We love rafting. Point blank. Given that Ricky was a white water rafting guide and safety kayaker on Costa Rica’s Pacuare River for more than six years, you can imagine how much of a passion we have developed for the activity (don’t miss the photos of some of our most extreme white water rafting trips in Costa Rica provided in our related blog post White Water Rafting Costa Rica: Go Big Or Go Home , or our description of the Costa Rica rafting community we are proud to be a part of in our related blog post The Pacuare River Family ). You can also imagine how impossible it would be for us to identify one Costa Rica river over others without imposing our own bias when we respond to questions such as “Which is the best river for rafting in Costa Rica?” However, personal bias aside, it is important to note that our love for the Pacuare River exceeds our personal experience. It is rooted in fact; specifically, the fact that the river’s rapids are some of the best in the country, the fact that the trip includes complimentary transportation between popular areas such as San Jose, La Fortuna/Arenal, and Puerto Viejo, and the fact that National Geographic once identified the river as one of the best in the world for river scenery (learn more about the Pacuare River experience in our related blog post The Pacuare River Rafting Tour ). But, all accomplishments and accolades aside, here’s the truth: as appealing as the Pacuare River is, if a run down this particular river does not fit with your trip itinerary, your desired river/rapid level, your children’s ages, or your vacation budget, there are many other worthwhile river trips in Costa Rica to choose from.

In our blog post Where To Go In Costa Rica: Determining The Best Places To Visit During Your Trip we explain that the only person who can decide which Costa Rican destinations are the “best” to visit is the person doing the visiting. Similarly, in our posts When Is The Best Time Of Year To Travel To Costa Rica? , Best Ziplines In Costa Rica: Comparing 6 In Arenal And Monteverde , Best Hanging Bridges In Costa Rica: Comparing 4 In Arenal And Monteverde , The Best Costa Rica Volcanoes: What To Know About Arenal, Irazu, Poas, Rincon De La Vieja, And Turrialba , and Best Hot Springs In Arenal: We Compare All 12 La Fortuna Hot Springs , we argue that it is up to travellers to decide for themselves when they should travel to Costa Rica and which tours they would enjoy the most. In each case, although we aim to provide travellers with as many details as possible so they can make informed decisions regarding their trip, we are hesitant to pinpoint the “best” of anything, as doing so would only overshadow our clients’ unique interests, desires, and needs with our own opinions.

So, in true Costa Rica Travel Blog  style, below is a list of some of the most popular rivers for rafting in Costa Rica that visitors can choose from. The list includes both rivers for white water rafting and flat rivers where safari float tours (slow-moving rafting tours) are run.

Excellent and informative post! Thanks for all the details!

Awesome ! I rafted the Rio Toro around 5 years ago now with a bunch of girlfriends and we had an absolute blast. Our guide was incredible. The fact that I ended up in the water twice made it even more fun ! A hilariously good time ! A definite highlight of my trip to Costa Rica !

fotogfoodie – Thanks so much for the comment! We LOVE your blog – it makes us want to cook, eat, dine out, dine in, and take up photography all in one. Not to mention… add apples to our french toast ASAP! 😉 Pura vida!

A tale or two to tell….. – That sounds like so much fun (travelling with a group of friends and keeping the great rafting experience as a memory of it!)! The guides in Costa Rica are… you said it… incredible. The majority truly love their jobs and love making travellers smile. Most Ticos (Costa Ricans) are proud of where they come from, and guiding is one way they can share the love they have for their country with others. Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us! 🙂 Pura vida!

Gracias! It really means a lot to me that people enjoy the stuff I post. Helps keep me motivated. I love your blog as well, gives the travel exactly the information they need!

fotogfoodie – We truly do! We visited your blog again today and love the free eBook hook-up. We are a travel-themed blog, however everyone has to eat, so we don’t mind linking back to your post! http://fotogfoodie.wordpress.com/2013/01/18/5-ingredients-in-10-minutes-free-ebook/ original source: http://thestonesoup.com/blog/# Pura vida!

The Rivers of Costa Rica

Río toro river.

Also known as Bull River, it can be a rough river with rapids ranging from Class II to Class IV. It isn’t for the faint of heart but a thrill seeking beginner or a more experienced rafter would take great pleasure in being able to ride some of the best rapids in all of Costa Rica.

The majority of the journey down river is a constant flow through Class III and Class IV rapids with a few Class II thrown in to allow you a short break to catch your breath.

Whitewater Rafting Combo Tour

Río Toro is a great place for visitors seeking adventure and looking to avoid dull moments of simply floating down stream.

After you finish rafting down Bull River, you can stop and visit the beautiful sights of the tropical forest that surrounds the river. Between the exotic wildlife, towering waterfalls, and natural hot springs, it’s sure to be a trip that won’t easily be forgotten.

Pacuare River

The Pacuare river stretches for 18 miles, cutting a winding, curving path through the beautiful and lush rain forest. Over the course of the 18 miles of river, you will travel through more than 50 different rapids.

Though the rapids in this river aren’t extremely intense or difficult to travel through, with such a large number of rapids over such a long distance, you will be sure to be exhausted and ready for a nice long nap at the end of your adventure.

Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica

But don’t let being tired stop you from enjoying the beauty of the rain forest. With amazingly beautiful plants and animals combined with the complete isolation from city life, you will find it easy to relax and enjoy every moment from the minute you arrive to the time you leave to go home.

This is a great river for beginners and experienced rafters a like. The long journey down river makes it a challenge but with many easier rapids, instead of a few intense rapids, you will have plenty of time to just relax with bursts of excitement here and there.

Reventazón River

This river is divided into two different sections, Pascua and Florida, and is known for being probably one of the most difficult and challenging rivers in all of Costa Rica.

Year around, even during the dry seasons, this river still manages to have high water levels with a seemingly constant supply of white water.

Rafting Reventazon River Class II - III from San Jose

Choosing between with the Pascua or Florida part of the river may be difficult because both provide an awesome white water adventure, consisting mostly of Class III rapids throughout the entire journey down river.

This is a great river to visit any time of year and is definitely a must raft river, especially for those experienced riders looking for the next best rapids.

Sarapiquí River

This river is divided into three parts. Combined, the river covers 35 kilometers through the rain forest. In some sections of this river, there are quite a few Class IV and Class V rapids that will bring excitement and joy to even the more experienced rafters.

That isn’t to say that isn’t a great place for beginners as well, other places on the river have much calmer Class III and lower rapids, as well as calm water that are perfect for enjoying the scenery.

Sarapiquí White Water Rafting Tour

The Sarapiquí River is known for its scenery and many people also call it the scenic river. With something for rafters of all experience levels, as well as animal lovers, bird watchers and fans of nature, this river is a great place to visit while you are in Costa Rica.

Corobicí River

This is the perfect river for beginners with fast flowing water, and an array of Class I and Class II rapids. If you are looking for a nice relaxing and tranquil trip down the river this is a great place for the whole family, with rapids even small enough for the kids to enjoy.

Class III White Water Rafting Half Day Arenal

Since the water is constantly moving, there is very little need to paddle so you and the kids can enjoy the beauty of the nature that surrounds the river. If you are lucky, you might even get a chance to see some wildlife in the process.

Things to Know About White Water Rafting in Costa Rica

One of the most important things to remember in rafting is to always put safety first. Rafting is fun but even on smaller rapids you can be in for a bumpy ride.

If you are new to rafting it is important that you go with an experienced rafter, preferably a river guide whose job and main goal are to keep you safe. Here are a few other things you should know before you hop on a raft:

ALWAYS Listen to Your Guide

Your guide is there to keep you safe and make sure you have a fun and memorable experience but they are also there to get you home safely so that you are able to share stories of those experiences with your friends and family. Even if you have been doing this for years, you still need to listen to your guide.

