Located just an hour away by train from Paris, Tours is often used as a base for visiting the chateaux of Loire Valley. It is one of the largest cities in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France, well connected by public transport to the most famous castles in the area. Indeed, from here, you can easily reach the historic palaces of Chenonceau, Chambord, Blois and Amboise.

Once the capital of France, today Tours is a lively city boasting a beautiful historic centre with half-timbered houses and gourmet bistros. A perfect stop on your way through the Loire Valley!

What to do in Tours, France in one day

Thanks to its central location and excellent public transport connections to the nearby towns, Tours is a great base to discover the chateaux of Loire. This is one of the main cities I’d recommend you to base yourself in, especially if you’re travelling by train.

Besides being an excellent base for touring the historic chateaux, Tours itself is worth at least half a day of exploring. Take a walk along the narrow cobbled streets while admiring the half-timbered houses, the impressive Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the Renaissance Hotel Gouïn.

09:00 AM – 10:00 AM Start your one day in Tours with breakfast at L’Atelier du Talemelier or Kat’s Coffee . L’Atelier du Talemelier is a great bakery which offers quality pastries and sandwiches. However, if you prefer to enjoy some delicious cakes with your coffee, head to Kat’s Coffee.

Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours

10:00 AM – 10:25 AM Basilique Saint-Martin de Tours (Basilica of St. Martin) is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours, the third bishop of Tours. It was built over the traditional burial site of the saint in the 5th century AD. During the centuries, the small basilica was replaced several times with larger structures.

The basilica in a Neo-byzantine style that you see today dates from the 19th century. However, you can still see some of the remains of the older Romanesque edifice – the western clock tower and Tour de Charlemagne (Charlemagne Tower). They are located just a few steps away from the current church.

Inside the crypt, you’ll find the tomb of Saint Martin.

10:30 AM – 10:45 AM Tour de l’Horloge (Clock Tower) and Tour de Charlemagne are the only remnants of the impressive structure of the 11th-century Romanesque Basilica of Saint Martin.

Tour de Charlemagne was built on the site of the tomb of Luitgard, the last wife of Charlemagne. The king was so greatly affected by her death in 800, that he decided that Luitgard would be buried in the Basilica of Saint Martin. In the 19th century, the Charlemagne Tower was converted into a water tower.

Although, it’s not possible to visit the towers, take a few moments and admire their structure. Just imagine the grandeur of the 11th-century Romanesque basilica, of which these towers were part!

Place Plumereau

10:50 AM – 11:05 AM Place Plumereau is the heart of the historic centre of Tours. It is a lively square with bars and restaurants, framed by charming 15th-century half-timbered houses. A popular place to sit and watch the world go by!

The square is named in honour of Charles Plumereau, a municipal councillor of Tours, who bequeathed 3000 francs to the city.

Hôtel Goüin

11:15 AM – 11:30 AM This Renaissance palace served as a private mansion of a family of silk merchants in the 15th century. The façade with its beautiful arches is a real masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance. So don’t miss to take a quick look and admire the exterior!

Hôtel Goüin is named after a family of Breton bankers who purchased the building in 1738. And don’t be fooled by the word hotel, this is not an actual hotel, but a museum for temporary art exhibitions.

12:00 PM – 02:00 PM For lunch head to Les Gens Heureux . This typical French restaurant offers a small selection of interesting dishes with a unique combination of flavours.

Saint-Gatien Cathedral

02:00 PM – 02:30 PM Tours Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Gatien) is dedicated to the first bishop of Tours – Saint Gatianus. Built between 1170 and 1547, it reflects the development of the Gothic style of architecture. Some of the cathedral’s highlights include the spectacular 13th-14th century stained glass windows and an Italian-style organ.

The cathedral houses the tombs of the children of Anne de Bretagne and Charles VII. Also, you’ll find a chapel dedicated to Joan of Arc. She had met with Charles VII here in Tours, an important meeting which became a turning point in the Hundred Years’ War.

02:45 PM – 03:00 PM The last stop of this Tours itinerary is the town hall, Hôtel de Ville de Tours. Take your time and enjoy its magnificent Renaissance Revival façade.

The town hall was built between 1896 and 1904 by the famous architect Victor Laloux. It is the same architect who designed the Orsay museum in Paris!

Finish your one day in Tours with dinner at La Maison des Halles . The wine list here is great and the menu is excellent (don’t miss the desserts – the best I’ve had during a week in France).

Museum of fine arts.

The Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts) is housed in the former bishop’s palace. The museum owns a remarkable collection of Italian Primitives from the 14th-15th centuries. Among them are two renaissance paintings by Andrea Mantegna, considered masterpieces. You’ll also find many artworks by Delacroix, Degas, Monet, Rembrandt, Rubens and Rodin.

Don’t miss the staggering cedar tree at the museum entrance, which is over 200 years old!

Castle of Tours

Close to the cathedral, you’ll find the Castle of Tours (Château de Tours). Built in the 11th century, this small chateau served as a residence of the Carolingian dynasty. Today, it houses contemporary exhibitions of paintings and photographs .

Church of Saint Julien

The Church of Saint Julien (Église Saint-Julien de Tours) is a part of a former Benedictine abbey founded in the 6th century. Most of the church is in Romanesque style and dates back to the 13th century.

Tours Botanical Garden

Founded in 1843, the Botanical Garden (Jardin Botanique de Tours) is the oldest city park. It’s a lovely area with lots of wildlife and thematic gardens – greenhouses, orchards, medical gardens, arboretums and many others. There is also a petting zoo with farm animals like donkeys, sheep, rabbits and poultry!

