Enjoy free or cheap money transfers to 50 countries.

Travelex is a globally recognized provider of foreign currency services. As part of its services, Travelex International Payments allows customers to send money overseas to 50 countries. With more than 45 currencies supported and a simple online transfer process, Travelex allows you to send funds to your intended recipient on the other side of the world.

In addition, if you transfer an amount larger than $5,000 you will not have to pay any transfer fee, which, combined with Travelex’s competitive exchange rates, helps make international money transfers more affordable.

  • Home delivery available in select countries.
  • Some 45 currencies available.
  • Trusted, globally recognized brand.

Our Verdict

Travelex might not offer the mid-market exchange rate for your overseas money transfer but you’ll always get real-time rates and see any fees that apply upfront. This makes Travelex a strong contender for your online and in-store money transfers where you can make use of spot, forward and option contracts. Transfers can be delivered within two days and can be sent to your recipient’s bank account or debit card. Cash pick-up is only available in the Philippines .

Although never hidden, rates and fees do vary. For example, from Australia, you can benefit from zero fees on online transfers. While in the UK, you’ll pay at least 3% of the amount you send online.

Get money overseas from the convenience of your home

Send money overseas without making a trip to the bank. Transfers start at $500, and Travelex’s Price Promise guarantees that you get the best exchange rate possible. Travelex supports 45-plus currencies and makes transfers to 50 different countries.

  • Multiple transfer options. You can make spot contract, forward contracts, limit orders and recurring payments.
  • Bank-to-bank. Travelex supports only bank-to-bank transfers. Your recipient cannot pick up cash.
  • Not in a hurry. Because you first have to wait for Travelex to receive your funds before they can transfer the money to you recipient, it’s not the speediest process.

Compare money transfer services now

How much does it cost to send money with Travelex?

Travelex is so confident about its competitive rates, it challenges you to find a better price anywhere within 30 minutes — and they’ll beat it. Its standard transfer fee is $5 for transactions below $5,000 with a minimum transfer of $500. Better yet, transactions above $5,000 are free. Compare that to US banks, which charge between $25 to $30 for similar transfers.

  • Exchange rates

As a specialist provider of a wide range of foreign currency services, Travelex is typically able to offer better exchange rates than those you’d find at most banks. Whenever you want to send money overseas, you’ll receive a display of the relevant live exchange rate, allowing you to calculate the amount of money that will arrive in your recipient’s bank account in their local currency.

What types of transfers can I make with Travelex?

Travelex allows you to transfer funds into your International Payments account via electronic funds transfer. You can then transfer money into bank accounts all around the world. The following options are available for sending your funds:

  • One-off transfers
  • Forward contracts
  • Limit orders
  • Regular scheduled transfers

Minimum transfer amount and available countries

In order to send money overseas using the Travelex International Payments service, you’ll need to transfer an amount of at least $500. You can send your funds in more than 45 currencies to 50 countries; however, there are certain destinations to which Travelex will not transfer funds.

These blocked countries include:

  • Afghanistan
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Republic of Congo
  • Cote d’Ivoire
  • North Korea
  • Sierra Leone

Pros and cons of using Travelex

  • Multiple currencies. Travelex supports international money transfers in more than 45 currencies.
  • Fee-free transfers. Send more than $5,000 in one transaction and you won’t have to pay any fees. Even if you send less than $5,000, a flat fee of just $5 is still a manageable expense.
  • No cash. Travelex does not allow you to pay for your transaction in cash, and your recipient is not able to collect the cash you send from a Travelex agent in person.

  • Your contact and banking information. Include the account number and security information for the account you’re transferring from.

The registration and transfer process

You’ll need to sign up for a Travelex account before you can transfer any funds. Registration can be completed online, which involves a simple process of providing your name, email address, country of residence and money transfer requirements.

Once you’ve registered you can transfer funds into your Travelex account via electronic funds transfer, and then you can start sending money overseas. You’ll need to provide details about how much money you wish to send, where you’re sending it and who you’re sending it to (including your recipient’s full name and bank account details).

You can find a list of delivery times on Travelex’s website.

If there’s any delay, contact customer services at 877-414-6359 or [email protected] .

Is Travelex US legitimate and safe?

4.5 / 5 star rating on trustpilot.

