You can't begin to appreciate everything Rwanda has become until you understand the reasons behind the devastating Rwandan genocide–a conflict that killed some 800,000 people, most of whom were members of the Tutsi ethnic minority, in just 100 days. The Kigali Genocide Memorial sheds light on the historical events that led to the genocide and horrifying realities Rwandans faced in 1994.

Prepare yourself: A visit to the memorial (where 250,000 victims are interred) is emotionally demanding but gives tourists a foundation with which to comprehend this complex country. You'll start by watching a short documentary film about the Rwandan genocide before making your way through three permanent exhibitions, filled with artifacts, timelines, historical information, and photographs.

The main exhibit focuses on the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and moderate Hutus. It explains how colonization affected Rwandan society and created divisions that previously didn't exist between Hutus and Tutsis. Then, through displays of powerful photographs, artifacts, and audio-visual displays on dark, circular halls, the exhibit unveils the events that sparked the genocide, what happened during those 100 brutal days, heart-wrenching stories of survival, and feats of rescue from locals and outsiders alike. Sculptures and stained-glass windows pepper the moving space, making it feel sacred.

You'll eventually make your way through the Children's Room , which displays a gallery of life-size portraits of the youngest victims of the genocide, some of whom were infants. It keeps the memory of the children alive through details about their favorite toys, sports, foods, songs, and more. The museum concludes with an exhibit on other genocides and massacres around the world , putting the Rwandan genocide into context and examining potential strategies for prevention and intervention.

After your visit, head outside to pay your respects to the victims in the Gardens of Reflection. The park-like setting offers the right atmosphere for quiet contemplation on everything you just saw.

Founded by a pair of brothers (both self-taught painters) on a mission to "tap the untapped potential of art in Rwanda," the Inema Arts Center has become the place to visit to see contemporary art in Kigali since its founding in 2012. The building's exteriors are decked out in colorful murals that make it impossible to miss.

Inema Arts Center devotes its interiors to gallery space for 10 artists in residence . Tourists may see modern takes on traditional African crafts, abstract and expressive portraits, mixed-media works depicting scenes of African life, and some of the best artwork in Rwanda, depending on which mix of artists are on display during their visit.

The invitation to come admire the work comes with no obligation to make a purchase, but should you wish to take something home, the center can help arrange shipping.

The Inema Arts Center isn't the only place to experience art in Kigali. Tourists can also check out the Rwanda Art Museum, an institution housed in the former Presidential Palace on the outskirts of Kigali. It's one of the country's eight national museums.

Opened in May 2018, the Rwanda Art Museum is the only contemporary art museum in Rwanda. It showcases the breadth of local creativity, as well as works from international artists. The sprawling space displays more than 100 works of art, including ceramics, sculptures, paintings, and experimental pieces made in a variety of mediums.

Interestingly, the grounds of the museum also contain the debris from the presidential jet that crashed on April 6, 1994. Pieces from the Falcon 50 aircraft jolt up from the grass like pinnacles.

Kimironko Market, Kigali's largest and busiest market, makes for an incredible afternoon of sightseeing. Hundreds of vendors have set up shop in the massive warehouse complex, hustling everything from bed sheets and carved masks to a cornucopia of produce sourced from all over East Africa. You'll walk single file through tight pathways, ducking beneath hanging t-shirts and negotiating space with women carrying large baskets on their heads.

If there's one thing you must take home from this market, it's bespoke clothing. Shopkeepers here will help you choose vibrant, patterned fabrics from thousands of options on offer. Then, you'll select from different styles of garments–anything from tank tops and wide-legged pants to leggings and dresses–before getting measured and handing the order off to one of the on-site tailors.

In about an hour, you'll have custom, made-to-measure clothes to wear on the rest of your adventures around Kigali (and a one-of-a-kind souvenir to take home!). Make sure you try them on before leaving the market, just in case you need adjustments

It's natural to want to capture this exciting slice of Kigali life in photos. However, many shopkeepers here are camera shy and prefer not to be photographed. Use discretion when taking snapshots, and always ask permission before photographing people.

If you want to shop for truly heartwarming souvenirs, swing by the Nyamirambo Women's Center. The women-founded organization was launched in late 2007 in an effort to address gender inequality and empower women.

In addition to offering free education and vocational training, it employs women at fair wages to fill its intimate boutique with ethically-made goods . Tourists can pick up beautifully printed tote bags, hand-woven baskets in every shape and size, patterned place mats, crocheted rugs, beaded jewelry, and local-inspired fashions.

If some of the best shopping in the area isn't enough of a draw, here's another reason why visiting the Nyamiramo Women's Center is one of the best things to do in Kigali: its community immersions. The group offers fascinating walks through Nyamirambo with guides who were either born in the neighborhood or live here now, taking travelers through local hair salons, mosques, tailors, and agricultural businesses.

The center also invites tourists to participate in traditional cooking classes and basket-weaving workshops. The experiences will give you an insider's view of Rwandan culture.

Amahoro Stadium is the best place to see sports and entertainment in Rwanda. Sitting in the stands with up to 25,000 excited spectators watching Rayon Sports Football Club and Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club take on opponents is an unforgettable experience, thrusting tourists into the heart of Rwanda's fervor for soccer.

The stadium also hosts rugby matches, live performances, marathons, and other events. Check the events listings in the local newspapers, or ask your hotel concierge about what's coming up during your stay.

Amahoro, which means "peace," is more than a sports center, though–it's a historical site. Around 12,000 people sought refuge at the stadium for weeks during the Rwandan genocide, trying to survive with little more than the clothes on their back under the open sky. The stadium pays homage to this important piece of history with events of remembrance around the anniversary of the genocide.

In March 2022, a 24-month renovation project kicked off at the stadium. It will eventually bring the attraction's capacity to a whopping 45,000 people, so expect even bigger crowds in the future.

Coffee is a critical part of the Rwandan economy, bringing tens of millions of dollars into the country each year. But despite growing some of the finest beans in the world, Rwanda doesn't have much of a local coffee culture. It exports nearly all of its coffee.

Question Coffee is working to change that. It works directly with farmers to source the country's best beans, improve the growing and roasting techniques and supporting local growers.

Tourists can get a taste of this made-in-Rwanda product (and even take some beans home) at Question Coffee Cafe in Gishushu . Baristas serve a variety of speciality espresso beverages, pour-over coffee, and caffeinated drinks infused with unexpected ingredients, like tree tomato.

