How to Get a Refund If You’re Too Sick to Fly

No matter how excited you are for a trip, sometimes, life happens : You’re too sick to fly or—in today’s world of the COVID-19 pandemic—you suspect you might be. So what’s an under-the-weather or cautious traveler to do?

Step 1: Judge your sickness.

Turns out, there actually are hard and fast rules for when you shouldn’t hit the skies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for example, recommends those with symptoms of COVID-19 do not travel.

Generally, you should also bag a trip if you have a fever higher than 100 degrees Fahrenheit and symptoms such as coughing or sneezing, says William Schaffner , M.D., a professor of infectious diseases at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

“Of all the infections that are acquired on public conveyances, I think respiratory infections are the most common,” he says. And coughing and sneezing give exhalations more energy, which means you’re more likely to spread germs or virus over a larger distance than if you simply had the sniffles.

In fact, being within just two rows of someone sick can increase your risk of coming down with whatever they have, some research finds. The longer the flight, the more likely it is that you’ll infect others.

The CDC also recommends that everyone who travels is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. “The vaccines are very, very effective in preventing infection and keeping people out of the hospital with COVID,” says Dr. Schaffner.

Additionally, the organization warns against travel if you’ve recently had surgery, a heart attack, or a stroke—these can increase your risk of blood clots and heart-related issues. In any of these instances, you have plausible reason to plead your case.

Step 2: Know the rules.

Today in the U.S., airlines essentially all across the board (minus some low-cost carriers and basic economy fares) have permanently gotten rid of change fees, says Scott Keyes, founder of Scott’s Cheap Flights . That means that usually, if you’re booked in main economy or higher, you can change your travel dates after you book without paying a penalty beyond any fare differences. (Southwest has had this policy for decades.) So while rebooking for another time isn't the same as a refund, it is often an option if you’re too sick to fly right now.

It’s also worth noting some key policy updates in the world of flying and flexibility. Just recently, for example, United announced that passengers booked in basic economy can now upgrade to main economy (something that wasn’t allowed in the past) and thereby be able to switch a flight without having to pay a penalty. “It's a little convoluted,” says Keyes. “But it’s one way that folks will be able to have flexibility if they are not able to travel for some reason.”

Also important to remember: If an airline ever cancels or significantly changes your flight, by law you’re eligible for a full cash refund (or you can switch to more convenient flight). So if your flight gets changed big time and you’re feeling under the weather anyway, know that flight schedule changes are actually an opportunity to either get a refund or get a much more convenient flight, says Keyes.

Step 3: Hop on the horn—with your doctor and then your airline.

If you are indeed a sick passenger and need to cancel your flight (read: you can’t change your dates), try to do so before the original scheduled departure time, says Brett Snyder, president of Cranky Concierge air travel assistance . If you don’t cancel in time, you lose the ability to use that credit toward future travel.

Generally, you are going to need a doctor’s note or a medical letter proving illness. From there, it’s worth giving your airline a call. While a full refund for being sick might be unlikely (a travel credit would be a more realistic hope), Keyes notes that “airline customer service agents are empowered to make decisions on whether they grant what you're asking for or not.” And with the pandemic, you might have a higher chance of leniency than you would have pre-pandemic, he says.

If you don’t get what you hope for the first time around, call again, he suggests. There are thousands of airline representatives. “Don't just assume, ‘well, I've got to eat the cost of the ticket.’ Take your chances and call; maybe you'll get lucky,” Keyes says.

In fact, that advice holds for any situation you’re in with travel, whether you’re within the 24-hour cancellation time frame , don’t have a doctor’s note, or just feel stuck—it’s always worth reaching out and trying to get what you can.

Step 4: Think ahead.

Find yourself stuck with a fee? The next time you’re booking an expensive trip, consider Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) travel insurance , which could reimburse you if you get sick.

“CFAR tends to be something people buy aspirationally,” says Keyes. “But it’s not a ‘get out of jail free card.’” It might, though, give you a 75 percent refund on a flight price if your reason for not flying is covered, for example.

“Policies vary among insurance companies and products,” says Keyes. So just be sure to read the fine print of any plan you buy to make sure you understand what you're being insured for.

As SEPTA continues to urge all non-essential workers to stay off mass transit amid the coronavirus pandemic, riders have a way to get refunds for unused key card passes.

Anyone seeking refunds for unused passes on their key cards or monthly regional rail permits should review SEPTA's credit policy for transportation passes or call the SEPTA Key Customer Call Center at 1-855-567-3782.

