Ecotourism in the Ecuadorian Amazon

I don’t think I actually knew what “green” meant before I visited the Ecuadorian Amazon.

As we walked towards our jungle camp, the forest around us got thicker and thicker. New shades of green appeared around every bend in the path. The pale green of new leaves. The darker green of fallen leaves, trampled underfoot into a soft, spongy mattress.

The green rainbow of the forest canopy, reaching far above us and hiding the sun from view. It made us feel truly immersed in this wild, primal paradise.

Saying that we were excited was an understatement. Visiting the Amazon was a dream we’d both had since childhood. It was also one we both hoped to experience before it was too late.

Sadly, the Ecuadorian Amazon has been the site of several environmental disasters over the last century , from oil drilling and logging to slash ’n’ burn agriculture.

Each caused the destruction and/or pollution of large sections of forest, endangering the survival of the forest’s animals , plants and indigenous people.

Ecuadorian Amazon Rain Forest

Luckily, ecotourism has also arrived to this remote corner of the planet. Its growth is helping to preserve and protect the Ecuadorian Amazon ecosystem.

At the same time, it provides local communities with an alternative revenue stream. They no longer need to sell their natural resources to exploitative industries, allowing them to preserve their traditions without destroying their ancestral land.

There are dozens of reasons to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon. The main one, of course, is nature. The region has the world’s highest concentration of biological diversity.

There are countless nature-related activities available, including multi-day camping expeditions , excellent bird watching, and canopy walks.

Most importantly, supporting responsibly managed tourism helps local communities and makes a difference in preserving the precious Ecuadorian Amazon ecosystem. If this isn’t a win-win situation, I don’t know what is!

Wildlife in the Ecuadorian Amazon

The Ecuadorian Amazon may not be as large as Brazil, but in terms of in biodiversity it is second to none. Yasunì National Park is said to be home to the highest density of wildlife on the planet, including 150 species of amphibian and 121 of reptiles.

This amounts to a third of all Amazon amphibian and reptile species, even though Yasuni only covers 0.15% of the total Amazon Basin area.

Yasuni National Park contains 382 documented fish species (including three species of Piranha ) and more than 300 mammal species (including Monkeys, Pumas, Jaguars and several Bat species, one of which is endemic).

But the most common animals by far are insects. One acre of rainforest can be home to about 70,000 species of insects.

But no matter how skeevy these creepy crawlies may make you feel, it shouldn’t deter you from visiting this wonderful corner of the planet. If anything, it’s an added reason to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon !

The Ecuadorian Amazon at Night

Nighttime is the best time to go out with the hope of spotting wildlife. That’s when animals are at their most active.

Following our guide and the beam of his torch into the dark wilderness, we felt as if we were entering a mysterious world that’s called home by thousands of still-unknown species.

Hiking around the rainforest at night was actually the highlight of our visit. We spotted Tarantulas hiding under leaves, Scorpion Spiders slowly crawling up tree trunks and tiny poisonous frogs.

We even saw some Night Monkeys , which reminded us of the Lemurs in Madagascar with their large, hypnotic eyes.

We also went on a canoe trip along the river at night, where we had the chance to spot a Caiman resting on the rocks. We barely had time to snap a picture before it dove straight into the river.

However, what impressed us the most about the Ecuadorian Amazon at night was its remarkable sound. We imagined it would be eerily silent, but it was quite the opposite.

We heard whistles and whirrs, thumps, shrills and cries, moans and birdsong. Some found it creepy, but I thought it was comforting. In the rainforest, nature felt alive.

Birdwatching in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Another great reason to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon is the incredible bird watching opportunities you’ll find there. There are over 1600 bird species recorded, including iconic species such as Macaws, Toucans and Hummingbirds.

One of the area’s more peculiar bird is the Hoatzin, a strange creature resembling a turkey that is only found in the Amazon. The Hoatzin is a mystery to ornithologists. This is a bird with no known living relatives.

For a long time it was believed to descend from prehistoric birds, because of the claws on its wings.

Hoatzin are poor fliers and often hang around oxbow lakes, where they can easily be spotted. Some people call them “Punk-Rock birds” due to their colorful, Mohawk-like crests.

They’re also commonly referred to as “Stinkbirds” because of their smell. But, to be honest, I didn’t think that was so bad.

Other Activities in the Ecuadorian Amazon

One of the things that impressed me the most about the area was the rainforest canopy, which was so thick and dense that it felt like a real ceiling.

