11 Best Winter Vacation Destinations, According To Travel Experts (2023)
- Activities and Interests
- Destinations
- Seasonal Travel
- Winter Travel
Whether you’d rather escape the cold and hit the beach or embrace it and hit the slopes, we’ve got just the winter destination for you! Below, TravelAwaits has compiled a list of our expert travel writers’ favorite winter getaways. Some are snowbirds who like it hot, while others want winter wonderland vibes. From sun and sand to snow, here is some destination inspiration for this year’s winter getaway.
1. Coastal Mississippi
“If you prefer white sand over white snow, then Coastal Mississippi , home of the nation’s longest man-made beach, is a dream destination. “The Secret Coast” celebrates seafood all year but white shrimp and oysters are in their prime during the winter. Enjoy an early round of golf or explore the Mississippi Coastal Birding Trail . Enjoy art museums and casinos, but don’t miss sunset at the beach. I visited in February 2022.
“Spend a six-hour tour aboard a fishing boat. During the winter, the reefs near to the shore are the main target. Redfish, black drum, and sheepshead are the main attractions, with speckled trout and flounder as understudies. Some restaurants will cook your catch.
Pro Tip: “Buy a Coastal Mississippi Attractions Pass , which provides admission for one to 10 area attractions. The pass comes straight to your phone, ready to use. Attractions include the Biloxi Lighthouse , the fascinating Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum , and the Pascagoula River Audubon Center .” — Roxie Yonkey
2. Frankenmuth, Michigan
“Although a visit to Frankenmuth (an easy 90-minute drive north from Detroit ) is enjoyable year-round , the city known as ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’ really shines at Christmas time . The streets are lined with confectionaries that will draw you in with the tantalizing aroma of fresh fudge and boutiques selling goods that will make quick work of your holiday gift list.
“Make sure to stay in the know about special events in advance of your trip by keeping tabs on what the visitor’s center has planned, from scavenger hunts to ice skating to horse-drawn carriage rides.
“Frankenmuth is also home to the world’s largest Christmas store, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland , which is open all year round, but is especially fun to check out during the holidays. Also filed under don’t-miss experiences are the world-famous chicken dinner at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and checking out the glockenspiel at the Bavarian Inn daily at noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m.
Pro Tips: “ Layer up to stay warm outdoors without getting too sweaty indoors. Plan to eat early and make dining reservations. Frankenmuth rolls up the sidewalks early and trying to find dinner after 7 p.m. might leave you hungry if you haven’t planned ahead.” — Jill Robbins
3. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
“One of my favorite winter vacation destinations is Hilton Head Island , South Carolina. We’re still exploring snowbird destinations , but this is one we keep coming back to. It’s a welcome reprieve from the cold and snow of Minnesota, and we love the 12 miles of sandy beaches, the more than 60 miles of paved bike paths (since we are big fans of biking ), and the abundant seafood and flavors of the Lowcountry. It’s also popular for golf and boutique shopping.
“We like to stay in or near Harbour Town and enjoy the lighthouse and pier (great place to spot dolphins) and see the deluxe yachts in the Yacht Basin. The sunsets over the harbor on Calibogue Sound are the exclamation point on this great destination. Hilton Head has been a favorite of ours for several years and I’m happy to say we have plans to visit again in 2023.” — Joan Sherman
4. Interlaken, Switzerland
“I’m a little biased when it comes to Switzerland . I love how the Swiss live their best life. From floating down the Rhine River at lunchtime to hitting the slopes in the Jungfrau region , Switzerland is an outdoor playground.
“On a recent ski trip to Interlaken , I explored the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe , a mountain-top observation destination 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level. With observation decks, snack bars, and gift shops, Top of Europe is a fun way to spend an afternoon viewing brilliant snow-covered Bernese Alps.
“The Ice Palace , carved with picks and saws from the frozen ice mass in the 1930s, is a frosty and slippery adventure through the mountain. Everything is ice — walls, ceilings, and floors. Ice artists carve stunning works of art in the wall’s nooks along the frozen pathway. Even with hats and mittens, you need a steaming cup of Swiss hot cocoa to round out this frosty adventure.” — Sandi Barrett
5. Lake George, New York
“ Lake George, New York , is one of the few places that lured this Southerner to visit during the winter. I visited four years ago but would love to go back. Expect a lovely place in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains for snowmobiling, dining, special events like ice carving, and outdoor ice bars.
