Why Is Safari Locking Up?

While it can be easy for a user to assume that some form of virus or malware is causing the issue, it may be something far more simple. For example, common reasons such as software plugins, extensions, corrupt installation files, or even a website that contains poor coding can all cause Safari to lock up and crash. 

Fortunately, many of these problems are rather easy to fix, so long as you know the right solution. 

How to Stop Safari From Crashing

One of the first things a user can try is force quitting Safari and restarting it. Usually when there’s an issue with any program, a simple restart can help with specific problems.

Another thing a user should try before diving into the nitty-gritty is simply restarting their device. Much like force quitting and restarting Safari, performing a restart can rid the browser of any small bugs that might be causing technical issues. This quick solution can potentially alleviate Apple Safari of any small issues or bugs. Simply go to Apple > Restart from the menu bar to restart your device. 

3. Update macOS and Safari

Updating macOS and Safari may also be a good idea for users. In addition to potentially solving any issues a user may be experiencing with Safari, it’s generally a good idea to check for a device update on your Mac, as it can greatly increase your chances of avoiding major issues. Updates to an operating system also provide critical security patches, as well as other things that help protect your machine. You can always check for macOS updates by going to Settings > General > Software Update and see if an update is available. 

Even better, updating macOS ensures that Safari is also up to date. 

4. Create a New User Profile

When it comes to simple solutions, a user may need to create a new Safari profile to prevent future crashes. Seeing an introduction in macOS Sonoma, profiles allow users to have a browsing history that’s unique to them. There are rare occurrences when a specific problem is tied to a user’s profile, meaning creating a new one could easily solve a specific issue. 

To create a new profile in Safari on Mac, simply follow these steps:

• Open Safari, and then go to Safari in the menu bar.
• Select Settings .
• Go to the Profiles tab and select New Profile .
• Fill out the relevant information and click Create Profile . 

5. Boot Your Mac into Safe Mode

If you need to get an idea of why Safari might be crashing, booting into Safe Mode may help illuminate your problems. Safe Mode helps stop login items and startup items from loading and opening automatically. It also disables certain fonts and deletes certain cache files. If you’re having issues with Apple Safari crashing, seeing if it operates in Safe Mode can help diagnose your problems. 

You will need to know if you are running an Intel processor or Apple silicon. You can check this from the menu bar by going to Apple > About This Mac and checking your processor information. 

For Apple silicon:

• Shut down your Mac by going to Apple > Shut Down . Wait for the Mac to shut down entirely.
• Press and hold the power button on your Mac. Hold it until you see a Loading startup options message.
• Select your drive volume.
• Then, press and hold the Shift key. Click Continue in Safe Mode . Your computer will then restart automatically and you should see the words Safe Mode in the menu bar. 

For Intel-based Macs:

• Restart your Mac or turn it on. Then, immediately press and hold the Shift key. Hold it until you see a login window.
• Log in to your device.
• You should see Safe Mode in the menu bar, though you may also be asked to log in twice. 

If Safari is operating normally while in Safe Mode, it may be third-party software, extensions or certain startup files causing issues.

6. Delete Safari Cache Files

It’s also a good idea to delete Safari cache files. Whenever you visit a website for the first time, your browser downloads the data from the website, making the site load faster the next time you visit it. While this can be extremely helpful for casual internet browsing, users can amass a large cache over time. In essence, it’s possible that your cache is causing issues with Safari, or it’s even possible you may have collected something dubious from your cache. 

To delete your cache in Safari, we recommend two methods. Firstly, you can simply open the browser and go to  History > Clear History from the menu bar. Click the pop-up menu, and then choose how far back you would like to go. In this instance, I would suggest deleting everything, though be warned this may make webpages load slower until you download certain cache files again. 

The second method, which is also the easiest, is a powerful cleaning tool like Intego Washing Machine that will erase all cache and other clogging files from your device while optimizing its performance in real time.

7. Delete All Website Data

If none of the above solutions are providing an answer to your Safari woes, it may be time to consider deleting all of your website data from Safari. Items such as cookies and other data may potentially be causing problems with Safari, causing it to crash. Fortunately, deleting all website data from Safari isn’t too much of a hassle, though users may need to log back into certain websites. 

• Open Safari on your Mac. Then go to  Safari > Settings .
• Tap  Privacy.

