What Alaska Railroad route is the most scenic?

The entire Alaska Railroad from Seward to Fairbanks is scenic. The track covers 470 miles of Alaska, from the mountainous Kenai Peninsula, to the sweeping tundra of the Interior. But, because it passes through diverse landscapes that can only be seen by train, the stretch from Anchorage to Seward is perhaps the most scenic of all.

The Coastal Classic

The route is run by the Coastal Classic train. It covers about 114 miles on a journey just over four hours long. When departing from Anchorage, for the first hour the train winds along the coast of Turnagain Arm. The arm stretches to the opposite shores of the Cook Inlet and sees one of the world's highest tidal swings. It's possible to see bald eagles fishing in the tidal flats, Dall sheep on the rocky cliff coastline, and even beluga whales in the water.

At the end of the Turnagain, the train separates from the highway and enters a remote section of track. It heads through the Placer River Valley, past the striking ice wall of Bartlett Glacier, and over the 1,063-foot Grandview Pass. This area is great for views of alpine meadows, rivers, and waterfalls. Last, but certainly not least, is the town of Seward, which is nestled on the shores of the Resurrection Bay, and surrounded by Kenai Fjords National Park and the Chugach National Forest. The Coastal Classic heading from Seward to Anchorage follows the same stunning route in reverse.

How Best to Enjoy the Coastal Classic Route

To make the most of this scenic route, it's important to know your options for reserved seating. The Coastal Classic offers two classes of service, Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome. Adventure Class is a standard train service with reserved seating in the first level. This class offers picturesque views through large picture windows. These cars are roomy, with high ceilings and spacious overhead racks to accommodate carry-on luggage. There are also large windows and tables in the Wilderness Café, the train's snack car. The most important Adventure Class perk is the shared observation car. These are partial dome cars that offer an even better view of the scenery along the train route. Adventure Class passengers are asked to rotate seats, limiting their use to 20 minutes at a time, but often these cars are not busy.

The GoldStar Dome includes reserved seats on the upper level of the train under an all-glass dome roof. Passengers have panoramic views from their seats, all of which face forward, recline, and have fold-down tray tables. Better yet, this service offers a second-level outdoor viewing platform for the exclusive use of GoldStar passengers. Included in the ticket price are meals, two adult beverages, and unlimited non-alcoholic beverages. GoldStar passengers have priority seating in the full-service dining area on the lower level.

It's important to note that the Coastal Classic train is wheelchair accessible. This includes the GoldStar Dome service, which has elevator access. Each car service also provides onboard host guides who narrate and call out upcoming views throughout the route.

Most Scenic Train Route

Most Scenic Alaska Railroad Trips

Most people that have traveled the entire Alaska Railroad system would likely agree that either the Denali Star route between Anchorage and Denali or the Coastal Classic Route between Anchorage and Seward is the most scenic.

On a clear day, it hard to top the views of Mt. Denali from the train. At 20,322 feet Mt. Denali is the tallest peak in North America and the train offers a number of unobstructed views as it passes within 50 miles of the summit. Some of the best views are just north and south of Talkeetna across the Susitna River. Of course there is lots to see on the Denali Star route in addition to Mt. Denali. Just north of Anchorage is a beautiful section where the train follows the Chugach Mountains then turns and crosses the Knik and Matanuska Rivers… heading north towards the Talkeetna Mountains and into the Matanuska Valley. North of Talkeetna the train crosses over the 918-foot Hurricane Gulch trestle, towering 296 feet above the creek below and allowing breathtaking photo opportunities. Before arriving at Denali Park you pass through Broad Pass, the highest point on the Alaska Railroad at 2,363 feet, featuring impressive panoramic views of the Alaska Range.

