Miranda Hart: ‘My preshow rituals? A banana and a poo’

The comedian on getting permission to be silly from Eric Morecambe, meeting the Spice Girls and how Comic Relief brings people together

What made you get into comedy? It seems like a scripted setup when I reflect on it now. It was as clear as day to me, even though I can only have been eight or nine. I remember being told to “stop being silly”, as all good, tired family members will say at times to children, and it being a dagger to my heart. For surely that was a key part of life: to laugh and be silly. The next day I was watching Morecambe & Wise and lo and behold there were some grownups being silly. When Eric Morecambe looked down the camera and smiled, I felt he was my friend, and I knew that I had to get inside that television and play.

Can you recall your first gig? It was in my parents’ sitting room. My sister and I had learned some Victoria Wood sketches and I’d learned some Joyce Grenfell monologues. We hid behind the curtains until my parents and a few friends came in, and then burst out in all our glory. Just your standard Friday night for most teenagers …

Who did you look up to when you began in comedy? It’s strange to think how few women there were when I was starting out – though that was 25 years ago now. I keep forgetting I’ve just turned 50. French and Saunders and Victoria Wood were the vital heroines to look up to. And then Mel and Sue and Catherine Tate emerged and were around when I started gigging.

Can you recall a gig so bad, it’s now funny? I remember doing a sketch show that I found funny at the time. There were about 15 people in a 300-seater, and stony silence the entire way through. We didn’t know whether to just stop. I had to go into the audience for a sketch and sit on a man’s lap flirtatiously (I’m cringing thinking about it) and when I did, he just said: “No thanks”, and passed me on to someone else.

Best heckle? You’re not as tall in real life. You don’t know quite what to do with that.

Any preshow rituals? A banana and a poo.

There are increasing concerns about performers being priced out of the Edinburgh fringe. What do you recall from your time at the festival? I first went to the Edinburgh fringe in 1994 and did my last show there in 2005. It was a long road. And it was a huge pressure financially. I temped in offices all year to earn the money to put on a show each August. It felt like the only way to showcase to producers and agents. It was also an amazing way to hone your craft, as every year you were working up material for Edinburgh, but I think the financial burden is way too much when you want to concentrate on the creative side, and acts need much more support on every level. It’s sad when standups and comedy actors are burning out before they even get a break. And although it makes a good story now, sharing a room and indeed a bed in your late 20s with your fellow comedians – we had three in a bed one year – because you can’t afford a flat doesn’t feel like the greatest conditions.

You’re joining Richard Curtis for a Comic Relief event at Just for Laughs London festival. What are your fondest memories of the work you’ve done with Comic Relief? When you’ve wanted to get into comedy all your life, and watched your favourite comedians do weird and wonderful things for Comic Relief over the years, it’s quite a surreal moment when you find yourself supporting the charity as a comedian. So my fondest memory was my first moment for Comic Relief: playing a stage manager in an Absolutely Fabulous sketch with some Spice Girls. I was having a constant out of body experience.

I have always believed in the importance of laughter, and known since that day aged eight watching Eric Morecambe how healing it can be. So to have a charity that connects a nation through laughter, to remind us there are millions of people for whom joy is far off due to their desperate circumstances but that we can help them, well need I say more? I’m a bit misty-eyed just saying that …

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? The divine Deborah Frances-White once said in a workshop I did with her 500 years ago: “Don’t fear your obvious.” A joke or an idea can seem so obvious to you that you might fear it not worthy. But it’s only obvious to you – so it’s still unique.

What’s the worst advice you’ve ever been given? “It’s all very well being a bit funny, but you can’t make a living out of it.” Welcome to drama school in the 90s! Actually it ended up being the best advice, as I wanted to prove them wrong in their view that comedy was a lesser art.

Miranda Hart gives big update on future of series

Miranda Hart has denied reports that she’s written a fourth series of BBC comedy series.

Miranda Hart has squashed the rumors that a fourth season of her self-titled BBC comedy series is in the works. 