8. Disable Safari Extensions

Users may also want to consider disabling any extensions they are running with Safari. This includes third party extensions. As you can turn off one or multiple extensions, it may be wise to disable all extensions, and then bring them back to your browser one by one to see if there is one causing particular issues. Users may want to delete any extensions they do not recognize. Outdated extensions or problematic extensions may be causing issues as well. 

To disable third-party extensions or any extensions, follow these steps: 

• From the Safari app, go to Safari > Settings (or Preferences ).
• Click  Extensions from the list of options.

• To uninstall an extension, click on it and then click the  Uninstall button. 

9. Reset PRAM or NVRAM 

Users who are experiencing problems with Safari may also want to reset their NVRAM or PRAM. These sections of memory help store certain settings, and these settings may have an impact on your browser and its performance. 10. Run Disk Utility 

Another option users have is running Disk Utility. An incredibly useful app that comes baked directly into macOS, users can run this program to check for any errors on their drive. It can be especially useful in situations such as these when an app is misbehaving or crashing. Even better, using Disk Utility is rather straightforward, and can help repair your startup disk. In this instance, users will be taking advantage of the First Aid option for their disks. Remember that Disk Utility can be found in Finder by going to Applications > Utilities. 

• Open the Disk Utility app.
• Select your primary drive. It will likely be named Macintosh HD . 

• A pop-up will notify you that the app is about to check the disk for errors and repair them if necessary. Select Run . 
• Wait for Disk Utility to finish. 

11. Use Apple Diagnostics to Check for Hardware Issues

While this is more of a last resort, it may be hardware problems causing Safari to crash. Though this hopefully isn’t the case for users, it may be a possibility that a hardware problem may be causing issues with Safari. Fortunately, there is a way to inspect and test your hardware, thanks to Apple Diagnostics. If you are experiencing the Safari not working on MacBook issues, such as not opening because  Safari can't establish a secure connection  to the server or not responding, quitting unexpectedly, running slowly, not loading web pages, online  videos not playing on MacBook , or other problems, you can try the solutions below.

Quick solutions to fix Safari not working on Mac :

Check the network

Force quit safari, restart mac, clear the website data in safari, disable safari extensions, clean up the corrupted safari plist files and database, terminate the processes that may affect safari running, update safari.

It is worth mentioning that the network will affect your access to a website in the Safari browser. If your Safari not working on Mac , you can check if your Wi-Fi is down and reset your network settings.

When Safari is not responding on Mac, you can activate it by force quitting and relaunching it.

• Click the Apple logo and select Force Quit.

• Wait a few seconds and reopen Safari.

Sometimes, the Safari browser that doesn't perform properly on Mac is due to temporary operating system glitches. A restart will  refresh your Mac  and all programs.

To  restart your Mac device , go to the Apple menu > Restart.

Have you ever cleared the Safari browser data? If haven't, that may be the cause of your Safari not working on MacBook well. The accumulated website data will slow down the speed at which Safari loads pages.

Remove cookies and history:

• Choose the length of time you want (better choose all history) to clear cookies and other website data in Safari.

Extensions add new features to Safari and simplify your internet experience. But some extensions are auto-added to your Safari. And some of them may make conflicts in Safari when they proceed with tasks or self-maintenance, leading to Safari crashing or sudden quitting.

When that happens, you can disable all the extensions immediately to do troubleshooting.

• Open Safari and select Safari from the top menu bar > Preferences.
• Click the Extensions tab.
• Uncheck the extensions you are unfamiliar with or don't need.

Maybe the corrupted PLIST files or database of Safari result in Safari in a disordered state. You can remove this data to debug your Safari.

• Open Finder and click Go at the top menu bar.
• Select Go to Folder from the Go menu.
• Copy and paste ~/Library/Safari into the box and click Go.
• Move the LastSession.plist and file names containing "History.db" to Trash.

Then, relaunching Safari can enable it to recreate these PLIST files and history databases automatically. You'll find your unresponsive Safari back to normal now.

If Safari not working on Mac even after the above troubleshooting on it, check if other programs block Safari from normal working. Especially some third-party browsers or the recently installed software.

You can close the running third-party programs and then reopen the Safari app to see if it performs well now.

macOS bugs causing sporadic browsing issues with Safari, Firefox, others

According to user reports on the Apple Support Communities, the Safari 14.1 update breaks functionality on popular websites like eBay. The issue appears to predominantly affect Safari 14.1 on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.

