Turkey Travel Blog_How To Travel From Ankara To Cappadocia

If you’re under the impression that the capital of Turkey is Istanbul, you need to take a geography lesson! However, many people actually believe this to be true.

Sure, Istanbul USED to be the capital city back in the days of the Ottoman Empire, but it’s Ankara these days, and it’s a city that’s full of historical sights to see and modern-day fun to be had.

Ankara is a pretty cosmopolitan city, and you’ll find plenty to do during your days and nights. The city sits in the center of the country, and it sometimes snows, so if you’re visiting during the winter , remember to pack warm clothing!

One place that you must visit during your time in Ankara is Anıtkabir. This is the huge mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic and the country’s first president. It was Atatürk who declared Ataturk the country’s capital back in 1923. Visiting Anıtkabir is an emotional experience, and you’ll also be in awe at the architecture and size.

  • Things To Do In Ankara

However, once you’ve spent time in Ankara, you might be itching to head to a famous destination not that far away – Cappadocia.

Cappadocia is located southeast of Ankara and sits in a semi-arid part of the country. This is where you will see those famous’ fairy chimney’ rock formations, endless hot air balloons in bright colors, and that famous Turkish breakfast overlooking it all. Cappadocia is located in Goreme, which is close to the city of Nevsehir. Some of the houses in Cappadocia date back to the Bronze Age, and you’ll have the chance to stay in a cave hotel , literally carved into the walls of the caves centuries ago.

  • Things To Do In Cappadocia

So, how do you get to Cappadocia from Anakara or from Ankara to Cappadocia?

There are three ways to get from Ankara to Cappadocia: by car, by bus, and by train. You can fly to Cappadocia if you want to, but you would have to fly to Istanbul first and then down to Nevsehir, as there are no direct flights. This would be a pretty long-winded journey and, therefore, not really worth it.

If you do want to go that route, look up flights with Turkish Airlines or the low-cost airline Pegasus Airlines with flights between Kayseri Erkilet Airport, Nevsehir Kapadokya Airport, and Ankara Esenboga Airport.

Ankara to Cappadocia By Car

Albania Rent A Car Tips - Driving in Albania

The fastest (and best option) is to drive. The journey between the two locations is 302km and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Remember that Ankara is a bustling city, and Cappadocia is an extremely famous tourist destination; there’s likely to be traffic at some point, as well as the possibility of unpredictable road conditions.

You will first travel from Ankara to Nevsehir via the Ankara – Tarsus Otoyolu and O-21 road. It’s worth a quick stop-off in Nevsehir before you carry on to Goreme and into Cappadocia.

To head back to Ankara, reverse the same information.

Turkey Bus Travel - Inside the bus in Turkey

A comfortable option is to travel by bus between Cappadocia and Ankara. Two main bus companies serve the Ankara-Cappadocia route:

Both run bus routes of around four services per day from Ankara bus station, either directly to Cappadocia bus station or to Nevsehir. From Nevsehir, you can take a taxi or a minibus to Goreme.

The fastest bus between Ankara and Cappadocia will take around 5 hours, depending on traffic and whether you must wait for a bus in Nevsehir. However, there are regular services throughout the day.

It’s a good idea to book your ticket ahead of your journey. You can do this on the company’s website or visit a high street store for either Kamil Koc or Metro. Alternatively, book your ticket at Cappadocia or Ankara’s main bus terminal at the company’s kiosk. When heading back to Ankara, booking your ticket beforehand is undoubtedly worthwhile, as this is always a busy route.

Ankara To Cappadocia Train

The other option is to travel by train to Cappadocia and Ankara. Although the train journey is a little longer, it will show you some beautiful landscapes as you travel, especially as you move into Goreme.

First, you must take the Ankara to Himmetdede train, which takes 6 hours and 35 minutes and runs once daily. Then, you’ll need to connect to Goreme. From there, which is best done by taxi. The journey will take about 50 minutes, depending on traffic, so bear that in mind when deciding whether traveling by train is a good idea for you.

When traveling back to Ankara from Cappadocia, be sure to book your ticket ahead of time via the station or the TCDD online booking service, as there is only one train per day in this direction.

7 Days Best of Istanbul and Best of Cappadocia Package Tour

7 Days Best of Istanbul and Best of Cappadocia Package

Excellent itinerary to key highlights in Istanbul and Cappadocia. Through the local Istanbul support of The City of Sulton (Ozgur) excellent tour guides were assigned all along the tours. A must to include in future itineraries is the Hot Air Balloon ride...Not to be missed. Some of the included meals in Istanbul were marginal "tourist stops" and yet adequate. Advertised as "Full Course Deluxe" was "tourist". Cappadocia... excellent dining choices. Recital Hotel in Istanbul was a perfect location and close to local attractions. Our hotel in Cappadocia was changed a couple times before arrival.... Under Cave Hotel had great owners were very kind and supportive. It was located along a very busy street yet walking distance to town center. Only 2 rooms had A/C upon arrival... they were just installing them. It was a great choice. Accommodated part of my group who requested room changes. Communications at times a bit confusing... I accept part of that problem and eventually everything worked out wonderful. Thank you TourRadar AND Ozgur of City of Sultans Travel

I am so glad I picked this tour during my stay in Istanbul. There were so many different highlights from start to finish. The tour guide was very informative and the tour wouldn’t have been the same without the extra information being provided every step of the way. The views were extraordinary and the landmarks were all fascinating and well put together. It was also great being picked up and dropped off at my hotel in Istanbul. I am a very fussy eater but I have to say that even the meals that are included in this package cannot be faulted in anyway. The hotels provided were also well presented and very clean I will definitely be booking more tours with tour altinkum the next time I go to turkey.

