History [ edit ]

Travel Republic was founded in 2003 by university students Chris Waite, Paul Furner and Kane Pirie. [2] They desired to create a website where customers could book accommodation, flights, car transfers and airport parking in one place. The company specialises in enabling users to build their own holiday experience by combining different elements from the Travel Republic site. [3] [4]

Travel Republic is a travel search website acting as an agent only. The company is a member of ABTA [5] and holds an ATOL License [6] .

In January 2007 the company moved to its current headquarters in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. In the same year the company had an annual sales growth of 284.2% and topped the charts of The Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100 . [7]

In December 2011 the company was bought by Dnata World Travel which is a subsidiary of the Emirates Group, based in Dubai. [8]

In December 2015 Travel Republic launched a cruise service in partnership with Imagine Cruising . [9]

Operations & Technology [ edit ]

In January 2012, Travel Republic first introduced its mobile website, before expanding into mobile app on IOS in 2014. In 2015 the Android version of the app was launched.

The company aired its first YouTube ad on 17th January 2011 [10] . Their first television campaign 'The Last Click' aired in June 2014 [11] . With its success, Travel Republic continued to launch TV advertising campaigns. 'Welcome to the Travel Republic' was launched in January 2016 [12] before the latest campaign aired in December 2016 across UK and Ireland [13] . The campaign highlighted Travel Republic's slogan, 'Yours for the making'.

Controversy [ edit ]

In a case brought by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Travel Republic was accused of breaching ATOL regulations by selling unlicensed package holidays. Judge Nicholas Evans delivered the not-guilty verdict at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 10th November 2009. [14] In his judgement, Evans said the prosecution had failed to prove that Travel Republic did anything other than "sell components of holidays separately, but at the same time". [15] [16] '

Leading UK online travel agency Travel Republic has been bought by a travel agency subsidiary belonging to the parent of Middle East airline Emirates. According to Thomson Reuters the deal with Dnata World Travel was completed on December 29. No other details are included in the report including the value of the transaction. Dnata World Travel, which has acquired 100% of the Travel Republic shares, is described as a travel agency based in Dubai and a subsidiary of the Emirates Group. Rumours that Travel Republic was for sale have been circulating in the industry for months and in September managing director Kane Pirie told Travel Weekly the company was considering its options , including the potential for a float on the stock exchange.  The company was looking for investment to grow and Pirie denied that directors were looking to sell although he said financial advice had been sought from Rothschild after a number of interested parties had approached him. Travel Weekly was unable to contact Pirie for a comment on the sale, but he did leave a comment on the story (see below) responding claims from other posters that staff were unhappy about not being informed about the deal. He said: “Dnata will help accelerate growth. 2012 will be a busy year and we will be continuing to recruit and expand. The transaction is a positive achievement for all Travel Republicans.” Speculation linking Travel Republic with the UK’s two travel giants Tui Travel and Thomas Cook were wide of the mark, Travel Weekly understanding the main interest in acquiring the company had come from abroad. For the past six years Travel Republic has been the UK’s leading travel agency to emerge from the move towards dynamic packaging on the back of the rise of the lowcost airlines. This put the Kingston-Upon-Thames based firm on a collision course with regulators at the CAA which accused it of breaching Atol consumer protection regulations and criminal legal proceedings were started. However, Travel Republic and Pirie personally successfully fought the allegations in court and were found not guilty . The case against Pirie was dropped after a first magistrates court hearing found him not gulity and before the CAA appealed that judgement. The agency has recently been expanding across Europe and handles £400 million worth of transactions and two million customers every year. In December 2007 it was named the UK’s fastest growing privately-owned company having seen a 284% sales growth. The business was set up in 2003, the brainchild of two university friends; Paul Furner and Chris Waite. Pirie joined in 2005 as finance and operations director.

Travel Republic celebrates its 20 year anniversary with new brand identity

' src=

Travel Republic has revealed a new look for its ‘iconic’ brand across all its customer-facing activities, including its website  and social media channels. The new brand identity has been created to support the brand’s growth strategy and builds on the roll out of its award-winning Power to the People manifesto launched earlier this year, which underpins Travel Republic’s vision to become THE trusted brand for the working people known to deliver security and reliability at the right price.

Antonio Fellino, Travel Republic’s managing director, said: “The new look for the brand is all about supporting our driving ambition is to be the People’s Travel Champion, in every way from the value we offer through to the great service we deliver.  Through the new positioning ,  Viva Travel Republic, we celebrate the beliefs that make Travel Republic more than an online travel company, and a people’s holiday champion.

