Five times The Simpsons was right, as Cypress Hill confirm they’ll perform with the London Symphony Orchestra

Cypress Hill has confirmed they will perform alongside an orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall this summer, once more realising a joke made on The Simpsons .

The cartoon has become famous for gags which have become real-life events in the years that followed. And it appears the writers struck gold with 1996 episode Homerpalooza, where rap group Cypress Hill collaborate with the London Symphony Orchestra .

In the series seven episode, Homer finds his size makes him perfect cannon fodder – or, more accurately, he is large enough to take a hit from a cannonball and survive as part of a travelling music festival’s sideshow.

The Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth make cameos, but the episode is best remembered for a scene when the orchestra arrives. It later transpired that Peter Frampton had hired the London Symphony, but the rocker was not on set when a roadie arrived with the ensemble.

“Who is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra?” the roadie asks. “Come on, people, somebody ordered [them], possibly while high… Cypress Hill, I’m looking in your direction.”

The rap group cannot remember hiring them but discuss what to do before agreeing to perform their 1993 hit Insane in the Brain with the orchestra, a rendition that wins the approval of Marge as Homer nods in respect.

In real life, Cypress Hill did not say the idea came about when they were high, or that the Colorado Symphony had been stolen from Peter Frampton.

The LSO and director Troy Miller will accompany the Californian hip-hop group, which consists of B-Real, Sen Dog, and Eric Bobo, in July. Miller will adapt the band's songs for orchestra, including singles from their landmark 1993 album Black Sunday.

Cypress Hill said : “We are thrilled to be performing with the London Symphony Orchestra in such a prestigious venue as the Royal Albert Hall.

“It’s a dream come true, a collaboration only The Simpsons could have predicted.”

But this is not the first time The Simpsons has been eerily on the money when it comes to predicting the future.

Here are five far-out events the show foresaw.

1. Video calls and smartwatches

Lisa’s Wedding was a 1995 episode that looked ahead to 2010 and made many wacky predictions, including the Rolling Stones holding a “Steel Wheelchair” tour, World War Three having been fought, and Big Ben going digital.

However, two things it got right were smartwatches and video conferencing, with the internet still in its infancy in the 1990s.

2. Walt Disney and Fox merging

A running joke on The Simpsons is how it makes fun of its production company, 20th Century Fox, and the corporation’s owner, Rupert Murdoch. This was again played up in 1998, with episode When You Dish Upon a Star, where Fox Studios is shown on a poster to be “a division of Walt Disney Co”.

The apparent belittling of their producers was a blink-and-you-miss-it gag but one which showed amazing foresight, with a $71 billion (£56 m) merger in 2019.

3. Censoring Michelangelo’s David

In series two episode Itchy & Scratchy & Marge, Mrs Simpson successfully lobbies for limits on cartoon violence. However, she steps back from leading a mob of protestors when the group changes its target to Michelangelo’s David, when it is announced the masterpiece sculpture will, oddly, be exhibited in Springfield.

The mob had called for David’s private parts to be covered with a pair of jeans, a comically sheltered idea that took off in St Petersburg, and in Florida recently , where images of the statue were deemed “pornographic” and parents objected to their children studying the masterpiece.

4. A three-eyed fish

Another series two episode sees Mr Burns in hot (or toxic) water when a three-eyed fish is discovered in a pond near his nuclear power plant.

But Blinky, as the fish was called, had a real-life counterpart. In 2013, a real- life three-eyed fish was discovered in Argentina … near to a nuclear power plant.

5. President Trump

Lisa Simpson made the craziest prediction of them all. In series 11 episode Bart to the Future, Lisa is shown in the future to have become president of the United States — while her brother is a struggling musician.

While the 2000-released episode came at around the time the show began to decline in quality, it showed writers were still spot-on in their predictions. Lisa, as “the first straight female president”, says: “We have inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump. ” Sixteen years later, guess who was taking office?

However, it looks like America is still not ready for a female president, although maybe that prediction will one day become true as well...

6. Winter Olympics

The Simpsons won the gold eight years before the US men's Olympic team's victory in the 2018 Winter Olympics. The episode had Homer and Marge forming a curling team and competing all the way to the finals of the 2010 Winter Olympics aired. After almost conceding a loss due to injury, they defeated Sweden, but Marge came up big and led them all the way to the top of the podium.

7. Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl

During the 2017 Super Bowl halftime act, Lady Gaga was lowered onto wires into the stadium.

The stunt strikingly resembled Gaga's performance from the 2012 episode Lisa Goes Gaga. In the episode, which showcased Gaga's musical abilities, the Poker Face singer performed in Springfield following her friendship with Lisa.

8. Greece’s economic crash

This one is spooky.

A 2012 episode featured a throwaway joke that foresaw how absurd the scenario would turn out, three years before Greece became the first country to fail on an IMF loan repayment and cause a government debt catastrophe."Europe puts Greece on eBay" is a ticker that Homer sees on a rolling news programme.

9. Horse meat

In a 1994 episode, the students at Springfield Elementary School were eating horse flesh for lunch without realising it.

And so were we, some two decades later. The European horse meat scandal exposed the presence of different meats, notably equine flesh, in products marketed as beef.

10. Faulty voting

When Homer attempts to vote for Barack Obama at an electronic polling machine in the 2008 Halloween special, the system fails and casts a vote for his opponent, John McCain.

Four years later, after it was shown on camera casting votes meant for Obama but instead going to his actual opponent Mitt Romney, a Pennsylvania voting system was taken out of commission.

In December last year, the film and hip-hop star dropped a new record entitled ‘Snoop, Cube, 40, $hort’ with Mount Westmore.  In a three-star review, NME said that the album “having to accommodate four distinct styles and personalities is no simple task – but while there are moments of brilliance, it’s clear there are too many chefs in the kitchen.”

It has also recently been announced that I ce Cube will join Run-DMC for their headline set at a one-off celebratory concert , honouring 50 years of hip-hop. Hip-Hop 50 Live will also see Snoop Dogg, Eve , Common and more perform at the event.

The Game dropped his 11th studio album ‘Drillmatic – Heart vs. Mind’ last year and called it “the best rap album out right now”. It featured rap stars like A$AP Rocky , Pusha T and Kanye West , as well as a 10-minute long diss to Eminem called ‘The Black Slim Shady’ .

In April, Cypress Hill said they want to make a The Simpsons’ joke about them performing with a classical orchestra into “a reality.” Also, they have sued Peloton , a fitness subscription service, for illegally using the rap troupe’s 1993 track ‘Insane In The Brain’.

Last year, the group announced that the next record they release will be their “final traditional” album . The news came ahead of the release of their 10th studio album, ‘Back In Black’, in 2022.

Cypress Hill are working on a secret project with the London Symphony Orchestra, The Independent can reveal.

In an exclusive interview, the hip-hop legends spoke about their plans, their British influences, and Donald Trump.

Cypress Hill, who released their self-titled double platinum debut album 26 years ago, are currently on a tour of Europe.

Boomtown fair gives a welcome break from reality

The Independent spoke with founding members Sen Dog and B-Real prior to their packed-out show at Boomtown Festival last month.

Rumours have abounded on social media about the potential collaboration between Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra, who are among the finest classical musicians on earth.

The two outfits were once parodied in an episode of The Simpsons, which Cypress Hill tweeted a reference to in March this year.

Unexpectedly, the Orchestra's Twitter responded: “We mostly play classical … but we'll give it a shot.”

Cypress Hill then replied: “Let[s] make something happen for real … It would be amazing to work on something with you.”

The exchange sparked a flurry of anticipation among music fans, but there was no official confirmation of a collaboration.

But speaking to The Independent on the topic, B-Real says: “Well, we’re kinda working on putting something together, just figuring out when and where and what. But y’know it’s definitely something in the works. Wouldn’t wanna give too much away.”

The project will be released “next year sometime,” Sen Dog explains, and B-Real adds that the band would be exploring the collaboration during their brief time in the UK.

Long-time fans will not be overly surprised — a range of styles is key to the Cypress Hill experience. Their rolling beats were the soundtrack to a generation of stoners worldwide, but the music soaks up influences from all over, and this is particularly reflected in their live performances.

“We like to mix things up,” Sen Dog says. “We don’t wanna do anything that’s gonna be considered stereotypical. You never know who we’re gonna invite to be in front of us or to be part of the bill. But I think when you have diversity like that in a concert; a lot of people dig that s***, y’know?”

