Isla Damas Mangrove Kayak Tour
When you pick up your paddle to start the Mangrove Kayak Tour of Manuel Antonio , you will be embarking on a 4-hour journey like you’ve never experienced before.
Situated just past the Pacific Ocean’s breakwaters, the Manuel Antonio mangrove forests provide a captivating habitat that is both extremely tranquil and exciting to explore. As you serenely row along the soft currents of the coastline, you’ll get a peek at the paradise of Damas Island and its extraordinary plant and animal life.
A Haven for Manuel Antonio’s Wildlife
Gently rowing through the brackish waters into a world of rainforest fauna, the nature lover is in heaven on the Mangrove Kayak Tour. The natural protection of the mangroves makes this root-filled coast the perfect haven for fish, reptiles, and amphibians seeking shelter from predators.
Glance up through the branches of the trees to catch a glimpse of colorful parrots, tangled boa constrictors, and perhaps even a lounging three-toed sloth. Crabs hop from tree to tree while caimans, river turtles, and iguanas gaze out as you glide peacefully past.
Keep an eye out for every kayaker’s favorite encounter - a visit from the white-faced capuchin monkeys! These curious primates enjoy swinging about and saying hello to passing tourists.
Home to the Protected Mangrove Trees
As you skim under the brilliant green of the forest canopy, you’ll take in the unique and fascinating ecosystem of the Costa Rican mangrove. As if they are standing on stilts, the red mangrove trees sprout roots that break through the surface of the water. Buttonwood and white mangroves add their own gnarled roots to the branching maze springing from the edge of the rainforest into the briny waters.
A natural boundary separating the Pacific Ocean from the land, mangrove forests are a highly adaptable and valuable environment. The trees that give this biome its name thrive where it would be difficult for other flora to even survive, with its low oxygen levels, dense concentration of salt, and unstable tides. You’ll have a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience in nature!
Navigate your narrow boat beneath organic tunnels created by the trees. The mangroves’ distinctive roots help aerate their sap systems and filter the saltwater for the nourishment they need. Creating a buffer against flooding of the jungle, the trees also store large quantities of carbon in their soil - a great tool for mitigating climate change.
Kayaking through this swampy area, you’ll pass through a habitat Costa Rica is dedicated to protecting. These mangrove forests have been in danger of extinction, for they are some of the most productive environments in the world and rich in biodiversity.
Your Personal Guide and Expert
You won’t be traversing the canals of roots on your own. Each Mangrove Kayak Tour group will be accompanied by an experienced guide to help you make the most of your trip. Your guide will be well-versed in the unique features of the mangrove forest’s ecosystem and will be able to point out majestic herons, noble ospreys, and perhaps even help you catch a glimpse of a howler monkey or lumbering anteater.
Open to paddlers ages 8 and up, the Mangrove Kayak Tour is both fun and informative for all participants. Previous kayaking experience is not required, and your guide can lend a hand as needed. Your first-rate boat can seat either one or two people, so you can paddle with a partner if you prefer on this diverting excursion.
Top Off Your Adventure with a Costa Rican Picnic
Because the tides in this area vary, start times of the Mangrove Kayak Tour vary. But never fear - each one includes a delicious homemade lunch that you get to dig into either before or after your journey.
The Isla Damas Mangrove Kayak Tour is considered one of the best mangrove tours available in all Costa Rica. It’s a stimulating way to explore the natural beauty of a truly exceptional ecosystem in Manuel Antonio. Book your spot today!