There are reports from developers about ongoing problems with the latest versions of Apple's browser, too. Google Chrome developer advocate Jake Archibald reports that localStorage in Safari 14.1 is broken, causing tabs with use the same localStorage for text boxes.

Other reports indicate that Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina also has problems with WebAuthN. According to Eclectic Light , Apple pulled the Safari 14.1 update for both of those macOS versions on May 1.

AppleInsider staff members have also run into website problems with macOS Big Sur and Safari 14.1. Problems across our staff don't stop at those browsers, since we've also noticed website functionality issues in Firefox and Google Chrome on sites like eBay and others.

As far as potential fixes, there doesn't appear to be anything surefire. Some users report that disabling JavaScript in Safari preferences seems to resolve some of the issues. The troubleshooting advice given by other users in the Apple Support Forums suggest that a clean reinstall of the operating system solves the problem, but AppleInsider can confirm that this is not a universal solution.

In the meantime, it appears that Apple is aware of the problems and is likely working on a fix, as evidenced by the removal of Safari 14.1 for macOS Mojave and macOS Catalina.

What to do if Safari isn't working on your Mac

Whether you plan to get some work done or want to log into your favorite online gaming website, it's a common problem. Don't worry—there are some simple steps you can take to get your web browser back up and running.

1. Reload the webpage 

The obvious step is often the most helpful. Your problem with Safari might be a momentary glitch that occurred when the page tried to load. Try clicking the reload arrow at the top of your web browser, or pressing Command+R. If Safari doesn't reload the page, quit the browser and try opening the page again.

2. Test another website

Try opening another site to see if the issue is tied to one webpage or all of them. The issue could just be that the one website you’re trying to get to is down.

3. Try a private window

Your Mac computer’s cache holds onto temporary files to make using ‌websites and browsers easier. Sometimes that information runs into trouble with the webpage you’re trying to access. 

Testing Safari with a private window is an easy way to see if your Mac’s temporary data is holding the browser back, since the pages you open in private windows can’t access cached files. 

To open a private window in Safari:

• Open the menu bar in Safari.
• Click File > New Private Window. 
• Try Safari again. If your page works, you’ll want to clear out your browser cache. 

To clear cache in Safari:

• Open the menu bar in Safari > click Preferences .
• Click the Advanced tab on the far right. Then select the Show Develop menu in the menu bar checkbox, then close the Preferences window.
• At the top of your screen, click the Develop menu , then scroll down and select Empty Cache .

4. Check your Wi-Fi

A slow internet connection —or one that’s offline—could be why Safari isn’t working. Make sure your modem is plugged in and working properly. Try testing your Wi-Fi on other connected items—like your phone—as well. For help, check out our guide to speeding up your internet .

5. Update your operating system’s software

MacOS® software updates tend to include Safari updates. Having a Mac that needs updates can cause trouble that extends to your web browser. Follow these steps to update your MacOS:

• Click the Apple menu .
• Then click General > Software Update . On earlier versions, you’ll go to System Preferences > Software Update . 
• If an update is available, click Upgrade Now .

6. Check your extensions

Extensions are capabilities you can add to Safari to customize and enhance how you use it. However, they could also be the cause of Safari not working as it should. Try turning them off and testing to see if your browser starts functioning properly again. Here’s how to see which ones you’re currently using:

• Click Safari > Settings (or Preferences) > Extensions . 
• Deselect an extension to turn it off, then reload the Safari webpage.  

7. Check iCloud Private Relay

Private Relay is a feature built into iCloud+ that protects your information when you use Safari. If you subscribe to iCloud+, you might have the Private Relay feature turned on. Try reloading the page without that feature. 

• Click View > Reload and Show IP Address .

This menu option will only appear if you have Private Relay turned on. 

8. Test your VPN

If you installed a virtual private network (VPN) or other software that interacts with your network connections, that software could affect Safari. Turn off the VPN or software, then try running Safari. If your web browser starts working properly, adjust the software’s settings so you can use it with Safari.

I agree that it isn’t likely an upload speed issue with those speeds. Not being able to install Google Chrome is another clue. 

What is the software version on your MacBook Air? Which model is it? You can find these details in the Apple () menu on the top left under “About This Mac”.

Thank you for your help.

The upload rate is 8.07 and I don't think its the problem with the internet it's more of a problem with the laptop itself. I am currently sitting with the MacBook and hp and hp works fine with uploading anything, whereas here safari just freezes.