The Coastal Classic route between Anchorage and Seward is a favorite of many local Alaskans, and tends to be a great bet even if when the weather is less than optimal. Much of the first hour south of Anchorage hugs the coastline along the Turnagain Arm where there are great views of the train as it rounds several scenic points. Dall sheep can often be seen on the rocky cliffs above and passengers are also frequently treated to a unique phenomenon known as a bore tide. South of Portage the train separates from the highway and enters a truly remote and rugged section of track. You will head through the Placer River Valley, right past the impressive ice wall of Spencer Glacier and over the 1,063 foot pass of the Kenai Mountains… appropriately named Grandview. Another great bonus to the Coastal Classic route is just the fact that you are going to Seward. A day cruise from Seward to Kenai Fjords National Park is an absolute must see Alaska experience.

So which route is the best? You will have to decide which is right for you, and by all means, give us a call and we can offer some additional guidance. Don’t be surprised when we try to talk you into going to both Denali Park and Seward… it can be done in less time than you think… here is a 5 night itinerary.

Fly into Anchorage and spend the night. Head south to Seward on the train and take a Kenai Fjords National Park cruise. The next morning take the Park Connection Motorcoach from Seward to Talkeetna for one night. The next day enjoy a scenic flight to Mt. Denali with a glacier landing before catching the bus to Denali Park . Two nights in Denali will give you time for the full day park tour plus an optional tour like rafting or a dinner theater. Finally, take the train from Denali back to Anchorage… if you book the McKinley Explorer you may even have time to fly home that night. Of course this trip can be reversed, as well as modified to meet up with a Seward or Whittier cruise ship… and would be much more relaxed if you took a full week.

Remember, we can also help with lodging, tour or the whole vacation package… just give us a call at 800.266.8625.

6 Spectacular Scenic Train Trips in Alaska

Leave the cruise ship to see denali and less-traveled areas of this gorgeous state.

White Pass & Yukon train trip

Larry Bleiberg,

With towering mountain ranges, thousands of miles of coastline and immense wilderness, it’s hard for a visitor to experience the full scope of Alaska’s beauty — unless you take the train.

The  Alaska Railroad  (800-544-0552) links the state’s largest cities and offers a lifeline to remote settlements far from any road. With several routes and train cars designed for sightseeing, it’s also a perfect way to view Alaska from the ground up.

The rail line organizes an array of touring options, including train-plane travel packages, rafting excursions and guided hikes. It also rightfully boasts about its GoldStar package, an upgraded passenger service that includes meals in a dining car, an outdoor viewing platform and glass-topped rail cars designed for taking in soaring mountain views. (Note that the Alaska Railroad’s wheelchair lifts are available only in Anchorage, Wasilla and Talkeetna.) Also consider the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad, which is separate from the Alaska Railroad and often listed among the world’s most scenic rail lines. One of its routes, described below, takes you from the historic town of Skagway and along the path of gold rush prospectors, deep into the Yukon.

If you’re visiting by cruise ship , your line may offer one or more of these train trips as an optional excursion.

Here are some top trips to consider.

Denali Alaska railroad route

Denali Star

Route: Anchorage to Fairbanks

The backbone of the Alaska Railroad, this  route  connects the state’s two biggest cities and provides a spectacular way to visit  Denali National Park . While travelers can make the 356-mile, 12-hour trip in a day, many like to break it up with overnights in the funky town of Talkeetna or at the entrance to Denali. It’s possible to connect with park buses that head into the wilderness home of Alaska’s big four: grizzlies, moose, caribou and Dall sheep.

But there’s wonderful sightseeing from the train itself, including views of towering Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. (Tip: The best mountain views come at mileposts 224.3 and 279.) The journey takes you through deep canyons, skirts wild rivers and crosses the towering 296-foot-tall Hurricane Gulch rail trestle. Though you may pass the occasional wilderness cabin, you’ll be snaking deep into unspoiled (besides the train tracks!) nature.

Details:  Trips available from May 11 to Sept. 18, 2022. Adult one-way tickets are $259; $473 for GoldStar service, which includes seated breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and access to a two-story, glass-domed car and outdoor viewing platform.