One of the most famous sites in Kigali–and perhaps even in all of Rwanda–is Hôtel des Mille Collines . Located in the Central Business District , the hotel sheltered hundreds of people during the Rwandan genocide. They hid in groups of up to 10 in unnumbered rooms and relied on the pool for drinking water. Tourists may already be familiar with the story from the 2004 fictional film, Hotel Rwanda .

The still-functioning luxury hotel is now one of the best places to stay in Kigali. But even if you choose to book a room elsewhere, you can still experience a piece of this unique place at the hotel's weekly Culture Night , held every Friday. It celebrates Rwandan culture with live music and dance performances , as well as meals made with nearly all local ingredients .

Hot tip: Want to see an incredible view of Kigali? Head to the appropriately named Le Panorama Restaurant , on the fourth floor of Hôtel des Mille Collines, and prepare to have your breath taken away.

Just steps away from the Kigali Serena Hotel and the Kigali Marriott Hotel , the Camp Kigali Memorial is a quiet, sacred space where 10 Belgian soldiers became some of the earliest victims of the Rwandan genocide. They had been sent by General Dallaire to guard the residence of moderate Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana. Presidential Guard soldiers captured the Belgians, seized their weapons, and brought them to this spot in Kigali, where they were murdered.

Now, the Camp Kigali Memorial pays tribute to each of these victims with 10 solemn stone pillars, jutting up in a circle from a platform of pebbles. Look closely at the horizontal cuts carved into each column–they represent the age of each soldier. The tops of the pillars are broken, symbolizing the soldiers' brutal end. At the base of each stone, you'll see the initials of each soldier.

Just outside the memorial is a small museum , riddled with bullet holes from this important day.

More than just a dark tourism site , the Camp Kigali Memorial is a sobering space to understand the horrors of what Rwandans went through in 1994. It gives visitors a more intimate understanding of the genocide and a greater appreciation for the eventual unification of all Rwandans.

After visiting the Rwanda Art Museum , tourists can see even more works from local creators at Niyo Arts Gallery. It offers creative space for 17 artists in residence, who have expertise in everything from oil painting and graffiti art to Rwandan drumming and dancing . Tourists can see vibrant works displayed in rooms throughout the gallery, catch occasional performances, and enjoy meet and greets with the artists.

More than just an art center, Niyo is also an organization on a mission to fight global poverty. It donates a portion of its proceeds to local orphanages.

No matter where you are in the city, you can probably see its main natural attraction: Mount Kigali. Tourists can hike this gentle slope in an hour or two from near the Nyamirambo Stadium (follow the signs for Fazenda Sengha ) and catch incredible views of the city from a variety of vantage points. The short hike will also take you through a lovely eucalyptus forest, coffee plantation, and a series of rustic neighborhoods.

Rwanda’s charming and stunning capital, Kigali has a fascinating and disturbing history that has given way to the incredibly peaceful and forward-thinking city of today.

Traveling two hours east of the city, you’ll reach Akagera National Park , Rwanda’s premier safari destination. The park itself is extremely beautiful and was started as a conservation project initially, rather than for tourism. It hasn’t been an easy ride for Akagera, with the human-wildlife conflict wiping out several animal species over time through poaching and land being needed for agricultural use. However, today, through the efforts of the conservation teams, the park has been repopulated and now you can see many different animals including leopards, lions, and elephants.

Natural Wonder

Three hours away from Kigali is Mount Bisoke , also known as Mount Visoke, in the Virunga Mountains. The mountain stands at a respectable 3,711 meters high and is a steep and challenging trek, but the main attraction is the stunning crater lake at the top, which is the largest in the region. You begin the climb at 8 a.m., so be prepared for an early start.

National Park

A couple hours away, to the northwest of Kigali, you will find the stunning Volcanoes National Park , home to the incredibly beautiful and endangered mountain gorilla. For 1,500 dollars per person, visitors can spend the day trekking through the jungle and spend up to one hour observing these very humanlike creatures in their natural habit—a magical, once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed if you can afford the luxury.

Cultural Site

If you have the time and want to get a good insight into the Kigali scene, take in the arts or get involved in one of the many activities offered at the Inema Arts Center . There are various artworks on display from some of Rwanda’s brightest talents and you can see the artists at work in the studio. Here you can purchase locally made items from local artisans, attend one of their events, or even learn a new skill, such as drumming or dancing.

Best Day Trip

Rwanda is a small country, so if you’re looking for a different scene, head to Lake Kivu , a three-hour drive away near the border of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are several activities available at the lake including boat tours of the islands or cycling along the shores on the Congo Nile Trail, where you’ll get a true taste of local Rwandan life.

Off the Beaten Path

For a new adventure, why not climb Mount Kigali . Starting in the Nyamirambo neighbourhood, it’s a relatively gentle incline and you’ll get fantastic views of the city below. At the top, you’ll find a pretty wooded area and you can stop for a celebratory beer and some food at a bar called Mera Neza.

Most Iconic Place

Visible from all over, the brightly lit and colourful Kigali Convention Centre is one of the most iconic attractions in the city. The venue is shaped like a giant beehive and was inspired after the architect visited the King’s Palace in Nyanza, which also had a similar shape. It’s adjoined to the Radisson Blu Hotel of which the design was based on Rwanda’s traditional basket-weaving techniques.

Kigali is a very up-and-coming city with a good choice of bars and restaurants. For a good night out, perhaps start your evening with sunset drinks (known locally as a sundowner) at Choma’D , a hip and trendy bar with pretty views, or Pili Pili Boutique Hotel , before heading to Nyamirambo for what’s likely to be a very interesting evening. Another popular spot with the expat crowd is the Kimihurura neighborhood, which is home to some of Kigali’s best nightspots.

Historic Site

Today, Kigali epitomises the modern, progressive African city, however, just a few decades ago it was home to one of the most brutal genocides in the history of mankind. The Kigali Genocide Memorial was built to remember the victims and to educate people on the atrocities to ensure that this never happens again. It’s an insightful but upsetting experience, so be prepared.

Neighborhood to Explore

A great place to explore is the buzzing and vibrant neighborhood of Nyamirambo , a multicultural and extremely interesting part of the city. Nyamirambo is the heart of Kigali, with cool shops, markets, bars, and restaurants. It’s a primarily Muslim neighborhood, so don’t come here looking for akabenz , but you will find tasty brochettes and fish offered. There are a few tours through the area if you don’t fancy exploring by yourself.