Musée de Compagnonnage

Musée de Compagnonnage occupies the dormitory at the former Abbey of Saint-Julien. This quirky museum is dedicated to the city’s trade guilds. The exhibition represents various objects related to metalwork, tailoring, culinary, shoemaking and woodcarving.

Where to stay in Tours, France

If you intend to use Tours as a base to explore the Loire castles, take a look at my recommendations below on where to stay. You’ll find most of the historic attractions and restaurants in the area between the Loire River and the Central Railway station. So, I’d advise you to look for accommodations in this area, because you’ll be within walking distance of everything.

The Old Town of Tours is very compact and you can easily explore it by walking in less than an hour.

How to get to Tours, France

Tours is well connected to other major cities in France by train. For example, it’s less than a 2 hours journey from Paris Gare Montparnasse. Tours station (Gare de Tours) is the city’s main railway station. It’s located just a short walk from the Old Town.

Check timetables and book train tickets online at SNCF official website .

Tours is divided into three different types of zones – red, orange and blue. The first two are limited to 3 hours of parking, while the blue one – to 5 hours. However, parking in the Old Town is free on Sundays and Monday – Saturday (between 12 PM – 2 PM and 6:30 PM – 9 AM).

If you’re arriving by car I’d recommend booking a hotel with parking or using any of the paid car parks in the city centre (see a list of all car parks here ).

Loire valley chateaux.

The central location of Tours makes it a great base to explore the chateaux of Loire Valley. You’ll find a few of the most popular castles just a short train ride away. For more information, take a look at my guide on how to visit the Loire Valley .

Here are the most famous chateaux you can visit near Tours:

• Château de Chenonceau – known as Château des Dames, it’s the most beautiful Renaissance castle of Loire Valley
• Château de Chambord – this royal residence is one of the largest chateaux in France
• Château de Blois – home to 7 kings and 10 queens of France between the 13th and 17th centuries
• Château d’Amboise – the place where Leonardo Da Vinci spent his last years and where he is buried
• Château de Chaumont – a fairytale 10th-century castle, once home to Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers
• Château de Villandry – is known for its beautiful French Gardens, which consist of several terraces of renaissance gardens

How to get to Blois Take a train from Gare de Tours to Gare de Blois – Chambord (40min journey). From there, it’s a 10min walk to the Old Town and the chateau.

Located just a short train ride away, Angers is a great option for a day trip from Tours. The city is famous for its castle, the ancient seat of the Plantagenet dynasty and the Apocalypse tapestry, the largest medieval tapestry in the world. How to get to Angers Take a train from Gare de Tours to Gare d’Angers Saint-Laud (50min journey). From the central train station, it’s about a 10min walk to the city centre.

How many days in Tours, France

Is one day in tours enough.

The city of Tours can be easily visited in less than a day. In fact, most of the people come not for sightseeing but to use the city as a base to explore the nearby castles. Still, there is plenty to see, so dedicate at least half a day to this charming town.

Best time to visit Tours, France

If you intend to visit Tours as a part of your Loire Valley trip, do it in the months of May, June or September. Crowds are fewer and the weather is not hot, but nice and warm.

Tours is one of the largest cities in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. It is worth visiting not only for the impressive Saint-Gatien Cathedral and the Renaissance Hotel Gouïn, but also for the picturesque half-timbered houses. Thank you for the blog which covers Tours in depth. We are travelling On Nov 07th to Blois to see three castles and unfortunately all public transport stops on Nov 05th. We don’t have car. Apart from Taxi any other alternate solution ?

Unfortunately, there is no other option, but a taxi. However, there are still a lot of castles, which are are reachable by train – Château de Chenonceau, Château de Blois, Château de Chaumont, Château d’Amboise, Château d’Angers, Château de Langeais, Château de Saumur, Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, Château de Loches, Château de Chinon and Château de Meung-sur-Loire.

Visit Tours (Centre-Loire Valley, France)

The town of Tours is in the Indre-et-Loire department of the Centre region (the Loire Valley), and it is the largest town in the region. A busy, thriving town Tours is also only an hour to the south-west of Paris .

Exploring Tours

France This Way review: in Tours you will discover an extensive medieval historic centre, an imposing cathedral and cloisters, modern shopping streets and several other important monuments: together these make the town a very interesting and enjoyable destination to visit.

If possible, start your visit with a visit to Tours Tourist office on Rue Bernard Palissy to the south-east of the centre: this is adjacent to the car park on Rue Général Leclerc so we suggest you park there if arriving by car. The tourist office have lots of useful information about hidden sites and places you might not otherwise discover, such as a route for wine tasting...

One of the main attractions in Tours is the historic centre of the old town, in and around Place Plumereau. Around the edges of the square there are beautiful 12th to 15th century half timbered houses and some houses that also include fascinating features such as the carved figures on the facade of the house on the corner with Rue du Commerce.

The square is also filled with cafes and open air seating, so it’s a great place to sit and have a drink.

After exploring the streets in the historic centre, if you walk a short distance south along Rue du Change you reach another group of interesting buildings including the Tour Charlemagne, built over the tomb of Luitgarde, the wife of Charlemagne, and the Basilica Saint-Martin.

Inside the Basilica Saint-Martin , built in Tours in the 19th century in the neo-byzantine style, you can admire the painting of the dome and in the crypt of the church is the tomb of Saint-Martin, one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in France.

