The 10 best things to do in León, Mexico

León is a beautiful Mexican city known for its production of leather goods, sold in the Zona Piel district. It is the most populous city in the state of Guanajuato. It has a wide variety of museums, beautiful churches, and parks, and a lot of things to do which makes it the perfect spot to spend a few days and learn about Mexican culture.

I put together a list of things to do in León for everybody that wants to get to know a different side of Mexico and not just Quintana Roo (nothing wrong with that, it´s beautiful).

Here are the best things to do in León and 10 reasons why you should put this gem on your Travel bucket list.

1. Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Expiatory Temple)

This is a Temple dedicated to the sacred heart of Jesus and the construction took over 91 years. Pope Benedict XVI officiated the closing ceremony in 2012 but it is said that the Temple is not even finished yet.

Finished or not, the building is stunning and makes a perfect picture backdrop with its neo-gothic style architecture.

The building is not just beautiful from the outside but has a lot of pretty glass windows, altars, and catacombs which makes it one of the best things to do in León.

Here are some curious facts about the Expiatory:

The glass windows show the birth of Christ, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and more. The floors are made of granite and got imported from Brazil and the main bell of the tower weighs more than two and a half tons.

2. Walk down Madero street

Calle Madero is one of the most famous streets in León. It starts at the Triumphal Arch of León and ends at the Martyrs Plaza and covers a little bit more than 1 kilometer.

Here you can find amazing cafés, bars, and restaurants as well as food stalls and shops. Stroll up and down the street, go shopping, or get a coffee or ice cream.

I especially loved shopping at a vintage clothing shop called Punto Medi .

The best café I´ve visited was Douxe Café where you can get great coffee, sandwiches, and pancakes. They also have tasty smoothies and great Wifi.

The other café was Etéreo which is a small café with only a handful of tables. Their Wifi is not the best but they do have a ton of outlets and amazing Matcha Latte and coffee.

3. Martyrs Plaza

This Plaza was formerly known as Plaza de la Constitución and was renamed after an unfortunate event during which many people lost their lives against the troops of Gen. Bonifacio Salinas because they were not happy with the elections.

Today the plaza is a peaceful garden and has beautifully carved trees, benches to relax, and lots of shops and restaurants around. It makes the perfect place to relax in the sun, read a book, people watch or grab something to eat or drink. It´s one of the best things to do in León.

4. Plaza de los Fundadores

This is the Plaza right next to Martyrs Plaza with a beautiful fountain in the middle called Fuente de Los Leones. It has four lion heads and each stands for 100 years and was added in 1976 when the city of León celebrated its 400th anniversary.

You can relax on one of the benches, people watch and soak up the atmosphere or visit the attractions in the lively area around the square.

It´s a great place to come with kids and at night the fountain lights up.

5. Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de La Madre Santísima de la Luz (Basilic Cathedral)

The Basilic cathedral also called León cathedral is a church of catholic worship located in the historic center right next to the Plaza de Los Fundadores. It has a baroque and neoclassical style and the interior is beautiful. There is also a statue of the Pope in front.

When you walk around the area definitely check out this beautiful church.

6. Take a picture of the Leon city signs

A lot of cities in Mexico have these city signs and they are great to take pictures of. One of the signs is located in front of the Templo Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Expiatory Temple) and the other one is located right next to the Arco Triunfal de la Calzada de Los Héroes.

Snap a picture of these cool city signs and once you start, it gets kind of addicting and you want to collect them all like stamps. So whenever you travel to a different city in Mexico, look out for the city signs.

7. Arco Triunfal de la Calzada de Los Héroes (Triumphal Arch)

This Arch is the representative emblem of the city of León.

The original cement lion is now located in the León Zoo and they added a new one in 1958. The 3 m long bronze lion cost 45.000 pesos ($2218 USD) and the Arch represents the entrance of the city.

There is a little park behind the Arch where kids run around and you can get ice cream. There was a market going on when we were there on Saturdays and they sold jewelry, candles, honey, toys, and much more.

8. San Juan de Dios Temple

It´s located in the neighborhood of the same name. It is a small church and not as impressive as the rest of the churches in León but it is the only one that has a Churrigueresque style. It has two towers and the bell of the smaller one shows hits of bullets received during the Mexican Revolution.

The park around the church is really pretty and has a small fountain. It is a great area to relax on the benches or grab something to eat because there are many restaurants around the square.

9. Visit Zona Piel

León is world-renowned for the production of leather goods, particularly footwear. In this area, there are many shops, restaurants, and hotels.

There is a shopping mall which has more than 4500 stores to shop for shoes, accessories, bags, and jackets. It is the largest open shopping center for footwear and leather goods in Latin America.

If you´re in the mood for shopping this is the place to go.

