From the lungs of the earth to the founding place of evolution, little Ecuador packs a big punch, exceeding expectations in nature-based sustainable travel. Leading the way as a global change-maker, Ecuador marries dense rainforests, untamed rivers and prehistoric volcanoes with community, culture and conservation.

It's worth noting that ecotourism and sustainable travel aren't exactly the same thing – ecotourism can be unsustainable. Sustainability refers to the broader concept of creating travel that is not environmentally or culturally damaging. Ecuador combines these two brilliantly; here's a list of some of our favorite sustainable ecotourism experiences.

The rise of ecotourism in Ecuador

Ecuador may be the smallest contender to make the list of the top ten most biodiverse countries, but that doesn’t stop it from inspiring and educating when it comes to ecotourism. Ecuadorian tourism entrepreneurs are leading the way regarding sustainable ecotourism, creating the awareness and attracting the financial support necessary to protect the environment around them. Rather than harvesting land, flora and fauna for short-term gain, many are employing sustainable models designed to generate revenue for generations to come.

Train rides through the Avenue of Volcanos

In an area punctuated with rolling hills, glacier-capped volcanoes and cloud-piercing mountains – all evidence of past tectonic activity – it’s hard to imagine a better backdrop for train travel. These types of trips, however, are usually costly and generally don’t put sustainability first. Tren Ecuador , on the other hand, prides themselves on “breaking with the traditional model of luxury train rides” to offer an affordable experience where everyone wins.

Departing from the old city center in Quito , the Tren de los Volcanes tour travels through the "Avenue of the Volcanoes," passing the iconic Pichincha and Cotopaxi volcanoes. The train makes a three stops along the way; including Cotopaxi National Park, where visitors disembark and take guided hikes through the temperate forests. At the final stop in Machachi, passengers enjoy a meal from Café del Tren, a locally owned and operated business working with Tren Ecuador via the company's  social responsibility program .

In addition to operating under the United Nations’ Global Code of Ethics for tourism , Tren Ecuador invites nearby communities to take a leading role in product innovation, which in turn results in several community-operated restaurants, artisanal markets, museums, lodges and indigenous dance group presentations along the tracks.

If you’re traveling on the Tren de los Volcanes tour, consider getting off at the last stop (Machachi) and taking a bus or taxi to Ba ñ os or Cotopaxi instead of going back to Quito and taking a bus the same way.

A man holds a bicycle and looks out over a green hill with a waterfall running in the middle.

Bicycle adventures in Ba ñ os

Located on the edge of the Amazon and in the middle of Ecuador's enchanting cloud forests, Ba ñ os is a mountain and freshwater adventure hub that immerses travelers in experiences that have low environmental impact.

White water rafting, mountain biking, zip lining, mountaintop swinging, relaxing in hot springs, kayaking, hiking – the list goes on. Most travelers don’t set aside enough time for it all, but if you want to make the most of Baños, prepare to get an early start and participate in more than one activity a day.

The best way to see the area's beautiful waterfalls is by biking the  Ruta de Cascadas (Route of the Waterfalls). It can get busy, so wake up early to catch the cascadas before the crowds. Several gondolas, hiking trails and boardwalks take you to the cloud forest-shrouded waterfalls. Bike rentals in Ba ños can vary in quality and condition; we recommend  Wonderful Ecuador  for rentals and cycling tours.

Sustainable Travel in the Galapagos

In a place that is wild, raw and always lives up to expectations set by film documentaries, the Galapagos National Park is a poster child for high standards of environmental protection. 97% of the volcanic archipelago has been protected since 1968 – people live on the other 3%. And while the number of visitors allowed per yacht tour license hasn’t changed in 25 years, the islands have seen an increase in the standard of service, boat efficiency, rules on marine pollution and the allocation of yachts per location. The National Park Authority identifies variables such as how much wildlife lives on each island and how close they are to pathways in order to determine how many people can be on each given pathway and at what time of day.

The number of visitors to the Galapagos grows every year, and the number of tour licenses (called ‘patents’)  issued has increased for day trips due to high demand and the addition of newly built budget hotels. While this region is a sustainable role model for others around the world, there's progress to be made. Visitors often book inexpensive experiences that frequently come at a cost to the environment; doing more research and spending a little more money results in a far better experience and goes a long way in conserving this pristine place.

Awarding-winning catamaran Yacht Anahí is built on a foundation of sustainability and employee empowerment. With a high employee retention in an industry notorious for turnover, this luxury catamaran boasts an exceptionally skilled crew, the most efficient vessel in the National Park (according to the National Park Authority) and a carbon offset program that takes funds from each passengers’ payment and allocates it to a project that removes invasive flora and fauna and plants native trees.

The same Ecuadorian family who runs Yacht Anahí runs  Ikala Hotel  on Santa Cruz Island; this hotel was the first to set a trend in addressing the ongoing sewage problem by installing a compost system along with green energy, local sourcing and eliminating plastics. Another green hotel outside of the main Puerto Ayora area that's also committed to the environment, reforestation and conservation is Pikaia Lodge . Should you be looking to book day trips, the staff at these resorts will point you in the right direction.

Mindful travel in the Amazon

Despite its impressive size, the world's largest rainforest is a fragile ecosystem where tourism development can sometimes have harmful effects. In addition, many of the Amazon's original residents have often been excluded from conversations about tourism development.  Yacuma Ecolodge  in Tena has been working to change all this. Prior to the founding of the lodge and its adjacent nature reserve, local indigenous groups would sell their land to oil companies in exchange for short-term financial stability; when Yacuma entered the area, it bought the surrounding land to preserve it from industrial interests and create ongoing employment opportunity for nearby communities.  Today, Yacuma employs knowledgeable local guides, serves locally sourced meals, powers the facilities using green energy, and perhaps best of all, maintains and protects the 274-hectare nature reserve that the locals and lodge call home.

Day hikes are especially notable for bird watching and identifying plant species, while guided night walks reveal a more active side of the Amazon replete with sightings of spiders, frogs and lizards. After a morning hike, cool off and tube down the Napo River or hang out in the riverside hammocks.