There are a number of grand houses dating from the Renaissance period along Rue du Commerce, to the east of the old town. Our favourite is the Hotel Gouin with a lovely Renaissance façade: the archeaology museum is now housed in the building.

At the end of Rue du Commerce you can see another impressive religious monument, the Church of Saint-Julien, that combines both roman and gothic styles of architecture.

Cathedral Saint-Gatien and La Psalette cloisters

The Cathedral Saint-Gatien, the most important religious monument in Tours, is at the east end of Rue Commerce and Rue Colbert, and contains the tombs of the children of Charles VIII. Most notable, although part of the cathedral dates from the 12th century, much of the western end was built in the 15th century in so-called 'flamboyant gothic' style.

Adjacent to the cathedral are the cloisters of la Psalette - an impressive structure in a mix of architectural styles with elaborate stonework and a beautiful renaissance staircase. In part of the cloisters you can see the room where religious chanting was practiced. The cloisters are listed as one of 85 National Monuments in France.

Other monuments in Tours

Next to the cathedral is the Museum of Fine Arts housed in the Archbishops Palace. You should stroll around the pretty gardens even if you are not going into the museum. There is also a cedar tree in the garden of the Archbishops palace, famous for being planted by Napoleon.

Next to the river on the other side of the cathedral you can see the Chateau of Tours, although only two towers now remain. The Tour de Guise houses a wax-work museum and a Tropical Aquarium.

If you walk south along Rue Nationale from the Church of Saint-Julien you can pause to do some shopping then continue to Place Jean Jaures to see two very impressive classical style buildings dating from Tours period of prosperity in the 18th century: the Palais de Justice and the Hotel de Ville.

As you would expect of a major town such as Tours you will also find a wide range of shops, restaurants and all other commerces. There are also markets held in different parts of the town almost every day of the week.

Parcs and gardens in Tours

For a change from the bustle of the streets there are several public parks and gardens in Tours. We enjoyed a visit to the Botanic gardens, an extensive area of trees, gardens and water features opposite the Bretonneau Hospital to the west of the centre and also a stroll around the Jardin des Prébendes d'Oé to the south of Tours town centre (rue Roger Salengro).

There are many others that we did not unfortunately have time to visit, which you will find on the map given out by the tourist office in Tours.

Attractions nearby

Of course no visit to the Loire Valley would be complete without visiting a castle or two, and several of the most important castles, towns and villages are within easy reach of Tours.

Among our favourites, the gardens at Château de Villandry are a short distance along the river to the west of Tours, and in the pretty town of Amboise you can visit the Chateau d'Amboise and Chateau de Clos Lucé , once home to Leonardo da Vinci. See also Loire Valley castles for more information.

Hay tantos sitios que ver en Tours que me ha costado mucho quedarme con una pequeña selección. Esta ciudad francesa, en pleno Valle del Loira , tiene todos los ingredientes para una escapada perfecta: monumentos históricos , castillos , plazas con mucho ambiente, espectáculos de luces nocturnos y una gastronomía para chuparse los dedos.

Aquí llegamos para visitar algunos de los lugares más emblemáticos de esta ciudad francesa, como su imponente ayuntamiento o la Basílica de San Martín de Tours . Pero lo que no me esperaba es encontrar una de las catedrales más bonitas que he visto nunca . No exagero.

Además, Tours presume del privilegio de tener una ubicación inmejorable para hacer esta ruta por los castillos del Loira . Allí descubrirás fortalezas de cuento, fosos de agua donde se reflejan altos torreones y jardines que son una obra de arte. Puedes incluso dar un paseo en helicóptero para ver los castillos del Loira desde las alturas. Aviso, ¡cuidado que esta zona de Francia engancha!

Catedral de Tours

La Catedral de Tours es, sin ninguna duda, una de las catedrales más bonitas que conozco de Francia . Está dedicada a San Gaciano , el primer obispo de Tours. Se comenzó a construir a principios del siglo XII, pero las obras no terminaron hasta mediados del siglo XVI.

De este edificio religioso destacan sus maravillosas vidrieras del siglo XIII , los detalles de la portada y la imponente fachada con sus dos esbeltas torres . No te vayas sin fijarte en sus frescos, en el órgano del siglo XVI y en sus mosaicos. Tiene mezcla de diferentes estilos góticos y me impresionó a partes iguales su interior y exterior. ¡Por la noche la iluminan y es preciosa!

La Catedral de Tours es una de las más bonitas de Francia para mi gusto.

Rue Nationale, la calle comercial que ver en Tours

Una de las principales arterias comerciales que ver en Tours es la Rue Nationale . Nos alojamos a 10 min a pie del centro y siempre recorríamos esta calle para llegar al casco histórico. Esta calle es bastante larga y rectilínea y une la plaza Jean Jaurès , donde se encuentra el Ayuntamiento y el Palacio de Justicia, y la plaza Anatole France .

Antiguamente esta calle se llamaba Rue Royale , pero el alcalde de Tours Jules Charpentier decidió devolverle el nombre de Rue Nationale y así se ha quedado (de momento).

Al final de esta calle, junto a la plaza Anatole France, está la Biblioteca pública de Tours , la Iglesia de San Julián y el Musée du Compagnonnage o Museo del Compañerismo . Por cierto, otro punto a favor de la Rue Nationale es que por aquí pasa el tranvía (¿a ti también te pierden las ciudades con tranvía?).

