Boxer's Entourage Flying to His Fight Springs Into Action After Man Tries to Open Door Mid-Flight

Those who intervened include the brother of British boxer Dillian Whyte

British boxer Dillian Whyte may be the fighter in his family, but his brother Dean Whyte was ready for the fight of his life this week when a man on their British Airways flight tried to open an exit door while they were in the air.

While Dillian and Dean were on BA Flight 263 Monday night, a passenger, who was believed to be having a panic attack, tried to pull the lever on a door at the back of the plane while screaming “I want to get out,” according to The Guardian . The aircraft was reportedly about an hour away from its destination in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Dean, who was sitting in the economy section , was alerted of the commotion when several passengers and flight attendants tried to remove the man away from the door, according to the outlet.

Dean sprang into action and was able to stop the man from pulling on the door lever by grabbing the distraught flyer in a bearhug, pulling him away while repeatedly saying, “Calm down, bruv,” he told The Guardian.

“It was like something out of a movie. When I got there he was shouting ‘I want to get out’ in broken English,” he told The Guardian . “I managed to grab him and was preparing to slam him hard if necessary but myself and the steward could see he wasn’t quite right in the head so I held him and tried to calm him down. Eventually, it worked.”

A spokesperson for British Airways told PEOPLE that the distraught passenger, fortunately, did not have to be restrained and after being calmed down and he returned to his seat, where he remained for the rest of the flight.

Authorities were not called when the plane landed, the airline confirmed.

Dean was traveling to Saudi Arabia for his brother’s fight on the undercard of boxer Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Andy Ruiz Jr.

Dillian was also on the plane, though the athlete was sitting towards the front of the aircraft, Dean told Sky Sports.

“I was complaining about being in economy,” he said in an interview with the sports network. “But luckily, I was there for a reason. I managed to intervene and kind of help the situation.”

British Airways told PEOPLE it was impossible for an aircraft door to open in flight. A statement from the airline read: “Our cabin crew cared for a customer who suffered from a panic attack during the flight. We are sorry for any concern this caused our customers.”

British tourist arrested after ‘trying to open plane door on flight to Lanzarote’

Police have now arrested a British tourist who had to be overpowered after allegedly trying to open a plane door during his flight to Lanzarote .

Two off-duty cops heading to the island on holiday reportedly had to intervene and bring the man under control before his detention once the plane landed.

The unnamed Brit allegedly resisted arrest and left three officers injured before being taken off the plane in handcuffs.

The Spanish Association of Civil Guards AEGC on Saturday revealed they had gone to hospital after the incident and said officers should be armed with tasers to deal with problem passengers.

The airline he was travelling with has not been identified.

Police sources told respected island newspaper La Voz de Lanzarote he had been “aggressive” throughout the flight and at one point had tried to open an emergency door.

They also said two off-duty officers travelling to Lanzarote for a holiday, thought to be have been British although there has not been any official confirmation of their nationalities, had intervened before the plane landed to overpower the problem passenger.

The injuries the officers suffered are not believed to be serious but has led to them having to take time off work to recover.

AEGC spokesman Jose Cobo said: “A very aggressive person, in that altered state of mind, is very dangerous because he doesn’t feel the blows, however many times you hit him with a baton, but the officers of course feel them.”

The organisation added in a statement: “The British tourist assaulted three police officers at Lanzarote Airport when they tried to remove him from a plane.

“They all had to go to hospital and are now off work. Our association feels officers should be given tasers to deal with situations like the one that occurred on Thursday when the violent attitude of a passenger requires a police presence.

“If one of them had been armed with a taser, none of them would probably have ended up injured and we would now be talking about a successful operation.”

The British tourist was due to appear in court late on Friday, although court officials could not be reached on Saturday morning to comment on the case.

A 27-year-old British boxer has been removed from a flight after he tried to open the plane door and was subsequently tackled by fellow passengers, video footage has revealed.

The man was detained on Friday night ahead of a busy flight from Zadar in Croatia.