If you want to learn about a city’s past then a museum, palace, or historical site will be best. But if you want to take in today’s Kigali then walking is the way to do it. When it comes to walking as a means for exploration there are few wrong ways: the tourist routes will yield the most dramatic discoveries.

Rwanda Museums.

Rwanda is known for a number of museums that has made Kigali to be one of the most touristic attraction city. The museums are due to the genocide incidence of the 1994, where a number of Rwandans were killed during this time. Some were churches and others residential buildings that were turned to museums later. Some of the museums includes, Kigali genocide memorial ground , Presidential Palace Museum , Campaign against genocide Museum , Kant House Museum , Nyamatta and Ntarama . These have become vibrant touristic attractions as many tourists come to experience and learn about the Rwandan genocide history and the current development.

Visit Kigali Genocide Memorial Ground.

This is an amazing place, where bodies of the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide were laid to rest, as a sign to a decent burial. It’s just a short distance away from the city. This place has rich history of the genocide, and will be so educational, worth a visit.

Visit Kimironko Market.

Located in Remera, this market has all sorts of fabrics you’re looking for, ranging from house hold, souvenirs to food staffs, including fruits. You will have a chance to interact with the locals as you go about the buying process. This place is wonderful to visit, been if you’re not interested to buy anything, but you will love the walk, and how the locals interact with the customers. Rwandans are, by nature, more reserved than Kenyans, or other Africans. Loud music isn’t tolerated after 8pm and bars tend to close early. Some may call it boring, but Kigali’s residents embrace the city’s quiet calm. Yet, the oldest part of Kigali defies this stereotype.

Nyamirambo is a vibrant neighborhood in the south west part of Kigali. It’s been called, Kigali’s “coolest neighborhood” and the “heart of Kigali” also referred to as Old Kigali, as it is the major center where the entire city began from in way back.  Nyamirambo is the life of Kigali city. People party night and day. Of course that comes with a lot of mischief. Grocery shops are open all night, boutiques show no signs of closing and people work in shifts, basically – Nyamirambo is usually awake 24 hours.

Nyamirambo walking tour in Kigali is one of the best ways to understand the cultural life of the city and how local people really interact and do business. This walking tour will give you the how people of the people and their living. This is the most livelihood part of the Kigali City with the most number of people but a bit down town part of the city. The Nyamirambo became one of the most colorful and vibrant places within that historic area. Visit Milk Bars.

Milk bars are where Rwandans get their equivalent of a morning latte. Nyamirambo is home to more than fifty of the small shops filled with little more than a vat of fresh cow milk. Glasses of hot, steamed fresh milk are served straight up, with cocoa powder, honey or tea.

Recently, the government has promoted milk bars in a push to nourish more of the population, particularly those on a low income, encouraging a healthy start to the day. For many Rwandans, a fresh glass of milk and a banana is breakfast.

Eat like a local

Rounding off the NWC tour is a cooking lesson at a local woman’s home. After exploring the daily fresh produce market, where you can see women grinding cassava root with giant pestle and mortars, you’ll be taught to cook some traditional Rwandan cuisine . Irish potatoes – named because the original crop came from Europe – sugar cane, and a stew of green beans, tomatoes, and onions, make up lunch at the end of the morning.

Night life in Kigali.

Lots of bars do exist within Kigali, you can decide to go for night life for disco, or go for a happening, where you can have a chance to attend to a live band show, to color out your day.

In April 1994, members of the Hutu majority government of Rwanda initiated a genocide against the Tutsi people after decades of conflict between the two ethnic groups. By mid-July of the same year, approximately one million people had been slaughtered. 259,000 of them are buried in mass graves at the Kigali Genocide Memorial , home to three permanent exhibitions, the largest of which is dedicated to commemorating the events and victims of the Rwandan Genocide. Bear Witness to the Tragedies at Nyamata Church

For a more visceral education about the events of the Rwandan Genocide, travel about an hour's drive south of the city to the Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial . Here, approximately 10,000 Tutsi sought refuge within the church compound but were massacred when Hutu extremists used grenades to blast open the church’s locked doors. Today, the remains of more than 50,000 victims are buried at Nyamata. 

The church itself still bears the original bullet holes in the ceiling and walls, while the bloodstained clothing of the victims (as well as their personal items and some of their bones) are displayed inside as a heartbreaking reminder of why the events of 1994 can never be allowed to happen again.

Once the grandest hotel in the capital,  Hôtel des Mille Collines was immortalized by the 2004 movie Hotel Rwanda , which followed the story of Hutu manager Paul Rusesabagina, who sheltered hundreds of Tutsi refugees here during the Rwandan Genocide. Although Rusesabagina’s role is now the subject of controversy , the hotel itself is a fascinating piece of Rwandan history. Its pre-1994 glory has faded over time, yet it remains a glamorous place to come for afternoon drinks at the poolside bar or to enjoy fine local and international cuisine at the fourth-floor restaurant. While sipping your cocktail amid the garden greenery, consider that the pool was once the only source of water for the refugees trapped inside the hotel. 

Fine-tune Your Haggling Skills at Kimironko Market

For a truly immersive shopping experience, head to the vast warehouse complex known as  Kimironko Market , the busiest and most popular market in town, with vendors selling wares from all over Rwanda as well as East, Central, and West Africa. Here, you’ll find souvenirs and crafts for rock-bottom prices as well as swathes of  kitenge  fabric that can be transformed into unique clothing by the market’s on-site seamstresses.

Kimironko is also a marketplace for local Rwandans, with different sections selling colorful fruits and vegetables, clothing, home supplies, and pungent meat and seafood. It’s chaotic, loud, and often overwhelming, but the kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and smells serve as an authentic insight into everyday life in Kigali. Note that all prices here are considered to be negotiable.

Take a Cultural Tour at the Nyamirambo Women's Center

Located in Kigali’s multicultural Nyamirambo district, the Nyamirambo Women’s Center is a non-profit initiative intended to provide Rwandan women with the education and training needed to find employment. The ladies who work here use their skills to create high-quality children’s clothing, accessories, and home decor products out of traditional kitenge fabrics, all of which make stunning souvenirs while funding the center’s community programs.

Make sure to sign up for one of their popular walking tours, too. After a traditional snack and a lesson in Kinyarwanda, you’ll follow a local guide on a tour of Nyamirambo’s houses, independent businesses, and mosques, and afterward, enjoy a traditional lunch at one of the ladies’ homes. Sisal basket weaving workshops and traditional cooking classes can also be booked online .