Yes. Travelex is the largest travel money exchange service in the world , and it has been in existence since 1976, over 40 years. Travelex processes over 5,000 transactions every hour and services 40 million customers a year. You can find Travelex shops and kiosks in many countries and over 1,000 locations. Travelex is rated by the Better Business Bureau at an A+.

Travelex also scores well with its customers. According to Trustpilot, Travelex US scores an average of 4.5 out of 5, with 86 percent of reviews saying they are “Excellent” or “Good” and 8 percent saying they are “poor” or “bad.”

Travelex is fully regulated and the website uses strong encryption technology to keep your identity, transactions, and money safe. Travelex also partners with other businesses including some popular US banks, the American Automobile Association (AAA), and Mastercard.

How fast is Travelex in the USA?

If you’re exchanging travel money at a kiosk or counter, you can get most of the popular currencies immediately.

If you order home delivery, you can expect to receive your currency in two to three working days. Not bad.

How much does it cost to exchange money with Travelex?

For online transactions through the Travelex website, the only fees you will pay are hidden in the exchange rate you get. These hidden charges can be very expensive, upwards of eight percent of the total amount you’re exchanging. It’s possible that if you choose to exchange dollars or another currency at a Travelex kiosk or counter that you might be charged a service fee, which will reduce how much you get of a foreign currency.

If you order home delivery for your currency, you will need to pay a fee if you order less than $1,000.

Travelex US online exchange rates

The main concern we have with Travelex is how much it charges to exchange travel money. You could end up paying around nine percent of the total amount you’re converting in exchange rate fees, which is not great. This means if you’re exchanging $1,000 for travel to another country, you could pay up to $90 in hidden charges. It’s a bit of a rip-off!

Let’s look at a few examples.

Exchanging US dollars to euros

If you’re traveling to Europe, you’ll want to convert USD to EUR. Here’s how Travelex stacks up.

The base, midmarket exchange rate* is 1 USD to 0.909 EUR.

The Travelex website offers a rate of 1 USD to 0.829 EUR.

Exchange 500 USD to EUR

If you’re exchanging 500 USD, you would get 414.75 EUR with Travelex, compared to 454.50 at the base exchange rate. That’s about $44 more expensive, around 9 percent of the dollars you’re converting.

Exchange 2,000 USD to EUR

If you’re exchanging 2,000 USD, you would get 1,659 EUR with Travelex, compared to 1817.20 EUR at the base exchange rate. That’s about $175 more expensive, around 9 percent of the dollars you’re converting.

Exchanging US dollars to British pounds

If you’re visiting the UK, you will need to convert USD to GBP. Here’s what it could cost.

The base, midmarket exchange rate* is 1 USD to 0.805 GBP. The Travelex website offers a rate of 1 USD to 0.725 GBP.

Exchange 500 USD to GBP

If you’re exchanging 500 USD, you would get 367.55 GBP with Travelex, compared to 402.68 at the base exchange rate. That’s about $43 more expensive, around 9 percent of the dollars you’re converting.

Exchange 2,000 USD to GBP

If you’re exchanging 2,000 USD, you would get 1,470.20 GBP with Travelex, compared to 1,610.73 GBP at the base exchange rate. That’s about $174 more expensive, around 9 percent of the dollars you’re converting.

Unfortunately, these hidden charges are similar across many currencies including Australian dollars (AUD), Japanese yen (JPY), New Zealand dollars (NZD)and others.

*The midmarket exchange rate is the rate that banks and other financial institutions use to transfer money between themselves. Although it’s unlikely you would get this rate yourself, it’s a useful way to compare exchange rate fees, with many providers charging much lower fees than Travelex.

You can definitely get better exchange rates elsewhere.

How you can pay Travelex

You can pay for your Travelex travel money online through the website by using a debit card or a credit card. If you use a credit card to buy your foreign currency, it’s very likely you’ll be charged a cash advance fee by your credit card provider.

You will also probably need to start paying interest on the cash advance amount immediately and you may be charged at a higher rate. If you are going to use Travelex, we strongly recommend using a debit card instead.

Travelex foreign currency services in the US

Travelex offers a variety of travel money and currency exchange services to people in the United States.

Order foreign travel money on the Travelex US website

Travelex gives you an option to order currency online through the website. It’s a fast and easy process and you can easily pay by debit or credit card.

