ABOUT MORGAN WADE

One of Nashville’s fastest-rising and most critically acclaimed young stars, Morgan Wade released her much-anticipated sophomore album, Psychopath , Aug. 25 via Sony Music Nashville. Possessed with a raw and unflinching voice anchored by a perfect tinge of twang; the rare ability to pen honest portraits of some of life’s most precious and painful and unpredictable moments; and an onstage vulnerability that so seamlessly breaks down the wall between fan and artist, Wade has quickly made her mark on the country music scene — and the music world at large. Her stunning 2021 debut album, Reckless , was hailed as a critical triumph; it topped Rolling Stone ’s Best Country and Americana Albums of 2021, with New York Times noting Wade “sounds like she’s singing from the depths of history.” In 2022, Wade was nominated as the Emerging Act of the Year at the Americana Music Honors & Awards; in 2023, Wade was nominated for New Female Artist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music and performed at major-market festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits.

While Reckless , and particularly its momentous lead single “Wilder Days,” busted down the doors and introduced Wade to a wider listenership, Psychopath is an astounding follow-up statement: the 13-track LP was crafted with the help of some of Nashville’s most extraordinary musical talents, from A-list songwriters (Julia Michaels, Natalie Hemby, Liz Rose, Lori McKenna) to studio musicians as well as Wade’s longtime producer Sadler Vaden. Most excitingly, Psychopath finds Wade peeling back layers of her psyche like never before. “I realized the more authentic you are and the more you pour yourself into your songs, and most importantly if you’re being honest, people will connect to that,” Wade says.  “I want every song to get the credit it deserves.”

Alanis Morissette (born June 1, 1974) is a child actress turned alternative pop rock sensation, known for her candid and emotive delivery, Morissette was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Prior to making waves in the music industry, Morissette had appeared on the children’s television show “You Can’t Do That on Television”. Using money she had earned from the show the young talent recorded her first music demo entitled “Fate Stay With Me” in 1985, when the singer was 11. Three years later Morissette inked a publishing contract and in 1991, after signing with MCA Canada, released her debut album “Alanis”. Produced and co-written by Leslie Howe, the album became a hit in Canada, spawned the singles “Too Hot”, “Walk Away”, and “Feel Your Love”, and led to Morissette winning the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist.

Morissette’s sophomore album “Now Is the Time”, released in 1992, was a more thoughtful and candid album, and featured less pop production work than its predecessor. Despite being popular and producing three Top 40 singles “An Emotion Away”, “No Apologies” and “(Change Is) Never a Waste of Time”, the album was a comparative commercial failure and the singer was dropped from MCA Canada.

After graduating from high school, in liaison with her manager Scott Welsh, Morissette moved to Toronto, Canada, and began recording her third full-length in songwriter and producer Glen Ballard’s studio. By 1995 she had signed a deal with Maverick Records who issued “Jagged Little Pill” internationally in June 1995. The album’s lead single “You Oughta Know” soon got picked up by the relevant and influential Los Angeles, California radio station KROQ-FM, snowballing Morissette to success. The exposure led to heavy rotation on MTV and MuchMusic, and resulted in “Jagged Little Pill” reaching No. 1 in the U.S. Subsequent singles included “All I Really Want”, “Hand in My Pocket” and the instantly recognisable “Ironic”. The album went on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide, was certified 12 times platinum in Canada, and won the singer-songwriter six Juno Awards and four Grammy Awards in 1996.

After a successful tour in support of the album, and a six-week hiatus in India, the singer collaborated with Ringo Starr and Dave Matthews Band before returning to the studio to focus on her follow-up. Released in 1998, “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie” earned the highest first-week sales by any female artist, however failed to live-up to the success of its predecessor. After contributing four tracks to the Jonathan Elias project “The Prayer Cycle” Morissette released the live acoustic album “Alanis Unplugged” and toured alongside Tori Amos.

Morissette’s fifth studio album “Under Rug Swept” once again topped the charts in Canada, this time however the singer wrote and produced the album on her own. Aided by the singles “Hands Clean”, “So Unsexy”, and “Precious Illusions”, the album went platinum in Canada and sold over a million copies in the States. After the live concert DVD “Feast on Scraps” in 2002 the singer went on to release her sixth full-length album “So-Called Chaos” issued in 2004, followed by the acoustic rework of her breakthrough album entitled “Jagged Little Pill Acoustic”. In 2008 Morissette released the album “Flavors of Entanglement” which documented the break-up of her relationship with Ryan Reynolds, followed by “Havoc and Bright Lights” in 2012.