How to select sustainable operators

Sustainable travel can be broken down into a few key elements that all relate back to purpose and picking the right operators is an essential part of shifting tourism development patterns. When choosing a lodge or operator, pay attention to the connection between their values of community, culture and environment. The profits and benefits should go to the local communities, not corporations or chains. The environment should be protected and utilized as an educational asset, creating awareness and demand to keep it intact. And in Ecuador in particular, local indigenous culture should honored and preserved through realistic and stable employment opportunities. If  these three attributes align, you’ll have a purpose-driven, sustainable adventure to remember.

Ecotourism in Ecuador: Eco-friendly Travel Around the Country

  • February 19, 2021

Did you know that Ecuador was named the World’s Leading Green Destination by the World Travel Awards for six consecutive years between 2013 and 2018? Ecotourism in Ecuador is a growing industry, and travelers now have numerous options to choose from across the country’s diverse regions.

The idea behind ecotourism is that it functions to promote the wellbeing of local communities while protecting and preserving the environment through sustainable activities. It is an opportunity for the traveler to live and travel more consciously and experience the destination in a more profound and meaningful way.

Must-see Ecological Paradises: Our Staff Recommendations

If you want to explore ecotourism as part of your trip to Ecuador, you can take part in experiences or stay at any of several eco-lodges around the country. Before we get into some unique activities and experiences in the next section, here is a brief list of some lodges we recommend visiting, divided by region. As always, we recommend reading about them and exploring what they have to offer.

[ We recommend you check out this blog to learn about community-based tourism in Ecuador . ]

Sierra Region

The Secret Garden — Nestled in the hills adjacent to Cotopaxi volcano, the Secret Garden is a mesmerizing and genuinely impressive eco-tourism initiative. Activities here include day hikes, horseback riding, and even summiting Cotopaxi itself! Black Sheep Inn — Situated in the village of Chugchilán near the breathtaking Quilotoa crater, this ecolodge advocates a holistic approach to conservation by protecting the land, culture, environment, and community. They’re accomplishing this through self-sufficiency, thanks to composting toilets, alternative energy, permaculture-style gardening, and biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable products where applicable. Llullu Llama — The hike through the surrounding valleys near Quilotoa may take you through the tiny and charming town of Isinliví. Here, the cozy Llullu Llama welcomes visitors from all over the world. Their operation is quite similar to that of the Black Sheep Inn, in their implementation of composting toilets, alternative energy, permaculture-style gardening, and more.

Amazon Region

Tamandua Ecolodge — This ecolodge, comprised of a series of rustic natural cabins, sits inside a beautiful reserve. Its simplicity allows it to blend into the setting, providing travelers with the perfect distraction-free opportunity to connect with and appreciate the region’s flora and fauna. Keep in mind that the walk to the cabins is about 20 minutes from the road, making it a remote destination like few others. The people who manage this spot are also hosts of a remarkable animal rescue and rehabilitation program.  Kapawi Ecolodge — Deep in the Amazon Rainforest near the border with Peru, the Kapawi people have established one of Ecuador’s most interesting ecolodges. Guests arrive by traveling along the river, Río Pastaza, which straddles the provinces of Pastaza and Morona-Santiago . This experience is at once educational and culturally immersive. The lodge is entirely owned and operated by this small indigenous community . Huasquila Amazon Eco Lodge — In Cotundo, a small community just north of Tena, this inviting spot offers travelers the opportunity to relax and explore the Amazon Rainforest without having to leave their low-impact, environmentally-sound retreat within the Sumaco Biosphere Reserve. It is located about 3 hours by car from the capital city of Quito. Finca Heimatlos — At the edge of the Amazon Rainforest, in Pastaza Province, sits a fascinating ecolodge and sustainable farming project on 50 hectares of pristine land. Finca Heimatlos is a perfect spot from which to explore exciting trails and glimpse exciting wildlife. The farm component makes an effort to blend permaculture with regional, low environmental-impact farming practices

Coastal Region

Azuluna Ecolodge — The area known as Las Tunas in the Province of Manabí is host to some of the most stunning ocean views and beaches in Ecuador. Azuluna Ecolodge receives visitors from all over and is situated very close to the Machalilla National Park. Apart from its work to conserve and protect the environment, Azuluna also supports several fair-trade and community development projects in Las Tunas and nearby Ayampe. Umbrellabird Lodge — In the Buenaventura Reserve, just a short drive inland from the southern coast of Ecuador, the Umbrellabird Lodge provides a riveting experience for birders and conservation enthusiasts from all over the world. This spot is run by the Jocotoco Foundation, which employs some of the most thorough ecological practices around. They partner with the community to preserve this biologically diverse gem in a part of the country that the typical tourist does not often frequent.  Cabalonga EcoAdventure – In Puerto Cayo, home of some of Ecuador’s most beautiful beaches, Cabalonga EcoAdventure is dedicated to safeguarding the region’s incredible biodiversity. Guests of Cabalonga take part in memorable and awe-inspiring outdoor experiences that enlighten and help support local economies, like those of the artisan community and conservationists.

What to Consider Before Experiencing Ecotourism in Ecuador

Have you heard of the term “greenwashing”? It is used to describe hotels and businesses that appear eco-friendly, but are not. You’ll find that ecotourism in Ecuador may have very different applications and interpretations, depending on local standards.

If you wish to choose ecologically-sound establishments during your travels, make sure you thoroughly investigate the hotel or business before making a reservation. Visit their website, read TripAdvisor reviews and email them directly. Specifically, ask how the establishment supports the community and promotes low-impact tourism.

This is particularly important for your visit to more remote and pristine areas of Ecuador, like the Amazon Rainforest and Galápagos Islands.

Ecotourism Options Along the Pacific Coast of Ecuador

Compared to the Amazon, ecotourism establishments along Ecuador’s Pacific Coast are sparse, but here are a couple of spots worth visiting.

Río Muchacho Organic Farm and Ecolodge — Located near the seaside city of Canoa, this 10-hectare organic farm and ecolodge is an inspirational and relaxing place to visit. Apart from being completely self-sufficient, Río Muchacho offers courses on sustainable agriculture and permaculture to visitors and the local community.  Finca Sarita — This organic farm near the coastal town of Calceta also happens to produce some of the world’s most expensive chocolate. Owned by a local family that champions permaculture and organic farming techniques in the community, Finca Sarita is entirely self-sufficient and offers travelers accommodations and meals for just $15. The town of Calceta is known for its production of traditional pottery.