Ayuntamiento, el imponente edificio que ver en Tours

El Hôtel de Ville o Ayuntamiento de Tours es uno de los edificios más impresionantes de esta ciudad francesa a orillas del Loira. Fue construido entre 1896 y 1904 por el arquitecto Víctor Laloux y no eligió mala ubicación en plena Rue Nationale. El campanario y el reloj son preciosos, pero lo que más me gustó fueron las esculturas de la fachada . Imposible no alzar la mirada al pasear junto a este emblemático edificio.

Qué ver en Tours: el imponente edificio del Ayuntamiento.

Palacio de Justicia

Justo enfrente del Ayuntamiento está el Palacio de Justicia , otro de los sitios con más encanto que ver en Tours . Este edificio neoclásico fue construido entre 1840 y 1843 por Jean-Charles Jacquemin-Belisle (te reto a que memorices su nombre 😊). La verdad que al estar ubicado junto al Ayuntamiento, que tiene una arquitectura soberbia, puede pasar más desapercibido. Pero lo dicho, merece la pena.

El Palacio de Justicia se encuentra enfrente del Ayuntamiento de Tours.

Mercado Les Halles para los amantes de la buena gastronomía

Siempre que viajo, ya sabes que me encanta acercarme a los mercados para probar la gastronomía local. Aunque más adelante te contaré algún otro sitio donde comer en Tours , quería destacar este mercado.

Aquí puedes comprar un bote de rillettes de Tours , que es lo más típico de la zona, y aparte de los puestos de carne, pescado, frutas y verduras , tienes también comida preparada para llevar. Nosotros probamos una ensalada alsaciana y una ensalada piamontesa por 7,20€ y otro día volvimos para probar una quiche grande de queso que me supo a gloria (13,50€). Tanto que sueño con volver a comer esa quiche. ¡Exquisita!

Uno de mis sitios favoritos en Tours es el mercado de Les Halles por sus quiches.

Basílica de San Martín de Tours

La Basílica de San Martín de Tours ha sufrido varios percances a lo largo de la historia. Fue saqueada, transformada en establo, demolida e incendiada. De la colegiata antigua solo se conservan sus dos torres de las que te hablaré enseguida. El edificio actual es una basílica de estilo neobizantino del siglo XIX en la que se encuentra la tumba de San Martín de Tours .

También fue construida por Víctor Laloux , igual que el Ayuntamiento de Tours, y cuenta con un claustro renacentista, pinturas murales y una estatua de San Martín para decorar la cúpula.

La Basílica de San Martín de Tours es otro de los sitios más recomendables en esta ciudad francesa.

Torre de Carlomagno y Torre del Reloj

Otro monumento histórico que ver en Tours es la Torre de Carlomagno o Tour Charlemagne . Es uno de los pocos vestigios que se conservan de la antigua colegiata de San Martín de Tours . Esta torre fue declarada monumento histórico en 1958.

Y la otra superviviente de la antigua colegiata es la Torre del Reloj , construida entre los siglos XI y XIV. Antiguamente era conocida como Torre del Tesoro o Tour du Trésor , pero se le cambió el nombre a Torre del Reloj durante la Revolución francesa por el reloj que luce en su parte superior. Fue declarada monumento histórico en 1840.

La Torre de Carlomagno es uno de los pocos vestigios que se conservan de la antigua colegiata de San Martín de Tours.

La Torre del Reloj fue construida entre los siglos XI y XIV.

Iglesias que ver en Tours

Aunque la Catedral y la Basílica de San Martín de Tours se llevan el gran protagonismo, en Tours hay otras iglesias que merece la pena conocer. Algunas de ellas son la Église Notre-Dame la Riche , del siglo XII y la Église Saint-Denis de Tours , reconstruida en el siglo XV y cerrada al culto. Actualmente alberga el Centro Musical Jean de Ockeghem. También es interesante la Église Saint-Julien de Tours , del siglo XIII.

Hôtel de Beaune Semblançay, una galería curiosa que ver en Tours

Paseábamos sin rumbo fijo cuando de pronto nos topamos de frente con el Hôtel de Beaune Semblançay . ¿Y esta fachada renacentista tan curiosa? Al parecer aquí había un hotel en los siglos XV y XVI , propiedad de Jacques de Beaune, barón de Semblançay y superintendente de Finanzas de Francisco I. Aunque gran parte del edificio quedó destruido, ha sobrevivido una galería porticada , la fuente de Beaune y la estructura de la fachada.

Rue Colbert y la Place Foire le Roi

Varios de los sitios que voy a recomendarte después para comer están en la Rue Colbert . En esta calle hay decenas de bares y restaurantes donde llenar el estómago de comida deliciosa. Además, justo en esta calle está la Place Foire le Roi , con un precioso palacete, alguna fachada con entramado de madera y varias casas del siglo XV . Muy cerca está la iglesia de San Julián que te he mencionado antes.

La Rue Colbert es perfecta por su gran variedad de bares y restaurantes.

Guinguette de Pont Wilson, las mejores vistas del Loira

No conocía el significado de Guinguette hasta que viajé a Tours. Normalmente se utiliza esta palabra para referirse a un merendero donde la gente iba también a bailar . En Tours esta Guinguette tiene la peculiaridad de que se encuentra a orillas del Loira , con unas vistas espectaculares del río, y está muy próxima al Puente Wilson , de ahí su nombre. Aquí puedes disfrutar de conciertos en vivo, noches de cine, comida y bebida a precio asequible, juegos para niños… ¡En verano tiene un ambientazo que no te lo puedes perder!

