AC/DC Set To Announce Massive U.S. Tour Dates

AC/DC is reportedly gearing up for a European tour in 2024, with unexpected details emerging during a Munich city council meeting. Mayor Dieter Reiter casually revealed that the iconic band is scheduled to grace Munich’s Olympic Stadium on June 12 next year.

In addition to this, it looks like AC/DC are likely to announce a massive U.S. Stadium tour sometime today. This is planned to happen at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.

Following the revelation, Reiter remarked, “I didn’t know it was supposed to be a secret.”

The buzz around AC/DC’s 2024 tour gained traction after their electrifying performance at California’s Power Trip Festival in early October, marking their first live show in seven years. Despite the excitement, no official confirmation has been provided by the band or their representatives regarding these speculations.

At this point, AC/DC will likely tour globally in 2024.

Adding to the speculation, trusted international concert source and Brazilian journalist José Norberto Flesch shared on social media about AC/DC potentially participating in the Rock In Rio festival in Rio De Janeiro come September 2024.

In a recent conversation with New Zealand’s Stuff, drummer Phil Rudd hinted at an imminent live performance. Although he didn’t partake in the festival gig, Rudd expressed his anticipation, saying, “I’m looking forward to playing with them again in the future.”

AC/DC (formed in November 1973) is a seminal and highly revered Australian hard rock band hailing from Sydney, on the south-east coast of Australia.

Guitarist Malcolm Young formed AC/DC with fifteen year-old younger brother and lead guitarist Angus Young in 1973. With the addition of vocalist Bon Scott, bassist Mark Evans and drummer Philip Rudd, the band’s first four albums established AC/DC as a solid hard-rock act across the U.S. Known for their huge riffs and macho lyricism over simple yet rowdy and aggressive power chords, the band earned a hardy and devoted following early on, but didn’t break into the charts until the 1979 platinum album “Highway to Hell”.

In 1980 lead singer Bon Scott died after choking on his own vomit following a night of all-out drinking and was replaced by the ex-Geordie vocalist Brian Johnson two months later. Johnson’s vocal debut came on “Back in Black” which enjoyed a year-long run in the U.S. chart, selling over 22 million copies, which made in the fifth best-selling album in U.S. history.

Throughout the ‘80s and ’90s AC/DC released a solid stream of albums that earned the band their highly revered and seminal status. “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”, a reissue of their 1976 “Australian” LP arrived in 1981, followed by the group’s first No. 1 album “For Those About to Rock, We Salute You” the same year, “Flick of the Switch” appeared in 1983 and “Fly on the Wall” in 1985. These made way for the multi-platinum “Maximum Overdrive” soundtrack album “Who Made Who” and “The Razor’s Edge” in 1990, a five-times certified platinum album featuring the singles “Thunderstuck” and “Moneytalks”.

The release of the band’s twelfth studio album “Ballbreaker” in 1995 saw the return of drummer Phil Rudd to the mix, and was succeeded by the five-CD box set “Bonfire” (1997) featuring a selection of live tracks and a remastered version of “Back in Black”. “Stiff Upper Lip” arrived in 2000 reaching No. 7 on the Billboard 200 album chart, followed by the usual extensive and elaborately designed tour schedule.

After an eight year wait for fans, AC/DC returned with the release of “Black Ice” in 2008. The album attempted to recapture the sound and feel of the band’s early material and quickly became a commercial success, finding the top of the charts in 29 countries including the U.S. In 2009 with the release of the nostalgic box set “Backtracks” came an announcement from the Recording Industry of America that AC/DC were the ninth-best selling artist in U.S. history.

“Rock or Bust”, AC/DC’s fifteenth studio album was released in 2014 on Sony Records. The release brought a 40 year anniversary tour and marked the departure of original member Malcolm Young who suffering from dementia was replaced by his nephew Stevie Young.

Was a great show as always, (been watching them live since 1986)

New in the line up was Stevie Young, and the return of Chris Slade (from the Razors edge tour)

Slade appeared to labor and fight through some of the songs when the camera was on him, but kept the beat and tempo well.

Stevie looked panicked and a little intimidated on stage, but have to give him credit for jumping in for Malcolm it was obvious he hasn't done this for the 42 years the other band-mates have.

I've rather gotten used to the fact that Clive and Malcolm were always in the background until it was time to sing back up vocals, so this was no different,

Clive and Stevie did a great job, and the background vocals sounded much better than the Black Ice tour from 5 years ago when I last saw them in Las Vegas.

It has always been all about Angus and Brian Johnson running around the stage.

This venue was amazing, the atmosphere was electric, and my estimate for the crowd was 70,000

From my seats the entire floor (soccer pitch) was packed, and even the steady rain that had been falling all day was not enough to damper spirits,

the crowd was ready to party.

The opening act, (sorry I don't know the name)

appeared to be a local German cover band, pandering to the crowd with hits from the 80's and sang local drinking songs to get the crowd pumped.

The next act Vintage Trouble, had great energy, the lead singer reminded me of a Chuck Berry, James Brown, and Jimmy Hendrix mix, had great vocals, and worked the stage hard, however the crowd just wasn't responding to the blues-rock sound they were pounding out.

Up next ACDC,

there really isn't anything I can say about this band that hasn't been said.

They work hard, played the classic hits that have spawned generations of rockers

and are simply amazing.

The setlist was pretty much an even split of Johnson, and Bon Scott songs,

It was a nice throwback having at least 9 songs that came from the 70's

Song that was removed from previous shows, "the jack" was a nice change.

I personally have always felt it was a mood killer and brought down the tempo of the crowd even though that was taking away from the crowd to repeat "the jack" over and over,

This also eliminated Angus' "strip-tease"

not sure if it was because of the weather, or Angus doesn't want to expose his 60 year old butt anymore,

but his solo, which rocked kept the 70,000 fans standing all night long.