“The Lake George Winter Carnival takes place every weekend in February, with lots of wintery fun. Highlights include chowder and chili cook-offs, fireworks, ATV races, and the highly anticipated outhouse race. Besides the Winter Carnival, enjoy a delicious meal (including creamy Liver pâté) from Caldwell House and drink great beer and trivia Thursday nights at Adirondack Brewery .
“There are two awesome places to stay in Lake George. Holiday Inn Resort Lake George has a welcoming lobby, fireplace, spacious rooms, and an outdoor fire pit. It is also close to ski trails. Or, in nearby Bolton Landing is The Sagamore Resort . Built in 1883, the historic luxury property features award-winning dining and activities.” — Melody Pittman
“ Nevis is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. There’s plenty of Caribbean sunshine to thaw cold bones, but not a lot of tourists, which is one of the things I like most. Here, you’ll have quiet peace of mind. The beauty of Nevis is the inactive volcano, mountains that are often shrouded in mist, and yes, that Caribbean Sea.
“A walk through The Botanical Gardens of Nevis , with tropical plants from around the world and stunning artwork, is serene. One of my favorite places is The Rocks restaurant at the Golden Rock Inn, with its sea views, cascading ponds, and lush gardens. My sanctuary on Nevis was the Four Seasons Resort on Pinney’s Beach. As I sat seaside, nestled by rocks, watching the sunset at the resort’s Mango restaurant, it confirmed I was indeed in paradise.” Sheryl Nance-Nash
7. New Orleans, Louisiana
“The winter months are the perfect time to visit the fabulous city of New Orleans , Louisiana, and my favorite time is the week after Christmas. The mild temperatures during the winter months mean the weather is usually ideal for exploring the streets of the French Quarter and Garden District. Enjoy eating beignets on the patio of Cafe Du Monde before walking through the famous Jackson Square . Don’t miss wandering down Royal Street , admiring the gorgeous antique shops, and popping into the fun and unique art galleries that line the street.
“The winter season in New Orleans also means fewer crowds, which also equates to lower prices for lodging. Winter also brings about numerous concerts, festivals , and the opening season of Carnival . Of course, if you are visiting around the holidays, the city is also aglow with holiday lights and festive celebrations, making winter in New Orleans even more spectacular.” — Michelle Snell
8. New Smyrna Beach, Florida
“When winter comes, I’m for staying warm. That’s why I just visited New Smyrna Beach . There’s a variety of things to do. Old Fort Park is a mystery-laden coquina ruins. The most accepted theory is that it was remains of a home built for one of Dr. Andrew Turnbull’s partners on their huge indigo plantation that was the first settlement here. Newer Sugar Mill Ruins once stood on the Cruger and DePeyster Plantation. New Smyrna Museum of History tells the history of New Smyrna Beach. Housed in a restored 19th-century church, the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum offers a glimpse of African American history in New Smyrna.
“ Marine Discovery Center showcases local marine life. In Canaveral National Seashore , take a Viking Eco-Tours kayak tour, visit Turtle Mound, a shell midden dated to 1000 BCE, and visit Eldora, the remnants of a community from 1877. There are lots of dining choices. For lodging, check out Victoria 1883 bed and breakfast.” — Kathleen Walls
9. Ogden, Utah
“I visited Ogden, Utah , last December, and the minute we arrived, I fell in love. It’s the gateway to challenging ski resorts like Powder Mountain and Snowbasin , and plenty of places to cross-country ski or snowshoe nearby. One stroll down Historic 25th Street and you’re transported to a ‘Wild West’ town with tons of history. It’s the place where the Transcontinental Railroad combined the Union and Pacific Railroads. The storefronts from the late 1800s are intact, but house eclectic boutiques and incredible dining venues. The history, art scene, and culture here are combined with wintry activities. It’s the best of both worlds for ski enthusiasts and foodies.” — Jeanine Consoli
10. San Antonio, Texas
“Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So to escape the winter chill in North Texas, I like to travel south in my car. There are several things to do in San Antonio in the winter — one being the San Antonio River Walk . It’s always lovely for a nice stroll and guided boat tours operate year-round. Restaurants are booming this time of year as well, so if you decide to go, you still may have a wait time.
