How to Use ‘Travel Now, Pay Later’ Services When Planning a Trip

After more than a year of sticking close to home, travelers are ready to budget for a vacation once again. But if the desire to travel outpaces your finances, a growing number of “travel now, pay later” services are making immediate vacations possible.

“Services such as Klarna and Afterpay are giving us the flexibility to afford that extra-nice hotel or to stay on vacation that extra day by staggering payments and slicing them into four rather than requiring one upfront payment,” says Michelle Halpern, the founder of the Live Like It's the Weekend travel blog.

Here’s how it works: If you find a trip, flight, or hotel and see the Klarna or Afterpay option, you can undergo a 30-second soft credit check, either through the apps or online, to determine the amount you qualify to pay in installments. You make the first payment—one-quarter of the total purchase—and get your trip or flight confirmation immediately. The service charges the remaining interest-free installments of the total every two weeks directly from your preferred payment method until the total is paid. You secure the deal instantly, there’s no impact on your credit score and there are no fees. However, using these services doesn’t help build credit and their charges are initiated automatically, which means that even if your linked bank account gets low or your credit card is near its limit, those charges are still going to happen.

“Afterpay saved my life on many occasions,” says Shawn Richards, a U.K.-based expedition coordinator for Ultimate Kilimanjaro, who spent years as a nomad. Richards recalls times when he’d decide spontaneously to go somewhere new, but wouldn’t have the ready funds. “Afterpay was like having a virtual father, as it gave me the kick I needed; I had to find a job in my destination very quickly to be able to pay for how I got there,” he says. Four years ago Richards used Afterpay to score the $1,400 open-ended flight to Tanzania that led to working with his current tour company.

The idea is catching on fast: Afterpay reported that it’s signed up more than 13 million users in North America as of January 2021. Different retailers have partnerships with different payment systems, so you might need accounts with multiple service providers to build the trip you want. For example, Airbnb offers payment through Zip (formerly Quadpay), while you can pay for trips on Booking.com and Expedia through Klarna. Here are some other things to consider.

Should I spring for a pricier trip?

While these services can be a great way to avoid credit card debt and the interest that can come with it, financial pros caution against spending more than your budget allows.

“Just because you have more time to spend your money doesn’t mean you have more money to spend,” says Tony Palazzo, CFA and Managing Partner at Berkeley Capital Partners & Access Private Capital in Atlanta , who notes that pay in four services may ease the psychological impact of a purchase, but that doesn’t mean you’re paying less. “You need to ask yourself, ‘If I can’t afford it now, how will I afford it within a [six]-week time period?’” he says.

Palazzo is currently seeing his financial services clients plan to take bigger trips , either because they haven’t spent money on travel during the pandemic or they’re rewarding themselves for a difficult 2020. “‘Revenge spending’ is a real thing, and travel appears to be a popular target,” he says.

When he was a nomad traveling the world , Richards tried to keep his budget conservative by thinking of Afterpay like borrowing money from a friend. “Then you are likely to only borrow what you need, and not more,” he says.

How to maximize the benefits

When you see an ultra-low price on a flight to your dream destination or an unheard-of deal on a hotel, services like Klarna and Afterpay can help you book it before it’s gone. “Time pressure to lock in a great deal is common with travel,” Palazzo says. “Offers appear at a moment’s notice and often require you to act quickly. Having quick access to the cash you might not have readily on hand, could better position you to nab that heavily discounted red-eye to Paris .”

Dolores Mason-Stokes, a Chicago-based plus-size fashion and travel blogger, used Klarna to book an upcoming trip to Catalina Island in California, and she’s planning to use it again to pay for a 2022 anniversary trip to Bali . She says that using the service strategically makes it easy to budget for a bigger trip because she’ll buy one element (like a flight) and pay it off before adding the next (like a hotel). “It doesn’t matter if it’s flights, transportation, places to stay or even excursions, you can pay through [Klarna],” Mason-Stokes says. “You could book an entire trip abroad.”

Should you use Klarna for travel?

Uncover the truth about using Klarna for travel expenses with our comprehensive review. Make an informed decision for a seamless payment experience.

Should you use Klarna for travel?

In this post:

A brief overview of klarna, pros of using klarna for travel, cons of using klarna for travel, why saving up for a vacation is a better option.

Are you looking for a way to pay for your next vacation without breaking the bank? As an innovative, easy-to-use buy now pay later platform, Klarna may sound like an appealing option. After all, you can book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more without worrying about upfront payments or hidden fees.

