Making music at sea with Disney Cruise Line: Meet Katie, Pianist

KB Ship Life 1

“I’ve always wanted to work on cruise ships, so when I saw the audition for Disney Cruise Line, I knew that I would be auditioning for a company that takes pride in what they produce and show. If they wanted me, then that meant that I was good enough for the BEST! This meant a lot to me, especially as a young woman in this industry.”

Meet Katie Bell, a pianist onboard the Disney Wish! Katie has been entertaining guests with Disney Cruise Line since 2023 but began playing piano over 20 years ago inspired by seeing her brother play and sing in pubs and piano bars.

“A friend of mine sent me the audition information and I decided to send in a video on a whim. I almost didn’t even record my self tape because I thought no one would see it!”

Musicians with Disney Cruise Line bring a wide variety of entertainment to life in venues across the fleet of ships, from themed lounges to restaurants to the incredible Grand Hall on the Disney Wish. Depending on the venue, musicians could be playing show tunes, Disney favorites, classic rock, jazz, and more, so preparing for each performance is key.

KB Ship Life 4

“Typically, I spend my mornings resting before getting lunch and then go over my set lists for the evening. I make sure to stretch and relax before I go and work in the evenings. I like to read in between sets! And if I have time, I love soaking up the sun of Castaway Cay!”

Maintaining Disney’s reputation for unparalleled entertainment challenges the onboard musicians to consistently improve and broaden their experience as performers.

“What inspires me is being able to see how I can grow and push myself as a performer every day, as well as inspiring those around me and kindling their passion for music. Playing every day can be a challenge both physically and mentally, but at the same time, it’s also extremely rewarding to witness my growth in the past year from playing so much! It’s also so rewarding when I play a song for a guest that means a lot to them and see that magic of live music hit them.”

KB 3

Some of Katie’s favorite parts of her role are being able to do something that she loves each day while working with a team of incredibly talented musicians.

“My favorite part is connecting with so many people all with incredible stories and experiences! One time a dad brought his young daughter into the Keys Lounge while I was performing, and she got so excited to see a ‘pretty girl’ playing piano and singing just like she does. It truly warmed my heart knowing that I was inspiring her to keep playing.”

The biggest surprise throughout her time with Disney Cruise Line? “How many connections I’ve made, stories I’ve heard, and incredible people I’ve met - including my boyfriend! The Disney Cruise Line community is truly incredible."

KB 1

For those considering pursuing a musician contract with Disney Cruise Line, Katie encourages them to go for it.

“Don’t doubt your skills and talent. It’s a really fun gig that allows you to explore your artistry, travel, meet other musicians, and make lasting memories! It’s never too early or too late to make your dreams come true. As a young woman musician, I always feel so much pride going to work knowing that I’m inspiring those around me and showing them that you can create Disney magic at any age and skill.”

These major cruise lines are changing their displayed prices. Here's why.

jobs on a disney cruise ship

  • California Senate Bill 478 – also known as the “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute” – will take effect Monday.
  • The law bans businesses from listing or advertising “a price for a good or service that does not include all required fees or charges other than certain government taxes and shipping costs.”

That is changing how many major cruise lines display their prices, and not just for travelers in the Golden State.

Cruise prices may look higher as of next week – but that doesn’t mean they are.

California Senate Bill 478 – also known as the “Honest Pricing Law” or “Hidden Fees Statute” – will take effect Monday. The law bans businesses from listing or advertising “a price for a good or service that does not include all required fees or charges other than certain government taxes and shipping costs,” according to an FAQ page from the state’s Office of the Attorney General.

“The statute does not change what price a business can charge or what may be included in that cost,” the attorney general's office said. “The law simply requires that the price listed include all mandatory charges.”

Which cruise lines will change how their pricing is listed?

◾ Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises will update the way they display pricing in the U.S. Customers “will now see pricing that is inclusive of their selected cruise fare and all required taxes and fees,” a spokesperson for the brands’ parent company, Royal Caribbean Group , told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. “We are also supporting our travel partners across the country ahead of this upcoming change.”

◾ Norwegian Cruise Line will do the same, incorporating “applicable taxes, fees and port expenses” into advertised prices in the U.S. and Canada by Monday.“This change will only impact the way we display our prices and will not affect the prices that our guests pay to enjoy a cruise with us or the portion of the cruise fare that is commissionable for our travel partners,” a spokesperson for the line said in an emailed statement. “We are committed to delivering exceptional vacation experiences at every step of the cruise journey and we hope this change will provide our guests with a more satisfying booking experience.”