Shop for Rwandan Art at the Inema Art Center

Founded in 2012 by two brothers with a passion for supporting and showcasing emerging Rwandan artists, the Inema Art Center is now one of the best contemporary galleries in the city, featuring the work of emerging and established artists from around the world and serving as a studio for 10 artists-in-residence, who typically work across a broad spectrum of different mediums.

The Inema Art Center hosts workshops and training programs for the next generation of Rwandan creatives, including weekly classes for orphans with artistic abilities, traditional dance programs for children, and a crafts program for women. Visitors can peruse their artwork in the gallery or shop for jewelry, linens, and leatherwork created by the center’s students at the gift shop. Keep an eye out for regular music and dance performances, too.

The café is an ideal spot for a leisurely brunch or evening drinks with a view. On Fridays, don't miss the café's weekly cocktail and tasting board event.

Known among visitors and locals alike as the place to unwind after a busy day, Repub Lounge has a loyal following in Kigali. Its African interiors use kitenge fabrics and hand-crafted furniture to create a convivial atmosphere, while the outside deck impresses with mesmerizing views of the city lights. 31 Fun Things to Do in Kigali

Ok, ok. I know. Kigali isn’t exactly a mecca of activity. It’s not a city with obvious tourist attractions and finding things to keep you occupied can be tricky. But, while Kigali’s wonders aren’t all that obvious, they’re there! You just have to look a little harder to find them.

Rejoice! That’s where I come in, my friends. Here’s a little list of some things that new arrivals, tourists, or even folks who’ve lived here for years might want to check out. To break up the list a little, I’ve divided things into categories: Boozy & Tasty, Cultural & Touristy, Sporty & Outdoorsy, and everything else. There are plenty of ideas so have a read and then head out and do some stuff!

Anyway… here’s my list, in no rational order…

Attend One of Kigali’s Annual Events

There’s not a whole lot that happens each year in Kigali but things are improving slowly. Check out this list of annual events in Kigali to see if your time here matches up with one of the city’s yearly activities. Everything from marathons to music festivals to food fairs to rally car racing.

Take a Walking Tour of Nyamirambo

Nyamirambo is my favourite part of Kigali. It’s filled with character and the streets are almost always bustling with people – unlike the rest of the city’s sleepy streets. It’s where many of Kigali’s Muslims live and worship and somehow also houses loads of lively bars that seem to be open and busy any time or day. It’s awesome. But it’s also a little intimidating for the new visitor… which is where the Nyamirambo Women’s Center comes in. This group of ladies have created a walking tour around their neighbourhood visiting a hair salon, tailor, and a local house to help make lunch. It’s got to be Kigali’s first walking tour which makes for a fun morning. Plus the money goes towards supporting the women’s center which is an amazing cause. Win win!

Visit an Art Studio

The art scene in Kigali is small but growing. Each month sees new art shows and developments and the main reasons for this are the art studios which keep popping up. Ivuka and Uburanga are two of the more established galleries but Inema is a recent addition that has done a lot of great work both on the canvas and off – hosting lots of great events. Yego Arts is another of the newer galleries located in Nyarutarama near the MTN Centre. Spend an hour or two looking through their galleries, watching the artists and work, or just hanging out in their cool, friendly, spaces.

Go to the Library

Kigali recently opened a fancy new library . Not only is it in a snazzy building with a beautiful view (have I mentioned yet that Kigali is beautiful?) but it’s also a great idea and the first library in the country. The last time I was there, the organisation of the books needed a bit of work but there’s something charming about finding cookbooks mixed in with bibles and biographies. RaN Cafe is up top (shaded in a mysterious blue hue due to the plexiglass roof) that has decent food and a good view. Get a membership and take out books or just hang out, use their free wifi, or enjoy reading in what is a really nice space.

Watch Live Music

Live music is a bit of a problem in Kigali. As in, there really isn’t much of it. White Horse used to do reggae concerts every Friday but I’m not sure if that’s still happening. Tiamo in Kiyovu has a Congolese band that plays every Friday as well. It’s good music and a lively atmosphere. Serena Hotel will occasionally host bigger concerts (usually at a relatively high price) and Goethe-Institut often holds more cultural type music events like mandolin players and opera singers, usually for free. The Kigali Up! festival is held each July and is a fun, two-day event. Your best bet for keeping on top of music in Kigali is to subscribe to the Goethe-Institut’s newsletter or to check in regularly to my Kigali events calendar.

Go to a Movie

Century Cinema is Kigali’s only movie theatre and it’s the real deal, folks, complete with popcorn and movies on one of their big screens. The cinema is equipped with 3D and even have something called the ‘5D Experience’ which I have yet to try out. They get the latest movies (and sometimes even get them before their release in the US) and it’s a fun night out. If you’re more into smaller, independent, international films then head to the Goethe-Institut on Tuesday nights for German (or German-themed) films, or the Korean Embassy for Korean movies. The Kwetu Film Insistute and Heaven Restaurant also play the occasional movie and if you’re in Kigali in July, make sure to check out Hillywood. There’s also a movie theatre in Nyamirambo that will let you play your own movies if you can get a small group of people together.

Go to the Casino

Kigali’s only casino is small, tucked away on the fourth floor of the Top Tower Hotel, and is weirdly packed at all hours with Chinese men. It’s no place for someone familiar with the casinos of Monte-Carlo or Las Vegas. No high rollers or showgirls here – just Chinese men gambling quietly as the waitresses bring around trays of complimentary cold samosas. But as someone who doesn’t really like gambling all that much and often feels intimidated by card tables, I like it here! It’s relaxed, welcoming, and, as it’s open until 2am, it makes a fun stop after dinner.

Go Souvenir Shopping

Kigali isn’t exactly a shopping mecca but if you’re here as a visitor, you’ll probably want to pick up some souvenirs. Cooperatives are a good place to grab baskets, poo paintings, carvings and all things Rwandan-ish all at once. There’s one located near Simba Supermarket in town called ‘COOTRAC’ which is small but it has all of the usual stuff. People here tend to give good prices from teh start but there’s room for a bit of negotiation. The main souvenir place is called ‘Caplaki’ and is located between Cercle Sportif and the nearby roundabout. It’s large but every stall seems to sell the exact same things and, as this place sees a lot of tourists, they start their prices crazy high so make sure to bargain hard.  Kimironko market also sells touristy things for cheap but you’ll have a far more hectic experience. If you’re into markets, though, this is the place to go. If you’re looking for something really nice items that are a bit more upscale and unique and crafted by talented local artisans then check out the Azizi Life Boutique located at Heaven Restaurant.