The boxer was recorded getting up from his seat and yelling before heading to the front of the plane to demand staff to open the door.

Two passengers sprung into action to restrain the 27-year-old by tackling him to the ground.

Other passengers stopped the 27-year-old

The woman who filmed the incident claimed most passengers were returning from Croatia’s Hideout festival.

She also suggested the man was drunk and potentially under the influence of drugs.

The British tourist, who was wearing a white t-shirt and shorts, was later clipped being escorted off the plane and dragged across the airport’s tarmac.

Zadar Police Department confirmed a 27-year-old British man had been arrested and the force had launched an investigation into the incident.

A statement said: “The police officers of the Zadar Police Department have completed the criminal investigation against a 27-year-old citizen of Great Britain on suspicion of having committed the crime of coercion against an official and a misdemeanour from article six of the act on offences against public order and peace.

“During the police’s treatment of him, the 27-year-old suspect offered active resistance all the time, which he continued in the further course of the police’s treatment, that is, during the investigation before the competent court, for which coercion was used against him.

“Due to his distracted state, he was then sent from the court to the hospital and physically attacked police officers in the official vehicle, as well as in the hospital premises, and tried to injure himself.

“As a result of the above, a police officer was injured and received minor physical injuries.”

Footage shows the moment a passenger had to be restrained after trying to open a plane door during a flight.

Zadar Police Department said the man was a 27-year-old Brit , who was accused of ‘disrupting public order and peace in a particularly brazen and indecent manner’ at Zadar Airport in Zemunik Donji, Croatia , on Friday 30 June.

Ryanair said the flight that was due to travel to London Stansted from Zadar 'returned to stand' after a passenger became 'disruptive while preparing for take-off'.

They were removed by local police between the flight continued 'safely' to Stansted.

According to one passenger, many people on the Ryanair flight had been at Hideout Festival , which was held in Zrce, on the island of Pag, between 25 and 29 June.

“Lad wanted to open the door mid flight, going from Hideout Festival, Croatia,” TikToker @vibs1.0 said as they posted the footage – although it is not known who originally shared the video.

The man was arrested at Zadar Airport.

BNN reports the man was later identified as a professional boxer , but he has not yet been named.

Zadar Police Department said the passenger was arrested at the scene and, following an investigation, was taken to the Criminal Misdemeanor Department of the Municipal Court in Zadar.

In a statement automatically translated to English, the force said: “The police officers of the Zadar Police Department have completed the criminal investigation against a 27-year-old citizen of Great Britain on suspicion of having committed the crime of coercion against an official and a misdemeanor from Art. 6 of the Act on offenses against public order and peace.”

It continued: “During the police's treatment of him, the 27-year-old suspect offered active resistance all the time, which he continued in the further course of the police's treatment, that is, during the investigation before the competent court, for which coercion was used against him.

He was restrained by a number of passengers.

“Due to his distracted state, he was then sent from the court to the hospital and physically attacked police officers in the official vehicle, as well as in the hospital premises, and tried to injure himself. As a result of the above, a police officer was injured and received minor physical injuries.”

The police department added: “After the completion of the criminal investigation, the suspected 27-year-old citizen of Great Britain was last night handed over to the custody supervisor of the Zadar Police Department with a criminal report on suspicion of committing the crime of Force on an official person, which was submitted to the competent state attorney's office in Zadar.”

A spokesperson for Ryanair told LADbible: “This flight from Zadar to London Stansted (30 June) returned to stand when an individual passenger became disruptive while preparing for take-off. The passenger was removed from the aircraft by local police before this flight continued safely to London Stansted.

"This is now a matter for local police. We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of this passenger’s disruptive behaviour.”

Horrifying moment Brit tries to open plane door during take off before being tackled to floor by other passengers

3 July 2023, 18:25 | Updated: 3 July 2023, 18:33

The man was tackled on the plane by other passengers.

