Stage 19: Second-last mountain stage will play major part in GC battle

Tour de France organizers may be avoiding Paris for the first time ever, due to the Olympic Games being held there, but the final three days of the race will be suspenseful right up to the finish in Nice. Stage 19 will see the climbers go all out for success, with 4,500 meters of climbing in store.

The difficulty is further heightened by the fact that all three of the day’s climbs are over 2,000 meters, the level at which altitude really starts to have an effect.

The first half hour of racing is on rolling roads but from there the peloton will begin the climb of the Col du Vars. At 18.9km in length, it averages 5.7 percent but does top 10 percent early on. It summits at 2,105 meters and then the riders will plunge downhill for 22km before starting the Cime de la Bonette. This 23km brute is 6.9 percent average and ascends to 2,797 meters, the highest of this year’s Tour.

A 40km descent takes the riders to the day’s final climb, that of Isola 2000. It is another testing one, averaging 7 percent over 16.4km up to the finish.

The view of Tour de France race director Christian Prudhomme: “The menu for this ultra-mountain stage could well make you dizzy, but it’ll also whet the appetite of the very best climbers. Although the stage is less than 150km long, the riders will climb above 2,000 meters on three occasions.

“The biggest test the climb to the summit of La Bonette, the highest road in France at an altitude of 2,802 meters. Its 360-degree panorama is breath-taking.”

Ex-winnaar Egan Bernal kondigt zelf zijn deelname aan de Tour de France aan

Het gros van de publiekstrekkers van de Tour de France ligt momenteel in de lappenmand, maar de Ronde van Frankrijk krijgt er nog een aantrekkelijke kopman bij. Egan Bernal heeft zijn deelname bevestigd.

Egan Bernal  won in 2019 de Tour de France, maar daarna namen Tadej Pogacar en Jonas Vingegaard de fakkel razendsnel over. 

De Colombiaan kwam bovendien begin januari 2022 bijzonder zwaar ten val op training en lag lange tijd in de lappenmand.

Vorig jaar nam Bernal wel deel aan de Tour en de Vuelta, maar met een 36e en een 55e plaats fonkelde zijn ster helemaal niet meer.

Dit jaar lijkt de 27-jarige klimmer herboren. Zo werd hij 7e in Parijs-Nice, 3e in de Ronde van Catalonië en 10e in de Ronde van Romandië.

Op zijn sociale media schrijft Bernal dat hij zich nu in zijn vaderland zal klaarstomen voor de Tour de France. Daar zal hij met Tom Pidcock en Carlos Rodriguez het mooie weer moeten maken voor Ineos Grenadiers .

Colombian is set to join Rodríguez, Thomas, and Pidcock as part of formidable Ineos Grenadiers squad this July

Egan Bernal has announced that he'll be returning to the Tour de France this summer, with the resurgent Colombian set to form part of a strong Ineos Grenadiers selection alongside Carlos Rodríguez, Geraint Thomas , and Tom Pidcock.

The 27-year-old won the Tour four years ago but since 2022 has been working his way back to top form after an early season training accident.

Last year he returned to Grand Tour racing at the Tour and Vuelta a España and this spring he's been in his best form since the crash, stringing together seven top-10 results from eight races, including podium spots at O Gran Camiño and the Volta a Catalunya.

Writing on Instagram , Bernal confirmed his Tour participation.

"With blessings, I finish the first part of the season. Now in Colombia for a few days to prepare for a good Tour de France," Bernal wrote, without confirming which races he'll take on in the build-up to the race.

Bernal's schedule for the remainder of the 2024 season had been unclear, though his series of top results across 34 days of racing this spring have clearly persuaded Ineos Grenadiers hierarchy that he can compete at a high level once again this July.

His most recent victory came just over three years ago when he scored his second Grand Tour win at the Giro d'Italia.

A third place at the Colombian National Championships road race and second on the mountainous penultimate stage at the Volta a Catalunya – albeit 57 seconds behind Tadej Pogačar – rank as his best results so far this year. He also played a key role in helping Carlos Rodríguez to overall victory at the recent Tour de Romandie.

Ineos Grenadiers will also be bringing 2018 race winner Geraint Thomas to the Tour, with the Welshman this year taking on the Giro-Tour double for the second time in his career. His first attempt in 2017, however, saw him crash out of both.

Carlos Rodríguez, who finished fifth overall in Paris last July, is also down to race for the British squad, while 2022 L'Alpe d'Huez stage winner Tom Pidcock will be heading to the Tour for the third time in his career.