“Our strategy is centred on creating a stand-out customer experience, that drives long-standing brand preference.  We are already making great progress in this area, which is demonstrated through the recent increase in our Trustpilot rating, positioning us as ‘excellent’ with a score of 4.7/5.”

Fellino adds: “The new brand identity feels more modern and contemporary, rooted in its original form but with new life, and reflects a powerful symbol for our people flying the flag for travel.” Through research the new design has also shown to have more appeal to a wider audience, with better stand-out with a look that feels more exciting.

Kate Staniforth, Travel Republic’s Marketing Director says that the aim of the brand refresh is to drive affinity and preference for the brand by positioning it as the people’s champion, defending customers’ rights to a well-deserved holiday.

She says: “Alongside the Power to The People manifesto, the marketing strategy going forward will be rooted to more customer-centric energy and carpe diem attitude, capturing the excitement of booking a holiday, as well showcasing those precious holiday moments – because everyone deserves the right to a holiday that actually looks like the photo on a website.”

Travel Republic – heralded as the original online travel agent that disrupted the UK travel market back in 1983 – has helped over 20M passengers with their holidays over the last twenty years.  And, as a key part of the brand’s birthday celebrations this year, the brand has given more than £250K worth of free holidays to customers, as well as over £1M money-off vouchers and other money-saving offers, as a way to thank customers for their loyalty.

To help support and drive the future growth strategy of the business further, the brand has also added a number of senior positions to its leadership team in recent months.

Kate Staniforth joined the business as its new Head of Marketing and Sanjay Patel and Victoria McQuillian have both recently joined the brand’s leadership team as Head of Trading and Head of Partnerships and Business Development, respectively.

Staniforth has extensive experience of the UK travel industry having worked in the sector for nearly ten years and joins the UK’s most highly trusted and customer-rated online travel agent from Travelopia, where she held the position of Head of Marketing UK and Rest of World for their Sunsail and The Moorings brands for the last five years.

In her role at Travel Republic, Staniforth is responsible for setting the brand’s marketing strategy for the future, as well as leading all areas of the marketing mix, including brand and creative, direct marketing, social media, CRM and PR.

As Head of Trading, Patel is responsible for developing and driving the trading strategy of the Travel Republic websites to help the business achieve its commercial goals. His remit includes the day-to-day trading activities, yield management, sales centre and working with key stakeholders to drive conversion and acquisition.  Patel started his career in travel at Thomas Cook in a variety of Commercial Analytical and Ecommerce roles, Patel then worked for Olympic Holidays. In 2015 he relocated to Los Angeles where he worked for a number of Health & Wellness tech Start-ups managing ecommerce and digital marketing.

As Head of Partnerships and Business Development, McQuillan is responsible for exceeding revenue & margin targets through proactive partnerships, innovative marketing campaigns and product optimisation. McQuillan has a 20-year career history of working in travel, having started her career with the MyTravel Group before joining On the Beach.  She brings to Travel Republic extensive experience of working in ecommerce environments and managing strategic projects and partnership marketing.

Commenting on the appointments, Fellino concluded: “These new colleagues are already making a significant contribution to the business. Their combined expertise and experience are playing a pivotal role as we drive forward our transformation, ensuring we continue to deliver exceptional value to customers and further position the band as the People’s Travel Champion.”

Why Travelbag and Travel Republic have quit ABTA

who is travel republic owned by

Dnata Travel Group has confirmed that its two direct-sell brands Travelbag and Travel Republic have given up their ABTA membership.

It follows Lastminute.com’s decision to quit ABTA last week .

Dnata said its trade-only brands Gold Medal, Incredible Journeys, Pure Luxury and Cruise Plus will remain ABTA members.

The Emirates-owned business said removing the B2C brands Travelbag and Travel Republic from ABTA followed a review of its brand portfolio.

It added: “Collectively our fast-growing Gold Medal brand and B2B specialist brands account for a large part of our UK business, and these will continue to work closely with ABTA and benefit from their membership.

“Where our B2C brands are concerned, we feel that having the ATOL bonded protection, together with robust trust accounts, provides customers with the required reassurances they need.”

Travel Republic MD Antonio Fellino added: “In a year when we are celebrating our 20 th  year anniversary, we are delighted to have very recently seen our Trustpilot score move up to 4.7/5 and Travel Republic rated as excellent.

“This is great recognition that we are well and truly one of the most highly trusted, customer-rated online travel companies in the UK, and is a reflection of the hard work we continue to put in to deliver exceptional customer service to our customers.

“Travel Republic has the benefit of having exceptionally strong owners in the Emirates Group, as well as operating its own successful and robust trust account model.  Given this backdrop, we feel that customers receive a high level of reassurance that they are fully financially protected when they travel with us.”