By Jenny Medlicott

This is the shocking moment a passenger tries to open the door of a crowded plane before being tackled to the floor by two other men on board.

A man was detained on a packed flight flying from Zadar, Croatia on Friday night after he attempted to open the plane’s door during take off.

The man, believed to be 27 and from the UK, was reportedly on his way back from a festival when he started a panic on the plane as he repeatedly called for staff to “open the door”.

A video posted online shows the man stood on the plane, red faced and shouting down at those seated below and around him.

The man, who is reportedly a boxer, keeps shouting “open the door” before he suddenly storms past a member of staff on the plane and heads towards the plane door.

Two men on board then quickly jump up from their seats to tackle and restrain him.

A member of staff can be seen shouting at the three passengers in a desperate plea to restore calm on the plane, while those around them stand watching in shock.

The plane was driving along the Croatian runway in preparation for take-off to London Stansted, The Sun reported.

According to the poster of the video the man responsible for causing the panic was under the influence of drugs and alcohol at the time.

He was later escorted off the plane, as seen in a follow-up video, and arrested by Zadar police who have said he is facing charges of disrupting public order.

An investigation has since been launched into the incident, BNN reported.

The man, seen wearing a light green shirt, tries to open the door of the plane.

A spokesman for Ryanair told The Sun: “This flight from Zadar to London Stansted returned to stand when an individual passenger became disruptive while preparing for take-off.

"The passenger was removed from the aircraft by local police before this flight continued safely to London Stansted.

"This is now a matter for local police.

"We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of this passenger’s disruptive behaviour.”

It comes after in May a man opened the emergency door of a Korean plane mid-flight, forcing a pilot to make an emergency landing.

The man opened the door at roughly 650ft in the air and 12 people had to be taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after the incident.

Ryanair passenger tries to open plane door before he's tackled by hero tourists

The Ryanair passenger, believed to be a British tourist returning from Zadar, Croatia, shouted and barged his way down the aisle before attempting to open the plane doors

british tourist tries to open door on flight

A Ryanair passenger has been arrested after trying to open a plane door on a flight from Croatia to London.

The 27-year-old man jumped from his seat moments before take-off at Zadar Airport on June 30 and tried to force the door open.

But other tourists became have-a-go heroes to help restrain the man, and he was removed from the plane and arrested.

Ryanair operates flights to both London Gatwick and London Stansted Airports from the Croatian city on the Dalmatian coast, and this plane was destined for the latter.

The terrifying struggle was filmed by other passengers on the plane.

Footage shows the man, believed to be a Brit, ripping off his sunglasses and pointing at another passenger. He rants furiously, before rushing into the aisle.

The tourist is seen brushing past a female flight attendant as he tries to force his way down the aisle, screaming: "Open the door, open the door!"

He is only stopped when two other passengers throw themselves onto him and take him to the ground.

One passenger can be heard saying: "Get him out!"

And the person filming can be heard asking: "What the f*** is happening right now?"

Further footage shows him being led back to the airport by police as the plane prepares to take off.

One passenger can be heard saying: "Oh my God! He's getting dragged the f*** away!"

Local media reported that the British tourist - who has not been named - was questioned by the police before being examined by a judge on July 1.

Police in Croatia said the man resisted arrest and was taken to hospital and is in custody on suspicion of assaulting an officer.

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: "This flight from Zadar to London Stansted (30 June) returned to stand when an individual passenger became disruptive while preparing for take-off. The passenger was removed from the aircraft by local police before this flight continued safely to London Stansted.

"This is now a matter for local police. We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of this passenger’s disruptive behaviour."

Brit tourist arrested after 'trying to open plane door on flight to Lanzarote'

A British tourist had to be overpowered as he was arrested for allegedly trying to open a plane door during a flight to Lanzarote.

Two off-duty cops heading to the island on holiday reportedly had to intervene and bring the man under control before his detention once the plane landed.

The unnamed traveller, said to have been under the influence of drunk or drugs, resisted arrest and injured three officers before being taken off the plane in handcuffs.

The Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC) revealed they had gone to hospital after the incident and said officers should be armed with tasers to deal with problem passengers like the ‘violent’ tourist they encountered on Thursday.

The airline he was travelling with has not been identified.

Police sources told respected island newspaper La Voz de Lanzarote he had been ‘aggressive’ throughout the flight and at one point had tried to open an emergency door.

They also said two off-duty officers travelling to Lanzarote for a holiday, thought to be have been British although there has not been any official confirmation of their nationalities, had intervened before the plane landed to overpower the problem passenger.

The injuries the officers suffered are not believed to be serious, but has led to them having to take time off work to recover.

AEGC spokesman Jose Cobo said: ‘A very aggressive person, in that altered state of mind, is very dangerous because he doesn’t feel the blows, however many times you hit him with a baton, but the officers of course feel them.’

The organisation added in a statement: ‘The British tourist assaulted three police officers at Lanzarote Airport when they tried to remove him from a plane.

‘They all had to go to hospital and are now off work.

‘Our association feels officers should be given tasers to deal with situations like the one that occurred on Thursday when the violent attitude of a passenger requires a police presence.

‘If one of them had been armed with a taser, none of them would probably have ended up injured and we would now be talking about a successful operation.’

The British tourist was due to appear in court late on Friday, although court officials could not be reached by Saturday morning to comment on the case.

Earlier this month a flight from Manchester to Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport descended into chaos when a group of Brits began brawling on a KLM plane.

The fighting broke out as the plane landed but passengers claimed tensions had been brewing the entire journey after one group made racist comments towards the other.

Dutch police confirmed afterwards six British nationals had been arrested for unlawful and disruptive behaviour.

A spokesperson for KLM said of the May 5 incident: ‘We had some unruly passengers on our KLM 1070 flight from Manchester to Amsterdam.

‘The captain and cabin crew put an end to a brawl between two groups of passengers.

‘All involved were arrested upon arrival at Schiphol Airport. No delay occurred.’

A man from the United Kingdom, aged 27, caused a distressing incident onboard a Ryanair flight from Zadar, Croatia. The man attempted to open the plane’s door during take-off, leading to panic among the passengers.

However, fellow passengers quickly restrained him. The individual involved in the incident is a British boxer and was subsequently detained.

In the video, the man disrupts the packed Ryanair flight by standing up from his seat, removing his sunglasses, and demanding that the crew open the door. He also makes peculiar gestures towards other passengers before moving towards the door. Throughout the incident, he repeatedly shouts, “Open the door.” Two passengers intervene, rising from their seats and threw him on the floor.

The British boxer was removed from the plane and taken to the hospital after resisting arrest. Currently, he remains in custody on suspicion of assaulting an officer.

A spokesperson for the airline told The Independent , “During the preparation for take-off, a passenger on this flight from Zadar to London Stansted (30 June) became disruptive. The flight returned to the stand, and the passenger was removed by local police before the flight continued safely to London Stansted.”

“The local police are handling the matter, and we apologize sincerely to the affected passengers for any inconvenience caused by this disruptive behavior,” the spokesperson added.

A man on a British Airways flight stepped in to stop a panicking passenger from opening the door as the plane was at 10,000 metres.

Passenger Dean Whyte, who stands a towering 200cm tall, bear-hugged the man when he started trying to pull on the exit lever screaming “I want to get out”.

The terrifying incident happened about an hour before British Airways flight 263 from London Heathrow to Saudi Arabia was due to touch down on Monday night, local time, The Sun reported.

RELATED: What happens if a plane door opens mid-flight?

It’s reported the “clearly agitated” man attempted to open a door at the rear of the plane while shouting out in broken English.

The incident happened on a British Airways flight from London to Saudi Arabia.

Another passenger, Ian McNally, spotted what was happening and quickly tried to stop a potential disaster.

Then Mr Whyte, the brother of British professional boxer Dillian Whyte and a boxer himself,

rushed down the aisle to help along with other members of his entourage.

