The best part about this island destination is you do not need to be a tourist to experience all it has to offer; it is a country of deep historical foundations. Whether you are a local or a visitor on vacation, you can always learn more about Barbados.

Learn  interesting facts  about the island as well as everything you need to know about getting around the island, things to do, and what’s going on.

With so many great things to do, see, and experience, many have become excited and have chosen to live, stay, work, and have fun in this island country paradise.

Family Vacations

Barbados is the ideal destination when  Traveling with your family as it has something to offer everyone regardless of your age. If you are going with elder relatives such as grandparents or if you have a small baby, don’t worry Barbados can cater for all.

If you and your partner are traveling with children under 10, then it is advisable to book into an all-inclusive resort. They offer buffet-style lunches, so children can take as much or as little as they like and they usually have a barbecue serving burgers and hot dogs. This way you can relax and enjoy yourself and not have to worry about the children wanting to eat at different times or to have to organize where to go for lunch and dinner.

If you are traveling with teenagers, then they will love the St. Lawrence Gap area, which is abundant with bars, nightclubs, and restaurants, there is always something to do in the Gap, with live music playing most nights. Barbados is a very safe place for tourists, and you can let your teenage children wander around the Gap, where they can play pool or just hang out!

If you are traveling with older members of the family, then there are some great days out to be had visiting some of the most beautiful tropical gardens such as Andromeda or Orchid World. You can also have some meals to remember as Barbados boasts some of the best fining dining restaurants in the world. Or perhaps the family would enjoy afternoon tea at the world famous Sandy Lane Hotel.

Health and Fitness

With multiple first-rate  spas ,  gyms  and  health clubs, you can enjoy a healthy lifestyle staying happy and relaxed while on vacation.

Healthy activities and lifestyle choices in Barbados are on the rise, and our ‘no stress’ policy is essential to any healthy balanced lifestyle.

Fitness groups are common on the island. A variety of sports such as swimming, squash, tennis, sailing, windsurfing, polo, rugby and football (soccer) are great ways to get involved in the community and keep active and healthy in your life.

Another healthy Barbadian activity is to visit the infamous Oistins Fish Fry on a Friday evening. Get your daily dose of omega three fatty acids from the freshly grilled fish served with a variety of stalls in the quaint south coast fishing village.

Another part of a healthy lifestyle is finding time for your family and friends, and you’re sure to see loads of local relatives and friends out and about on Sundays for their weekly picnic by the beach.

Education and training are provided free to all Barbadians (Bajans) from age five to university level.

The government allocates the largest chunk – nearly a quarter – of its annual billion dollar budget to funding close to 100 primary and secondary schools, plus four tertiary level institutions.

State financing covers actual tuition, free bus fares to and from school and free books and meals for all primary students who need them.

There are several institutions available to support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

For the more academically inclined, post-secondary education is available as well as for the more technically minded, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP), provides day and night hands-on courses.

It’s therefore not surprising that this 166 square mile island of approximately 274,000 people boasts a literacy rate of nearly 98%.

At its current location, the town was established in 1628 by English settlers. The prior settlement was at St James Town. Bridgetown City is a popular West Indies travel vacation destination and serves as major financial and convention center, as well as a major cruise port of call in the Southern Caribbean. In 2011, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison were designated "UNESCO World Heritage Site".

The cruise port serves the entire Barbados Island (Caribbean Sea). It is managed by the port authority company "Bridgetown Cruise Terminals Inc". Its largest shareholders (investors) are the country's Government (through the state-owned company "Barbados Port Inc", with 30% share) and the private companies "Goddard Enterprises Ltd" (20%) and "Cave Shepherd & Co Ltd" (20%). The remaining 30% of the cruise terminal's shares are held by the general public (subscribed at the initial building stage of the port's development).

Barbados is included in many Southern Caribbean cruise itineraries, also visiting Leeward Islands (Guadeloupe, St Martin, St Barts, Nevis, St Kitts), Greater Antilles, Windward Islands (Martinique, St Vincent, St Lucia, Dominica), Curacao, Bonaire, Aruba.

Bridgetown Barbados also serves as turnaround (departure) port for cruise liners in the fleets of Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Princess, P&O UK (fly-cruise deals from Southampton England during the winter season).

In 2017, the cruise port handled a toyal of 818,752 passengers, or 12,9% increase over 2016 (725,020 passengers). Of all these cruise ship tourists, 137,541 stayed overnight (compared to 130,924 in 2016). The liner's winter 2021-2022 program (December 2021 through April 2022) was based on 3 itineraries - all leaving roundtrip from Port Bridgetown. RCI's fly-cruise deals were inclusive of cheaper charter flights from Miami . RCI's Barbados hotel packages offer tourists to stay in premium properties like Hilton Barbados Resort, Turtle Beach Resort, Sea Breeze Beach House Resort, South Beach Hotel Barbados, Radisson Aquatica Resort Barbados, Accra Beach Hotel & Spa.

For winter 2022-2023 season, Port Bridgetown reported a successful season handling 362 booked (358 received) cruise ship visits and 625,847 passengers (608,269 received), which was 86% of the pre-COVID record season 2018-2019 (726,028 passengers, 384 ship berthings).