When they are explaining safety to you before you start down river, in calm waters and especially when you are going through a rapid. They will explain important commands and things that you need to know to keep you and your fellow rafters safe.

Wear Your Protective Gear

You will be given a life jacket and a helmet – it is critical that you wear these at all times. Even a world class swimmer should wear this gear.

Water is a powerful force of nature and if you get knocked out of the raft for any reason, you will be thankful you have your gear on.

Even if it is a little bulky and uncomfortable, it is definitely better than cracking your head against a rock or getting pulled under a big wave. Be smart and be safe – wear your helmet and life jacket.

Don’t Panic

The MOST important thing to remember: DON’T PANIC! Especially if you fall out of the raft. If you panic, you are just wasting time that you could be spending reacting to the situation. Remain calm and always revert back to rule number one under things to know: ALWAYS listen to your guide!

4 Tips for Beginner White Water Rafters

Here are a few helpful tips and things to remember:

1. Dress the Part

You aren’t going for a Sunday stroll through the park and you are definitely going to get wet. You will want to wear clothes and shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. For the ladies, a swimsuit with a t-shirt and shorts is perfect for clothing.

Gentlemen, you can wear your swim trunks and a t-shirt. Water shoes, or something like outdoor sandals are probably your best bet. You want something that will stay on your feet so no flip-flops, or you might be going home without shoes.

Also remember, you will be wearing a life jacket so you probably won’t want to go shirtless or only wearing a bikini top because the life jacket might rub against exposed skin and cause irritation.

2. Wear Sunscreen

I cannot stress this enough. Even if it is an overcast or cloudy day, sunscreen is a must! You need a nice heavy duty waterproof sunscreen, at least SPF 30+ but SPF 50+ is preferred.

Cover any and everywhere that there is exposed skin. Your face, ears and neck are the most obvious places but if you are wearing shorts that expose your knees, put sunscreen on your knees as well.

Other areas to consider are arms and shoulders, the tops of your feet if they are exposed, your chest and any area that isn’t covered by your life jacket.

3. Be Careful What Your Bring in the Raft

Don’t bring anything with your that you won’t mind getting wet or even possibly floating down river without you.

Cellphones, money, credit cards, cameras, water bottles, sunglasses, or anything else you might consider taking with you should be sealed in a waterproof container and safely secured.

Things of value are probably best left hidden away in your car and some rafting places even provide storage lockers you can put your personally belongings in. If you are going to take a camera, think about taking one of the waterproof GoPro cameras.

Whatever you do take with you on the raft make sure that it is securely attached to your person. If you were to fall out of the raft, jump out of the raft to go for a swim, or even just be hit by a big rapid, you don’t want your things to get washed away from you before you can grab them.

4. Talk to your Guide

Make sure your guide knows your experience level, and if you are afraid of going on the rapids, make them aware. The last thing you want to do is end up in the middle of a Class V rapid frozen in fear.

Rafting is fun but if your guide isn’t aware of your feelings, experience and expectations, it can put not only you but everyone in the raft with you in danger.

You don’t want to attempt rapids that you aren’t ready for yet. If you are new to rafting take it slow, work your way up. Even if you stick to Class II and Class III rapids, it will still be a thrilling journey down river.

Best Time for White Water Rafting in Costa Rica

The best time of the year for rafting kind of depends on your preference. If you are interested in a more intense rafting experience, you will probably want to go during the rainy season.

This is generally between June and October. The rapids tend to be slightly more intense during this time of the year because water levels are higher.

If you prefer a more relaxed rafting experience or you are a beginner, just looking to get your feet a little wet, you should probably go during the drier season.

A great way of trying white water rafting is combining it with a yoga retreat !

When water levels are lower due to less rainfall, the rapids aren’t usually as intense as they would be during a wet season. The dry season in Costa Rica is usually between December and April.

Ready to Go?

I don’t know about you but I am certainly ready to book a ticket to Costa Rica and check out the rapids. Thinking about the beautiful places, with various classes of rapids in another country just gets my adrenaline pumping. Start planning your next vacation to go rafting in Costa Rica!

I hope this guide was helpful for finding the best white water rafting tours in Costa Rica to suite your experience level. If you want to comment or recommend a river or tour I didn’t include, please use my contact form to get in touch.  Have fun and be safe out there!

White Water Rafting in Costa Rica: 16 Best Tours and Tips

White water rafting in Costa Rica is the perfect way to combine thrilling adventure with beautiful landscape views.

One of the many great things about rafting in Costa Rica is that there are rapids for all skill levels throughout the country. Whether you are rafting for the first time or even a seasoned rafter, there are options for you!

We love white water rafting day tours in Costa Rica because they are typically a full-day experience with transportation and lunch included. In our experience, the guides are usually excellent and you might see some wildlife as well.

So, are you ready to find the perfect white water rafting in Costa Rica adventure for your next vacation? Let’s get to it!

White Water Rafting Info

white water rafting costa rica

In Costa Rica, there are rapids for all skill levels. If you are new to rafting, the levels are divided like this:

Class I-II

Level I to II rapids are perfect for everyone. This is more like a float down a river with paddling and guided wildlife info.

Class II-III

Levels II and III rapids are doable for the whole family. This is a good combo of easy float and a few mild rapids which will still provide a good level of exhilaration.

Class III-IV

Class III and IV rapids is when things get more intense. A trip on these rapids tends to include more rapids, bigger drops, and tons of exhilaration.

We don’t recommend class IV if you are not physically fit, experienced in rafting, and ready for some serious tough paddling.

Best Places for Rafting Day Trips

rafting costa rica

There are multiple places to raft in Costa Rica. Here are a few of the very best spots.

Multi Day Rafting Trips

pacuera

A multi day rafting trip is a great way to see the Costa Rican landscape in a way most tourists don’t get to experience.

These rafting trips are a combo of adventure, wildlife watching, meeting new people, embracing the Costa Rican landscape, and more.

The most common place to take a multi-day rafting trip is along the Pacuare River.

This whitewater river runs approximately 67 miles (108 km) into the Caribbean. It’s a great area for spotting birds, monkeys, ocelots, and if you are really lucky you may even spot a jaguar.

We have a few recommendations for multi day rafting adventures.

You’ll definitely sleep good that night!

White Water Rafting Transfers

rafting costa rica

I’m a huge fan of adventure transfers in Costa Rica. It’s the perfect way to travel from one location to the next.

Basically how it works is that lets say you need to take a shuttle from La Fortuna to Puerto Viejo. Instead of just booking a normal shuttle ride it is possible to book a transfer that includes a stop for some type of adventure in the middle.

White water rafting transfers are great because you paddle down a river and the shuttle picks you up further down.

So, instead of sitting in a van for some of the way you get to paddle yourself instead. 🙂

Here are two great rafting transfers that we know of:

Our Costa Rica Rafting Tips

rafting costa rica

We suggest wearing:

  • Rubber-soled shoes that can be closed and you don’t mind getting wet (I suggest Keens )
  • A bathing suit
  • Clothes that can get wet and dry fast (I suggest a fast drying long sleeve shirt to block the sun)
  • Glasses strap

Oh and don’t forget to load up on SPF 50 sunscreen.

We suggest bringing:

  • A microfiber towel
  • SPF 50 sunscreen
  • A waterproof backpack ( we love this one )
  • A change of clothes.

Most white water rafting tour companies provide water, other drinks, fruit, and other snacks. Sometimes you may have lunch included in your trip as well.