He was able to clinch the man in a powerful bear hug and drag him away from the door while saying: “Calm down, bruv.”

“It was like something out of a movie,” Mr Whyte later told The Guardian .

“When I got there he was shouting ‘I want to get out’ in broken English.

Passenger Dean Whyte was hailed a hero for helping to stop the man.

“I managed to grab him and was preparing to slam him hard if necessary. I held him and tried to calm him down. Eventually it worked.”

Flight attendants carrying handcuffs closed in on the man, and he eventually went back to his seat for the remainder of the flight.

Mr Whyte was travelling to Saudi Arabia to support brother Dillian ahead of his fight on the undercard of Saturday’s Andy Ruiz Jr v Anthony Joshua heavyweight title fight.

Joshua’s mother Yeta Odusanya was also on the plane along with several staff from fight promoters Matchroom Sport.

Fellow flight “hero” Ian McNally said of Mr Whyte: “I was mightily relieved when I saw him rushing to help.”

Another passenger added: “I thought that was it. Everyone who intervened were heroes.”

A British Airways spokesperson said: “Our cabin crew cared for a customer who suffered from a panic attack during the flight. We are sorry for any concern this caused our customers.”

The airline also pointed out it was impossible for an aircraft door to open in flight.

Physics Explains Why You Can’t Open a Plane Door in the Air

side profile of British Airway plane

It’s the nightmare of travelers sitting near the emergency exit and the inevitable fate of bad guys tussling on a plane with James Bond —the door erupting open mid-flight, sucking them into the cold blue and white.

This scenario was no doubt running through the minds of the passengers of a BA flight to Riyadh this week, when a man, reportedly in the grip of a panic attack , tried to pull open the aircraft door. He was restrained—by the brother of boxer of Dillian White, no less—and eventually calmed. The doors remained sealed.

This isn’t the first time passengers have attempted to exit a plane in midair. In 2015, a passenger gave it a go on a Hainan Airlines flight to Mongolia, this time as the plane was preparing to land. In June, Air Europa flight UX89 was forced to turn back after a passenger tried to pull open the emergency exit. And just last month, holidaymaker Chloe Haines appeared in court on charges of attacking two stewards who tried to stop her from doing the same. (The unifying detail of all of these stories is that the passengers were flagrantly drunk.)

While the prospect of being hurled into the troposphere due to the antics of a drunken passenger isn’t alluring, you’ll be pleased to hear that in all of these cases, the actual risk of the door being opened was nil.

There are two lines of defense at play here. The first is, as you might expect, that the doors are mechanically locked. These locks are controlled by the pilot. “You see that great big handle on the door—that's actually locked shut,” says Steve Wright, an associate professor of aerospace engineering at the University of the West of England. ”When the plane touches down and is taxing to the gate, you’ll hear the pilot say 'doors to manual.' It's only at that point where the pilot has handed off control, and where those doors are actually capable of being opened by someone standing near them.”

The reason the doors can be opened when you’re on the ground is simple, explains pilot Patrick Smith on his blog AskThePilot —it’s in case the plane needs to be evacuated. He points out that you may also hear the pilot relay the command “disarm doors,” which refers to the automatic deployment function of the slides. “Those slides can unfurl with enough force to kill a person, and you don’t want them billowing onto the jet bridge or into a catering truck,” he writes.

The bottom line of all this is that while you’re on the ground, it can be possible to open the door. In 2015, for instance, a video emerged of a man opening the door on the runway to “get some fresh air.”

During flight, however, it's a different story, and it all has to do with air pressure. When we rise higher in the atmosphere, less pressure is exerted on oxygen molecules (known as Boyle’s Law). This means that less pressure is available to let these molecules diffuse into our vascular systems—basically, it gets harder to breathe.