Johnson appeared to have a mic issue nearing the end of the concert, and his frustration and emotions were caught, but still pushed through,

as a long time fan I can only give this a 5/5 rating.

Looking forward to their return to North America in the fall.

Attending a concert in a giant corporate arena is a necessary evil when it comes to seeing high-profile bands with a large stage presence, but when done right, those arena-ready bands can make you forget the hell you’re living in. AC/DC flipped that script right on its head last night when they brought their Rock or Bust World Tour to the Pepsi Center. For the Australian rockers, Hell isn’t a place to be avoided, it is to be celebrated. So when the lights went down on the capacity crowd, thousands of red devil-horns lit the seats as Denver welcomed the iconic band back to the Northern Hemisphere. A space odyssey scene played out on the giant screen before everything was blown to bits when Brian Johnson and Angus Young took the stage to rattle brains with the title track off their latest album. By packing a stadium-sized show into a modestly-sized arena, the band achieved maximum visual and sonic impact, proving that Hell really ain’t a bad place to be.

One of my first large-scale rock shows was AC/DC’s Ballbreaker Tour at San Diego Sports Arena. Some friends and I had 2nd row tickets for my 19th birthday. That was on February 12th, 1996. Twenty years later (almost to the day), I found myself doing the same thing in a different city with different friends. Having attended hundreds of shows since that night in San Diego, I didn’t think there was any way an aging AC/DC could impress the way they did back then. I was wrong. The absence of Malcolm Young (due to serious health issues) is something that has to be mentioned, just out of pure respect, but his nephew, the 57-year-old Stevie Young, provided more than enough coverage to keep the band tight. And while Chris Slade kept his personality in the background all night, he is no stranger to touring with the band, so the troubled Phil Rudd was hardly missed on drums. In all reality, any capable musicians would have done fine though, because all eyes were on Angus Young and Brian Johnson the entire night. Awesome gig, AC/DC still know how to put on a great show! They know what the crowd want, and romp through their greatest hits including the Bon Scott days, still finding time for three from the new album.

All the theatrical elements are there - the great bell for Hells Bells, the cannons for For Those About To Rock, the inflatable Rosie, Angus' frenzied guitar solo. For Scotland we were also treated to a few bars of Loch Lomond as the intro to Highway to Hell, a nice touch. The only thing missing is Angus' long-standing striptease and mooning of the audience - is he now too old to do it, or is it now considered too bad taste? Who knows...

Malcolm Young was fondly remembered by the crowd, who started chants of "Malcolm! Malcolm!" instead of the usual "Angus! Angus!" from time to time, but no mention was made by the band - in fact we got no banter from Brian at all. Stevie Young filled in his uncle's place effectively, but the show has always been about Angus and Brian, so it didn't have a significant effect. Chris Slade did a solid job on the drums, and was probably quite happy that Phil Rudd's dubious legal problems gave him a chance to re-join the band.

Will this be the last big AC/DC tour? Time will tell. It's been a while since the last one, and many would never have expected the band would continue without Malcolm. But Angus still struts around with amazing energy for a 60-year-old, and there will always be an audience for them, so he may not be hanging up his schoolboy cap quite yet.

It was wet, very wet. Hives had done there job and done it well. The stage was set and with a surreal video, lighting system, pyrotechnics and a sound system dreams are made of, the show began ...

"Ahh Sydney, good to be back" Brian sighed almost longingly as he moved into 'Rock or Bust' as the rain drizzled onstage. Between each song, a quick retreat to wipe faces, hands and fretboards, roadies wiping the stage, one knew they were up against it especially when Angus took off his now soaked coat, donned only in a white soggy shirt and shorts being somewhat careful in his customary shuffle along the stage, but shuffle he did, no quarter was given.

Wet hair flicking water everywhere as Angus took to the long stage extension, now raised for 'Let There Be Rock' and an extended lead solo as bluesy and crisp as it gets by Angus duck-walking onto the podium, raised even higher with another blistering lead break while spinning around "Curly" style as the crowd, horns held high, called for more!

Cliff Williams as solid as ever pounded the Bass while drummer Chris Slade was unrelenting, not missing a beat. Stevie Young at home on Rhythm Guitar, deep in concentration, a fitting and honourable replacement for Malcolm.

Nothing replaces years of committed touring and AC/DC are the epitome of hard work and a lifelong dedication to their craft.

AC/DC has been around just about forever, sold tens of millions of albums worldwide, and won a dozen awards, so your expectations for a live show should be high. I first saw them at the Tacoma Dome in June, 1988, and wasn't disappointed.

Seeing AC/DC live back then was like being hit by a steamroller. And it's the same if you see them today – the crowd at an AC/DC show these days is a mix of young and older fans, but we're all rocking out together. Once they start, they blast through hit after hit, and you know when they play "Let There Be Rock" it sets the tone for the rest of the show.

The floor ends up just being a mass of bodies, cheering and jumping up and down with fists in the air, gaining more energy with every word sung by Brian Johnson - a little guy with a lot of voice. The best songs are always: "Back in Black," "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," "Whole Lotta Rosie," and "It's a Long Way to the Top," all of which I can safely say are awesome live - and they really are.

AC/DC may be getting older but they aren't mellowing. They still put on a great show and sound as good as they did 25 years ago. Their live show is perfect for new and longtime fans alike, so if you get the chance to see them, do yourself a favor and go.

There is not much to say about the Australian rocker with an over-fondness for school attire AC/DC apart from they are considered icons of rock. They show no signs of tiring despite having formed as a band over 40 years ago.

They continue to wow fans all over the globe and pack out their shows with a mixture of dedicated fans who have followed their career from the offset to the new-age fans who have discovered and enjoy their influence on modern rock. Enthusiastic as ever, Angus Young leads the band into an all cannons blazing rendition of 'Rock 'N' Roll Train' which delights the audiences below.