Check out the Complete Costa Rica Packing List for all the Essentials You Need in Your Suitcase (and on that subject….we suggest a large backpack instead of suitcase)

Trust Your Instincts

We are all about supporting local companies, but please make sure that whichever company you book through is reputable and experienced.

All of the companies we suggested have a lot of experience and are well known.

However, if you feel hesitant about something or conditions don’t seem optimal, speak up. This goes for all activities in Costa Rica .

Listen to Your Instructor

On the same safety topic, always listen to your Costa Rica white water rafting guide.

They know these rivers extremely well and lead tours several days a week. If they tell you to do something it is for your safety and the safety of your fellow tripmates.

Travel Insurance

Class 2 to 4 river rapids amid a tropical dry forest environment

While it is true that Guanacaste is one of the driest provinces in Costa Rica , it has several rivers that offer phenomenal whitewater rapids in the middle of the dry tropical forest.

During the adventure tours , you can not only have fun on the river, but also appreciate the incredible majesty of the natural beauty of the province.

The tropical forests along the rivers are home to different species of wildlife, including howler monkeys, many birds, turtles, and colorful birds.

Tenorio River

The Tenorio River rafting adventure is a wonderful adventure and ecotourism experience. The river, which has rapids of difficulty 2 to 3, including a class 4 drop at the end (optional) is one of the most requested. Although it is a river with a certain degree of technical difficulty, it is totally possible for anyone to do the tour, even those with no experience.

Corobici River

The Corobici is one of the most emblematic of the region. It is known for its gentle rapids, class 1 to 1, which makes it a floating river, rather than a rafting river. Along the route, ideal for those looking for a little soft adventure, but above all a natural ecotourism experience, you will be able to see different species of animals along the forests that are located on the margins of the river.

Cucaracho River

For an exclusive adventure, we also offer the Cucaracho River, which is located in the North-Caribbean region, where Guanacaste joins the Upala region. It is considered one of the most beautiful rivers with high quality rapids in the country, very similar to the Pacuare River. This is because the nature in this region is tropical rainy, which makes the forests surrounding the river along the route are extremely lush.

A Safari River Float in La Fortuna/Arenal

A unique way to see some of Costa Rica’s best wildlife is on a river float tour. Many animals are attracted to water sources. Gently coasting down the river lets you sneak up on them in their natural habitat. In this post, we’ll tell you all about a fun safari river float trip we took in La Fortuna, near Arenal Volcano. It goes down a long section of the Penas Blancas River. We’ll also share how you can plan an excursion like this for yourself.

Scenery, River Float Tour Arenal

We did this tour while staying near downtown La Fortuna in Costa Rica’s Northern Highlands. This area is famous for the cone-shaped Arenal Volcano, but it also has many other activities like hiking, hanging bridges, adventure tours, and even cultural tours.

La Fortuna is about 2.5 hours from both of Costa Rica’s international airports, SJO near San Jose and LIR in Liberia.

For the river float tour, we headed east from La Fortuna. It was just a short drive to a river called the Penas Blancas.

This river flows north, merging with the Fortuna River, and its waters eventually flow into Nicaragua.

The safari float tour travels along 5.6 miles (9 km) of the Penas Blancas River and just a half mile (about one km) of the Fortuna River.

Setting Off

On the ride to the river put in, we passed large agricultural fields of pineapple, papaya, and yucca. Our guide, Fauricio, told us some cool facts about each crop.

After a little time to use the restroom and get our life jackets on, it was time to push off the rocks and head down the river.

Pushing off, river float tour La Fortuna

With a short safety talk from Fauricio, we felt at ease about our responsibilities. We would be on a large inflatable raft, with the guide leading the way. We would be asked to paddle occasionally, but mostly we could enjoy the ride along the calm, yet swift, river.

Our raft and paddles were the same type used in more extreme whitewater rafting tours. Although we wouldn’t be getting jolted around on this river, we still put some of our belongings in the company’s dry bags, just in case.

Tip: There are definitely some things you’ll want to bring on this tour to make yourself more comfortable. See our list at the end of this post.

The Beautiful Penas Blancas River

Setting off from the bank, the first thing you’ll notice during the safari float are the beautiful surrounds.

The Penas Blancas River has lofty trees that overhang many parts of it. The thick canopy filters the sunlight and creates almost a tunnel of jungle around you. There are birds calling in the trees, and smaller streams trickling into the larger river.

Tall trees and thick rainforest, river float tour

The size of the river varies, but overall is about 40-60 feet (12-18 meters) wide. Our guide, Fauricio, also told us that it can be anywhere from five to 25 feet (1.5-7.6 meters) deep, depending on water levels. With more rain, the river runs faster, but is still not very rough.

What You’ll See

As we floated down the water, Fauricio pointed out different things. Many were easy to spot like ducks, kingfishers, and iguanas. But he had a great eye for some harder to spot things as well.

At one point, he asked us to paddle backwards and slow the boat to a stop. Then he said, “Look right above you.”

We had to squint to understand what we were looking at. But sure enough, on the underside of a branch, was a family of small bats. They were very camouflaged, blending into the brown background almost perfectly. Fauricio explained that these were long-nosed bats and that they are important for the ecosystem because they eat a lot of mosquitoes!

In addition to wildlife, we learned about the surrounding environment. Fauricio told us about many of the tree species along the river, including the balsa and rubber. We also learned about some interesting plants like the tabacon and various types of banana.

Wildlife Highlights

While it was really interesting to learn about the plants, local weather patterns, and indigenous groups of Costa Rica, most people take the safari float trip for the wildlife viewing. And for this, it did not disappoint.

Sloth seen on river float tour

For us, some highlights were seeing several families of howler monkeys, a mother sloth and her baby really close up (picture above), and crocodiles on four different occasions.

One crocodile was at least eight feet (2.4 meters) long, while the rest were smaller. Our five-year old was very happy to see these and even happier that they were shy and scared of us.

Interesting birds we saw included the Anhinga, Amazon Kingfisher, Green Kingfisher, Whistling Ducks, Buff-rumped Warbler, and many Mangrove Swallows.

Agricultural Demonstrations

After a couple of hours on the Penas Blancas River, we drifted into the Fortuna River. At this point, the river was wider and had less of a canopy, but still very similar.

Shortly after, we came to the spot where we’d get off the boat.

Here, we climbed a set of steps to find a small farm and outdoor dining room. Once Faurico and the driver hauled up the raft, he joined us again to teach us about some traditional crops.

The first thing we learned about was how to juice raw sugar cane using an old-fashioned hand-crank press.

Our son had a great time turning the handle as we all watched the sugary water pour out. We then got to taste this, with a little sugar-cane-based liquor.

Fauricio taught us a traditional drinking chant, in Spanish, as a way to say cheers!

Next, we were shown some cacao plants growing in the yard. Fauricio took one of the strange looking pods off the small tree and briefly explained how chocolate is made from the seeds.

We then got to grind some of the dried cacao and mix it into a traditional drink. This drink was reserved for only the most important indigenous leaders at one time.

Traditional Snack

Finally, we got to sit down for a traditional snack of handmade tortillas, cheese, and roasted plantains. These tasted great after building up an appetite on the river. We also enjoyed some local coffee and fruit juice.

Traditional Foods river float tour La Fortuna

One of the highlights of the snack was the fact that all the chickens, ducks, and turkeys in the yard apparently love the plantain skins. Our son Sam had the time of his life flinging scraps to them on the other side of the fence.

Planning a Safari Float Tour in La Fortuna

Several tour operators in La Fortuna offer river float trips to see wildlife. You can usually either go in the morning or late afternoon as part of a twilight tour. Both times are great for wildlife viewing because that is when animals are most active.