About our tours.
We offer three modalities for this incredible adventure, and no matter which one you choose, you’ll have a similar experience. Our mangrove tours are available in kayak or boat. We also offer nocturnal tours, which are only conducted by boat.
All our mangrove tours last 2 hours, excluding transportation if necessary.
Regarding sightings, these vary depending on whether they are done during the day or at night. However, regardless of the tour you choose, you’ll be able to enjoy a wide variety of wildlife species that inhabit the mangrove forest.
Although sightings may be similar, they vary depending on the time of day, as some species are active while others sleep in the mangrove undergrowth.
Some of the species you can spot during the day include:
Among the species you can spot at night are:.
- Kingfishers
If you choose to do the tour in kayak you need to be prepared for a small workout! However, the tour will be slow-paced and no one will be left behind! You do not need to have any previous experience kayaking. You can choose to do the tour in a single- or a double kayak.
The essence of the tour is pretty much the same whether you choose to do it in boat or kayak, but since the boat is motor-operated, this gives a different kind of range, and you are able to travel deeper into the mangrove. Besides experiencing the smaller canals the boat will also take you out on the big, main canal that leads to the ocean. Here are not many animals to see, but it gives you a great sense of how big the area actually is.
The night mangrove tour is a 2-hour boat ride along channels. With a captain and bilingual guide, you’ll spot sleeping or hunting animals like snakes or crocodiles.
Only the guide will have a flashlight to minimize disturbance to hidden species.
What to expect when doing mangrove tour during daytime
We like to prepare our guests for the experience when it comes to schedule and what to bring, but besides that it is hard to know what to expect.
We do find ourselves in a natural habitat where we very much can hope to see some things or some type of animals and the guides do their very best to fulfill your wishes but again – this beautiful place is not a zoo and nothing is guaranteed. As long as you bring good vibes and a lot of pura vida, your guide will take care of the rest!
Recommendations for mangrove tour
Do not feed the animals. This doesn’t apply to this particular tour only, but is a general recommendation for your stay here in Costa Rica. Do not feed the animals. As tempting as it might be you are not doing these animals a favor. In fact you might end up hurting them even though your intentions were the exact opposite. In the mangrove, especially the White-faced Capucin monkeys might let you get up-close and personal with them, but do not forget that these are wild animals. We advise guests to enjoy these playful creatures from the distance and respect that we are visitors in their natural habitat.
For this tour we do recommend that you to wear practical clothes and might bring a hat and sunblock to protect your skin – especially if you are doing the tour by kayak. The boat has a roof, and you will not be as exposed to the sun. During daytime the mosquitos and insects are not very active and mosquito repellent is not a must. If you want to tip your guides, we recommend you to bring cash! Either dollars or the local currency – colones. Other than that you only have to bring your adventurous spirits and a lot of Pura Vida! The rest will be taken care of.
What is a mangrove forest?
Mangrove forests consist of trees and shrubs that live in costal saline or brackish water. Worldwide, there are about 80 different species of mangrove trees and in Costa Rica we see four different species – all represented in the mangroves of Damas. Red mangrove, black mangrove, white mangrove and pineapple mangrove (has nothing to do with pineapple fruit). This type of vegetation only grows in tropical and subtropical areas, since it cannot survive at colder temperatures.
Mangrove forests are easily recognizable by their dense tangle of prop roots that makes the trees appear to be standing on stilts above the surface. This construction of the roots allows the trees to handle the daily rise and fall of tides in the area. This root system in the mangrove forest attracts many different kinds of fish and small animals seeking food and shelter from predators.
Mangrove forests are one of the most vital ecosystems in the world and serve to stabilize the coastline and protect against erosion from storms, current, waves and tides.

A very special experience
My husband and I just got back from Costa Rica for our honeymoon and hands down, this may have been our favorite experience that we had. We kayaked into a bay, then jumped out of the kayaks and snorkeled for the first time in our lives. There were a few boats that pulled up with other snorkelers too, but it felt very special and worth the effort to kayak there. We lost track of how long we were there because it was just so peaceful floating and watching all of the fish. Our guide Alvin was very laid back and let us take our time, and shared some fruit with us before we kayaked back to the shore. For two amateurs the kayaking can be a bit tiresome but it was worth every minute. Thank you Alvin!
Great ocean kayak and snorkel experience
I had a great time on this tour. The guide was very friendly and knowledgeable
The kayaking was very fun. And the snorkeling was a blast. I would highly recommend this tour