Live reviews

I had an amazing time seeing Alanis Morissette live a couple years ago at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California. She had a large crowd of over 2,000 people completely mesmerized for the whole set, and brought all of us through the whole gamut of emotions. Even though it is a pretty large venue, the layout has everybody pretty close to the stage so it still feels relatively intimate.

I had just gotten out of a long relationship, and so I was particularly fond of her older, angrier material (like "You Oughta Know" and "You Learn"). Still, just like how Alanis Morissette’s music mellowed out as she matured, I felt the emotional scars heal up a bit when her newer music played and gave me a new perspective on things – basically, I felt like she and I connected and she let me know that no matter how awful I was feeling, things would eventually get better.

There is a sort of unfiltered emotional honesty in Alanis Morissette’s music that you just usually don’t get in music, and its rarity makes it that much more special. I highly recommend that everybody go catch Alanis Morissette in concert when you get the chance.

Report as inappropriate

There are few singers who could be said to look at more at home onstage as Alanis Morissette. She moves, dances and skips along with the music as if a woman possessed by the beats and makes her whole performance feel incredibly organic. By this logic, it is difficult for the crowds to sometimes know when to applaud as she is so masterful at merging her extensive discography into one and other that the whole show feels like one fluid piece of pop rock.

Understandably, with a career that spans over twenty years Alanis's sets are large in length yet she shows no sign of wavering on the energy front from the opener of 'I Remain' to the final tones of 'Thank U'. The crowd has a similar level of enthusiasm throughout as Morissette delivers hit after hit and the crowd has the opportunity to sing along to the alt-rock melodies of 'Hands Clean', 'Ironic' and 'You Learn'.

She also has a great rapport with her supportive live band who she introduces and thanks personally. They delight crowds with an angst heavy rendition of 'Uninvited' before leaving her British audience yearning for the Canadian to visit more regularly.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Alanis, her life seems very spiritual and peaceful these days, so part of me thought this could be a quite acoustic gig with alanis sat on a stool telling us how good life is,

Well I couldn’t have been more wrong, this was full on rock & roll, she played, along with her amazing group of musicians, every thing I wanted, powerful, louder and heavier than I imagined, She played a set lasting nearly 2 hours, and through out she had a great smile on her face looking like she was enjoying the show as much as everyone in the audience, one of the best live performances I have seen,

She looks amazing too, loving the short hair

Anyone going Friday have a great night

One of the best concerts I’ve been to in my entire life, Alanis’s jagged Little pill was the soundtrack to my childhood and early teens, it was so emotionally and spiritually fulfilling to be in her presence along with thousands of other singing our hearts out to every word of her songs it was an incredible night that I will never forget

Second time seeing Alanis live and wow, I was blown away. She's just phenomenal. No words to describe this show. She sang acoustic versions of the full Jagged Little Pill plus a few songs from her other albums. Can't wait to see her in London again this September.

Alanis Morissette was in top form and delivered a great show but Ravinia has lost a step..... the sound was simply awful and the crowd didn't seem to understand there was a great artist on stage. I probably will never go back to Ravinia given these two facts.

tim-clue’s profile image

Saw her in Amsterdam for the acoustic version of Jagged little pill. I have always been a fan, but I had no idea how amazing her voice is in a small intimate setting, even sometimes surpassing the studio versions. All I can say it was amazing.

Breath taking concert... as a huge fan I expected two more songs but all of was amazing!!! I had great seat and the place looks like the set of the mtv unplugged. I went back to the 90s. PERFECTION!

Awesome concert, her voice was solid, it was as if I traveled in a time machine. The band was great as well. Enjoyed the whole show from beginning to end.

Alanis Morissette

You oughta know … that Alanis Morissette is hitting the road this year. The seven-time Grammy winner unveiled the North American and European dates for her Jagged Little Pill  anniversary tour Tuesday (March 8). The new dates are a continuation of her 2021 trek celebrating the 25th anniversary of her breakthrough album.