Hurricane rail road trip

Hurricane Turn Train

Route: Talkeetna to Hurricane Gulch in summer; Anchorage to Hurricane Gulch in winter

The unique  Hurricane Turn Train  is one of the few on the continent to offer flag-stop service. It operates like a sort of backcountry city bus, letting hunters, hikers and adventurers leave or join the train anywhere along the wilderness route, as it climbs from Talkeetna north through the Indian River Valley.

AARP® Dental Insurance Plan administered by Delta Dental Insurance Company

Dental insurance plans for members and their families

Route highlights include views of Denali and the turnaround at Hurricane Gulch Bridge, the longest span on the Alaska Railroad. During the summer, many passengers depart at Curry for a walking tour of the historic resort community and a jet boat ride back to Talkeetna on the Susitna River.

While the train has several stops along its 55-mile route, its main appeal is the authentic Alaska camaraderie; you’re likely to meet locals and visitors heading off the grid. Although there’s no food service, Talkeetna restaurants and its general store will provide to-go meals for dining on board.

Details : In the summer, the Hurricane operates Thursday through Monday. Round-trip adult tickets are $114. (For pricing on the Curry train-jet boat excursion, check the railroad’s  site .) The Winter Hurricane operates on the first Thursday of the month October through May. Round-trip tickets are $135 for adults; $68 for adults 65 and older.

Coastal Classic road trip

Coastal Classic Train

Route: Anchorage to Seward

With glaciers, rugged coastline and mountain lakes, this 228-mile round-trip excursion on the  Coastal Classic  takes advantage of Alaska’s long summer days to cover some of the state’s prettiest territory. The blue and yellow Alaska Railroad train glides out of downtown Anchorage at 6:45 a.m., passing through a wildlife refuge and along the Turnagain Arm between the Chugach Mountains and the sea. Along the way it offers views of waterfalls, historic rail trestles and remote emerald lakes, stopping in the town of Girdwood and then heading through Kenai Fjords National Park. Riders arrive at the rugged fishing town of Seward on Resurrection Bay just after 11 a.m. for a seven-hour layover that can include tours, lunch at a remote island lodge, or a dog-sled ride and visit to husky kennels. There’s also a chance to browse shops and galleries, and visit the outstanding Alaska SeaLife Center aquarium. The return trip leaves at 6 p.m., arriving back in Anchorage just after 10.

Details:  Service from May 7 to Sept. 18, 2022. Adult round-trip tickets during high season (June 1-Aug. 31) are $197; $393 for GoldStar service, which includes seated breakfast and dinner, drinks and access to a two-story, glass-domed car and outdoor viewing platform. For shoulder or “value” season (May 7-31 and Sept. 1-18) fares drop to $173, $347 for GoldStar service.

Aurora train trip

Aurora Winter Train

Take in snow-blanketed Alaska scenery from the cozy comfort of a rail car on the  Aurora Winter Train . This seasonal service offers a chance to escape the crowds and enjoy the tranquil landscape on an 11.5-hour trip.

The train makes whistle stops for backcountry adventure seekers and others heading to remote cabins and campsites along a 50-mile stretch south of Hurricane Gulch, offering the possibility of a Denali view. Many travelers also come aboard to reach unique festivals like Talkeetna’s Bachelor Auction and its Wilderness Woman competition. Another popular option: overnighting in Talkeetna to take a pie-baking class at its famous roadhouse.

And while there’s no guarantee that you’ll see the spectacular (and unpredictable) northern lights, many winter visitors are able to catch the wondrous show.

Details:  The train runs on a limited schedule, leaving Anchorage on Saturday and returning from Fairbanks on Sunday, along with select midweek departures in December, February and March. Adult round-trip tickets are $446; $224 for adults 65 and older. Other popular options include a train-air package, which includes rail service from Anchorage to Fairbanks and a flight back. During value season (April 2-May 8, 2022) tickets are $426; $214 for adults 65 and older. Last year, fall value season ran from Sept. 18 to Nov. 21; this year’s dates and fares are yet to be announced.

Glacier Discover train trip

Glacier Discovery Train

Route: Anchorage to Grandview

Consider this  train  your shuttle to adventure, as it makes stops in several tiny towns with exciting touring options for day-trippers (and those staying longer).