Pick up currency you’ve ordered online from a Travelex location

When you order through the Travelex US website, you can choose to pick the money up from a local Travelex shop or kiosk, super-handy if you live in a major city or near to an airport.

Have travel money delivered to your home

Travelex can also send travel money directly to your home address. You should receive the money within one to three business days but there is an additional charge for delivery if you order less than $1,000 in currency.

Buy travel money at a Travelex location

You can easily buy money-face-to-face at a Travelex counter or store. These locations keep more popular foreign currencies in stock, so depending on where you’re going, you can get your travel money straightaway. It’s important to note that the exchange rates at Travelex stores are likely to be very poor compared to what you could get elsewhere.

Use a Travelex ATM

Travelex has over 1,000 ATMs around the world. You can use these to withdraw money in popular currencies, although beware of poor exchange rates.

Spend on the Travelex Money Card

Travelex offers a prepaid debit card called the Travelex Money card. You can preload and top up this travel card in dollars or another currency and then spend on it like you would a debit card in other countries. The card is expensive though, charging a 5.5 percent currency exchange fee, which is much higher than other popular cards.

The Travelex Cash Passport

The Travelex Cash Passport is an older product that’s no longer available. You can still log in to Travelex and manage your Cash Passport through the website.

The Travelex mobile app

If you want to manage your money on-the-go, Travelex provides mobile apps for both Apple and Android devices. The app allows users to order cash for delivery or collection and to manage the Travelex Money card, check the card balance, and see recent transactions. The app scores well on Apple’s app store with a review score of 4.7 out of 5. It does not rate highly on the Google Play store, where it only scores 1.5 out of 5.

International money transfer and payment

Travelex allows you to make international transfers and payments through a partnership with OFX , another popular currency exchange company. If you have a Travelex International Payments account, you can use those details to log into OFX and send money overseas to an individual or business bank account.

You just need to login to OFX and follow the instructions. You will need to provide information on the country and currency where you want to send money and the bank account details of the recipient. You can then pay for your transfer and OFX will convert the money and send it.

Selling foreign currency back to Travelex US

Once you’ve completed your trip, you can sell unused banknotes back to Travelex. You will normally get Travelex’s standard exchange rate, which is considerably worse than the midmarket rate. This means you could pay up to nine percent of the amount you’re exchanging when you buy the foreign currency and another nine percent when you sell it!

Travelex store, kiosk, and counter exchange rates

Unfortunately, Travelex does not list its face-to-face exchange rates on the Travelex.com website, and individual locations do not provide exchange rates over the phone. We do know from anecdotal evidence that the rates charged by Travelex counters are more expensive than those offered on the Travelex website. We’ve heard reports that face-to-face rates can account for 10 to 15 percent of the total amount of currency you’re converting.

If you’re exchanging smaller amounts, Travelex may also charge a service fee, which will reduce the amount of currency you get back.

While Travelex is a trusted travel money provider, their fees are among the highest we’ve seen. You can get a much better deal on your travel money by comparing and shopping around. Enjoy your trip!

About Travelex coverage

Travelex insurance plans, what isn’t covered by travelex, how to choose a travelex plan online, which travelex plan is best for me.

Purchasing travel insurance can make a lot of sense when you’re planning a trip, especially since its coverage can reimburse you for unexpected — and sometimes costly — expenses.

Travelex is an insurance provider offering a variety of plans to travelers, including coverage for things like medical expenses, trip delays or issues with your flights. Let’s take a look at Travelex travel insurance, what its policies cover and whether purchasing a plan is the right move for you.

Travelex offers six different policies to travelers. Three of these are focused on comprehensive travel benefits, one is only for post-departure coverage and the other two provide coverage primarily for flight-related incidents.

» Learn more: How much is travel insurance?

Each of Travelex’s plans has different coverage levels, costs and benefits. Let’s take a look at what each plan includes.

Domestic and international trips: Travel Basic, Travel Select and Travel Med

To compare the costs of Travel Basic, Travel Select and Travel Med plans, we generated a quote for a 43-year old traveler from Texas heading to Switzerland for two weeks with a total trip cost of $5,000.

The Travel Basic plan came in at $167 (3.34% of the total trip cost) while the Travel Select plan was $243 (4.86.% of the total trip cost). The Travel Med plan, which only covers expenses incurred after you’ve started your trip, costs $41 (0.82% of the total trip cost).