An ABTA spokesperson said: “ABTA remains by far the most recognised and trusted travel association brand, which is why our annual renewal rate is typically over 95% and why we continue to welcome new members.

“It would be unusual for any membership body to have every member renew its annual membership. While we are, of course, disappointed if any member leaves, as a matter of policy we don’t comment on individual decisions.”

However, reputation management consultant and founder of Bloom Communications Phil Bloomfield said: “ABTA deserves a lot of respect for what it does for the travel industry, and the team works very hard behind the scenes to promote and protect its interests. But members are entitled to make their own choices about whether they’re getting value, and these, and other recent departures, beg the question as to whether – in its current form – the organisation is fit for purpose in a world which is significantly different to the one in which it was originally created.”

MD of dnata’s B2B businesses Simon Applebaum confirmed these brands would remain in ABTA.

“Serving travel agents is at the heart of our business, and through our long-lasting relationship with ABTA, we are delighted to continue as members.

“We believe the role of trusted travel advisor has never been more understood and valued and our partnership with ABTA allows us to engage with agents and other suppliers on best practice across a raft of areas from payments to compliance.”

Travel Republic launches CAA approved trust for “triple lock” financial protection

Dnata Travel owned OTA says it is offering customers “unrivalled” peace of mind

OTA Travel Republic claims to have put unrivalled financial guarantees for customers in place with new trust account protection adding to its Atol and Abta memberships.

The dnata Travel brand says the “triple lock” of protection will give bookers peace of mind as continued travel restrictions come in due to the COVID omicron variant.

The OTA said as people begin to regain confidence in travelling trust and financial protection is playing a more important role than ever as they decide whether to book.

The new independently operated secure trust account for package holiday customers has been approved by regulator the CAA and trustees of the Air Travel Trust, that backs the Atol scheme.

It guarantees that when a customer books a flight-inclusive package holiday, the money for their accommodation and transfers will be kept secure in a separate account.

This means it will be available so it can be promptly refunded in the event their holiday be cancelled.

Flight payments are not kept in trust but go straight to the airline on booking but theses are covered via separate insurance arrangement or firms opt to refund them themselves.

The additional security is part of Travel Republic’s Holiday Promise which also includes Covid Cover Plus for extra cancellation protection, a lowest price guarantee and round-the-clock In resort support to give customers real peace of mind.

Antonio Fellino, managing director of Travel Republic, said: “Our unique Triple Lock

Protection, included in our ‘Holiday Promise’, gives our customers real peace of mind when booking their holidays with us.

“Only recently, independent research commissioned by Abta showed ‘choosing trusted brands and operators’ to be the most important factor for Brits when planning a holiday.

“So we’re delighted to further strengthen the financial protection we can provide our customers, and be able to act quickly and flexibly to look after them should they be due a refund.”

Fellino added: “Over the last year, our team has gone above and beyond to make planning, booking and taking your holiday feel ‘worry-free’, despite the challenges.

“We’re proud that their efforts have helped us achieve an incredible score of 4.6/5 on Trustpilot with over 50k+ reviews from grateful customers.”

Rival OTA On The Beach pioneered a trust account model for OTAs in the UK with its own CAA approved scheme.

In a latest consultation on the future of Atol, the CAA has indicated its preference for a separation of customer monies from working cashflow with trust accounts seen increasingly as the solution.

On The Beach left Abta during the COVID pandemic over a disagreement about whether refunds are due for flights that were not cancelled by airlines.

Portrait of Sam Daly

I began today’s sales sweep by perusing REI’s sale section, where plenty of men’s summer shoes — like walking sneakers and hiking sandals — are deeply discounted. For everyday wear, Banana Republic is having a sale-on-sale that’s perfect for stocking up on all things denim. And finally, I found a Shark vacuum , beginner-friendly electric razor , and a Strategist-approved streaming stick all for under $100 apiece.

CosRX All About Snail Korean Skincare Set

This all-in-one set makes an excellent Mother’s Day gift for the snail mucin–curious mom.

Philips Norelco Shaver 3900 with Pop-up Trimmer, Charging Stand and Storage Pouch

This shaving kit features the Philips Norelco 3900, which is a slightly more advanced version of one of our favorite rotary  electric razors . The pivoting heads can be used both wet and dry, and it boasts a 60-minute battery life akin to much more expensive models.

Dreamegg White Noise Machine

Dreamegg’s handy portable sound machine is just $19 when you apply the on-site coupon. It has 21 sounds to choose from, automatically shuts off after 30, 60, or 90 minutes, and is small enough to toss in a  diaper bag to take with you on the go.