10. Visit one of the many Museums

León has a wide variety of museums you can visit. The Museum of Art and History has Mexican sculptures & regional culture exhibits. The Science Center has interactive exhibits and great activities for kids. And the Museum of the city is the first museum of León and has a variety of paintings.

León truly is a hidden gem and it seems that not many tourists know about this beautiful city yet. If you find yourself exploring Mexico definitely consider adding León to your bucket list.

A safe, affluent mid-large size city that is almost always overlooked by tourists.

Best known for their fine leather products. It’s also known for shoes – both leather and otherwise – and you’ll find entire malls in the city dedicated to them. It’s also one of the more progressive cities in Mexico; highly educated population, good infrastructure, and environmentally friendly. The city is the largest in the Bajío Region, ahead of Queretaro and Morelia . The city is a major university center and the population is dominated by university students. When you meet someone from Leon, just nod your nod and say ‘oh yeah, the university city’. They’ll look shocked and reply ‘how did you know?’.

POPULATION : 1,500,000 (but it doesn’t feel that big).

RENT AN APARTMENT IN LEON, MEXICO

$500. It doesn’t seem difficult to find a place to rent because there are a lot of university students here doing the same. I couldn’t get a handle on where the best place to live here is. You could do worse than around the center or around a university (Tec de Monterrey, Ibero and La Salle de Bajio all have campuses here).

BEST BARS & NIGHTLIFE IN LEON, MEXICO

This being somewhat of a university town, there are tons of places to go out here. Regrettably, I wasn’t able to find a cool, unique bar that would be good for meeting people. Most of the university students here seem to go to Prive or Barezzito, two places I hate.

My Latin Life recommends:

Barezzito : Probably the best known nightclub in Leon. Really social circle oriented so it’s quite hard to meet anyone.

La Martina León : Trendy nightclub spot along a main street. Good prices, good service, DJ, and dancing.

The Normal : Asia-themed nightclub with tables and standing areas. Pretty cool spot.

Red Mosquito Live : Well known spot for live music and stand-up tables. Theres a big bar selection and some simple food options as well. This place is more of a live music venue than a nightclub, but definitely a good time. If you like rock music in Spanish, this is 1000% your spot.

BEST CAFES IN LEON FOR DIGITAL NOMADS

The coffee shops in Leon are full of university students and young professional.

Ameno Cafe : Great cafe with wifi in the Jardines del Moral neighborhood.

Broga Bar & Coffee : Popular cafe in the Panorama neighborhood, not too far from Ameno.

Leon is one of the safest big cities in Mexico, if not the safest. The city has mostly been spared the drug violence that plagues some parts of Mexico. Petty crime is rare, likely due to the city being relatively affluent. You should be fine here at all hours unless you’re doing something stupid like trying to buy drugs on the street.

There are direct flights from Mexico City . Leon is also a quick bus ride to Guadalajara .

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT LEON, MEXICO

The best time of year to visit Leon is during the university school season. The city is much more alive and there are more events. The university schedule generally takes a break during the summer (May to September). I would avoid Leon in the summer both for the heat, the lack of  beach, and the lack of university students. The best season to visit Leon is the spring or fall.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN LEON

It’s a really good place for teaching English. Pay isn’t horrible and there is demand. I met an English here working for a university with no more experience than a degree and a TEFL.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON LEON, MEXICO

Leon could be a great city. Great energy from the university students, safe, good infrastructure. Problem is, is that it is truly unremarkable from an aesthetic standpoint. Given all the amazing cities that there are in Mexico, I wouldn’t make Leon a priority. The center is OK, but other than that the city is pretty ugly. Not quite as Americanized as Monterrey , but it’s on that track. That being said, if you are looking for somewhere to get some work done, enjoy nice weather and enjoy an authentic Mexican city, you could do much worse than Leon. Digital nomads will appreciate the various cafes dotting the city as well. That being said, you should expect to get bored fast with nothing else to do.

American Airlines continues to price it can provide the least comfortable passenger experience in the air. This legacy carrier rivals the budgets for both terrible seats and inadequate amenities. I am a 5’7” woman who is not wider than a coach seat (even on these narrow bodied aircraft). My 3.5 hour flight was terribly uncomfortable because the leg room is inadequate (my knees hit the seat on front of me even when it was not reclined); the seat barely reclines; and the foam padding is worn thin to the extent one can feel the metal supports of the seat. Add to this the fact that the aisle is super narrow, so that the drink cart literally scrapes the arm rest of the aisle seat. It’s basically torture.

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Flight from SBP to DFW 1. They rerouted us through PHX 2. Delayed flight out of SBP for 3 hrs so we missed our connection Downgrade on rerouted flight. Back of the plane, center seats, didn't sit together 4. Return flight out of DFW same exact thing. Delayed, missed connection, Downgrade + they lost our luggage! A complete mess.