“Also, the Natural Bridge Caverns are nice to visit in the winter because it’s not so humid in the cave. If you’ve never been to the San Antonio Missions , including the Alamo, winter is a great time to visit for a great Texas History lesson. It’s not as crowded during this time.
Pro Tip: “Bring a heavy jacket if planning to take part in a guided riverboat tour. It does get a little chilly riding on the water.” — Kim Croisant
11. Tenerife, Canary Islands
“The largest of the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Tenerife seemed like paradise when I reviewed photos online, booking my flight soon afterward. It was 2004 when in Mosul, Iraq, in a war zone working an 84-hour workweek when not hiding in a bomb shelter, I needed a pinch of peace and paradise. My condo at the Peria Gris (Pearly Grey) in Callao Salvaje along the southern coast of Tenerife was perfect with its small kitchen, balcony looking out over the ocean, and location in a thriving downtown business area for shopping, dining, and just hanging out.
“The scenery of dramatic cliffs falling straight into the raging turquoise ocean was truly spectacular. Renting a car in three precious days, I drove every winding road along the mountains, hiked trails near the snow-covered Mount Teide volcano , devoured amazing Spanish cuisine and wine, and found peace in paradise. A lot has changed since then, but Tenerife is still paradise no matter what time of year.” — Ann Bush

Connecting the island to more than 35 major cities across Europe and the Mediterranean. working with partner airlines, and offering convenient connections to many more destinations in North America, North Africa and the Middle East, Air Malta has been providing a genuine Maltese experience to all its passengers. THE PAST 1974 proved to be a momentous year for our country. Air Malta commenced operations on 1 April, and Malta declared itself a republic later in the year. The setting up of Air Malta was one of the first signs of a young nation fostering its identity and finding a new international voice. By creating reliable air links to and from key European cities, Air Malta was able to support the economic and cultural development of the Islands. As standard bearer for the nation, their remit has always been that of an ambassador for the Maltese Islands. Merħba AIR MALTA THE AIRLINE OF THE MALTESE ISLANDS.
ROCS GROUP, ST ANNE STREET, FLORIANA WWW.ROCSHOLIDAYS.COM | 2015 1515 | [email protected]
THE PRESENT Modern day Malta is a cosmopolitan country which blends time-honoured Mediterranean culture with a spirited, contemporary vibe. Just as the country has changed, so has the airline. It embarked on a major review of strategy and operations. As part of the process, Airmalta has in fact launched a fresh brand identity. A colourful new livery which can be seen across the fleet. The new look is more than skin deep. It reflects accurately a more pro active role as the destination airline of the Maltese Islands; a company dedicated 100 per cent to serving the Islands’ visitors and residents. The mission is even more ambitious, the airline aim to become recognised as one of the world’s leading destination airlines. THE FUTURE More than ever, Air Malta is at the heart of the Islands and its people echo a shared sense of optimism for the future. The daily mission is to work together in achieving exceptional standards of travel experiences. The pride in doing a good job for customers is key. The future lies in making it even easier to discover the Maltese Islands and to return home with an airline that has a genuine calling in serving your interests and those of Malta.

6 Luxury Travel Trends That Will Be Huge in 2023
From hot new destinations to putting art ahead of food (really!), welcome to a fabulous new year of journeys near and far.
Japan, Italy, and Other Trending Destinations
“Japan!” says Jack Ezon, founder and managing partner at New York-based Embark Beyond , when he considers 2023’s hottest destinations. “Pre-COVID it was on one of the steepest growth trajectories; now people are clamoring to return,” he says, adding that one of the world’s hottest ski destinations for 2023 is Niseko on the country’s north island of Hokkaido.
Also hot: “Italy beyond the obvious,” he says: “Look at the regions of Piedmont, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna to pop up as the new Tuscany, fueled by great new properties like Casa di Langa .” Ezon also names Montenegro back on the hot list, thanks to the new One&Only Portonovi drawing eyes (and yachts) to this corner of the Med, Peru trending for foodies and outdoor adventurers, Tanzania topping safari destinations, and the beautiful new Kisawa Sanctuary pulling focus to Mozambique as “the post-safari retreat du jour.”