Las mejores vistas del Loira las tienes desde la Guinguette del Puente Wilson.

Place de Châteauneuf

Aparte de su ubicación muy cerca de la Basílica de San Martín de Tours, de la Torre de Carlomagno y la Torre del Reloj, me encantó de la Place de Châteauneuf sus edificios en tono ocre y las tiendas y restaurantes de esta plaza . Salvando las distancias, me recordó un poco a los edificios color ocre de La Rochelle . Por cierto, ¡iluminada es preciosa!

Desde la Plaza Châteauneuf se ve la Torre de Carlomagno, entre otros monumentos históricos.

Place Plumereau

Si tuviera que quedarme con una sola plaza de Tours , esa sería la Place Plumereau , comúnmente conocida como Place Plume por los locales. Está en pleno casco histórico de Tours y las terrazas de sus bares y restaurantes están muy cotizadas . Y lo mejor, ¡está repleta de casas con entramado de madera ! Estos edificios datan del siglo XV, así que te puedes imaginar que todo el mundo quiere tomar algo con semejante patrimonio histórico a su alrededor.

Se me olvidaba, a escasos metros encontrarás el Jardín Saint Pierre-le-Puellier , por si buscas un lugar menos atestado de gente. Aunque dudo que la Place Plume te defraude.

La Place Plumereau es comúnmente conocida como Place Plume por los locales.

Museo de Bellas Artes y su espectáculo nocturno de luces

Gracias a la hermana de una amiga que vive en Tours, me enteré de este espectáculo nocturno que hacen todas las noches en el Museo de Bellas Artes . Podrás ver por fuera el edificio del antiguo Palacio Episcopal y disfrutar de este espectáculo de luces y música en sus jardines. ¡La gente iba súper preparada con mantas para sentarse (o incluso tumbarse) sobre el césped!

Lo único que tienes que tener en cuenta es que solo se celebra de julio a septiembre y, aunque es un espectáculo gratuito , debes hacer la reserva previamente en la página oficial de Les Nuits Renaissance .

No te pierdas el espectáculo de luces en el Museo de Bellas Artes durante las noches de verano.

Castillos del Loira cerca de Tours

En este artículo te cuento en detalle los que en mi opinión son los mejores castillos del Loira . La verdad que es muy complicado quedarse con uno solo, pero te adelanto que algunos de mis favoritos, que además están cerca de Tours, son el de Azay-le-Rideau , Chenonceau , los jardines de Villandry , el castillo de Ussé , el de Amboise porque dentro está la tumba de Leonardo da Vinci y Clos Lucé , la casa donde vivió este genio sus últimos 3 años y en la que verás muchas de las maquetas de sus prodigiosos inventos.

Eso sí, ¡planifica bien tus días en Tours para que te dé tiempo a ver la ciudad y, sobre todo, los castillos! Son los auténticos protagonistas del Valle del Loira, eso es indiscutible.

Por cierto, también me gustó mucho el castillo de Sully-sur-Loire , aunque queda un poco más alejado de Tours. Si estás haciendo un road trip en coche, te recomiendo que lo incluyas en tu itinerario. Además, aquí te cuento qué ver en Sully-sur-Loire , un pueblo al que llegaron personajes ilustres como Juana de Arco y Luis XIV.

A continuación te dejo varias excursiones para conocer los mejores castillos del Loira desde Tours :

• Excursión a los castillos de Chenonceau, Chambord y Bodegas Duhard
• Tour por los castillos de Chenonceau, Amboise y Clos-Lucé
• Excursión al castillo de Villandry y los viñedos de Vouvray
• Tour por los castillos de Azay-le-Rideau, Rivau y Villandry
• Tour por los castillos de Blois, Cheverny y Chambord

Bodegas para probar el famoso vino francés

Si te gusta el vino o simplemente te apetece probar a qué sabe el vino francés, te recomiendo que visites alguna de las muchas bodegas que hay entre Tours y Am boise. La elección es muy personal porque depende del tipo de vino que te guste, pero te recomiendo las bodegas de Vouvray y las Grandes Caves de St. Roch , en Rochecorbon, donde hacen vino espumoso. Santé !

¿Quieres recorrer los castillos del Loira en coche?

Dónde comer en Tours

Ya te he hablado antes del mercado de Les Halles , que me encantó. No es un sitio para sentarte a comer, pero sí para comprar comida para llevar o incluso carne, pescado y verduras si te alojas en un apartamento.

En cuanto a restaurantes, me gustó mucho O&A . Aquí pedimos dos menús con entrante, primer plato y una botella de agua por 67€ (dos personas). Es comida gourmet a precio asequible para ser Francia. Ten en cuenta que solo abren de lunes a viernes.

El restaurante O&A es uno de los sitios que más te recomiendo para comer en Tours.

Otro sitio que me encantó fue L’Affiné . ¡Me flipa el queso! Por eso, no podía irme de Tours sin probar una plancha de quesos acompañada de un vino francés. No es barato, pero es perfecto si te apetece probar una gran variedad de quesos. Si prefieres algo más económico, en el centro tienes planchas de queso y charcutería más asequibles.

¿Te apetece ver el Valle del Loira desde las alturas?

