London travel news LIVE: Trains delayed and cancelled between St Pancras and Blackfriars

tube travel london today

Lines between London St Pancras and London Blackfriars are blocked, because of “a number of incidents”.

Thameslink trains were brought to a standstill after a failure to the electricity at London St Pancras earlier on Friday, but it is unclear if this is still the issue.

National Rail expects this disruption to continue until at least 5pm.

Southeastern trains through New Cross were facing heavy disruption for the whole of Friday morning but this has cleared up now.

It comes after a week of tube stations being periodically shut on different days, when Customer Service Managers who are members of the TSSA union walked out on strike.

Two Tube stations were still closed early on Friday morning, after TSSA members walked out in strike on Thursday night.

Bermondsey and Borough were shut “due to the unavailability of staff” but both have since re-opened.

Tube strike: All London Underground stations closed today and Thursday over walkout TfL says is 'unnecessary'

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union are staging a walkout over pensions, working conditions and jobs, but the operator says the strikes are "unnecessary" as no changes to pensions have been proposed.

Londoners face major delays this week because of strike action by thousands of workers on the Tube.

All London Underground lines are suspended on Tuesday and Thursday, with a knock-on effect on Wednesday and Friday.

Walkouts by Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members will take place on all Tube lines on Tuesday and Thursday.

Tube strikes planned across all lines. Highly likely there will be no service on Tuesday 1 and Thursday 3 March. Services next morning also affected. For essential journeys, check your travel. — Transport for London (@TfL) February 28, 2022

Transport for London (TfL) said anyone who relied on the Tube to travel should work from home if they can or take alternative forms of transport.

There are no Tubes running on Tuesday, with similar cancellations expected on Thursday.

Mayor asks unions to 'work with City Hall'

A spokesperson for Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "The upcoming strike action will cause disruption to Londoners and businesses that are trying to recover from two devastating years.

"It will also damage TfL's revenues at a time when TfL is already under huge financial strain due to the pandemic.

"TfL are working to mitigate the impact of the strikes but disruption is inevitable. The mayor urges Londoners who need to travel on 1 March and 3 to check before they make their journey, consider whether they are able to work from home and use alternative modes of transport where possible.

"Sadiq doesn't want to see strike action and is imploring the unions to come to the table and work with City Hall and TfL."

Raid on pensions is 'unfair'

RMT members are taking action in a dispute over jobs, pensions and working conditions.

The union's general secretary, Mick Lynch, said the mayor knows "this raid on our members' pensions and conditions is unfair" and would lead to industrial action.

"Yet only last week we find out that the mayor has agreed to submit proposals to the government that will result in attacks on those pensions.

"Which side is he on? The side of our members who risked their lives as key workers in COVID and are now, as he predicted, striking to defend [their] livelihoods and future?

"Or the side of a Tory government which wants to attack jobs, pensions, conditions and services?

"The mayor can solve this dispute by agreeing to talks that meet the concerns of his own workforce.

"Our members are central to the future of passenger safety and confidence on the Tube, and they'll be at the heart of London's recovery.

"For the good of his workers and London's recovery, Sadiq needs to stand firm against the government, stop the pensions raid and end the job massacre."

Action is 'unnecessary'

However, TfL's chief operating officer, Andy Lord, said the network hasn't "proposed any changes to pensions".

"Nobody has or will lose their jobs because of the proposals we have set out, so this action is completely unnecessary," he said.

"We know our customers deserve better than this and that is why we're urging the RMT to talk to us so we can find a resolution to this dispute and call off this action, which is threatening London's recovery from the pandemic."

The disruptions will also lead to the closure of five stations on the Great Northern's Northern City Line, from Drayton Park to Moorgate, which are operated as part of the London Underground network.

Great Northern Trains will be diverted from Finsbury Park to Kings Cross, with no service to Drayton Park, Highbury & Islington, Essex Road, Old Street and Moorgate.

Southern, Great Northern and Thameslink trains around London are expected to be busier than usual and passengers are warned journeys may take longer than usual.

The London Marathon 2024 will weave through the streets of the capital from Greenwich to Westminster on Sunday 21 April, and thousands of spectators are going to be lining the route for a glimpse of their running friends.

Over 50,000 people are expected to take on the mammoth two-foot tour of London landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Cutty Sark and Tower Bridge.

Since the inaugural 26.2 mile event in 1981, the fundraising race has raised millions for charities each year, and, with sunshine on the forecast for now, celebrations of the charitable and physical feat will take place across the city.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the day if you’re running  or  supporting this year’s London Marathon.

London Marathon 2024 start time and date

  • The best luxury hotels in London for a stylish city break
  • The best spa hotels in London for pampering and indulgence
  • Best boutique hotels in London 2022

The London Marathon 2024 will take place on Sunday 21 April.

