A legendary rock band will celebrate its 50th anniversary at Stadium of Fire

The rock band journey last headlined the provo show in 2015..

(America's Freedom Festival at Provo) The legendary rock band Journey — the core of which consists of, from left, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, guitarist Neal Schon and singer Arnel Pineda — are scheduled to headline Stadium of Fire at Provo's LaVell Edwards Stadium on July 1, 2023.

A fan favorite is returning to Stadium of Fire , Provo’s annual music-and-fireworks extravaganza around the Independence Day holiday.

The veteran rock band Journey will headline the show, set for Saturday, July 1, at LaVell Edwards Stadium on the Brigham Young University campus, organizers of America’s Freedom Festival have announced.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 24, online at freedomfestival.org . Freedom Festival subscribers can start buying tickets at 10 a.m.; the general public can buy tickets starting at noon.

Journey last played Stadium of Fire in 2015, and “we had never seen guests in the stadium so excited,” Jim Evans, the festival’s executive director, said in a statement. “People young and old danced and sang along to every word, to every song. Journey’s hits are so ingrained in our culture.”

Journey is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2023, though guitarist Neal Schon is the only original member still performing with the band. The core of the band consists of Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain (a member since 1980), drummer Deen Castronovo (a member since 1998) and singer Arnel Pineda, whom Schon discovered on YouTube in 2007. Rounding out the band are keyboardist Jason Derlatka and bassist Todd Jensen.

The band’s biggest hits came out between 1978 and 1983, when Steve Perry was their iconic lead singer. Those include “Wheel in the Sky,” “Lights,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Who’s Crying Now,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Open Arms,” “Separate Ways” and “Faithfully.”

The show kicks off with patriotic celebrations, including a flyover by F-35 jets from Hill Air Force Base. It culminates with what’s billed as “the nation’s largest stadium fireworks spectacle.”

The concert is part of America’s Freedom Festival at Provo, the Independence Day week celebrations in Utah County. Events include downtown Provo’s July Fourth Grand Parade and Freedom Days vendor market, the Balloon Fest, and patriotic events at the SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem.

Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary as Stadium of Fire headliner

In a year of nostalgia, it only seems fitting the main stage entertainment for Stadium of Fire is no stranger to the stage.

On Thursday, America’s Freedom Festival at Provo announced that the iconic Bay Area rock band Journey would headline the 2023 Stadium of Fire, just as they first did in 2015.

The band, which formed in 1973, has one of the most prolific catalogs in rock — including 19 Top 40 hits and a string of six straight Top 10 albums between 1980 and 1996.

Journey returns to mark five decades of chart-smashing hits on July 1 at LaVell Edwards Stadium, presented by America’s Freedom Festival at Provo.

The nation’s largest stadium fireworks spectacle will conclude Journey’s performance and an evening of patriotic celebrations — including a flyover by F-35 jets from Utah’s Hill Air Force Base.

Journey lead guitarist Neal Schon performs the National Anthem during the Stadium of Fire concert at Lavell Edwards Stadium in Provo on July 4, 2015.

Stadium of Fire will also be televised to more than one million members of the U.S. military stationed in more than 100 countries via the American Forces Network.

“When Journey headlined Stadium of Fire in 2015, we had never seen guests in the stadium so excited,” said Jim Evans, Executive Director of America’s Freedom Festival. “People young and old danced and sang along to every word to every song. Journey’s hits are so ingrained in our national culture. We are so eager to have them back, and we wish them a huge congratulations on 50 years of incredible music!”

Journey transformed America’s rock and roll scene when they first performed in 1973. Since then, the band has achieved 25 gold and platinum albums which include a litany of iconic hits from “Don’t Stop Believin'” and “Open Arms” to power ballads like “Faithfully.”

With more than 48 million albums sold in the U.S. alone, they are in the top 25 best-selling bands in American history, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Current members include guitarist and vocalist Neal Schon, keyboardist and vocalist Jonathan Cain, lead vocalist Arnel Pineda, drummer and vocalist Deen Castronovo, keyboardist and vocalist Jason Derlatka, and bassist Todd Jensen.

Combined with the Grand Parade and Freedom Days vendor market in downtown Provo on July 4, the Balloon Fest, Patriotic prayer Services, Freedom Awards Gala and the Colonial Festival — joining other patriotic events at the SCERA Center for the Arts in Orem — almost 500,000 people attend Freedom Festival events each year in Utah Valley.

It’s been 15 years since the Jonas Brothers last celebrated the Fourth of July in Utah, but the pop stars are returning to Provo’s LaVell Edwards Stadium this summer to headline the annual Stadium of Fire event.

Jonas Brothers are performing at Stadium of Fire

The brothers will perform at Stadium of Fire, a massive Independence Day celebration that includes a flyover by F-35 jets from Utah’s Hill Air Force Base and a large display of fireworks, on Thursday, July 4.

The Jonas Brothers’ last performance at Stadium of Fire was in 2009, and it also featured a brief set from SHeDAISY, the country group from Magna, Utah, as the Deseret News previously reported.

This year’s concert comes just seven months after the Jonas Brothers brought their worldwide tour to an enthusiastic audience at the Maverik Center in West Valley City.

“This is honestly the loudest Salt Lake has been for us,” Joe Jonas, the band’s middle brother, said during a nearly three-hour concert last fall, which featured early hits such as “Burnin’ Up” and “Year 3000″ and more recent songs like “Sucker” and “Waffle House,” per the Deseret News .

See you this summer at @FreedomFest ! Tickets are on sale Friday, March 22nd. For more information go to https://t.co/K85SlM2a5A 🎇🥳 pic.twitter.com/KYjDU6xx2G — Jonas Brothers (@jonasbrothers) March 16, 2024

Alongside the Jonas Brothers, this year’s Stadium of Fire event will feature Zion’s Youth Symphony & Chorus, a 300-member ensemble based in Las Vegas, the Rockwell Uncommon Skydive Team and “tributes to military and civilian heroes,” according to freedomfestival.org .

Since its start in 1980, Stadium of Fire has welcomed a wide array of performers, including Huey Lewis and the News , Gladys Knight , Carrie Underwood , Kelly Clarkson, The Beach Boys, Brad Paisley and Miley Cyrus, the Deseret News reported.

Journey headlined the event last year, which marked the band’s 50th year, per the Deseret News .

How to get tickets for Stadium of Fire 2024

Tickets for Stadium of Fire go on sale to the general public Friday, March 22, at noon MDT. Tickets can be purchased at freedomfestival.org .

About Journey’s Upcoming Performance at Stadium of Fire 2023 in Provo Utah

The legendary band Journey will be headlining Stadium of Fire 2023 in Provo, Utah on July 1, 2023, for the USA’s premier independence celebration!

Journey started dominating the American rock scene way back in 1973. Since then, they’ve earned 25 gold and platinum albums and 19 top-40 singles in the U.S.

That’s seriously impressive, if you ask me. Some of their biggest hits include “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Separate Ways,” and “Faithfully.”

With over 48 million albums sold in the US, it’s no wonder they’re one of the top 25 best-selling bands in American history.

You better act fast if you want to join in on the fun. Tickets for Stadium of Fire 2023 range from $40-$270, and I’m telling you, they’re selling like hotcakes.