Morissette’s 1995 hit record Jagged Little Pill skyrocketed the now 47-year-old to rock ‘n’ roll icon status. The album reigned at No. 1 for 12 weeks on the Billboard 200, and at age 21, she became the youngest artist at the time to take home album of the year at the Grammys in 1996. That type of global success means there’s much to celebrate — which is exactly what Morissette plans to do starting June 9 in Copenhagen. Joined by Beth Orton , the tour will spend the month setting up shop at venues in the U.K., Netherlands, France, Ireland and Germany.

Rock band Garbage will then swap in as special guests for the North American leg of the tour, with Morissette making several stops in Canada before weaving her way across the United States. Garbage also joined the “Thank U” singer on last year’s expedition, which concluded its U.S. leg with two nights at the Hollywood Bowl. Billboard  attended the tour’s second evening at the venue, where Morissette put on display her powerful, “crystal-clear” vocals and tendency of updating lyrics to fit life as she knows it in the 2020s.

Though audiences can almost certainly expect Morissette to perform the Jagged Little Pill  hits such as “You Oughta Know” and “Hand in My Pocket” that made her a household name, there’s likely to be at least one new piece of music to sing along to. Morissette’s tour announcement comes just before her new song “Olive Branch” arrives this Friday (March 11).

Tickets for the newly announced tour dates go on sale on her website on Friday, starting at 10 a.m. local time. See her announcement at the tour dates below:

The 20 concert tours you can't miss in 2024

Whether a fan of rock, pop, country, rap, hip hop, or just about every other style of music, there is something for everyone when it comes to the 2024 concert scene. Here are our 20 top tours to check out this year.

Bad Bunny ("Most Wanted" Tour)

The experimentally creative and original sounds (Latin pop, Jersey club, reggaeton, house) of Bad Bunny, who may or may not be back with Kendall Jenner, gets the highly anticipated "Most Wanted" tour underway Feb. 21, at Salt Lake City. In support of 2023's Billboard  200 No. 1 album Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana, paced by top-10 hits "Where She Goes" and "Monaco," the North American Tour runs through the end of May. Bad Bunny's live shows have been described as a true experience that music fans of any genre should be able to appreciate.

Blink-182 ("One More Time Tour")

With the classic lineup of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker in tow, Blink will touring North America this summer in support of One More Time... (2023) , the band's first studio release since 2019, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard  Hot 100. The popular pop-punk trio broke back on the scene after making a surprise appearance last year at Coachella   and playing the "When We Were Young Festival." Following stops in Australia and New Zealand, Blink-182 will play shows in Argentina, Peru and Mexico before the 30-city run through the United States and Canada kicks off June 20 at Orlando, Fla.

Zach Bryan ("The Quittin' Time Tour")

This country crooner is going to be pretty busy in 2023. Since the release of his self-titled fourth studio album (which includes the Billboard  Hot 100 No. 1 single "I Remember Everything, "  which features Kacey Musgraves) last August, Bryan has fans all excited for this hotly anticipated 53-date, concert tour that begins in Chicago on March 6 and is not scheduled to finish up until he plays back-to-back nights (Dec. 18-19) in Brooklyn. If Bryan alone is not enough of a draw, Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are slated to make guest appearances during the run.

Busta Rhymes ("Blockbusta Tour")

This year presents the opportunity take in one of rap's all-time greats in Busta Rhymes, However, the window to catch this legendary performer is not very big. Supporting 2023's acclaimed Blockbusta   album, Rhymes is cramming in 24 dates over roughly a 1.5-month span. It all starts March 13 in San Francisco and is slated to end in Brooklyn on April 21. When it comes to old-school rap and hip hop, Busta Rhymes is a must-see, especially as a history lesson for newer, younger fans of the genres.

Kenny Chesney ("Sun Goes Down Tour”)

When it comes to hosting a summer musical party, Chesney is a great host. That's why there's likely plenty of fun to be had when Chesney takes the stage this year for a monster stadium tour. More than 20 stops are scheduled, hitting some of America's biggest venues, like the April 20 opener at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium, Chicago's Soldier Field, AT&T Stadium in suburban Dallas and SoFi Stadium in the greater Los Angeles proper. The Zac Brown Band will tag along for fun, making this a must-see concert event for country music fans.