For example, after leaving Anchorage at 9:45 a.m., this train visits the town of Portage. Disembark there to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, where you can see black and brown bears, moose, caribou and wood bison. Or stay onboard for a trip through a mountain tunnel to the town of Whittier, which serves as the gateway to Prince William Sound. Here you can catch glacier and wildlife day cruises, and make connections to Alaska Marine Highway System ferries and cruise ships.

The train then backtracks to pick up passengers who stopped in Portage, and makes a whistle stop at Spencer Glacier, where the U.S. Forest Service offers a free ranger-led hike in Chugach National Forest. (You also can book rafting or even ice-climbing tours from here.) Finally, it heads through mountain tunnels to Grandview, offering vistas of mountains, meadows and glaciers. Then it turns around and does everything in reverse on the way back to Anchorage, where it arrives at 9:15 p.m.

Details:  The full route runs June 4-Sept. 11, 2022; you can ride part of the route, to Whittier, starting May 14, 2022. Adult round-trip tickets are $152.

White Pass & Yukon train trip

White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad

Route: Skagway to White Pass Summit

One of the world’s most spectacular train rides, a day trip from the Gold Rush town of Skagway, takes passengers along a well-worn path. The narrow-gauge rail line opened in 1898 to haul prospectors to the Klondike gold rush, climbing nearly 3,000 feet in 20 miles. For decades, it served as the primary route to the Yukon, hauling freight and supplies to mining camps and settlements. Today the route, with tunnels and high trestles, is still considered an engineering marvel.

Now it operates as a heritage railway, with distinctive green and yellow engines pulling trains full of cruise ship passengers and other visitors into the wilderness. It passes waterfalls and deep gulches, and offers sweeping views of mountaintops and glaciers. The most popular outing, a 40-mile round-trip White Pass  summit excursion , lasts about two and a half hours.

You can also choose from a range of daylong trips, some including the chance to hike or to bike down the mountain pass.

Details: Adult tickets for the summit excursion begin at $134 round-trip. Reserve at  wpyr.com  or call 800-343-7373.

Can You See Alaska By Train?

The Alaska Railroad is a railroad that operates freight and passenger trains, offering train trips through Alaska for tourists and locals alike. The railroad’s main line stretches 470 miles from Seward to Fairbanks and connects communities all along Southcentral and Interior Alaska. It passes through Anchorage and Denali National Park, offering visitors train rides through Alaska before disembarking at the park for the adventure of a lifetime.

So many travelers want to see Alaska by train that the railroad carries more than 400,000 passengers annually! Here are five fun facts about the Alaska Railroad that train lovers should know:

  • The Alaska Railroad was built in 1896, to connect Fairbanks to the state’s Interior region during the Gold Rush.
  • The Alaska Railroad has 656 miles of track.
  • The Alaska Railroad has 1,381 freight cars, 45 passenger cars, and 57 locomotives.
  • The Alaska Railroad offers two classes of service – Adventure Class (which is comfortable, but still economy) and GoldStar Service (which offers luxurious, glass-domed roofs and gourmet meals).

Whether you are taking a day trip or have booked a multi-day, railroad package filled with adventure, train trips in Alaska are a convenient, sustainable way to travel around the state. Here are some of the cities (and lesser-known stops) you can visit if you ride the Alaska Railroad!