Cacao in Ecuador

Ecotourism Alternatives in Ecuador’s Amazon Jungle

Ecotourism in Ecuador’s Amazon is often merged with community-based tourism initiatives. Some of these are standalone operations, while others partner with high-end lodges. Here are a few we like to promote:

Sinchi Warmi – If you want to support a project owned and led by indigenous Kichwa women, come to Sinchi Warmi (which means “strong women” in the Kichwa language). This community tourism project is based near Misahualli (only 3-4 hours from Quito). It provides accommodations in attractive rustic cabins built around a small lake and features local dishes in their restaurant (they also have vegetarian options).  Campamento Kwakwiyo – Run by the Siekoya Remolino community near Lago Agrio, this camp sits on 17,000 hectares of protected rainforest close to the Colombian border. Visitors can stay with families or in a covered camping area. A unique activity here includes the ayahuasca ceremony, led by local and well-respected shamans. Other activities include day hikes, night walks, bird and wildlife watching, and canoe trips. Fundación Hola Vida – Near the Amazonian city of Puyo (4-5 hours from Quito), this community-led ecotourism initiative gives you access to 225 hectares of secondary rainforest where you can visit Hola Vida, a large waterfall. You can either hire a local guide to explore the area or go independently along clearly designated trails.

The “Leave No Trace” Principle

“Leave No Trace” is a widely known set of outdoor ethics principles developed in the United States that you can, and should, apply in Ecuador (and pretty much anywhere else you travel!). Leave No Trace was developed to promote environmental conservation by minimizing human impact. It consists of 7 principles, including:

  • Plan ahead and prepare
  • Travel and camp on firm ground
  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Leave what you find
  • Minimize campfire impacts
  • Respect wildlife
  • Be considerate of other visitors.

The idea is, after enjoying your time in the outdoors, you leave it as you found it (if not better!), and it’s always a good and considerate thing to do—to collect any trash you find along the way.

PREMIUM PROGRAM

4 days / 3 nights.

Departing from Quito, a 30-minute flight to Coca will bring you over the eastern Andes mountain range. After landing during the mid-morning, a 5-minute transfer will take you to “The community Anangu” Port, where you will embark on a comfortable covered motorboat. Here we will ride along the Napo River for about 2 hours while enjoying a box lunch and coffee, which is provided en route. Along the way, you will have opportunities to spot birds like herons, kingfishers, and others. After arriving at Napo Wildlife Center’s entry dock, we disembarked for a short break and to visit the restroom. Next, we take you on a majestic and peaceful 2-hour paddle canoe ride surrounded by trees and wildlife, paddling along a narrow creek that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. There will be chances to see some species of monkeys as well as large birds like toucans, parrots, or even macaws. A late afternoon arrival to Napo Wildlife Center with an overwhelming view of the Añangu Lake will be accompanied by a welcome drink followed by a briefing from the local manager.

Wake up for an early breakfast and an early start to reach the most accessible parrot clay licks in Ecuador, about 1 hour away from the lodge. Guests reach this destination just before parrot activity kicks off at the clay lick between 7:30 to 8:30 am to ensure the best viewing experience. A total of 11 species of parrots, parakeets, and macaws can be seen daily. Many other animals also visit on a less frequent basis. Later, hike along a forest trail to visit the Kichwa Community of Añangu and share time with a family on one of their many activities. Enjoy lunch at Napo Cultural Center, where you share with people of the Kichwa community. Then return to the creek and hike through a Terra Firme Forest for about 30 minutes until we arrive at the second parrot clay lick. If the weather conditions permit, we will be able to find different species of parrots, parakeets, and even macaws. When you arrive back at the lodge during the late afternoon or early evening, a delicious dinner will be awaiting you.

After another early breakfast, we leave the lodge to experience an amazing view of the rainforest from a 36 meter tall canopy tower, a great way to see the hustle and bustle of life above ground-level. This is the second tower at the Napo Wildlife Center, located about 30 minutes from the lodge deep within the Terra Firme forest. As you ascend the 12-floor tower, you pass through different levels of the forest and emerge at the top of a huge Ceiba tree. Flocks of colorful tanagers pass right through the canopy of the tree. Blue-and-yellow macaws fly past while, in nearby trees, adorable spider monkeys search for fruit. Two species of large toucans call in the early mornings and afternoons, and the life of the forest canopy is laid out before you. Birds that are virtually impossible to see from the forest floor far below are suddenly right beside you, usually oblivious to your presence. The canopy tower opens a whole new world to guests of the Napo Wildlife Center! Lunch is served at the lodge. Your afternoon can include discovering another Terra Firme trail, where we hike along primary forest to see the forest interior, possibilities of finding lizards, colorful manakins, or the unique and endemic Golden-mantled tamarin monkey. After the hike, explore the lake and creeks in a dugout canoe and enjoy a likely chance meeting with our local Giant otter family on the way.

Your last day will entail an early departure and final 2-hour excursion canoeing back to the Napo River. The creek may reveal new sights of giant otters, monk saki monkeys, and rare birds along the way. Once we have reached the river, you will transfer to the motorized canoe to return the way you came. You will arrive in Coca after an approximately 2-hour boat ride to check in for your Coca – Quito flight. Precise schedule to be announced according to departure details and arrangements.

EXTENDED STAY

5 days / 4 nights.

This morning we will take a short flight from Quito to the town of Coca, lasting about half an hour. A short drive from the airport to “La Mision”, the main port of Coca, will bring you to “the gateway to the Amazon” where Francisco de Orellana set sail in 1541. Our method of transportation will now be a comfortable covered canoe powered by twin outboard motors where we can enjoy a box lunch and coffee provided en route. This craft will take us downstream on the Napo River for about 2.5 hours to the Napo Wildlife Center (NWC) welcome station. Here we will take a short break and make use of the facilities before transferring to smaller canoes that are used instead of motorized vehicles to maintain the pristine landscape and habitats. Over the next couple of hours, we will paddle you up Añangu Creek to the NWC lodge, which is situated on the bank of a tranquil lake amid a vast tract of primary rainforest where hunting is prohibited. On this canoe ride, you have high chances of spotting wildlife! Various species of monkeys, as well as large birds like toucans, parrots, and even macaws, can be seen.