Sounds great, right?

But before you reach for your debit card, it’s important to be aware of Klarna’s drawbacks to ensure it’s the most suitable choice. In this article, we’ll explore Klarna’s pros and cons, why saving for a vacation is an alternative worth considering, and how Accrue can help you reach your travel savings goals faster.

Klarna is a Swedish payment platform that lets you buy now and pay later for goods and services. Since its launch in 2005, Klarna has grown rapidly and now provides payment solutions to over 150 million customers across 500,000 merchants in 45 countries.

It works like a credit card but without a hard credit check. Instead, Klarna runs a soft credit check to determine your eligibility. Klarna offers four payment plans, so you can customize your payment schedule to suit your budget .

  • Pay in 3: Available for UK residents only, this plan allows travelers to split their payment into three equal installments over 30, 60, and 90 days — interest-free. The first payment is due when booking and the remaining two payments are automatically taken from your account 30 and 60 days later.
  • Pay in 4: This plan allows you to split your payment into four equal installments over 60, 90, 120, and 150 days, also interest-free. You pay the first installment at the time of booking, and the remaining three payments are automatically deducted from your account every 30 days.
  • Pay in 30: This plan allows you to book now and pay for your vacation over 30 days interest-free. You won’t incur any late fees if you pay on time.
  • Pay Now: This plan allows you to pay for your vacation in full at the time of booking. You can use SOFORT bank transfer or direct debit to pay, and you won’t incur any interest or late fees.

How does Klarna work?

Before we jump into the pros and cons of this service, let’s take a look at the process of using Klarna to shop for travel:

  • Search for flights: Shop from over 600 airlines with Alternative Airlines to find the best flight for your budget. Enter your destination, travel dates, and the number of people traveling for customized results.
  • Select Klarna as your payment option: At checkout, enter your passenger details, scroll down, select Klarna as your payment option, and then continue to payment.
  • Choose a payment plan: Select the installment plan that works best for you, enter your payment details, and confirm your booking. You will receive an instant approval decision within minutes.
  • Get your flight tickets: After approval, Klarna will send your e-tickets and booking confirmation to your email. Pay your first installment, and you’re all set for your trip!

The seamless, hassle-free checkout process is why many travelers are now turning to Klarna as their preferred payment platform for travel. But before you book your vacation with Klarna, it’s essential to understand the pros and cons, which we’ll dive into in the next section.

The number of Klarna customers in the U.S. is projected to hit 49.3 million in 2026 , up from 14.1 million in 2020, so there’s plenty that’s appealing about using Klarna for travel. Let’s look at a few of the pros:

Flexibility in payment options

Klarna offers multiple payment plans, so you can customize your repayment schedule to suit your budget. You can spread the cost of your trip over three or four installments (depending on your location), pay in 30 days, or pay for it in full upfront. Plus, all Klarna plans are interest-free, so you don’t have to worry about extra costs or late fees.

Ability to split payments and manage budgets

Using Klarna to pay for your vacation lets you easily manage your budget. You can split the cost of flights , hotels, and other travel expenses into smaller, more affordable installments. This way, you can ensure you don’t overspend on your vacation and still have money left for other essentials. The Klarna app also lets you manage your spending and keep track of all transactions in one place.

Protection against fraud and unauthorized transactions

Fraud and unauthorized transactions are major concerns when booking travel online. According to a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) report, identity theft, phishing, and credit card fraud accounted for $8.8 billion in losses in 2022 . Klarna has robust fraud prevention measures to protect your data and ensure safe payments. All transactions are monitored 24/7 to detect unusual activity, and all payment information is encrypted to keep your data safe.

Although Klarna’s flexible payment options, budget-friendly plans, and secure payment system make it an attractive option for travelers, there are some potential drawbacks to consider, including:

Potential high-interest rates and fees

Klarna’s interest-free payment plans are designed to give you more flexibility and affordability when booking travel. However, if you miss a payment or exceed the deadline, you may be subject to late fees or interest charges. Choose a payment method that fits your budget and make timely installment payments to avoid extra costs.

Limitations on eligible travel providers

Klarna works with several travel providers, including airlines, hotels, and car rental companies. You may be unable to use Klarna for your favorite airline or hotel chain, which can be limiting. Check out eligible providers before booking your next trip to ensure you get the best deal.