  • Anchorage – travel to Alaska’s largest city on the Coastal Classic Train, Denali Star Train, Glacier Discovery Train, Hurricane Turn Train (winter only), or the Aurora Winter Train. • Denali National Park – more than 17 percent of visitors to Denali National Park arrive by the Denali Star Train! Hop aboard to see North America’s tallest peak, as well as a healthy population of grizzly bears, moose, caribou, wolves, and more.
  • Fairbanks – step into the past on this train ride through Alaska, to a vibrant gold rush town. Ride the Denali Star Train or Aurora Winter Train to the railroad’s northernmost destination for a chance to learn more about the state’s vibrant history.
  • Girdwood – this train trip in Alaska takes you to a year-round resort town, which is home to a world-class ski resort and brimming with gorgeous mountain views of glaciers. For a true adventure, arrive by the Costal Classic Train or the Glacier Discovery Train.
  • Hurricane Flagstop Area – While many of the Alaska Railroad lines deliver tourists to vacation destinations, the Hurricane Turn Train and the Aurora Winter Train stops at this roadless backcountry area north of Talkeetna. Alaskans living off the grid use this stop to travel to nearby towns to resupply throughout the year.
  • Portage – take a train ride through Alaska on the Glacier Discover Train to Portage, where you will find a wildlife conservation center to explore. This is the last stop in “civilization” before the route veers into Alaska’s vast backcountry.

  • Talkeetna – this quirky little village is a great place to visit for its art and café scene as well as its views of Denali. You can reach Talkeetna on the Denali Star Train, the Hurricane Turn Train, or the Aurora Winter Train.
  • Whittier – travel from the northern region of Alaska to the tiny port town of Whittier, which serves as the jumping-off point for Prince William Sound. On this train ride through Alaska , you’ll see everything from mountains to the wild backcountry to massive glaciers.

From thick blankets of snow coating pristine landscapes and dark nights with dazzling displays of the Aurora Borealis, seeing Alaska by train in the winter is truly magical. Two trains operate during the winter months: The Aurora Winter Train, which travels from Anchorage to Fairbanks, and the Winter Hurricane Turn Train, which connects people in the wilderness area north of Talkeetna with more populated towns and services.

7 Gorgeous Train Trips You Can Only Experience From Anchorage

scenic train trips alaska

  • Destinations
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Anchorage makes the perfect base to explore Alaska by train. Anchorage is the largest metropolitan city in Alaska. It’s full of casual to fine dining options, plenty of cultural attractions, and ample outdoor activities. The city offers a large variety of accommodations, including boutique hotels, larger hotel chains, and private home rentals. Anchorage is also one of the easiest locations to get to in Alaska and serves as the ideal transportation hub for exploring the rest of the state.

The Alaska Railroad operates year-round passenger service connecting Anchorage to coastal cities and the interior of Alaska. Many of these trips are perfect for memorable, scenic day trips from Anchorage . The summer train schedules offer trips to Whittier and Seward with a variety of options to explore Alaska’s pristine glaciers. Outdoor adventure lovers can head to Talkeetna, a charming small town and a gateway city to flightseeing, mountain biking, hiking, rafting, camping, and fishing.

Start your journey from the Anchorage Depot, which was built in 1942 and renovated in 1948. This building is a Beaux-Arts classic and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is at the center of the Alaska Railroad system and its location makes it an easy walking distance or short car/shuttle ride from many downtown hotels .

All these trips can be booked directly through the Alaska Railroad and you can also book packages with excursions. Most trips start in the morning and return to Anchorage in the late evening.

Thank you to Visit Anchorage, Alaska for hosting me on a Press Trip.

Scenic route along Seward Highway from Alaska Railroad

Head Southbound On The Glacier Discovery Train

This train offers daily summer trips with multiple stops for a variety of adventures along the route. The route begins in Anchorage and heads southwest, featuring continuous stops before reaching Grandview, a picturesque area only accessible by train. The stretch after the Spencer Glacier stop is considered the most scenic, with an opportunity for views of Bartlett Glacier and Trail Glacier before winding through the Placer River Valley and alpine meadows, finally rolling into Grandview.

The following are all stops on the Glacier Discovery Train.

Alaska Railroad bends around the Turnagain Arm

1. Train Trip From Anchorage To Whittier

I took the Glacier Discovery Train south to Whittier which took close to 2 hours. The views were incredible along the way with the Chugach Mountains on one side and Turnagain Arm on the other. One of the most interesting portions of the trip was the one-way tunnel used by both cars and trains rotating through. After you go through the 2.5-mile tunnel, you pop out to views of Prince William Sound.

