2024 Volkswagen Atlas

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has enough room to bring along everybody and all their gear. It's available with either three rows of seating or two rows in the Cross Sport configuration. Depending on how you configure it, the Suburban can tow up to 8,300 pounds, enough for the average camper. It also comes with driver-assistance features like lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist.

2024 Kia Carnival

The 2024 Kia Carnival makes a strong case for the classic family minivan as the ultimate road-trip vehicle, especially with pricing that's among the most affordable on this list. It comes with a good list of standard safety features for long drives, including lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring.

The interior is upholstered with easy-to-clean materials, and all three rows have enough room for adults, though the third row has a bit less legroom than the first two. It also has lots of cargo space, even with all three rows in use. If you don't need the last row for passengers, it folds flat into the floor for even more cargo space. 2024 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

If your road-trip budget allows for a little luxury. the 2024 Genesis G90 delivers. It has a capable V6 and an optional mild-hybrid powertrain that improves acceleration when passing on the highway. The available air suspension makes long drives a dream, and the extensive list of standard safety features–including adaptive cruise control and a head-up display–eases the tedium of driving.

The Nappa leather interior wraps the road tripper in luxury, and both rows of seating are comfortable for adults. The trunk is large enough for several suitcases, and it opens automatically as you approach. The G90 also has one of the longest powertrain warranties in the business.

2025 Ram 1500

If your road trip plan involves a camper or boat, you'll want to look into the 2025 Ram 1500 . When properly equipped, it can tow up to 11,580 pounds. As with most pickups, you can configure the 1500 in whatever way works for you, with bed, cab and powertrain options in addition to trim levels and packages to add on.

All of the available body styles have a spacious, high-quality interior. Quite a few safety features are standard, including stop-and-go adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert. The infotainment system got an upgrade for the 2025 model year, which means even more available features, including three screen sizes, three sound systems, and a long list of available tech features.

Road Trip Car Characteristics

Passenger space: People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.

Cargo space: At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.

Finding the perfect road-trip vehicle means striking a balance among many factors, such as front and rear seat comfort, space, fuel economy, ride quality, and noise. It also should be a vehicle that’s easy to live with when you’re not traveling, and with strong safety and reliability. That is a lot to ask of a single vehicle, but our analysts have scrutinized our test and survey data to find the best road-trip vehicles in 10 popular categories.

To find the standouts, we considered all those factors among models that meet the stringent criteria to be recommended by Consumer Reports . Each vehicle below scores at least average in those factors, plus they provide 500 miles or more of highway cruising range, based on our fuel-economy tests. They also have a sizable trunk or cargo area, based on our measurements. Because of the qualification needed to make a great long-distance runner, we omitted subcompact SUVs and small cars. Step 1: The key need-to-knows about renting a car in Ireland

1. The cheapest option is never all it seems

Regardless of whether you use a comparison site or go direct via one of the Irish car rental companies, the cheapest option is never all it seems.

The cheapest price always means the lowest level of insurance has been selected.

2. Insurance is deliberately confusing

The main issue people have when renting a car in Ireland is insurance.

As a rule of thumb, you’re generally best-off selecting the highest level of cover. There are 3 main types of insurance:

Third Party: A non-optional legal requirement
CDW: Reduces the amount you’re liable to pay if your rental is damaged or stolen
Super CDW: Can often reduce your excess to zero
Full coverage: Available with Discover Cars

3. You’ll have to leave a deposit

The vast majority of people looking to rent a car in Ireland will have a security deposit placed on their credit card.

How much : I have seen this as high as €2,900
My issue : You only find the exact amount at the pick-up counter
When it’s ‘released’ : Usually within 4 working days of dropping the car back
Make sure : Your card has enough of a limit to cover your trip

4. There are many policies and requirements

I’ll go into these requirements for renting a car in Ireland in detail further down, but here are the key points:

Age : You need to be 21+
Northern Ireland : You’ll be charged a fee for entering
Milage limits : They can be tricky if you have a long Ireland itinerary
Fuel policy : Always avoid ‘Collect Full, Return Empty’

5. Compare prices for the best rate

The best way to rent a car in Ireland is to see how the various companies compare. I have been recommending Discover Cars for the last 2 years and have have nothing but positive feedback (they have a 4.6/5 rating on Trustpilot from 160,000+ reviews).