The Rise of Solo Travel
When it comes to grown-up luxury travelers, the allure of going solo has never been greater. Virtuoso recently reported that among its travelers aged 65+, interest in single travel went from 4 percent in 2019 to 18 percent in 2022. And the offerings for solo explorers just get better and better, whether it’s the Solo Package (literally!) at Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives or a regenerative weekend of yoga, sound baths, hydro therapies, spa treatments, and more at Shou Sugi Ban House in the Hamptons .
Private Yachts Seas the Day
While a boat of one’s own (even if for only a week) has always been a hallmark of luxury travel, the world of private yacht excursions has never been more creative—or alluring. Cases in point: Kontiki Expeditions’ superyacht plying the Ecuador coast , and EYOS Expeditions , which offers superyacht excursions in Antarctica.
“Many people just didn’t realize it was possible to go to Antarctica via a private yacht,” says EYOS CEO Ben Lyons, “but it has travelers thinking how they can experience a destination in new ways,” including a fully customized experience and a boatload—as it were—of privacy.
For those who prefer their adventure in a glass, Belmond will debut Coquelicot, A Belmond Boat, Champagne in May 2023: a restored river barge plying the region’s waterways in partnership with Maison Ruinart, the world’s oldest Champagne house. On offer: a weeklong private charter starting at €82,000 (approximately $79,500).
Embracing the Off Season
After the pandemic travel pause, the surge in luxury travel to beloved destinations like the Amalfi Coast and Greece pushed demand into the shoulder seasons like never before, and hotels responded by opening earlier in the spring and welcoming guests often all the way to Christmas—a move that seems to be sticking.
“At first, travelers were so anxious to get back out there as soon as destinations were opening up, they were ready to go right away, even if it wasn’t the typical season for that destination,” says travel advisor Beth Washington, founder of Washington, D.C.-based travel agency Getaway Guild .
Washington points also to African safaris now stretching beyond classic seasons of winter for South Africa and July through October travel for East Africa: “Travelers can have wonderful game viewing on safari most of the year if you work with a safari specialist,” she says. If the pandemic taught us anything, Washington says, “it’s that the ability to travel is not promised, and there is no time like the present to take that dream trip rather than wait for peak season.”
Art Is the New Food
Travel centered around art is poised to replace culinary travel as a leading luxury travel trend, says Jack Ezon, who points to Arles, Berlin, Havana, Paris, Milan, Miami, Mexico City, Marfa, Cape Town, and Marrakech as top destinations.
And the hotels! Airelles Le Grand Contrôle recently opened in the heart of France’s Château de Versailles and offers private tours and exclusive access to the Domaine de Trianon and the gardens. In the Scottish highlands, the Swiss gallerists Manuela and Iwan Wirth have created a stunning hotel-gallery hybrid at The Fife Arms (including more than 14,000 works including high-impact Picassos, Freuds, and Richters). In Marrakesh, Royal Mansour offers guests complimentary tickets to the stunning Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech . And creative art partnerships are the new Michelin-starred chef: In Italy, Belmond has joined with acclaimed Galleria Continua to create MITICO , four garden-based art installations (including Cameroonian artist Pascale Marthine Tayou’s stunning Les Routes du Paradis at Grand Hotel Timeo on Sicily) that will return anew in 2023. “Whether it’s cities with art festivals, cities with an art scene, or art shopping trips,” sums Ezon, “art is definitely the new food.”
Traveling to Gather
While solo travel is surging, particularly for the 65+ set, creative getaways for groups is top of mind at myriad luxury destinations, particularly among younger travelers (according to Virtuoso, solo travel interest among the 18-34 set dropped from 12 percent in 2019 to 6 percent in 2022).
“Beyond multi-gen trips, people are flocking around the world in groups,” says Ezon. “Groups of ladies. Groups of guys. Groups of a half dozen couples. Friends who like botany, fitness instructors bringing their fans to some remote place for fitness. Divorced ladies out for revenge. You name the affinity; people are traveling together. We are even seeing five and six families traveling together.” With a surge in villa offerings at hotels and resorts as well as private yacht charters, it’s never been more easier—or more fabulous—to gather together, the world over.