Glacier on the 26 Glacier Cruise

From the Whittier Depot, it is just a short walk across the street to the marina where I boarded one of Phillips Cruises and Tours’ high-speed catamarans, the 26 Glacier Cruise . You actually view 26 glaciers on this cruise, and we even saw one calving . Tons of ice plunging into the water was something I will never forget. The cruise lasts about 5 hours and includes one of the best lunches I have had on a day trip. I saw plenty of wildlife including a group of Dall’s porpoises that frolicked around the boat. Viewing a kittiwake bird rookery, with more than 10,000 birds nestled on the rocky cliffs and waterfalls roaring into Passage Canal, was an incredible experience.

The cruise finishes up just in time to catch the Glacier Discovery Train back to Anchorage, arriving just before 10 p.m.

2. Train Trip From Anchorage To Girdwood

Both the Glacier Discovery Train and the Coastal Classic Train make stops in the town of Girdwood. From the train depot, you can catch the free local bus to the Alyeska Resort . You can do this as a day trip, but I recommend you spend the night in Girdwood. There is so much to see and do.

Tram at Alyeska Resort

Start with a ride on the Alyeska Aerial Tram to the top of Mount Alyeska. I stepped out onto the observation deck for stunning panoramic views of seven “hanging” glaciers, the Turnagain Arm, and the Chugach Mountain range. There is a variety of hikes and, if you are adventurous, you can take the trail back to the resort. Keep an eye out for bear and moose sightings.

Back at the resort, check out the new opulent Nordic spa with hot and cold pools and a variety of beauty and wellness treatments. For the ultimate in fine-dining, book a reservation at the Seven Glaciers restaurant, which includes a tram ride to the top of Mount Alyeska. For a unique experience, take a summer glacier dog sled tour . Find more options for Girdwood activities here .

Glacier Discovery Train - Turnagain Arm

3. Train Trip From Anchorage To Spencer Glacier

The Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop was developed through a partnership with the Chugach National Forest and the Alaska Railroad. This remote wilderness area is only accessible by train. At the station, services are limited to a covered shelter and restrooms. It is named for Spencer Glacier — a massive wall of ice that cascades down the mountains to Spencer Lake. It is one of the most visible glaciers on the Railbelt.

Rafting near Spencer Glacier

There is a 1.3-mile trail to the Spencer Glacier Overlook at the edge of Spencer Lake. You can explore on your own or book a variety of guided excursions through the Alaska Railroad. Options include guided hikes, rowing up to the Spencer Glacier icebergs before floating down the Placer River, plus many more. Most people make it a day trip, but camping is available as well as a public-use cabin (reservations required).

Coastal Brown Bear at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

4. Train Trip From Anchorage To Portage

The Portage stop is where you can catch a shuttle to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center . This is one of my favorite activities on the trip. What an incredible experience seeing all these animals in enclosures designed to resemble their natural habitats. There is a boardwalk through the bear habitat with black bears on one side and the coastal or brown bears on the other. The coastal bears are even larger than grizzly bears and I was very glad to be behind a fence. The property is beautiful and there are areas where you will have 360-degree views of mountains. There is a nice outdoor space with a food truck and grab-and-go market.

Pro Tip: Make sure to check out the gift shop where savvy locals purchase gifts. There is such a great selection, and it helps to support the conservation center.

Views from the Coastal Classic Glacier Train

Take In Picturesque Views From The Coastal Classic Train

5. train trip from anchorage to seward along the coastal route .

The Coastal Classic Train departs the Anchorage Depot and follows the Cook Inlet along the coast. This scenic route travels past Potter Marsh , part of the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. You can see the boardwalks that traverse the wetlands. Keep an eye out for moose that frequent the area. Further along, keep an eye out for cars pulled over and people looking up at the cliffs along the rugged Chugach Mountains, where Dall sheep love to hang out. Eventually, the train route heads into the mountains and passes by Trail Glacier and Kenai Lake.