Let’s take a look at what each plan includes.

Note: Early purchase benefits are available if you purchase the policy within 15 days of making your initial trip payment.

Travel Basic

The Travel Basic plan is pretty comprehensive on its own, though its limits may be a little low depending on where you’re traveling. It’s possible to add on some upgrades:

Rental car insurance.

Accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for flights.

Travel Select

Travelex’s most comprehensive plan includes coverage for your children as well as higher limits for most services. It also includes the ability to add on these options:

Cancel For Any Reason insurance .

Doubled medical insurance limits.

Adventure sports coverage.

Rental car insurance .

AD&D coverage for flights.

Doubled emergency evacuation and repatriation limits.

As of summer 2023, Travel Select also includes unique additional coverage options like:

Organ donating.

Attending childbirth.

School extension.

Cancel for business reasons.

Theft of travel documents.

This option is for travelers who make plans last-minute or who don't need benefits like trip cancellation because they have few prepaid expenses.

While it still provides coverage for unexpected travel situations, its limits are lower than the more robust Travel Basic and Travel Select plans. This plan’s coverage begins on the day you depart for your trip.

The Travel Med plan also allows you to add on rental car coverage if you need it.

Domestic trips: Travel America

Travelex has a United States-specific insurance plan, Travel America, which is valid for a maximum of 14 days. Here’s how coverage for this policy breaks down.

Flight insurance plans: Flight Insure and Flight Insure Plus

If you’re looking for a policy that’ll reimburse you primarily for unexpected flight incidents, the Flight Insure or Flight Insure Plus options may be more your speed.

For these quotes, we used the same 43-year-old Texan heading to Switzerland. The Flight Insure policy came in at $19 (0.38% of the trip cost), while the Flight Insure Plus plan charged $25 (0.5% of the trip cost) for the vacation.

Here are the plan’s benefits and coverage limits.

While many situations are covered by Travelex’s insurance policies, there are some events that aren’t. These include:

Bad weather, including hurricanes if the policy was purchased after the storm was named.

Traveling for the purpose of receiving medical treatment.

Pre-existing medical conditions (unless you purchase a plan with a waiver).

Intentionally-inflicted injuries or suicide.

Psychological disorders.

High-risk or irresponsible behavior, including drug or alcohol use or committing illegal acts.

War, civil unrest and pandemics.

To find the full list of exclusions for your specific policy, be sure to review the plan’s benefits schedule.

» Learn more: 6 common travel insurance myths

With several plans from which to choose — and even more add-on options — it may be overwhelming trying to pick a policy that suits your needs. Here are some recommendations:

For family vacations . The Travel Select plan includes coverage for your children as well as you, which can save you a lot of money if your plans are interrupted.

For short-term domestic travel . The Travel America plan is low-cost and provides comprehensive benefits, including emergency medical coverage.

For moderate coverage and cheap costs . The Flight Insure Plus plan still offers emergency medical, baggage delay and missed connection coverage while charging a bare minimum.

For those without many prepaid expenses. The Travel Med plan is great for those who don’t need trip cancellation protection but still want coverage while traveling.

Travelex may offer a plan that makes sense, but many travel credit cards also offer complimentary travel insurance . Before buying travel insurance, do your due diligence to decide which option is the right move for you.

What You Need to Know About the Capital One Venture X Travel Credit

A key card feature is changing.

A Capital One Travel Credit Has Changed

When you have rewards credit cards, changes to the program are expected.

Some of the links on this site contain offers from our partners .

The offers in this article may be expired or currently unavailable.

Capital One recently informed cardholders who have the Venture X Rewards Credit Card that one of their key benefits has changed. Since the card's launch, cardholders have enjoyed an annual $300 travel credit that was applied as a statement credit after you purchased an eligible travel booking through Capital One Travel.

Going forward, however, there is no more statement credit. Now, users will be able to redeem a $300 discount at the time of purchase.

Find out what this means for cardholders, if there's any real difference and how the new $300 credit will work.

Same $300 Credit, But Applied Differently

Given Venture X's annual fee of $395, the $300 travel credit goes a long way toward offsetting the cost of carrying the card. In the past, cardholders would use their card to book a trip via Capital One Travel costing $300 or more, and then – a statement cycle or two later – they'd receive a statement credit of $300.