Sometimes it was hard to tell what time of day it was, or if it was sunny or cloudy. The canopy is home to lots of wildlife: Not just monkeys and birds, but also Puma and Jaguars, whose roars can sometimes be heard.

A canopy walk offers a great way to get close to this wonderful part of the forest and spot animals and plants that cannot be seen from the ground. Many lodges offer them, providing guests with a true bird’s-eye view of the forest.

Early in the morning you might even find yourself in the middle of a “monkey procession.” We witnessed hundreds of Capuchin monkeys making their way across the forest, jumping from branch to branch.

Another popular activity is a canoe trip through the flooded forest, which is possible during the wet season. Lodges are often only accessible by motorized canoe, but the noise of the engine tends to scare animals away.

A traditional canoe gives you a chance to move in total silence. This improves your chances to spot elusive wildlife like Spectacled Caiman, Giant Anacondas and Capybaras, the world’s largest rodent.

The People of the Rainforest

One of the highlights of our visit to the Ecuadorian Amazon was visiting a local village. There we learned about the culture of local indigenous communities and their struggle in balancing tradition and modernity.

The area around the Rio Napo tributary (where our lodge was located) is home to the Huaorani , a traditional hunter-gatherer tribe.

Traditionally, Huaorani people never wore clothes, and hunted in the forest using a blowpipe and poison darts.

The Huaorani lifestyle has been changing ever since their ancestral land was opened to outside investors and motorized canoes cut connection times to the nearest cities.

They started trading and buying manufactured goods, and many started working at nearby logging plants or oil drills.

READ MORE: Shaman Blessing and Amazon Village Life in Peru

Ecuador Amazon Rain Forest tree mushrooms

However, the Huaorani still rely heavily on the forest for survival. Their name for forest and world is the same, öm ë . The forest is, indeed, their world. Huaorani have been born, lived and died in the forest for centuries.

Even today, they know it deeply, and speak of it as if it were a sentient being. Their myths and legends are all set in the forest, and part of their belief system includes respect of all forms of life. Animals are never killed, except for food.

Due to their intimate knowledge of the forest, local Huaorani are often employed as naturalist guides. During our walks, our guide shared some of his secrets with us.

We learned about medicinal plants, plants used to clean one’s teeth, how to get water from the trunk of trees, and even the best leaves to use in lieu of toilet paper.

Nowadays, the traditional lifestyle of the Huaorani is in danger, as is the Ecuadorian Amazon itself. More and more mining and petrol concessions are given out each year. Young people see no future in the forest, and leave their land for the cities of Coca or Quito.

Soon their ancestral knowledge may survive only in ethnographic publications, and in the memory of elderly villagers.

Responsibly managed ecotourism offers their only chance of survival, preventing centuries of knowledge from vanishing under the axe that continues to fell acres of rainforest every day. -Margherita Ragg; photos by Nick Burns

12 things to know before going to Ecuador

ecuador green travel

Be prepared for your visit to Ecuador with this guide to things you should know © John Coletti / Getty Images

Ecuador  has emerged as a popular travel destination in South America, and with good reason.

With four geographic regions squeezed into a compact 283,561 sq km (109,484 sq miles), the country caters to all kinds of travelers.

Whether you’re looking for adventure in spectacular landscapes , relaxation on white-sand beaches , or cultural experiences in UNESCO World Heritage Sites, booking a trip to Ecuador will surely fit the bill.

But just like traveling anywhere, visiting this enchanting country has its own peculiarities. Here are our useful tips to help you make the most of your trip to Ecuador, one of the most biodiverse places in the world.

A marine iguana wanders along a white-sand beach as tourists and photographers pass in the background

1. Ecuador is more than just the Galápagos Islands

Although many consider continental Ecuador a stopover on the way to the Galápagos Islands , visiting the country is well worth your time. For adroit travelers, staying in Ecuador for seven to 10 days will allow them to explore its main attractions . However, if you can stay longer, anywhere near 15 to 20 days will suffice to tour Ecuador’s most prominent cities and towns.

2. Be aware of altitude sickness

Sitting at 2850m (9350ft) above sea level, the Ecuadorian capital Quito, is the second-highest capital city in the world. This means travelers are prone to altitude sickness upon arrival — manifested through headaches, nausea and dizziness.

This can also be an issue if you visit cities in the highlands with similar elevations. If you arrive from low-altitude places, take things slow and allow your body to acclimate during your visit's first days. If you’re feeling sick, keep hydrated, and don’t exhaust yourself with excessive physical activity.