They are not the most enthusiastic of crowds being as the majority of the audience are now reaching their fifties yet the roar of applause at the end of each track is thanks enough. Classics such as 'Hells Bells' and 'High Voltage' are a joy to see performed live whilst the closing anthemic 'Let Their Be Rock' shows the band's dedication to the music.

Perhaps the track everyone wants to see, 'Highway To Hell' is saved for the encore and this song that defined a chapter in rock is just as brilliant as you would imagine.

Some bagged the first gig on the 12th, don't know, I was at Fleetwood Mac. The rain and thunder around the stadium joined the Best Live Rock Band in History on stage. They took Kingswood and the Hives to school... this IS how to Rock 'N' Roll. Angus, Angus had us in the palm of his hand... no one does this like ANGUS, he was his usual, just amazing. Brian, well ok he doesn't hit the high notes and doesn't try, but it's overlooked in his performance, the gravel voice of the new guy, does justice to Bon's songs,so who gives a shit, were all aging a little. AC/DC have been doing this since they made it big with Jailbreak in 1974 and of course that massive leap in 1980 with the New Guy. From the back of a truck to a world wide phenomenon,Let There Be Rock!

The show? Awesome.

From opening video to pryotechnics during the encore, all top notch.

The actual performance was stellar - they still have it. The tempo never dropped.

I loved the amount of location-specific merchandise.

The problem? The seating chart when we bought our extra-pricey-but-totally-worth-it tickets was not what we actually were sitting at. Per the chart, we should have been, floor, front and center between main stage and catwalk. instead, our entire section was moved behind the section that was stage-right, and suddenly, we can't even tell there's a catwalk.

I don't know if this was the tour, the promoters, the venue, but it was a royally dick move - all to sell just a few more tickets.

the performance itself was great, as expected. but there were some side problems.

1- There was just one mentioned time on the tickets, 18:00. Of course it wasn't the time which ACDC comes on stage but it wasn't the door opening time either. We were there around 17:30 and half of the field was already occupied, so we didn't get a proper place. Next time I wish for better information about the door opening time.

2- after the concert, conducting the people to the exit doors was awful. we were standing on our feet for like 45 minutes without moving a single step. I don't know what was happening in the front but that situation was tiring and also very dangerous.

Between 1976 and 1980 AC/DC recorded a bunch of albums that will remain among the greatest ever made. The band are a lot older now but they play these classic tunes flawlessly.

The band continued without a blip when they lost their singer in 1980 and they've done it again. Axl Rose was an unexpected choice to stand in for Brian Johnson but despite my suspicion he sang brilliantly.

And then there's Angus Young. This is his band and his show and he is a truly amazing entertainer.

You know what you're gonna get from an AC/DC show - no nonsense rock'n'roll but these songs are so good. Rock shows just don't get better than this.

Tickets for the North American dates will go on sale during the weekend of September 20 via Ticketmaster and ACDC.com .

Following the North American run, AC/DC will visit South American, Europe and Asia, with dates to be announced.

AC/DC 's first new single in eight years, "Rock 'N Roll Train" , hit the band's web site and radio stations on August 28. A video for the song was shot in London and will premiere later this month. "Rock 'N' Roll Train" is classic AC/DC from start to finish, with bluesy riffs, a rock-solid tempo and a scorching solo from Angus Young .

According to a posting on the unofficial AC/DC web site AC/DC Highway To Hell , a limited-edition "deluxe edition" version of AC/DC 's new "Black Ice" will include a blue AC/DC logo and will be packaged in a special hardcover package. It will also come with a 30-page expanded booklet with exclusive new illustrations, studio and live photographs of AC/DC .

ACDC.com has started a brand new feature called "AC/DC 101" which can be found here . This new feature will give you an in-depth look of AC/DC 's history decade by decade, and also offers a cool new widget which will have "On This Day" AC/DC news of events that happened through the band's career.

"Black Ice" , the band's first studio album in eight years, will arrive on October 20 and will sold exclusively at Wal-Mart , Sam's Club and ACDC.com in the U.S. All three plan multiple promotional campaigns aimed at the group's millions of fans.

AC/DC was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. The band has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 69 million in the U.S. alone.

"No Bull: The Director's Cut" , a chronicle of the band's famed July 1996 concert at the Plaza De Toros De Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain, was released on DVD and Blu-ray September 9.

AC/DC Announce 2024 World Tour

The rock icons are returning to the road for the first time since 2016

Rock icons AC/DC are returning to the road next year.

Last October, AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage after a seven year hiatus. The band performed after Judas Priest with previously retired bassist Cliff Williams and drummer Matt Laug sitting behind the kit. While they didn’t scratch any songs off  this list , they did debut two tracks from their 2020 album,  Power Up  – “Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark.” The band’s seventeenth studio album, Power Up peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world.

The rest of the set was filled with some of the band’s biggest hits, and several rare gems that haven’t seen the lights of a stage in decades.

AC/DC kicked off their set with their 1979 fan favorite, “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It).” It was the first time the band opened with the song in 20 years. From there, they launched into their massive hit, “Back in Black.” The played “Dog Eat Dog” for the first time with frontman Brian Johnson since 1996, and “Riff Raff” for the first time with Johnson on the mic since 2009. AC/DC played both songs back in 2016 when Axl Rose of fellow Power Trip performers Guns N’ Roses was filling in for Johnson on vocals. Johnson was forced to step away from the band while dealing with hearing loss. Axl played the final 22 shows of AC/DC’s Rock or Bust Tour.

AC/DC also pulled out “Stiff Upper Lip” for the first time since 2003. Other highlights included “Shot Down in Flames,” “Thunderstruck,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Shoot to Thrill,” “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train,” “Highway to Hell,” “Whole Lotta Rosie,” and many more.