If you’d like to book a safari float tour through the company we used and often send clients to, send us an email at bookings(at)twoweeksincostarica(dot)com with the number of adults, children (with ages), date and time you’d like to do the tour, as well as your pickup location. Booking through us costs the same and helps support our website!

Price ( 2024)

$64 per person adults, $38 per person children (ages 3-11). Rates plus 13% tax.

Round-trip transportation from La Fortuna-area hotels and vacation rental homes, bilingual naturalist guide, all equipment, water, and a stop for snacks, juice, and coffee.

Minimum Age

The minimum recommended age for children is three-years old.

What to Bring

It can be sunny along the river. We recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, sandals or sneakers, quick drying clothing, and an extra reusable water bottle. Binoculars also would be handy to see high up in the canopy.

You don’t need a bathing suit since you won’t be swimming.

Our biggest question was if it was okay to bring our large (expensive) SLR camera. It turns out it was completely fine; we just made sure to keep it strapped around our neck the whole time. We also used our cell phone to take pictures and videos.

Howler monkey on Penas Blancas River

The safari float tour along the Penas Blancas River near La Fortuna was one of the highlights of our most recent visit to the area. Not only did we get to see some amazing wildlife, but the boat ride along the river was fun and not stressful at all. If you are planning activities in La Fortuna, we would highly recommend it.

10 BEST Tours and Places to go Kayaking in Costa Rica

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

One of the best parts of visiting Costa Rica is the abundance of outdoor activities and sights to explore! All over the country, you will find uniquely beautiful places , and the adventures are truly endless. Having lived in Costa Rica, I can easily say that one of my favorite activities was kayaking!

Kayaking in Costa Rica is an activity that anyone can take part in – even if you’ve never paddled a day in your life. It lets you get into areas that you wouldn’t be able to otherwise. Just imagine exploring a mangrove forest, taking a night kayaking trip to see the magical bioluminescent algae, or having an adventure sport fishing!

While you could simply rent a kayak, I think there’s something nice about booking a tour in Costa Rica that has the entire experience planned out for you. All the equipment is included and reserved just for you. Plus you get the benefits of free cancellation and the book now, pay later policy with Viator which comes in handy.

To help you plan your next adventure, we’ve put together this list of the best places and tours for kayaking in Costa Rica!

Best Places and Tours to go Kayaking in Costa Rica

1. puerto jimenez, bio-luminescence and sunset kayak tour.

A dolphin swims near our kayak on a Puerto Jimenez, Bio-Luminescence and Sunset Kayak Tour

Puerto Jimenez is one of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets. Its proximity to Corcovado National Park and Golfo Dulce (a great place for whale watching !) and other national parks and wildlife refuges make this a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

This is why  the Bioluminescence and Sunset Kayak tour   needs to be added to your Costa Rica “must-see” list if you’re staying in Puerto Jimenez . This tour departs in the late afternoon so you have time to get out on the water and watch the sunset. In my opinion, few things are more beautiful in this world than a Costa Rican sunset.

But once it gets dark, the real magic begins!

The water turns a beautiful neon blue and green with the bioluminescent microorganisms that live underwater. It is seriously an awe-inspiring experience, with each stroke of your kayak paddle, the water below glows! You’ll even have a chance to snorkel through the water and see the lights up close.

This tour is also a great chance to spot wildlife in Costa Rica . When we took this tour we saw dolphins swimming right next to our kayaks as we paddled! This was one of the best experiences in Costa Rica since the dolphins really put on a show for us!

We love that this is a small tour of up to 15 people, so it didn’t feel too crowded. Included in this tour are local seasonal fruit as a snack, your knowledgeable guide, and all of the equipment for kayaking and snorkeling. You can  book this excursion online  for $62 USD.

2. San Jose, Sarapiqui River Tour

Sarapiqui Outdoor Center Jungle kayaking tour

San Jose is the largest city in the country and is quite different from the pristine beaches and lush jungles people often associate with Costa Rica, but still very beautiful! While it certainly has the feel of a bustling city, it’s a great launch point for day trips from San Jose , including going kayaking.

The Sarapiqui River is less than two hours from San Jose and this is the spot you’ll leave for an epic Sarapiqui River tour . If you’ve ever wanted to combine whitewater rafting and kayaking (I didn’t know I wanted to until I took this tour!), then this is the chance to do it!

You will meet at the Sarapiqui Outdoor Center near the launch point. You’ll get a 1-hour introduction to white water kayaking where you will learn the basics before you hit the water! Once you are comfortable, your experienced guide will lead your group down the beautiful Sarapiqui River. You’ll go through Class I and II rapids, which our guide called “mild rapids” so it was a good challenge for beginners but still a super fun time.

While on the river keep an eye out for tropical birds and other wildlife, perhaps you might even see a sloth , although I wasn’t quite that lucky!

This is an awesome tour because once you learn the foundations of whitewater kayaking, you can take this skill no matter where you go. This tour is $75 USD per person and   includes all the equipment, snacks and drinks, and your wonderful guide. If you’re up for an adventurous kayak tour and you’re spending a couple days around San Jose , then make sure to book a spot on this tour online !

Related Read: San Jose is also a good base to join a coffee tour of Costa Rica . This country is known for amazing coffee after all!

3. Paquera, Bioluminescent Kayak Tour

Our two kayaks on a Paquera Kayaking tour in Costa Rica

The next one of the top spots to kayak in Costa Rica involves a bit of travel to get here, but its “hidden gem” status is well deserved! Paquera has some of the most beautiful beaches on the  Nicoya Peninsula  and the water is crystal-clear, so kayaking at night is extra special.

You’ll need to hop on the daily ferry  from  the port town of Puntarenas or you can rent a car and drive here if you’re traveling around the Guanacaste region . Another option is catching one of the daily buses from San José to Paquera.

One thing that makes Paquera so unique, is its “bio-bay” where you can see bioluminescent algae on this night kayaking tour ! These microscopic organisms give off a glow, making the water light up at night. It is truly remarkable.

The tour starts at sunset, overlooking the bio-bay. You’ll meet your guide and a small group of up to 10 for a safety briefing, refreshments, and getting set with all of your kayaking equipment.

When it begins to get dark, you’ll slip your kayak into the calm water and have a full hour to explore the area. Here, you’ll see the algae below light up as your paddle dips into the water. It is one of the prettiest things I’ve experienced!

Because Paquera is so remote, there is hardly any light pollution. This makes for one of the most starry skies I’ve ever seen. It was surreal to see the water lighting up below, and the millions of stars above!

This experience includes all the kayak gear, snacks, and your guide for only $36 USD!  This tour is popular for a reason and tends to sell out, so make sure to book your spot here .

4. Manuel Antonio, Damas Island Estuary Tour

Manuel Antonio, Damas Island Estuary kayaking Tour

One of the most important ecosystems sits right outside of Manuel Antonio National Park . The Damas Island Estuary is home to a mangrove forest that is used for the conservation of endangered animals. This ecosystem is essential to wildlife including monkeys, sloths, birds, boa constrictors, and more.

I have done many mangrove tours in Costa Rica, and I never get tired of exploring this unique environment! I especially love kayaking tours from Manuel Antonio because you can get a close look at the mangrove’s deep root system.

Here is your chance to explore this vast estuary too!  This half-day tour   takes you winding through the mangrove forest on a kayak. It gives you the opportunity to get into the area in a unique way and enjoy the natural beauty!

This tour departs from Quepos , or you can request pickup if you’re staying in Manuel Antonio . You’ll make your way to the estuary, all equipment and instruction are provided, and the guides lead the way.