Now, instead of waiting for the credit card statement to arrive, you'll apply the $300 credit at the time of booking. So essentially you get a $300 upfront discount.

How the Change Impacts Cardholders

On the surface, not having to wait for your $300 savings sounds great. But it will cost cardholders some rewards dollars, because rewards will not be earned on the credit.

That refers earning 10 points per dollar spent on purchases made through Capital One Travel. Prior to the change, if you booked a trip for $400, you'd earn 4,000 points – which is the equivalent of $40 in rewards – and then you’d get your $300 statement credit soon after.

If you book that same $400 trip now, you'll get an instant $300 discount, meaning you'll only earn rewards on the remaining $100 purchase amount. So instead of 4,000 points, you'll only earn 1,000 – taking your real dollar earnings from $40 to $10.

Basically, the updated terms mean that the card is losing $30 in annual value. With many other benefits, perks and earning opportunities, that may not make a difference to cardholders. For those considering the card, it's up to you to decide if it's a deal breaker.

Ultimately, credit cards have the right to change their program terms and conditions at any time. But in the world of higher-tier travel rewards cards, people take seriously any changes that diminish a card's value. As such, there's been some online chatter along those lines among cardholders alerted about the change.

Capital One's Take

A Capital One spokesperson says, "This change comes from Capital One always listening to its customers and continuing to build a seamless booking experience for them from start to finish. Now that customers receive the annual credit immediately within Capital One Travel, it's easier for them to decide when to apply the credit at their convenience, rather than waiting to receive the statement credit weeks after purchase."

How Travel Credits Work With Other Cards

While some cardholders might be upset about Capital One's updated travel credit policy, other major travel card issuers also don't let you double-dip by earning rewards on travel credit-subsidized purchases.

For example, the Annual Travel Credit offer from American Express is redeemable at the time of purchase when you book travel via American Express Travel, the same way Capital One works now.

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, the $300 travel credit is a statement credit, but the terms specify that no rewards will be earned on purchases that qualify for the credit. What's more, you won't earn bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchases until the $300 credit is exhausted.

The Bottom Line

When you have rewards credit cards, tweaks to the program are par for the course. On the positive side, Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card users no longer have to wait weeks for their travel credit. But the rare opportunity to earn rewards on top of a travel credit purchase is no more.

Reposition the Bearing Housing Cap on top of the Bearing Housing and any Travel Spacers present, making sure to align the through-holes with the threaded holes of the Bearing Housing. Reinstall the two screws, tightening clockwise to 10 in-lb (1.1 Nm) torque with a 2mm hex wrench.

img/help/page1099-96TR/IMG_5300.jpg

Replace any 20wt. Gold oil lost during disassembly (up to 2cc) then thread the Shaft Eyelet clockwise onto the Inner Air Sleeve.  Clean the inner air sleeve with Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free paper towels. Use the X2 air sleeve clamps (PN: 803-01-690) to hold the inner air sleeve while you thread the shaft eyelet clockwise with Knipex pliers or the eyelet torque tool (PN: 398-00-280). Tighten to 180 in-lb (20.3 Nm) torque.

img/help/page1099-96TR/IMG_5307.jpg

Replace any Air Volume Spacers that were present.  Coat the air seals in a thin film of Slick Honey then reinstall the outer air sleeve with the air valve side first. Rotate the outer air sleeve until the tab on the eyelet aligns with the notch in the outer sleeve. Slide the outer air sleeve all the way to the negative air sealhead to engage the air seals. Reinstall the wire retaining ring making sure that it is fully seated in its groove.

img/help/page1099-96TR/IMG_5308.jpg

Attach your shock pump then add air while you slowly cycle your shock through 25% of its travel 10 times as you reach your desired pressure. Reinstall the black air cap.

CBP Announces Trusted Traveler Programs Fee Changes

WASHINGTON – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced today an upcoming fee change for some of its most popular Trusted Traveler Programs (TTP).

On April 2, a final rule was published in the Federal Register , harmonizing the fees for the NEXUS , Global Entry, and SENTRI programs, better reflecting the program costs. The new fees, which have not been updated in over 15 years, will go into effect October 1, 2024. As these programs have matured and expanded, updating the fee structures is critical to the continuation and management of the programs.