Creed ("Summer of ‘99" cruise and tour)

The second half of 2023 brought plenty of buzz about a Creed reunion. Then came word a full-blown tour would follow, so fans of the giant, alternative power pop-rock act from the mid-to-late 1990s should be ecstatic. Beginning July 17 in Green Bay, Wis., Creed is slated to play 40 cities throughout North America . Before then, however, Scott Stapp, Mark Tremonti and Co., which produced hits like “Higher,” “With Arms Wide Open” and “My Sacrifice," will headline their first shows together in more than a decade via April's Summer of ’99 cruise. Opening acts on selected dates include fellow prominent 1990s/2000s acts 3 Doors Down, Daughtry and Tonic.

Dan + Shay ("The Heartbreak On The Map Tour")

This three-time Grammy Award-winning country-rock duo takes to the road for a 19-city tour that supports 2023's   Bigger Houses .  While the bloom might be somewhat have come off the Dan + Shay rose in turns of overwhelming country popularity, this is still one solid live act to see. Known for their high-energy sets, the boys deliver the goods every time out, and this year should be no different. The fun begins Feb. 29 in Greenville, S.C., and ends in Boston on April 13.

Drake ("It’s All A Blur - Big As The What? Tour")

One of the hardest working performers in the entertainment industry, Drake's "It's All A Blur" tour will be going strong again this year. Supporting 2023's   For All the Dogs   and collaborative album with rapper   21 Savage,   Her Loss   (2022), the tour began last summer, and will conclude in March of this year, with dates mostly in the Midwest and Southeast. For 2024, J. Cole will join Drake, who continues put on noteworthy live sets that truly show off his versatility as one of the top rap/hip hop acts in the world. The 2024 run of the tour features several two-night stints in cities such as New Orleans, Nashville, and Columbus, Ohio.

Green Day ("The Saviors Tour")

This is going to be a massive year for Green Day, and The Saviors Tour should be one big party. In addition to supporting the band's 14th studio release, Saviors  (officially dropped on Jan. 19), which includes already popular singles "The American Dream Is Killing Me" and " Look Ma, No Brains! ," the band is celebrating the 20th anniversary release of American Idiot and 30 years of Dookie . The tour kicks off in Europe in late May 30, then opens in North America in late July and concludes in San Diego on Sept. 29. The Hives are among the opening acts in Europe, with Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas supporting in the U.S. and Canada.

Hootie and the Blowfish ("Summer Camp with Trucks" tour)

Middle-aged, former fraternity and sorority members have reason to rejoice. Grammy Award-winning Hootie and the Blowfish will embark on their first full-blown tour since 2019, and ready to crank out singalong, college-bar favorites like " Hold My Hand " and "Only Wanna Be with You," Darius Rucker and Co, are set to play 43 cities across America and Canada, beginning in Dallas on May 30. Tour stops include famous venues such as Boston's Fenway Park and two shows in Columbia, S.C., where the band was formed while its members attended the University of South Carolina.

Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and Ricky Martin ("he Trilogy Tour")

The first of two different concert runs known as "The Trilogy Tour" that we will highlight on this list. In this case, it's three of the biggest multigenerational pop stars in Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull and Ricky Martin. The first leg of the tour, from 2023 drew rave reviews, notably for the immense talent that these three high-energy performers possess. For, 2024, the trio is back on the road with 18 scheduled U.S. dates, beginning Jan, 30 in Fresno, Calif. The tour will run through early March.

Madonna ("The Celebration Tour")

The Material Girl's first retrospective tour, spanning four-decades of pop musical excellence, started with European dates in 2023, and concluded the year with dates in New York City and Washington D.C. For 2024, the tour resides in North America, and began in early January with a pair of Boston shows . A true musical, visual and conceptional experience for fans of Madonna, or just mainstream music in general, is slated to run through late April. Madonna is a once-in-a-lifetime performer to see live, and this tour encapsulates the best of her best.

Melanie Martinez ("The Trilogy Tour")

Celebrating all three of her studio albums — Cry Baby (2015), K–12   (2019), Portals (2023) — Martinez's world of avant-garde/alternative pop will be on full display. While the ever-versatile Martinez has enjoyed consistent success through her music (" Dollhouse ," "Pity Party," etc), it's the visual concept that keeps fans talking about her live shows. Particularly on her 2023 single "Death," where one could see a physical metamorphosis on stage . Martinez's tour starts in Asia in mid January, then heads to Australia before residing in the U.S. through June.