◾ MSC Cruises added government fees and taxes to advertised overall prices for U.S. bookings on Wednesday. “These costs are now seamlessly integrated into the total advertised price, providing a simple and transparent booking experience that will not impact the overall price paid by our guests,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

What are junk fees?: Travelers are drowning in them during the summer of surcharges

◾ Disney Cruise Line plans to comply with the law.

◾ Carnival Corp., which operates major lines such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and others, also made the change nationally to ensure consistency in advertised pricing, according to a spokesperson for the company.“The great news is that the final price paid hasn't changed, simply the way it is displayed,” they said in an emailed statement. “Our cruise lines still deliver the same great, affordable value and unforgettable cruise experiences vacationers love.”Several others already wrap those costs into their advertised prices, including the high-end Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Oceania Cruises – also part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. – Viking and Explora Journeys , the luxury brand from the MSC Group.

Disney announces where its cruise ships will be sailing during late-2025, early-2026

jobs on a disney cruise ship

Disney Cruise Line is preparing to debut its new cruise ship, the Treasure, at Port Canaveral later this year.

But it also is planning ahead as far as 2026, with the cruise line's latest announcement of ship schedules out of Port Canaveral and other ports.

Disney's just-released ship schedules for October 2025 through May 2026 ― Disney's winter and spring cruise seasons ― shows that the cruise line will have three ships based on Port Canaveral during that time.

Disney currently bases two ships at Port Canaveral — the Fantasy and the Wish. But it will have three, starting when the Treasure starts sailing in December.

Where Disney ships are headed

What you'll discover on Disney Treasure: Here's a lineup of some restaurants, entertainment and lodging on Disney's Treasure ship

Here are the newly announced plans and itineraries for Disney ships that will be based at Port Canaveral:

  • The 2,713-passenger Disney Magic will have four- and five-night sailings from Port Canaveral to the Bahamas in October 2025, before switching home ports to San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the end of October, then to Galveston, Texas, in November 2025.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Fantasy will sail out of Port Canaveral on three-, four- and five-night cruises to the Bahamas starting in November 2025, replacing the Magic on the port's schedule. Before coming to Port Canaveral, the Fantasy will offer a special 13-night trans-Atlantic cruise sailing leaving Oct. 20, 2024, from Southampton, England, to Port Canaveral, with two port-of-call stops in Spain and one in Portugal.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Treasure will offer seven-night cruises to the Eastern and Western Caribbean from Port Canaveral.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Wish will offer three- and four-night cruises to the Bahama from Port Canaveral.

All the cruises out of Port Canaveral will include a port-of-call stop at one or both of Disney's private islands in the Bahamas — Castaway Cay and the new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, which had its first port-of-call visits this month.

"That's a lot of options out of Port Canaveral," said Scott Sanders, owner of the Celebration-based Disney Cruise Line Blog , which is not affiliated with Disney itself.

The Fantasy and the Magic will be switching places at Port Canaveral. The Fantasy currently is based at Port Canaveral, but will leave in May 2025, replaced by the Magic, before the Fantasy returns in November 2025.

The addition of a third Disney ship at Port Canaveral at the end of this year means Disney will be using two cruise terminals there, rather than one. Currently, when they are in port, Disney ships dock at Cruise Terminal 8, a terminal primarily used by Disney. But the third home-ported ship will result in Disney also using Cruise Terminal 10, which now currently is used primarily by MSC and Norwegian.

This is where Disney's two other ships will be during the fall 2025 to spring 2026 time frame:

  • The 2,713-passenger Disney Wonder will have multiple home ports, including Vancouver, British Columbia; Honolulu; Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; Auckland, New Zealand; and San Diego.
  • The 4,000-passenger Disney Dream will sail out of Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades with three-, four- and five-night sailings to the Bahamas, as well as five-night sailings to the Western Caribbean.

Disney will offer themed holiday sailings on some of it 2025 cruises, with Halloween on the High Seas cruises in September and October, then Very Merrytime sailings in November and December.

Bookings for the general public will open Friday for the winter 2024 through spring 2025 Disney cruises. Bookings for members of various Disney Cruise Line clubs open earlier this week.

Sanders said it is unusual for Disney to announce cruise ship schedules for two seasons at once. But he believes that is related to Disney planning a special announcement with the next few months about itineraries for two other Disney ships now under construction that will joining the fleet in 2025 ― the Disney Adventure and the Disney Destiny.

The 6,000-passenger Adventure will sail out of Singapore. Disney acquire that ship — partially built and then known as the Global Dream — from another cruise company. No home port has been announced for the 4,000-passenger Destiny.