Once the rule goes into effect, applicants under the age of 18 will be exempt from the application fee when a parent or legal guardian is already a member of, or concurrently applying for NEXUS, SENTRI, or Global Entry. SENTRI, which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers entering the United States using dedicated primary lanes at Southern land border ports, will move from an “a la carte” fee structure to a uniform fee of $120, which will be collected in full when each application is submitted. The fees for NEXUS, a joint program managed by CBP and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that allows dedicated processing between the U.S. and Canada, will increase from $50 to $120, and Global Entry fees will increase from $100 to $120.

TTP supports CBP’s mission of securing U.S. borders while facilitating lawful travel and trade. Travelers must be pre-approved for TTP. All applicants undergo rigorous and recurring background checks and an in-person interview before enrollment. While a key goal of the programs is to expedite travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. To maintain a strict standard in establishing TTP members as low-risk travelers, any violation of a program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

For more information on TTP, follow @CBP or visit ttp.dhs.gov .

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the comprehensive management, control, and protection of our nation’s borders, combining customs, immigration, border security, and agricultural protection at and between official ports of entry.

Adventure travel series Destination X has been officially picked up to series by NBC .

The show is expected to air on the network in 2025 and the U.S. version of the Belgian format will be produced by production company Twofour , which is also making a separate British version for the BBC.

The BBC greenlit its own version last year with Twofour producing.

It is a similar model employed on breakout mystery format The Traitors.

Destination X sees a group of contestants go on the road trip of a lifetime but they have no idea of their location. In order to win, they must figure out their mystery locations. Once they’re on the blacked-out Destination X bus, the journey turns into a real-life game board, with challenges designed to offer clues as to their location, along with a few misdirects to keep them guessing.

At the end of each episode, the contestant who places an X on a map furthest from the actual location packs their bags. The first participant to reach Destination X will be crowned the winner.

Twofour, which is owned by British broadcaster ITV, is behind series such as Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveller . It will co-produce the NBC version with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Production will begin later this year.

Caroline Davies, Andy Cadman, Dan Adamson and David Clews will exec produce the NBC version.

“ Destination X is one of the most unique and innovative formats we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s so big we partnered with the BBC again to shoot two shows at once,” said Corie Henson, EVP, Unscripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This show is an epic international travel adventure combined with the ultimate guessing game. Even if you’ve never been on a plane, you can play along.”

“The entire Twofour team couldn’t be more proud to have won the tender to produce this incredible adventure format, particularly given the pedigree of the other companies in the process,” said Dan Adamson, Twofour MD. “Our editorial ambition for this project is fortunately matched by our best-in-class production team, who constantly make the impossible possible. We are excited to be on this journey with our talented producing partners at UTAS and grateful to the brilliant commissioning teams at both NBCU and the BBC for the hard work and creativity they have already put into the process.”

When will solar eclipse reach your town? These maps show path's timing, how long it lasts.

Hundreds of cities in 13 u.s. states fall directly on the april 8 eclipse's path of totality as the moon blocks the sun's disc and ushers in darkness. these interactive maps offer a closer look..

travel x change

Come Monday, millions of Americans from Texas to Maine will stop what they're doing to step outside and spend a few minutes gazing skyward .

Few celestial events have the power to capture our collective attention the way this upcoming total solar eclipse has managed to do. And for those making time to witness it, two questions are bound to be on their mind : Will totality reach my area and if so, how long will the resulting darkness last?

Most people across the country are bound to experience the eclipse in some form, but only 13 states fall directly on the path of totality, where the moon will appear large enough to shield all but the sun's outermost layer, the corona.

As you make your eclipse-viewing plans, these interactive maps should help you chart the time and duration for when totality will occur in cities along the path.

Solar eclipse experiment: Here's why NASA is launching 3 sounding rockets into space during the total solar eclipse

Total solar eclipse path of totality map

The 115-mile-wide path of totality will pass from southwest to northeast over portions of Mexico the United States and Canada.

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine.

Remember: If you plan to witness the eclipse, proper eyewear is a must until the eclipse reaches totality, then it can be viewed with the naked eye.