It was a truly well organised and magical holiday! We had the best time and everything ran like clockwork. Ismail was the most helpful person and kept us up to date at all times. We are so impressed with him and the tour reps in Capadocia . The tour itself was amazing and, considering the short time we were there, we covered so many interesting sites and met lovely people and laughed so much. We will 100% book with you again. Very very happy customers. Soly & Tim ????????

Waking up in the morning with the skies overhead filled with colorful hot air balloons was a sight to remember forever! Next time we come we will definitely take a balloon ride. The places that the tour guides took us were very interesting and the guides were extremely knowledgeable and thoughtful (especially Ms Cini!!) The food was absolutely delicious!

What people love about Cappadocia Tours

Tour was great. Two things to note: tour stated that the maximum amount of people was 18. Actual amount of people was 31. The hotel in Istanbul was outdated. It would have been a better experience to stay at an updated hotel
Had such a great time !! Our tour guide Nadir, was a very caring person, and he was very professional. He had great knowledge about Turkey, thanks to him we learned a lot. Turkey was a very beatiful country, I definitely want to come again. Overall the hotels were clean and comfortable. Highly recommend this tour !
The best part of the tour was the organization, and Cappadocia did not disappoint! Each driver and tour guide was on time, even early in most cases. They were very polite and made me feel safer as a lone traveling woman.

What to expect.

Time-traveling machines may strictly belong to sci-fi films and books, but historical sites have proven time and again that you don’t need one to travel to the past; all you need is a good pair of eyes and your imagination.

Hattusa is one such site, and considering its Hittite roots; it is the only one of its kind. The ancient city will transport you 4000 years back to the bronze age and reveal the story of a people considered a myth for the better part of modern history.

The site is pretty extensive, so prepare for a couple of hours of trekking and a few engaging history lessons, facts, and legends.

Even now, 1400 years later, the entrance to the Hittite capital of Hattusa feels like the entrance to the greatest city in the world.

Itinerary Details

Depending on where you’ll be at the time of the tour, private transfer from your hotel to Alacahoyuk or early morning drive from Ankara or Cappadocia to Bogazkale.

The History of Hattusa

The story of the land where Hattusa lies starts around 5,000 years ago, three millennia before the birth of Christ. An indigenous people, the Hatti, occupied the land around modern-day Bogazkale and called the area “Land of the Hatti.” They established a small city-state called Hattusa and, over the centuries, managed to keep their state intact despite occasional attacks from the Akkadians. However, after maintaining their civilization for close to a thousand years, their downfall would come at the hands of the neighboring city of Kussara (presumably the origin of the Hittites). Kusarra’s ruler, King Anitta, laid siege to Hattusa and managed to breach its walls. With no intentions of Annexing the city-state, set the city ablaze and cursed the land, declaring that no king after him should resettle Hattusa, lest the Stormgod strikes the new king dead.

The curse didn’t hold for long because decades later, a new king from Kussara went on to rebuild the city. The Hittite-speaking king even changed his name to Hattusili (translates to “one from Hattusa“). By rebuilding and resettling Hatussa, the king set the foundation for what would go on to become the Hittite Empire. The capital of this new empire was the city of Hattusa.

The empire was ruled by about 27 Great Kings during its lifetime, most of whom had royal seats in Hattusa. The capital had to be changed twice after suffering attacks by the Kaskians, but the Hittites returned to Hattusa each time.

The city peaked between the 17th and 13th centuries BC, during which the Hittites enjoyed control over most of Anatolia and their rule reached as far as northern Syria. This expansion resulted in a clash with the Egyptians, culminating in the Battle of Kadesha and signing the first-ever peace treaty in human history.

Hattusa covered an area of 1.8 square km, having both inner and outer city walls. The inner city was home to several temples and administrative buildings housed in a large citadel, with the acropolis sitting on a high ridge. The outer city had elaborate gateways, four temples, and numerous residential structures. In addition, it had an 8km wall that surrounded the entire city. At its peak, the town could have housed up to 50,000 inhabitants.

In the 13th century BC, internal repressions allowed the Phrygians a window to invade Hattussa, during which they burnt and demolished the city. A small Phrygian settlement returned to the town in the 9th century BC, followed by the Romans and Byzantines, but it never regained its former glory.

Before its discovery in 1833, Hattusa was much like Atlantis; there were many myths and legends around it, but no one could prove it ever existed. Luckily, archeological excavations have brought the ancient city back to life, or at least partly.

During your visit, Hattusa’s ruins will give you a glimpse of life in the Hittite period. First, start at the Lion Gate, named after the lion statues carved on either entrance side. There is also the King’s Gate and the magnificent Sphinx Gate. Next, marvel at the modern reconstruction of a section of the city wall, explore the awe-inspiring Yer Kapi (an impressive stone tunnel 70m long) and try to decipher Hittite inscriptions on other attractions on the site.

How far is Hattusa from Ankara?

The ancient site of Hattusa sits 124 miles (200km) East of Ankara, about a 4-hour drive from the city.

How far is Hattusa from Cappadocia?

To get to Hattusa from Cappadocia, you will have to travel approximately 95 miles (153 KM) in about 3 hours.

The company provided an excellent guide in Tayfun who was very familiar with the site and very informative on the Hittite history and civilisation. Our driver, Mustafa, was very professional and drove sensibly in the quite heavy rain that lasted most of the drive to and from the site. Fortunately, the visit itself was mostly in dry conditions. The trip lived up to my expectations and I would recommend it to anyone interested in archaeology.