The Best New Cruise Ships

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas will be the world's biggest new cruise ship.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

U.S. News has compiled this roundup of new cruise ships that have just set sail or are scheduled to launch later in 2023 and in 2024, plus a preview of new ships coming in 2025 and beyond. The list includes everything from expedition and luxury yacht-style vessels to reimagined ships and megaships – plus the debut of a brand-new cruise line.

The ship features eight distinct neighborhoods – including the new Surfside neighborhood, a colorful space geared toward family fun with kids clubs, Splashaway Bay, themed eateries and bars, adjacent staterooms and more.

There are four additional new neighborhoods as well. Thrill Island features Category 6, the largest water park at sea, while Chill Island boasts the line's first swim-up bar and The Hideaway features the first suspended infinity pool at sea. AquaDome, the impressive glass-enclosed space at the top of the ship, is home to the AquaTheater, panoramic ocean views, a waterfall, and bars and restaurants.

One notable highlight is Park19, a top-deck space with activities for kids of all ages, including the Sea Breeze Rollglider, the first ride of its kind on a cruise ship. This new attraction soars 19 decks high and offers unparalleled views of the ocean below.

Once on board, guests will discover new entertainment venues like the Bright Lights Society show bar and more wide-open spaces throughout the ship, as well as Cunard 's first two-story theater. New international dining options include Japanese restaurant Aji Wa with sushi and omakase menus, plus Indian cuisine at Aranya. There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.

Disney's biggest cruise ship will carry 9,000 people on cruises in Asia

Kristy Tolley

Would you travel around the world to sail on Disney Cruise Line 's biggest ship yet?

On Wednesday, Disney Cruise Line announced new details about Disney Adventure , which will become the line's biggest vessel when it debuts in Singapore in 2025. At 208,000 tons, Disney Adventure will be about 44% larger than the line's current biggest cruise ship, Disney Wish .

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Disney Adventure will also look a little different from the Disney ships you know and love. The vessel was originally ordered for Asia-based Dream Cruises, which collapsed in early 2022. Disney bought it from liquidators for the brand and plans to debut it in 2025.

As a result, the line must work with a preexisting ship layout, a whole new ballgame for Disney. The company has historically controlled the design and construction process of its resorts, both on land and sea, from ideation to completion. The 208,000-ton ship was originally designed to accommodate a whopping 9,000 passengers, plus thousands of crew members. However, Disney plans to reconfigure it to hold 6,700 guests and 2,500 crew members. Still, that could mean more than 9,000 people on board when the ship sails at full capacity.

Cruisers on Disney Adventure will be sharing the ship with far more people than on the line's previous vessels. The five ships in Disney's fleet range from 83,969 tons to 144,000 tons and hold a maximum of about 4,000 passengers. (Disney's oldest and smallest ship, Disney Magic , can accommodate, at most, 2,500 guests.) Another way to put it into perspective — the world's current largest ship, Royal Caribbean's 250,800-ton Icon of the Seas , holds 7,600 passengers.

Despite the differences in size and layout, Disney Adventure will still immerse passengers in the brand's signature style of lively, magical spaces.

jobs on a disney cruise ship

The ship will feature new themed areas that showcase Disney's core pillars of storytelling — imagination, discovery, fantasy and adventure.

An open-air performance venue will feature a lush garden and elements reminiscent of an enchanted valley. Dubbed Disney Imagination Garden, the space will draw on the adventures of Disney characters like Mowgli and Moana.

Shopping and dining opportunities within the ship's Disney Discovery Reef area will feature popular aquatic and nautical characters from movies like "The Little Mermaid," "Finding Nemo" and "Lilo & Stitch."

San Fransokyo Street, a family entertainment area and street market, will offer interactive games and activities, shops and cinemas themed around the world of "Big Hero 6."

The ship's pool area, Wayfinder Bay, will feature an open-air poolside retreat with panoramic sea views amid Pacific Islands-themed environs.

Town Square will be the hub for lounges, cafes, restaurants, shops and entertainment venues. Here, passengers can immerse themselves in the world of Disney princesses, such as Cinderella, Snow White and Rapunzel.

Marvel Landing will host new immersive attractions that celebrate the Marvel superheroes. Passengers can also enjoy watery fun in Toy Story Place, a whimsical interactive space featuring water play areas and themed food venues.

Additionally, guests can expect Disney-level service, engaging dining options and top-notch entertainment, all hallmarks of the brand.

