Stat leaders | Who topped the charts on the DP World Tour in the 2022-23 season?

With the final tournament of the calendar year on the DP World Tour in the rear view mirror, we review the statistics from the 2022-23 season.

As a 46-event campaign, spanning five continents, reached its climax at the DP World Tour Championship last month, Rory McIlroy celebrated his fifth Race to Dubai title.

It was reward for an incredibly consistent campaign by the Northern Irishman as he won two Rolex Series titles and registered five further top tens, including a runner-up finish at the U.S. Open.

As a result, he will be high up in the thoughts of many for the Seve Ballesteros Award, where professionals on the Tour vote for their Player of the Year.

But he was by no means the only player to impress during the season, which saw 18 first-time winners, while Adrian Meronk had the most wins with three.

Let's take a look at some of the statistical leaders on the DP World Tour for the 2022-23 season. Some will seem obvious, but others might prove surprising.

Driving distance*

(*The average number of yards per drive, measured on two shots per round)

Wilco Nienaber regained the driving distance title he lost to McIlroy in 2022 as he averaged 332.10 yards. That's practically seven yards longer than the next player on the list, Niklas Nørgaard (325.13).

When compared to the field average, South Africa's Nienaber hit the ball 26.37 yards further.

There were 103 players who averaged more than 300 yards.

Wilco Nienaber-1735203643

Driving accuracy*

(*The percentage of fairways found per round)

Nienaber may have topped the driving distance charts, but he was 172nd in driving accuracy.

It was Adrian Otaegui who led the way in this category, hitting 71.29% of fairways during the season. David Horsey was the only other player to be over 70% for the campaign.

In fact, there were four Englishmen in the top ten on this list - the most of any country - with Nathan Kimsey (third), Tommy Fleetwood (fourth) and Daniel Brown (seventh) also faring favourably.

Adrian Otaegui-1808995670

Greens in regulation*

(*The percentage of greens hit in regulation per round, i.e. one for par threes, two for par fours, three for par fives)

Long viewed as a pivotal attribute for any player, Ross Fisher was indebted to his approach play as he just kept his full playing privileges on the number.

The Englishman, a five-time winner on Tour, led the way in GIR at 74.31%. He finished ahead of countrymen Fleetwood (74.19), Jordan Smith (73.86), Tyrrell Hatton (73.33), and Paraguay's Fabrizio Zanotti (73.08).

There were 25 players who finished the season with an average of 70% or more.

ross Fisher-1489159749

Scoring average*

(*The average number of strokes taken per round)

McIlroy stood about above the crowd in this regard, posting 68.88 for the season. He was the only player to finish sub-69.

His Ryder Cup teammate Nicolai Højgaard, winner of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, was the next best with 69.44.

Worth noting, that Højgaard achieved his scoring average having played 66 rounds, almost double McIlroy's 34.

Matt Fitzpatrick (69.52), Tom Kim (69.53) and Matt Wallace (69.55) made up the top five.

Putting average*

(*The average number of putts taken per green in regulation)

Kim and McIlroy both finished the campaign level pegging here, both posting an average of 1.70. Kim achieved his mark over four fewer rounds.

Gavin Green, Hatton and Jeff Winther were right behind as they rounded out the top five.

McIlroy also led the way for Putts per Round, with an average of 27.83.

Green was first in SG: Putting at 0.99.

Most Eagles

Hennie du Plessis led the way with 27 eagles, a remarkable seven more than the next best by Richard Mansell and Marcel Siem.

There were 178 players who made one eagle or more across the season.

Most birdies

Jorge Campillo registered a mammoth 457 birdies, two more than England's Brown, a fellow winner on Tour last season.

Siem (439), Tom McKibbin (431) and Nørgaard (425) round out the top five.

When it comes to Birdies Per Round, that category was topped by McIlroy and Nicolai Højgaard with 4.47.