Step 2: See if you fit the car rental requirements

Before you start looking at the ins and outs of how to rent a car in Ireland, you need to understand if you can actually rent one.

While there are several requirements for driving in Ireland , the one that tends to cause the most confusion is around age.

Requirement 1: A valid drivers licence and ID

You need a valid ID and drivers licence for renting a car in Ireland. Here’s the key info:

EU and EEA member states : You can drive in Ireland once the licence is valid
UK licences : These are valid if you live in the UK and are visiting Ireland
USA + other licences : Once you hold a national driving licence and an international driving permit you can drive in Ireland

Requirement 2: Age restrictions

If you’re under 21: Can’t rent a car in Ireland
If you’re between 21 and 25: Some companies will rent to you but you’ll pay a hefty daily surcharge
If you’re over 75: You can rent a car but may need to provide specific documentation

Requirement 3: Credit cards and debit cards

Some companies allow you to rent a car in Ireland without a credit card.

For example, Enterprise allows you to use a Debit Card , but only at non-airport locations.

Many Irish rental car companies won’t accept debit card and require you to have a credit card with you when you arrive at the counter.

Step 3: Understanding car rental insurance in Ireland

Car rental insurance is the main issue for those renting a car in Ireland. It’s also what can turn what looks like a good deal to a money burner in seconds.

However, once you know what to look out for, there’ll be no surprises when you reach the counter.

1. C ar Hire Excess (you need to understand this first)

Understanding Car Hire Excess is hugely important when renting a car in Ireland.

This is a set amount which Irish car rental companies WON’T COVER if you have to make a claim.

For example, your rental will include basic insurance in the price (see point 2). However, if you damage the car, you are liable to pay a fixed amount towards the damage.

2. Third Party Liability Insurance is a legal requirement

Third-Party Cover is included, by law , in your car rental price.

In a nutshell, Third Party Liability Insurance is the minimum level of cover that’s legally allowed to drive a car in Ireland:

It covers : Damage to someone else’s car/property and any injury you cause to the person
It doesn’t cover : Any medical or legal costs you incur along with any damage to the car you’re driving

3. Collision Damage Waiver

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is generally where a good chunk of confusion is caused when renting a car in Ireland.

CDW is additional insurance coverage that you can take out from your Ireland car rental company or via a third party.

It’s optional and the cost is charged on a per-day basis. If you buy this, make sure to check the excess fee (i.e. the amount you’ll have to pay if there’s an accident).

What it does: It reduces the amount you’re liable to pay if your rental is damaged or stolen
If you decline: Most rental companies will make you sign a contract to say you’re fully responsible for the value of the car
Credit card cover: Some credit cards offer this level of cover, but you have to be 100% sure that 1, it covers you to drive in Ireland and that 2, the rental company accepts it

4. Super CDW and full coverage

Third Party and CDW cover you for major incidents, however, you’ll still be liable for minor ones .

Super CDW is offered by car rental companies in Ireland and it can often reduce your excess to zero (i.e. you won’t need to pay anything in the event of an accident).

If you book via DiscoverCars add their ‘Full Coverage’. This covers the excess so, if something happened to the car, you wouldn’t need to pay anything (always read the Ts&Cs).

5. What I do

When I need a rental, I book via DiscoverCars and add the full coverage for peace of mind.

When booking, I’ll always check if CDW is included (it’s listed under the photo of the car).

Step 4: What to check when you’re booking

I realise that our Ireland car rental guide might seem long winded, but it genuinely only contains the need-to-know info.

So, with that in mind, the next section looks at some the key things you need to be aware of when you book your car rental in Ireland.

1. Time spent reading the Ts&Cs is worth its weight in gold

If there’s one tip you take from this guide to renting a car in Ireland it’s to read the Ts&Cs of your rental agreement before you sign and actually understand what’s being said.

Many (not all) people that have negative experiences with rental companies do so due to a lack of research.

2. The pick up point (plan it around your itinerary)

When planning a trip to Ireland , the itinerary is key. Even more so if you plan on getting around Ireland in a rental.

Have a clear route planned and then ensure the pick-up location (e.g. Shannon) fits with your starting point.

If you follow an itinerary from our massive road trip library you’ll get tips on when you will/won’t need a car.