As for other browsers, I have tried downloading google chrome, however whenever I try and open it it says "Google quit unexpectedly"so I am not even able to check it there :c

Common MacBook Air M2 problems and how to fix them

The M2 MacBook Air has been controversial since before its launch, and now that it’s on the market, it continues to drum up criticism.

• Fixing the MacBook Air’s notch

While the M2 MacBook Air hasn’t been out long enough to amass significant issues that require troubleshooting, there are plenty of initial challenges that come with purchasing and owning an M2 MacBook Air, some of which have some easy workarounds to try out.

The M2 MacBook Air continues a design and functionality custom Apple has baked into several of its MacBook Air series products in that it has only one port for an external display. This news, upon the launch of the M2 MacBook Air, has been to the chagrin of many fans who were hoping the laptop would feature at least two external display ports — unfortunately, it’s a limitation of the hardware for now.

To remedy this, though, it’s as simple as buying a Thunderbolt dock or hub, which will expand to feature multiple external display ports.

That would have been the solution with the M1 MacBook Air as well, but because the M2 model now has a MagSafe 3 charging port, those USB-C ports are a bit more freed up. For example, you could plug one external display directly into your M2 MacBook Air through the USB-C port, which allows for a resolution up to 6K. You can then plug one or more external displays in through the dock.

Apple has advertised its 67-watt fast-charging support for the M2 MacBook Air, which offers 50% charging in just 30 minutes. Unfortunately, the accompanying fast-charging adapter doesn’t come standard with the new laptop.

The base model M2 MacBook Air comes with a 30-watt adapter as its standard power source; however, you can upgrade to either a 35-watt fast-charging adapter or the 67-watt fast-charging adapter when purchasing your new laptop for an extra $20. Alternatively, if you upgrade to the higher-end M2 MacBook Air model, which features a 512GB solid-state drive (SSD) and 10-core GPU, the 35-watt or 67-watt fast-charging adapter is included for free.

If you skipped over this option at check out, unfortunately, you may have found out the hard way that your MacBook doesn’t support fast charging.

Outside of purchasing an off-brand fast-charging adapter, you can always go back and purchase one of these faster chargers separately, but they’ll set you back $60 if you don’t bundle them with your purchase at check-out.

The M2 MacBook Air Midnight color is the closest to black and might even favor a shimmery dark blue in the light. However, this option appears to just be a topcoat and has proven to be susceptible to scratches, especially around the MagSafe area and other ports, revealing a silver base color underneath. Over time, the Midnight color option might chip and scratch away across the entire chassis. This has been reported by Reddit users, some saying that their shipment even came with small scratches out of the box .

Alternatively, you might consider choosing a different color. If the Midnight base color is silver, you could choose the silver color option to avoid the scratching issue altogether. Other M2 MacBook Air color options include Starlight and Space Gray, which have not had any complaints about scratching. If you already bought the Midnight color, consider using a protective case to guard against scratches.

Opinions about audio on the M2 MacBook Air might ultimately come down to personal preference. Some reviews of the laptop critiqued its updated design, which features a four-speaker sound system, including two located around the inner hinge near the display and two more speakers that have a hidden style, compared to the visible grilles on the M1 MacBook Air.

YouTuber MaxTech explained that the sound stage on the M2 MacBook Air is lost when the audio bounces off of the display and toward the users, as opposed to the surround-sound experience provided by the prior MacBook Air model. He added that the extra woofers included at the bottom of the laptop don’t provide as much bass as Apple promised.

Other reviews have yielded more positive opinions of audio on the M2 MacBook Air. YouTuber CJ Unplugged admitted the laptop might not have as powerful audio as a MacBook Pro, but he had no issue with the sound stage on the M2 MacBook Air and found it enjoyable for recreational activities, such as watching YouTube. Meanwhile, software developer Alex Ziskind described the laptop’s audio as true and realistic with a flatter frequency response. He stated that he preferred it to the more in-your-face midranges of the M1 MacBook Air and said he could use the M2 MacBook Air speakers for creating simple videos.

Impressions of the speakers in our own review indicate that the speakers are significantly better than competitive laptops, even if they are far off from the sound system featured in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

If you’re concerned that you might have any issues with the M2 MacBook Air audio quality, you might consider sound testing the laptop in-store before purchasing. Even more, keep in mind your AppleCare options and your return window.