Take a Sunset Moto Ride

It’s probably smart to avoid motos as much as possible… but I’ve never claimed to be smart. Some of my most peaceful moments in Kigali come on the back of a moto just before the sun sets at around 5:30pm to 6pm. The light in the city is amazing and I love putting some earphones in and taking in the views from the back of a moto.

Have a Spa Day

Spa stuff like massages, manicures, pedicures and facials cost a lot less here than they would at home so take advantage and spend a day pampering yourself. I suppose The Serena is considered the best hotel in Kigali and it has a spa to match. If you’re feeling fancy and are in need of a day of pampering you can pay somewhere around $30 to use their jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and pool for the day. Make sure you drink a lot of the ‘free’ juice to maximize value. If you want to continue the luxury and really want to splash out, consider a spa treatment or massage. If you’re looking for a more affordable but still very professional spa treatment, check out Sunset Spa in Kibagabaga which do all kinds of massage, manicures, pedicures, facials and all that good stuff which Enya plays softly in the background.

Go for a Sauna

Saunas seem to be a pretty popular outing here in Kigali, not just reserved for clients at the fancy hotels. If you’re looking for a seriously sweaty cultural experience, head into Nyamirambo for a sauna there. Only for the brave! Food and drink! Just a few ideas on what tasty treats Kigali has on offer.

Drink Coffee (and Tea!)

Rwanda is well known as having fantastic locally grown coffee and tea and, although most of the best stuff is exported, I’m still pretty happy with the offerings around town. The cafes in Kigali serve up all kinds of coffees – from basic to fancy to iced – usually in a nice, relaxing setting that makes it easy to while away the time with a few cups coffee and a good book. Or head to one of the supermarkets (Nakumatt has a good selection) to get some coffee or tea to brew at home.

Go for Brochettes

Meat on a stick… you can’t really go wrong and Rwanda does it well.  I’d recommend getting a bit adventurous and wandering into any ol’ local place in your neighbourhood. Just look for any bar with ‘Primus’ or ‘Mutzig’ painted on the walls and they should serve brochettes (probably only goat or beef but fish and chicken can sometimes be found) with bananas, chips or potatoes. Ordering might be an adventure, your beer will be warm and your bill will be wrong, but your food will probably be cheap and really tasty (but be prepared to wait an hour or more as service is rarely fast). I’d guess that most people in Kigali have that one, super secret place that does the best brochettes ever… so get out there and find yours! Or if you want meat on a stick prepared in a more fancy way in a more formal setting then try Republika for an added bonus of large half carafes of wine, good music, and a nice atmosphere.

Go to a Milk Bar

Warm milk? Ew. EW. But, while you’ll never find me sampling the wares at a local milk bar, I know some people who love the stuff! So there must be something to it. At the very least, wander into one of Kigali’s many milk bars and have a little taste. You might hate it… but you might love it! Kacyiru near the US Embassy seems to be the milk bar part of town… just look for paintings of cows.

Eat Akabenz

Aka benz ! It’s pork by the kilo! But I have no idea why they call it aka benz. But that doesn’t matter much anyway… what matters is that it’s a big ol’ plate of pork and it’s tasty. Although I’ve really only had it a couple of times. Come Again Bar in Remera seems to be the go-to place in Kigali for aka benz. I’ve also had it in the bar behind Micha’s who go one step further by offering some scantly-clad lip-synching dancers as entertainment. Pork with a side of booty. Weird.

Eat Nyama Choma

I think in Kenya ‘nyama choma’ means ‘roasted meat’ but, in Rwanda, it almost always refers to roasted goat. Nyama choma isn’t found in every little local bar the way brochettes are, you need to know where to look. Car Wash is a popular place for it but my favourite is Sundowner . They serve it up with kachambari (salsa) and an amazing sauce. Add some cheap whiskey and some classic 90’s tunes into the mix and you’re in for a fun, carnivorous, and delicious night.

Eat a Giant Fish

There are some really great local places in Nyamirambo that will serve you a giant fish that you then proceed to rip apart with your bare hands with two friends. It’s a giant fish, it’s tasty, it’s fun, it’s cheap! I’d recommend checking out my old favourite Green Corner or, if you want a better view, head further up the hill to Panorama Ten to Two . The food will take forever so be prepared to wait awhile but I always think the wait is worth it.

Sporty & Outdoorsy Things

Kigali is a beautiful city with gorgeous weather and it – as long as you managed to avoid the two to three hour downpours during rainy season – is best experienced outdoors.

Play Tennis

There are tennis courts scattered all around town, often made of clay which is a nice change from the usual hard courts. Check out this list of tennis courts and see which one is your favourite.

Climb Mount Kigali

It’s more of a hill but it’s still impressive and hiking up Mount Kigali makes for a really nice few hours worth of walking. There are several paths up… none of which I actually know. Your best bet is to head to deepest, darkest Nyamirambo towards Sun City Hotel (located near Panorama 10 to 2 ) and then keep walking up until you can’t go up anymore. There ‘s a bar at the top of the steep part so you can stop in for a well-deserved cold beer before continuing on along the top of the mountain.

Go to the Gym

Gyms in Kigali range in price and quality from Rwf 2,000 per session in cramped, sweaty rooms with broken machines to US$30 per day at the Serena for good equipment, ‘free’ juice, and changing rooms that actually smell nice. Plus everything in between. Whatever your budget, finding a gym and sticking to a workout plan is a great way to keep busy in Kigali.

Play Ultimate Frisbee

There’s a gang of people who play Ultimate Frisbee several times per week on the field at Cercle Sportif, Read this article about Ultimate in Kigali for more info but the best place to keep up to date on practices, rain-outs, tournaments and all of that fun stuff can be found on their Facebook group page . They’ve been going for years and sometimes organise tournaments.

Go Horseback Riding

While you’re up on the mighty Mount Kigali pay a visit to Fazenda Sengha, the horse riding school up there and trot around while taking in a really amazing view. You can either take a lesson in their horse ring overlooking the city below, or you can do a trail ride through the trees. They’re a small operation so email the owner ( [email protected] ) to book some quality horse time.