Impact on credit scores

Late payments, missed payments, and high balances can hurt your credit score. Klarna runs a soft credit check at the time of booking to determine your eligibility which doesn’t affect your credit score but late payments and high balances, when reported to the three major credit bureaus , can knock a few points off your score. To keep your credit in good health, avoid taking out more than you can afford and set autopay for timely monthly payments.

Availability and acceptance of Klarna in different countries

Klarna is available in 45 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. However, the availability and acceptance of Klarna varies by country and even between retailers in the same country. Research before you shop to ensure the store or provider you’re buying from accepts Klarna as a payment method.

Buy now pay later options like Klarna , Uplift, and PayPal Credit can be convenient and appealing — especially if you’re short on cash. However, it may not always be the best option for your finances in the long run.

Saving up for a vacation may take more time and effort, but it can reduce your risk of getting into debt and help you stay on top of your budget. Here are the top reasons why saving up is the better option:

You can earn rewards through Accrue Savings

Accrue Savings is a savings program that helps you save for a vacation and rewards you with money you can use toward purchases from your favorite partnering brands. Once you register for a free account, you can choose a goal, such as a vacation or family trip, and start funding your wallet with automatic deposits.

There is no set minimum or maximum amount per deposit, so you can save as little or as much as you want, and you have the flexibility to change, pause, or stop deposits at any time.

Check out our travel partners like CheapOair to see how Accrue can help you save money on flights and vacation packages.

You have more protection from overspending

Buy now pay later options give you access to instant funds, which can lead to impulse purchases and overspending. You may be tempted to upgrade your accommodations or book a more expensive flight than you can afford, leaving you with a hefty bill at the end of your trip.

Saving up for a vacation gives you more control over your budget and helps keep your spending in check. You’ll have a better idea of how much you can afford and be able to come up with a more realistic budget for your trip.

No high-interest rates or fees

High-interest rates and late fees are a surefire way to rack up debt. Paying off your vacation in installments might seem like a good idea, but you could face hefty fees if you miss payments or don’t stick to your payment schedule.

Saving up for your next trip eliminates the risk of interest and fees, giving you more flexibility and peace of mind. Besides, the joy of paying for the entire trip with cash in full is priceless! Imagine sitting down to fabulous meals and enjoying excursions without the question, “how am I going to pay this back?” repeating in the back of your mind. You can focus on living in the moment and making incredible memories knowing there aren’t any giant travel bills waiting for you when you get home.

You’re in control of your destiny

Unlike pay-later flights and vacations, saving up gives you more control of your finances. You decide on how much or how little you want to spend on your vacation package and how quickly you want to save up for it.

You can adjust your budget whenever needed and make informed decisions about your travel purchases. Saving up for a vacation also gives you more time to compare prices and find the most budget-friendly deal.

Start saving for your dream vacation with Accrue Savings

Klarna and other pay-later options are attractive options for cash-strapped travelers. However, they come with potential fees and risks that could jeopardize your credit score and overall financial health.

Saving up for a vacation is a smarter alternative that gives you more control over your finances, helps you stick to your budget, and reduces the risk of overspending. Accrue Savings helps make saving effortless and rewarding with its cash rewards program.

Jump-start your savings with Accrue to reach your goals faster without going into debt. Get started today !

As part of the Klarna family, a leading global payments and shopping service, trips.klarna.com boasts an array of benefits for travelers, including easy payment plans, affordable pricing, and a simple, user-friendly interface. But does it live up to the hype? Let’s take a closer look.

Klarna Trips website experience

One of the first things that users will notice about trips.klarna.com is its clean and modern design. The homepage features a beautiful background image of a tropical beach, which immediately sets the tone for a relaxing and stress-free vacation experience . The navigation bar is clearly labeled and easy to use, allowing users to browse through different travel categories , including flights, hotels , and vacation packages.

Once users select their desired category, they are presented with a list of search results that can be filtered by price, date, and other relevant factors. The website also offers helpful tips and information about each travel category, including packing tips, travel advice, and destination guides . Overall, the user experience on trips.klarna.com is pleasant and straightforward, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced travelers.

Klarna Trips pricing and Payment Plans

One of the main selling points of trips.klarna.com is its affordable pricing and flexible payment plans. The website partners with top travel providers to offer users the best possible prices on flights , hotels, and vacation packages . In addition, users can take advantage of Klarna’s “buy now, pay later” feature, which allows them to book their trip without having to pay the full amount upfront. Instead, users can choose to split the cost into four interest-free payments, giving them more time to pay and reducing the financial burden of travel. While this feature may be appealing to some users, it’s important to note that Klarna’s payment plans are not suitable for everyone. Users who struggle with managing their finances or have a history of overspending may want to avoid this option to avoid accruing unnecessary debt. Additionally, users should carefully review the terms and conditions of each payment plan to ensure they fully understand the costs and fees associated with their booking.