3. Despite popular belief, Ecuador is not a tropical country

Perhaps fueled by the moniker of “the country in the middle of the world,” many travelers wrongfully believe Ecuador is a tropical country and that they’ll encounter oppressively hot weather.

Though the climate will largely depend on the region you stay at, you can expect moderate temperatures. In the highlands , anticipate chillier weather and occasional rain, especially between October and April . Meanwhile, the coastal region enjoys warmer and generally steadier temperatures, although watch out for rain between February and April.

So, what should you pack for your trip to Ecuador? If you’re planning to venture into the mountains in the highlands, bring a packable jacket that keeps you both warm and dry and comfortable sturdy footwear for long walks.

If you’re staying in Quito , bring a jacket or cardigan everywhere — as you will discover, the weather can switch dramatically within minutes. You might also want to sunbathe on the shores of the Pacific coast or explore the Amazon rainforest, so don’t forget your beach essentials, comfortable clothing and a hat that protects you from the intense sun of the equator.

4. Make sunscreen your best friend

You may believe sunscreen is not a priority while visiting the Andean highlands or strolling down a colonial city, but due to its geographical location (standing on the equatorial line), sun rays shine perpendicularly in Ecuador. To protect your skin from UV rays throughout your stay, keep the sunscreen close and don’t forget to reapply it regularly!

5. Tackle the toilet paper myth

There are contradicting testimonials on the internet about discarding toilet paper in Ecuador. While many claim flushing toilet paper in Ecuador is safe, some cities and buildings (as modern as they are) don’t have adequate plumbing to guarantee you can do this without clogging the system.

The best way to solve the dilemma is to actually ask your hotel or the people in charge of the accommodation. When in doubt, always use the waste basket.

6. Tipping is a courtesy and not mandatory

The US dollar is the official currency in Ecuador, so eating out might not be as gasp-inducingly cheap as in neighboring countries. However, prices are relatively affordable compared to the US and Europe.

Generally, service is included in the bill (you’ll see a disclaimer on menus), so tipping is not mandatory. But if you’re feeling generous, leaving a tip is always a courtesy to show appreciation for the good service.

7. Don’t drink the tap water

Most urban cities in Ecuador have reliable potable water systems, so using tap water to cook and wash is considered safe.

Ecuadorians, however, will never drink tap water unless it has been purified and will mostly stick to boiling it before drinking. In rural areas, water is not necessarily potable, so opt out of drinking tap water entirely and favor boiled or bottled water.

8. Learn basic Spanish phrases

While knowing how to communicate with locals is a good idea on any trip, memorizing some Spanish keywords can truly make a difference in Ecuador. Learning etiquette words such as buenos días (good day), por favor (please) and gracias (thank you), as well as useful traveling phrases, will go a long way when interacting with Ecuadorian people.

Many Ecuadorians will find ways to communicate with you even if they can’t speak your language, but don’t assume or expect them to understand you without trying to speak in Spanish.

If you lack confidence in your Spanish-speaking skills, head for Quito, a preferred destination for language learning because of quiteños ’ slow and almost accentless way of speaking. Don’t be afraid to book a class or engage in Spanish learning experiences while you’re in town.

9. Violence and crime has increased

Unfortunately, over the last year, Ecuador has experienced a violent outburst of crime associated with drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations.

Violence is predominant in port cities and the coastal region, but this doesn’t mean you have to entirely rule the country out from your itinerary. People are still carrying out their daily lives, working hard to offer the best experiences to visitors.

10. Take safety precautions

While falling victim to crime can happen to anyone, being careful and taking additional precautions is always encouraged. If you travel to Guayaquil , the country’s second-biggest city and main port, and the provinces of Esmeraldas, Guayas and Los Ríos, be sure to avoid conflict areas and red zones. As a general rule everywhere in Ecuador, don’t wander alone and avoid being out late at night.

11. Be wary of overly friendly people

Traveling is synonymous with meeting new people and making friends. However, be cautious when going out, and don’t trust just anyone. Solo travelers in beach areas and the night scene should be particularly aware of common theft and robbery techniques (scams, drugs in drinks, the use of scopolamine to subdue victims).

Pay attention when meeting people. Don’t trust people who seem too eager to establish a conversation or get physically close to you for no reason. Don’t accept anything (flyers, cards etc) in the streets, and keep your valuables hidden.