Here's a map of some of the larger cities in each of the 13 states on the path to show how the duration of totality will vary:

Cities, states on the path of totality

All told, nearly 500 cities in 13 U.S. states are located on the eclipse's path of totality. Here are some of the major cities in each of the 13 states:

  • Dallas and San Antonio, Texas
  • Idabel, Oklahoma
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Paducah, Kentucky
  • Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio
  • Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire
  • Caribou, Maine
  • Erie, Pennsylvania

This interactive map provides a closer look at cities along the path, when totality will arrive there and how long totality will last:

Eclipse watch parties, festivals

Such a rare event is sure to attract skygazing tourists unlucky enough to live outside the path of totality. Fortunately, many cities that will experience the total eclipse are planning plenty of festivities for tourists and locals alike.

There's only one week left until the total solar eclipse 2024 is visible across North America! Are you ready?

It turns out a cloudy forecast might not be as bad as you would initially think, as it all depends on the type, thickness and extent of the cloud cover. With so many people flocking to watch the eclipse safety is the top priority. Here we've compiled a couple of guides on How to stay safe during the eclipse and also how to avoid getting stuck in traffic on the big day.

Everyone observing the partial phases of this eclipse — and for those outside the path of totality, that's the entire event — will need to wear solar eclipse glasses while cameras, telescopes and binoculars will need solar filters placed in front of their lenses.

Only those in the path of totality will be able to remove them briefly to see the sun's corona with their naked eyes. Those not in the path of totality must keep them on the entire time. Our how to observe the sun safely guide tells you everything you need to know about safe solar observations.

Solar eclipse glasses are crucial for most to safely observe the eclipse, but with such high demand for the vital piece of kit, fake eclipse glasses are rife. The American Astronomical Society (AAS) is warning people about the risks of counterfeit and knock-off solar glasses so we have come up with a guide to how to check yours are safe .

Kansas Senate rejects education spending plan, change concerning special education funding

TOPEKA, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: The Kansas Senate rejected a proposal for funding K-12 education in the state. The holdup centered around special education and a change in the calculation that opponents said doesn’t include a long-term plan to fully fund special education.

In a 12 to 26 vote, the Senate rejected the proposed budget that fully funded public schools and added $77.5 million for special education. The new funding changed the way the state calculates special education spending.

Kansas Association of School Boards Assistant Executive Director Leah Fliter called this an “accounting gimmick to make it appear as if the legislature is fully funding special education in the out years.”

The move is seen as shifting responsibility from the state to the districts, adding more budget pressures.

“If the state doesn’t adequately fund special education, it’s not adequately funding general education either, “Fliter said.

A plan from Kansas lawmakers to fund public education in the state is nearing the governor’s desk. The measure’s advancement comes as a key deadline concerning special education funding approaches for Kansas lawmakers. As has been the case in recent years, this is again a source of concern for state public education advocates.

The state hasn’t met the required funding for special education in more than a decade. This leaves school districts to cover the costs for special education.

The Kansas House on Thursday afternoon passed the K-12 budget. The bill, next considered by the Senate, meets the constitutionally required funding levels for public education with some increases. It also makes changes in the formula used for determining special education excess costs and requires the use of some local funds.

“It adds more funding, that’s what we want,” said Kansas Representative Kristey Williams, R-Augusta, an author of the package. “It adds about $309 million of constitutional funding, plus $77.5 million included for special ed.”

That boost for special education is a one-time increase. Williams said the change is counting all of the money.

“For those moneys that are raised or generated for special education students, they need to be used for special education students. So we’re codifying what is already happening,” Williams said.

The plan moving through the Kansas legislature specifically centers around the special education components, opposed by many of the state’s public education groups and advocates.

Those in public education who are speaking out say K-12 funding shouldn’t be a fight.

“If there’s an influx of calls and emails saying this isn’t right for students, they need to listen to their constituents,” said United Teachers of Wichita President Katie Warren.

Last year, Fliter said Kansas school districts had to backfill about $400 million in general funds to cover the special education excess costs. The state, by law, is supposed to cover those costs.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

Scroll down to see the list of U.S. cities where the April 8 total solar eclipse will be visible, the duration of the eclipse in those locations and what time totality will begin, according to GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

PHOTO: Tyler Hanson, of Fort Rucker, Ala., watches the sun moments before the total eclipse, Aug. 21, 2017, in Nashville, Tenn.

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

MORE: The surprising reason why a Texas county issued a disaster declaration ahead of April total solar eclipse

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

Eclipse map, path of totality

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