Issues with the SSD speeds on the M2 MacBook Air base model have been an ongoing topic since the product’s launch. The base model features a 256GB SSD and an eight-core GPU, in addition to a single NAND chip. This configuration overall has led to major critiques of the M2 MacBook Air base model due to the M1 MacBook Air featuring two NAND chips with the same hardware specs. Additionally, benchmarks revealed that the M2 MacBook Air base model had 50% slower read/write speeds than the M1 in various benchmarks.

Upon closer analysis, some reviewers noted that while read speeds were slower, they were only off by about 500MBps, which might not be noticeable to the average user. It was the write speeds that revealed the major dip in performance between the M2 and M1 MacBook Air models. To opt for this system would mean having to be extremely patient when exporting files.

Otherwise, current options to tackle this issue include potentially avoiding the M2 MacBook Air base model altogether. Many have noted that the M1 MacBook Air is still available for sale, starting at $1,000, and tackles many of the aspects that have been critiqued on the M2 MacBook Air base model.

You can also opt for the higher-end M2 MacBook Air, which features a 512 SSD and 10-core GPU. This model includes a double NAND chip design and has had no reports of speed lagging. Outside of the significant price increase of $1,500 versus the $1,200 cost of the M2 MacBook Air base model, reviews of this variant have been largely positive.

Thermal throttling has been another heavy critique of the M2 MacBook Air, with several popular reviewers commenting on how overheating of the laptop has affected its performance, not only in strenuous tasks but also in typical usage. We measured internal CPU temperatures as high as 108 degrees Celsius in our own review, which is much hotter than comparable laptops are allowed to safely go. You can measure temperatures yourself with free applications like the Hot app from iMazing .

Of course, performance in normal tasks remains very strong, but if you’re looking to maximize what this laptop can do, there are a couple of solutions.

Fix 1: One potential fix for this issue is simply to upgrade the M2 MacBook Air base model from the eight-core GPU to a 10-core GPU for an additional $100 at purchase. This won’t fix the extremely hot internal temperatures, but the extra two cores should expand performance in tasks that can use the GPU.

Just don’t assume this will mean great gaming performance. YouTuber Greg’s Gadgets observed that the spec-upgraded M2 MacBook Air actually performed slower than the base model due to thermal throttling while in a specific gaming scenario.

An iFixit teardown has revealed that the M2 MacBook Air does not have adequate cooling detail within its system. Instead of a heat sink, such as what is seen in the M1 MacBook Air, the newer model has only a thin metal shielding as its heat deflector. This was likely done to keep the laptop thin, but it has resulted in a device that has difficulty keeping internal temperatures under control.

Fix 2: Tech-savvy users can consider implementing this thermal-pad modification developed by MaxTech, which costs just $15. However, even this is just a short-term fix that works for a few minutes before the heat takes over.

Fix 3: Some options that might help with overheating and, in turn, thermal throttling include choosing one of the lighter color options instead of the Midnight color. The Midnight color is more likely to absorb heat, while the lighter options, particularly the silver, are more likely to reflect it, keeping the system cool overall.

Fixing the MacBook Air’s notch

The M2 MacBook Air has been introduced with the controversial top-notch design on its 13.6-inch display. While many might enjoy the larger and brighter display, which houses the laptop’s 1080p webcam in the notch, the feature could be an annoying addition for those who prefer a more uniform look to their Apple laptops.

Some suggest the notch could spearhead the introduction of an important feature like Face ID  for the Mac line as a whole. Meanwhile, others like YouTuber  Tally Ho Tech believe Apple might update the upcoming iPhone 14 to a notch-less Face ID design and is now using those spare parts on the M2 MacBook Air. Either way, the notch is now on this laptop, but if you’re not a fan, there are some steps you can take to make it less conspicuous.

Fix 1: One such trick is using your applications in full-screen mode, which can be done by selecting the Green circle in the upper-left corner of the app window where Apple’s window-control buttons are located. This allows the app to take over the entire screen, covering the notch. When you’re finished using the app, you can either select the Esc key at the top-left corner of the keyboard to bring up the window-control buttons again and select the Green circle again to return to the usual browser size or you can use the  Control + Command + F keyboard shortcut.

Fix 2:  Another trick is adjusting apps that might become obstructed by the notch. You can go to Finder > Applications, then find the app in question. Then, right-click the app to access its Get info option and select Scale to fit below the built-in camera box.  Close the Get info window, open your app, and it should then be adjusted to fit just below the notch.