Play Volleyball

Mamba Club in Kimihurura is a little sporting mecca with a sandy volleyball court along with a small pool, table tennis, and a bowling alley to go with brochettes and beer they have on offer at their bar. Weekends see impromptu pickup volleyball games coming together on a fairly regular basis. The level varies with the Rwandan volleyball team sometimes coming to play, or just casual games between newcomers. Either way, everyone is welcome and it’s a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon and to meet some new people in a sporty atmosphere. Spend a Day at the Pool

The weather in Kigali is wonderful and weekends here are often spent chilling at one of the city’s many swimming pools. There are a bunch of Kigali swimming pools to choose from ranging in price, awesomeness, and levels of child volume. Serena is usually the quietest and most… serene. Mille Collines, Umubano, and Cercle Sportif are all fairly large pools that are decent for laps but are often crawling with kids. The pool at the Mano Hotel has the best view in town and, while it’s small, it’s not often busy. Aloha Club (located next to Caiman ) seems to be a popular choice for that side of town.

Go for a Walk or Run

Kigali is a gorgeous city and walking its beautiful hills makes a great way to spend a day. I like walking in the valley between Kacyiru and Nyarutarama (by the ‘lake’) or the area behind the MTN Centre on the way into Kibagabaga . Or Nyamirambo offers up a more lively walk with plenty of people buzzing around alongside you. Check out my list of Kigali walks for a for some nice routes with interesting things along the way. Otherwise just get out there and explore!

Kigali’s hills make running here challenging but, if you persevere and make it to the top of those nasty hills, you’re often rewarded with a great view. If you prefer your running without hills, head to the Kimihurura roundabout. It’s around 1 km in diameter which makes keeping track of your distance fairly easy. Plus it’s a popular spot with other runners, walkers, and families who often have friendly words of encouragement as you pass. Kiyovu and Nyarutarama are also good spots with quiet, leafy, well-lit, pothole-free streets.

Enjoy Kigali’s Amazing Views

As I’ve mentioned a bunch of times, Kigali is pretty and you’ll find yourself being blown away by the views as you wander around. But to really take advantage of the wonderful views in Kigali, you’ll need to get up a few stories at least. Top Tower Hotel has a good view as does the balcony from the MTN Bourbon Cafe. Sun City Hotel in Nyamirambo gives a great view back to the city and kLab (on the top floor of Telecom House in Kacyiru) has the best view, in my opinion. This list of Kigali’s best views should help inspire you.

Take a Yoga Class

Yoga seems to have finally caught on in Kigali in a big way and there are two main groups offering classes – Yego Yoga and City Arts . Both offer several styles of yoga with a few different teachers. City Arts are located in Kimihurura and Yego Yoga offer classes at Heaven Restaurant in Kiyovu, Inema Arts in Kacyiru, and hot yoga at Mamba Club in Kimihurura. If you’re at all into yoga, these are the two groups you’ll want to get in touch with. There are also a few independent teachers around and the Serena Hotel usually offer classes with their membership.

The Hash House Harriers are a global movement of ‘drinkers with a running problem’. The Kigali club is very active and lively and they hold runs every Saturday. It’s a great way to meet new people, both locals and expats, and also to explore some hidden corners of the city. They set out a trail for walkers, too. Visit their Facebook page to meet the hashers and to keep on top of their plans each week. If you’re in Kigali alone and don’t know anyone, make time for a hash and you’re sure to have a few friends by the end of the day.

Bowling? Bowling! A bowling alley was set up at Mamba Club a couple of years ago and it’s a fun night out. They’ve imported all of the bowling gear and it’s slightly surreal being in what looks like a totally legit bowling alley that’s actually housed in a big shed. Pretty cool, nonetheless. The best part is the pin collection system which is basically a dude with a stick. Seeing arms poking out as you throw your ball down the alley adds a certain element of fear that you can’t get on bowling alleys anywhere else. The arms always get out of the way just in time but seeing them pop out at the last minute really gets the heart pumping.

Everything Else

I’m not really sure where yo put these next two things… so here they are!

There are lots of great causes you could get involved in if you plan on being in town for awhile. Teach yoga, serve lunch to hospital patients, design a website, play with kids… there are plenty of great organisations looking for committed volunteers to lend an extra set of hands and chip in with their skills. Don’t come expecting to have your food and accommodation paid for while everyone praises you for your amazingness. Just show up, help out where you can and you’ll be (hopefully) be rewarded with some new friends, great memories, and a positive experience. Go to Quiz Night

Quiz on Monday nights at Sol e Luna is a Kigali institution. It’s been happening consistently for years. Every week like clockwork. It’s packed with new arrivals and is 99% foreigners but it can be a pretty fun night and a nice way for a new arrival to get a bit familiar with the expat social scene.

Akabenz is referring to Mercedes Benz. As it is more expensive than normal meat (goat or chicken meat). You may notice that there are only few pigs in Rwanda, mainly goats, chicken and cows. There is even a Kinyarwanda name (which I don’t know), but akabenz has become common tongue.

Very westernized things only. You should try to find a few cultural based things like eating sugar cane would be something most people have never done in their life.

There is a wonderful 18 hole golf course in the city. For a modest green fee you can play as non members. Also caddy’s and a rental bag (if you don’t have your own) can be obtained at reasonable fees. Kigali climate is ideal for playing golf. The area is beautiful and well maintained.

Kirsty, there is a tinge of condescension in your post. I mean what is this supposed to mean: “Ok, ok. I know. Kigali isn’t exactly a mecca of activity”?.If you wanted a replica of the west, then maybe that’s where you should have remained!You seem to be under the false impression that Rwanda aspires to be like the west.

It’s supposed to mean exactly what it sounds like… that Kigali isn’t really a city known for having lots of things to do. You read my comment correctly. I don’t find this to be condescending, just factual. That’s how it’s perceived and this article is aimed to show people that there are, in fact, lots of great things to do here.

Anyway, you appear to be grasping for something to complain about for some reason. Making the jump from my comment straight into assuming that I prefer that Rwanda aspire to be like the west and that I should go home if I don’t like it the way it is is a bit of a leap, don’t you think?

Kirsty is definitely soft, sweet and very informal. It is a very kind gesture to pen down 31 exciting things in such a light manner. With more than 3 years now, as mentioned by you, the article needs to be rewritten for everybody’s sake. Secondly, my two tourists are arriving separately on 10-September-2017 (Sunday) at Kigali Airport. One will arrive around 05:00 a.m., the other will arrive in the afternoon. I have to bring both together to Gisenyi, La Corniche for Goma. Can you suggest a nearby tourist site, where the taxi driver can take first tourist, after picking around 06:00 a.m. (Sunday) and return back to the Kigali Airport by noon?