Coastal Classic Train passes Kenai Peninsula

Once in Seward, many passengers choose to head out into the pristine waters of Kenai Fjords National Park . The Alaska Railroad can help passengers book these add-on excursions and more with easily-bundled packages. Some examples include ziplining, a visit to a sled dog kennel, or a visit to the state’s only aquarium and research center — the Alaska SeaLife Center. At the end of your day, head back to the depot and board the Coastal Classic Train back to Anchorage, or book lodging to spend more time in the area.

Denali Star Train

Explore Northbound On The Denali Star Train

6. train trip from anchorage to talkeetna.

Talkeetna is a historic town located at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna Rivers. The downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Denali Star Train , the flagship train in the Alaska Railroad’s fleet, will transport you north along the Knik Arm and through the Matanuska Valley on a beautifully scenic route. When crossing the Knik and Matanuska Rivers, keep an eye out for bears, moose, and eagles.

If you are lucky enough to arrive on a clear day, incredible views of Denali , the tallest mountain in North America, will greet you. Once the train pulls into the station, you will have easy access to popular excursions in Talkeetna that can be added onto a rail trip. Options include jet boat tours, flightseeing, ziplining, hiking, biking, camping, and fishing. Leave time to shop downtown, where you will find made-in-Alaska products from local artisans. There is lodging available in the area, or you can make this a day trip.

Aurora Winter Train

The Aurora Winter Train

Hop aboard the Aurora Winter Train and explore Alaska’s winter wonderland from the comfort of a warm railcar.

7. Train Trip From Anchorage To Fairbanks

It is a 12-hour journey from Anchorage to Fairbanks and follows the same route as the summer Denali Star Train. The winter scenery with white snow and icy frozen rivers is enchanting. On clear days, the views of Denali are incredible. Moose are easier to spot with their brown fur contrasting against the snow-covered ground and vegetation. For the perfect weekend trip from Anchorage, book a Talkeetna Getaway package that bundles rail travel and overnight accommodations at the Talkeetna Cabins.

Alaska Railroad Services

The Alaska Railroad offers two types of service on their trains — GoldStar and Adventure Class services. With GoldStar, meals and drinks are included. Passengers also have access to a second-level outdoor viewing platform — perfect for taking pictures of the scenery, wildlife or family and friends.

With Adventure Class, passengers have reclining seats that are much roomier than an airplane seat as well as access to Vista Dome cars and large-picture windows. Not every train has GoldStar service. The ride I took on the Glacier Discovery Train only had Adventure Class service. I found the seats to be very comfortable and roomy. The bathrooms were spacious and clean. Overall, it was a very comfortable journey.

Rail Road-From Fairbanks

Alaska railroad tours from fairbanks.

Alaska is consistently voted as one of the most scenic, varied and dramatic places in the world when it comes to scenery and landscapes. This accounts for the numerous motorhomes and camper vans you’ll see driving along the Parks, Denali or Seward Highway, pulling up every now and again to take in some spectacular vista. However, there’s another great way to discover the best of Alaska and that is on board the Alaska Railroad. Here are our most scenic train journeys, starting in Fairbanks and are an ideal extension to your self drive tour, Alaska Ferry Trip or Inside Passage cruise. Board the last full-service railroad in North America or one of the privately operated trains. Admire the breathtaking nature in glass-domed or regular rail car compartments - all with large panorama windows ensuring unobstructed views of snowcapped mountain ranges, pristine scenery and wildlife. Fairbanks is the perfect change over point for a journey into Alaska’s interior and Arctic Region. Founded by a gold prospector in 1901, Fairbanks, like many other towns in Alaska, struggled until the construction of the Trans-Alaska pipeline in the mid 1970s. Now this eclectic mix of log cabins, modern office buildings and a university campus is recognised as Alaska’s gateway to the Arctic. Several tours are available from Fairbanks, including trips to the Arctic Circle, the native village Fort Yukon or Chena Hot Springs Resort. A popular activity is the Gold Dredge No. 8 tour or the Riverboat Discovery Cruise on the Nenana River. Check out these adventures to easily fill the long days — just don’t forget to sleep at some point!