Book in advance to save cash: As tends to be the case with many hotels and airlines, the cost to rent a car in Ireland tends to skyrocket when you book closer to the date of collection.

3. The provider rating

If you use Discover Cars when hiring a car in Ireland, always look at the rating next to the provider.

Personally, I’d only rent from a provider with an 8+ review score.

4. The Northern Ireland charge

Many car rental companies charge you if you enter Northern Ireland and they track this via the car’s GPS (see our guide to Ireland vs Northern Ireland if you’re confused).

You need to check if:

It’s a per-crossing charge (i.e. you’re charged every time you cross the border)
It’s a one off charge (i.e. you pay a sum in advance)

5. The fuel policy

When it comes to fuel, the best way to rent a car in Ireland is to choose the ‘Collect Full, Return Full’ policy.

If you don’t, you’ll be hit with excess fuel costs when the rental company tops it up themselves. You’ll always find a petrol/diesel station close to your drop-off location.

6. The toll policy

Ireland has a number of toll roads scattered across the country. All but one is your standard toll – i.e. you approach the toll and you can pay with cash or card.

Dublin’s M50 motorway is what’s known as a ‘free-flow tolling system’ . So, there isn’t a toll booth – your car reg is recorded and a charged is placed against it.

Some Ireland car rentals come with a ‘toll tag’ which covers this charge, but you need to check the Ts&Cs.

7. The transmission (i.e. manual vs automatic)

The majority of rental cars in Ireland are manual (AKA ‘shift’).

Now, while automatic cars are available from most companies, they’re not in wide supply .

If you can only drive an automatic, make sure that you book well in advance to avoid disappointment and hefty rental fees.

8. Airport collection fees

Yep, if you’re renting a car in Dublin Airport there’s a charge of €22 (cost may change).

This won’t be listed in the fee that you’re quoted online – it’s added when you pick up the car and it’s payable upon arrival at the airport.

9. Clarity on what’s been paid and what’s left to pay

When you’re booking your rental online, BE VERY CLEAR on what’s included in the price you’re paying online and WHAT STILL HAS TO BE PAID when you arrive at the counter on the day.

Personally, I tend to go for the ‘pre-paid’ option (i.e. paying in advance).

The only unknown then is how much of a security deposit will be held on your card.

10. Understanding the extras

The cost of extras can make renting a car in Ireland very expensive.

This is where you need to be savvy with your research phase – get out a pen and paper/spreadsheet and compare the different costs .

For example, adding a car seat could cost you an extra €40 while adding an additional driver could cost twice that.

Step 5: What to do when collecting your car hire in Ireland

It’s at this point that, if you didn’t thoroughly review the Ts&Cs of your booking, that you can be hit with unexpected fees that’ll ensure your trip is started off on the wrong note.

Here are some other things to do when picking up your car hire in Ireland:

1. Inspect the car in detail

One of two things will happen when you’re handed the keys to the car.

Most likely: You’ll be given a few pages detailing the rental agreement and explaining the damage present on the car
Occasionally happens: The person dealing with your booking will accompany you to your car.

If you’ve been handed a sheet that has a diagram that shows the damage on the car, verify that it’s all correct. Then ensure that there’s no unaccounted for damage INSIDE OR OUT.

2. Take photos

For added insurance when renting a car in Ireland, take out your phone and photograph all damage that’s currently inside and outside of the car.

This ensures that there’s no issue when you’re dropping the car back.

3. Who ya gonna call

Hopefully you’ll have no issues with your car hire in Ireland, but I’ve heard of countless breakdowns and accidents, both minor and major, over the years.

It’s worth knowing exactly who to call in each situation. If someone has been injured, call the Gardaí (the Irish police) on 999 or 112.

4. Fuel type

Hopefully this goes without saying, but you need to be clear about whether the car takes petrol or diesel.

Now, the chances are they’ll have a sticker with ‘D’ or ‘P’ above the tank to indicate petrol or diesel.

Keep in mind that many Ireland car rental insurance policies don’t cover you sticking the wrong fuel in the rental.

Step 6: What to do when dropping off your rental

The final step in our renting a car in Ireland guide is the drop-off and it’s worth being vigilant to the very end.

I’ve heard of PLENTY of people that have dropped a vehicle back to one of the Irish car rental companies only to discover a random charge on their card weeks later.