After a buffet breakfast, experience life above the forest floor by visiting the 36-meter canopy tower. This tower is located about 30 minutes from the lodge and deep within the forest. Get an excellent sample of the 600+ species of birds recorded so far, with a close look at colorful tanagers, macaws, toucans, flycatchers, and even spider or howler monkeys feeding themselves on the nearby trees. The canopy tower opens up a whole new and exciting world to the guests of the Napo Wildlife Center. Return to the lodge for a typical Ecuadorian lunch. After lunch, there are many options to choose from for your afternoon activity. Climb the central tower for birdwatching, go kayaking, or simply relax in your hammock if that’s more your speed. You may choose to hike through the marvelous Terra Firme forest to discover the ecology and the role of plants in the complex world of the Tropical Rain-Forest. Vines, ancient trees, bromeliads, and orchids stand out in this impressive natural garden. After the hike, explore the surrounding lake and creeks for the chance to run into a Giant otter family. A delicious dinner awaits for you in our lodge restaurant at 7:30 pm.

This morning we will visit the best parrot clay licks in Ecuador!! An early start will allow us to see different creatures while paddling downstream on the Añangu creek as far as the welcome area. Then, we take the motorboat for a 10 minute ride for a beautiful view of thousands of parrots such as the amazon-mealy, blue-headed, and orange –cheeked, among others who land at the natural river-side formation to eat some clay. Later, we return to the welcome area and start a short hike to the parakeets’ clay lick. Here hundreds of cobalt-winged parakeets remain crowded in the trees waiting for the most confident members of the flock to decide it’s the best time to get minerals from the clay. Marvel as they all take turns landing at this clay lick in a flurry of color and sound. Lunch at Napo Cultural Center. In the afternoon, visit the interpretation area to learn about the traditions of the ancestral Kichwa community of Añangu through song, dance, and conversation. Then head back to the lodge late in the afternoon. You will be welcomed back with a refreshing fruit drink, and dinner following at 7:30 pm.

This morning we will hike along the Tiputini trail. Enjoy the mixture of Terra-Firma and swamp forests while searching for more wildlife such as golden-mantled tamarins, white-faced capuchin monkeys, two and three-toed sloths, pigmy squirrels, and maybe even a carnivore’s tracks on the forest floor. We return to the lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest. In the afternoon, paddle canoes will take you deeper into areas of the surrounding creeks with more possibilities of seeing unique wildlife like the hoatzin. After dinner, we can all discuss and share our experiences of the community and Napo Wildlife Center.

Early breakfast and last excursion canoeing back to the Napo River. The creek may reveal new sights of giant otters, monk saki monkeys, black-capped donacobius, and other birds. The motorized canoe will take you back to Coca for the flight back to Quito.

SPECIAL PRICE

A 30 minute flight from Quito to Coca over the eastern Andes mountain range is the beginning of this fantastic experience. After landing, a short 5 minute drive will bring you to the Coca port where you will take a comfortable covered motorboat ride along the Napo River. Approximately 2 hours later, and after spotting some birds along the way, we arrive at Napo Wildlife Center’s first welcoming area which is complete with restroom facilities. After arriving at Napo Wildlife Center’s welcoming area, we will switch watercraft and take a magical and peaceful 2 hour dugout-canoe ride along a narrow creek where motorized vehicles are prohibited. The Añangu stream connects to the lake where the lodge is located. Along the way, we’ll see our first hoatzins and get a taste for the diversity of the region, with birds perhaps including rufescent tiger-heron, sungrebe, red-bellied macaw, and green-and-rufous kingfisher. We reach our final destination by arriving at the lodge in the late afternoon. Enjoy your first night at NWC lodge.

(The days can be extended as required by passengers) One or two mornings, we will visit the very sturdy canopy tower which offers privileged access to a world apart from the rest of the rainforest. Three full days or more will only scratch the surface of the full range of avifauna in western Amazonia. Get a feel for the complexity of precious habitats and microhabitats within easy reach of the lodge. Flocks of oropendolas, aracaris, tanagers, and euphonias roam the canopy in search of fruit. Spangled and plum-throated cotingas sing from the treetops while raptors perch on vantage points to dry off in the morning sun. White-browed purpletufts and crowned slaty flycatchers compete for insects, numerous parrots and macaws fly by or drop in if there is a fruiting tree nearby, and many other species wander past (and through!) the towering tree. Good forest trails offer access to another component of the avifauna with woodcreepers, antbirds, and tinamous are particularly well represented. We should be able to encounter the vocally striking screaming piha and the visually striking black-necked red cotinga. Keep your eyes peeled, cameras charged, and binoculars at the ready.

Several clay licks (or “saladeros”) exist on the NWC lands. Here we should see (and hear!) the spectacle of hundreds of parrots and parakeets coming in to eat clay. It’s a unique sight to see, and it never gets old! The river-edge forest, where we’ll visit the local community that built and expertly runs the lodge, is home to numerous other species such as turquoise and magpie tanagers, rufous-headed woodpeckers, and swallow-winged puffbirds. We’ll also enjoy numerous canoe rides around the lake by the lodge and along adjacent creeks, where the songs of silvered and plumbeous antbirds reverberate through the flooded forest. Birds we will be seeking here include the poorly known zigzag heron, a habitat specialist called the point-tailed palmcreeper, the orange-crested manakin, and the striking long-billed woodcreeper. Plenty of different species of monkeys and the impressive giant river otter are also highlights. And then there are islands in the Río Napo which, depending on their age, support a varied avifauna distinct from that found on the “mainland” only a few hundred yards away! Island specialties we hope to see include the black-and-white antbird, olive-spotted hummingbird, and at least three species of spinetails. Plus more “expected” river birds such as the capped heron, collared plover, and yellow-billed tern will surely make an appearance.

Today we will make the journey back along the Añangu stream and head back up the Napo River to Coca for the return flight to Quito.

Guayaquil,  south  of Portete de Tarqui Avenue, due to  crime .

  • The cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in the province of El Oro, due to  crime .
  • The cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in the province of Los Rios, due to  crime .
  • The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas, due to crime .

Esmeraldas city and all areas north of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to  crime .

Reconsider travel to:

  • Guayaquil  north  of Portete de Tarqui Avenue due to  crime .

El Oro province outside the cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas, due to  crime .