Hoteles en Tours

Es importante organizar bien tu ruta para exprimir al máximo tus visitas a los castillos del Loira. Por eso, te recomiendo dormir en Tours , ya que desde allí tienes a tiro de piedra muchos de los castillos del Loira más emblemáticos. Otra opción, si Tours no te convence, es Amboise.

A continuación te cuento mis hoteles preferidos en Tours , incluido en el que me alojé yo:

• Ibis Budget Tours Centre Gare et congrès : nos alojamos en este hotel y la relación calidad-precio es buena. Está a un corto paseo del centro y sus habitaciones son cómodas y funcionales.
• Oceania L’Univers Tours : este hotel es céntrico, las habitaciones son muy amplias y cuenta con piscina y spa. Dicen que el desayuno está espectacular.
• Best Western Central Hotel : este hotel está muy bien ubicado, cerca de la Place Plumereau y de la Catedral de Tours. Las habitaciones son cómodas y el desayuno es muy completo.

Hay dos razones por las que los turistas españoles van a la ciudad francesa de  Tours , y hasta el punto de que en los últimos años España se ha convertido en el primer país de procedencia de los turistas que la visitan.

En primer lugar, Tours es una etapa de la ruta por el Valle del Loira para ver sus famosos castillos , y hay muchos visitantes que se alojan en la ciudad al tomarla como base en este viaje.

Pero, por otro lado, a Tours llegan muchos visitantes como peregrinos interesados por la figura de San Martín de Tours y para ver su sepulcro .

En cualquier caso, Tours es una ciudad que está marcada en el eje de la ruta desde España a París , y a la que desde la capital francesa se llega en apenas una hora en tren de alta velocidad TGV , por lo que es muy accesible para ser visitada.

La configuración actual de  Tours muestra tres zonas bien diferenciadas que se deben a su origen y su evolución histórica, las cuales se extienden en la orilla sur del río Loira  que cruza la ciudad.

Curiosidades de la historia de Tours (Valle del Loira)

La ciudad de Tours se remonta a la época galo-romana , en la que había una pequeña población abierta, sin murallas.

Ante la llegada de los bárbaros , se necesitó amurallar la ciudad, lo cual se hizo en el siglo IV, y es la zona cuyo eje central es la catedral gótica .

Quién era San Martín de Tours

Por entonces apareció quien luego fuera San  Martín de Tours , un soldado romano que tuvo una  aparición de Jesucristo , y a partir de entonces se dedicó a evangelizar a los campesinos, llegando a ser nombrado Obispo de Tours en el año 370.

Fue enterrado en un cementerio que estaba a cierta distancia de la pequeña ciudad amurallada, y a partir de ahí empezó a desarrollarse otra pequeña ciudad que es donde se encuentra el actual centro histórico

Con el tiempo la población fue ocupando el espacio que había entre ambas ciudades, hasta que al final en el siglo XIV se construyó una gran muralla que ya encerraba las dos pequeñas ciudades para proteger a toda la población durante la época de la Guerra de los Cien años .

Otro hecho a destacar es que la ciudad de Tours se encuentra en el eje del Camino de Santiago Francés .

Este se corresponde con la antigua carretera nacional 10 que iba de París a España, que en el siglo XVIII dio paso la calle Nacional que en la actualidad cruza de norte a sur la ciudad separando las dos zonas históricas.

Estas ahora son conocidas como el Barrio de la Catedral , o Ciudad Vieja , y el Barrio de San Martín , pues ahí se encuentra el sepulcro del santo.

Finalmente, a partir de la llegada en 1845 del ferrocarril a Tours , como extensión de la primera línea que en Francia unía París con Orleans , se extendió un nuevo barrio donde ahora verás edificios de arquitectura clásica francesa, destacando el del Ayuntamiento .

Lo mejor que ver y hacer en Tours en un día de turismo

Para tu viaje tienes la posibilidad de apuntarte a algunas de las visitas guiadas  que ofrece la Oficina de Turismo , y al hilo del tour que hice durante mi reciente visita de esta ciudad del Valle del Loira , te voy a indicar los principales lugares de interés en Tours que deberías conocer en la visita de un día .

El punto de partida puede ser la propia Oficina de Turismo , la cual está situada frente a la estación de ferrocarril donde posiblemente puedas llegar en TGV , la cual se construyó con motivo de la llegada del tren a la ciudad, y donde puedes recopilar información sobre la ciudad.

Dicha oficina está junto al edificio del Centro de Congresos que en 1993 se construyó por el arquitecto Jean Nouvel .

Desde este lugar te deberías dirigir directamente a la catedral de San Gatien , edificio gótico construido entre los siglos XIII y XVI.

Museo de Bellas Artes en Tours

Está situada junto al edificio del Palacio del Arzobispo , una de cuyas torres conserva en su base vestigios de la original muralla galo-romana del siglo IV.

Ahora el edificio es la sede del Museo de Bellas Artes , el cual conserva la mejor colección que hay en Francia de primitivos italianos.

Te adelanto que seguro te llamará la atención el impresionante cedro de Líbano plantado en 1804 que tiene todo el protagonismo en el recinto ajardinado de dicho palacio.

A señalar también una escultura dedicada a Balzac , el otro gran personaje importante de la ciudad de Tours , quien naciera en una casa de la citada calle Nacional , la cual fue destruida durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial .

Catedral de Tours

La fachada de la catedral de Tours está ubicada en el lado oeste del lugar donde estaba la antigua muralla y frente a un pequeño parque.