This summer, AC/DC are returning to the road for the first since 2016. The massive run is a celebration of the hard rock hitmakers’ 50th anniversary, and their first time supporting their latest album on tour. The global trek begins with a run across Europe this summer, starting at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on 17 May. The Power Up Tour will see the group performing in Spain, Austria, Belgium, France, the UK, and more.

Due to overwhelming demand, second shows have been added in Seville, Spain, Dresden, Germany, and Hannover, Germany.

While bassist Cliff Williams has retired from touring, the band has confirmed that Chris Chaney (ex-Jane’s Addiction, Alanis Morissette) will be joining them on tour. Another alumnus of Alanis’s band – drummer Matt Laug – will once again be performing with AC/DC on the upcoming run of dates. Laug made his debut with AC/DC at Power Trip back in October.

“We are thrilled to finally announce the Power Up European Tour,” AC/DC said. “Angus [Young], Brian [Johnson], Stevie [Young], and Matt [Laug] will be joined by Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff. The tour will see us play shows across Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France & Ireland this Summer. We can’t wait to see you all out there.”

AC/DC’s performance at Power Trip a few months ago saw the band take the stage with frontman Brian Johnson, lead guitarist Angus Young, rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, bassist Cliff Williams, and drummer Matt Laug. In July of 2016, Williams announced that he would be retiring after the completion of the band’s Rock or Bust World Tour. He returned to the fold, however, in 2018 to record bass on the band’s new album, Power Up .

The confirmation of Laug’s involvement with the band for the Power Trip was most likely connected to legal issues stemming from original drummer Phil Rudd’s 2014 arrest. Rudd was charged with attempting to procure the murder of two men, according to New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty Police District representative Kim Perks at the time. He was also charged with threatening to kill, possession of cannabis, and possession of methamphetamine. A day after he was arrested, one of the charges for attempting to procure a murder was dropped. In April of 2015, Rudd pleaded guilty to the remaining charges at the Tauranga District Court (New Zealand). In July of 2015, he was sentenced to eight months of home detention plus a $120,000 USD fine.

Laug is a storied rock music drummer, having done stints with Alice Cooper, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, Slash’s Snakepit, and Alanis Morissette, as previously mentioned.

At the time of his arrest, Rudd had already completed recording drums for AC/DC’s sixteenth studio album,  Rock or Bust , which came out just days later on November 28. Despite Rudd playing on the record, AC/DC recruited former Shogun drummer Bob Richards to fill in for Rudd in two music videos the band shot for the album amid Rudd’s ongoing legal issues at the time. In February of 2015, AC/DC recruited former drummer Chris Slade to play with them at the 57th Annual GRAMMY® Awards. Slade was a member of AC/DC from 1989-1994 and played drums on their 1990 album  The Razor’s Edge . The album hit #2 on the Billboard Top 200 and contains some of the band’s biggest hits. To date, the disc has sold over 5 million copies in the U.S. alone. Slade also appears on the band’s 1992 live effort,  AC/DC Live . Slade would then join the band for their massive Rock or Bust World Tour, which began on May 5 at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Netherlands.

While best known for his stints with AC/DC, Slade has also performed with the likes of Asia, Gary Numan, Manfred Man’s Earth Band, Terra Nova, Bloodstock, David Gilmore, Uriah Heep, Gary Moore, Tom Jones, The Firm, Damage Control, and others.

In 2020, AC/DC released their seventeenth studio album,  Power Up . The record peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and topped the charts in several other countries around the world. Once again, Angus and Malcolm Young’s nephew Stevie Young, who took over rhythm guitar duties for Malcolm after he stepped away from the band in 2014 due to his declining health, played on the record. Malcolm Young passed away back in 2017.

AC/DC Announces 2024 ‘Power Up’ Tour Dates and New Lineup

AC/DC has announced that they will tour Europe this summer with a brand-new lineup.

The 21-date Power Up tour will kick off May 17 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and is scheduled to conclude on Aug. 17 in Dublin, Ireland.

You can see a complete list of tour dates below. Tickets go on sale Feb. 16.

According to the band's X (formerly Twitter) posts, drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams will not be performing at these dates. Lead guitarist Angus Young , singer Brian Johnson and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young will be joined by Matt Laug on drums and former Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney.

Rudd missed AC/DC's 2015-16 Rock or Bust tour due to his well-documented legal troubles . He returned to record 2020's Power Up album but was replaced by Laug at the group's only concert since that time, which took place in October 2023 at the Power Trip festival in Indio, Calif.

Williams announced his retirement after the Rock or Bust tour due to what he described as a bout with " terrible vertigo ," but returned for the recording of Power Up and for the Power Trip performance.

AC/DC Return From Long Layoff

The announcement comes four months after AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage with their performance at the Power Trip festival. The gig marked the Aussie rockers’ first concert since 2016 and brought to an end the longest show-free stretch of the band’s career.

The Power Trip set was also AC/DC’s first performance since the death of founding member Malcolm Young. The rhythm guitarist was replaced by his nephew, Stevie Young, who also played on the group’s 2020 album Power Up .

AC/DC has yet to tour in support of Power Up . The album was recorded in 2018 and 2019, but released in 2020 – right as the COVID-19 pandemic brought the live music industry to a halt. Johnson, who had dealt with severe hearing loss for years, was also testing experimental hearing aid technology. At the time, he was still unsure if he’d be able to perform with AC/DC again, however a handful of successful guest appearances – including a memorable performance at the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert in London – left Johnson confident he could return to touring again.

“I walked out there, the roof lifted up off Wembley and I sang my little heart out,” he recalled of the Hawkins show . “I did two songs and the place went absolutely crackers. I think I floated off. It was absolutely wonderful. So we knew [the hearing aids] worked. We were absolutely jumping for joy at the side of the stage. It was something special.”