  • Los Rios province outside the cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo, due to  crime .
  • All areas south of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to  crime .
  • The provinces of Sucumbios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo due to  crime .

Country Summary: Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador. Violent crime, such as murder, assault, kidnapping, and armed robbery, is prevalent and widespread. The rate of violent crime is significantly higher in areas where transnational criminal organizations are concentrated.

Demonstrations occur frequently throughout the country, usually motivated by political and/or economic factors. Demonstrators routinely block local roads and major highways, often without prior notice which can lead to disruption in access to critical infrastructure.

Outside of Ecuador’s major towns and cities, much of the country’s territory is sparsely populated and isolated. Government assistance may be very limited and can lead to significant delays for assistance to U.S. citizens in remote areas.

Land Border Restrictions : All foreign citizens entering the country via land border crossings from Colombia or Peru are required to present an apostilled certificate showing a lack of criminal record. Further information is available on the Ministry of Tourism’s webpage and at Ecuador.Travel . All U.S. citizens planning to enter Ecuador via a land border should comply with this requirement. See Travel.State.Gov ’s Office of Authentications webpage and Criminal Records Check webpage for information on how to obtain a criminal record check and apostille from the United States. The U.S. Embassy and Consulate General in Ecuador cannot assist citizens crossing a land border in obtaining the required documentation.

Read the  country information page  for additional information on traveling to Ecuador.

If you decide to travel to Ecuador:

  • Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.
  • Follow the Department of State on  Facebook ,  Twitter , and  Instagram
  • Review the  Country Security Report  for Ecuador.
  • Prepare a contingency plan for emergency situations. Review the  Traveler’s Checklist .
  • Visit the CDC page for the latest  Travel Health Information  related to your travel.

Level 4: Do Not Travel

The cities of Huaquillas and Arenillas in the Province of El Oro, due to  crime .

The cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo in the province of Los Rios, due to  crime.

The canton of Duran, in the province of Guayas, due to crime.

Transnational criminal groups and local gangs regularly engage in violent criminal acts in these areas, including indiscriminate attacks without warning in public spaces. Violent crimes have included murder, targeted assassinations, armed robberies, bombings, kidnappings, and assaults, among others. Violence in these areas has steadily increased in frequency and brutality in recent months, posing an increased security risk to U.S. citizens. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling to these areas without prior authorization. As a result, the U.S. government is limited in its ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas.

Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Guayaquil  north  of Portete de Tarqui Avenue, due to  crime .

Los Rios province outside the cities of Quevedo, Quinsaloma, and Pueblo Viejo, due to  crime .

All areas south of Esmeraldas city in Esmeraldas province, due to  crime.

The provinces of Sucumbios, Manabi, Santa Elena, and Santo Domingo, due to  crime.

Transnational criminal groups and local gangs have sporadically engaged in violent criminal activity in these areas, with violence increasing in recent months. U.S. government personnel are directed to exercise extreme caution and maintain increased vigilance when traveling in and around these areas.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Contact the Embassy of Ecuador in Washington, DC, for the most current visa information.

If you are traveling for  business or tourism, you do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days  in any 12-month period. You can request an extension through provincial migration offices. Additional information is available on the  Ecuadorian Ministry of Interior website .

  • If you are planning a visit longer than 90 days, you must obtain a visa in advance.
  • The Ministry of Tourism provides general information for travelers on its  website .
  • You must carry identification, including proof of U.S. citizenship. Carry a photocopy of your passport (including the entry stamp and/or visa) with you at all times.
  • If your passport is lost or stolen while you are in Ecuador, you should obtain a police report and apply for a new passport at the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General. We also recommend obtaining an entry/exit report from an Ecuadorian immigration office before leaving the country. For further information, see the  Ecuadorian Ministry of Interior website .
  • U.S. citizens born in Ecuador are required to show an Ecuadorian passport or national ID card upon entering and exiting Ecuador.
  • U.S. citizen children born in Ecuador who are traveling without one or both parents must present a copy of a birth certificate and written authorization from the absent parent(s). If the parent is deceased, a notarized copy of the death certificate is required. For more information, contact the Embassy of Ecuador in Washington, DC.
  • While no specific vaccinations are required for entry, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) recommends travelers obtain certain immunizations. See the CDC  website  for more information.

The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Ecuador.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction , and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Exercise increased caution when traveling in Ecuador, and do not travel to the province of Carchi, the province of Sucumbíos, and the northern part of Esmeraldas province, including Esmeraldas city due to crime. U.S. government personnel may travel to the northern bank of the Napo River in Sucumbíos, where tourist lodges are located, an area approximately four miles wide, and to the portion of Esmeraldas province that is south of Esmeraldas city.

All other U.S. government travel to the northern border area is prohibited without prior permission. This region has a high rate of violent crime. U.S. citizens are not targeted, but have been victims of crime there in the past.

Crime:  Crime is a widespread problem in Ecuador.

  • Pick-pocketing, robbery, and hotel room theft are the most common crimes. Tourists have been robbed at gunpoint on beaches and along hiking trails. Passengers arriving at the Quito and Guayaquil airports have also been targets of armed robberies.
  • Use hotel safes if available, avoid wearing obviously expensive jewelry or clothing, and carry only the cash or credit cards that you need. Stay alert in crowds and on public transportation. Be aware that thieves might create distractions to target you.
  • Be alert for robberies, in which criminals enter a taxi and force victims to withdraw money from ATMs. Some victims have been beaten or raped. Avoid hailing taxis on the street. Order taxis by phone or use a service affiliated with major hotels. Avoid withdrawing large amounts of cash at one time. Use ATMs in well-protected indoor areas.
  • To avoid carjacking or theft from your car while you are stopped at intersections, drive with your doors locked and windows rolled up. Do not leave valuables in plain view.
  • Sexual assaults and rapes can occur, even in tourist areas. Travel in groups, do not leave food or drinks unattended, and never allow a stranger to give you a drink.
  • Do not let your credit card out of your sight in order to avoid credit card “skimming.”
  • Incapacitating drugs, such as rohypnol and scopolamine, have been used to facilitate violent robberies and sexual assaults.

Civil Unrest:  Demonstrations may occur occasionally. They may take place in response to local or international events or on politically significant holidays. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly become violent. Protesters may block roads and sometimes burn tires, throw rocks, and damage property.

