Rent a boat in

Goboat: be your own captain.

Experience the freedom of sailing with GoBoat, where you are the captain of your own rented boat. Enjoy a few hours with friends, family or colleagues on the water and see the city from a whole new perspective.

We ensure a safe experience in a Danish-designed boat while the city offers beautiful sights. The perfect combination for everyone to enjoy each other's company and "hygge". GoBoat has worked internationally with boat rental and experiences on the water since 2014. In the US we started as Float DC and changed brand in 2023 to GoBoat USA.

The boats sail at a leisurely pace of around 3-4 knots, which equates to 3-5 m/h. Sailing so calmly means you can really focus on the experience. Safety is key. So we teach you how to sail - first online via email and then on site when you arrive (please be there 15 minutes before departure).

Each boat has room for 8 people. So you don't have to sit in a big boat with hundreds of tourists. In the boat you'll find a map to help you get the most out of your trip. We have recommended routes, but you decide where you go!

10 First-Time Boating Tips for New Boaters

boating tips for beginners

If you just bought a new boat or you’re thinking about buying one for the first time, or if you're renting a boat for the day or tagging along on a friend's boat, we have some good news for you: on top of being flat-out fun, research has proven that boating is good for your health and mind . But like any new experience, someone who’s not an experienced boater may have a bit of anxiety over casting off the lines for the first time. Never fear, dear new-to-boating boater—we’re here to help.

first time boating tips for new boaters

Here's some tips that will help ensure your first-time out on a boat is a fun, safe, and rewarding experience.

1. Keep It Safe

You knew that was coming, didn’t you? Boating is actually an incredibly low-risk activity, but like anything, the fun stops abruptly if someone gets hurt. Pay attention as you take your boating safety course , and spend some time perusing our Boating Safety Guide before you shove off the dock.

2. Decide What Activities You Want to Try

With the safety stuff out of the way, prepare yourself to have some serious fun. We mean actually prepare yourself—check out 10 Fun Things to Do on a Boat , and think about which sorts of activities are likely to be embraced by entire family. You might even want to call a family meeting and gather around the kitchen table to discuss all the options.

When you’ve decided on a plan of action, make a list of any boating accessories you may need to be fully prepared for all the grin-generating wave-hops, laughter-inducing tube-towing, and/or smile-causing fish-catching that’s about to come.

Explore Different Boating Activities

3. Check the Weather

Pick your weather carefully. Although we’d all like to go boating each and every time the schedule allows, it is an activity that Mother Nature has a big impact on. If a stiff breeze or thunderstorms are in the forecast, it’s best to keep your powder dry and wait for a better window of opportunity.

See Weather Safety Tips for Boaters , to gain some insight into what does and does not make for good boating conditions.

4. Remember to "Walk Before Your Run"

Ease into the boating lifestyle with short trips that don’t take you too far afield. You don’t need to start off with a long-distance cruise or an overnight camping adventure right off the bat. Most people will be best off if they build up to bigger trips by starting with smaller, shorter ones that help build confidence.

You’ll quickly figure out what sorts of provisions and gear are best to keep on hand, how to respond to different situations that may arise out on the water, and how long the crew enjoys different activities before a change of pace is due. As any parent can probably guess, this is particularly important if you have kids.

owning a boat 101

5. Life Jackets for Everyone!

Pick out life jackets that are comfortable, not because they’re the cheapest option available. Again, this is particularly important if you have kids. Ill-fitting or poorly designed life jackets will grow less and less comfortable as the day wears on, and there are so many types and choices these days that it’s quite easy to find a comfy life jacket for anyone of any size or age. You’re wondering how you’ll figure out which is best? No problem—check out Life Jackets, Vests, & PFDs: How to Choose the Right Fit .

6. Plan Ahead: Use a Pre-Departure Checklist

Plan in some extra time both before and after the trip. When you’re trying something new you don’t want to be rushed, and there will be some set-up time needed to stow the gear, prep the boat for launch , and go through your pre-departure checklist . When you return to the dock, you’ll want to allow extra time for securing the boat, cleaning it up, and washing it down. Keep this in mind as you decide when to start your trip and when you end it, so you don’t end up under any pressure to hurry.