Earlier today, The Sun reported that Miranda Hart has already written the fourth season of Miranda and had said: “A lot of lovely people have kept on asking for the return of Miranda so here we are and I hope everyone likes it.”

Unfortunately, for anyone hoping to see more from the likes of Miranda, Gary (Tom Ellis), Stevie (Sarah Hadland) and Penny (Patricia Hodge), Miranda Hart has squashed all rumors over on Twitter.

Her post read: “It’s so lovely when some people get excited there might be more Miranda . Means a lot. But I’m afraid what was in papers today didn’t come from me. Nothing planned at this time.”

She also joked: “And yes Twitter I look forward to all the “thank God for that” etc! This just for the few that were excited. No need to tell me that you’re relieved.”

If you're unfamiliar with the show, Miranda is a semi-autobiographical sitcom that originally ran for three seasons from 2009 to 2013, with two further specials airing in 2014 and 2015. The series follows Miranda's everyday life and sees her getting dragged into countless awkward situations, especially when it comes to her love life.

Miranda lives above a joke shop which she runs with her best friend Steve (Sarah Hadland) and frequents a local restaurant where Gary ( Lucifer 's Tom Ellis)— aka the love of her life— works. She's also a constant source of disappointment to her mother, Penny (Patricia Hodge), who is constantly pushing her to find a "proper job" and a husband.

Miranda Hart later reunited with members of the cast for a 10th-anniversary celebration in 2019 at the London Palladium. This was aired in 2020 as Miranda: My Such Fun Celebration .

The Fox sitcom Call Me Kat is also based on the British series. Call Me Kat follows 39-year-old Kat (played by The Big Bang Theory 's Mayim Bialik) who decides to leave her job as a university professor behind to open a cat cafe in Louisville, Kentucky.

Miranda is currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer and on BritBox in the US.

Heart Extends Massive 2024 Reunion Tour with Shows in Nashville, L.A., N.Y.C. and More — See the Dates!

The rock legends will be setting out on tour along with Cheap Trick, BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening

After a five year hiatus, allow Heart to go "Crazy On You" with their thrilling live show and long-awaited return to the stage!

The rockers previously announced they were setting out on a massive tour in 2024 — marking their reunion and first run of live shows since 2019 — and, on Tuesday, Heart revealed they're expanding the dates. The group helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson will now continue their run, titled the Royal Flush Tour, across North America through the end of the year, along with an A-list slate of special guests.

While the "Barracuda" group's shows this year were originally set to kick off in late April and wrap up by September, they'll now be out on the road through the fall until mid-December.

Heart's 2024 tour kicks off on April 20 in Greenville, South Carolina, continues in the U.S. through May, before heading to Europe for a handful of dates in June and July. On July 30, they'll resume their North American leg in Columbus, Ohio, and then play through the rest of the summer and into the fall.

The newly announced dates begin on Sept. 26 in San Francisco and last until Dec. 15 in Las Vegas. Fans will be able to catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees at stadiums in major cities like Los Angeles, Houston, Nashville, New York City, Vancouver, San Diego and many others.

Throughout the Royal Flush Tour, the "Magic Man" band will be joined by fellow rock legends Cheap Trick, and select shows will also include support from BTO featuring Randy Bachman and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening, the project from the son of the English rock group's original drummer.

The Wilson sisters shared a statement in press release about the upcoming concerts.

"We’re so excited to announce more tour dates," Ann, 73, said. “The exceptional talent of the band — Ryan, Ryan, Paul, Tony and Sean — brings a whole new level of energy to Heart’s live performance."

Nancy, 70, added, "I am incredibly proud of the show that we have crafted and am looking forward to reconnecting with even more fans. We can’t wait to share our music with everyone and celebrate the big electric energy of a completely live on the spot rock show."

The Royal Flush Tour comes after the rock favorites celebrated their 50th anniversary last year.