Fix 3: The TopNotch application is one you can download, and once enabled, it places a bar across the top of your M2 MacBook Air screen, blacking out the top-notch from view. You can download the application for free, and it only requires MacOS 11.0 or higher. The app also works with Dynamic Desktop wallpapers, rounded corners, and external monitors.

Once more, you also have the option of choosing a MacBook that doesn’t feature the top-notch, such as the M1 MacBook Air or M2 MacBook Pro.

Picking out a new MacBook isn't as easy as it used to be.

The hardest choice in the lineup might be between the 15-inch MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Both are now offered with the same M3 chip, despite there being a $300 difference in the base models. But when similarly configured, there's actually only a $100 difference between these two laptops.

The new MacBook Air with M3 chip not only allows you to use it with two external displays, but it has also reportedly addressed a storage problem that plagued the previous M2 model. The laptop now finally has much faster storage performance since Apple has switched back to using two 128GB NAND modules instead of a single 256GB module on the SSD drive.

This was discovered by the YouTuber Max Tech, who tore down the entry-level model of the MacBook Air M3 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. In his tests, thanks to the two NAND modules, the M3 MacBook Air is nearly double faster than the M2 MacBook Air. Blackmagic Disk Speed tests show that the older M2 model with the problematic NAND chip had a 1584.3 Mb/s write speed, and the newer M3 model had 2108.9 Mb/s for the M3 model, for a 33% difference. In read speeds, it was 1576.4 Mb/s on the old model and 2880.2 Mb/s on the newer model.

With surprisingly little fanfare — no spring event this time — Apple has dropped an update to the MacBook Air a bit sooner than expected. The incredibly thin MacBook Air 13- and 15-inch models both received updates to the Apple Silicon M3 chipsets, but that's not all.

There's one surprising new feature in the mix that could make a big difference in purchasing decisions: support for multiple monitors with the display closed. As this was the major complaint of the previous MacBook Air, this change is a pretty big deal. While it still supports only a total of two screens, it's a positive change for those that want to connect to two large, external monitors for work.

Russian IADS Redux Part-7: The Effectors

In the next part of our series on Russia’s strategic integrated air defence system, we look at the kinetic ground-based air defence systems it deploys.

In part-6 of our series on Russia’s strategic Integrated Air Defence System (IADS) we examined the command and control architecture it depends upon. The IADS’ role is ultimately to provide a response to air threats approaching or entering Russian airspace. In Russian air defence doctrine this response is provided using kinetic and/or electronic effects.

The kinetic side of the IADS depends on the Russian Aerospace Force’s (RASF’s) fighters and Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) systems. Sources have shared with Armada that both the fighter and SAM force would be deployed in wartime to protect key Russian strategic targets. Typically, these could include politico-military targets like the Kremlin, the seat of the Russian government in Moscow. Other potential strategic targets include hardened facilities believed to be earmarked for use by the Russian leadership in wartime. One of these facilities is thought to be located at Mount Yamantau, southwest Russia. A back-up facility may exist at Mount Kosvinsky Kaman, western Russia. Russia’s industrial city of Elektrostal, on the eastern outskirts of Moscow, was one of the first locations where the RASF deployed its S-400 (NATO reporting name SA-21 Growler) high-altitude, long-range SAM systems in 2010.

The SAM Systems

Moscow itself is ring-fenced by the RASF’s 53T6 (ABM-3 Gazelle) anti-ballistic missile system. The 53T6 employs SAMs equipped with a ten kiloton (one kiloton is equal to 1,000 tonnes of conventional explosive) nuclear warhead. These missiles would detonate at altitude in proximity to incoming salvos of ballistic missile warheads or formations of hostile aircraft. The logic is that this ‘shotgun’ approach will vaporise, or at least badly damage, these targets.

The S-400 is the mainstay of the RASF SAM force. A typical S-400 battalion includes two batteries. A battery comprises between eight and twelve individual launch vehicles, each equipped with four missile tubes. Thus, an S-400 regiment could have between 56 and 84 individual missiles ready to launch if fully loaded.  Each battery has a command post, a 91N6 (Big Bird) S-band (2.3 gigahertz/GHz to 2.5GHz/2.7GHz to 3.7GHz) 324 nautical mile/nm (600 kilometre/km) range surveillance and tracking radar. The 91N6 is joined by a 96L6E (Cheese Board) C-band (5.25GHz to 5.925GHz) early warning and target acquisition radar. This radar has a range of up to 162nm (300km). A plethora of SAMs can be launched by the S-400 with an array of engagement ranges from 21.6nm (40km) using the active radar homing 9M96E missile. Engagement ranges can reach up to 216nm (400km) using the 40N6E missile which has a reported engagement altitude of 98,425 feet/ft (30,000 metres/m).