  • Police may respond using water cannons and tear gas.
  • Avoid demonstrations and prepare back-up transportation plans. Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent with little or no warning.
  • A disaster can disrupt food supply, so plan to have at least a 3-day supply of food and medicine on hand.

Check local media for updates and traffic advisories.

International Financial Scams:  See the  Department of State  and the  FBI   pages for information.

Victims of Crime:  U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Embassy in Quito or Consulate in Guayaquil for assistance. Report crimes to the local police by calling 911 . In Quito, you can visit an  Ecuadorian Tourist Security Service Attention Center . You can also contact the U.S. Embassy at +593-2-398-5000 or the U.S. Consulate General in Guayaquil at +593-4-371-7000.

Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes.

See our webpage on help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

Information about victim’s assistance programs in Ecuador is available on the U.S.  Mission in Ecuador website .

  • help you find appropriate medical care
  • assist you in reporting a crime to the police
  • contact relatives or friends with your written consent
  • provide general information regarding the victim’s role during the local investigation and following its conclusion
  • provide a list of local attorneys
  • provide our information on  victim’s compensation programs in the United States.
  • provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution
  • help you find accommodation and arrange flights home
  • replace a stolen or lost passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Embassy or Consulate General for assistance.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more  information on insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.

  • Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking illegal drugs in Ecuador are severe. Offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
  • Never agree to carry a suitcase or package through customs for anyone.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see the State Department’s website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate General immediately. See our webpage  for further information.

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

Seismic Activity:  There are numerous active volcanoes, and earthquakes are common. Earthquakes can trigger deadly tsunamis. Visit  Ecuador’s National Risk Management Secretariat  and the  Ecuadorian Geophysical Institute  for more information.

  • Mud or lava flows from  Tungurahua volcano  could pose a significant and immediate threat to travelers in Baños.
  • The town of Latacunga is directly in the path of potential mud or lava flow from the  Cotopaxi volcano . Even small emissions from the volcano can trigger avalanches and landslides. Low lying areas in the greater Quito area could also be affected if Cotopaxi erupts.
  • Reventador volcano is located in Napo province and is one of the most active in the country.
  • Sangay volcano is located in Morona Santiago province is active and local authorities advise against approaching the volcano and nearby Upano river.
  • In the event of a natural disaster, pay attention to the news media for updates. A disaster can disrupt food supply, so plan to have at least a 3-day supply of food and medicine on hand.
  • See the  Centers for Disease Control website  for information on emergency preparedness and response.

Hallucinogens:  Traditional hallucinogens, often referred to as ayahuasca or San Pedro, are often marketed to tourists as “spiritual cleansing” and typically contain dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a strong hallucinogen that is illegal in the United States, Ecuador, and many other countries. Health risks are not well understood, and, on occasion, people suffer serious illness or death after taking these drugs. Intoxicated travelers also have been assaulted and robbed. These incidents often occur a great distance from medical facilities, making the risks even greater.

Galápagos   Islands: Be aware of the following challenges:

  • Many Ecuadorian tour vessels operating in the Galápagos do not meet international safety standards. Inquire about safety features when boarding vessels.
  • The two hospitals on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal Islands do not perform major medical procedures.
  • Serious injury or illness in the Galapagos typically requires medical evacuation to the Ecuadorian mainland or the United States. This can cost $60,000 or more and take significant time to arrange.  We strongly recommend you purchase travel insurance that includes health coverage and air evacuation .
  • There are limited decompression facilities for scuba divers.
  • The Ecuadorian government restricts the entry of certain items into the Galapagos. Visit the  Agency for Biosecurity and Quarantine Regulation and Control for the Galapagos  for more information.

Retiring in Ecuador:  In recent years, Ecuador has become a top overseas destination for retiring U.S. citizens.

  • U.S. citizens have reported unethical practices by lawyers, real estate agents, and others, resulting in costly losses and little hope of remedy through the local judicial system.
  • Ecuadorian rules governing visas and customs are subject to change with little notice.  The Ecuadorian government publishes little information in English. The U.S. Embassy and U.S. Consulate General cannot give detailed advice about Ecuadorian immigration law.

Faith-Based Travelers:  See our following webpages for details:

  • Faith-Based Travel Information
  • International Religious Freedom Report
  • Human Rights Report
  • Hajj Fact Sheet for Travelers
  • Best Practices for Volunteering Abroad

LGBTI Travelers:  There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTI events in Ecuador.

See   our  LGBTI Travel Information   page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:   Travelers with disabilities might have difficulty accessing buildings. Sidewalks in some areas are narrow and poorly maintained.

Students:  See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

For emergency services in Ecuador, dial 911.

Ambulance services are:

  • not present throughout the country and unreliable in most areas except Quito.
  • not equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Injured or seriously ill travelers may prefer to take a taxi or private vehicle to the nearest major hospital rather than wait for an ambulance, particularly outside of Quito.

Adequate medical and dental care is available in major cities. In smaller communities and in the Galapagos Islands, services are limited, and the quality is generally well below U.S. standards.

  • Ambulance service is limited.
  • Specialized medical care can cost tens of thousands of dollars or is not available.
  • Pharmacies are widely available. However, some medications might not be offered, and brand names will differ from products in the United States. Not all pharmacies purchase medications from pharmaceutical companies that adhere to quality control standards.
  • Exercise caution if you explore herbal and folk remedies.
  • Quito is 9,400 feet above sea level. Some other tourist destinations in the mountainous region may be higher. Consult your doctor for recommendations concerning medication and lifestyle tips at high altitude.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the government of Ecuador’s  National Customs Service  to ensure the medication is legal in Ecuador.

The following diseases are present:

  • Chagas disease
  • Chikungunya
  • Tuberculosis
  • Yellow fever

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further health information :

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality : Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Mission in Ecuador maintains a list of doctors and hospitals on its  webpage . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general :

  • Adequate health facilities are available in Quito and Guayaquil but health care in rural areas may be below U.S. standards.
  • Public medical clinics lack basic resources and supplies.
  • Hospitals and doctors often require payment “up front” prior to service or admission.
  • Private hospitals usually require advance payment or proof of adequate insurance before admitting a patient.
  • Medical staff may speak little or no English.