SEPTA also advised any riders who use autoload to turn it off if their upcoming travel needs are uncertain. You can access your autoload settings here. Riders can reinstate their autoload once normal travel resumes by going to their online key card account.

SEPTA has continued service on a reduced schedule for essential workers. Starting Thursday, SEPTA will operate on a Lifeline Service Schedule with limited lines and routes. All riders will be asked to wear masks or other facial coverings, consistent with new CDC guidelines. SEPTA also issued masks to all frontline employees.

Access to stations will be limited and SEPTA police will engage customers to make sure they're traveling for essential purposes.

What is Travel Bank?

Travel Bank is an easy-to-use account where you accumulate and save credit from non-refundable ticket changes, cancellations or service credits. These credits are kept in your Travel Bank until you use them to pay for new flights with WestJet, excluding WestJet Vacation packages and service fees.

Travel Bank is not an actual physical bank. It’s more like a store credit.

Why do I need an account for Travel Bank?

To receive a credit, you need a WestJet Rewards account.

A Travel Bank requires a WestJet Rewards account and ID in order to be linked to you, the Travel Bank owner. With an account you can  sign in  online to view your Travel Bank balance.

When will I see the credit in my Travel Bank?

This depends on how your cancellation was processed. If you cancelled with an agent in our contact centre or online in Manage Trips, you will see the balance in your account immediately.  Sign in to view your balance.

You can use your Travel Bank credit to  book new flights  as soon as you see it in  your account . If your flight was cancelled due to a schedule change and you do not see the correct balance, please  contact us .

Do Travel Bank credits expire? If so, can I get an extension?

Travel Bank credits from changed or cancelled flights can be used to pay for flights up to 12 months from the date your flight was cancelled.  Sign in  to your WestJet account to check your credit expiry date. Travel can occur after the expiry date. Regular Travel Bank credit can be extended for 12 months one time only for a fee.  Please phone our contact centre to request an extension. This does not apply to an already extended credit. Expired credits cannot be extended.

How do I use my Travel Bank credits?

Travel Bank credits can be used to pay for WestJet flights and select fees such as kennels and seat selection, but not WestJet Vacation packages, excess baggage or change fees.

  • You can apply credits to one or many flights until the balance is $0
  • There are no blackout dates

You can pay for new flights with your Travel Bank credit online, through the call centre or at the airport.

To use your Travel Bank credit when  booking online :

  • Sign in  to your WestJet Rewards account.
  • Select your flights and continue to the payment step.
  • When you’re signed in your Travel Bank balance will appear with the option to apply the credit to your purchase.
  • Choose to apply all, or a portion of your Travel Bank balance toward the cost of your flights. Any remaining cost can be paid with WestJet dollars or a credit card.

Can I transfer my Travel Bank credits?

Yes, Travel Bank credits can be transferred to another WestJet Reward’s account upon request through our  contact centre .

Can I use my Travel Bank credits to pay for travel for another guest?

Yes, this is easy to do.

To apply a Travel Bank credit to another guest's flight:

  • Sign in  to your WestJet Rewards account
  • Select the desired flights, fill in the guest details for the person travelling and continue to the payment step
  • If there is a balance in your Travel Bank, the option to apply the credit to the travelling guest’s flight will appear as a payment option

Airbnb is updating its cancellation-and-refund policy to include "unexpected major events" such as natural disasters.

The US-based vacation-rental company announced the update on Thursday in an online press release. The Major Disruptive Events Policy — formerly called the "Extenuating Circumstances Policy" — will go into effect on June 6 .

The new policy will include "declared public health emergencies and epidemics," but that does not include endemic diseases such as the flu, and it does not cover COVID-19.

It will also cover government-issued travel restrictions, major essential-utility outages, military actions, and natural disasters.

Though Airbnb does cover natural disasters, it notes that "weather or natural conditions that are common enough to be foreseeable in a given location — for example, hurricanes occurring during hurricane season in Florida — are covered only when they result in another Event covered by this Policy that prevents completion of the reservation, such as a mandatory evacuation order or large-scale outage of essential utilities."

Airbnb added that its new policy will allow guests to cancel reservations mid-trip if the cancellation stems from one of the identified coverage points. Guests will receive a refund for nights they didn't stay at the rental without fees, while hosts will bypass consequences.

