Trek SL1000 review

Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - luckily it can get you a lot of bike

Paul Vincent

trek sl1000 for sale

Half a grand is a lot of money for a lot of people - and luckily it can get you a lot of bike. There's a huge range to choose from at this price, from commuting cycles to long-distance tourers, but if you're looking for something a little lighter and sportier you'll be pleased to know that for around £500 you can buy a machine that'll easily cope with distance rides such as sportives, as well as your day to day cycling, with a good dose of style thrown in.

The Trek SL1000, was a winner in Cycling Plus' 2006 budget race bikes of the year. >

Frame >The Trek frame is based on 7005 series aluminium tubing with butted main tubes and is 1,551g in the 56cm size tested. The welding is plain without any smoothing of the joins, and the paint and decals are an improvement on the previous year's model. We like the neatly executed mudguard bridge detailing between the chainstays.

The distinctive and unusual forward-sloping top-tube (it's higher at the seatpost) is an aspect of the 1000-1500 series that you'll either like or loathe, but the short head-tube enables a low riding position for time trialling that simply isn't possible on the Specialized with its taller head-tube. The handlebar height can be altered considerably by flipping the stem through 180 degrees to point upwards, and further adjustments can be effected in small increments by using the headset spacers provided. The inclusion of rack and mudguard eyes is a major plus point as far as versatility for commuting and general cycling is concerned, meaning that this frame is a good all-rounder.

> Equipment >Given that the £500 price point is largely focused on those who are just getting into their cycling, it is appropriate that Trek have specified the SL1000 with a triple chainset, because the range of gears this provides is more important than the small weight saving of a double chainset. The anatomic 'pistol grip' handlebars have a slightly deeper and lower bend than those of the Specialized, and the radically sloping stem provides a greater than average range of handlebar height settings, though it doesn't win points for style. The Shimano Sora levers work well with your hands rested on the hoods, but it's a long reach to the brake hood button levers when your hands are on the drops.

>An eight-speed Shimano cassette means the transition to a smaller gear is a noticeably bigger step than with a 10-speed system, but the testers felt that it hardly affected their ability to maintain a constant pedalling cadence on undulating roads.

> > Wheels >The Trek wheels are of the traditional variety in using 32 spokes per wheel, laced in a 3-cross pattern to strong, reputable Alex rims - each spoke is crossed by two others, between hub and rim - with unbranded but smooth-running hubs. This year's wheels are 115g heavier per pair than those of the previous year's model that were outwardly similar but used Rigida Chrina rims instead. Trek have retained the tried and trusted Bontrager Select tyres that are probably the best budget tyre we have come across for vertical compliance, and they grip tenaciously in the wet. Their slightly larger 25mm width means they are more resistant to pinch punctures than 23mm tyres, but they'll need to be changed for a 23mm tyre if mudguards are to be fitted to provide enough clearance.

> Handling

The Trek's butted tubes make for a lively performance out on the road and were it not for the weight of the components, this could easily be confused with a bike costing twice the price. There really is very little to criticise when ridden on the flat, but at a shade under 21lb its bulk, which is mainly centred on the wheels, makes it harder for the rider to change tempo on a climb. That said, the fun and lively nature of the ride makes you want to take the long way home on a warm balmy summer evening.

Though odd looking, the system of using spacers stacked to give the greatest handlebar height didn't cause our testers any worries, and the time triallists will warm to the fact that the spacers can be omitted completely to get a low, aerodynamic riding position. > > Verdict

The Trek won our budget race bike of 2006 award by virtue of its versatility and now receives a carbon seatpost, but it's 115g heavier overall because of the new wheels. Compared to the previous model year, the Specialized has seen the biggest raft of improvements which, like the Trek, include a carbon seatpost in place of an aluminium one, together with a higher spec and marginally lighter wheels. >Iit's hard to ignore the Trek's inclusion of mudguard and rack eyes. These make the it a very versatile bike, a quality that can't be overlooked if the bike is to be used year-round for different types of riding. If versatility is your bag, the Trek should be right up your street.

A note about Trek road bike model numbers: in general, higher model numbers mean higher original prices. This is especially true of models within a particular year.

1993+ RETAIL PRICES FOR TREKS

Suggested retail prices for Treks from 1993 to current are included in the specifications at BikePedia.com . These are listed under "Sugg Retail" for each bike. This database is a great resource.