  Pharmaceuticals:

  • Exercise caution when purchasing medication overseas. Pharmaceuticals, both over the counter and requiring prescription in the United States, are often readily available for purchase with little controls. Counterfeit medication is common and may prove to be ineffective, the wrong strength, or contain dangerous ingredients. Medication should be purchased in consultation with a medical professional and from reputable establishments.
  • U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Food and Drug Administration are responsible for rules governing the transport of medication back to the United States. Medication purchased abroad must meet their requirements to be legally brought back into the United States. Medication should be for personal use and must be approved for usage in the United States. Visit the  U.S. Customs and Border Protection  and the  Food and Drug Administration  websites for more information.

Assisted Reproductive Technology and Surrogacy:

  • If you are considering traveling to Ecuador to have a child through use of assisted reproductive technology (ART) or surrogacy, see our  ART and Surrogacy Abroad page .
  • Surrogacy is legal for foreigners in Ecuador.

Water Quality:

  • In many areas, tap water is not potable. Bottled water and beverages are generally safe, although you should be aware that many restaurants and hotels serve tap water unless bottled water is specifically requested. Be aware that ice for drinks may be made using tap water.
  • Many cities in Ecuador, such as Quito, are at high altitude. Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness, and take precautions before you travel. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for more information about  Travel to High Altitudes .

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Some roads are poorly maintained and may lack crash barriers, guard rails, signs, and streetlights. Heavy fog and rain make conditions more treacherous.

  • Due to a lack of sidewalks, many roads are also used by pedestrians.
  • Slow-moving buses and trucks frequently stop in the middle of the road unexpectedly.
  • In rural areas, you may encounter livestock in the road.
  • Many vehicles are poorly maintained, and breakdowns are common.

Traffic Laws:

You may use your U.S. driver’s license for up to 90 days. If you are staying in Ecuador longer, you should contact the  National Transit Agency  to obtain a valid driver’s license.

  • Drivers often disobey traffic laws and signals. They rarely yield to pedestrians and cyclists.
  • If you are involved in an accident, even if you are not at fault, you may be taken into police custody,  especially if there are injuries or if you do not have insurance. If the injuries or damages are serious, you may face criminal charges.
  • You might encounter intoxicated drivers. Chances of a drunk-driving accident are higher on weekends and Ecuadorian holidays.
  • If you want to import a vehicle, contact  Ecuador’s National Customs Service  for local regulations. You must pay for local liability insurance, called SPPAT.

Public Transportation: Intra- and inter-city bus passengers are often targets of crime, including robbery and sexual assault.

  • Armed criminals have been known to board local city buses and rob passengers.
  • Numerous bus accidents occur every year in Ecuador. Many buses are overcrowded, poorly maintained, and lack safety features such as seat belts.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information. Visit the website of Ecuador's  national tourist office  and national authority responsible for road safety.

Aviation Safety Oversight:   The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of Ecuador’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Ecuador’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Ecuador should also check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

Ecotourism in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Ecuadorian Amazon Rain Forest Macaques

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial policies .

I don’t think I actually knew what “green” meant before I visited the Ecuadorian Amazon.

As we walked towards our jungle camp, the forest around us got thicker and thicker. New shades of green appeared around every bend in the path. The pale green of new leaves. The darker green of fallen leaves, trampled underfoot into a soft, spongy mattress.

The green rainbow of the forest canopy, reaching far above us and hiding the sun from view. It made us feel truly immersed in this wild, primal paradise.

Saying that we were excited was an understatement. Visiting the Amazon was a dream we’d both had since childhood. It was also one we both hoped to experience before it was too late.

Sadly, the Ecuadorian Amazon has been the site of several environmental disasters over the last century , from oil drilling and logging to slash ’n’ burn agriculture.

Each caused the destruction and/or pollution of large sections of forest, endangering the survival of the forest’s animals , plants and indigenous people.

Ecuadorian Amazon Rain Forest

Luckily, ecotourism has also arrived to this remote corner of the planet. Its growth is helping to preserve and protect the Ecuadorian Amazon ecosystem.

At the same time, it provides local communities with an alternative revenue stream. They no longer need to sell their natural resources to exploitative industries, allowing them to preserve their traditions without destroying their ancestral land.

There are dozens of reasons to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon. The main one, of course, is nature. The region has the world’s highest concentration of biological diversity.

There are countless nature-related activities available, including multi-day camping expeditions , excellent bird watching, and canopy walks.

Most importantly, supporting responsibly managed tourism helps local communities and makes a difference in preserving the precious Ecuadorian Amazon ecosystem. If this isn’t a win-win situation, I don’t know what is!

Wildlife in the Ecuadorian Amazon

The Ecuadorian Amazon may not be as large as Brazil, but in terms of in biodiversity it is second to none. Yasunì National Park is said to be home to the highest density of wildlife on the planet, including 150 species of amphibian and 121 of reptiles.

This amounts to a third of all Amazon amphibian and reptile species, even though Yasuni only covers 0.15% of the total Amazon Basin area.

Yasuni National Park contains 382 documented fish species (including three species of Piranha ) and more than 300 mammal species (including Monkeys, Pumas, Jaguars and several Bat species, one of which is endemic).

But the most common animals by far are insects. One acre of rainforest can be home to about 70,000 species of insects.

But no matter how skeevy these creepy crawlies may make you feel, it shouldn’t deter you from visiting this wonderful corner of the planet. If anything, it’s an added reason to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon !

The Ecuadorian Amazon at Night

Nighttime is the best time to go out with the hope of spotting wildlife. That’s when animals are at their most active.

Following our guide and the beam of his torch into the dark wilderness, we felt as if we were entering a mysterious world that’s called home by thousands of still-unknown species.

Hiking around the rainforest at night was actually the highlight of our visit. We spotted Tarantulas hiding under leaves, Scorpion Spiders slowly crawling up tree trunks and tiny poisonous frogs.

We even saw some Night Monkeys , which reminded us of the Lemurs in Madagascar with their large, hypnotic eyes.

We also went on a canoe trip along the river at night, where we had the chance to spot a Caiman resting on the rocks. We barely had time to snap a picture before it dove straight into the river.

However, what impressed us the most about the Ecuadorian Amazon at night was its remarkable sound. We imagined it would be eerily silent, but it was quite the opposite.

We heard whistles and whirrs, thumps, shrills and cries, moans and birdsong. Some found it creepy, but I thought it was comforting. In the rainforest, nature felt alive.