Hii, So I came back from Kigali last week and I can say it is a good country. The Weather is cool, I just wish I can import that Weather here, this Country is just too Hot. I did fly RwandAir, its a direct flight from my Location (I hate Stopovers), and the Airline is good.

I was able to find some good hotel deals at https://www.travelbookingplace.com/ , use Kigali as the location and filter based on price; you will find some cheap hotels especially if you are on a budget.

If you like eating pepper/chili like me, be warned, they don’t cook with it. I really had issues with their food, later on, I fell in love with chicken and chips and it became my default meal. A good place to eat in Kigali is any SIMBA restaurant, they have various outlets within the City and everyone seems to know the closest one. If you want Sharwama, you should visit Kebab House, beside RDB kigali, most people know the place.

and yes, I got the Map of Kigali from Marriot hotel and it helped me to discover some cool places, especially restaurants. I really enjoyed my Stay in Kigali, hope to visit again soon.

It's got one of the lowest crime rates of any African city – in Kigali, locals and tourists can happily stroll along the park-lined boulevards long after the sun has sunk beneath the distant hills. Heading further afield? The long-distance buses which depart from the coach station in the city centre are cheap, safe and reliable.

1. Understand more about the country's chequered history

Kigali's – and Rwanda's – history is a dark one, but a visit to the country's capital provides a fascinating insight into Rwanda's post-genocide recovery. Of course, reminders of the events of 1994 are everywhere. Many of the city's churches now double as memorials – thousands of people were massacred after fleeing to these buildings, in the mistaken belief that they would be safe there. Many locals believe the world turned its back on Rwanda during its darkest hours, which makes learning about this tragic chapter of its history even more important.

2. The art scene is thriving

Kigali's first art gallery, Ivuka Arts , opened in 2007, in the neighbourhood of Kacyiru. Today, there are almost 10 galleries in the city, including Yego Arts , where you'll find work by up-and-coming artists, as well as a packed calendar of events. Another favourite is the Niyo Art Gallery – artists who exhibit here agree to donate a portion of their profits to Niyo Cultural Center, where street kids can go to learn how to sing, drum and dance. Strangely enough, one of the best places to pick up some Rwandan art is the five-star Kigali Marriott in the city centre. The lobby is home to Go Kigali, a boutique specialising in local artwork.

3. Get a taste of the local love for cricket

You don't have to be a cricket fan to be appreciate the sport here. The city's beautiful new Gahanga Cricket Stadium, with its curved buildings inspired by Rwanda's hills (and a café sponsored by Yorkshire Tea), was unveiled in 2017. The former grounds were part of the École Technique Officielle complex, the scene of one of the genocide's worst massacres, so the move was an essential part of the city's healing process. Eric Dusingizimana, the captain of Rwanda's cricket team, raised money for the new grounds' construction by breaking the world record for spending the longest time batting (he lasted 51 hours, if you were wondering). Head to this striking sports venue to take in the view of Kigali from the grassy banks and to raise a tea-themed toast to this wonderful city.

4. Dip into Kigali's cafe culture

Moving on from tea... exploring the city's brilliant cafe culture is a must and one of the top things to do in Kigali. One of our favourite spots is INZORA rooftop café , which you'll find in the city centre, behind the Dutch Embassy. 5. Enjoy the city's green spaces

Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills, and after a day pounding Kigali's steep streets you'll know why. You don't even have to leave the city to experience the country's green side – one of the best things to do in Kigali is wander its parks and gardens. You'll soon notice it's also one of Africa's cleanest cities, partly thanks to a ban on plastic bags. The city has fantastically diverse architecture, from historic buildings such as the Kandt House Museum , with its elegant stonework and rambling gardens, to more modern structures, like the illuminated, bubble-like Radisson Blu hotel. In recent years, the city's roads have also become less crowded, and this trend looks set to continue, partly due to the planned introduction of a government-funded e-bike scheme.

6. Find souvenirs with added meaning

Nyamirambo Women's Center , in the neighbourhood it's named after, is a great place to pick up colourful, locally made toys, ornaments and clothing. But it's so much more than a souvenir store – it was set up as a way of giving domestic abuse victims a source of income, and the profits go towards various good causes, including the adjacent library, where women can learn to read and write. The team behind Nyamirambo Women's Center also lead daily guided tours of the Nyamirambo neighbourhood – highlights include a visit to a fabric store and hair salon, and a traditional meal in a local home.

7. Use Kigali as a gateway to some of Rwanda's best attractions

The days when Kigali was seen merely as an entry point are long gone, but there's certainly a huge amount on offer for those who explore beyond the country beyond the capital. The good news is that some of the most exciting new attractions are close to Kigali. While Nyungwe Forest National Park, in the west of the country, remains a popular gorilla-spotting destination, the opening of Wilderness Safaris' new camp in Akagera National Park, 100 kilometres to the east of Kigali, has brought exception wildlife-spotting opportunities much closer to the city. Magashi , which opens this spring, will be a six-tent safari camp on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga. It will be the first luxury safari camp inside the park, which is home to buffalos, lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, zebra and over 500 species of birds.

8. Explore great accommodation options

Kigali has a wide range of independent hotels, in addition to properties owned by the world's biggest hotel chains. Check in to the recently opened Retreat boutique hotel and you'll find 11 stylish rooms and a beautiful spa inside a stunning building designed by Italian architects. The 99 rooms at the Onomo Hotel each have the feel of a New York loft, with minimalist decor and exposed brickwork. For a property with history, stay at the Hôtel des Mille Collines – the inspiration for the film Hotel Rwanda . In 1994, its European managers were evacuated to safety while local staff were left behind. Paul Rusesabagina was left in charge as house manager, and he's credited with saving thousands of people by sheltering them at the hotel.

Despite this dark spot in the city’s history, Kigali has grown in leaps and bounds. The new government has done everything possible to position it as a leading city in East and Central Africa.

The key attractions are the genocide memorial centers, the city markets, cultural centers, shopping malls, night life and more. Things to do in Kigali

Go bowling: The local people are not so keen on bowling because it is seen as a game for the affluent. Never the less, it is a very exciting game for families or friends because it encourages bonding and character building. Mamba club is one of the popular places for bowling. Everything is arranged is such a way as to encourage networking. If you are very social, you may end up getting the right business contacts. You can hangout after the games with families and friends. Mamba Club even has food, ice cream and food for those who may be interested.