Mangrove Kayak and Boat Tour - Manuel Antonio Costa Rica
Mangrove tour Manuel Antonio is a great opportunity to experience a vast variety of the different species that reside in this special type of forest and at the same time enjoy the spectacular settings and scenery that the mangroves of Damas have to offer.
Learn more about the tour schedule, the tour itself and what animals to keep an eye out for on this mangrove tour guided by local and experienced guides – either by boat or kayak.
What to bring
Mangrove tour schedule
The company will arrange pickups at your hotel or Airbnb, and the exact pickup-time will be giving upon confirmation, since this tour highly depends on the tide. The tour can only be carried out if there is enough water in the canals for the boat or kayaks to move around. After pick-ups we take off from Quepos and ride around 10 minutes to the small town of Damas, where the mangrove forest is located. Here your chosen means of transportation will be waiting to take you into the labyrinths of the mangrove.
An important note to make is that approximately 70% of the wildlife in the mangrove is nocturnal. This does not mean, that you are not able to see animals during the day, but they might be harder to spot. An upside to this is, that during the day you get to appreciate the stunning nature, the green and lush vegetation reflecting in the water of the calm canals.
The mangrove tour starts right where the transportation drops you off, and from here you slowly sail into the labyrinths of the mangrove forest. As said most of the wildlife in the mangrove is nocturnal. However, your guide will do his best to find animals and will be keeping an eye on even the smallest movement or abnormality in the vegetation. The guides know exactly what to look for and where to look for it.
Mangrove Kayak tour

During the mangrove tour you will have the chance to spot different types of birds, snakes, frogs, monkeys. lizards, turtles or even a sloth slowly moving in the treetops.
The mangrove is a vital and fascinating ecosystem and is home to a diverse wildlife, which gives us great possibilities to see many of these animals on the mangrove tour. However, we like to remind our guests that this beautiful place is not a zoo – we do find ourselves in the animals’ natural habitat and nature does not give any guarantees. We are here on their terms, which we do respect with great admiration.

About your tour guides and safety on board
As explained earlier, the guides are local and have plenty of experience. Therefore, they are highly qualified to be guiding you on this amazing experience. The motor-operated boat is simple and just perfect for the purpose – gliding easily in and out of the canals. The boat is filled with enough lifejackets for everyone and more to spare.
If you are doing the tour by kayak, you will be equipped with a lifejacket. The tour will be slow-paced and no former experience is necessary. If you have any questions regarding these two means of transportation or the safety involved, feel free to contact us.
What to expect when doing mangrove tour during daytime

Here are some of the animals you can expect to see during the mangrove tour during the day
The mangrove is an ideal place for many types of birds, and this tour is very popular among birdwatchers. Many migratory birds take refuge here during the wither months. This type of vegetation is surrounded by shallow waters and full of fish, insects and reptiles hiding on the branches. The birds have plenty of food and places to hide from predators. On the mangrove tour we see birds such as Herons, Egrets, White Ibis, Kingfisher and Great Kiskadee to name a few!
Crocodiles also live in the mangrove forrest – same for the other species living there, they have great opportunities to feed and hide. During the day you might be able to spot them on the river beds, where they lay in the sun the get their body temperature back under control after hunting in the cold waters. During the night you will not see them laying around on the river beds – at this time of the day you might be able to spot their yellow eyes in the waters.

Traveler Comments
It was an unforgettable experience kayaking around the mangroves. Our guide Lizandro was easy going and funny and communicative. It's scary for us first timers in the beginning but we got into the rhythm eventually. My husband and son were in the same kayak together and somehow it flipped over and they were in the water. Lizandro came to assist right away and according to him, it was first time under his watch for passengers to flip over. He was calm and in control and was able to turn right over the kayak and got my family back into it without further issues. Too bad I didn't bring my camera for lasting memory of this incident 😂.
Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. The lunch was fabulous.
Our guide Johan was very accommodating- switching our lunch to after the tour. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the wildlife and mangroves and his English was excellent.

Tour Reviews
My fiancée and I signed up for the mangrove kayaking experience, and Amigos Del Rio delivered from the moment we were picked up outside our Airbnb to the moment they dropped us off after a delicious lunch at their home base. Orlando was an excellent guide, and a Quepos native with a palpable passion for his hometown, who taught us not only about the indigenous creatures of the Damas estuary and mangrove habitat, but about the history of Quepos as well. Seeing the capuchin monkeys up close was the highlight of our trip. I highly recommend Amigos Del Rio for your next adventure in Quepos. Pura vida!