1. Checking the car

A member of the rental company will check the rental car over inside and out for any damage that wasn’t present when you picked it up.

If the employee disputes something that was already there when you collected the car, whip out your phone and show them the picture you took upon collection.

Keep in mind that the condition of the vehicle needs to be confirmed by the employee and signed. Ensure that you get a receipt before leaving.

2. Returning the car outside of working hours

If you have to drop your car back outside of normal working hours, check with the company in advance to ensure you’re fully aware of the process.

There is usually a dedicated area where you have to leave the car.

Any time that I have to do this, I take a picture of the car in the designated drop off area just in case something happens to it after I’ve left it off.

3. Keep an eye on your credit card

I’ve a friend who rented a car in Dublin for two days recently. All was fine with the car and he dropped it back after his trip.

Two weeks later he noticed a random charge on one of his credit cards from the car hire company. When he queried it, he was told it was for tyre damage.

Luckily, he had a video that he took before he drove the car that showed scuff marks on the alloy. They eventually accepted that he didn’t cause the damage and refunded him.

Hi, coming the US via England, I rented a car from Budget at the Knock airport and dropped it off in Galway. I did get the rental insurance letter from American Express in advance, that process is automated so you can get it and print it quickly. The guy at the rental car counter said he REALLY appreciated having the letter, said he gets into a lot of arguments with folks. So the rental experience was a breeze for us. Worked out to $66 a day for four days.

I got the manual transmission, but wouldn't recommend that unless you are very comfortable with a stick shift. Using the left hand was odd, I caught myself reaching for the shift lever with the right hand a couple of times. The first hours were nervous, but after a day or two my brain had accepted driving on the left. Read up on how to navigate roundabouts if you aren't familiar with that.

Highly recommend touring the Wild Atlantic Way by car, great way to tour the countryside and be able to stop at random places and soak in the scenery. Absolutely worth the expense.

If you are over 75 it seems you need a Doctor's Certificate as well as Driving License etc but this is not explained properly by the rental companies.

How to plan a Europe road trip: Top lessons learned from a seasoned driver

Remember the journey is the destination on your Europe road trip

There’s nothing like hitting the highway on a European road trip to get "in country," be it on a high-speed motorway or a narrow, winding country lane. My husband and I have explored Europe by car more than 20 times and experienced the joys and sometimes headaches of driving in foreign countries. Here, we share our tips on planning a Europe trip by car to help you make the most of your vacation.

Do I need a driving permit when traveling Europe by car?

Some (but not all) European countries require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) when traveling around Europe by car. Check the International Travel Page of the U.S. Department of State's website, which provides information by country. You can obtain IDPs at your local AAA office (you needn’t be a member) or by mail.

We haven't always needed it, and some car rental agencies are stricter than others. Our policy is "better safe than sorry."

Should I get a manual or automatic transmission?

Most rental vehicles in the U.K. and Europe are manual transmission. Cars with automatic transmission are more expensive to rent, adding to the cost of your European road trip. But this is not the time to learn if you don’t drive a stick shift at home. You don't want to be grinding gears and stalling out on the autobahn.

Do I need additional insurance?

Rental car insurance is expensive. Check what your home policies cover in advance (some credit cards may offer full or partial coverage) and adjust your rental coverage accordingly.

Inspect your rental car before you hit the road

It's often tempting to jump in the rental car and zoom off on your grand adventure. But inspecting your rental (and documenting any scratches and dings) before you depart protects you from getting charged for them later. You don't want to end your vacation on a sour note — or have this conversation in a language not native to you!

Additionally, take a moment to learn the location of headlights, wipers, hazard lights, and other safety features on your rental before starting your trip, so you won't have to fumble for them while driving unfamiliar roads.

Rent a car in a remote location

For our road trip in Norway, we started in Oslo. However, instead of picking up our car in that crowded city, we took the train to a suburban location and picked up our car there to explore the fjords. With fewer cars on the road, it was a less frenzied start to our journey.

Use a combination of printed maps and apps

Use a combination of old school and new school navigation tools when driving in Europe

Nothing ruins a European road trip like getting hopelessly lost. Depending on your destination, a GPS device in your rental car may be worth the price. We rely on a combination of GPS, apps, and paper maps for navigation. Old-school printed maps provide an overview of the area that a tiny screen can't manage and often highlight landmarks or scenic roads worth a detour.