Nas’ Illmatic Was the Beginning of the End of the Album

C. Brandon Ogbunu

Once you get up above 18,000 feet, we begin not to take in enough oxygen to supply the brain—you’ll pass out in about half an hour. Since airliners fly between 30,000 and 43,000 feet, air needs to be pumped into the airplane to keep the interior pressure at a survivable level. (At this altitude, you’ll grow delirious within seconds and pass out in less than a minute, which is why air masks drop down during depressurization events, and why you should attend to yourself before a baby.) We are in fact in a mild state of hypoxia all the time on a flight.

But what’s all this got to do with the plane’s doors? Simply put, the cabin pressure seals them shut. You need to think of the door like a giant bath plug, explains Wright—taking advantage of this plug hole effect is why almost all aircraft exits open inward. “As you step off the plane, have a look at the door, you'll notice how it's quite an interesting tapered shape,” says Wright. “And that's because it's actually plugged in—you'll notice when the cabin crew opens it they have to do a special sort of Jimmy, or sideways shuffle, because effectively, the door is plugged into a hole.”

The math here is pretty simple, according to Michele Meo, a professor of materials at the University of Bath. “You cannot open it because the aircraft is pressurized, and the cabin pressure is higher than the outside air pressure,” he says. “The difference can be as much as 55,158.1 Newtons per square meter (or 5,500 kg applied to 1 square meter). Basically, the door is sealed against the aircraft frame.”

At lower altitude, the difference in pressure is smaller and it grows with altitude. According to Smith, this works out, at typical cruising altitude, at about 8 pounds of pressure pushing against every square inch of interior fuselage—1,100 pounds against each square foot of door. It doesn’t matter how strong the passenger who wants out happens to be; they aren’t opening that door.

For those of the morbid mindset, it’s actually the windows, not the doors, that are usually the plane’s weak spot, says Wright. And unfortunately, it isn’t a myth that in the event of a door blowing open, passengers would be sucked toward the opening. “In case of a decompression or door failure, the passengers will be sucked out because of the difference in pressure pushing the passengers outside, which is why it is always recommended to wear seat belts,” says Meo. “One famous accident was Aloha Airlines in the 1980s, caused by depressurization, but in that case there were existing cracks inside the airplane. The pressure acted from the inside and made the crack grow until the fuselage was ripped apart.”

Man duct-taped after trying to open exit door on American Airlines flight to Chicago

british tourist tries to open door on flight

Passengers on an American Airline flight bound for Chicago Tuesday jumped in to help restrain a passenger who attempted to open a plane door, according to information from witnesses and airline officials.

The intervention, captured on video, took place on AA Flight 1219 after the plane departed from Albuquerque, New Mexico bound for O'Hare International Airport, an American Airlines spokesperson confirmed to USA TODAY Wednesday morning.

One passenger posted a video of the melee on X and said he watched "a man trying to aggressively open the airplane door 4 rows back."

"Me and 5 other dudes had to wrestle him into the aisle, duct tape his legs, and throw flexi-cuffs on him," the passenger wrote in the post.

Video provided by WLS-TV shows a man in a red shirt and black hoodie being restrained by passengers near an exit door and being held down by what appears to be a group of men and tied up.

Subsequent video circulating online shows law enforcement officers escorting the same person off the plane onto the tarmac handcuffed.

British passenger tries to open aircraft’s door on Ryanair flight to London Stansted

Sharad Ranabhat

A British passenger on a Ryanair flight from Zadar, Croatia to London Stansted Airport tried to open the aircraft door while it was taxing to the runway for takeoff.

Two other passengers intervened and knocked him to the floor before he could succeed. He was held on the floor until the plane came to a stop.

Footage of the incident, which has since been shared on social media, shows the man standing up in the aisle of the plane and shouting at other passengers and cabin crew. He then raises his clenched fist and lunges for the plane’s door.

The man, who has not been identified yet, was reportedly taken into custody by police. It is not yet known what prompted his behavior.

The woman who filmed this incident said most people on the flight were returning from the Hideout festival in Croatia at the end of last month. She claimed that the man was drunk and under the influence of drugs.