The next few hours are relaxing as you paddle through the trees, taking in the scenery, and hopefully seeing lots of wildlife! The expert guides are a great source of information so you really understand the biodiversity of the area you are exploring.

Your day will end with a traditional Costa Rican lunch back in Quepos. Transportation, equipment, lunch, and your naturalist guide are included for $70 USD and you can easily book this tour online with Viator .

Related Read: Kayaking is hungry work, so make sure to pop into one of the restaurants in Manuel Antonio after your tour!

5. Manuel Antonio, Ocean Kayaking Tour

Ocean kayaking in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

This area is one of my favorites because the long coastline provides gorgeous beaches and lots of water adventure activities, like surfing, parasailing, and sea kayaking. The big draw is Manuel Antonio National Park , which is quite stunning in itself, but there’s also plenty to do in Manuel Antonio town !

If sea kayaking has been something you’ve always wanted to do, I suggest booking  this half-day ocean kayaking tour . It’s great for any skill level and lets you paddle on the open ocean!

You have the choice of single or double kayaks, so you can kayak as a couple if you’re on a romantic getaway in Costa Rica !

It’s a thrilling experience to paddle along the coastline and see all the marine life. Our guide was a great source of information as he told us all about the animals and sea life. Eventually, you’ll make your way to a beach for a fresh pineapple snack and take a break from all that kayaking!

The tour will start and finish in the town of Quepos, or you can request a pickup from your local accommodation. It also includes a yummy lunch and if you need a vegetarian option, just let them know. It’s a pretty sweet deal including transportation, lunch, snacks, a guide, and all your equipment for $78 USD.

If gliding on the ocean in a kayak sounds like a perfect day, make sure to book this tour with Viator here !

6. Tortuguero, Tortuguero National Park

A group of people Kayaking in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Tortuguero is a small town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. This town and national park are named after the turtles that use this area as their nesting ground! While it is very cool to visit during nesting season, there is plenty more to explore at any time of year.

Getting to Tortuguero takes a little planning. There are no roads that reach the town, it’s connected by canals and rivers that lie in the dense jungle and eventually lead to the beach. To get here, you have to either take a small plane from San Jose or a boat from the nearby city of Puerto Limon .

Because there are so many rivers that surround Tortuguero National Park, what better way to experience it than by kayak?

This three-hour kayak tour  begins early in the morning at 6 am, as that is the best time to see animals! You will meet your guide in the town of Tortuguero and head to the national park. Here, they lead you on a leisurely paddle through the rivers and canals, taking in the dense jungle. This remote jungle is really unlike anything I’ve seen before!

This tour is great because you truly can see so much wildlife like sloths, howler monkeys, birds, and alligators – be sure to keep those fingers out of the water!

This tour includes transportation, equipment, and guides for $45 USD. This is a great way to start your day and a truly unique way to experience this beautiful part of Costa Rica! You can book a spot on this small-group tour online .

7. Samara, Ora River Tour

Kayaking through mangroves

Samara is the perfect location to spend a week in Costa Rica . This quaint town is known for its tranquil beaches and the surrounding forest and wildlife. The downtown is filled with restaurants and cute shops that lead right down to Samara Beach. The water here is much calmer than in the neighboring towns of Santa Teresa and Nosara , so it makes for a perfect place to swim, kayak, and have a chill beach day.

Because of its proximity to so many activities, staying in Samara is a great choice. You can use Samara as a launch point for various tour excursions , such as  this kayaking trip . You’ll spend the day exploring the Ora River. This river is lined with mangrove trees, which are home to many animals like herons, monkeys, iguanas, and if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of a sloth!

This tour is great for those who have never kayaked before, or if you’re after a relaxing day on the water. While some of the kayaking tours in Costa Rica on our list are more adventure based, this one is certainly a chill day paddling through the mangroves.

You will eventually make your way to a beach where turtles lay their eggs! Here, you’ll have a snack, take a break, and enjoy the views.

What I really love about this tour is that it offers hotel pickup from Samara or Carrillo, so it makes your day super easy! For $66 USD, you can book this tour online for a relaxing day that includes kayak equipment, snacks, transportation, and guides.

8. La Fortuna, Peñas Blancas River

Peñas Blancas River Kayaking Costa Rica

La Fortuna is the place to be for adventures! Located right at the base of one of the must-see volcanoes in Costa Rica , the Arenal Volcano, there is no shortage of activities to be done here! Ziplines , hot springs , hiking, and more, you would need to spend at least a few days here to even scratch the surface.

I actually loved this area so much that I lived in La Fortuna for a while! The surrounding wildlife, outdoor recreation, and fun downtown are a draw for many, and I would recommend it to any traveler.

One of my favorite tours I did in La Fortuna was taking this Kayak Safari tour . The focus of this tour is kayaking, of course, but also seeing wildlife. This area is perfect for spotting howler monkeys, sloths, iguanas, birds, and more!

The tour takes off from Flow Trips headquarters right in La Fortuna. You will be kayaking down the Peñas Blancas River, which is right out of town. This tour is suitable for all skill levels and doesn’t require any previous kayaking experience. You can also choose a single or double kayak for the exact same price.

The guides are truly impressive, they have quite the eye and I am always in awe of the animals they can spot hiding in the trees! They are also knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the area.

At the end of the tour, you’ll get to try some traditional Costa Rican food ! The tour is $55 USD which includes equipment, transportation to the river, snacks, and your expert guide. The group is limited to only six people, so make sure to book a spot before it fills up !

9. La Fortuna, Lake Arenal Tour

Canoa Aventura kayaking on Lake Arenal

Just outside La Fortuna is Costa Rica’s largest lake, Lake Arenal! It’s right below the Arenal Volcano, so the views of the volcano are pretty impressive. The lake also provides hydroelectric power for the country, so you’ll see large wind turbines on the rolling hills above.

Without a doubt, I think the best way to experience Lake Arenal is to get out on the water!   This kayak tour  gives you an entire afternoon to explore the lake, although it’s so big you certainly won’t see the whole thing! But, it makes for a fun adventure and is good for both experienced kayakers and first-timers.

You’ll start the tour by being picked up from your hotel and brought to the lake. After some instruction, you will get on the water and begin exploring. The area surrounding the lake is a dense jungle that makes for a gorgeous lush green backdrop.

One of the main highlights of this tour is all the animals you can see. There is no shortage of beautiful birds in this area and it’s pretty likely you’ll hear howler monkeys like we did – these guys are loud!

After about two hours of paddling, you will visit an island on the lake to explore the beach and have a fresh fruit snack.

I love this area since the lake is calm and relaxing, and just overall stunning! Hotel pickup, transportation, kayak equipment, and the guide are included in the price of $68 USD. For a day on the lake, reserve your kayaking adventure on Lake Arenal online here !

10. La Fortuna, Kayak Fishing on Lake Arenal

Kayaking fishing tour on Lake Arenal, Costa Rica

Another outdoor activity that is widely popular in Costa Rica is fishing. So why not combine the two on this kayak fishing excursion !

Lake Arenal is a great spot to reel in a catch. Some of the most common fish in the lake include mojaras, tilapia, tiger bass, crawfish, catfish, and rainbow bass, known locally as “Guapote”, which translates to “the handsome one” thanks to its bright colors.

We love this kayak fishing tour because not only do you get to have a fun morning casting a line, but you also get incredible views of Arenal Volcano! Your tour begins quite early with a 5 am hotel pickup (the early bird gets the fish right?!).

You can take the tour as a couple or with up to four people for $142 USD each. I think it’s a huge bonus that this is such a small tour. The guides do this nearly every day, so can give tips and know the best spots where the fish will be biting!