12. Make basic checks on taxis and ride-hailing apps

Using apps and hailing taxis on the streets is relatively safe and affordable in Ecuador, but always check their credentials — car plates are nonnegotiable, if the car doesn’t have one, don’t get in.

If you opt for a taxi, always make sure that the meter is on when you hop in. If you’re uncomfortable with hailing taxis from the street, ask your tour guide or hotel staff for their trusted taxi or transportation companies.

Waterfall in Banos

Sustainable travel is easier then you think, guidelines in general are instinctive principles that many people do while traveling without even knowing they are supporting the local population & carrying out a neutral travel. A green travel shouldn’t be a check list of things to follow making it dull & tiresome, but it should rather compliment your visit, providing you with a sense of accomplishment & happiness – that you did more then just visit a certain area, but actually supported & participated in making it a better place.

General Awareness

Don’t think of this as homework, but as a sneak preview of whats to come, pick up a good book, read some travel guides, see a movie or a documentary about the country, anything that can build up to the excitement to plan your trip. Ecuador is a fascinating country, rich in nature, culture with many customs from food to colloquial sayings, remote communities & much more. The more informed you are of the country, the easier it will be to plan the destinations you want to visit, avoid unnecessary travel, keep your expectations real, support rural destinations with your visit & much more.

Packing Light

This can be easy for some & tasking for others, think of it this way – pack essential items that are a must to carry with you in your trip & unlikely to be found abroad, such as electronics, guidebooks, medicine etc. Avoid having excessive luggage out your door, all other things can be purchased along the way, you would be supporting the local economy, local businesses & families that sell clothing & other local goods & souvenirs for a living.

Support Sustainable Tours

Even the simplest of things such as choosing one tour over the other can increase your chances of having a sustainable neutral travel. Ecuador has had great progress in this regard and a lot of Amazon, Highlands & a few Galapagos cruises are environmentally conscious, following good practices, keeping to a bear minimum human impact in the area. Many lodges are owned & operated by local communities, no one better suited to protect their regions then themselves, where natural resources are conserved, looked after & cared for.

  • The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas, due to crime .
  • Esmeraldas city and all areas north of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to crime .

Country Summary : Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador. Violent crime, such as murder, assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery, is prevalent and widespread. The rate of violent crime is significantly higher in areas where transnational criminal organizations are concentrated.

Demonstrations occur frequently throughout the country, usually motivated by political and/or economic factors.  Demonstrators routinely block local roads and major highways, often without prior notice. Past demonstrations have varied in duration, with some extending for several days or weeks. Blocked roads may significantly reduce access to public transportation, health services, and airports and may disrupt travel both within and between cities.

Outside of Ecuador’s urban and semi-urban population centers, much of the country’s territory is sparsely populated and isolated. First responders’ and U.S. government officials’ access to rural and remote regions of the country is often extremely limited and can lead to significant delays in assistance to U.S. citizens in these areas.

Ongoing State of Emergency:  On January 8, 2024, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa declared a nationwide state of emergency for a period of 60 days. On March 7, 2024, President Noboa announced a 30-day extension to the state of emergency through April 8, 2024. U.S. citizens should be aware of several temporary rules applicable to residents and foreigners in Ecuador due to the state of emergency:

  • There is a nationwide curfew in effect for the duration of the state of emergency. Curfew restrictions vary based on location. For specific guidance, please refer to official curfew guidance issued by the Government of Ecuador. There is an exception for individuals traveling to and from the airports with a scheduled flight during curfew hours. U.S. citizens traveling to or from the airport during curfew hours should carry their flight itinerary and passport.
  • All foreign citizens entering the country via land border crossings from Colombia or Peru are required to present an apostilled certificate showing a lack of criminal record. See Travel.State.Gov ’s Office of Authentications webpage and Criminal Records Checks webpage for information on how to obtain a criminal record check and apostille from the United States. The U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Ecuador cannot assist citizens crossing a land border in obtaining the required documentation.
  • For additional information and updates to the state of emergency, please track official communications from the Government of Ecuador.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on traveling to Ecuador.

If you decide to travel to Ecuador:

  •  Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on  Facebook ,  Twitter , and  Instagram
  • Review the  Country Security Report  for Ecuador.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest  Travel Health Information  related to your travel.

Level 4: Do Not Travel

Guayaquil,  south  of Portete de Tarquí Avenue, due to  crime .

The cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in the Province of El Oro, due to  crime .

The cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in the province of Los Rios, due to  crime.

The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas, due to crime.