Birdwatching in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Another great reason to visit the Ecuadorian Amazon is the incredible bird watching opportunities you’ll find there. There are over 1600 bird species recorded, including iconic species such as Macaws, Toucans and Hummingbirds.

One of the area’s more peculiar bird is the Hoatzin, a strange creature resembling a turkey that is only found in the Amazon. The Hoatzin is a mystery to ornithologists. This is a bird with no known living relatives.

For a long time it was believed to descend from prehistoric birds, because of the claws on its wings.

Hoatzin are poor fliers and often hang around oxbow lakes, where they can easily be spotted. Some people call them “Punk-Rock birds” due to their colorful, Mohawk-like crests.

They’re also commonly referred to as “Stinkbirds” because of their smell. But, to be honest, I didn’t think that was so bad.

Other Activities in the Ecuadorian Amazon

One of the things that impressed me the most about the area was the rainforest canopy, which was so thick and dense that it felt like a real ceiling.

Sometimes it was hard to tell what time of day it was, or if it was sunny or cloudy. The canopy is home to lots of wildlife: Not just monkeys and birds, but also Puma and Jaguars, whose roars can sometimes be heard.

A canopy walk offers a great way to get close to this wonderful part of the forest and spot animals and plants that cannot be seen from the ground. Many lodges offer them, providing guests with a true bird’s-eye view of the forest.

Early in the morning you might even find yourself in the middle of a “monkey procession.” We witnessed hundreds of Capuchin monkeys making their way across the forest, jumping from branch to branch.

Another popular activity is a canoe trip through the flooded forest, which is possible during the wet season. Lodges are often only accessible by motorized canoe, but the noise of the engine tends to scare animals away.

A traditional canoe gives you a chance to move in total silence. This improves your chances to spot elusive wildlife like Spectacled Caiman, Giant Anacondas and Capybaras, the world’s largest rodent.

The People of the Rainforest

One of the highlights of our visit to the Ecuadorian Amazon was visiting a local village. There we learned about the culture of local indigenous communities and their struggle in balancing tradition and modernity.

The area around the Rio Napo tributary (where our lodge was located) is home to the Huaorani , a traditional hunter-gatherer tribe.

Traditionally, Huaorani people never wore clothes, and hunted in the forest using a blowpipe and poison darts.

The Huaorani lifestyle has been changing ever since their ancestral land was opened to outside investors and motorized canoes cut connection times to the nearest cities.

They started trading and buying manufactured goods, and many started working at nearby logging plants or oil drills.

READ MORE: Shaman Blessing and Amazon Village Life in Peru

Ecuador Amazon Rain Forest tree mushrooms

However, the Huaorani still rely heavily on the forest for survival. Their name for forest and world is the same, öm ë . The forest is, indeed, their world. Huaorani have been born, lived and died in the forest for centuries.

Even today, they know it deeply, and speak of it as if it were a sentient being. Their myths and legends are all set in the forest, and part of their belief system includes respect of all forms of life. Animals are never killed, except for food.

Due to their intimate knowledge of the forest, local Huaorani are often employed as naturalist guides. During our walks, our guide shared some of his secrets with us.

We learned about medicinal plants, plants used to clean one’s teeth, how to get water from the trunk of trees, and even the best leaves to use in lieu of toilet paper.

Nowadays, the traditional lifestyle of the Huaorani is in danger, as is the Ecuadorian Amazon itself. More and more mining and petrol concessions are given out each year. Young people see no future in the forest, and leave their land for the cities of Coca or Quito.

Soon their ancestral knowledge may survive only in ethnographic publications, and in the memory of elderly villagers.

Responsibly managed ecotourism offers their only chance of survival, preventing centuries of knowledge from vanishing under the axe that continues to fell acres of rainforest every day. -Margherita Ragg; photos by Nick Burns

Ecuador Ecotourism Destinations

Ecuador is the ideal Green Travel Destination

A big sign signals the entrance to the cascades where mild trek (1 hr) will lead you the awesome spot where you can catch a sight of butterflies, birds and jungle vegetation, and even take a well-deserved dip in the cascade. By the way, its quite cheap to get there and perfect for slef-organized excursions.

2. Baños and its awsome rivers

Ecuador Ecotourism Destinations: Baños

The small town of Baños de Agua Santa is located on hot spot in the Andean region of Ecuador. Famous Tungurahua Volcano gives birth to healing thermal baths and breed a fertile land. Typical tropical jungle weather rules with daily showers combined with sunlight, warmth, and moisture. Sounds promising, doesn’t it? Yasuní is also home to two indigenous nations each with deep cultural practices which bond to the land, the Kichwa and the Waorani. An amazing site to explore! Given that Yasuní is sucha delicate and virgin ecosystem, specialized Jungle Lodges arrange escorted tours to this location, which keeps tourism regulated.

5. El Cajas National Park

Ecuador Ecotourism Destinations: El Cajas

Breathtaking Cajas is actually easily accessed to, as the main highway from Cuenca to Guayaquil crosses right through the park. The vast wilderness of El Cajas encompasses a unique mix of biodiversity — from high-alpine páramo to cloud forest and humid wetland.  The name of the park comes from the Kichwa word cassa, meaning “gateway to the snowy mountains,” or simply caxa: “cold.” Sounds existing to explore, right?

6. San Rafael Waterfall

Perhaps one of the most iconic images of the Ecuadorian Rainforest, the San Rafael Cascade is a magnificent display of natural beauty and power. Located between the borders of Napo and Sucumbíos Province at only 25km from Tena  City. The cascade has a drop of over 150 meters, formed by the descent of the Coca River. A must see on your trip to the Ecuador Amazon.

7. Galapagos – Bartolome Island

Ecuador Ecotourism Destinations: Bartolome

Though not as accessible as other spots mentioned here, there is no doubt this small island is a perfect site for ecotourism. Actually, once in Galapagos, getting to Bartolomé Island is quite easy on a 2 hr. motor-yacht ride. This volcanic islet is much more than just a pretty picture of Galapagos, it is home to an amazing underwater world with penguins, marine turtles, white-tipped reef sharks, and other tropical fish. The bay is one of the most awesome places to go swimming in the archipelago.

8. El Coca and it surrounding Rinforests