Specialized fishing kayaks and all fishing gear are included in the tour. It’s scheduled to last for four hours, although it can go longer if the fishing is good. Hotel pickup and transportation, as well as all the fishing gear, snacks, and your expert fishing guide (who is full of great tips!) are all included.  This awesome experience can be booked online !

The BEST Things to do in Costa Rica

Bailey at Poas Volcano in Costa Rica

While there are so many fun things to do in Costa Rica , a couple of specific attractions and activities stand out amongst the rest. They are:

Explore Volcanoes

There are some impressive (and beautiful!) volcanoes that you’ll want to check out while you’re here.

Poas Volcano is known for its bright blue crater lake. Poas Volcano is most commonly visited on a day trip from San Jose. This Poas Volcano tour from San Jose is one of the best you can do since it also includes a visit to the La Paz Waterfall Gardens as well as a coffee farm.

Arenal Volcano is also one of Costa Rica’s top attractions. Arenal Volcano is located closest to the town of La Fortuna. You can book this full-day tour from La Fortuna that takes you to the volcano to hike, the famous La Fortuna Waterfall and even a hanging bridge – it’s a full day of adventure!

Chase Waterfalls

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of our favorite waterfalls in all of Costa Rica. You can easily visit it on this full-day tour in La Fortuna that also visits hot springs.

Rio Celeste is another beautiful waterfall that is famous for its bright blue water. Rio Celeste is a popular attraction to visit from Guanacaste Province and this particular tour includes transport from there. Alternatively, you can book this tour from La Fortuna or this tour from San Jose .

See the wildlife

Costa Rica is the place for wildlife lovers! One of the best places to see lots of animals in their wild habitat is at Manuel Antonio National Park . With the help of a guide you will see plenty of birds, monkeys, and even sloths! This particular tour is super popular and also has amazing reviews, so you really can;t go wrong.

There are also lots of wildlife rescue centers around the country that are worth visiting. The Jaguar Rescue Center in Puerto Viejo is one of our favorites as well as Rescate Wildlife Rescue Center in San Jose where you can book this private tour.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

There’s just something about seeing Costa Rica from a kayak that I love! It satisfies my adventurous spirit and gives me a bit of peace and quiet to take in the beautiful scenery. If you’re considering going kayaking in Costa Rica, hopefully, this guide has helped you find out where to go and some of the best tours available.

If you need more ideas or travel inspiration for your trip, make sure to have a look at our other blogs about Costa Rica . We fell in love with this country and are always discovering new things that keep us coming back!

Tarcoles River & Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica [GUIDE]

Home | Travel | Central America | Costa Rica | Tarcoles River & Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica [GUIDE]

Although we saw numerous signs warning us about the presence of crocodiles in Costa Rica , we had never had the opportunity to see these animals in the wild. That’s why, on the way to Manuel Antonio National Park , it seemed like a good idea to stop at the Crocodile Bridge over the Tárcoles River .

In case you didn’t know, you can observe one of the most fascinating species of animals in Costa Rica in the wild and… very close! The Tárcoles River has more crocs than Tortuguero and Carara, two other national parks in Costa Rica that are famous for their crocodiles.

At the Tarcoles Bridge in Costa Rica , you can see a dozen specimens of American crocodiles from above, either resting on the shore or popping their eyes above the water’s surface.

Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica

Tarcoles River & Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica

It seemed like one of the best things to do in Costa Rica , but it left us with mixed feelings. Seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica was spectacular, but one is left wondering if these animals stay there naturally, or if they receive food to be attracted, and thus also attract tourists. Nearby, you can see some craft stalls and local restaurants, and boat rides on the river are offered so you can see them up close (yes, even closer). We considered this boat tour , which starts from around the bridge and allows you to go into the jungle as you sail, but we decided against it and just observed them from the bridge.

We hear there are plans to build a visitor center and viewing platform, so we hope this will improve the situation for these crocodiles in Costa Rica . The truth is that the Tárcoles River Bridge has become super popular since it is free and safe. There is even a tour from San José that takes you here in case you decide not to rent a car in Costa Rica .

Below, you will find all the information you need to plan your visit to the Tarcoles River Bridge, such as its location, what to expect, and what to do in the surrounding area.

Where is the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge in Costa Rica?

The Tárcoles River Bridge is located on National Highway 34 . This route connects San José , one of the most important cities in Costa Rica and the country’s capital, with the Pacific coast, where you will find some of the main tourist sites such as Quepos or Manuel Antonio .

To give you an idea, if you’re enjoying the waves on the beaches of Jacó , you can get here in just 30 minutes by car. On the other hand, if you’re staying in one of the hotels in San José , it will take you about an hour and a half.

How to find the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River, Costa Rica

Where is the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River, Costa Rica

The road crosses the Tárcoles River Bridge , so there is no parking in the area. Of course, most visitors leave their cars on the side of the road, on a large dirt esplanade near the craft stalls. While there are various places along the road that charge for parking, you can drive up to the esplanade and park for free.

To find the exact location of the Tárcoles River Bridge, you can click here .

Views from the Tárcoles River crocodile bridge

Once you park your car, head to the right side of the bridge, which faces west toward the Pacific coast and Manuel Antonio. You’ll see a sign warning visitors not to swim in the waters. We laughed out loud when we saw this, but then we heard some stories about distracted bathers, so we understood why the sign was there.

What to see from the crocodile bridge of the Tárcoles River

Views from the crocodile bridge of the Tárcoles River

The pollution of the Tárcoles River can be seen with the naked eye. The crocodiles camouflage themselves and disappear in the water, which is brown from the mud and waste that comes from the city of San José and the industries in the area. This stood out to us since generally, Costa Rica is a country that prioritizes the conservation of various species. The curious thing is that despite being the most polluted river in Central America, the Tárcoles River in Costa Rica houses such biodiversity.

Seeing the Tárcoles River crocodiles is impressive

The experience of seeing the Tárcoles River crocodiles is impressive. You can see them almost everywhere, both on the sandbanks and in the water. I was amazed watching their slow and precise movements, and seeing many others in an immobile position until a tourist threw some food, and they suddenly jumped up to snatch it. Of course, throwing food is completely prohibited , but some visitors didn’t seem to care.

Information about Costa Rica crocodiles

The Tárcoles River crocodiles are American crocodiles , the largest in the world. They measure between 3-4 meters (9.8-13.1 ft) and can weigh up to 500 kilos (1,000 lbs)! This species can reach a spectacular size on its own, but the crocodiles here can get to about 7 meters (22 ft), thanks to the excess food they receive each day with little effort.

Tárcoles River crocodiles are American crocodiles,

Watching these Tarcoles River crocodiles , I was fascinated by their textured skin and sharp teeth, which show even when their mouths are closed.

Other places to see crocodiles in Costa Rica

If you want to see crocodiles in Costa Rica but prefer a place with greater ecological awareness, you can go to Tortuguero National Park . In addition to witnessing turtles nesting on its beaches, you can sign up for a canoe tour through the channels of this protected area.

This 2-hour excursion will allow you to observe different species of animals in Costa Rica , such as the famous howler monkeys, anteaters, blue herons (among other birds), fish, and, of course, some alligators and crocodiles drying in the sun by the river.

Other places to see crocodiles in Costa Rica apart from Tárcoles River

Sightings are quite frequent since they live in the mouths of rivers and canals in the sea. They usually find a large amount of food here, so they concentrate on the shores in search of their prey.

If you want to know more about this national park, you can consult our guide to Tortuguero National Park .