What happened when AC/DC arrived in America

AC/DC landed in The US four days after the release of Let There Be Rock, primed for their first North American tour. Nobody knew who they were

Susan Masino's Let There Be Rock: The Story of AC/DC was first published in 2006. It tells the story of Australia's biggest export, gleaned from interviews with the likes of Angus Young, Dave Evans, Keith Emerson and Robin Zander, as well as friends and record company executives.

The book has now been updated to bring the band's story up-to-date, detailing the release of Black Ice and Rock Or Bust, Axl Rose's temporary tenure, and the much-rumoured new album. But in this excerpt we go back to 1977, and the band's arrival in the US.

In June, Angus and Bon appeared on stage with Rose Tattoo at the Bondi Lifesaver. It was time to prepare for their first long-awaited tour of the United States. Let There Be Rock was released in the States on July 23, 1977, just four days before they would play the Amarillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas. 

The album would eventually peak on the Billboard charts at Number 154. Before they left for America, AC/DC played two undercover shows at the Bondi. The first night they used the name The Seedies. The second night they called themselves Dirty Deeds.

In anticipation of their arrival in the States, Atlantic hired a new promotions team to handle the band. The late Perry Cooper’s first assignment with Atlantic was to promote AC/DC. “I was working with Michael Klenfner at Arista Records, who was vice president of promotions. I was director of special projects, but I had a bunch of titles. We spent two years at Arista during the early days, we worked with Barry Manilow, Melissa Manchester, Outlaws, Bay City Rollers, it was wonderful. We had a great time. Then when he got offered this opportunity at Atlantic, he took me with him. We were sent over to Atlantic as a package deal.

“Right after we went to Atlantic, Jerry Greenberg came to Michael one day and said, ‘We’ve got this band from Australia, they’re doing fairly well and we signed them to a long-term contract. But their lyrics are a little risqué and we’re not getting any radio play. So could you guys look them over and see what you can do?’

“So he gave us a kinescope, it was really weird, like a film. It had a cartridge that you put into this machine, and we looked at it. No, actually I looked at it. Michael, who will deny this, told me to look at it because he didn’t give a shit. So I looked at it and saw this guitarist doing a duck walk. And I thought, ‘Well, he’s a little bit copying Chuck Berry ,’ but we should bring them over here and tour them, because they are terrific live. And that’s what we did.”

Once Cooper saw the kinescope of AC/DC live, he went back to Greenberg and convinced Atlantic that the band had potential. His idea was to bring AC/DC over to the States. “So they toured their asses off for two years straight. We just said, ‘When people see them, they will love them!’”

AC/DC landed in the United States on July 27, 1977. Unlike The Beatles , they were able to sneak into the country without being noticed. Just like The Rolling Stones before them, the band got into a used station wagon and embarked on their first tour of the United States. 

The first three American dates AC/DC played were opening for the band Moxy, in Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi, Texas. The band went over very well in the Lone Star State, with Angus exclaiming that Texan people “really know how to party!” On July 30, they played a free concert at the Electric Ballroom in Dallas hosted by radio station K2EW.

From Texas, they drove to Florida... starting the long road that would stretch across two years and later become known as their personal “highway to hell.” Their first date in Gainesville on August 4 was canceled. On August 5 and 6, they co-headlined with REO Speedwagon in West Palm Beach and Jacksonville.

A radio station in Jacksonville programmed four or five of the band’s songs into their play list. AC/DC had been getting paid five hundred dollars a night to play a club, but when they got to Jacksonville with Pat Travers opening, they played in front of 8,000 people at the Coliseum. This coastal city would become one of AC/DC’s strongest American markets.

After playing ‘A Day For The Kids’ – a charity date at the Sportatorium in Hollywood, Florida for radio station WSHE in front of 13,000 people— they made their way into the heartland. Opening for Foreigner and UFO , AC/DC played at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis, Missouri on August 9, and at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas on August 10. 

They appeared at B’Ginnings, a club in Schaumberg, Illinois and opened for Michael Stanley in Cleveland, Ohio. The next two nights AC/DC opened for The Dictators at the Agora in Columbus, before continuing their drive north toward Wisconsin. Bon wrote home to a friend that he “Enjoyed America very much, especially the chicks.”

AC/DC was booked to play a campus bar in downtown Madison on Tuesday, August 16, 1977. Technically the fifteenth date of their first American tour, but actually the fourteenth time they were ever to play here, considering Gainesville had been canceled.

This historic occasion would fall on the same day Elvis Presley was found dead at the age of 42 in his bathroom at Graceland in Memphis. The end of an era for many. And the beginning of a new one for me, considering that on that day, Angus, Malcolm, Bon, Cliff, and Phil arrived to play at the Stone Hearth in Madison, Wisconsin – my hometown. Lucky me!

Four years after releasing their album “Power Up” and a few months after making their first shows in years, AC/DC finally announced a tour to promote the record and celebrate their legacy. It’s their first tour in eight years and so far they have scheduled shows in Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Slovakia, Belgium, France and Ireland. The band announced that the American band The Pretty Reckless will be their opening act on all European tour dates.

But soon more dates might be announced and there is an expectation that they will perform at the famous Brazilian festival Rock In Rio.

Besides Brian Johnson and Angus Young , the tour line-up is formed by Stevie Young (Guitar), Matt Laug (Drums) and Chris Chaney (Bass). The longtime bassist Cliff Williams joined the band for their performance at Power Trip Festival last year but had already announced his retirement a few years ago.

“The tour will see us play shows across Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, England, Slovakia, Belgium, France & Ireland this Summer. We can’t wait to see you all out there,” the band said in an official statement.

The American Tour date announcement comes after a massive year for the band, with them kicking off the 57th annual Grammy Awards, headlining at Coachella, and completing 17 shows in Europe, 14 shows in North America and 11 shows in Australia/New Zealand.