The Best Places to Visit This Winter for a Sun-Soaked Escape
By Hayley Maitland and Boutayna Chokrane
It's that time of year: We’re officially past the solstice—meaning some winter sun is most definitely in order. Here, find the best places to visit this winter for a much-needed hit of vitamin D.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Eden Roc at Cap Cana , the sole Relais & Châteaux property in the Dominican Republic, is an exclusive beachfront hotel on the white sands of Punta Cana, making it the ideal winter getaway. Go snorkeling in the wonders of the Caribbean Sea, embark on a zip-line eco-tour, or set sail on a catamaran into the sunset. The resort and beach club also boasts an equestrian center, tennis courts, and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Punta Espada, an 18-hole par-72 golf course.
Seeking a wellness retreat? Eden Roc’s “Lifestyle” program beckons with Natura Bissé spa treatments, fitness classes, and serene activities like meditation, hypnosis, and beekeeping. When night falls, have drinks at Riva Bar with live piano music, and then dinner at La Palapa, perched on the oceanfront point. Plus, amid all that opulence, this sanctuary remains family-friendly: Enjoy complimentary bikes, culinary and mocktail-making classes, and a cinema night, among an endless list of other amenities.
Cape Town, South Africa
A 20-minute road trip from Stellenbosch favorite, Babylonstoren , Sterrekopje’s 11 rooms are set within 50 hectares of Edenic grounds—complete with vineyards and orchards where guests are invited to gather fruit at sunrise each day. (Even the spa products here are made using spices, herbs and other wonders from the gardens—think calming wildflower baths and olive-pip skin scrubs.) Founded by Dutch partners Nicole Boekhoorn and Fleur Huijskens (who also happen to be a couple), this is a place for a reset without restrictions; you can trek up Sterrekopje mountain in the morning before ending the day with a farm-to-table feast. Much is written about the activities on offer here, and with good reason—everything from pottery classes to yoga and breath work sessions are available—but it’s the interiors that truly won us over. A collaborative effort by founder Nicole and interior designer Greg Mellor, every room is filled with personal touches; take the antique writing boxes and stationery in each one, with guests encouraged to journal throughout their stay. Even if you only check in for the shortest two-night “journey” offered at Sterrekopje , you leave feeling a decade younger.
Bali, Indonesia
By Kate Lloyd
By Lauren Murdoch-Smith
By Margaux Anbouba
If you’re looking to reconnect with nature after months cooped up indoors, set your sights on Buahan, A Banyan Tree Escape from March onwards, when the rainy season nears its end. Constructed entirely from recycled wood, the 16 mountainside lodges, or balés, at this eco-resort 40 minutes north of Ubud feature neither windows nor doors, meaning guests fall asleep in four-posters overlooking the forest canopy and soak in copper bathtubs while fireflies dance above them in the dusk. (There are also dedicated “Hideaway” spots scattered across the property, where guests are encouraged to meditate surrounded by birdsong and frangipani.) The food offering, meanwhile, aims to be zero waste, with Balinese chef Eka Sunarya heading up The Open Kitchen, a largely plant-based restaurant that champions produce from hyperlocal farms: think nourishing moringa soup, presented in a coconut shell, or vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over charcoal. As for the Toja Spa? It’s spread across several bamboo pavilions, all of which overlook the Ayung River. Opt for a restorative scrub—done with rice and ginger—or a meditation session at the foot of a private waterfall.
South Malé Atoll, Maldives
A drop of sand in the blue expanses of the South Atoll, Naladhu Private Island is the best place to live out Richard Branson fantasies—even in a crowded market of ultra-luxurious hotels. Just a 40-minute speedboat journey from Malé and yet a world unto itself, there are just 20 neo-colonial suites here, all of which come with 24/7 butler service (or Kuwaanu), and give out onto the water, where fish (and, yes, the occasional shark) dart through the shallows. You would be forgiven for never leaving the privacy of your own room; celebrated sustainable architect and designer Yuji Yamazaki masterminded a refurbishment in 2021, with every suite now boasting outdoor showers rimmed with lush tropical greenery; turquoise swimming pools where guests can enjoy floating breakfasts (a rite of passage in the Maldives) while the waves crash in the background; and deep standalone baths, which your Kuwaanu will fill with rose petals if the mood strikes.