For winter 2023-2024 (October-April), the cruise port had a record-breaking season with a total of 407 booked cruise ship berthings (392 received) from 26 different cruise line brands, with expected 741,265 passengers (715,527 received). The berthings' number included 18 maiden calls and a total of 217 homeporting operations/roundtrips from Bridgetown.

By annual passenger traffic (statistical data 2019), the Caribbean's top-10 largest airports are:

  • Luis Munoz Marin Airport/aka Isla Verde ( San Juan Puerto Rico ) with ~9,5 million pax
  • Punta Cana Airport ( Punta Cana Dominicana ) with ~7,2 million pax
  • Jose Marti Airport ( Havana Cuba ) with 5,7+ million pax
  • Sangster Airport ( Montego Bay Jamaica ) with ~4,8 million pax
  • Lynden Pindling Airport ( Nassau Bahamas ) with ~4,1 million pax
  • Las Americas Airport ( Santo Domingo Dominicana ) with ~4 million pax

  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

Because Barbados is a relatively small island - 21 miles (34 km) long and no more than 14 miles (23 km) wide - all attractions are close to the port, allowing the cruise traveler to enjoy a leisurely day at a laid back pace.

Cruise travelers will find lots of things to do in Barbados: be it perusing impeccably preserved landmarks (like the Parliament Building and Museum, a couple of churches, or the Synagogue and its Museum).

If you like contemplating unique sceneries don't miss the Bathsheba Bay or the Gun Hill Signal Station . For those that enjoy active pursuits, or just basking in the sun there are many and delightful beaches in Barbados, relatively close to the cruise port.

After all, Barbados rich history and cultural past are preserved in an exotic but harmonious mix of quaint tropical ambiance, lush landscapes, beautiful landmarks, and stunning beaches. It should be underlined that Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

Where is the port and cruise ships dock

The Cruise Port aka Deep Water Harbor is located on the South-Western side of the Island and, although not exactly right by the center of Bridgetown, it is within walking distance - 1 mile (or 1.700 meters) - to the main streets of the city.

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses . If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

The cruise terminal is one of the best in the Caribbean with all services and amenities the cruise traveler may require. On a large building, you will find an excellent Visitor Information Center , an area with Free mobile-friendly Wi-Fi , restrooms, souvenir and duty-free shops (both jewelry and liquor) and, last but not least, a post office where you can buy Barbadian Postal Stamps known for their exquisite designs.

Outside the Terminal, there is a dedicated shaded area for tour buses (on the left side), a few more souvenir and clothing shops (t-shirts, beach attire), and local transportation services such as Car Rental, Scooters, and ATV - be aware that driving in Barbados is on the left as expected on a former British Colony.

Taxi services are available at the covered dispatch center and although official fares are displayed, make sure to always confirm rates and currency - US dollars are widely accepted. Within walking distance

For those that enjoy walking, the path from the exit of the Cruise Terminal along the ocean up to the historical downtown and the Careenage (an interesting area of Bridgetown) is both safe and pleasurable . Have in mind that it will be hot and you should wear cool clothing, walking shoes, a hat, and sunscreen is never frivolous.

Photo of Walking Path to Bridgetown Barbados

Walking Path to Bridgetown

The wide avenue outside the exit gates of the cruise port is the Princess Alice Highway. On the right side, by the ocean, the path is lined with trees and along the way, there are a few places with benches and tables to have a rest. On the left side there are a few places worth a look: the Rolli's Bar and Grill, the Caribbean Cigar Company selling the Royal Barbados brand and the Pelican Village Craft Center .

The Highlights of Bridgetown

Once you pass the Bridgetown Fish Market (on the right) you would have walked already 1/2 mile (800 meters). Around 300 feet (100 meters) more and you will have the alternative to keep walking straight into Hincks Street or turn left into Cumberland Street . The latter will take you to Jubilee Gardens and St. Mary's Church (a major Anglican church in Bridgetown) which is a stone's throw away from the shopping area of downtown (Broad Street and around).

Photo of Interior St. Mary's Church in Bridgetown Barbados

The walk into Hinks Street leads to Wharf Road, a Boardwalk and the Careenage. Along the way, at the Cloister Building, on the left, the Agapey Chocolate Factory is a place to visit if you have a sweet tooth and even consider a tour (1 hour for US$20).

After a right followed by a left turn, you will find yourself on Wharf Road with its boardwalk and it becomes clear that you are in historical surroundings. This is the place where, once upon a time, ships were careened onto a side to be repaired, scrubbed and painted, hence the Careenage eponymous. Now, on the narrow mouth of the Constitution River , sleek yachts, touristic and fishing expeditions boats dock on both banks. Farther along, the Wharf Road borders the National Heroes Square with a statue of Lord Nelson and the imposing Parliament Building which are impossible to miss.

The pedestrian Chamberlain Bridge crosses the river to the south bank. At the end of the bridge, the Independence Arch is a famous landmark and a great photo op. Immediately after, on the left, is the seafront greenery of Interior St. Mary's Church and on the right is where you could have a refreshing drink or a light lunch before the Covid pandemic. Unfortunately, popular places like the Marina Bar and the Waterfront Café have closed down.