AC/DC Reveals First Tour in Eight Years 

For the first time in eight years, the iconic rockers of AC/DC are returning to the stage.

The group will head out on a tour across Europe and the U.K., kicking things off in Denmark on May 17. The 21-date trek will visit Amsterdam, Vienna, London, and Paris, stopping at venues along the way including Munich’s Olympic Stadium, Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich, and Wasen in Stuttgart before wrapping-up at Dublin’s Croke Park on August 17.

Tickets are available beginning Friday, February 16 via Viagogo .

This marks the group’s first tour since 2016, where Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose had to fill-in for Brian Johnson due to hearing issues. Since that run, former Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney has joined the touring lineup, filling in for longtime member Cliff Williams, who retired from the band. Additionally, drummer Phil Rudd was replaced by drummer Matt Laug.

Chaney and Laug will join Johnson, lead guitarist Angus Young, and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young.

At this time, the group has not announced any dates across North America or South America, though its rumored that they’ll appear at Rock in Rio festival this coming September.

AC/DC last released Power Up in 2020, marking their first release since 2014’s Rock or Bust . The group has consistently released records since they arrived on the scene in the late ’70s, cementing their status in the rock scene with timeless tracks like “Back to Black,” “T.N.T.,” and “Thunderstruck.”

The Pretty Reckless to Support AC/DC on 2024 PWR Up European Tour

Taylor Momsen and the Pretty Reckless will support AC/DC on the "Hells Bells" band's upcoming 2024 European tour . The news was announced on Monday morning (March 25) when AC/DC shared a poster for their first Euro swing in eight years, which will feature the "Only Love Can Save Me Now" band serving as the only opener on all 24 dates of the stadium outing slated to kick off on May 17 at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

"It's f–king AC/DC. That's it," the band says when asked to describe their excitement about hitting the road with the "Dirty Deeds" icons.

AC/DC's first European tour in nearly a decade will find the band playing with a line-up featuring singer Brian Johnson, guitarist Angus Young, rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, drummer Matt Laug and Jane's Addiction bassist Chris Chaney replacing longtime bassist Cliff Williams; Williams retired from the band at the conclusion of their 2016  Rock  or Bust tour, returning to the fold briefly for the 2020  Power Up  album. Johnson was temporarily replaced by Guns ‘N Roses singer Axl Rose in 2016 due to Johnson's battle with hearing loss issues.

The AC/DC tour will hit Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland before touching down at London's Wembley Stadium for a pair of shows on July 3 and 7, then moving on to Germany, Slovakia and Paris and winding down at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland on August 17. The European tour is the first run of gigs since AC/CD's long-awaited return to the stage at last year's all-star hard rock Power Trip Festival in Indio, California.

The final weekend of the National Cherry Blossom Festival brings two of its biggest events: a parade with floats, marching bands, giant balloons and Disney characters on Constitution Avenue NW, and the Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival, with multiple stages of music, dancing and martial arts, as well as food and drink vendors and family activities. Flowers After Hours at the National Gallery of Art

The National Gallery of Art’s popular National Gallery Nights after-hours series returns with a party celebrating “spring and all things floral.” Activities include creating wearable flower art, a blossom scavenger hunt, behind-the-scenes tours, pop-up talks, music by DJ Rustam, and bars serving wine and cocktails. All tickets were distributed in a raffle last week, but more tickets will be given out at the entrance to the East Building beginning at 5:30 p.m. (You don’t need tickets to watch dance performances or artist demonstrations on the Fourth Street plaza.) 6 to 9 p.m. Free; tickets required .

Jigger & Pony pop-up at Allegory

Even cocktail fans who’ve never been to Singapore might have heard of Jigger & Pony . No. 14 on last year’s World’s 50 Best Bars list ? Named best international hotel bar at Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards? The 12-year-old bar is noted for its playful originals and clever twists on the classics — its Velvet Negroni is so named because the staff tweaks the preparation and dilution to create a smoother texture and mouthfeel. Why are we hyping up a bar that’s almost 10,000 miles away? Because Jigger & Pony creative director Uno Jang and senior bartender Gabriel Gan are taking over Allegory, the bar tucked inside the Eaton. The event runs, the bar promises, “until we sell out of cocktails.” 8 p.m. Free admission .

‘Game Show: Chad and Pharrell’ at Shanklin Hall

Last week, after news broke that Chad Hugo was suing Pharrell Williams over the rights to the name “the Neptunes,” D.C. DJ and “Tiny Desk” producer Cuzzin B tweeted , “I can definitely tell the difference btwn a Pharrell beat vs a NEPTUNES beat.” The observation struck a nerve, and 7,000 likes and 227 quote tweets later, Cuzzin B is bringing his thoughts into a physical space. He’s hosting a panel discussion and listening session at Shanklin Hall, discussing the Neptunes’ legacy — together and apart — with DJs and producers Daniel Biltmore, Marc Nfinit and DJ Geena Marie at the Adams Morgan social club. 8 p.m. Free .

‘The Art of the Benshi’ film series at the National Museum of Asian Art

This touring film series stops at the Smithsonian after a run in Brooklyn and before heading to Chicago, Los Angeles and Tokyo. In a five-part series of “benshi” performances, or live orators to silent films, the art form returns more than a century after it began with classic, restored films. Three performers are joined by musicians, who will play new and historical scores. Films include the cult classic “A Page of Madness (Kurutta ichipeiji)” and the earliest surviving Japanese animated film, “The Dull Sword (Namakura gatana).” Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 7 to 10 p.m.; Sunday, 3 to 6 p.m. Free.