The Trek Bike Archives , covering 2003 and newer Treks, also contains suggested retail prices.

LISTING OF TREK RETAIL PRICES BY MODEL AND YEAR

Visitors to this site have submitted the following pricing information for various Trek models at the time they were new. The prices are a combination of list prices and selling prices. (If you have any pricing on Trek steel road bike models, please send it along so it can be added here.)

WHAT IS MY USED TREK WORTH? (If "PRICELESS!" is not sufficiently accurate for you.)

eBay.com is the best practical guide. It can tell you what similar bikes recently sold for on eBay. Try search/ advanced search/ check "completed items only". This way, you get the final prices paid. Search for words like "Trek road" with words to exclude "aluminum carbon". You also can search more specifically, such as for "Trek 400". You might need to try for a few weeks to find a bike similar to yours, if it is not a common model.

To compare a local sale to an eBay sale, you should add the cost of shipping to the eBay price. A low value bike can be hard to sell on eBay for top dollar if the bike is to be shipped, as that can add $50 or more to the price.

Craigslist.org can provide some information about current prices. However, these are asking prices, not the actual price for which the bike was sold. One can search by region on the Craigslist.org site. One can search for an item on Craigslist overall (not just by region). Use a search engine (Google or Yahoo etc.) and include "Craigslist" as the first keyword. Follow this by what you are looking for. For example "Craigslist Trek 760".

A very rough measure of current selling price is to multiply the original selling price by a percentage. See the price information above for prices of many Treks when new. For bikes 1976 to about 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 70% for a bike. For bikes from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 50% of the original selling price. This is for bikes with good to excellent paint and in good to excellent overall condition. Condition is very important. A bike in mint condition will sell well above these ranges, perhaps at or above the original price when new. A bike in poor condition, especially one with significant rust inside and out, has little value.

The percentage for selling frames is higher than for bikes because the frames are less outdated than old components. For frames 1976 to 1983, one can use a range of 40% to 100%. For frames from about 1984 to 1990, one can use 33% to 80% of the original selling price. This is for frames in good to excellent overall condition.

The bike values above are useful only if the potential buyer is a person who appreciates a vintage lightweight or specifically, a vintage Trek. A vintage road bike offered at a garage sale might never be sold, even for a ridiculously low price, because it is unlikely the right buyer will come along. See Selling Suggestions for help in finding the right buyer.

Value can vary by season . Road bikes typically sell for more money and more quickly in the Spring and early Summer. An exception is for local sales in regions that don't have cold or rainy Fall and Winter seasons. Another exception is high end collector bikes, which tend to be season independent.

SMALL VINTAGE LIGHTWEIGHT BIKES SELL FOR LESS?

Smaller vintage road frames/bikes often do not sell for as much as a larger version of the same frame. This is true of the 21” (54cm) size and especially the 19” (48cm) frames. Nineteen inch frames/bikes can sell at a discount of up to 40% over their larger brethren. The lesser value is easily demonstrated; for example, by looking at eBay selling prices. (An exception to this general rule is for classic French and Italian bikes, which are highly valued by [older] Japanese collectors.)

Why would this be? Certainly Trek sold bikes of these sizes to willing buyers in the late 1970s and early to mid 1980s at the same price as for larger bikes. There must have been the right number of smaller men, women and kids to buy them. Are Americans that much bigger now? A recent scientific study says no. Certainly most kids, as they grow up and need larger bikes, will pass through these size ranges.

I believe older bikes are bought and kept by people interested in fixing or working on them. These owners need a bit of expertise to get the bikes properly back on the road or keep them on the road (or even just to keep them in a collection). It also takes effort and knowledge to locate replacement parts. New riders tend to buy new bikes and only slowly (if at all) learn how to repair them. For parents to buy a used bike for their (smaller) children, requires that the parents be bike savvy, which eliminates lots of potential small bike users. Bike repair and maintenance generally do not interest women (there are major exceptions to this rule), who are a major fraction of people who would use the smaller bikes.

Even if a person wanted to have a shop maintain their classic Nuovo Record, Super Record, or SunTour Superbe-equipped bike, the shops with that knowledge are rare and the parts cannot be bought from their typical suppliers.

The good news, for those of us built close to the ground, is that we can buy vintage lightweight bikes at favorable prices.

Trek 1000 Road Bike Review: Is it worth buying?

This post contains affiliate links.