Klarna Trips Customer Service

Another important factor to consider when evaluating trips.klarna.com is its customer service. While the website offers a comprehensive FAQ section and helpful travel guides, users may encounter issues that require direct assistance from a customer service representative. In these cases, trips.klarna.com offers several options for getting in touch, including phone and email support. In addition, the website features a “Contact Us” page that includes a form for submitting questions or concerns. However, some users have reported difficulty reaching customer service representatives or receiving timely responses to their inquiries. This may be a cause for concern for users who value prompt and reliable customer service.

Is Klarna Trips safe and legit?

When booking travel online , security and privacy are critical considerations. Fortunately, trips.klarna.com takes these concerns seriously and employs robust security measures to protect users’ personal and financial information. The website uses SSL encryption to ensure that all data transmitted between the user’s device and the website’s servers is secure and private. Additionally, trips.klarna.com adheres to strict data protection policies and only collects and uses data in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. However, users should still exercise caution when entering personal or financial information on the website, especially when using public Wi-Fi or shared devices. It’s always a good idea to review the website’s privacy policy and terms of service before making a booking to ensure that you understand how your data will be collected, used, and shared.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

Read Next: Things To Do on Socotra

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Getting Around Moscow

The best way to get around Moscow is the metro. Faster and more efficient than the trolley buses and trams, this extensive system has stations that contain beautiful ornamentation, sculptures and mosaics. You could rent a car, but it's best to use public transportation to avoid the city's perpetually congested roads. Plus, street signs are all in Russian. In fact, English signs are nonexistent in the public transit system as well, so it's best to quickly get familiar with a map. Most travelers arrive through Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), but there are several other airports that serve the metro area. Several buses and a metro line shuttle airport travelers to and from downtown.

Savannah trolley companies working to improve noise and traffic downtown

S AVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – The trolley tours are a great way to learn about the Hostess City while seeing all of its beauty in a short period. They also contribute to the tourism industry.

But some residents and even visitors say they can be a distraction and interrupt the vibe of historic Savannah.

Tourism noise and traffic in Savannah were a topic of discussion at the April 11 City Council Workshop. At that meeting, the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) listed concerns relating to tourism:

  • Enforcement of Ordinances
  • Limits on Scheduled Tours
  • Require In-Ear Technology for Tours
  • Prohibit Amplified Speakers
  • Change Tour End Times
  • Transition to Electric Tour Vehicles
  • Enforcement of E-Scooter & E-Bike Rental Ban

Oriana Lehman-Wood visited Savannah for the first time. She was walking in Lafayette Square when she noticed something taking her attention away from the beauty of the historic city.

“I was standing on the corner, and I saw seven of these tourism buses, which I’m actually interested in hopping on, but the frequency was a bit distracting. It took away just a little bit of the sense of the history and feeling immersed into the local Savannah culture,” she said.

One of the three trolley tour businesses is Old Town Trolley. General Manager Garry Patrick says noise and traffic are something they have been working on, with input from the DNA.

“Tourism and living in Savannah are two things that have to go hand in hand. There has to be a balance,” he said. “But the important thing to remember is that the amount of vehicles that we keep off the road… if people are not on the trolley, they’re driving. That could be up to 20 extra  vehicles driving around squares trying to find parking spots.”

He says traffic is mainly heavy in the mornings, the time when Lehman-Wood was walking around the city.

Also in the squares were biking groups, Chatham Area Transit buses and walking tourists.

While the trolley companies are working on solutions for the noise and traffic, Patrick says he wants people to know that the tours are important for the Savannah economy and so many locals.

“It’s very, very important to put a face to tourism. I don’t want our company to be seen as just a trolley company, but it’s a trolley company that’s full of really great and vibrant people that actually work for us,” Patrick said.

The DNA recommended the City of Savannah consider a new ordinance to, “Eliminate impacts of amplified sound emanating from tour vehicles, either with proven directional speaker or in-ear technologies.”

The recommended compliance timeline would be 50 percent of the registered fleet compliant within 12 months, and all of the fleet compliant within 18 months.

The total cost per trolley would be $10,000 to $12,000 for four speakers, according to a presentation at the April 11 meeting.