Other places to visit near the Tárcoles River

Visiting the Tarcoles River Bridge in Costa Rica won’t take too long since you just need to park your car and enjoy the views. Therefore, if you have a flexible itinerary and more time, I recommend some other places to visit near the Tárcoles River :

Carara National Park

Just 10 minutes from the Crocodile Bridge of the Tárcoles River  is the spectacular Carara National Park . It’s famous for being home to one of the largest populations of scarlet macaws in the world and for serving as a sanctuary for this endangered species.

Keep in mind that, if you sign up for this tour from San José, you will visit both the Crocodile Bridge and the park on the same day, so it’s super convenient. We ended up visiting the Tárcoles River on our own, but we hired our guide, Ronald , to walk us through the park. We were super happy with the experience!

Carara National Park is close to the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

The truth is that, despite being one of the best areas to spot birds, the vegetation is quite dense , so if you don’t have a trained eye, you may not be able to spot the camouflaged animals among the trees. We were able to observe a scarlet macaw , but I assume that it would not have been possible without Ronald’s help. Therefore, to get the most out of your visit, I recommend hiring a naturalist guide.

Among the different routes in the park, there is also the Laguna Meándrica Trail that takes you to a section of the river where crocodiles are common, although we had better luck with the Tárcoles River Bridge.

Bijagual Waterfall

There are many beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica where you can explore incredible natural landscapes, so I suggest adding a few of them to your itinerary. The Bijagual Waterfall is just 20 minutes by car from the Tárcoles River Bridge and is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle where you can fully immerse yourself in nature. It is 328 meters (1,076 ft) high, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the entire country.

Of course, to get there, you will have to leave your car in the parking lot at the entrance, and walk for approximately 50 minutes . It’s worth it, as you can take some fantastic photos from the panoramic lookout point and appreciate all its beauty.

Bijagual Waterfall, another spot to check in the surroundings of the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

If you want to go for a swim, you will have to walk about 300 meters (1,000 ft) more to reach the river. It’s a nice place to stay for a few hours and disconnect, so I recommend you bring everything you need with you. Freshwater pools are great for cooling down on the most humid days, so thank me later!

Now, if you’re staying in the town of Jacó, you can consider this tour , which visits the waterfall and natural pools and includes a horseback ride along the mountain trails.

Jacó Beach is one of the most popular beach destinations where you’ll find large stretches of sand, perfect waves, and lively nightlife. Thanks to its proximity to San José (you can get there in less than two hours by car), it is also frequented by locals, who decide to escape for the weekend to the beautiful Pacific beaches.

There are many things to do in Jacó , but most visitors come here for the relaxed atmosphere, fascinating sunsets, and wide variety of bars and clubs. In addition, it is one of the surfing towns par excellence where you can sign up for these classes and practice your skills. However, the sea currents can be quite strong here, so this isn’t the place to vacation with small children.

Jaco Beach is half an hour away from the crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

Among other popular excursions in Costa Rica , you can go horseback riding by the sea or explore the jungle on a quad bike . Jaco Beach is also a strategic point to visit other beaches such as Hermosa and Herradura.

Finally, if you want to travel cheaply , keep in mind that the Jacó area is home to some of the best hotels in Costa Rica , so you can plan a great vacation even on a tight budget.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park is another of the most important national parks in Costa Rica , which is why many travelers visit the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge on the way to this protected space. It is one of the most famous sites in the country, so you have probably already taken a look at it when organizing your itinerary.

You can enjoy all kinds of activities here, such as visiting the paradisiacal beaches, taking nature walks, and signing up for some animal-watching excursions.

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the best national parks close to crocodile bridge in Costa Rica

Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur are the two main beaches, so if you’re looking to spend some quiet time lying in the sun, I highly recommend them. However, in my opinion, it’s worth taking advantage of your visit to see the different species that live in this territory. This guided tour through the jungle allows you to observe monkeys, sloths, and birds in total freedom.

Furthermore, when night falls, the animals completely change their behavior, and you can see other species that don’t come out in the light of day. So, consider taking this night tour to explore another facet of this national park.

On the other hand, Manuel Antonio is home to incredible marine fauna that is worth discovering, such as the humpback whales that we were able to spot during our catamaran ride . We also snorkeled among spectacular schools of colorful fish and other sea creatures.

And that’s all about the Tárcoles River Crocodile Bridge and the surrounding area. I hope this guide helps you plan your visit and you enjoy seeing the crocodiles in Costa Rica as much as we did.

If you have any questions or want to share your experience, feel free to leave me a comment below. I will be delighted to hear from you!

Home » Things to do » Best Costa Rica Jungle & Mangrove Tours

The jungles, swamps, and mangroves of Costa Rica are awe-inspiring – no matter how many times you’ve seen them. Constant sunlight, abundant rains, and the high temperatures are a recipe for biological diversity. These complex biological ecosystems contain dense foliage, massive trees, and more than half of all the living things known to man. A trip down the mangrove canals will reveal a surprising number of wading birds (they can gather in flocks up to the thousands), curious iguanas and monkeys keeping watch from tree limbs, and the occasional tapir pushing through the undergrowth.

Costa Rica Jungle Day Tours:

Despite the thick undergrowth of a jungle, hiking tours are a great way to get up close and personal with nature. Naturalist guides are strongly recommended in order to spot the elusive wildlife and learn about the complicated relationships between the flora and fauna of the Costa Rica jungle. A jungle kayak or cruising adventure is another way to discover the untouched beauty of Costa Rica. Kayaking is a fantastic way to reach some of the most remote and wild mangrove environments. Without a motor, travelers might get to spot some of the more elusive tropical creatures.

Corcovado National Park Tour, Osa Peninsula

Best Jungle and Mangrove Tours in Costa Rica

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park is the largest lowland rainforest in Central America and the most remote rainforest in Costa Rica. The park covers nearly half of the entire Osa Peninsula and is home to exotic species such as scarlet macaws, all 4 Costa Rican monkey species, and the endangered jaguar. Nearly every jungle lodge in and around Drake Bay and Puerto Jimenez can book a guided day tour to Corcovado. Hike along the shoreline or right into the jungle to explore the most remote tropical forest in the country.

Tarcoles River Cruise, Central Pacific Coast

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

One of our most popular adventures brings you to the Tarcoles River within Carara National Park on the Central Pacific Coast , home to some of the largest populations of crocodiles in the world! Male crocodiles can weight up to a ton and reach 20 feet in length! While cruising along the Tarcoles River, you will see them swimming or sunbathing on the river banks. Available as an en route tour from Arenal Volcano to Manuel Antonio, this tour is a great opportunity to get (not too) close to these immense creatures while continuing on your exploration of Costa Rica. Another option is to simply stop off at the famous Crocodile Bridge over the Tarcoles River to see the wild crocodiles for a quick stop off!

Damas Island Estuary Kayak or Boat Tour, Manuel Antonio

Top Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Damas Island Estuary is located outside  Manuel Antonio National Park  and the town of Quepos. From crocodiles and sloths to monkeys and iguanas, these mangrove waterways are teeming with wildlife like crocodiles, herons, sloths, monkeys, and more! A professional naturalist guide will lead you through the estuary by boat or kayak. Following your tour, enjoy a traditionally prepared Costa Rican meal. Tours are available during the day and in the evenings.

Tamarindo Estuary Kayaking Tour, Guanacaste

Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours & Mangrove Excursions

Between Playa Tamarindo and Playa Grande, the Playa Grande Estuary empties into the bay of Tamarindo. A professional naturalist will guide you through the unique estuary ecosystem, pointing out the highlights and wildlife in the area. This tour can be done in single or double kayaks. An hour into your adventure, grab a snack on the riverbank.