Esmeraldas city and all areas north of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to  crime .

Transnational criminal groups and local gangs regularly engage in violent criminal acts in these areas, including indiscriminate attacks without warning in public spaces. Violent crimes have included murder, targeted assassinations, armed robberies, bombings, kidnappings, and assaults, among others. Violence in these areas has steadily increased in frequency and brutality in recent months, posing an increased security risk to U.S. citizens. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling to these areas without prior authorization. As a result, the U.S. government is limited in its ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Guayaquil  north  of Portete de Tarquí Avenue, due to  crime .

El Oro province outside the cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas, due to  crime .

Los Rios province outside the cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo, due to  crime .

All areas south of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to  crime.

The provinces of Sucumbíos, Manabí, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo, due to  crime.

Transnational criminal groups and local gangs have sporadically engaged in violent criminal activity in these areas, with violence increasing in recent months. U.S. government personnel are directed to exercise extreme caution and maintain increased vigilance when traveling in and around these areas.

  • If you are planning a visit longer than 90 days, you must obtain a visa in advance.
  • The Ministry of Tourism provides general information for travelers on its  website .
  • You must carry identification, including proof of U.S. citizenship. Carry a photocopy of your passport (including the entry stamp and/or visa) with you at all times.
  • If your passport is lost or stolen while you are in Ecuador, you should obtain a police report and apply for a new passport at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General. Safety and Security

Exercise increased caution when traveling in Ecuador, and do not travel to the province of Carchi, the province of Sucumbíos, and the northern part of Esmeraldas province, including Esmeraldas city due to crime. U.S. government personnel may travel to the northern bank of the Napo River in Sucumbíos, where tourist lodges are located, an area approximately four miles wide, and to the portion of Esmeraldas province that is south of Esmeraldas city.

All other U.S. government travel to the northern border area is prohibited without prior permission. This region has a high rate of violent crime. U.S. citizens are not targeted, but have been victims of crime there in the past.

Crime:  Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador.

  • Pick-pocketing, robbery, and hotel room theft are the most common crimes. Tourists have been robbed at gunpoint on beaches and along hiking trails. Passengers arriving at the Quito and Guayaquil airports have also been targets of armed robberies.
  • Use hotel safes if available, avoid wearing obviously expensive jewelry or clothing, and carry only the cash or credit cards that you need. Stay alert in crowds and on public transportation. Be aware that thieves might create distractions to target you.
  • Be alert for robberies, in which criminals enter a taxi and force victims to withdraw money from ATMs. Some victims have been beaten or raped. Avoid hailing taxis on the street. Order taxis by phone or use a service affiliated with major hotels. Avoid withdrawing large amounts of cash at one time. Use ATMs in well-protected indoor areas.
  • To avoid carjacking or theft from your car while you are stopped at intersections, drive with your doors locked and windows rolled up. Do not leave valuables in plain view.
  • Sexual assaults and rapes can occur, even in tourist areas. Travel in groups, do not leave food or drinks unattended, and never allow a stranger to give you a drink.
  • Do not let your credit card out of your sight in order to avoid credit card “skimming.”
  • Incapacitating drugs, such as rohypnol and scopolamine, have been used to facilitate violent robberies and sexual assaults.

Civil Unrest:  Demonstrations may occur occasionally. They may take place in response to local or international events or on politically significant holidays. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent. Protesters may block roads and sometimes burn tires, throw rocks, and damage property.

  • Police may respond using water cannons and tear gas.
  • Avoid demonstrations and prepare back-up transportation plans. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent with little or no warning.
  • A disaster can disrupt food supply, so plan to have at least a 3-day supply of food and medicine on hand.

Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy in Quito or Consulate in Guayaquil for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by calling 911 . In Quito, you can visit an  Ecuadorian Tourist Security Service Attention Center . You can also contact the U.S. Embassy at +593-2-398-5000 or the U.S. Consulate General in Guayaquil at +593-4-371-7000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Information about victim’s assistance programs in Ecuador is available on the U.S.  Mission in Ecuador website .

  • help you find appropriate medical care
  • assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • provide a list of local attorneys
  • provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy or Consulate General for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in Ecuador are severe. Offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • Never agree to carry a suitcase or package through customs for anyone.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see the State Department’s website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General immediately. See our webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Seismic Activity:  There are numerous active volcanoes, and earthquakes are common. Earthquakes can trigger deadly tsunamis. Visit  Ecuador’s National Risk Management Secretariat  and the  Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute  for more information.