Data connections can be spotty (and expensive) in remote areas, so download maps and directions before starting out for the day. Also, note that apps such as Google Maps might not be as accurate in Europe as in the U.S. — as we learned the hard way when it routed our car down a steep hiking trail in a German national park. Yikes!

Anticipate the costs of driving in Europe

Many European highways charge tolls. Sometimes, you can pay cash or credit as you go; other times, it's automated. Your rental car company can advise you on the best payment method. Also, fuel costs in Europe are approximately double that of the U.S., an important calculation to include in your Europe road trip planner. (Gas prices are listed per liter; multiply by 4 to approximate a per-gallon price.)

Other than avoiding toll roads, you can’t escape these costs. Consider it a necessary trip expense and enjoy your journey. Upon returning home, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for "low" gas prices in the United States.

Plan a general route in advance

Planning is key when it comes to a European road trip

Think about the sights you want to see and the type of road trip that makes the most sense for you. Making a large loop, going from point A to point B, or taking a series of day trips from a "home base" are all viable options. This may impact your rental car costs, lodging choices, and onward journey.

Be realistic about distances

American road trips conjure images of zipping through wide open spaces along the interstate. When exploring Europe by car, it's important to adjust your mindset to more densely populated countries with shorter distances (and those winding country lanes). You may not rack up thousands of miles, but you'll likely find charming towns and interesting sights more frequently.

Don't be caught "hangry"

Restaurants (even simple cafes) in many European small towns still observe traditional mealtime hours; don't count on finding something open at any random time of day. If you don't want to be tied to a rigid food schedule, pack a picnic lunch and a few nibbles to stave off grumbling stomachs and grumpy conversations.

The exception to this rule is rest stops on major motorways. These restaurants usually have flexible hours and serve up good food. When did you last see fresh salads and desserts served with china at a highway rest stop back home?

Know where you'll sleep

Whether you’re staying in a hotel, an RV, or a tent, make sure you've arranged for accommodations as part of your European road trip planning. Travelers are visiting Europe in record numbers post-COVID; you don't want to be stuck camping by a busy road or getting the last motel room next to a dumpster.

Enjoy a mixture of old and new with postcard scenery of the Black Forest's quaint half-timbered villages (and famous Black Forest cake!), while cruising the high-speed thrills of the autobahn. Make pitstops at the headquarters of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz . Vroom!

Tour Brittany on a road trip through France

Explore amazing Mont Saint-Michel, see dramatic coastlines with quaint harbor towns, and marvel at the prehistoric monoliths at Carnac, all while eating crepes and sipping cider.

What do I need to rent a car?

When you’re booking the car, you just need a debit or credit card.

At the rental counter, you’ll need:

Your passport
Your voucher
Each driver’s driving licence
The main driver’s credit card (some rental companies also accept debit cards, but most don’t).

Important: Please make sure you check the car’s rental terms as well, as each rental company has its own rules. For example? They might need to see some extra ID. They might not accept certain types of credit card. Or they might not rent to any driver who hasn’t held their driving licence for 36 months or more.

Am I old enough to rent a car?

Can i book a car for my partner, friend, colleague, etc, any tips on choosing the right car.

Think about where you’re going. An SUV might be great for cruising down a Texas freeway, but a smaller car’s probably much easier to drive in Rome.

Don’t forget the gearbox. In some countries, nearly everyone drives a manual car. In others, automatics are the norm. Make sure you rent one you can drive!

Is the rental price all inclusive?

The price you see includes the car, mandatory cover (e.g. Theft Protection and Collision Damage Waiver) and fees that, if they apply, are usually payable at pick-up (e.g. any one-way fees, airport surcharges or local taxes).

It also includes any extras you’ve already added (e.g. GPS or baby seats).

It doesn’t include any extra cover you buy when you get to the rental counter.

PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Volvo offers a range of five plug-in hybrid vehicles, including SUVs, sedans, and wagons.

Yes, all hybrid cars need to be charged. Mild hybrid cars, like the XC60 gas (mild hybrid) cannot be plugged in and rely on internal charging through regenerative braking, but plug-in hybrids like the XC60 plug-in hybrid, can be plugged in at electric charging points. Learn more about charging.