Costa Rica Jungle Overnights:

One of the best ways to explore all of the beauty of Costa Rica is a few nights stay at one of the country’s jungle lodges. Several of the eco-lodges in our collection are accessible only via boat or flight. This makes reaching your destination an adventure in itself. See the country from an aerial angle on a domestic flight and/or take a boat to your destination looking for wildlife!

Osa Peninsula

5 Best Costa Rica Jungle Tours

Peruse the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve on the remote Osa Peninsula by boat or kayak through dense jungle estuaries.

Many jungle lodges are located on or near the remote Osa Peninsula – the southwesternmost point of Costa Rica which also happens to contain one of the largest remaining tracts of tropical rainforest in Central America. This important region is home to literally hundreds of species, many endangered and is the perfect place for explorations into untouched jungles and rainforest. The Diquis Delta near Drake Bay, the Sierpe River Mouth  of the Sierpe-Terraba Mangrove Reserve, and the G0lfo Dulce  are mangrove highlights of the region. Boat transportation down-estuary waterways to the lodges of Drake Bay on the Osa Peninsula introduce guests to the huge variety of ecosystems that can be found, and it’s an extra chance for wildlife watching. Bird-lovers, in particular, should check out the Osa Peninsula. It’s one of the most popular destinations in Costa Rica for bird-watching and is one of the richest and most diverse tropical zones in the world.

A professional naturalist guide will point out the exotic flora and fauna of the area from the comfort of a boat with a quiet motor. Howler monkeys, anteaters, sloths, jaguars, and over 350 bird species call this region of Costa Rica home. These maze-like waterways are the perfect paths for kayak and boat adventures.

The 8 Best Beaches To Visit in Costa Rica

C osta Rica is a Central American country with stunning coastlines. Nearly a quarter of the land is protected jungle, so travelers commonly note that the natural beauty of the country is unmatched. The biodiversity of Costa Rica is a big appeal for tourism . The capital of Costa Rica is San Jose, which attracts plenty of travelers looking for a bustling city center. It is a quite welcoming country , so travelers flock to the area. But the destination is most known for its national parks and beaches. And there are plenty of beaches for tourists to choose from. Many travelers travel to the beaches of Costa Rica to elope or even to take a family trip. To simplify the planning process, we have assembled a list of the best beaches in Costa Rica.

When To Visit Costa Rica

The most ideal time to visit Costa Rica mainly has to do with the weather, crowds and travel costs. For the most ideal weather, travelers should consider a trip in between the months of December and April. This period of time is the most sunny and least rainy, which makes for a great beach experience. Temperatures generally range from 70 to 90 degrees during these months, so travelers are pretty much guaranteed  great sunbathing.

Costa Rica is not a very expensive place to travel to, but some travelers may want to decrease their spendings as much as possible. The low season is the most ideal time to save on flights and accommodations. This season, where traveling in Costa Rica is most affordable, is between May and September.

For the most serene experience, travelers should not visit Costa Rica during the dry season. This season is the most popular time to visit, between December and April. The rest of the year is the best time to plan a trip to Costa Rica.

The Best Beaches in Costa Rica

Playa santa teresa .

This beach is located in the beach town of Santa Teresa, which is known for its laid back atmosphere. There are plenty of restaurants, accommodations and things to do in the area. The beach is popular with surfers, foodies and wellness enthusiasts. In fact, there are plenty of popular places to eat near the beach. Playa Santa Teresa is a great place for vacationers that are looking for a getaway with warm waters, colorful forest, soft sand and an array of beach activities. Some of the top things to do around the beach include surfing, yoga, deep sea fishing, day spas, shopping at local boutiques and eco tours.

Playa Conchal

Playa Conchal is a great place to swim and is considered one of the finest beaches on the Pacific Northwest coast. Sunrise is priceless there, so many travelers take leisurely strolls on the beach. Conchal translates to shell so this beach is commonly called shell beach. The iconic white shells that are along the coastline can be seen all year long. Travelers visiting Playa Conchal enjoy swimming, sun tanning, fishing, tubing, zip lining, hiking, sunset cruises and horseback riding. The town Tamarindo is 10 miles away, so travelers have access to accommodations and other vacation amenities.

Manzanillo

Manzanillo is a village in Costa Rica that is very tranquil. It has a beautiful beach which goes by the same name. The Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is nearby and it includes almost six miles of beach. The Manzanillo Beach has shiny pristine sand, turquoise waters and a deep history with fishing. Due to this, it is still to this day a great place for fly fishing. Travelers also enjoy scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, hiking and biking at this beach. While it is most popular with locals, plenty of tourists visit to enjoy the coconut palms and sunshine. It is not very central so there are not a lot of accommodation options close to the beach, but the coastline is accessible.

Manuel Antonio

The Playa Manuel Antonio is a short walk from the national park of the same name. This beach is a very popular tourist attraction since it has clear waters and nearby amenities. Although there are many beaches in the city of Manuel Antonio, Playa Manuel Antonio is the top option for travelers. There are multiple trails there where travelers can explore the natural environment. There are changing rooms and restrooms available leading up to the beach which make it easier for tourists to visit. While travelers are at Playa Manuel Antonio, they should take advantage of the snorkeling opportunities. If travelers want to visit the Manuel Antonio National Park they are welcome to take a tour. There is an entrance fee for the national park on top of the cost of a tour, so travelers should note that.

Playa Montezuma

The town of Montezuma is home to some nice beaches that will impress travelers. The main beach is Playa Montezuma, which is a nice central spot for tourists to stop at. The beach is small and is a bit rocky, so this location is not the best option for swimming travelers. To avoid taking a chance on the riptides many tourists book horseback riding tours. This excursion offers a leisurely exploration of the stunning beach. The majority of travelers enjoy simply sunbathing or going on beach strolls. Playas Las Manchas and Playa Grande are among the other popular options nearby. These beaches are rocky, picturesque and have an ambiance of seclusion.

Playa Tortuguero

Tortuguero is a remote destination with an abundance of wildlife and natural beauty. It is commonly referred to as the Amazon of Costa Rica, so travelers will have access to exciting rainforest experiences. The beach is quite photogenic since it has crisp white sands and lush greenery. It, as its name suggests, is among some of the top nesting sites for turtles. Some tourists come just to witness the sea turtles. There are even guided night tours that provide tourists with a (safely distanced) look into sea turtle nesting. The season for these immersive tours runs from July until around August. Alternatively, travelers that visit this beach can sit back and relax to enjoy the cooling crystalline waters.

Playa Tamarindo

Although Tamarindo is a relatively small beach town, it is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. It has lively nightlife and a good surfing scene, so travelers visiting its beach will have plenty to do. Tamarindo is also a prime location for aquatic activities in Costa Rica since it has warm waters as well as many activities to partake in. Among the most popular things to do are diving, sportfishing, horseback riding, surfing, hiking and sunbathing. This beach is a popular nesting site for Leatherback Turtles and travelers can even see Howler Monkeys swinging from tree to tree from the water.

Playa San Juanillo

The small coastal village of San Juanillo is not a huge tourism hub, but it is a nice place to stay. In this area travelers will be able to connect with the local culture and appreciate the rustic yet idyllic sights. This small beach in the Guanacaste area is a great place to visit if travelers prefer a little privacy. To get there travelers will have to venture off road, so it is safe to say that this beach will not commonly be super crowded. The seemingly untouched beauty of this Costa Rica beach provides a major appeal for visitors. The beach is revered for its stunning turquoise waters and pristine white sand. Due to its clear waters and thriving marine life, San Juanillo Beach is the perfect place for snorkeling. Other popular activities that travelers can enjoy at this beach are relaxing. Most visitors enjoy lounging on the beach in a hammock, reading in the serene environment, hiking up the beach rocks, having a picnic or simply swimming in the warm waters.