Metallica ("M72 World Tour")

Metallica's 72 Seasons  was released in April 2023 to much fanfare, and the "M72 World Tour," which featured two nights of non-repeat setlists, kicked off shortly after and spanned Europe and North America. Now, the 2024 leg of the tour gets going in May, in Europe. It then will begin a North American run on Aug. 2 in Foxborough, Mass. Mammoth WVH, Pantera, Volbeat, Greta Van Fleet and Five Finger Death Punch have, and will continue to serve, as opening acts for Metallica. While Metallica can no longer deliver blistering 2.5- to 3-hour sets, the variety of the setlists spanning two nights makes up.

Nicki Minaj ("Pink Friday 2 World Tour")

Supporting her 2023 album Pink Friday 2,  Nicki Minaj is set to embark on her first concert tour since 2019 . In what should be quite the live experience, with plenty going on onstage — and if we're lucky, a healthy dose of drama off it — Minaj's 2024 shows begin March 1 in Oakland. The run will remain in North America through May 12. From there, Nicki heads to Europe, where she will play five countries before the leg is scheduled to end on June 9 in Paris.

Alanis Morissette ("The Triple Moon Tour")

The queen of '90s, Gen X angst, Alanis toured on the 25th anniversary of her 1995   Jagged Little Pill   in recent years, but that was interrupted by COVID-19 and then picked up again. Now, for 2024, she's back on the road — with the legendary Joan Jett helping out — for a 30-plus city tour spanning parts of June, July and August. Morissette has been visible in recent years, thus garnering interest from a new generation of fans who appreciate the social brilliance of Generation X.

Rolling Stones ("Hackney Diamonds" Tour)

Mick and Keith are both 80 years old and Ronnie Wood is 76, but the trio that currently makes up the Rolling Stones official lineup is scheduled to play 19 shows (in 16 scheduled cities) this year from late April to mid-July of this year. And we expect the energy level to be on high. While the band will play numbers from 2023's Hackney Diamonds , including the Grammy Award-nominated " Angry ," we know fans will hear plenty of those legendary classics such as "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

Olivia Rodrigo ("GUTS World Tour")

Is Olivia Rodrigo the Alanis Morrissette of Gen Z? Talk amongst yourselves about that. What we do know is that Rodrigo's GUTS Tour, in support of her second studio release, Guts , from 2023 is one of the most anticipated concert experiences of the 2024. With plenty of pop angst and balladry for a new generation, the tour starts in Palm Springs, Calif., on Feb. 23, and runs through North America until early April. Then later that month, the tour picks up in Europe and moves throughout that continent until coming back to the U.S. for July and August. The Breeders are slated to open for Rodrigo on certain dates.

Sleater-Kinney

For those fans of alternative, indie or punk rock, do yourself a favor and check out Sleater-Kinney on tour in 2024. Sure, legendary alt drummer Janet Weiss is no longer in the band, but Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker consistently deliver some of the most memorable rock shows around. In support of its 14th studio album Little Rope  (2024), which already has fists pumping to “ Hell ” and “Say It Like You Mean It," Sleater-Kinney takes to the road for a North American tour in late February, which runs through early April .

Taylor Swift (“The Eras Tour”)

Yes, it's still not done. In 2023, Swift became the first artist to put on a tour that surpassed $1 billion in revenue. And, that was just one portion of "The Eras Tour," which is sure to be the hottest international concert ticket in 2024, as well. This year's run begins in Japan on Feb. 7, then heads to Australia and Europe before returning to America in mid-October for stops in Miami, New Orleans and Indianapolis. Now, for those who didn't score tickets and aren't willing to pay to ridiculous prices on the secondary market, then there's always   T he Eras Tour Concert Film to fall back on.

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Tegan and Sara, Alanis Morissette, Carly Rae Jepsen, More Sign Letter Protesting Anti-Trans Legislation in Canada

By Nina Corcoran

Tegan and Sara

Tegan and Sara are spearheading an open letter campaign that opposes anti-transgender legislation in Canada. The letter, which was created by the duo’s foundation for LGBTQ+ equality and justice, was published on March 31 in observation of the International Transgender Day of Visibility. Over 400 artists have signed the letter, including Alanis Morissette, Carly Rae Jepsen, Neil Young, Elvis Costello, Feist, Mac DeMarco, Pup, Peaches, and Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew.