Our plug-in hybrid vehicles come with a charging cable which you can use to connect to a regular home outlet for lightweight charging duty (Level 1). Although the initial investment is greater, you’ll enjoy an extended range and better performance as part of the car’s value. Also, the ability to drive in Pure mode, or on pure electricity, will help you save money on fuel costs.

Volvo plug-in hybrids are designed to travel long distances without you having to worry about the battery range. Mild hybrid cars have a combined starter motor and electric generator that gently supports the gas engine to use fuel more efficiently, but they cannot run on electricity alone. They use the combined starter and generator for smooth take-offs and braking or slowing the car, while recovering brake energy to be stored in a small 48-volt battery. Full hybrid cars also generate battery power through regenerative braking, but they have a more powerful battery. So, they can run on pure electricity for short distances or in tandem with the gas engine. Our plug-in hybrid vehicles are designed with a considerably larger 400-volt battery and better performance with the added option of different driving modes. This means that the fully electric range is larger still and many drivers can operate their car on the electric motor alone. The plug-in hybrid battery is mainly charged with the included charging cable, or with an additional home wallbox or public AC changing point. But it can also be charged while driving through brake energy regeneration.

Volvo plug-in hybrids offer great towing capacity, especially thanks to efficient AWD. Maximum towing capacity depends on the model of your Volvo car.

1. Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

Best for a slow pace of life

Word is spreading about this remote island off the South Carolina coast, between Hilton Head and Savannah , that’s accessible by ferry only. But Daufuskie Island remains a sleepy, car-free escape where visitors and locals ply the oak-lined roads by bike or golf cart. Vacation rentals are available for overnight stays within the Haig Point community.

A favorite is the two-bedroom historic lighthouse said to be haunted by the friendly ghost of the former lightkeeper’s daughter. When you’re not exploring the island’s 3.5 miles of white sand beaches and quiet backroads, check out local galleries like The Iron Fish , visit a rum distillery or go horseback riding along the beach.

2. Tangier Island, Virginia

Best for dining on soft shell crabs

Located 12 miles off Virginia ’s eastern shore and accessible by ferry, Tangier Island’s locals speak a unique dialect of English that’s been largely preserved since the 1700s.

Most visitors arrive on the car-free island for quick day trips via seasonal passenger ferries from Onancock, on Virginia’s mainland. But it’s worth settling in at a vacation rental or bed and breakfast for a night or longer to really feel the rhythm of a true fishing island (and to eat as many soft shell crabs – Tangier’s sublime seafood specialty – as you can).

3. Dry Tortugas, Florida

Best for snorkeling

Lapped by the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico, roughly 70 miles west of Key West , the seven tiny islands that make up the Dry Tortugas require a ferry or seaplane to reach. And it’s well worth the effort to get here from crowded Key West.

The reward comes in a car-free escape where you can camp beachfront at Garden Key, explore the historic 19th-century Fort Jefferson and snorkel in the pristine waters, where rays, parrot fish, sergeant majors and sea turtles ( tortugas , from the islands’ name) abound.

4. Two Harbors, Catalina Island, California

Best for scuba diving

Some 22 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California , the waters surrounding Catalina Island lure scuba divers to explore golden kelp forests dazzling with dappled sunbeams and teeming with bright orange Garibaldi fish (and sometimes sea lions, too).

On land, you can look forward to a car-free vacation in the quaint little town of Two Harbors (quieter than Avalon, Catalina’s main hub), where a rustic stay (read: BYO sleeping bag, pillow and towel) awaits at Catalina Cabins . There’s also the Craftsman-style bed and breakfast, Banning House Lodge , for bedding down with more creature comforts. Hire a golf cart or set out on foot to visit area beaches, restaurants and hiking trails.

5. Halibut Cove, Alaska

Best for fishing

Hop the scenic ferry from Homer for the 12-mile ride across Kachemak Bay to reach this car-free coastal community on the Kenai Peninsula home to roughly 200 residents. There are rustic log cabins in Halibut Cove for rent through Reserve America and Alaska’s Division of Parks & Outdoor Recreation. Or splurge on a stay at a wilderness lodge, like Alaska Stillpoint Lodge or Ridgewood Wilderness Lodge . Kachemak Bay State Park is at your doorstep for activities that range from ogling glaciers, fishing for monster halibut and salmon, kayaking and heaps of hiking. 6. Rock Island State Park, Wisconsin

Best for lakefront camping

Tourists flock to Door County’s scenic Lake Michigan beaches and quaint villages in the summer months like moths to the long lost light. But you can escape the sunshine-starved crowds (and cars) by heading just off the northern tip of the Door Peninsula and making your way to Rock Island State Park , instead.