Jorge Campillo

Scrambling*

( *The average frequency, as a percentage, of a player scoring par or better on holes where they missed the GIR )

Fleetwood led this classification at 67.36%. At the end of the 2021-22 season, he was 24th at 60.78 highlighting the improvement he made.

Kim (67.31) was second to Fleetwood, while Matt Fitzpatrick (66.67) was third.

In terms of scrambles over the campaign, Campillo made a season-high of 389.

Tommy Fleetwood-1798491755

As mentioned earlier, Meronk won titles on three occasions during the season.

Behind him, there were five players – Ockie Strydom, Pablo Larrazábal, Thriston Lawrence, Vincent Norrman, and McIlroy – with two wins each.

With Rahm, Fitzpatrick, McIlroy in contention, DP World Tour Championship sets up for a dramatic Sunday finish

With a Saturday 65, Jon Rahm holds a one-stroke lead in a tournament that he's won twice in three previous starts.

Andrew Redington

DUBAI, U.A.E. — This is a script that requires no editing, but definitely some clarification.

With one round to play in the DP World Tour Championship, the class in the field has risen inexorably to the top of the leader board. World No. 5 Jon Rahm leads at 15 under par after three circuits of the Greg Norman-designed Earth Course at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. One shot back is U.S. Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick . European Ryder Cup player Alex Noren is third on 13 under, one ahead of World No. 1 Rory McIlroy , who is tied with Tyrrell Hatton . Last week’s winner, Tommy Fleetwood , is next, T-6 alongside the impressive Pole, Adrian Meronk .

Given all of the above, that the man who emerges as the champion at the DP World’s season-ending climax will earn around 15 World Ranking points less than the winner of the PGA Tour’s relatively star-less RSM Classic does seem a little odd. But we digress.

MORE: Jon Rahm blasts new World Ranking formula as ‘laughable’

While getting to an eventual result of this tournament will be relatively straightforward, the same cannot be said of the race to be crowned European No. 1 for 2022. As things stand after 54 holes, that title will go to McIlroy, the leader heading into the week. With Fitzpatrick in second place, the Northern Irishman’s current slot at T-4 is good enough to edge out the Englishman. Indeed, should Fitzpatrick not win the tournament, any finish seventh or better will be sufficient to give McIlroy his third win on what was once the “Order of Merit,” then became the “Race to Dubai” and is now the “DP World Tour Rankings.”

There are a couple of other, but much more unlikely, scenarios in play. Should Meronk or Fleetwood come from behind to win the tournament, both would put themselves in with a chance of a rankings victory. Meronk also would need McIlroy to slump to a spot outside the top 16 and Fitzpatrick to drop out of the top two. Technically at least, the possibility of a Fleetwood double is more likely. He would require a win for himself and a Fitzpatrick finish outside the top-three on Sunday.

Still with me?

Save for Hatton, who played the back nine in a disappointing 39 en route to an eventually pedestrian level-par 72, what just about every contender had in common was a feeling of pleasure at a third round well played, as well as excitement at the possibilities ahead.

Rahm first. In three previous appearances in this event, the burly Spaniard has two wins and a tie for fourth. So, one day on from his second round 66, his 65 on a course where he averages 67.5 was hardly a surprise.

“I don't think I could have shot any lower today,” said Rahm after his bogey-free outing. “I maximized the round. Wasn't at my best off the tee, but I was able to get some birdies out of some not-so-good situations. I didn't hit any of the fairways on the par 5s and still played them three under par. I'm hoping tomorrow I can be a little better off the tee, and still keep the good iron play and good putting going. As for why I play so well here, I hope I never find out so that I just keep coming here with a good vibe. The second you know, it's gone.”

MORE: Rory McIlroy says for truce with LIV Golf, ‘Greg [Norman] needs to go’

McIlroy was making equally positive noises after his own 65. Seven birdies and an eagle dotted his card, offset only by two bogeys in the opening three holes. Only one under par through 33 holes, the four-time major champion has gone 11 under for the next 21 in his quest to become only the second man (after Henrik Stenson in 2013) to win the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the DP World Tour rankings in the same season.