Take Me Fishing also has another great resource to explore, "Use this Checklist Before & After Every Outing."

7. Slow Down for Waves

This may sound a bit simplistic, but the truth of the matter is that after hopping over a few small waves, most new boaters leave the throttle open for larger and larger ones—right up until they hit the one so big that it hurts. Remember that wave impacts are often worse for the passengers than they are for the captain, who is more likely to see the wave coming and be prepared for the impact. So if you’re running the boat and you feel a thump, other people aboard may have felt a slam or a bang.

The solution is quite simple: pull back on the throttle, before the boat hits big waves. Check out our How to Drive a Boat guide , for more info on what to look out for when you’re at the wheel.

How to Drive a Boat

8. Learn How to Adjust the Trim

tips for new boaters

When you get your boat up and running, play with the trim a bit to find the boat’s “sweet spot.” Many inexperienced boaters forget all about trimming, because the boat seems to be running just fine. And it may well be running just fine. Play with the trim, however, and you’ll almost always discover that it could be running even better. Trimming will change how the hull meets the waves, can affect speed and maneuverability, and can make the ride a lot more (or less) comfortable.

Every boat responds a bit differently to trim, so the only way to find that sweet spot is to try changing trim in small increments and seeing how your boat reacts. Read How to Trim a Boat if you’re not entirely sure just how trimming works.

9. Get the Whole Crew Involved

Give kids and crew members jobs. One of the best things about boating, particularly as a family, is that it naturally engenders teamwork. But this only happens when the captain gives everyone aboard the opportunity to lend a hand. Even the youngest crew members can participate if you give them a simple task like helping you watch for flotsam as you cruise. There are plenty of ways to get everyone involved; see A Crew of Kids: Family Team Work for more ideas on what sorts of responsibilities you can assign out.

10. Have Fun—and Don't Forget to Wave!

Have fun, and don’t forget to wave as you pass your fellow lovers of boats. Whether you know it or not, you’ve just joined a new family—the family of boaters. We all share one thing in common, and that’s our passion for boats and boating. So when we see another boat out on the water—any boat —we wave to each other. It’s part of boating etiquette , part of the lifestyle, and part of why we all have such a great time out on the water. Get ready to enjoy it, for yourself!

If you would like more information about a private, chartered dinner, lunch or cocktail cruise, email us here .

Cocktail Cruises Cocktail cruises are also done on a charter basis and catered by any number of Riverwalk restaurants. They can seat a maximum of 30 to 40 guests and can be configured for drinks and appetizers.

Chartered Narrated Tours If you are part of a group coming to San Antonio, there is no better way to see the Riverwalk than with a private, chartered narrated tour. These private narrated tours can seat up to 40 people.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to destinations like the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment, all rolled into one. Some cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. Cruising means seeing the world while unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids and teens -- all for free. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship for you. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with staying at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- all their extras.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their cabins but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors.

Cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes lower. Here's a tip: Many times, the smaller ships from these lines offer the smallest prices.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

Being flexible will get you the best last-minute cruise deals. If you live near a cruise port and can drive, you're probably going to be able to jump on those deals that might pop up a week or two before the ship is set to sail.

If you don't have flexibility with dates and locations, be willing to bend on destination. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise costs on average. When you see it drop, pounce! Many cruise lines update pricing several times every day, so be prepared.

Best cruises in 2020

Part of the appeal of cruising is that there's truly something for everyone. Ships come in an array of sizes, some loaded with so many activities, you couldn't get to them all in a week.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations to which they sail. The Caribbean is a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, also is a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise lines such as Carnival, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, Celebrity, MSC and Holland America for a family cruise.

River cruising has been heating up over the past few years, with itineraries that send passengers down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to even more exotic locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam or the Volga River in Russia. Popular river cruises embark in cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. Popular river cruise lines include Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Scenic, Emerald Waterways, Tauck, Uniworld and Crystal.

If you're a thrill-seeker, consider an expedition cruise. These cruises, often onboard small ships, offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world, including Antarctica, Alaska, Australia and Greenland. Passengers will spend their time kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, Hurtigruten, Ponant and Quark Expeditions.

Luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard smaller ships with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be smaller, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships can't -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, Azamara, Viking Oceans and Silversea.

On my son's worksheet, his non-native teacher wrote: "Let's go for a boat trip." I have only heard "go ON a trip". Has the teacher made a mistake? Many thanks.

chfattouma

It is idiomatic to say "go on a trip". This however does not mean that in certain contexts one couldn't say "Let's go for the trip." meaning " give an affirmative reply to; respond favorably to" (audioenglish.org). 'the' indicates that it is a specified trip that someone may have suggested. In your example however it is ' a trip'. Thus, I think that the teacher meant to say 'go on a trip' but wrote 'for a trip'.

We go on a trip , but we go for a ride . You could say, "Let's go for a boat ride ."

Go for a trip doesn't sound unusual to me.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Florida to Bahamas Boating Guide: Everything You Need to Know

go trip boat

Table of Contents

If you’ve dreamed about a quick one-day trip to the Bahamas, then peer-to-peer (P2P) boat rental might be exactly what you’re looking for.

The Bahamas is a tropical paradise begging to be explored by boat. And from the east coast of Florida, the Bahamas is just 50 miles away. How could you not book a boat rental and cruise on down?

The 600-mile archipelago is made up of over 2,400 islands. That said, The Bahamas isn’t really one destination but rather many smaller groups of islands— the Abacos, Exumas, Berry Islands, Bimini , and more. In this post is everything you need to know for your Florida to Bahamas boat trip.

Best locations to launch from

Best boat type for a florida to bahamas boat trip, best time of year to go to the bahamas.

Discover South Florida boat rentals for your Bahamas trip

If you’re looking to make a trip from the US to the Bahamas by boat, it should come as no surprise the best state to do that from is Florida, given its proximity to the Caribbean. From there, the best jumping-off points are:

  • Fort Lauderdale
  • West Palm Beach

Boating in The Bahamas.

Powerboats can cover the distance to the closest island of Bimini in two hours but the slower the boat, like sailboats , the more planning it takes to cross the Gulf Stream which can be either benign or seriously lumpy and unpleasant.

Make sure you have a weather window before setting out because when the wind from the north meets the current flowing from the south, conditions can be rough. Also, most of the Bahamian waters are quite shallow and full of coral heads so shallow draft boats are your best bet.

The best time of year to visit the Bahamas is mid-December to mid-April. Remember that during hurricane season (June to November), there are no places in the Bahamas to hide from big winds. We strongly recommend planning your boating trip for the December to April window.

Pro Tip: If you’re looking to kick back and relax, browse for boat rentals with captains . All captains on the Boatsetter Captain Network are USCG-certified.

Island highlights

Many people cross to Bimini, rest, and then decide whether to go north to the Sea of Abaco or south to the Berry Islands and Exumas. The Abacos are a compact cruising destination protected from the wrath of the Atlantic Ocean by their outer island structure. They form a sort of saltwater lake where some cruisers hang out nearly the entire winter.

Little Harbor in the south is protected on nearly all sides and is a great place to explore caves or watch jumping rays and surfacing turtles. Farther north is Hope Town with its striped lighthouse and then Man-O-War Cay with a shallow harbor bordered by mangroves. Green Turtle Cay is home to the iconic Dollar Bar and is about as far north as most boaters venture when staying in the Abacos.

A larger territory is to the south in the Exuma Cays, a 37-mile crescent of nearly 400 isles. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park is a great place to snorkel, as are the many sunken airplanes left over from what used to be a busy drug trade in the 1980s.

About 80 miles southeast of the jumping-off point of Nassau is Big Major Cay, with pigs that swim up to your dinghy begging for treats. Thunderball Grotto nearby is a cave you can swim into but be sure to visit in the morning or the late afternoon to skip the crowds.

Boat trip tips

Exuma, Bahamas aerial.

Have an accurate and current weather forecast before setting out. Mild southerly winds minimize the Gulf Stream waves, while a strong, cold northerly front will make the crossing miserable. Always make sure to check for a weather condition known as “The Rage.” This phenomenon is when large swells from the Atlantic Ocean enter the Abacos waters, making everything uncomfortable.