Growing up in south east Los Angeles, the members of Cypress Hill listened to “everything really,” B-Real says. “Old school R&B type music, considerable soul, funk, rock and roll from classic rock to present. A little bit of everything and eventually hip hop."

Inside the drug testing service trying to keep festivalgoers safe

The mix of styles and attitudes led to the band in their current form: “We didn’t just hang out with hip hoppers and b-boys and stuff y’know,” Sen Dog says. “I mean we got friends all across the board, so we were the type of kids that went to any type of event as long as it was cool.

“And listening to all this music and stuff and all these different perspectives when we got started and we decided that we were gonna open things up and involve more elements of the things we enjoyed into Cypress.

"I think we’re still like that, we’re not scared to take chances or risks with musical styles or anything, we believe in ourselves first of all and what we grew up on shaped us as musicians to this day.”

Nas and The Weeknd at Wireless, review

Some younger fans may be surprised by the British bands played which played their part in Cypress Hill’s development. While Sen Dog and B-Real have heard of Stormzy and Skepta, they still don’t know what grime is.

Instead, their main British influences go further back: “The stuff we were listening to as kids was like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Cream,” B-Real says.

“The Yardbirds” Sen Dog added.

But the biggest British musician, according to Cypress, is another one of London’s own.

“I think the biggest artist in the last 10 years has been Adele,” B-Real decides. “She’s been f***ing huge and she’s impacted people around the world.”

Cypress Hill are known for being the first Latino hip hop groups to break into mainstream culture, with members’ families hailing from Cuba, Mexico and beyond. So how do they feel about their current President, who used the scape-goating of immigrants to fuel his campaign?

“It has created some division in our country, that’s for certain," B-Real responds. "But there’s more people opposed to the message he was spewing out than for it.

“There’s a still underlying racism in America unfortunately. It doesn’t really affect us musically, we just keep doing what we’re doing and it’s not something that we see any negative reaction from in terms of going on tour.

“But in the political realm is definitely fucked up and well see what happens in the next three years.”

Sen-Dog admits he was surprised to find Trump elected. “His behaviour during the elections, he certainly didn’t act like a presidential candidate should... I thought other people would take exception to that,” he said.

And has their hometown, LA, kept up with the other cultural metamorphoses which have swept the rest of the country?

“A lot of people are still moving in, a lot of culture and diversity,” Sen Dog says. “I’d like to think things have changed but we’ve still got a lot of gangbanging, stuff like that. Cops are still as corrupt as ever. A lot of things have changed but a lot remains the same.”

Cypress Hill continue their tour in the US until 1 November

Recent tour reviews

Had a great time seeing an listening to Cypress Hill at the show. They looked and sounded great musically and lyrically! The only issue was it seemed Madball was rushed and didn't really get to play many of their classic songs because of the time constraints and Cypress Hills intro before any of their music was even played was longer than Madballs while set! That was a shame because Madball really could've had an opportunity to showcase they're really good stuff and got the crowd even more pumped for Cypress Hill and likewise afforded Cypress Hills fans to a more diverse enjoyable musically crossover experience.

The show was amazing despite there being very little or no moshing at all. I've seen Cypress Hill many times before and the crowd wasn't as hype as other times. Drinks prices are ridiculous at this particular venue. Regardless I would come see Cypress Hill again and again.

I saw Cypress Hill 3 times back from around '93-'01, & they were unbelievably unbelievable!! I only love & worship them even more. Each & every time I saw 'em I got stoned righteously before every concert so I could see & hear the music exactly how it was meant to be heard. I loved 'em the first time I ever heard 'em & my love for 'em has only continued to grow & get even better as the years go by!!!!!

In a groundbreaking announcement, the pioneering hip-hop group Cypress Hill has revealed their much-anticipated Spring 2024 Tour. Joining forces with the iconic rap groups The Pharcyde and Souls Of Mischief, this tour is poised to deliver an unforgettable musical experience. The tour dates and key details are outlined below.

Cypress Hill: A Legacy of Innovation and Success

Hailing from South Gate, California, Cypress Hill emerged on the music scene in 1988, marking a significant milestone in hip-hop history. The group's core members - rapper B-Real (Louis Freese), DJ Muggs (Lawrence Muggerud), and rapper Sen Dog (Senen Reyes) - have been instrumental in crafting the distinctive Cypress Hill sound. Renowned for being the first Latino-American hip-hop group to gain widespread acclaim, their innovative blend of heavy metal, Latin rhythms, and classic hip-hop has resonated with fans globally.