1442752826

Rory McIlroy played the first 33 holes of the DP World Tour Championship one under par and the next 21 at 11 under.

David Cannon

“I hit it in the fairway a bit more today, which made a big difference,” McIlroy said. “I was able to get control of my approach shots and hit them close and make some easy birdies. I thought that last three holes yesterday [ birdie-birdie-eagle ] could really kickstart a little bit of momentum for me, and I brought that into today. I've played so well on this course over the years. I know how to shoot low scores and I know how to make birdies. It was just a matter of getting it out of myself.

“I am excited to put myself in the mix,” he continued. “Tomorrow is a big day. I just have to go out there and try to shoot another good score. There is some of it outside my control, but if I can play a good round of golf, that makes it a bit easier.”

Easier, but hardly easy. Not considering this leader board.

2022 DP World Tour Championship leaderboard: Jon Rahm makes his move to hold slim lead over Matt Fitzpatrick

Members of the european ryder cup team will duke it out in the final round for the season-long crown.

dp world tour rankings golf

For the first time all week, a new man occupies the top spot on the leaderboard of the 2022 DP World Tour Championship. Former world No. 1 Jon Rahm was simply brilliant around Jumeirah Golf Estates on Saturday en route to his bogey-free 7-under 65. Carding seven birdies for the second consecutive day, the Spaniard has slowly meandered his way to 15 under and possesses a one-stroke lead over Matt Fitzpatrick.

With four birdies in his opening eight holes, a moment of unease arose on the difficult par-4 ninth. Making bogey on this hole the first two days, Rahm was forced to chip out of trouble before converting a momentum-saving par putt from just inside 15 feet. Adding three birdies on his inward half, Rahm has now positioned himself to become the first man to win the DP World Tour Championship three times.

"I don't think I could have shot any lower today," Rahm said. "Maximized the round. Wasn't my best off the tee but I was able to actually get some birdies out of some not so good situations. I didn't hit any of the fairways on the par fives and still played them three-under par. I'm hoping come tomorrow I can be a little better off the tee, and still keep the good iron play and good putting going."

First-round leader and 36-hole leader Fitzpatrick will be sure to apply some pressure as the Englishman battles for both the DP World Tour Championship and the season-long race. At 14 under, he is in the precarious position of trailing not only Rahm, but also Rory McIlroy as the world No. 1 is projected to win the Harry Vardon Trophy after his round of 7-under 65.

"Something I've learnt massively this year is to be more patient," Fitzpatrick said. "I'm not the best at it. I've got so much better, probably, since being told off by Billy [Foster, his caddie] in April. So I think that's been a big thing that's come on for me is just being patient and knowing that I'm playing some good golf. I feel really comfortable with my irons this week, and that's been a big, big change and a big step forward over the last few months. So, I'm looking forward going into tomorrow.

"It would mean the world [to win the DP World Tour Rankings]. I'm going to need a lot of things go my way," Fitzpatrick added. "I feel like this...could be a third win here, and if it happens, it could be all three times I've not won [the DP World Tour Rankings]."

McIlroy began his second round in a volatile fashion as two bogeys sandwiched an eagle in his first three holes. Making birdie on seven of his final 14 holes, the Northern Irishman has returned to the pole position in the season-long race ahead of the final 18 holes. McIlroy will attempt to join Henrik Stenson as the only men to win both the DP World Tour and PGA Tour season-long titles in the same year.

DP World Tour Rankings up in the air heading into final day

Coming into the week, only seven players were able to win the DP World Tour Rankings. Through three rounds, this number has likely whittled down to only two as Fitzpatrick and McIlroy vie for the season-long crown. After commanding the lead the first two days, Fitzpatrick was projected to claim the title, but the four-time major champion has battled back with a vengeance courtesy of rounds of 68-65. Here are the scenarios for each player heading into the pivotal final round.