It’s worth braving the grueling two-minute stroll to the western side of the island to try the cuisine at The Living Room; the off-menu policy at Naladhu means you can go wholly off-piste, if nothing listed takes your fancy (although it would be a mistake to skip the Maldivian curry with lobster). And if you’re worried about cabin fever? Two other resorts owned by the Anantara group— Dhigu and Veli —are accessible via lengthy overwater walkways (although only residents are allowed on Naladhu). Get there before Daphne from The White Lotus checks in.
Weligama, Sri Lanka
Last year proved rocky for Sri Lanka, but the country is welcoming tourists once again. This is one of those winter destinations that truly has it all, and you would be hard-pressed to find a lovelier place from which to explore it than Malabar Hill . Opened in 2022 on a rewilded cinnamon plantation just north of small town Weligama, its villas are spread across a 33-acre estate, which is home to more than 500 species, including mongooses and Malabar hornbills. The décor is a celebration of Indian craftsmanship and Moorish design, complemented by views of rice paddies, the Indian Ocean, and lush forests. It would be worth visiting just to have sundowners at the teak hotel bar before heading out onto the terrace for a local fish curry.
Tulum, Mexico
There’s a host of design-focused stays launching in the Yucatán in 2023, but Casa Chablé may well be the most impressive. To begin with, it’s set in the UNESCO-protected Sian Ka’an reserve south of Tulum, whose cenotes, reefs, and jungles are home to everything from ocelots to manatees. Powered by renewable energy, each of its 10 rooms is comprised from sustainable, local materials such as Zapote wood and Galarza stone—meaning the exteriors blend seamlessly into the landscape—while interior designer Paulina Moran has filled each room with natural textures. The majority of guests arrive by boat—it’s a 30-minute trip through the mangroves surrounding the resort to get to its private dock—but the islet on which the hotel’s 10 rooms stand can be reached via car or helicopter, too. There’s lots to do here , from star gazing to spear-fishing—but when the beach is this paradisiacal, why do anything else but laze?
Queensland, Australia
Sometimes it’s hard to figure out where to begin with Australia—three million square miles of diverse geographical wonders—but there’s no going wrong with a reservation at Silky Oaks Lodge . Reopened at the close of 2021 by the same team behind Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge , the 40-room escape is nestled amongst the blue quandong trees and “wait-a-while” vines of the Daintree Rainforest, whose tropical mangroves and billabongs date back an estimated 180 million years. Each of its treehouses is perched above the Mossman River, over which turquoise Ulysses butterflies flit through the ylang ylang-scented air; it’s worth the price of a room just to recline in your private hammock, listening to the roar of the cicadas with one of the hotel’s specialty gin-based cocktails in hand. If you do nothing else during your visit, make sure to at least join a guided First Nations tour, in which Kuku Yalanji guides introduce visitors to the history—and countless natural marvels—of the Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation.
Bahia, Brazil
Trancoso has lured an haute bohemian crowd since the ’70s, and 50 years later, the appeal of this Bahia hotspot has yet to diminish (helped by its 15 miles of gold sand beach, with fewer crowds than Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana). Enter the Fasano group, whose 40-room Trancoso property opened a 20-minute drive from the historic Quadrado at the beginning of 2022. Its elegant white bungalows are spread out over a nearly 750-acre property, a third of which constitutes a designated nature reserve—and the majority of suites offer views of Itapororoca beach from their rooftop decks. You can and should spend most of your trip in the Atlantic surf—taking a break occasionally for fresh ceviche and caipirinhas on the sand at the hotel’s beach kiosk—but there’s also a pool in view of the waves that’s worth your attention (and guaranteed to be lined with genetically blessed Brazilians sunning themselves in the 86-degree warm weather). If you missed out on Cancún in its heyday, make a point of visiting before the year is out.
Marrakech, Morocco
Just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London, Marrakech is a mainstay on lists of the best places to visit in winter, and with good reason. Temperatures in Yves Saint Laurent’s erstwhile home hover in the seventies throughout the wintertime, and any chillier days can happily be whiled away indulging in some retail therapy in the souk or visiting world-class museums such as MAP Marrakech , home to more than 3,000 exquisite pieces of jewelry from around the world, or the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden . The city’s grand dame hotels— Royal Mansour and El Fenn —remain as sumptuous as ever, but for something a little different, consider heading 45 minutes outside of the city proper to Caravan Agafay . The latest opening from the Habitas group is surrounded by the lunar landscape of the Agafay desert, with the Atlas mountains visible from its eco-luxe Berber-inspired tents.