“This flight from Zadar to London Stansted returned to stand when an individual passenger became disruptive while preparing for take-off. The passenger was removed from the aircraft by local police before this flight continued safely to London Stansted,” said an airline spokesperson.

What Happens When Someone Tries to Open the Exit Door Mid-Flight

By Brian Sumers and Lale Arikoglu

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Airplane Aircraft Airliner Airport and Airfield

Reports of bad passenger behavior at 30,000 feet feel like a depressing new normal these days—with some reports edging into truly alarming territory. The latest incident? An Air Canada flight from Jamaica to Toronto had to make an emergency stop in Orlando, Florida, after a Canadian man attempted to open the exit door while the plane was mid-air. According to the Fox News , Brandon Courneyea, who had tried to throw a pot of coffee at the flight crew before proceeding to grab the lever of the rear cabin door, was subsequently restrained with zip-ties until the plane landed safely and the FBI was called.

Thankfully, those on board were never in any real danger of the exit door flying open. But that doesn't make it any less terrifying the next time it happens—and it seems to happen every few months: Remember when a woman on a British Airways flight downed too many drinks and had to be restrained by her fellow passengers when she reached for the door handle? Or when a Lufthansa passenger, flying from Frankfurt to Belgrade, tried to open the exit door in 2015 and was restrained by members of the Serbian handball team who were also onboard? We do. But is the risk of a door flying off into the atmosphere ever a legitimate concern?

"It's 100 percent impossible ," says Bruce Rodger, president of Aero Consulting Experts and a 777 pilot at a major U.S. airline. "You can turn the handle and the door is not going to open."

Here's how it works: Airline cabins are pressurized so passengers can breathe at high altitudes. As a result, there's a difference between the air inside the airplane and outside. Because of that difference, a plane may have eight pounds or more of pressure pushing against every square inch of the plane, including the door. "If you look at that door and imagine how many pounds are pushing against it, you realize what it would take to open it," Rodger says. Passengers opening an exit are more likely to be confused or drunk than trying to cause harm.

no smoking sign and seatbelt sign illuminated on a plane

At much lower attitudes, such as just before landing, it might be theoretically possible to open a door, but you would probably need an army to do it. Near the ground, there may be a difference of two pounds per square inch, says Patrick Smith, a U.S. airline pilot. "[That] is still more than anyone can displace—even after six cups of coffee and the aggravation that comes with sitting behind a shrieking baby," Smith writes on his website, askthepilot.com .

Though these flights were never in danger, Rodger says neither passengers nor crew members overreacted. "You have a hostile passenger in an airplane," he says. "It is important you take control and get the passenger to a section of the airplane where she is not going to cause any harm."

Still, what worries airlines more is passengers opening doors on the ground. On runways and taxiways, anyone can open an exit, often by just turning a handle. That does not happen often in the United States, but has previously been a problem in developing Asian markets, where many travelers are first-time fliers. In December 2015, an XiamenAir passenger told local media he opened the door because he "just wanted fresh air."

The pain in Spain: Where are Brits not so welcome this summer?

  • Friday 19 April 2024 at 7:33pm

british tourist tries to open door on flight

Tourists are facing a backlash from residents in Tenerife as islanders say they are struggling to cope with the influx of visitors, ITV News Europe Editor James Mates reports

Spain is one of the most popular destinations for British tourists, but the country is feeling the backlash of the cheap flights and sunny climes as large numbers of visitors are causing big problems.

A number of provinces have taken matters into their own hands and are providing guidance - and in some case strict rules - for tourists visiting over the summer, as they try and tackle overcrowding and the problems that come with it.

Tourism represents nearly 12% of Spain’s economy but there has been growing pressure from locals for governments to put measures in place to reduce the number of visitors.

So which parts of Spain might not be so keen for Brits to descend this summer?

Canary Islands

Protestors in Tenerife started a hunger strike on April 12 as part of a wider campaign demanding the Canary Islands government tackle the effects of excess tourism in the region.

