There appears to be some disagreement, at least among merchandise providers, about the house style for capturing this unusual campaign twist.

Last week, at Trump’s rally in Las Vegas, I noticed that some of his supporters wore MAGA hats that said 45/47 on the side. That looked like a fraction (45/47, for anybody counting, equals .9574).

Others had the hats that said 45-47 on the side — and Antwon Williams, 42, was selling them, so I asked why he had chosen to use a hyphen rather than a slash in his designs.

To Williams, a private seller of Trump merchandise who has no connection with the campaign, the hyphen was sending a particular message. It means Trump is presidents 45 through 47, he explained.

“I believe he never stopped being our president,” Williams said. It was an intentional effort, he said, to erase the 46th president, Joe Biden.

A slash, he said, would mean Trump is 45 or 47. A period, he said, would indicate some kind of pause in his presidency. And a comma? “Never,” he said.

The symbolism was lost on at least one of his customers, David Ramirez, who had picked up a couple of red hats with 45-47 on the side.

“He’s the 45th president, and will be the 47th president,” Ramirez said when asked to explain its meaning.

“He’s not the 46th president,” Ramirez added. “Joe Biden is.”

The politics of retribution

Kevin McCarthy is on a revenge tour.

In a Republican primary for the House in Virginia, Representative Bob Good, the chairman of the ultraright House Freedom Caucus, is fighting for his political life in tomorrow’s race against State Senator John McGuire, an election denier and retired Navy SEAL who has Trump’s seal of approval. The contest is the second in a pair of high-profile primaries driven not by issues, but by an attempt from McCarthy, the former House speaker, to seek retribution against the lawmakers who voted him out of his post last year.

My colleague Annie Karni , who covers Congress, explained to me that what seems like a big drama is almost more of a “Seinfeld”-esque sitcom — a primary about nothing. Our conversation was edited for length and clarity.

It seems like there is a lot of bad blood in Washington right now. What’s a revenge primary? And who’s got one?

Over the past two weeks, we’ve seen two high-profile Republican primaries that were not about any issues. Last week, Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina beat back a challenge from a Republican backed by McCarthy-aligned outside groups, who spent millions trying to punish Mace for voting to oust him last year.

But Good has made even more enemies. He voted against McCarthy, who is now hellbent on revenge. He also angered Trump by endorsing one of his opponents, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, in the presidential primary race.

So the Good primary is, essentially, a campaign about nothing. He and McGuire are both very far to the right and don’t have any major or even minor policy disagreements, as far as I can tell. It’s a reminder of how the MAGA movement is based as much on allegiances and personal feuds as much as it is on ideology. And when Congress is not actually doing that much, it can start to feel as if personal feuds are central to the job.

Mace won easily. Good, though, appears to be in real trouble. Why do their fates seem to be diverging?

One word: Trump. Mace, a onetime Trump critic who now says she’s “all in” on him, landed his endorsement in March. Good never drew his support — even though he’s plastered Trump’s name on his lawn signs in an attempt to make it seem as if he did. If Bob Good had not endorsed DeSantis, he would most likely continue to be the chair of the House Freedom Caucus. He made a bad bet early, and it’s probably going to cost him his seat.

OK. McCarthy played a role here in recruiting primary opponents, but the force that really matters is Trump. How are voters making sense of all this?

During my reporting in Virginia, I watched a voter ask a McGuire volunteer why Good and McGuire were fighting each other. The volunteer couldn’t explain all the back and forth, so she just said that McGuire was a retired Navy SEAL with a Trump endorsement, and the voter said that was all she needed to know. She went from knowing seemingly nothing about the race to grabbing a McGuire sign and waving it to support him as he arrived at the rally.

You get to this place where voters are really just confused, because it’s not about anything that has actually has to do with them. They’re being asked to weigh in on something that actually is about the egos of very powerful people and not much else.

Where do you think this is going to take us, after the primaries and into the fall, if the main lesson is, “Cross Trump at your peril”?

On the Republican side of the aisle, the people who don’t want to become Matt Gaetz or Marjorie Taylor Greene are more often resigning and retiring, and more and more of the politicians in the mold of Trump are coming in. We’ll have more of the old-school Republicans gone, less middle ground.

You see in the Senate — every younger Republican senator is an isolationist, like J.D. Vance. All the younger ones are MAGA. You’re just seeing it take over and the people who aren’t like that and don’t want to bend to that faction of the party don’t want to be there anymore.

INTO THE REPLIES

Tell us: How are you feeling about the upcoming debate?

The first presidential debate of the general election is set for next Thursday, Jun. 27 — a summertime showdown with rare potential to shake up the race for the White House.

I’d like to know how you’re feeling about it . Are you excited? Are you dreading it? Are you planning to tune in at all?

And — crucially — what would you ask the candidates, if you could?

Let me know, using this form, and I may use your answer in an upcoming newsletter.

Presidential Race: News and Analysis

President Biden announced sweeping new protections  for hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who are married to U.S. citizens, a move that comes as Biden tries to strike a balance on one of 2024’s key issues.

The $1.9 trillion economic stimulus package that Biden signed shortly after taking office has become both an anchor and a buoy  for his re-election campaign.

Biden’s campaign began its most aggressive effort to brand Donald Trump a felon, with the introduction of a new ad  that focuses on Trump’s criminal conviction.

A Brawl in Virginia:  The Democratic primary in Virginia’s 10th House district will end what may be the ugliest fight of the 2024 primary season  — and start an unexpected general election battle.

Optimism in Florida?:  The state has become the red-hot center of the Republican universe. But recent surveys showing a tightening presidential race there have given some Democrats glimmers of hope .

Crypto’s Influence:  The crypto industry’s political awakening — and enormous pool of cash — is already affecting high-profile races across the country .

An Unusual Turnout Dynamic:  In a reversal of one of the most familiar patterns in American politics, it appears that Trump, not Biden, would gain if everyone in the country voted .