Damas Island Mangrove Tour: Wildlife Watching in Manuel Antonio
October 25, 2019 By Sammi 11 Comments
Mangroves are one of the most important type of forests in the world and being a tropical country, Costa Rica is home to many extensive mangrove forests. One of them, Damas Island, is right outside of Manuel Antonio , just a 45 minute drive away. Home to a plethora of wildlife, the Damas Island Mangrove tour is an excellent day excursion from Manuel Antonio.
This tour is excellent for young families and senior citizens who want to enjoy some beautiful scenery and see interesting animals. Read on to see what the tour is like and how to get our tour discount!
The Damas Island Mangrove Tour by Boat
The Damas Island is in the Puntarenas province, 168 kilometers (104 miles) and about a 3 hour and 10 minute drive from San Jose.
Times of Tour
As the Damas Island Mangrove tour can only be done in high tide, the time of the tour depends on the tide.
What’s Included
Boat, bilingual guide, refreshments, lunch/dinner.
Damas Island is about 6 kilometers north of Quepos. You will be taken to a local’s house to board the boat.
Other things to know
The boat is a covered river boat.
It is recommended not to make other plans for the same day you do the mangrove tour since this tour starts depending on the time.
They offer single and double kayaks.
Our Experience
As we went end of September, there were only two boats in the mangrove doing the same boat tour and we had one boat all to ourselves! Although it was rainy season, we had pretty good weather for most of the tour. It was very sunny when the tour started and then halfway, it started to rain lightly. It rained about 30 minutes and then it stopped for the rest of the tour.
We saw a ton of animals like crocodiles, monkeys, kingfishers and bats and below are some photos of them. We didn’t see that many birds since the migratory birds were still making their way back south.
Our guide gave us some interesting facts about mangroves but it was really our boat captain who had the sharp eyes to point out the wildlife. He found the mangrove boa, bats and crocodile! Since the boat captains are out there everyday, they really know what to look for.
The boat tour is excellent for families with young children or senior citizens. All they have to do is sit back and relax.
The Damas Island Mangrove Tour by Kayak
You can also this tour by way of kayak instead of a motorized boat. You will stay inside the mangroves the whole time and it is also around 2 hours. The water is super calm so it’s really easy to paddle and on a kayak, you can go through the smaller water channels that the large motorized boats can’t go.
Personally, we loved the tour by kayak. Motorized boat is nice as well but if you want to get closer to nature, kayak is the way to go. You can go through the smaller channels and get closer to the animals without disturbing them with a motor.
Additionally, since September is low season, we were the only two people doing the kayak tour so it was extremely quiet and we could hear ALL the animals around. It was quite an experience!
Here is a short video of the Damas Island boat and kayak tour.

What is the duration of this outing? My wife is handicapped, always in a wheelchair. Would she be able to board and depart the boat safely? We could use a cushion for her seat (from her wheelchair) to make her more comfortable.. Thank you. The late tides are a concern for we have been in this area before and know it’s extremely warm.

I would like to kayak & my husband take the boat. Can this be done at the same time?
Hi Beverley, yes! That’s perfectly fine. Just write a note in the comment section of our booking page https://mytanfeet.com/special-deals/quepos-and-manuel-antonio-tours-discount/ that you’d like one boat and one single kayak.

If we are confident kayakers, could we do this without a tour, is there a place to rent just the kayaks?
February 1, 2021
I think you have to go with a guide (from what I was told) because it is easy to get lost in the mangrove and there are animals like caimans in the mangrove so it’s better to go with a guide.
January 6, 2020
Hi Arie, you can still do this as a tour from Jaco!
January 5, 2020
Hi what if we are based in Jaco? How do we get to this place and join the kayak tour?

Is the Kayak Tour guided as well?…and safe with all the crocodiles?
It is guided! The crocodiles don’t get as far into the mangrove compared to the boat tour, on kayak you go closer to shore. On the boat you go further out to the rivermouth.