WoCo Fest 2024: Evolve at AMP by Strathmore and the Mansion at Strathmore

The three-day WoCo Fest 2024: Evolve celebrates music from female composers at Strathmore with a spate of performances, workshops and discussions. The festivities include Saturday at the Mansion, a day packed with discussions, food trucks and exhibitor booths, geared toward musicians but open to the public as well. (Tickets are pay-what-you-can with a suggested donation of $10.) Pianist Sarah Cahill performs at the end of the day, playing a program based on her “The Future Is Female” album trilogy, showcasing compositions spanning baroque composer Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre and contemporary composer Theresa Wong. Jazz legend Terri Lyne Carrington, a four-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, closes out the festival with a Sunday afternoon show at AMP by Strathmore, a lounge-like club serving food and craft cocktails in North Bethesda’s Pike and Rose neighborhood. Commemorating Abraham Lincoln

One hundred fifty-nine years ago this weekend, Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while watching a play at Ford’s Theatre. The National Park Service and the theater remember our 16th president with events including guided walking tours covering the story of the assassination, the Lincolns’ love of theater in 1860s Washington and medical care the president received . Ford’s Theatre and the Petersen House (“The House Where Lincoln Died”) are open all day Sunday and Monday, with special performances of “One Destiny,” a two-man play about the events of April 14, 1865, on Monday morning . Spring Garden Market at River Farm

River Farm, located on the Potomac River between Old Town Alexandria and Mount Vernon, is a joy to visit at this time of year, but it’s especially nice during the American Horticultural Society’s Spring Garden Market. More than 40 vendors set up to sell native plants, herbs, ceramics, gardening supplies and decor, dog treats, and much more. Beyond stocking up for your yard or windowsill, you can explore the property, which includes 25 acres of formal and wildlife-friendly natural gardens and an indoor art exhibit, or have a picnic overlooking the river. Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. $5 entry for those arriving on foot or bicycle; $20 per car (includes all occupants).

Blossoms and Starlight at Eastern Market

A new Taylor Swift album drops next week, if you hadn’t heard, and we expect there will be plenty of Taylor-themed dance parties and karaoke and trivia in the coming days. (Trivia, in fact, starts Wednesday.) The first event on our calendar is Blossoms and Starlight in Eastern Market’s North Hall. Tunes come from DJ Tony T, a.k.a. Tony Tomelden. He owns the Pug, the H Street bar that’s become ground zero for Swiftie listening parties, so he probably knows a thing or two. There will be a friendship bracelet-making station, though you can also bring your own to trade, and sequined outfits are “highly encouraged.” The event is open to all ages, but adult beverages will be available. Proceeds benefit Eastern Market’s 150th anniversary fund. 6 to 9 p.m. $20-$35 .

National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade

Mickey and Minnie Mouse are the grand marshals of the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, which fills Constitution Avenue with marching bands, giant balloons, floats and entertainment. The Sugarhill Gang, “American Idol” finalist Colin Stough and D.C.’s own Mambo Sauce are among the performers. The route stretches from the National Archives to the Ellipse, and viewing the parade from the sidewalk is free, though grandstand tickets are available for purchase. 10 a.m. to noon. Free; grandstand seats $25-$40.

Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival

The Sakura Matsuri Japanese Street Festival expanded from one day to two in 2022 to celebrate its 60th anniversary, and the Japan-America Society of Washington D.C. is keeping the expanded format, packing Pennsylvania Avenue NW between Third and Seventh streets. The festival includes multiple stages with traditional and modern music; dance and martial arts performances; a J-pop talent competition; a children’s corner; a traditional marketplace; a “Taste of Japan” section with food and drink vendors, as well as beer gardens and sake pavilions; pavilions dedicated to topics such as technology and the regions of Japan; and hands-on cultural exhibits. Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. $15 for one day or $25 for both days; $20 admission on the day of the event. Free for children 12 and younger.

Pink Beats at National Landing’s Water Park

Pink Beats, the final installment of the Pink in the Park series at National Landing’s Water Park, is essentially a local music festival, starring the wonderfully crafted indie soul of Oh He Dead, the dance-floor-friendly R&B grooves of Wrizzards and the tuneful pop-rock of Broke Royals. Beyond the five acts performing, there are food and drink vendors and other activities. 4 to 9 p.m. Free.

‘An Evening With Esther Perel’ at DAR Constitution Hall

Troubled couples rely on therapist Esther Perel to get to the heart of their problems — and the audience of her “Where Should We Begin” podcast listens in, fly-on-the-wall style, to hear her pearls of wisdom. Now Perel is taking her show on the road for a national speaking tour called “An Evening With Esther Perel: The Future of Relationships, Love & Desire.” Get in the room with Perel at DAR Constitution Hall as she discusses how technology has shifted the nature of relationships in 2024 and how we can embrace and retain our humanity. 8 p.m. $103-$675.

Jacqueline Woodson Block Party at the Kennedy Center

A National Book Award winner, four-time Newbery Honor winner, MacArthur fellow — the Kennedy Center’s education artist-in-residence is gifted with the written word. This weekend, you get to see what happens when Jacqueline Woodson throws a party. Inspired by her book “The Year We Learned to Fly,” this day of family-friendly activities includes double Dutch, break dancing and roller skating demonstrations; a stepping performance and workshop with Step Afrika!; chalk drawing and graffiti demos; music from Eastern High School’s Blue and White Marching Machine; and Woodson reading her book with help from musicians Toshi Reagon and Be Steadwell. Food trucks and vendors will be on-site. 1 to 5:30 p.m. Free.

NEA Jazz Masters Tribute Concert at the Kennedy Center

Each year, the National Endowment for the Arts honors America’s jazz greats with the Jazz Masters Fellowships . The 2024 class includes trumpet player Terence Blanchard, saxophonist Gary Bartz, composer and organist Amina Claudine Myers, and journalist, broadcaster and D.C. Jazz Festival Artistic Director Willard Jenkins. All four are honored during this concert at the Kennedy Center’s Eisenhower Theater: Bartz, Blanchard and Myers will perform with their own groups and make remarks; Jenkins is represented with a performance by the African Rhythms Alumni Quintet. The evening concludes with a tribute to D.C.’s own Duke Ellington. While all free advance tickets have been claimed, standby tickets will be available at the box office beginning at 7:15 p.m. The line for standby tickets begins at 5:30. 7:30 p.m. Free .