Exact timings for this year’s races are yet to be confirmed but staggered start times from around 8.30am are the norm, with the masses setting off in waves at 10am and all start lines closed from 11.30am.

The finish line on The Mall closes at 7.30pm and is then moved to St James’ Park until midnight.

London Marathon route

Largely unchanged since 1981, the start line for the race is in Blackheath at the top of Greenwich Park .

From here, a leg to Woolwich, jog past the Cutty Sark and stretch around Bermondsey takes runners to cross the river over Tower Bridge .

After a ring around the Isle of Dogs, it’s a relatively straight stretch along the Thames through the City of London to the Westminster finish line on The Mall.

Will there be train and tube strikes?

There is a planned overtime ban for Aslef members working for LNER on Friday 19 and Sunday 21 April (marathon day), as well as strikes on Saturday 20 April, so those travelling into London from the northeast will likely face cancellations.

Substantial road closures across the capital to make way for the race mean spectators should travel on foot or by tube – roads will reopen as and when all runners have cleared the area.

Marathon participants will receive free travel home up to 6.30pm on marathon day on the London Underground and Overground, buses and DLR.

TfL said that a modified DLR service will start at 5.30am from Tower Gateway to Lewisham so runners arrive on time to the start line.

Rail services out of London to the midlands and the northwest are also expected to be extremely busy from 6pm due to an FA Cup semi-final taking place at Wembley Stadium.

The best spots to watch the London Marathon in person

If the live BBC coverage won’t cut it and you’re coming to support from the sidelines, spectators can watch along most parts of the route, including The Highway in Wapping, where runners will pass twice.

To be in the heart of the action, the halfway point of Tower Bridge at mile 13, and the finish line at The Mall are bound to be exciting but busy. For a quieter spot to cheer, stay east and line up in Deptford or the Isle of Dogs.

Track friends and family taking part using their marathon number on the TCS London Marathon app to best position yourself to catch them on the go.

Marathon organisers advise that some areas, including those by the Cutty Sark and St James’ Park, are likely to be very busy on the day.

Five accessible viewing areas also dot the course for those with disabilities: in Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Rainbow Row, Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment.

Where to celebrate along the route

London has plenty of pubs and bars to quench the post-marathon thirst, whether you’ve been running or cheering.

In Greenwich, The Gipsy Moth has Cutty Sark views, The Angel in Bermondsey sits on the Thames and halfway pub, the Tower Bridge Arms, raises pints of IPA to passers-by.

Wet your palette in Wapping’s local Turner’s Old Star, ride the high at Pergola on the Wharf for city views, or refuel at Hung, Drawn & Quartered in Tower Hill with pies and ales.

At Victoria Embankment, board pub boat Tattershall Castle to cheer runners on for the final mile and savour a cold one at The Westminster Arms just before the finish line.

Once the race has been run, Inn the Park restaurant in St James’ Park is ideal for a light bite or head into Mercato Mayfair for a street food party in a restored church.

How to sign up for the London Marathon 2025

After a  record number of entries  signed up for the 26.2-mile race in 2024 – 578,374 applicants according to event organisers – next year’s London Marathon is bound to be another popular event.

To take on the challenge, entry is available through a ballot, international tour operators, charity spaces and athletics clubs.

The public ballot for the 2025 TCS London Marathon will open on Saturday 20 April and close the following Friday (26 April). Winners will be drawn at random and emailed in July ahead of the 27 April 2025 marathon.

A knotty problem: Boffins working on fuel-efficient trajectories for space travel

Not yet the london underground style efficient schematic we want, but it's a start.

Boffins at the UK's Surrey Space Centre have devised a way of determining the optimal route for spacecraft that doesn't require the engines to burn precious fuel.

The concept of shifting from one orbit to another without using fuel is not a new one. Engineers have turned to heteroclinic connections as a way of transferring a spacecraft between orbits without expending propellant. However, calculating these points presents a challenge, requiring either immense amounts of computing power or a human-in-the-loop to make an intelligent estimate that can be worked from.

In 2019, a paper was published, extolling the virtues of using artificial neural networks to identify heteroclinic connections.

The Voyager probes undertook the Grand Tour [PDF] based on a certain alignment of the planets that occurs once every 175 years. They used orbital mechanics and gravity assists to take in Jupiter, Saturn, and, in the case of Voyager 2, Uranus, and Neptune. However, the need to save fuel on missions closer to home has become a priority, thanks in part to NASA's Artemis program.

tube travel london today

While a direct moonshot is all well and good, planners want to cut down on the fuel needed for expeditions around the vicinity of the Moon, particularly considering that a substantial chunk of the Artemis program involves the construction of the Lunar Gateway in orbit around the Moon. Hence the need for fuel-minimal trajectories in the vicinity of the Moon.