Have the latest charting software in your plotter, but remember that markers and buoys often shift and may not be on station, and keel -grabbing sandbars move continuously. Keep an eye on your depth sounder at all times – these waters are skinny.

When entering a cove or harbor, do so with the sun high in the sky to provide color contrasts that indicate shallows. Have a good pair of eyes scoping the water ahead for coral heads that aren’t charted.

Carry an anchor in your dinghy when snorkeling, and stock up on sunscreen and rash guards because the sun here is unrelenting.

Connectivity is sketchy in the out islands, and WiFi is hard to come by, so either carry a satellite communicator or just be ready to unplug. Most islands are pretty mellow without a lot of nightlife except during festivals and events like junkanoos and regattas.

The bone fishing and snorkeling in the Bahamas are amazing, so bring your gear and your camera because these islands offer some of the most spectacular blue waters anywhere in the world.

Brit tourist, 73, dies from heart attack after jumping into Red Sea to cool off during sightseeing boat trip in Turkey

  • Georgie English , Foreign News Reporter

  • Updated : 13:49 ET, Apr 17 2024

A BRITISH tourist has died from a heart attack moments after he jumped into the Red Sea on a sightseeing boat trip.

The 73-year-old man was with a group of friends in Marmaris, Turkey when he went to cool off in the water and was unable to get back on board as his horrified friends watched as he struggled.

A Brit has died of a heart attack in Turkey after jumping off a boat into the sea

Those on the boat quickly called the emergency services yesterday as they frantically tried all they could to help their pal.

The Brit was pulled from the water by a team of coastguards, cops and divers in two separate boats.

He was rushed to shore where paramedics drastically tried to revive him but was tragically declared dead on the beach moments after he arrived.

His body was transported to the local Marmaris State Hospital morgue.

The forensic medicine institution is now looking into the shock death to determine exactly what caused his heart attack .

Medics believe he could have suffered cold water shock when he entered the water.

The shock can occur when a person faces a rapid drop in temperature as their blood vessels close up and increase blood pressure.

The water in the Red Sea is typically much colder than the 25 degree weather in Turkey at this time of year.

It is estimated that 400 people die from cold water shock related deaths in the UK alone each year.

An FCDO Spokesperson told The Sun: “We are supporting the family of a British national who died in Turkey and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Just last year a 43-year-old Brit also drowned on a family holiday to Turkey after he jumped into a lake to cool off.

Divers reportedly retrieved the man’s lifeless body from 40ft beneath the surface of the lake.

Body found in search for teenager missing in Torres Strait waters

An aerial shot of a stretch of tropical coastline.

A body has been found in the search for a teenager missing in Torres Strait waters after a dinghy broke down overnight.

Queensland police said a 13-year-old boy swam about 500 metres to shore at Saibai Island, about four kilometres south of Papua New Guinea, and raised the alarm.

The boy told police his 16-year-old crewmate attempted to swim but failed to make it to shore in rainy weather.

Police said the identification of the body was underway.

Earlier today, Queensland Police Torres Strait Acting Inspector Anthony Moynihan said the younger boy swam ashore near the airport and went home.

"He's in a bit of shock at the moment," he said.

"He's talking with police up there."

Acting Inspector Moynihan believes the boys were about 500m north of the island when they abandoned the 5m fibreglass "banana boat" – a popular design in the area – after the engine broke down.

Acting Inspector Moynihan, based on Thursday Island, was unsure whether the boat had been found or if there was alternative propulsion aboard.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said conditions on the water in the region were far from ideal after a tropical low formed within a very active trough in the are over the last few days.

He said it looked as if the worst of the storms had now contracted to the west after several days of bad weather.

"We had quite a bit of squally thunderstorm activity moving across the area," Mr Hanniffy said.

He said winds were not too strong but the area was still hazardous.

"Across the northern parts of the Torres Strait we've got light to moderate north- to north-easterlies in play up here," Mr Hanniffy said.

"Certainly for the rest of the day that risk remains, given that proximity of that low, though it has moved away.

"There's still a risk of some potentially squally shower and thunderstorm activity related to that system."