San José, Costa Rica
Frequent travelers to Central America often sing the praises of Nicaragua, Costa Rica’s more laidback, affordable neighbor—but a trip to Hacienda AltaGracia is a good way to remind yourself why the world fell in love with Costa Rica in the first place. Opened in November 2021, this 50-room hotel on an old coffee farm in the foothills of the Talamancas is the embodiment of pura vida : a day here might include horseback riding through the Arabica trees and sugarcane fields of the hacienda, taking a river bath in the Calientillo River (with optional wild bergamot massage), or undertaking a birdwatching trip in search of caracaras and quetzals. In every direction, the landscape is mind-blowing in its beauty. (It’s no surprise to learn that AltaGracia is actually located beside one of the world’s Blue Zones, a place where the average human life is significantly longer than normal.) The real selling point here, though, is the 20,000-square-foot spa , designed in imitation of a greenhouse and filled with moss, bougainvillea, and ferns. Every visit begins with a Casa de Agua treatment, with herbal and local clay exfoliation, before guests move on to everything from maderoterapia—a wooden massage technique practiced across the region—to gong baths.

By city rail
The City Rail connects areas where there are no metro lines. Connects with the subway at the Moscow railway station. It has 2 lines: Sormovskaya and Priokskaya. The fare by train costs 28 rubles. According to the Citicard Transport Card, the fare is 26 rubles. Also by train you can get to the nearest suburb, or transfer to suburban trains to Dzerzhinsk, Bor, Semenov or Arzamas.
By bus and trolleybus
As of May 2017 in each district of the city there are several city bus routes. The number of trolleybus routes is much less. In one district of the city there are 1-2 trolleybus routes. Trolleybus routes are completely absent in the Leninsky city district. It is worth noting that trolleybuses do not connect the Lower City to the Upper. This is because the trolleybuses do not have enough power to climb the mountain.
The trolleybus network is divided into 3 parts:
- The upper trolleybus network (it unites all three districts - Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky and Prioksky) with a turning circle on the Minin Square, near the Kremlin.
- The lower trolleybus network (connects Kanavinsky, Moskovsky and Sormovsky districts)
- The Avtozavod trolleybus network (connects all the distant sleeping microdistricts among themselves)
Throughout the city, land trams run. The longest route of all is 417. It connects the outskirts of Avtozavodsky district with the Moskovsky Rail Terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The route passes through the sleeping areas (approximately 75% of the way). Also in remote neighborhoods there are routes of several more trams, but in most cases, they are in the Upper City. By the way, you can reach there by tram 27 or 10 directly from the Moscow railway station.
By marshrutka
Marshrutkas do not stop at every stop. To indicate your intention to exit a marshrutka, press a button and to indicate your intention to enter a marshrutka en-route, you need to wave your hand.
Nizhny Novgorod has not very developed bicycle infrastructure. Special bike paths exist only on the Upper-Volga and Lower-Volga embankments and on Rozhdestvenskaya Street.
The upper city is very hilly and full of steep inclines and even many locals will get off their bicycles and push their bikes up the hill by foot. Drivers can be reckless and pose a danger to cyclists. The roads can also be icy during the winter. City cyclists solve this problem by replacing summer tires with winter tires.
Also, in 2017 the implementation of a new integrated transport scheme of the city began. It provides for a large number of bicycle paths in the Upper City (including on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street) and in the Lower City.

Nizhny Novgorod has topped all other Russian cities in a recent ranking of European cities
Analytical agency ‘Numbeo’ recently ranked European cities in terms of quality of life. Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod (with a population of more than 1.2 mln) took 40th place out of 72, overtaking not only the capitals of Great Britain, France and Italy, but also Moscow (ranked 59th), St. Petersburg (64th), Yekaterinburg (71st) and Novosibirsk (72nd).
Nizhny Novgorod is one of the oldest cities on the Volga River, famous for its stone kremlin and old merchant houses. Today, it is also a major industrial center of the country. ‘GAZ’ vehicles are produced there.
When compiling the rankings, analysts took into account safety, health care, the ratio of real estate value to income, traffic jams, climate, as well as other parameters.
‘Numbeo’ is the world’s largest cost and quality of life database and is based in Belgrade, Serbia.