It's a variation of the classic three-body problem. One body is the spacecraft itself, while the other two are the Earth and the Moon. Yet calculating a trajectory to travel from point A to point B while using minimal fuel, thanks to heteroclinic connections, is no easy task.

The approach published by Postgraduate Research Student Danny Owen and Lecturer in Orbital Mechanics Dr Nicola Baresi this week uses knot theory , an area of mathematics. This is used to generate rough trajectories that can then be refined, effectively giving space agencies a variety of possible routes from a specific orbit.

  • US reckons it's about time the Moon had its own time zone

Solar eclipse darkened skies, dampened internet traffic

  • NASA to shoot rockets at April solar eclipse to see how it messes with the atmosphere
  • Google searches for boss to get grip on climate, energy costs of this AI hype cycle

Owen said: "Previously, when the likes of NASA wanted to plot a route, their calculations relied on either brute force or guesswork.

"Our new technique neatly reveals all possible routes a spacecraft could take from A to B, as long as both orbits share a common energy level.

"This makes the task of planning missions much simpler. We think of it as a tube map for space."

The researchers have applied the technique to other planetary systems, including the Galilean moons of Jupiter, in addition to the Earth-Moon system. ®

Updates: New storms developing west of Des Moines. Weather could turn severe again

A second round of severe weather has brought several tornado warnings to western and eastern parts of Iowa on Tuesday afternoon. But, central Iowa has avoided most of the severe weather in this round so far.

Storms are expected to continue developing in western Iowa and move across the state into the evening.

Closer to Des Moines, minor damage was reported after a tornado near Minburn in Dallas County late Tuesday morning.

The latest updates | Jump to safety tips or current radar :

3:25 p.m. Iowa State Patrol trooper records tornado in Pocahontas County

Trooper Paul Gardner, an Iowa State Patrol public resource officer, posted a video to Twitter around 3:25 p.m. Tuesday showing a tornado in a rural area of Pocahontas County. He posted other photos showing a tornado near Mason.

The area was under a tornado warning from about 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Tornado warnings have been issued throughout the afternoon in northwest, northeast and southeast Iowa.

2:50 p.m.: Tornado damage confirmed near Minburn in Dallas County

The Dallas County Sheriff's office confirmed that three agricultural buildings were severely damaged or destroyed due to the tornado that traveled for 6-7 miles. All other structural damages were minor, the sheriff's office said.

2:45 p.m.: Tornado reported near Le Mars earlier on Tuesday

Media in northwest Iowa are reporting that a tornado touched down near Le Mars on Tuesday afternoon. A video shared by Sioux City TV station KTIV showed a tornado forming over farmland.

2:43 p.m.: Tornado reported near Rockwell City

A tornado warning was in effect until 3:15 p.m. for the area around Rockwell City in north central Iowa.

The NWS shared video from a storm chaser showing a tornado forming over farmland.

1:43 p.m.: New storms developing west of Des Moines, more severe weather possible

More severe weather is likely to hit Iowa this afternoon.

NWS posted on social media that round one is ongoing and heading east of Interstate 35. A second wave of storms was starting to develop in west-central Iowa as of 1:40 p.m. It is expected to move toward the Des Moines area later this afternoon and could trigger more severe weather.

A third round is expected across Nebraska and South Dakota, weakening as it moves into Iowa later today.

A tornado watch remains in effect until at least 6 p.m. for most of the state. Some portions of western Iowa are under a watch until 7 p.m.

Current Des Moines, central Iowa radar

The National Weather Service radar shows a line of strong storms north and east into central Iowa.

12:45 p.m.: Severe thunderstorm warnings expire

All tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings originally in effect for portions of central Iowa have expired.

Tornado watches remain for most of the state and more storms are expected to develop this afternoon.

12:52 p.m.: Power outages fixed for most Des Moines area residents

More than 200 people are without power in the Des Moines area as severe weather sweeps the state.

Approximately 5,800 MidAmerican customers lost power before noon, according to the  energy company's website .

Tornado watch expanded to include Ames, Des Moines until 6 p.m.

Eight Iowa counties have been added to a tornado watch, issued by NWS until 6 p.m. tonight. Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Marshall, Polk, Poweshiek, Story and Tama counties are newly added.

The watch originally included Adams, Adair, Appanoose, Clarke, Davis, Decatur, Lucas, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Ringgold, Taylor, Union, Wapello, Warren, Wayne

Tornados and hail are possible. Isolated wind gusts up to 60 mph are expected.

A watch means that conditions are favorable for tornados to develop. Other storm threats include scattered large hail and damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, according to NWS.