Trek 1000 Road Bike Review

When it comes to cycling brands, Trek is one of the top brands on the market today. They are renowned for sending a good team to the Tour de France and are the title sponsor of the Trek Segafredo Team .

One of their more affordable road bikes is the Trek SL1000, which has won numerous competitions. Available for just under $1000, it is not considered one of the elite bikes like you would see from riders like Jonas Vingegaard (Recent Tour de France Winner) or Tadej Pogacar .

However, the Trek SL1000 is one of the best entry-level options to be used by riders looking to build something unique and improve their overall riding performance .

Since this is such a popular bike, we have deemed it worthy of having a review, and we aim to look at some of the fundamental features that make it stand out.

You can see for yourself whether Trek SL1000 might be the ideal bike for your needs when riding. Keep in mind that the bike is specifically designed for mountain bike riders.

If you are new to cycling, I encourage you to read this article: Different Types Of Cycling: 9 best options with their benefits!

Trek SL1000 Road Bike Spec Review

While it might seem expensive to buy the Trek SL1000, when you consider other professional brands and bikes, you can easily see the value of the features included .

We will break down each of these sections, which should help you determine if the Trek SL1000 is the ideal bike for your cycling journey:

The frame is the first thing you always look at when buying a new bike. For road bikes, you want them to be as rigid as possible, but they should also be lightweight.

For the SL1000, Trek has opted for the reliable 7005 series aluminum tubing for the frame. and it comes in at just over 1.5kg for the frame only at a size of 56cm .

One of the most interesting features is the forward-sloping top tube. Since it is higher than the seat post, it is one of the most complicated designs, and some people think that it might be in the way when riding. However, others enjoy the extra slope for more comfort and overall performance.

Since the handlebar is often part of the frame, you will need to find a decent handlebar. For the SL1000, Trek includes an adjustable handlebar.

It is quite easy to adjust the height of the handlebar, and you can simply flip the stem. Adding mudguards might add slightly more weight, but it also makes the bike ideal for commuting .

Wheels are an essential part of any bike, and when it comes to road bikes, you will be spending plenty of time using the wheels to commute from one point to the other .

For the SL1000, Trek has gone with 32 spokes for these wheels, including the durable Alex rims with unbranded hubs. Fortunately, these will offer a good riding sensation.

The Bontrager Select Tires are a trusted option that Trek often goes to. For the SL1000, the brand has stuck to its guns with this budget tire .

These tires are about 25mm wide, which offers more durability. Trek has previously relied on the 23mm tires, but these prove to be less resilient when it comes to punctures .

3- Cassettes And Other Equipment

Once you have the wheels and frame sorted, the next important feature would be looking at the equipment and accessories often found on these bikes.

Trek has gone for a triple chainset, which means it has a wider range of gears for riders to choose from. Unfortunately, it is far heavier than the double chainset previously found on other models.

As for the rest of the derailleur, Shimano is the main sponsor for this equipment. The Shimano Sora levers offer quick changes in gears and can be easily reached with your hands while you are cycling .

The only downside is that it might slightly prevent you from reaching the brake levers when you need to use them.

Going for an 8-speed cassette is slightly unexpected, and due to the performance promises from Trek, one would argue that the 10-speed cassette might provide slightly more versatility to riders.

Fortunately, the gears have been designed to accommodate all pedaling speeds, and you will be surprised by how much consistency you have with pedaling.

Trek SL1000 Performance Review

Now that you better understand how the bike would perform based on the specifications, we should look at the real-world application .

The real-world application of this bike will make or break whether people see it as a viable option for use.

After a few days of testing the bike within the realms of its capabilities, here are a few things worth noting:

1- Handling

If you are planning to use the bike for performance, you would need to make handling one of the top priorities.

The SL1000 features abutted tubes, which adds to the liveliness of the performance. Compared to elite bikes, it is slightly overweight, but it still comes in at a weight of 21-pound s.

With the adjustable handlebars, you can be sure that it would lend itself to some impressive performance benefits, and the only area where you feel the weight is slightly frustrating would be when climbing. However, the cassettes allow you to easily select a different gear, which improves performance.

Finally, the time-trial aspect of the bike is one that we did not expect to be so good. Yes, the standard design of the bike might make it better suited for road cyclists, but when you flip the handlebars and omit some of the spacers, you will attain a lower position.

The lower position is best for achieving the important aerodynamic position.