  • Rory McIlroy : If he wins or finishes ahead of the other six, he wins the season-long race
  • Matt Fitzpatrick : Has to finish in top two and have McIlroy finish worse than seventh

"It's really cool, I've got to this stage in the game over 15 years as a pro, and I'm still trying to do things for the first time," McIlroy said. "I've never won the FedExCup and this tour's rankings in the same year, so it would be really nice. It's been a wonderful year. I've played some really, really great golf and really consistent golf. If I'm able to go out there tomorrow and shoot a good score and get the job done, it would be a really nice way to end what's been a great year."

2022 DP World Tour Championship updated odds and picks

  • Jon Rahm: 11/10
  • Matt Fitzpatrick: 14/5
  • Rory McIlroy: 9/2
  • Alex Noren: 9-1
  • Tyrrell Hatton: 12-1

This is reminiscent of the old Tour Championship on the PGA Tour for those unfamiliar with the DP World Tour Rankings. Rahm, Noren and Hatton have no chance to win the season-long crown while Fitzpatrick and McIlroy will shoulder the pressure of trying to claim victory in both the tournament at hand and the DP World Tour Rankings. With these odds applying strictly to the DP World Tour Championship, Rahm looks to be the fairest price and will remain our selection to win.

DP World Tour Standings 2021

Sami Välimäki moves into the top 10 of the Race to Dubai Rankings – PGA TOUR Eligibility ranking

Sami Välimäki moves into the top 10 of the Race to Dubai Rankings – PGA TOUR Eligibility ranking

Change Text Size

Following a Sunday win on the DP World Tour, Sami Välimäki has moved into the top 10 of the Race to Dubai Rankings – PGA TOUR Eligibility ranking.

Välimäki, the 2020 DP World Tour Rookie of the Year, won the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters with a birdie on the first playoff hole against Jorge Campillo. Välimäki shot a final-round 69 to overcome a one-shot deficit entering the day. Välimäki is now fifth in the Race to Dubai Rankings – PGA TOUR Eligibility ranking and poised to earn a PGA TOUR card for 2024. It marked his first win of the season. Välimäki, 25, has finished runner-up twice this season.

This is the first year the top 10 in the Race to Dubai who are not yet exempt on the PGA TOUR will earn PGA TOUR cards for the following season. The No. 1 player will be fully exempt in 2024 and earn a spot in THE PLAYERS Championship.

The top four in the Race to Dubai Rankings – PGA TOUR Eligibility ranking is unchanged. Adrian Meronk holds a narrow two-point lead over Ryan Fox at No. 1. Victor Perez is third, followed by Min Woo Lee and Välimäki.

Robert MacIntyre maintained his spot at No. 6 with a T6 finish in Qatar. Alexander Björk is ranked seventh, with Campillo’s runner-up finish moving him inside the top 10. Campillo, a first-team All-American at Indiana in 2008 and 2009, jumped from No. 17 to No. 8 with the performance. Campillo, 37, won the Magical Kenya Open Presented by Absa in March.

Thorbjørn Olesen and Ryo Hisatsune round out the top 10. Olesen dropped one spot in the rankings despite a T9 finish. Hisatsune dropped from seventh to 10th after finishing T21.

Lee’s position inside the top 10 opens up another potential PGA TOUR card. The Australian, who has top-10s at this year’s U.S. Open and THE PLAYERS, is on the verge of earning his TOUR card via nonmember FedExCup points.

Joost Luiten ranks 11th, eight points ahead of Yannik Paul. Rasmus Højgaard is 15th in the standings. His twin brother Nicolai, who played on this year’s European Ryder Cup team, is in line to earn a TOUR card via non-member points, as well. His 466 points would currently rank 108th in the FedExCup Fall standings.

The DP World Tour is off this week ahead of its final two events, which boast bigger purses and increased points as playoff events. The Nedbank Golf Challenge is hosted in South Africa before the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