Shark 2-in-1 Cordless and Handheld Vacuum Ultracyclone System

This slim stick vacuum from Shark is just $100 today. It can convert into a handheld vacuum with the press of a button, and it comes with two extra nozzles so you can suck up dirt from hard-to-reach places.

Google Chromecast with Google TV (HD)

Several Strategist staffers (myself included) prefer Google’s Chromecast as their streaming stick of choice. It’s easy to set up and costs less than (and has just as many features as) many of its competitors.

Treasure & Bond Sporty Drawstring Crop Pants

I love the large drawstring and front seams on these cotton-blend lounge pants. They come in six colors, and the discount varies from 30 to 60 percent off depending on which color you select.

Adidas Superlite Ankle Socks

You actually do need more socks, and these are just $3.50 per pair.

Chaco Z/2 Classic Sandals - Men's

Today’s best deal is these Chaco hiking sandals , which are over 70 percent off when you buy them in this not-too-loud navy print.

Saucony Triumph 20 Road-Running Shoes - Men's

REI’s also got quite a cache of sneakers on sale, like these Saucony shoes for marathon training and errand running.

Hoka Arahi 6 Road-Running Shoes - Men's

I also spotted these fun turquoise Hokas, which one interviewee from our 1,000-senior survey recommended. “I’ve had two hip replacements and have to be really careful about cushioning,” she said. “I find that they really do the trick. Hokas keep me healthy.”

Banana Republic the Straight Jean

Over at Banana Republic, all already-on-sale styles are an additional 20 percent off at checkout. Spring hasn’t truly arrived until you’ve broken out your light-wash denim.

Banana Republic Reign Denim Shirt

A subtly faded button-up (to wear on its own or complete your Canadian tuxedo).

Hay Été Duvet Cover

Our best striped duvet cover is half-off at Design Within Reach. ( Secret Strategist subscribers will recognize it from last week’s send.) It’s only on sale in yellow in the full/queen size, but there are a few more colors to choose from if you’re in the market for a twin-size option.

The Strategist is designed to surface the most useful, expert recommendations for things to buy across the vast e-commerce landscape. Some of our latest conquests include the best acne treatments , rolling luggage , pillows for side sleepers , natural anxiety remedies , and bath towels . We update links when possible, but note that deals can expire and all prices are subject to change.

Owensboro firefighters strengthening bond with sister city in the Czech Republic

Olomouc

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WFIE) - Owensboro is marking a significant milestone in their 30-year history with Olomouc, their sister city in the Czech Republic.

The city says they are sending ten fire officials from Owensboro and the surrounding area to Olomouc as part of a Firefighter Exchange program.

The trip, which has been organized by the Owensboro Sister Cities and Regions Board (OSCAR), aims to foster international cooperation and enhance firefighting capabilities through shared learning and training experiences.

“Our main goal for this exchange is to help save lives,” said OSCAR board member Katherine Zbořil. “By opening our minds to new operations and techniques, we can broaden our tools in the use for saving lives. If even one life is saved from something we learn in Olomouc, that would be a priceless measure of success.”

During their stay, the delegation will deepen their understanding of firefighting practices and procedures in the Czech Republic.

Officials say highlights include immersive tours of Olomouc fire departments, collaborative planning meetings for future training programs and participation in cultural activities in Olomouc and Prague.

The delegation comprises of representatives from the Owensboro Fire Department, Daviess County Fire Department, Airport Sorgho Fire Department and the Fire Academy of Kentucky.

The group will embark on their journey to the Czech Republic on April 22.

Arizona ghost town: Gold King Mine in Jerome is a hidden gem

who is travel republic owned by

Arizona’s strangest museum — or maybe just its rustiest — clings to a hill high above the Verde Valley. It looks like several garages exploded. Or like the ruins of an ancient junkyard have been unearthed by archaeologists.

Shaggy, disheveled and full of history, Gold King Mine and Ghost Town has the power to captivate families for hours at a time.

Sitting a mile north of Jerome, Gold King Mine harbors an assortment of ramshackle buildings, a menagerie of friendly animals and a sprawling collection of rusted machinery that forever teeters between ruin and redemption.

What you can see at Gold King Mine in Jerome

This open-air museum preserves the clanking metal skeleton of a hardworking industrial era spread across the site. Approximately 100 vehicles line the sloping pathways.

Trucks, cars, buses, tractors, bulldozers, cranes and some conveyances that defy description are everywhere you look. These include some incredible finds like a 1902 Studebaker electric carriage, one of only two known to exist.