Accessible by ferry service from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend, the island has campsites you can stroll to from the ferry dock, miles of shoreline and lonely beaches and the historic, blufftop Pottawatomie Lighthouse to explore.

7. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Best for old-fashioned family fun

It’s hard to dream up a more all-American summer vacation spot than Mackinac Island, which sits surrounded by the sapphire waters of Lake Huron between Michigan ’s upper and lower peninsulas. Motor vehicles were exiled from here more than 120 years ago after they gave the island’s carriage-pulling horses too much of a fright. Today, visitors get around on foot, bike or by horse-drawn carriage tours.

Rent a cabin in the woods or a Victorian cottage near the lakefront and clear your summer schedule for lots of swimming, hiking and, of course, sampling all the fudge flavors for which the island has become famous. 8. Bald Head Island, North Carolina

Best for beach bums

The numbers speak for themselves when it comes to this car-free locale south of Wilmington, off the North Carolina coast: Bald Head Island has 14 miles of golden beaches and is protected by more than 10,000 acres of mostly untouched nature preserve in the form of marshes, maritime forests and more. It’s a giant natural playground, waiting to be explored.

Passenger ferries arrive here after a 20-minute crossing from the mainland. Then the roughly 5-sq-mile island is yours to enjoy (without sharing the streets with a single car). Take the tram or rent a bike to get around to beaches, kayaking or fishing on the Cape Fear River or your vacation rental on the beach. You can even stay at a New England-style inn overlooking the marina and marsh.

9. McCarthy, Alaska

Best for backcountry adventures

Located inside the absolute wilds of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in central southeast Alaska, the tiny, car-free town of McCarthy is home to a year-round population of just a few dozen hearty souls and reached via a pedestrian footbridge across the Kennicott River.

Book into the historic Ma Johnson’s Hotel , an erstwhile boarding house, and fill your schedule with backcountry park adventures like rafting and glacier trekking. There’s even a pub – the Golden Saloon – dishing up tacos and live music, within stumbling distance of your bed. Kick off in the city of Bergen , on Norway’s southwest coast, and make way past mighty fjords to Voss and the colossal Tvindefossen waterfall. Then check the world's longest road tunnel off your to-do list, a cavernous 24.5km route under the mountains.

Catch a quick ferry across the Sognefjord and carry on to the Fjaler valleys, a land of glaciers and snowy mountain peaks, to the waterside towns of Stryn or the mountain village Videster.

Work your way northward to the well-touristed towns of Geiranger, down the death-defying hairpin turns of Trollstigen (literally “The Troll Path”).

6. High-altitude adventure on Germany's Alpine Road

The Alpenstrasse, or Alpine Road, is your ticket to a bonafide Bavarian odyssey: a safe route through the unforgettable vistas of Germany 's high-altitude meadows, mountains, crystal-clear lakes and cosy village restaurants. Start lakeside at Lindau on the Bodensee and head to Oberstaufen for a therapeutic beauty treatment in the country’s “Capital of Wellness”.

Venture eastwards to the Breitachklamm gorge, where the river Breitach cuts through verdant cliffs and colossal boulders. Start in Athens and take the coastal roads south through the Athenian Riviera to Sounion, situated at the tip the Attic peninsula. Watch a sunset at the Temple of Poseidon, then drive northward through mythic mountains to the fortress of Kórinthos before posting up in the legendary city of Mycenae (home of Homeric heroes).

Leave the hectic pace of England ’s capital London behind. Make for Oxford, home of the world’s oldest English-language university, and a place of storied pubs where the likes of J.R.R Tolkien and Lewis Carrol regularly wet their whistles.

Hit the gas in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, the biggest historic centre in Italy after Rome and arguably the country’s most chaotic metropolis.

Adventure onwards along the Tyrrhenian coast to the golden sands of Cefalù – a great holiday spot for families, with a mellow medieval town centre to boot.

Get to the island’s heartland and the ancient city of Enna. Surrounded by cliffs on all sides, and built atop a massive hill, you'll feel as though you've walked on the set of Game of Thrones .