  • Mud or lava flows from  Tungurahua volcano  could pose a significant and immediate threat to travelers in Baños.
  • The town of Latacunga is directly in the path of potential mud or lava flow from the  Cotopaxi volcano . Even small emissions from the volcano can trigger avalanches and landslides. Low lying areas in the greater Quito area could also be affected if Cotopaxi erupts.
  • Reventador volcano is located in Napo province and is one of the most active in the country.
  • Sangay volcano is located in Morona Santiago province is active and local authorities advise against approaching the volcano and nearby Upano river.
  • In the event of a natural disaster, pay attention to the news media for updates. A disaster can disrupt food supply, so plan to have at least a 3-day supply of food and medicine on hand.
  • See the  Centers for Disease Control website  for information on emergency preparedness and response.

Hallucinogens:  Traditional hallucinogens, often referred to as ayahuasca or San Pedro, are often marketed to tourists as “spiritual cleansing” and typically contain dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a strong hallucinogen that is illegal in the United States, Ecuador, and many other countries. Health risks are not well understood, and, on occasion, people suffer serious illness or death after taking these drugs. Intoxicated travelers also have been assaulted and robbed. These incidents often occur a great distance from medical facilities, making the risks even greater.

Galápagos   Islands: Be aware of the following challenges:

  • Many Ecuadorian tour vessels operating in the Galápagos do not meet international safety standards. Inquire about safety features when boarding vessels.
  • The two hospitals on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal Islands do not perform major medical procedures.
  • Serious injury or illness in the Galapagos typically requires medical evacuation to the Ecuadorian mainland or the United States. This can cost $60,000 or more and take significant time to arrange.  We strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance that includes health coverage and air evacuation .
  • There are limited decompression facilities for scuba divers.
  • The Ecuadorian government restricts the entry of certain items into the Galapagos. Visit the  Agency for Biosecurity and Quarantine Regulation and Control for the Galapagos  for more information.

Retiring in Ecuador:  In recent years, Ecuador has become a top overseas destination for retiring U.S. citizens.

  • U.S. citizens have reported unethical practices by lawyers, real estate agents, and others, resulting in costly losses and little hope of remedy through the local judicial system.
  • Ecuadorian rules governing visas and customs are subject to change with little notice.  The Ecuadorian government publishes little information in English. The U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulate General cannot give detailed advice about Ecuadorian immigration law.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report
  • Human Rights Report
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Ecuador.

See   our  LGBTI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:   Travelers with disabilities might have difficulty accessing buildings. Sidewalks in some areas are narrow and poorly maintained.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Ecuador, dial 911.

Ambulance services are:

  • not present throughout the country and unreliable in most areas except Quito.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance, particularly outside of Quito.

Adequate medical and dental care is available in major cities. In smaller communities and in the Galapagos Islands, services are limited, and the quality is generally well below U.S. standards.

  • Ambulance service is limited.
  • Specialized medical care can cost tens of thousands of dollars or is not available.
  • Pharmacies are widely available. However, some medications might not be offered, and brand names will differ from products in the United States. Not all pharmacies purchase medications from pharmaceutical companies that adhere to quality control standards.
  • Exercise caution if you explore herbal and folk remedies.
  • Quito is 9,400 feet above sea level. Some other tourist destinations in the mountainous region may be higher. Consult your doctor for recommendations concerning medication and lifestyle tips at high altitude.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of Ecuador’s  National Customs Service  to ensure the medication is legal in Ecuador.

The following diseases are present:

  • Chagas disease
  • Chikungunya
  • Tuberculosis
  • Yellow fever

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information :

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality : Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Mission in Ecuador maintains a list of doctors and hospitals on its  webpage . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general :

  • Adequate health facilities are available in Quito and Guayaquil but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment “up front” prior to service or admission.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.

  Pharmaceuticals:

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

  • If you are considering traveling to Ecuador to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, see our  ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is legal for foreigners in Ecuador.

Water Quality:

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.
  • Many cities in Ecuador, such as Quito, are at high altitude. Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness, and take precautions before you travel. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Travel to High Altitudes .

Adventure Travel:

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Adventure Travel .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Some roads are poorly maintained and may lack crash barriers, guard rails, signs, and streetlights. Heavy fog and rain make conditions more treacherous.

  • Due to a lack of sidewalks, many roads are also used by pedestrians.
  • Slow-moving buses and trucks frequently stop in the middle of the road unexpectedly.
  • In rural areas, you may encounter livestock in the road.
  • Many vehicles are poorly maintained, and breakdowns are common.