Tools and equipment from wrenches to chainsaws to a towering stamp mill to prehistoric washing machines that look like tubs with teeth are scattered about the grounds of this ghost town that sprang up by accident.

Gold King Mine Jerome history

In 1890, the Haynes Copper Company sunk a 1,200-foot shaft into a mountain that was practically made of copper. They whiffed. Astride one of the richest copper deposits in history, they couldn’t find the green ore.

But sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good. They struck a vein of gold instead and the town of Haynes developed around the diggings.

Haynes never exactly thrived but it held on for years. It had its own post office from 1908 through 1922. Eventually the gold ran out and residents scattered. Then in 1981, this scarred slope that still wore the derelict remnants of its past was discovered by Don and Terry Robertson. It proved to be a perfect setting for what they had in mind.

Don Robertson was born on an Iowa farm, seemingly with a wrench in his hand. By age 3 he was taking apart and rebuilding his tricycle. Robertson continued his insatiable tinkering with bicycles, tractors and finally, cars and trucks, on his way to becoming a master mechanic. He developed a fascination with mining equipment and began collecting pieces that interested him.

Now with room to spread out on the hillsides above Jerome, the collecting intensified. Vintage vehicles soon joined the antique tools and mining paraphernalia. Before he passed away in 2016, Robertson used to say that he collected the things that built this country. He wanted to preserve them to honor that work ethic and sense of accomplishment.

That’s how an intriguing tourist attraction was born.

Things to do at Gold King Mine

Now run by the Robertsons' daughter, Jeannie Leffew and her husband Mike, Gold King Mine and Ghost Town continues attracting visitors from around the world. It retains some of the same appeal as Route 66, comforting and nostalgic, harkening back to simpler times.

Pathways wind among the weathered buildings and mechanical treasures spread over the terraced hillside. Original structures remain from Haynes, including a boarding house built in 1909.

Others have been salvaged from different locations and stand as furnished exhibits with creaking floors and faded signs, offering a glimpse of history. There’s a one-room schoolhouse, a miner’s cabin, assay office, town laundry, shoe repair shop, gas station and “painless” dentist office, which housed early Jerome dentists and actually resembles a torture chamber bristling with frightening instruments.

A turn-of-the-century sawmill still fills orders for new homes in the Verde Valley, cutting planks with the 1914 Witte engine powering the antique Belsaw. Watching the mill operator slicing through logs is noisy poetry in motion. The sound of the hammer rings out from the blacksmith shop where the smithy offers demonstrations, usually on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.

Yet everything comes to a halt if “Big Bertha” fires up. The massive Chicago Pneumatic three-cylinder generator dates to about 1930 and was originally used at the mine in Bagdad, Arizona. It belches flames and booms like a thunderclap when turned on, and the sound echoes down the mountain. Big Bertha is operated only by request, and has a $25 fee for fuel.

There’s also a petting zoo that includes Bella the pig, goats Bonnie and Clyde, donkeys and rabbits. Bags of animal feed can be purchased in the gift shop. Chickens have their own coop but are usually busy roaming the grounds, scratching in the dirt beneath old Packards and flatbed Fords.

Can you pan for gold in Jerome AZ?

Guests at Gold King Mine can pan for gold ($18) or gems ($12) under the guidance of knowledgeable staff.

What's ahead for Gold King Mine and Ghost Town

Don Robertson may be gone but his legacy continues to entertain and educate thousands of visitors each year. Gold King Mine provides a roadmap to a pre-internet world, one without software, just stylish hardware.

This mountain of metal is crowned by an array of metal machines — highlighting the classic architecture of vehicles built to endure with their swooping curves, rounded fenders and eye-pleasing lines.

But don’t expect shine and polish. These are not gleaming car show dandies. This fleet ages naturally in the Arizona sun, wearing a warm patina as a badge of honor. Yet surprisingly, many still run. That’s another testament to Robertson’s lifelong skill.

The Leffews continue to expand the collection Robertson started. They’re always on the lookout for donations of tools, vehicles and equipment that help tell the story of American labor. They also hope to add additional interactive experiences and possibly regular events to the property, updating while maintaining the original character.

Visitation increases each year as gearheads, history buffs, photographers and families drive up the mountain to Jerome, and then continue a mile farther to the little outpost of Gold King Mine and Ghost Town. Here, beneath the shade of the paradise trees amid a cluster of rickety buildings — where chickens cross the road but the cars don’t — time slows down. Here they can spend a few peaceful moments connecting to a rustic piece of Americana.

Gold King Mine is the kind of place that’s becoming harder to find in a fast-paced world. Nice to know it’s waiting just up the hill.