Lo que más te llamará la atención de esta imponente fachada es comprobar que los tímpanos de las puertas de la catedral están calados, de forma que la luz entra a través de las vidrieras.

En esta línea, el rosetón tiene una forma irregular para propiciar también una mayor entrada de luz al interior de la catedral.

Verás también que las hornacinas de la fachada no conservan ninguna estatua, pues fueron destruidas por los protestantes en la guerra contra los católicos en 1562.

Nada más entrar al interior de la catedral , tendrás la sensación de una gran altura en la nave central, pero en realidad se trata de un efecto óptico; de hecho su altura es de 29 metros.

Debes saber que el 70 por ciento de las vidrieras de la catedral son originales, si bien a este respecto seguro que te llaman la atención las vidrieras con un moderno diseño de la zona del presbiterio.

Dicha zona fue reformada a finales de los año 90, y la reconocerás fácilmente por el color diferente de la piedra y por las citadas vidrieras que fueron diseñadas muy recientemente, en 2013, mostrando una de ellas la figura del Papa Benedicto XVI .

Calle Colbert, antigua calle Mayor de Tours

Desde la catedral te puedes dirigir a la antigua calle Mayor , la cual históricamente unía las zonas de los actuales barrios de la Catedral y San Martín .

Hasta cruzar la calle Nacional ahora se llama calle Colbert , y verás que se trata de una estrecha calle estrecha que se ha convertido en una zona de restaurantes frecuentados por los locales y los turistas.

Durante tu paseo te encontrarás con algún bonito conjunto de casas con fachas entramadas , como la que te recuerda con una placa que la heroína y santa francesa Juana de Arco recibió en Tours su armadura.

Además, buena parte de las casas que presentan fachadas de piedra en realidad mantienen su original estructura de madera, y fueron recubiertas con la citada piedra en los siglos XVIII y XIX para evitar los incendios.

Iglesia de San Julián en Tours

En el cruce con la calle Nacional te encuentras la iglesia de San Julián con su fachada del siglo XII de estilo románico .

Te llamará la atención que la planta de la iglesia se encuentra a un nivel del suelo claramente inferior al de la calle Nacional , pues es del siglo XII cuando fue construida, mientras que dicha calle fue diseñada siglos después, en el XVIII.

Museo del Gremialismo en Tours

El edificio anexo a la iglesia es el del antiguo dormitorio de los monjes que residían en el monasterio en la Edad Media , y ahora alberga el Museo del Gremialismo donde puedes ver sorprendentes obras de artesanía .

Muestra una gran colección de trabajos artesanos realizados con los más diversos materiales, y es el único museo en Francia donde puedes ver este tipo de colección.

Calle del Comercio en Tours

Una vez cruces la citada calle Nacional , la antigua calle Mayor sigue ahora por la denominada calle del Comercio , lugar donde se concentraban los comerciantes en la Edad Media para atender a los peregrinos que llegaban a ver el sepulcro de San Martín de Tours .

Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Tours

En ese punto se encuentra el edificio de la nueva sede del Centro de Creación Contemporánea , ahora también conocido como  Centro Olivier Debré .

No es un museo sino un centro de exposiciones temporales que en su sede inicial se fundó en 1984, y por donde ya han pasado más de 300 artistas contemporáneos.

Cuenta con tres enormes salas idóneas para hacer grandes instalaciones, y cabe destacar que en la actualidad en la principal se muestran seis enormes pinturas donadas en su día por el artista francés Olivier Debré .

Ya fallecido, fue quien mejor supo reflejar las sensaciones que provoca el río Loira , y en la actualidad da nombre al nuevo centro de arte contemporáneo.

Casa señorial Hotel Gouin en Tours

Según avanzas hacia el corazón del Barrio de San Martín , pasarás junto a la casa palaciega del siglo XV conocida como Hotel Gouin , edificio al que en el siglo XVI se añadió su bonita fachada de estilo renacentista .

El edificio original fue destruido durante el incendio de 1940 provocado por el ataque de los alemanes a la ciudad de Tours, pero dicha fachada se pudo conservar al estar añadido en su frontal.

En la actualidad el Hotel Gouin es utilizado para eventos y exposiciones temporales .

Plaza Plumareau o del Mercado en Tours; terrazas y bares

Pronto llegarás al citado corazón de este barrio histórico que te sorprenderá por su gran ambiente durante el día y la noche de terrazas de bares y restaurantes .

A este respecto debes saber que Tours es una destacada ciudad universitaria tras la instalación en 1970 de tres facultados muy cerca de este barrio.

Por ello en la actualidad también es conocido como el Barrio de los Estudiantes .

En la plaza Plumareau encuentras una de las imágenes icono de Tours , la de un bonito conjunto de casas con fachadas entramadas que en los siglos XV y XVI fueron ocupadas por comerciantes y artesanos.

Toda esta zona fue rehabilitada por el Ayuntamiento de Tours a partir de 1973, y en la actualidad es un lugar siempre muy concurrido de estudiantes y turistas que disfrutan de las terrazas que cubren toda la zona peatonal.

A destacar en la plaza la conocida como casa de la Sagrada Familia , del siglo XV, con toda la fachada cubierta de pizarra, y en la que se conservan las esculturas originales.

Torres de Carlomagno y del Reloj en Tours

Muy cerca es cuando encuentras el lugar que da nombre a este barrio histórico, y punto de encuentro de los peregrinos que viajan a la ciudad de Tours , la Basílica de San Martín .

