5 of the best Bruny Island tours from Hobart

An hour south of Hobart in Tasmania, there’s a special island wilderness offering rugged coastline, tranquil beaches and spectacular views. Tours of Bruny Island run daily from Hobart, often focussing on the natural splendour of South Bruny National Park and the island’s excellent wildlife spotting opportunities. Fairy penguins, fur seals and white wallabies are native species often spotted on land, while albatross and wedge tailed eagles bring excitement to the skies. There’s also plenty in store for foodies, with local produce and one of Australia’s southernmost wineries found on Bruny Island.

Food tours and wildlife tours are not the only types of trip to be had from Hobart. You can take a day tour that mixes both of these along with other experiences, while a boat tour allows greater access to the coves and beaches that take longer to reach by car and ferry. Choosing the right tour for you can be time consuming, so we have condensed all the best Bruny Island tours from Hobart into this list of our favourite five. Important factors in the selection process included each tour’s itinerary, value for money, the feedback from previous travellers and the eco-friendly provisions made by the tour operators.

What to Bring on a Bruny Island Tour from Hobart

Bruny Island weather is unpredictable and variable most of the year. So you can expect to experience all types of weather in a single day. I visited the island in November and experienced pure blue skies with warm sun, cold brisk wind and a sprinklings of rain. No matter what, come prepared with layers for your day tour to Bruny Island from Hobart.

A good rain jacket and wind breaker will prepare you for the weather Bruny Island will undoubtedly deliver. Bring sunscreen , a ball cap for protecting your head, and good walking shoes for some of Tasmania’s best nature trails. I didn’t personally experience many bugs, but insect repellant is always a good idea on your travels around Tasmania.

For all of you gourmands, if you packed a pair of pants with an elastic waist, this might be the perfect day to donn them to tackle your ever expanding belly on this tour.

I also never leave home without my self-purifying water bottle – it comes on all of my international travels!

Where to Stay in Hobart for Your Tour to Bruny Island

Most Bruny Island tours will pick you up at your Hobart hotel if it’s within a 5km radius of Hobart’s CBD, so I recommend staying either in Hobart CBD, Salamanca / Waterfront area or the historical Battery Point (my favourite!) on your trip to Tasmania. If complimentary hotel pick up isn’t included, choose a hotel that is walkable to the Hobart Harbour docks.

Get a start at around 8AM from your Hobart accommodation to make the most of your day trip to Bruny Island from Hobart. Head south about 40 minutes to arrive at the Kettering Terminal for Bruny Island ferries.

A return ticket can be purchased on site and with the Bruny Island ferry cost coming in at $46 AUD for a typical-sized vehicle (including passengers). The crossing will take a scenic 20 minutes. Roads on Bruny Island (with the exclusive of the stretch toward Bruny Island Lighthouse) are super navigable and enjoyable to drive. I recommend fuelling up before you depart Hobart as Bruny Island only has one petrol station located in Adventure Bay.

Tasmania Travel Planning Guide

► is it safe to rent a car in tasmania.

Absolutely, it is safe to rent a car in Tasmania. In fact, renting a car in Tasmania is the best way to see and explore the island .

You can make a very scenic lap of Tasmania in 10 days with your own rental vehicle. Plus public transportation between major tourist hubs in Tasmania is relatively limited.

► What is the best way to book my Tasmania accommodation?

I always use booking.com for all of my accommodation worldwide, and Tasmania is no exception. I stayed in some really epic places on my adventure around the island.

For more cozy apartment-style accommodation try VRBO (better and safer than Airbnb).

► Can you drink tap water in Tasmania?

Heck yes! Tasmania has some of the cleanest tap water in the world . Outside of a few small rural areas where this might not be the case, I really enjoyed drinking straight from the tap in Tasmania.

If you plan to do a lot of hiking in Tasmania, I recommend bringing my favourite self-filtering water bottle with you, just in case.

► What are the best day tours in Tasmania?

Taking a day tour in and around Tasmania is a must when visiting the island.

I highly recommend (and have been on!) the Tasman Island Cruise , the gourmet Bruny Island day tour , the Tamar Valley wine tour and the Gordon River Cruise .

After an adventurous morning, it will be time to pull it back a gear as we head for lunch to either the Bruny Hotel, Cafe or winery (lunch at own cost). There are options to suit all budgets and dietary requirements. After lunch, unwind and relax as we sample some award winning local produce. Berries, chocolate fudge, cheese, beverages and oysters are all possibilities (time pending and at own cost)!

Here is your next Instagram shot! Arguably the most iconic and most recognised landmark on the island, the lookout at the Neck never fails to disappoint.

Walk up the 279 timber steps to be rewarded with breathtaking 360 degree views of the island. Alongside the spectacular views, keep an eye out in the dunes for some burrows, fairy penguins and mutton birds nest here!

Wildlife spotting

Keep on the lookout! Bruny Island is a haven for a variety of Tasmania's unique native wildlife. Perhaps the most special is the albino wallaby, a rare species that is thriving on the island.

Keep your cameras at the ready on our walks and when we take you to a secret spot that the illusive albino wallaby is known to visit. You never know your luck!

Walking tracks (active level)

Depending on the days forecast, the track we choose to take you on will vary. Rest assured that each track offers something unique to experience.

These walks vary in duration and require a moderate level of fitness.

Cape Bruny Light house

Located at the southern tip of the island, the convict built Cape Bruny Lighthouse is now the second oldest lighthouse tower in Australia (1836).

best bruny island tours from hobart

Also known as Lunawanna-allonah, Bruny Island is separated from mainland Tasmania by a deep green channel called the D’Entrecasteaux. Home to a small population of people who prefer to live on the wild side, Bruny is all about beaches, waves, forests and food.

We set off early from Hobart to beat the crowds, taking a scenic waterside drive and ferry crossing to arrive on the island.

First up? A section of the Cape Queen Elizabeth trail, an easy 2 hour return walk that delivers spectacular views from Mars Bluff of Miles Beach and Bruny Island Arch, a mind-boggling natural rock formation.

It’s onwards and upwards from there, quite literally, as we climb 279 stairs to reach the top of Truganini Lookout where you’ll be met with magnificent 360 degree views of The Neck; a thin sliver of land that connects North and South Bruny.

Learn about local history at Two Tree Point before relaxing for lunch at Adventure Bay, a sheltered stretch of white sand and blue waves, giant eucalyptus standing proud along the shore.

Spend the afternoon tasting your way around the island, sampling locally crafted goodies with stops at the Chocolate Factory, The Honey Pot, Bruny Island Cheese Co. and Get Shucked Oysters. The perfect day? We do say!