For those interested in all things historical, you should return to the National Heroes Square to visit the Parliament Building, St. Michaels Cathedral (built in 1784) and the Nidhe Israel Museum and Synagogue (an absolute must-see regardless of your faith or absence of).

If shopping is on your plans, turn left on Heroes Square into Board Street as this is where the best duty-free shops and departments stores are found.

Among the typical stores found all over the caribbean, here are some othe best shops you will find in Barbados Cruise port:

  • Colombian Emeralds
  • Diamonds International
  • Litlle Switzerland
  • The Royal Shop
  • David Yurman

It took a few calls at Bridgetown Cruise Port for the Editor to realized that the Careenage is very close to the famous Boatyard Beach Bar and Club - less than 1/4 of a mile (400 meters) south of the Independence Arch. In fact, the Carlisle Bay's northern tip is the mouth of the Constitutional River , and on the bay, the Boatyard is just one of the many clubs and bars that line the sugar white sands and turquoise waters of Barbados spectacular beaches of this Bay and where the best snorkeling sites in Barbados are located. However, be aware that Carlisle Bay is close to two miles long.

Editors' Tip: if the Boatyard or any of the beach clubs on Carlisle Bay are on your to do list, it is advisable to get there (or back) by taxi as the walk from the cruise port is over 2 miles (3 km).

Sightseeing:

Barbados is the most easterly of all the Caribbean islands. The island is very British including high tea and cricket matches.

In Bridgetown visit the Parliament Building, The Old Synagogue, St. Michael's Cathedral.

Barbados is a coral island, pushed out of the sea by volcanic activity in a far away time. On the West Coast of Barbados, coral shore beaches of fine white sand stretch along a blue-green sea. Coral reefs fringe the Barbados shoreline to provide excellent snorkeling and Scuba Diving. Along the East Coast, a lively surf is blown briskly by the strong and constant trade winds and the waves pound against a rocky shore. The constant breeze of the trade winds gives Barbados a mild and pleasant tropical climate.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Most of the Bridgetown sites are within easy walking distance of city center.

At Payne's Beach snorkeling with the turtles. The beach is nice and it is an easy swim out to where the turtles are. (just look where the catamarans are)

Mount Gay Rum Distillery Tour. You can see how sugarcane is made into the final product at the Mount Gay Rum Distillery.

If you want to save some money, there is no need to join a crowded tour, just take a taxi and go on your own. walk down to the parliament building and square where many cabs are situated and create your own tour with a time frame that you like with a cabbie. Hourly rate of about $40 per car.

If you want to rent a car: Rates are steep and driving is on the left.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

Harrison’s Cave : Located in the central uplands of Barbados, is a magnificent attraction with a world class attraction, with unmatched beauty. Harrison's Cave is a massive underground cave stream system, with awesome caverns and breathtaking formations. Enjoy an unparalleled underground experience as you journey aboard a tram, past clear streams and cascading waterfalls.

Andromeda Botanic Gardens : The Andromeda Botanical Gardens, found in the parish of St.Joseph, is a six-acre garden containing several varieties of orchids, palms, ferns, heliconia, hibiscus, bougainvillea, begonias, and cacti.

Sunbury Planatation House is over 300 years old, steeped in history, featuring mahogany antiques, old prints and a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages. This is the only great house, with all rooms available for viewing.

Flower Forest : 53.6 acres reserved only for green botanical ventures, never to be developed for housing or industry, with 7 acres of wild garden in the Barbados ‘Scotland District’ 750 ft above sea level with Panoramic views.

At the heart of Barbados lies one of its greatest wonders, Harrison’s Cave . Located in the central uplands of the island, this breathtakingly beautiful, crystallized limestone cavern is a testament to nature’s mastery. Flowing streams, deep pools of crystal clear water and towering columns characterize this living cave.

Shopping and Food

Many duty-free shops cater to visitors, e.g., from cruise ships. Bridgetown's main street hosts numerous duty-free jewelers. At least one department store in Bridgetown (Cave Shepherd) offers a wide range of mercantile. The small mall at the harbor also offers decent prices and selection, though goods produced in Barbados may be more expensive there than elsewhere on the island. Duty-free stores require that you show your passport and cabin key card

Swan Street, a pedestrian only mall, has stores selling cheap clothes.

Chattel Village: Located in Holetown, a short drive away, this village offers a charming setting with colorful chattel houses housing shops selling local crafts, art, and souvenirs.

Stores are generally open weekdays 8:30–4:30, Saturday 8:30–1pm.

The local currency is the Bajan dollar, but US dollars bills are accepted just about everywhere in shops and restaurants. US$1 = BD$2.

Currency Converter

Communication:

The official language of Barbados is English, but the Bajan dialect is widely spoken.

There are several small cafes which offer free WiFi for customers located around the island as well as connections offered by the larger resort hotels. Also in the cruise terminal.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Most stores are open until noon on Saturday and then nothing opens till Monday morning. On holiday weekends (Good Friday, national holidays, etc.) that fall on or close to a weekend stores may be closed for three or four days at a stretch.