It is ridiculous that electronic checkin for under age kids can be done and need to be done over the counter. Having said so, we were requested to do the single line for this as if we never did any checkin or made services for this to happen fast. Just ridiculous. Flight delayed as it is the regular business for this airline.

They cancel the fly and don’t give a money refund.

The WiFi tv wasn’t working. The flight was over sold and moved several times. The gate assignment appeared on the screens right as we were supposed to board. Because of the flight being over sold we were almost stuck in Cancun for a couple of a days. The flight attendants were unfriendly and would wake you up to pick up other people’s trash.

The reason we chose Volaris to fly from LAX to Mazatlan, Mexico was because of the DATES and TIMES for the NON-STOP flights. When those flights got Totally Changed that was UNACCEPTABLE ! ! ! Also, when my husband Died unexpectedly, the Only statement that Customer Service kept repeating was "they would only offer Credit on a future flight". REALLY?! Volaris was only going to offer CREDIT on another flight to a DEAD PERSON ! ! !

It was unfortunate that I paid more than $120 one way to carry on my luggage to only have to have them checked baggage. We board the flight and there’s a lot of overhead space. They checked our bags in Group 2 but Group 3 was able to board with their luggage. I would not fly Volaris again. The flight attendance on the plane was very nice but the employees at the gate prior to boarding was very rude.

For the price, you pretty much can't beat this airlines. As far as comfort, you could do a lot better, but it'll cost you. Over all cheapest way to get from point A to point B.

I am disabled and was unable to get any assistance from Volaris. I had to wait in line at front desk for 45 minutes, I am by myself, and unable to stand. When I got to front desk check in, they had no assistance for me. I did however, have wheelchair assistance when I arrived in Mexico City. Thank God for that!

But it wouldn’t be true to say that Leon, Mexico, is 100% safe. As we’ll see, the town has some pretty striking violent crime and murder stats. It’s not been untouched in the well-publicized cartel wars that have ravaged Mexico in the past few decades. Plus, travelers here probably won’t feel quite as safe as they do in the more touristy parts of the country, such as the Cancun beaches or the historic core of Mexico City.

Serious and violent crime in Leon

The biggest worry about making a trip to Leon, and to Mexico more generally, is surely the risk of getting caught up in violent crime. Sadly, this corner of North America is no stranger to that, since it’s been a major hotspot for drug trafficking since the days Pablo Escobar ruled the roost down in Colombia.

The thing is, many cities in Mexico manage to almost completely dodge the bad rep that comes with the drug cartels. Leon is not one of them. Just look at the stats. The city now has the third highest murder rate in the country overall. It’s beaten only by the infamous border crossing towns of Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, which both have homicide rates of over 1,000 in every 100,000 head of population.

It’s not quite that bad in Leon, but you’re still looking at a murder rate of 816 people per 100k – that’s eight times what it is in Chicago for some striking perspective. Behind it is a surge in cartel-related violence tied to an ongoing conflict between two of the most powerful gangs in western Mexico: The Santa Rosa de Lima and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

The good news is that cartel violence rarely spills over into the major tourist areas in cities like this, so sticking to the historic heart of town and the main sites can really reduce your risk of getting mixed up in it. However, things do occasionally get pretty bad, and the US State Department has even issued travel warnings for Guanajuato state in recent times. You’ll need to check those aren’t in place before you travel.

Is Leon, Mexico, safe for solo female travelers?

The same considerations of safety in Leon will apply here no matter if you’re traveling as a solo female or a large group. You’ll still need to check if there are any current FCO or State Department travel warnings in place, and ensure that you don’t stay in parts of the city that are known for their violent crime and cartel related violence.

The good news is that Mexico isn’t specifically known for crimes against women, so there’s likely to be only a minimal heightened risk here if you’re traveling as a lone female. Still, adopt all the precautions you would elsewhere: Try not to walk around alone at night, stay out of sketchy areas, be careful accepting drinks from strangers, and always let someone trusted know where you’re headed.

Is the water safe to drink in Leon, Mexico?

Sadly, the water in Leon isn’t safe to drink. In fact, the general rule is that you shouldn’t drink the tap water anywhere in Mexico. Even the locals don’t do it. Poor plumbing and infrastructure means that water from the tap often isn’t treated properly for human consumption. In other places, it’s sourced from unclean reservoirs on the roofs of buildings.

The good news is that bottled water is cheap in these parts. A small bottle (250ml) will set you back around 70 cents, while a bigger bottle of 1.5L is just over $1. H2O is sold at pretty much all grocery stores and is also widely available in hotel bars and lobbies.

• La Piscina – A industrial area with some slums that sits on the south side of the town.