Legacy systems used by the RASF include the S-300PS (SA-10B Grumble-B) and S-300PM (SA-10D/E Grumble) which have subtle differences. An S-300PS battery has three Maz-543 launch vehicles each with four launch tubes. The battery is also equipped with a single 5N63S (Flap Lid-B) X-band (8.5GHz to 10.68GHz) fire control radar. An S-300PM battery has a single 36N6E (Flap Lid) X-band/Ku-band (13.4GHz to 14GHz/15.7GHz to 17.7GHz) fire control radar with a 162nm (300km) range. Joining the 36N6E is a 76N6 (Clam Shell) X-band (8.5GHz to 10.68GHz) search and track radar with a 70nm (120km) range. The rest of the battery is comprised of up to eight Kraz-260 launch vehicles each with four tubes. Both the S-300PS/PM are thought to deploy 48N6/E SAMs which have a reported 81nm (150km) range. The S-300PS/PM’s 5V55R missile has an engagement range of up to 48.6nm (90km).

Sources have shared with Armada that RASF SAM batteries are not routinely deployed but may deploy from time-to-time to support exercises or training. The batteries would only be deployed in anger to protect key strategic targets like those discussed above. The sources continued that the task of the SAM units is to provide a protective ‘bubble’ above these targets. Air defence coverage up to 54 nautical miles/nm (100 kilometres/km) altitude and a range radius of 189nm (350km) around the target would be provided. The SAM units would work to attrit any incoming air attack as much as possible. Russian air defence doctrine focuses on safeguarding as many strategic targets as possible in anticipation of an eventual counterattack.

One crucial part of the RASF’s SAM force is its 96K6 Pantsir-S1 (SA-22 Greyhound) combined medium-range SAM and anti-aircraft artillery systems. 96K6 units would deploy with S-300 and S-400 batteries. Their role would be to destroy air-launched weapons like anti-radiation missiles or attack helicopters engaging the batteries Armada’s sources added.

Over the longer term, the RASF is looking to introduce new SAM systems to enhance the strategic IADS in the form of the S-350E and S-500 Prometey long-range, high-altitude SAM systems. The S-350E is mooted as a replacement for the RASF’s S-300PS/PM batteries. Open sources state that a S-350E battery has one 50N6A X-band ground-based air surveillance radar with a range of 215nm (400km). The 50N6A is joined by a single 50K6A mobile command post and up to eight 50P6 launch vehicles. Each launch vehicle can fire 9M96/E or 9M100 SAMs with engagement ranges and altitudes of up to 65nm (120km) and 98,000ft (30,000m) respectively. It was reported in January 2020 that the first S-350E battery had entered service, although a developmental system may have been deployed to support Russia’s military presence in Syria. The VKS could receive twelve S-350E batteries by 2027.

The S-500 is mooted to have a longer engagement range than the S-350E. The S-500 ensemble includes a 91N6A(M) air surveillance and battle management radar. This radar is an enhanced version of the 91N6A radar accompanying the S-400. The S-500’s 96L6TSP target acquisition radar is an enhanced variant of the S-400’s 96L6E. These two systems are accompanied by the 76T6 multimode fire control radar, itself thought to be a derivative of the 92N6. Also forming part of the S-500 ensemble is the 77T6 anti-ballistic missile engagement radar the capabilities of which remain largely unknown in the public domain.

Open sources say that missiles equipping the S-500 could hit targets at ranges of up to 270nm (500km). Russian sources have claimed that the S-500 could engage targets at up to 656,168ft (200,000m) altitude. Russian media, seldom the most reliable source, claim that the first S-500 regiment went on combat duty in October 2021.

The long-term prognosis for the S-500 and S-350E systems remains uncertain. As documented by the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based thinktank, the Russian defence industry is dependent on clandestinely-sourced Western microelectronics for sophisticated weapons systems. Will Western efforts to clamp down on Russia’s access to such technology have an impact on the fortunes of the S-350E and S-500?