Traffic Laws:

You may use your U.S. driver’s license for up to 90 days. If you are staying in Ecuador longer, you should contact the  National Transit Agency  to obtain a valid driver’s license.

  • Drivers often disobey traffic laws and signals. They rarely yield to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • If you are involved in an accident, even if you are not at fault, you may be taken into police custody,  especially if there are injuries or if you do not have insurance. If the injuries or damages are serious, you may face criminal charges.
  • You might encounter intoxicated drivers. Chances of a drunk-driving accident are higher on weekends and Ecuadorian holidays.
  • If you want to import a vehicle, contact  Ecuador’s National Customs Service  for local regulations. You must pay for local liability insurance, called SPPAT.

Public Transportation: Intra- and inter-city bus passengers are often targets of crime, including robbery and sexual assault.

  • Armed criminals have been known to board local city buses and rob passengers.
  • Numerous bus accidents occur every year in Ecuador. Many buses are overcrowded, poorly maintained, and lack safety features such as seat belts.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Visit the website of Ecuador's  national tourist office  and national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Ecuador’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Ecuador’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Ecuador should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Ecuador Ecotourism Destinations

Ecuador is the ideal Green Travel Destination

It is not for no good reason that Ecuador has been awarded with the World’s Leading Green Destination for two consecutive years. During the international 2016 World Travel Awards, Ecuador managed to earn the title yet again, beating Norway, Costa Rica, Perú among others.

A big sign signals the entrance to the cascades where mild trek (1 hr) will lead you the awesome spot where you can catch a sight of butterflies, birds and jungle vegetation, and even take a well-deserved dip in the cascade. By the way, its quite cheap to get there and perfect for slef-organized excursions.

Yasuní is also home to two indigenous nations each with deep cultural practices which bond to the land, the Kichwa and the Waorani. An amazing site to explore! Given that Yasuní is sucha delicate and virgin ecosystem, specialized Jungle Lodges arrange escorted tours to this location, which keeps tourism regulated.

Breathtaking Cajas is actually easily accessed to, as the main highway from Cuenca to Guayaquil crosses right through the park. The vast wilderness of El Cajas encompasses a unique mix of biodiversity — from high-alpine páramo to cloud forest and humid wetland.  The name of the park comes from the Kichwa word cassa, meaning “gateway to the snowy mountains,” or simply caxa: “cold.” Sounds existing to explore, right?

Traveling to Ecuador as a Green Card Holder from the US

Introduction, applying for a visa, tips for packing, what to expect upon arrival, adjusting to the culture, making friends, getting around, things to do, food and drink, departing ecuador.

If you are a Green Card holder traveling to Ecuador, there are a few things you should know. Read this blog post for more information.

Checkout this video:

Watch this video on YouTube

As a green card holder, you are able to travel to Ecuador for tourism, business, or other purposes. However, there are a few things you need to take into consideration before your trip. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about traveling to Ecuador as a green card holder from the United States.

If you are a Green Card holder from the United States, you will need to apply for a visa before traveling to Ecuador. The process is relatively simple, but it is important to follow the instructions carefully.

First, you will need to submit an application form and supporting documents. These include a recent passport photo, your passport, a copy of your Green Card, and a letter of invitation from someone in Ecuador. You will also need to pay a visa fee.

Once your application is complete, you will need to submit it to the Ecuadorian consulate or embassy nearest you. They will review your application and contact you to schedule an interview. During the interview, consular officers will ask questions about your trip and your background. They may also ask for additional documentation.

Assuming everything goes smoothly, you should receive your Ecuadorian visa within a few weeks. Once you have it, you can start planning your trip!

Because you will be spending time in different types of environments, from the beach to the mountains, it is important to pack a versatile wardrobe. Clothing should be packable, lightweight, and made of natural fabrics that will breathe in the heat and humidity. It is also a good idea to have some clothing that can be layered, in case the temperatures drop in the evening. A swimsuit is essential, as are sunscreen and insect repellent. For footwear, comfortable walking shoes are a must, as well as sandals or flip-flops for the beach.

As a Green Card holder, you will pass through Ecuadorian immigration just like any other foreign national. You’ll need to present your passport, as well as your Green Card, and you may be asked to fill out a landing card. The immigration officer will then stamp your passport and issue you a tourist visa, which allows you to stay in Ecuador for up to 90 days.