It also marks their first time out on the road together since 2019, when the "Alone" group set out on their Love Alive Tour. At the time, the shows saw the Wilsons coming back together after the two experience a brief rift. (In 2016, Ann's husband,  Dean Wetter, assaulted Nancy's then-16-year-old sons  after they reportedly left a tour bus door open, which he pleaded guilty to two non-felony assault charges.)

Both Ann and Nancy also recently took time to record their own solo efforts: Ann with Fierce Bliss in 2022 and Nancy with You and Me in 2021.

The two hitmakers have both explained to PEOPLE in interviews that taking time apart only makes their work together in Heart stronger.

"[Taking time apart] allows us to bring stuff back to Heart that we didn't have before," Ann said in a 2022 interview . "We love each other. She and I really look forward to smooth sailing."

Meanwhile, Nancy shared in a 2021 conversation that it was "so amazing" to get back out on the road together on their 2019 tour. "I could see that the Heart fans really loved the big spectacle aspects of the show — even if Ann didn't love the bubble machine I had requested," she said. "But most of all we saw how much the Heart fans loved the Heart sisters reunited."

While the previously announced concerts are already on sale , tickets for the fall dates go on sale later this week. Ticket sales kick off with a presale for Citi cardmembers, which lasts from now until Thursday at 10 p.m. local time. The general on-sale will then follow on Friday at 10 a.m. local time.

This sweet gesture definitely earned Miranda some brownie points after she received some backlash last year for her on-stage behavior.

Lambert has just a handful of shows left in Las Vegas, so we'll be keeping a close eye for more heartfelt moments.

SPOILER ALERT: Do not read ahead if you have not watched Season 11, Episode 5 of “ The Masked Singer ,” “Group C Finals: Shower Anthems Night,” which aired April 3 on Fox.

After two weeks of being on “The Masked Singer” chopping block, Sisqó is finally gone-guh-gone-gone-gone.

Lizard was voted out after being one of the two lowest vote-getters in the two previous episodes. He managed to beat Billy Bush as Sir Lion and Joe Bastianich as Spaghetti & Meatballs, but this week the beat no longer went da na da na. 

That left Poodle Moth and Clock to battle it out for the Group C win via a “battle royale.” The duo sang “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. The winner was Clock, who secured a spot in the Season 11 finale as the Group C champion.

For Poodle Mom, Robin Thicke guessed it was Shania Twain. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg picked Mandy Moore. Ken Jeong said it was Brooke Shields. Rita Ora thought it was Sharon Stone.

But we don’t actually know who it is just yet. That’s because the panelists used the “Ding Dong Keep Them On” bell to save Poodle Mom from leaving. As a result, even though this episode was originally supposed to be a double elimination, Poodle Moth will move on to the finals as well.

Sisqó as Lizard joins Billy Bush (Sir Lion), Joe Bastianich (Spaghetti & Meatballs), Savannah Chrisley (Afghan Hound) and Kevin Hart (Book) as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” this season.

It was “Shower Themes Night,” which may explain why host Nick Cannon didn’t wear a shirt on the episode.

“The Masked Singer” Season 11 features themed episodes including “The Wizard of Oz,” in celebration of the 85th anniversary of the classic film; “Transformers” (marking the brand’s 40th anniversary) and music tributes including “Billy Joel Night” and “Queen Night.” Additional themes include “Girl Groups,” “Soundtrack of My Life,” “TV Theme Night” and “Shower Anthems.”

With sixteen total celebrity singers, including three “wildcards,” Season 11 features new costumes including “Gumball,” “Lizard,” “Ugly Sweater,” “Goldfish,” “Starfish,” “Book,” “Gumball,” “Miss Cleocatra,” “Afghan Hound,” “Beets,” “Poodle Moth,” “Clock,” “Spaghetti & Meatballs,” “Lizard” and “Sir Lion.” According to the show, the Season 11 contestants boast a combined 22 Grammy nominations, 11 platinum albums, 33 Teen Choice nominations, 108 million records sold, 326 film appearances and 1.7 billion Spotify streams.