Throughout their illustrious career, Cypress Hill has been a force of artistic creativity, churning out hit albums and tracks that have become staples in the hip-hop genre. Their debut self-titled album, released in 1991, achieved double platinum status, setting the stage for a series of successful records. Tracks like “Insane in the Brain,” “How I Could Just Kill a Man,” and “Hits from the Bong” have cemented their status as hip-hop royalty. With multiple Grammy nominations and over 20 million records sold worldwide, their influence on the music industry is undeniable.

"We Legalized It" Tour: A Musical Odyssey

Dubbed the “We Legalized It” tour, Cypress Hill's upcoming journey is a celebration of their enduring legacy and the vibrant history of hip-hop. As reported by Brooklyn Vegan, the tour ignites on April 18 in Boston, with a special performance at Brooklyn Steel in New York City on April 19. The tour's itinerary is a mix of solo performances and high-profile festival appearances, including Columbus’ Sonic Temple and Daytona’s Welcome to Rockville. A notable highlight is their collaboration with Sublime with Rome at the iconic Colorado’s Red Rocks, promising an evening of memorable musical fusion.

Ice Cube performs at the Hydro in Glasgow.

Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, D12 review – old school hip-hop heroes are still masters of the mic

Hydro, Glasgow The focus of the 80s and 90s stars’ High Rollers tour is on storytelling rather than flashy staging, but it is a high-intensity show of real fire and focus

‘C an he still get on the mic and do what you like?” Ice Cube asks as he kicks off the UK leg of his High Rollers tour in Glasgow. It’s a question that hangs in the air – semi-rhetorical and positioned as a challenge by the veteran rapper, whose CV has exploded in all directions since his early gangsta rap days.

Ice Cube is joined on this tour by 90s stoner-rap legends Cypress Hill , with MCs B-Real and Sen Dog presenting a slick yet frenzied set of their best work. Flanked by clouds of customary weed smoke, they pack in a wealth of activity – from DJ Lord’s mixing of KRS-One’s Sound of da Police with Metallica’s Enter Sandman to the lone piper who appears on stage and fills the Hydro with a satisfying rendition of Flower of Scotland. Tracks such as Tequila Sunrise and (Rock) Superstar are given extra weight thanks to the drumming of ex-Beastie Boys percussionist Eric Bobo, while B-Real and Sen Dog’s rhythmic prowess shines on I Wanna Get High, Latin Lingo and the suitably trippy finale of Insane in the Brain.

The gig would have been a west coast trifecta had opener the Game made his way to Glasgow as planned. Instead he was replaced by a scaled down version of Detroit collective D12, who are just about to begin a 20th-anniversary tour. Swifty McVay and Kuniva serve as quintessential hype men for an audience not necessarily expecting their presence, tearing through hits such as Rap Game, My Band and Purple Pills to warm the crowd. There’s even a cover of Eminem’s Lose Yourself, accompanied by guitarist Jake Bass, the son of the track’s original co-producer and riff composer.

Ice Cube then makes good on his promise to “keep it gangsta” with the fast and furious introduction of Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It, Natural Born Killaz and Hello. Against a backdrop of photos and clips from his music and film careers, the focus is on lyricism rather than gimmickry or flashy staging. He is joined by his Westside Connection bandmate WC, who adds emphasis to career-spanning favourites such as Check Yo Self, You Know How We Do It and Why We Thugs, as well as No Vaseline – proclaimed the “best diss track ever made in the history of hip-hop” – and NWA’s Straight Outta Compton.

Ice Cube’s flow has always been characterised by defiance, whether in response to racial tensions, the brutality of street life or trauma in the Black community. But what sets him apart is his skill at weaving in the mundane and peppering even his most anthemic and provocative stanzas with humour and levity. On stage tonight there is real fire in his storytelling and streams of consciousness, and his focus never dips even for a minute.

Ice Cube’s credentials over the past two decades may have included actor, film producer, director, basketball league co-founder and more. But tonight he is back to being one of the west coast’s finest rap exports, and evidently still doing what he likes on the mic.