Tornado watch issued for northwest Iowa until 7 p.m.

Parts of Northwest Iowa are under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. Including Algona, Atlantic, Carroll, Le Mars, Sioux Center, Sioux City, Spirit Lake and Storm Lake. This is in addition to the watch for central and southern Iowa.

11:12 a.m.: Tornado confirmed near Minburn

The National Weather Service reported at 11:12 a.m. that there was a confirmed tornado just east of Minburn in Dallas County. Residents are advised to seek shelter immediately.

What is a tornado and what does a tornado warning mean?

According to NWS, a tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from the base of a thunderstorm down to the ground. Tornadoes are capable of completely destroying well-made structures, uprooting trees and even hurling objects through the air.

A tornado warning is issued when a tornado is indicated by the WSR-88D radar or sighted by spotters, NWS says. Therefore, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Warnings can be issued without a tornado watch being in effect already.

How do you stay safe during a tornado?

National Weather Service said that during a tornado, you should:

  • Get as low as possible. A basement below ground level or the lowest floor of a building offers the greatest safety.
  • Put as many walls between yourself and the outside as possible
  • Avoid windows at all costs.

If you live in a house with no basement or an apartment building, safety tips from the National Weather Service include:

  • Go to the lowest floor and take shelter in a small center room, like a bathroom or closet, under a stairwell, or in an interior hallway with no windows.
  • Crouch as low as possible to the floor, facing down; and cover your head with your hands.
  • Metal bathtubs offer a shell of protection, but not plastic or fiberglass. If your bathtub is plastic or fiber glass, cover yourself with thick padding like a mattress or blankets to protect against falling debris.

What should you do if you’re driving during a tornado warning?

If you’re driving, particularly on interstates or highways, do not try to outrun a tornado.

If you are driving in an area with a tornado warning, you should look for ways to safely get off the road and out of your vehicle — preferably by seeking refuge in a sturdy building.

As a last resort, lie flat in the nearest depression, ditch or culvert and cover your head with your arms.

What’s the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning?

A Tornado watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the area, according to NWS.  They are usually issued for 4 to 8 hours and take effect several hours before storms may arrive.

However, a tornado warning is issued when a tornado is imminent. Warnings can be triggered by reports from trained weather spotters or indications on radar. When a tornado warning is issued, you should seek safe shelter immediately.

Mount Ruang Erupts in Indonesia, Spewing Lava Thousands of Feet Into the Sky

Hundreds of earthquakes were detected in the weeks preceding the eruption of the volcano in North Sulawesi province. Hundreds of people were evacuated.

Mount Ruang, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, spewing fiery lava and ash thousands of feet into the night sky and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the North Sulawesi province, according to the authorities and local news reports.

The volcano erupted at about 7:19 p.m. local time, Antara, the national news agency, reported. The country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Wednesday that more than 800 people in nearby villages were displaced by the eruption, many using ferries and taking shelter in churches and community centers.

A large cloud of ashes rises from a volcano into the clouds, illuminated by the orange flames from the lava. The light is reflected on the waters.

The authorities said supplies such as mats, blankets, cleaning materials, and tents were needed, and that more shelters might be opening for people fleeing the volcano.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago nation. It is spread across what is known as the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates clash under the surface of the Pacific Ocean and spawn earthquakes and eruptions from volcanoes.

Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano , or a steep, conical volcano that has built up over years in layers from explosive eruptions of lava, rock fragments, ash and other properties.

“It is in a part of the world where there are a lot of active volcanoes,” said Dr. Tracy K.P. Gregg , who chairs the geology department at the University at Buffalo.

Its last major eruption was in 2002, when the column of lava and ash that it spewed reached up to 17 miles, Dr. Gregg said.

She said the volcano in 2002 measured 4, a “large” volcano on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, a scale used to measure the strength of an eruption by looking at several factors, such as duration, ash volume and plume height. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 measured 6 on the index. Mount St. Helens in the United States in 1980 measured 5.

“So it is a little bit smaller than that,” she said of Mount Ruang. Right now, it is not as violent as the previous eruption, she added, but the volcano cannot be fully assessed while it is in progress.

More than 300 volcanic earthquakes were detected over a period of at least two weeks preceding the eruption of Mount Ruang.

It is not immediately clear why the volcano erupted when it did. “Every volcano has its own personality,” she said.

In the past few years, several volcanoes in Indonesia have erupted. In December, 2023, the bodies of 11 hikers were found on the slopes of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra, after an eruption that spewed an ash column of nearly 3,000 meters — about 10,000 feet high.

In December 2022, more than 1,900 people were evacuated from the area surrounding Mount Semeru as it erupted. In an eruption there the previous December , more than 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.