Alaska Railroad Grandview Scenic Train - Anchorage to Seward

scenic train trips alaska

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

If your Alaska cruise embarks or disembarks in Seward, you will need a transfer to or from Anchorage which is 127 miles away. Cruise passengers can choose either a 3-hour bus transfer or a 4.5-hour ride on the Grandview Train of the Alaska Railroad . The train runs directly between the Anchorage airport and the cruise pier in Seward so it's a great option for cruise passengers.

The train fare is about 40 to 50 percent more than the bus, but the wilderness train route is more scenic and relaxing, passing by picturesque glaciers, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and mountains. In addition, the road is very busy in the summer and circles around the mountains, so you won't get as close to the glaciers as you will on the rails.

The Alaska Railroad initiated the Grandview passenger train in 2000 to serve cruise ship passengers traveling between Seward and Anchorage. The train follows the Coastal Classic route, but the departure time is adjusted for the cruise ships.

At the Station in Anchorage

The Alaska Railroad train station in Anchorage is across the street from the Anchorage Airport, so it's easy to fly into Anchorage and take the train to your cruise ship. However, there's so much to do in Anchorage, it's better to fly in a few days before and spend some time sightseeing in the city.

In Seward , the Grandview Train terminal is at the cruise pier, so it is very convenient for those riding the train from Anchorage. Seward also has several hotels and accommodations for guests who want to arrive a day or so before their cruise and do some exploring of the region around Seward.

Alaska Railroad Dome Car

The domed-car seats on the Alaska Railroad Grandview Train are arranged four to a table, making for a comfortable ride with a scenic view through the roof of the train. It's fun to be able to see all of the surrounding scenery and mountain tops (even when it is raining or cool). Sitting at a table is also very conducive to conversation, so it offers people the opportunity to make new friends as they ride.

Turnagain Arm of the Cook Inlet

Clouds often cover the mountains, giving them an eerie appearance.  Visitors to Alaska soon learn to appreciate the "mist" that covers many of the mountain tops. Turnagain Arm, one of two arms at Cook Inlet, is subject to climate extremes and large tide ranges.

Waterfall Views

Alaska has many waterfalls, and this one is visible from the train. Cruise travelers will see many more waterfalls as their ship visits the fjords of Alaska.

Mountain, Marshes, and Wildlife

This type of marshy area is perfect for moose, but none were visible on this day. Visitors to Alaska should always be on the lookout for moose when they see a boggy or swampy area.

There are opportunities for viewing wildlife from the train and you may see black and brown bear, caribou, moose, bald eagle, ptarmigan, salmon, mountain goat, and Dahl sheep.

Mountain View

Even though the weather is not too cold in Alaska in the summer months, visitors will see snow-capped mountains year 'round. This photo was taken in July, and you can see snow in the mountains the entire summer season before the first snow showers start to fall in September.

Spencer Glacier Views

Spencer Glacier rises 3,500 feet from a lake of blue icebergs. The train linking Anchorage and Seward includes a look at this glacier, one of many that cruise passengers have an opportunity to see since Alaska is famous for its tidal glaciers that seem to flow into the ocean.

Alaska Railroad Grandview Train - Coastal Classic Train

When on a train, it's always fun to get a photo of the rest of the train when you are going around a bend. The Alaska Railroad Grandview Train consists of regular passenger and dome observation cars pulled by diesel engines.

River Views

The Coastal Train passengers see snow-capped mountains, lakes, glaciers, and even a few rivers and streams as their train makes its way from Anchorage to Seward. The rivers look grey as they carry glacial run-off on their journey to the sea.

Bartlett Glacier

The Grandview Train passes within 800 feet of the Bartlett Glacier. The Coastal Classic train has local experts on board who will point out all of the important sites along the route. Bartlett Glacier is 30 nautical miles long and 5 nautical miles wide. It was named after Captain Robert A. Bartlett, of Newfoundland, an Arctic explorer.