“The anti-trans policies taking root in Canada go beyond discrimination – they present a clear risk to the mental and physical well-being of trans individuals throughout the country,” the letter reads . “As artists, we know the danger of a social and political environment that restricts expression, exploration, individuality and self-determination. We want to keep living in a world that celebrates the beauty of difference, because difference and art go hand in hand. We also believe in the power of using our voices for those who aren’t being heard.”

The long list of artists who signed their name in support of Tegan and Sara’s initiative also includes Buffy Sainte-Marie, Metric, Julie Doiron, Andy Shauf, Backxwash, Owen Pallett, Badbadnotgood, Rufus Wainwright, K.D. Lang, Allison Russell, Sum 41, Stars, Metz’s Hayden Menzies, Alexisonfire, Ryan Hemsworth, Tokyo Police Club, the Rural Alberta Advantage’s Amy Cole, Chad VanGaalen, Chet Porter, Coeur de Pirate, and Jasmyn.

Currently, anti-trans legislation has not been signed into law in Canada, but various policies have been proposed in a handful of provinces. In February, Alberta premier Danielle Smith proposed bans on gender-affirming healthcare for trans youth, such as hormonal treatment and gender-confirmation surgery, reports CBC . Smith also submitted proposals about parental notification policies for students changing their name or pronouns, and a ban on trans women competing in women’s sports leagues.

Months prior, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan announced that parental consent is required before schools can honor the chosen names and pronouns of children under the age of 16. “The government should never put themselves between parents, their kids, and evidence-based healthcare and supports,” the Tegan and Sara Foundation’s open letter continues. “We are trending towards more harmful anti-trans legislation in Canada, and we call on our communities and local and national policymakers to put a stop to this concerning surge in anti-trans policy.”

Live Nation cutting back concerts at Lakewood Amphitheatre in favor of Ameris

Imagine Dragons rocked Lakewood Amphitheatre on Tuesday, August 30, 2022 on their Mercury Tour. Macklemore opened the show.

For decades, Lakewood Amphitheatre was the most popular outdoor amphitheater for summer acts that could sell at least 10,000 tickets and up to 19,000. A-list performers such as Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift, the Dave Matthews Band and Van Halen have performed there.

But in recent years, the space has seen more tumbleweeds than concertgoers.

In 2013, Lakewood operator Live Nation hosted 22 concerts there and as recently as 2018, 21 concerts. By last year, Lakewood only held 12 concerts. This year, while more dates may be announced, the concert promoter has only five concerts scheduled so far at Lakewood: two hip-hop, one R&B and two rock shows.

In comparison, Live Nation is relying heavily on Ameris Bank Amphitheatre 28 miles north in Alpharetta. Last year, Ameris hosted 38 concert dates. This year, Live Nation has already announced 44 concert dates for Ameris, the most ever in the venue’s 16-year history, with a potpourri of country, pop and rock acts such as Judas Priest, Creed, Alanis Morissette and Lainey Wilson.

Pitbull and Iggy Azalea energized sold out Ameris Bank Amphitheatre on Thursday, October 13, 2022 on the Can't Stop Us Now Tour.
Robb Cohen for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The two venues have virtually the same number of seats: 7,000 each. The big difference is the lawn. Lakewood could fit up to 12,000 on its lawn while Ameris accommodates 5,000. Lakewood prohibits chairs on the lawn while Ameris allows what it describes on its website as “low-profile chairs.”

Live Nation, by far the largest concert promoter in Atlanta and the nation, does not own either property. Instead, the Beverly Hills, California-based company has long-term leases with the property owners. In the case of Lakewood, the city of Atlanta owns the property and its lease with Live Nation runs through 2034. Ameris is owned by Woodruff Arts Center, which signed a 20-year deal in 2016 with Live Nation to take over booking acts there.

Live Nation declined to respond to numerous queries about its booking strategies at the two venues. Spokespeople at Woodruff Arts Center did not respond to questions regarding its relationship with Live Nation. A spokesman for the City of Atlanta didn’t provide any comment, either.

Lakewood isn’t particularly beloved by many long-time concertgoers.