Regarding hosts, Airbnb's policy will ask that they cancel guest reservations without additional fees if the rental is "uninhabitable." Additionally, the policy will allow hosts to cancel reservations without any fees or consequences .

There are also certain things the policy doesn't cover, including unexpected illnesses and jury duty. Since the cancellation-and-refund policy doesn't cover all emergencies, Airbnb urges guests to invest in travel insurance.

"The changes to this policy, including its new name, were made to create clarity for our guests and Hosts and ensure it's meeting the diverse needs of our global community," Juniper Downs, the global head of community policy and partnerships at Airbnb, said in the press release. "Our aim was to clearly explain when the policy applies to a reservation, and to deliver fair and consistent outcomes for our users. These updates also bring the policy in line with industry standards."

Representatives for Airbnb did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Airbnb's cancellation-and-refund policy update comes after it banned indoor security cameras this month . Hosts were previously allowed to use indoor cameras if disclosed in the property's online listing, but the ban — which starts April 30 — will affect rentals worldwide.

Indoor security cameras were a contested topic between hosts and guests. While hosts said they installed cameras to protect their properties, some vacationers voiced surveillance concerns.

Ryanair under fire for ‘wallet’ refunds policy.

The budget airline has been accused of making it more difficult than necessary to get refunds for flights cancelled during the pandemic.

A campaign group has called for an investigation into Ryanair’s Wallet refunds policy over possible breaches of consumer law.

The airline introduced a policy of automatically paying refunds into a ‘Wallet’ attached to customers’ Ryanair accounts last year. Customers then needed to request to withdraw funds from their Wallet to their credit or debit card, or bank account.

Which? believes this creates an extra step in the refund process, which could result in fewer people claiming their money back in cash.

One passenger who had problems withdrawing funds from her Wallet threatened legal action against Ryanair unless it offered her a refund. She told Which? she believed the airline had deliberately made it an “intimidating process” for customers to withdraw cash “in the hope that many people simply give up”.

Which? is calling on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to step in to investigate what it says is a potential breach of consumer protection law and inform passengers of their rights if an airline cancels their flight.

Any traveller whose flight is cancelled by their airline within 14 days of departure is entitled to rebooking or a full cash reimbursement within seven days (unless re-routing is offered in certain circumstances).

Airlines are required to obtain travellers’ signed agreement if they wish to provide a voucher or ‘other services’ as an alternative. But Which? said Ryanair doesn’t appear to give passengers a choice as to whether their refunds are issued into the Wallet.

The consumer champion said the scheme is the latest example of the budget carrier potentially skirting around the rules . Ryanair ranked bottom of a recent Which? survey of passenger refund satisfaction .

In October 2021, Which? asked more than 1,100 passengers about their experiences with disrupted flights since March 2020. Only 47% of Ryanair customers said they were satisfied with how it handled the issue, with one in five telling Which? it took them more than a month to get a refund.

The group has shared its findings with the CAA and is urging the regulator to investigate Ryanair’s Wallet refund policy. It is also calling on the Department for Transport to give the CAA greater powers to more effectively enforce the law, including the ability to fine airlines that break the rules.

‘Forcing customers to jump through hoops’

Rory Boland, editor of Which? Travel, said: “Ryanair is showing what scant regard it holds for its customers yet again by forcing them to jump through hoops to get what they are legally owed. The airline should change its policy to offer cash refunds as default.

“Which? investigations have repeatedly shown that some airlines are prepared to flout the law when it comes to refunds and consumer rights, with little fear of facing any consequences. The CAA must step in to investigate the issue, and take action against Ryanair if it confirms the policy is breaching the law. It is crucial the CAA is given the powers it needs to effectively hold airlines to account – including fining powers.”

A spokesperson for the CAA said: “The Civil Aviation Authority has been clear that consumers owed a refund should only accept airline credit or vouchers where it is in their interest to do so and that it is important that consumers are given a clear option to request a cash refund without unnecessary barriers.

“We regularly monitor the approaches that airlines take to complying with their obligations and review any evidence provided to us about how they meet their obligations.”

‘Complete control over refunds’

A spokesperson for Ryanair said: “Customers are clearly informed in our Refund Hub that refunds are issued via the Wallet. It provides customers with complete control over their refunds, by giving them immediate access to their Wallet balance (for use on future bookings) and the ability to withdraw their refund in cash in just one click. All passengers’ rights and entitlements under consumer protection law continue to be fully respected.”