Disney also shared that the ship's exterior will reflect the fleet's iconic Mickey Mouse-inspired colors, complete with the line's signature red funnels.

North Americans will have to travel far to set sail on Disney Adventure. Disney's new ship will sail three- and four-night cruises departing from Singapore's Marina Bay Cruise Centre for at least the next five years in partnership with the Singapore Tourism Board. The line has yet to reveal specific details of the itineraries. Short cruises out of Singapore will likely draw an international crowd, with many passengers hailing from Asia.

When Disney Adventure begins service, it will be the seventh ship in the Disney fleet. The line currently operates five ships; a sixth, Disney Treasure , is due to debut in December.

SINGAPORE: Besides seeing-eye dogs, there will soon be more assistance dogs in Singapore to support those who are deaf or have physical disabilities.

To ensure these working canines help their companions with special needs overcome some of their daily challenges, more access will be extended to them in public housing, public transport and food places.

Guide dogs trained to lead the blind or visually impaired are currently allowed in such places, but access will also be extended to assistance dogs that support people with other disabilities.

Assistance dogs matched to people with disabilities living in Housing Board flats by charity organisation K9Assistance can also live with their handlers in the flats, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth Eric Chua announced on Friday (June 28).

Like seeing-eye dogs, most assistance dogs are usually labrador retrievers, which are not allowed in HDB flats. Other assistance dogs may be of other breeds.

“Agencies such as the Land Transport Authority and the Singapore Food Agency are also working out the necessary details to allow such assistance dogs on public transport and licensed food establishments,” Chua said, speaking at the K9Assistance Partners Appreciation Breakfast attended by more than 80 representatives from government, diplomatic, social services and business communities.

He also said that the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), which issued guidance in 2019 on guide dogs for the blind, would revise its advice to encompass assistance dogs supporting people with physical disabilities, visual impairment and the deaf and hard of hearing.

A spokesman for Muis told The Straits Times that its advice regarding assistance dogs is still being refined and will be ready “in the coming months”.

There are currently nine active working assistance dogs in Singapore, all of which are guide dogs for the blind. Eight of the nine were trained and paired by Guide Dogs Singapore. The ninth dog came directly from Australia.

Singapore’s first guide dog was brought here from Australia in 1982. However, due to the lack of public support and facilities then, the dog had to be returned.

The door was opened for guide dogs here only in 2005, when blind businessman Kua Cheng Hock, now 68, brought his guide dog Kendra into Singapore, and received support from MPs and government agencies he approached.

The labrador, which was born and trained in California, died of a heart attack in 2014, aged 11.

K9Assistance, a registered charity founded in April 2020, has been working with the Government to give these assistance dogs and their owners access to more public spaces.

Its executive director, Cassandra Chiu, who lost her sight at the age of eight due to a rare genetic eye disease and who has a guide dog, said the benefits “should not just remain within the blind community”.

“As a disabled person, I hope other types of disabilities could also benefit from these tremendous life-changing benefits... and I think that’s why it’s so important that we have the support from stakeholders and the different segments of the community,” she said.

“K9Assistance had been working very hard over the last couple of years to get the different levels of support from businesses and from members of the public.”

More than 50 businesses across the different industries have pledged their support in welcoming assistance dog teams onto their premises and to educate front-line staff and customers.

Singapore’s approach to disability inclusion is guided by its Enabling Masterplan and to enable those with disabilities to live independently.

Chua noted that physical and social environments are being changed to be more inclusive of people with disabilities.

This includes improving accessibility of public spaces and buildings, enhancing public transport infrastructure to help them navigate independently, and educating the general public on disability to encourage more positive mindsets and attitudes.

People with disabilities’ access to community activities, such as mainstream sports, recreation and social activities, and resources are through Enabling Services Hubs, the first of which was launched in August 2023.

Chua said that SG Enable will be launching two more in 2025.

Like her predecessor Kendra, Sienna the four-year-old labrador retriever is also paving the way for canines helping people – this time with special needs other than blindness.

She is Singapore’s first ambassador for the different trained assistance dogs here, and made her debut at the June 28 event by demonstrating how an assistance dog would help those living with different disabilities.

For instance, if a physically impaired handler were to drop his mobile phone without realising it, Sienna would retrieve the device and nudge it into his hand.

Ahead of the phased changes, K9Assistance will step up its engagement with businesses and the public through campaigns targeting various sectors and communities.

The charity will also raise funds for the training of assistance dogs before they can be brought into Singapore and placed with disabled handlers at no cost. - The Straits Times/ANN