John Deushane, an Alpharetta resident and 67-year-old former TV executive who goes to 30 concerts a year, vastly prefers Ameris over Lakewood. The last time he attended Lakewood was in 2014 to see Bruce Springsteen and vowed never to return.

“I’ve long said I will only attend a concert at Lakewood when all four Beatles reunite or it’s the second coming of Jesus Christ,” Deushane said, describing the venue “rundown, dirty, disgusting.”

In comparison, he likes that Ameris has free parking, good acoustics and multiple concession areas run by charity groups but since Live Nation took over in 2016, he said “all prices have skyrocketed” and you can no longer avoid handling fees by buying tickets at the venue.

For many residents in the suburbs, there are more options than ever to see summer concerts, such as the Fred in Peachtree City , Stockbridge Amphitheater in Stockbridge and Mable House Amphitheatre in Mableton , without having to negotiate the traffic to get to Lakewood.

It also doesn’t help that the Lakewood area neighborhood has not seen the level of development that some other parts of the city have attracted.

Jeremy Hill, a concert promoter who books Mable House largely with R&B, hip hop and jazz acts, said “some patrons are not comfortable going to that part of town.”

Jeff Clark, who used to run the popular local music magazine Stomp and Stammer, said Ameris is located in a far more desirable area with “numerous restaurants and hotels nearby and it’s closer to most of the fans who’ll be attending those shows.”

“To me, it’s similar to the Braves moving to Cobb,” Clark added, referencing the Atlanta Braves leaving the Summerhill neighborhood in Southeast Atlanta to the Cumberland neighborhood 10 miles northwest in 2017.

Located on a 60-acre tract at the old Lakewood Fairgrounds, Lakewood Amphitheatre was built for $14 million and opened in 1989 with about 20 concerts including Al Jarreau, Elton John, George Strait, Bon Jovi and Tom Petty. Politicians in the city at the time touted its arrival as way to boost that southern part of the city.

“It was the city’s first big mega-amphitheater shed” featuring covered seating, Clark said. “It was a big deal back then. Any big acts touring in the summer played there.”

At the time, Lakewood’s nearest outdoor concert competitors were Chastain Park (6,900 capacity) and Six Flags Over Georgia’s Southern Star Amphitheater (12,000), which required park admission, had no shaded seating and was eventually torn down in 2013.

Different promoters handled Lakewood’s bookings in its early years. Live Nation has been operating Lakewood since 2006 when it purchased HOB Entertainment .

Live Nation also has a long-term lease agreement with Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park, which currently has 15 concerts lined up this year including Sarah McLachlan, Bush, Vampire Weekend and Billy Currington. Last year, Chastain held 28 concerts.

According to an audit the city of Atlanta did in 2020 , Live Nation pays the city of Atlanta an $11,000 a month base rent for Lakewood. It also provides the city 3% of ticket sales and 4% of other revenues like food and parking. The current user agreement has been in place since 2009.

Between 2016 and 2022 (excluding the pandemic year of 2020), the city received an average of $578,000 a year from Live Nation for its use of Lakewood, according to data provided by the city. Live Nation had not paid their share in 2023 yet.

Lakewood has also gone through multiple corporate name changes. For many years, Coca-Cola attached its name to Lakewood, followed by HiFi Buys, Aaron’s and Cellairis. Since 2021, Live Nation has not procured naming rights for the venue, which is now just called Lakewood. (The Cellairis name remains on the highway signs on I-75/85.) The city of Atlanta would receive 10% of the net proceeds of naming rights revenue if Live Nation had a corporate sponsor.

The contract with Chastain is different from that of Lakewood featuring a flat annual base rent, an $8 per ticket surcharge, 50% of net proceeds from naming rights and one-third of parking revenue. Chastain generated more income for the city of Atlanta than Lakewood in all non-pandemic years from 2016 through 2022, averaging more than $840,000 a year.

Clark said it’s not surprising Live Nation so far has booked just two hip hop shows and two rock shows on top of a 1990s-era R&B show at Lakewood, given the younger and more diverse demographics in the heart of Atlanta compared to Alpharetta and surrounding areas.

This year’s only scheduled concerts so far at Lakewood so far are 21 Savage, T-Pain with T.I., 30 Seconds to Mars, Xscape with SWV and Five Finger Death Punch. A June 8 concert with Boogie Wit Da Hoodie was cancelled in late March without explanation .