DC Brau’s 13th anniversary

Washington’s oldest brewery is now a teenager. DC Brau, which released the Public Ale to a thirsty city in April 2011, marks its 13th anniversary with a day-long party at its brewery in Upper Northeast. Look for a special lineup of beers — including the freshly rereleased Citizen Belgian pale ale — and a menu of tacos from Taco Man Fred. The jammy Americana of the Brahman Noodles and the Celtic tunes of the O’McPub Band provide the soundtrack, while Jinx Proof is on-site for souvenir tattoos. 1 to 9 p.m. Free .

All Hat, No Cattle at Jackie Lee’s

Heaven Forbid are D.C.’s hip urban cowboys: a quintet sporting large hats, bolo ties and boots, mixing original two-stepping tunes with covers of Vince Gill or Bobby Bare, all driven by the sultry or mournful sound of pedal steel. They play country songs, but they’re more likely to strike up “Guitars, Cadillacs” than some radio hit about a pickup. After a residency at the now-closed Public Option, Heaven Forbid is moving its monthly All Hat, No Cattle party to Jackie Lee’s in Brightwood, where the bar is taking out tables and chairs to make more room for dancing. The band’s sets begin at 8 and 10 p.m. Free .

Masters Costume and Cocktail Party at Duke’s Grocery Navy Yard

Break out your green jackets, red Nike Dri-Fit polos and camouflage bucket hats: The Masters are back, and Duke’s Grocery is hosting a viewing party and costume contest. Snack on pimento cheese or egg salad sandwiches and sip John Daly cocktails (an Arnold Palmer with added vodka) while watching the tournament on multiple TVs. Prizes for the best dressed include Duke’s-branded Titleist ProV1 golf balls and gift certificates. 3 to 7 p.m. Free .

D.C. Emancipation Day at Freedom Plaza

In April 1862 — more than eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation — Congress passed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed all enslaved people in Washington, compensated their owners and provided funds for them to emigrate if they chose. Since 2005, the city has marked the anniversary with a parade and pomp. Freedom Plaza is again the center of attention, with a parade at 2 p.m.; a concert featuring Ginuwine, Kelly Price, jazzman Marcus Johnson and go-go stalwarts E.U. featuring Sugar Bear at 3 p.m.; and fireworks at 8:30 p.m. 2 p.m. Free.

Pages in the Park at Meridian Hill Park

Grab a book and a picnic for Pages in the Park, where you can spend 30 minutes mingling over a potluck meal before an hour of individual reading time. There’s also a book swap — bring any books you no longer want, and take a new one home. Extras will be donated. The event is hosted in the grassy area at the top of the park. 3 p.m. Free.

‘New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024’ at the National Museum of Women in the Arts

The National Museum of Women in the Arts tapped 28 emerging artists from across the globe for a show based on visions for creating a new world. See their alternative realities in “New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024,” the second major exhibition since NMWA reopened last fall after an extensive renovation. Visitors can tour the new gallery spaces and see seven works created specifically for the museum for its recurring “Women to Watch” exhibition series, including site-specific installations. Through Aug. 11. $16; $13 seniors and D.C. residents; free for ages 21 and younger and visitors with disabilities.

Paws and Petals Yappy Hour at Metrobar

One of the final events of cherry blossom season is this dog-friendly afternoon hang in Metrobar’s beer garden. Bring your four-legged friend for treats like puppuccinos and dog beers, while humans peruse vendors selling dog toys and merchandise, grab snacks from food trucks, and groove to a DJ. 1 to 4 p.m. Free .

Mezcal Night at Bar Charley

The Dupont Circle joint is partnering with Columbia Heights taqueria El Chucho and mezcal brand Siete Misterios for an evening dedicated to the spirit. Instead of usual Bar Charley fare, the ticket price will get you chips and salsa, a mezcal flight, and the first cocktail. 5 p.m. $30.

‘Selena’ Movie Night at Rhizome

Takoma Park nonprofit community space Rhizome hosts a free screening of the 1990s classic film “Selena,” complete with themed snacks. Free popcorn and Mexican hot chocolate will be on offer during the biopic of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, the queen of Tejano music, which is screened the night before the late singer’s birthday. 7:30 p.m. Free; RSVP encouraged.

Witches Night Party at Dew Drop Inn

Walpurgis Night, the eighth-century celebration of Saint Walpurga held at the end of April, traditionally aimed to banish witchcraft — but Dew Drop is opening its doors to welcome them. Expect a “simple witchy ritual,” magic-themed drinks, tarot readings by Skye Miranda, astrology analysis and a drag performance by self-proclaimed “slasher flick rocker chick” Jane Saw. You can also make your own temporary tattoo — just make sure it complements your witch-inspired outfit. 7 p.m. Free.

De La Senne beer tasting at the Sovereign

De La Senne is one of the most acclaimed craft brewers in Brussels, and the beers that regularly make it to this side of the Atlantic are flavorful — no filtering or pasteurization — and on the lower end of the alcohol spectrum, such as the bitter, hoppy blonde Taras Boulba or the dry, citrusy Zinnebir pale ale. De La Senne’s beers are regulars on tap on the Sovereign, but this is a special night at the Georgetown Belgian beer bar: Brewery co-founder Yvan de Baets is visiting, bringing what the Sovereign calls “hyper-fresh” kegs of beer, plus rare bottles of Saison de la Senne and Wadesa #9 tripel, complex beers blended with lambic ales from Brussels neighbors Cantillon. Tickets include four-ounce pours of eight De La Senne beers and the talk with de Baets. 6 to 9 p.m. $50 .