2- Performance Characteristics

When looking at all of these features, you get a sense that Trek is trying to create a high-end bike that would allow riders to ride comfortably at a performance level without spending as much .

In essence, the weight is the only thing that often drags it down, and if the bike lost about 5-pounds, you might be paying double the price.

The great thing is that you can manually add a carbon fiber frame if you feel the need to do so. The carbon fiber frame would significantly reduce the weight, but it could cost you almost ten times the value of the bike .

With efficient disc brakes, you can also rely on the stopping power. However, don’t have the guts to do 100km/h down a slope like the professionals.

You might also enjoy reading: What Are The Differences Between Biking And Cycling?

3- Value For Money

Since the bike is less than $1,000, it is one of the best options for those that want to save money. Yes, $1,000 is plenty to spend on a bike if you are not a serious cyclist, but looking at newer bikes with similar features, it is a bargain. Cheaper brands like Diamondback cannot compete with the Trek SL1000.

Our tests show that the Trek 1000 road bike would provide you with all the value you need to ensure optimal performance without any significant upgrades.

Trek 1000 Road Bike Overall Specifications :

The table below contains Trek 1000 road bike’s overall characteristics.

Pros And Cons Of Trek 1000 Road Bike

Before buying the Trek SL1000, you must consider the pros and cons it would bring to the table. Once you have a basic idea of what the bike could offer you, you can easily determine if it is worth your time.

Here are some of the pros and cons of the Trek SL1000 from our personal experiences and testing:

Pros Of Trek 1000 Road Bike :

  • Reasonable weight
  • Fully adjustable handlebars
  • Durable tires
  • Inexpensive price
  • Reliable Shimano Shifters

Cons Of Trek 1000 Road Bike :

  • Aluminum frame (Not Carbon Fiber)
  • Slightly overweight
  • The frame might work for you, or it won’t

Verdict: Should You Buy The Trek 1000 Road Bike?

After testing the Trek SL1000, we believe that it would come down to why you want to buy a bike. If you want to perform at an elite level, the bike might not be as well suited for your needs. You could be left wondering why the bike does not achieve the same speeds as you would find from brands like Cervelo.

However, if you are just buying a bike for commuting, this bike might offer you far more than you bargained for. It could give you better performance due to the lightweight, and some of the equipment included will offer real-world value to riders.

Essentially, it would come down to if you need such a bike for your goals and everyday activities. We would argue that you probably don’t need something as unique, but why not buy it for the affordability of the bike?

The US announces a big offshore wind sale in the Central Atlantic

Avatar for Michelle Lewis

The US Department of the Interior (DOI) today announced an offshore wind  Final Sale Notice and auction for 275,000+ acres off the coasts of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia.

The Central Atlantic Wind Energy Areas have the potential to generate 6.3 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy – enough to power over 2.2 million homes. The Final Sale Notice is the last step required of the DOI to hold a lease auction for the area, which is scheduled for August 14. Seventeen companies have qualified to participate in the August sale.

Earlier this month, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Maryland to engage stakeholders in identifying acreage for additional offshore wind lease auctions in the Atlantic. Additional acreage is critical to meeting the offshore wind targets of Maryland and other mid-Atlantic states.

Liz Burdock, president and CEO at Oceantic Network, said:

Recognizing the growing demand for offshore wind energy and the diverse set of stakeholders involved, BOEM consistently demonstrates its commitment to working directly with states to ensure their offshore wind targets can be met. These efforts, in combination with the other three lease sales set to happen in 2024, are leading to more jobs, increased investment, and continued growth of the domestic supply chain.

During the Biden administration, the DOI has approved the US’s first eight commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects in federal waters. BOEM has held four offshore wind lease sales, including offshore New York, New Jersey, and the Carolinas, and the first-ever sales offshore the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. The DOI recently announced a schedule of up to 12 additional lease sales through 2028.

And just in case you or someone you know are worried about how further offshore wind farm development is going to affect wildlife, Amber Hewett, senior director of offshore wind energy for the National Wildlife Federation, had this to say in an email about the Central Atlantic offshore wind sale:

Investments in the responsible development of clean, renewable energy, including offshore wind, will provide high-quality job opportunities while helping to protect wildlife and communities from the threat of climate change. The National Wildlife Federation applauds this important step in the process, and we look forward to working with our Central Atlantic partners to continue increasing offshore wind energy output while pressing for stringent wildlife protections and community engagement every step of the way.