Once you’ve cleared immigration, you’ll collect your luggage and go through customs. Customs officials may ask you to open your bags for inspection, so it’s a good idea to have them easily accessible. They may also ask you questions about the items you’re bringing into the country, so be prepared to explain why you’re bringing them and how long you’ll be staying.

After clearing customs, you’ll be able to catch a taxi or bus to your final destination.

If you are a green card holder traveling to Ecuador, it is important to be aware of the cultural differences between the United States and Ecuador. One of the biggest differences is the way that time is viewed. In Ecuador, time is much more flexible and laid back than in the United States. For example, it is not uncommon for friends to show up an hour or two late for a get-together without any explanation or apology.

Another difference is that personal space is not as important in Ecuador. People will often stand close to each other when talking and may even touch each other while conversing. This can be uncomfortable for Americans who are used to more personal space.

In addition, religion plays a big role in daily life in Ecuador. Most of the population is Catholic, and there are many religious festivals and holidays throughout the year. It is not uncommon for businesses to close or have reduced hours during these holidays.

Finally, family is very important in Ecuadorian culture. Extended families often live close to each other and children are expected to respect their elders. It is also common for grown children to take care of their elderly parents.

If you are a Permanent Resident or Green Card holder travelling to Ecuador, you may be wondering how easy it is to make friends in your new home. The good news is that, with a little effort, it should be fairly easy to find friends and build a social life in Ecuador. Here are some tips to get you started:

-Join an English-speaking meetup group. This is a great way to meet people with similar interests. There are groups for all kinds of activities, from hiking and biking to playing strategy games and watching movies.

-Get involved in your community. If you live in an apartment complex, see if there are any activities or events organized by the management. If not, you can start your own! Organize a potluck dinner or game night, for example.

-Take classes. There are plenty of opportunities to take classes in Ecuador, whether you want to learn Spanish, dance salsa, or cook typical Ecuadorian food. Not only will this help you meet people, but it can also help you settle into life in Ecuador more quickly.

With a little effort, you should be able to find friends and build a social life in Ecuador relatively easily.

As a general rule, you can use your U.S. passport to travel to other countries and return to the United States. However, if you are a green card holder, you may not be able to use your passport to return to the United States if: -Your passport has expired -Your passport has been lost or stolen -You are not a U.S. citizen

If any of these apply to you, you will need to get a new passport or apply for a reentry permit before you can return to the United States. You can apply for a new passport at any U.S. Embassy or Consulate abroad. If you are already in Ecuador, you can apply for a reentry permit at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

As a Green Card holder, there are a few things you need to take care of before traveling to Ecuador. First, you need to make sure your Green Card is up-to-date and will not expire during your trip. Second, you will need to get a tourist visa from the Ecuadorian consulate before your trip. The visa costs $30 and is valid for 90 days. You will also need to have proof of onward travel out of Ecuador, such as a return ticket or a ticket to another country. If you plan on staying in Ecuador for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for an extension of your tourist visa. You can do this at any Immigration office in Ecuador. Finally, it is always a good idea to have travel insurance when traveling to any foreign country.

What are some things to eat and drink while in Ecuador?

Some of the staple foods in Ecuador include corn, rice, beans, plantains, yuca (cassava), seafood, chicken, pork, and beef. One of the most popular dishes is ceviche, which is typically made with fish or shrimp that has been marinated in lime juice and served with onions, cilantro (coriander), and chili peppers. Another dish worth trying is hornado, a slow-roasted pork dish that is often served with mote (boiled hominy), potatoes, salad, and llapingachos (potato cakes). For something sweet, try bolon de verde: green plantain dumplings filled with cheese. And of course, no trip to Ecuador would be complete without trying a bowl of fanesca: a soup made with beans, bacalao (dried salt cod), corn, pumpkin, sausage, and hard-boiled eggs.

There are also plenty of things to drink while in Ecuador. Coffee is grown in many parts of the country and you’ll find it served everywhere. Ecuadorian coffee tends to be on the strong side so be sure to ask for it ” Americano” if you want it diluted with water. Another popular drink is colada morada: a purple beverage made with blackberries, purple corn, cinnamon sticks , cloves , allspice , and panela (unrefined whole cane sugar). And don’t forget to try chicha: a fermented maize drink that’s popular among the indigenous people of Ecuador.

All travelers leaving Ecuador must present a valid passport. If you are a green card holder, you will also need to present your green card. Travelers without a valid passport or green card will not be allowed to board their flight.