La original basílica era más grande que la catedral pues tenía hasta cinco naves, pero durante la Revolución Francesa fue destruida y con posterioridad se abrió una calle por en medio del espacio que ocupaba la nave central.

De dicho edificio solo se conservan la Torre de Carlomagno , a la cual puedes subir, así como los restos de la Torre del Reloj .

Como curiosidad, en 1996 el Papa Juan Pablo II permaneció tres días en Tours para orar a San Martín , y entonces se aprovechó la visita para arreglar la calle,

De esta forma ahora verás que está adoquinada y con los adoquines se marcan los lugares donde se encontraban las columnas de la iglesia,

Junto a la Torre de Carlomagno tienes un panel que te describe cómo era la planta de la iglesia y te muestra dibujos del edificio original y de cómo quedó la calle tras la Revolución Francesa .

Basílica de San Martín en Tours

La actual Basílica de San Martín se remonta a 186o cuando se descubrió el sepulcro de San Martín , lo que llevó a levantar una nueva iglesia de estilo arquitectónico neo-bizantino parecido al del Sagrado Corazón de París .

El arquitecto fue  Victor Laloux , el mismo que construyó las estaciones ferroviarias de Orsay en París y la de Tours.

Mercado Les Halles en Tours

En la visita a las ciudades siempre me gusta visitar los mercados, pues te da una referencia de cómo es la vida cotidiana en la misma.

Y en el caso de Tours merece la pena visitar su mercado de Les Halles construido en 1970 en este barrio.

En el verás establecimientos todos muy cuidados, tipo gourmet con productos de gran calidad.

A destacar el establecimiento de quesos de Rodolfo le Meunièr , considerado el mejor Obrador de Francia por su labor como afinador de quesos, especialista en la elaboración de quesos de la región, los cuales son todos de cabra.

Sitios de ocio en Tours: La Guinguette a orillas del Loira

Si bien el ambiente de bares y terrazas lo tienes asegurado en la antes citada plaza Plumareau , en Tours no falta la tradición de los lugares de ocio conocidos como guinguettes que se sitúan a orillas del río Loira .

Tomarse una cerveza o un refresco en La Guinguette de Tours en el Loira y escuchar música en directo, es la mejor forma de cerrar tu jornada de turismo en esta ciudad francesa.

No tienes pérdida, la encuentras junto al puente que cruza el Loira prolongando la calle Nacional .

Dónde dormir en Tours: Art Hotel

Y para completar nuestras propuestas para tu viaje a la ciudad de Tours , te voy a hacer una sugerencia muy especial.

En las afueras de la ciudad, en la ribera del río Loira  en Rochecorbon , encuentras el Art Hotel , un establecimiento situado en un chateau de 1888, que en el pasado fue desde centro de acogida para refugiados políticos hasta residencia para la Tercera Edad .

Desde apenas hace unos años este clásico chateau , cuya escalera exterior está considerada patrimonio monumental , es un hotel de muy moderno diseño que en todos sus elementos y espacios combina los colores blanco y negro.

Con 17 habitaciones, en la actualidad es muy frecuentado por turistas americanos y japoneses, y como elemento de su distinción, te diré que es uno de los puntos de recarga de los coches eléctricos Tesla .

Tours se encuentra a 220 kilómetros al sur de París , desde donde llegas en coche en poco más de dos horas, y en tren de alta velocidad TGV , en una hora.

Primera Grand Départ desde Italia y 26º desde fuera de Francia. Llegada a Niza. Debido a la celebración de los Juegos Olímpicos y Paraolímpicos en París, por primera vez, la meta final no será la capital francesa.

Dos contrarrelojes.  25 + 34, para un total de 59 km. La segunda se disputará en la última etapa Mónaco > Niza. Un desenlace que no ha revestido esta forma desde hace 35 años, cuando se libró el famoso duelo Fignon - LeMond en 1989. 

Los Apeninos (Italia), los Alpes italianos y franceses, el Macizo Central y los Pirineos son los macizos montañosos previstos en el programa del Tour 2024.

Número de países por los que pasará el Tour en 2024: Italia, San Marino, Mónaco y Francia .  En Francia se visitarán 7 regiones y 30 departamentos.

El número de puntos de bonificación: 8, 5 y 2 segundos para los tres primeros clasificados, atribuidos en lugares estratégicos del recorrido (bajo reserva de homologación por parte de la Unión Ciclista Internacional), lo que no tendrá ninguna incidencia sobre la clasificación por puntos. Bonificaciones de 10, 6 y 4 segundos para los tres primeros clasificados en la meta de las etapas en línea.

De un total de 39, lugares o ciudades etapa que aparecen por primera vez en el mapa del Tour . Por orden: Florencia, Rímini, Cesenatico, Bolonia, Piacenza, Saint-Vulbas, Gevrey-Chambertin, Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, Évaux-les-Bains, Gruissan, Superdévoluy, col de la Couillole

El número de tramos por carreteras blancas para un total de 32 km en la novena etapa.

El número de etapas: 8 en llano, 4 de media montaña, 7 de montaña (con 4 metas en alto en Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d'Adet, Plateau de Beille, Isola 2000, col de la Couillole), 2 contrarrelojes y 2 jornadas de descanso.

Número de corredores en la salida del Tour, repartidos en 22 equipos de 8 corredores.

Altitud en la cima de la Bonette en los Alpes, la carretera asfaltada más alta de Francia, el techo del Tour 2024.

El desnivel positivo total del Tour de Francia 2024.