Hundreds of people linked arms to form a human chain to demonstrate against the building of an additional hotel and beach resort, as well as future projects aimed at attracting more tourists. The hunger strike was still underway on Wednesday at the time of writing.

The wider movement is called Canarias Se Agota, which means 'The Canaries Have Had Enough'.

In an Instagram post the organisation said the Canary Islands are "exhausted" because of the "excessive tourism" and the "lack of attention to the basic needs of the population".

Last year the then-mayor of Barcelona described tourism as a "great challenge" for the city, and suggested there needed to be a way to limit the number of people pouring in during holiday season.

Ada Colau limited the number of hotel beds in the city during her tenure, highlighting that the city needs homes so there is space for residents to live in the busy centre.

Her successor, Jaume Collboni, banned cruise ships from docking at the Muelle Barcelona Norte and the World Trade Centre docks, a mile away from the Gothic quarter, in October.

Now cruises must dock at the Moll d’Adossat pier, which is a 30-minute bus ride from the historic centre.

Meanwhile one neighbourhood went as far as to get a local bus route removed from Google and Apple Maps to discourage tourists from using it as it was often too busy for residents to fit onboard.

“We laughed at the idea at first,” a local activist, CĂ©sar SĂĄnchez, told the Guardian. “But we’re amazed that the measure has been so effective.”

Wider Catalonia region

Barcelona is the largest city in the Catalonia region, but authorities for the entire area are considering imposing water restrictions on tourists if domestic consumption does not decrease.

The Catalan government is considering a restriction of 100 litres of water per day per tourist for hotels for three months as it looks to tackle drought in the area.

According to Barcelona’s hotel guild, the average tourist to Barcelona in 2022 used some 163 litres per day, while the figure rose to over 240 litres for luxury hotels.

The limits for tourists would not include the water used to fill swimming pools.

Majorca has introduced a series of new rules over the last couple of years that aren't explicitly preventing tourists from enjoying the island, but do seek to weed out "drunken tourism".

A number of restaurants banned shirtless, costumed or football-shirt-wearing travellers, according to Juan Miguel Ferrer, the chief executive of Palma Beach.

Swimwear, trunks and novelty accessories bought from roadside vendors - such as gold chains - are also said to be banned.

"Since May 10, we’ve been suffering the arrival of large groups of tourists who are only looking to get drunk in the streets, or on the seafront or even on the beach,” Mr Ferrer said in 2022.

“You’re not going to come here in beach clothes or come straight from drinking in the streets."

Alicante introduced new noise-related restrictions in 2023 in response to influxes of tourists causing disruption for locals.

Rules had originally been put in place in 2019, but they were strengthened last year. The array of noises encompassed by the regulations include open air concerts, use of musical instruments on beaches, and shouting.

The local city council warned of hefty fines for anybody flouting the rules.

Money matters and passport pains

Post-Brexit, Brits are subject to the 'third states' rules Spain imposes on visitors from outside the European Union.

A traveller visiting Spain must "present proof of having sufficient financial means for the proposed stay", or at least the ability to legally obtain that money, according to the Spanish foreign ministry.

In 2023, the minimum amount required was $120 (ÂŁ97) per person per day, and the traveller had to have at least $1100 (ÂŁ885) or its equivalent in foreign currency regardless of the length of the stay.

Travellers can show they have enough money by presenting cash, travellers' cheques, a credit card with a bank account statement, an up-to-date bank book or similar. The ministry states that bank letters or online bank statements are not accepted.

Brits flying abroad are also being warned about post-Brexit passport rules , which have landed travellers with hefty fines.

Some families are finding themselves thousands of pounds out of pocket when they have been banned from boarding flights due to the rule changes.

When the UK was a member of the EU, British passports remained valid up to and including their expiry date for travel to other EU countries, but now passports need to be valid for valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU country you are visiting.

More details of the post-Brexit rules on passports can be found on the ITV News website .