Shopping Malls: Those interested in window or serious shopping will struggle to choose where to go from the hundreds of shopping malls in the city. There are both small and large super markets. For the best shopping experience, it is always recommended that you go to the larger malls. Here you will find groceries, toiletries, textiles, shoes and electronics. Some of the big shopping mall brands include Kigali Heights, Kigali city mall, M Peace Plaza, Masterpiece mall and Uchumi.

Skating: Skating is very popular with youths and teenagers but even elders can take part. Skating is a newly introduced activity in Kigali and like horse riding, requires some practice. The best place to learn skating while in Kigali is at SOS school in Kacyiru.  The school teaches skating for both recreation and competitions.

Play Tennis: If you love lawn or table tennis, know that Kigali has several arenas where you can register to play the games. The best tennis courts are in Amahoro stadium, Umubano Hotel, Hotel Des Milles Collines, Cercle Sportif and Nyarutarama Sports Club. Most of the courts are made of clay giving a “Roland Garros” kind of experience to the participants.

The Kigali Convention Centre: This Centre is one of the newest eye-catching architectural marvels in Kigali city. The Architects came up with an interesting beehive-like design which consists of shinning glass and a powerful beam for the night. Most of the popular conferences are held at the Kigali Convention Centre. The Kigali Convention Centre has helped Rwanda become a venue for many international conferences. The Radisson Blu Hotel is an extension of the large Convention Centre.

Watch Soccer and Amahoro stadium: If you are a soccer fanatic, there is no better place to go to than the popular Amahoro stadium in Remara. Local league matches are organized here on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The game start in the afternoon or at night. If you are lucky to visit when the national team is playing, you will get to see just how patriotic the people of Rwanda are.

Go jogging or walking: Jogging or walking around Kigali is an exciting way to discover things about the city that wouldn’t be possible in a car. The streets in Kigali are well organized and safe from criminals. There are pedestrian paths along the roads with security and intelligence personnel everywhere. You can plan your walk to the suburbs, the middle of the city or the valleys of Nyarutarama and kacyiru.

During the 1994 genocide, an influential Hotel Manager helped hide many Tutsi’s from the interahamwe militias looking for them. After decades of hostility between the two ethnic groups, elements of Rwanda’s Hutu majority government launched a genocide against the Tutsi people in April 1994. Approximately one million people had been slain by mid-July of that year. The Kigali Genocide Memorial, which houses three permanent installations, the largest of which is dedicated to honoring the events and victims of the Rwandan Genocide, has 259,000 of them buried in mass graves. Take a minute to reflect on what you’ve learnt in the Memorial’s serene gardens after you’ve gained an emotional insight into the horrors that molded Rwanda’s recent history.

Bear Witness to the Tragedies at Nyamata Church

Travel about an hour south of the city to the Nyamata Church Genocide Memorial for a more visceral education about the events of the Rwandan Genocide. Around 10,000 Tutsi sought safety within the church compound but were killed when Hutu fanatics blew open the church’s closed doors with grenades. More than 50,000 victims’ remains are buried at Nyamata today.

The original bullet holes in the roof and walls of the chapel can still be seen, and the victims’ bloodstained clothing (together with their personal goods and some of their bones) are placed inside as a terrible reminder of why the events of 1994 must never be repeated.

Discover the Story Behind the Real-Life Hotel Rwanda

The story of Hutu manager Paul Rusesabagina, who harbored hundreds of Tutsi refugees here during the Rwandan Genocide, was immortalized in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda, which followed the story of Paul Rusesabagina, who sheltered hundreds of Tutsi refugees here during the Rwandan Genocide. Despite the fact that Rusesabagina’s participation is now disputed, the hotel itself is an interesting piece of Rwandan history. Although its former brilliance has dimmed with time, it remains a magnificent spot to visit for afternoon drinks by the pool or superb local and international food in the fourth-floor restaurant. Consider that the pool was once the only source of water for the refugees besieged inside the hotel as you drink your beverage amid the beautiful flora.

Fine-tune Your Haggling Skills at Kimironko Market

Head to the large warehouse complex known as Kimironko Market, the busiest and most popular market in town, for a really immersive shopping experience, with sellers selling wares from all around Rwanda as well as East, Central, and West Africa. Souvenirs and crafts at bargain prices can be found here, as well as swaths of kitenge fabric that can be transformed into one-of-a-kind clothes by the market’s on-site seamstresses.

Kimironko also serves as a market for Rwandans, with areas dedicated to colorful fruits and vegetables, apparel, household goods, and smelly meat and seafood. The Nyamirambo Women’s Center, located in Kigali’s cosmopolitan Nyamirambo district, is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing Rwandan women with the education and skills they need to find work. The women who work here employ their talents to manufacture high-quality children’s clothes, accessories, and home decor items out of traditional kitenge textiles, which serve as beautiful mementos while also supporting the center’s community projects.

Don’t forget to join one of their renowned walking tours as well. Following a traditional snack and a Kinyarwanda lesson, you’ll tour Nyamirambo’s houses, independent enterprises, and mosques with a local guide, and then enjoy a traditional lunch at one of the ladies’ homes. Online reservations are also available for sisal basket weaving workshops and traditional cookery sessions.

Shop for Rwandan Art at the Inema Art Center

The Inema Art Center, which was founded in 2012 by two brothers with a passion for supporting and showcasing emerging Rwandan artists, is now one of the city’s best contemporary galleries, showcasing the work of emerging and established artists from around the world and serving as a studio for ten artists-in-residence who work in a variety of mediums.

Workshops and training programs for the next generation of Rwandan artists are held at the Inema Art Center, including weekly lessons for orphans with artistic aptitude, traditional dance programs for youngsters, and a crafts program for women. Visitors can view their work in the gallery or visit the gift store to purchase jewelry, linens, and leatherwork made by the center’s students. Keep a look out for live music and dancing performances on a regular basis.

Sample Rwandan Specialties Alongside the Locals

The Inzora Rooftop Café, located behind Ikirezi Bookshop, is a great example of Kigali’s thriving café culture. The rooftop terrace has spectacular views of the city and its surrounding hills, and the house coffee comes from a cooperative that benefits over 2,000 farmers. The food is fit for any Western hipster hangout, with macadamia and chia seed granola and gluten-free brownies on the menu. Everything is sourced locally, from the ingredients to the furniture. For the kids, there’s also a playhouse and a kitchen. The café is a great place to go for a relaxing brunch or some evening beverages with a view. Don’t miss the café’s weekly cocktail and tasting board event on Fridays.
