Joe Avati – ‘When I Was Your Age’ World Tour

Saturday, 28 October 2023 at 6pm and 9pm

In Joe Avati’s hilarious new show, he asks you to leave your political correctness at the door!

Internationally renowned for his inimitable style, comedian Joe Avati, who is Australian born with an Italian heritage, is a master of treading the very fine line of saying what everyone is thinking but no one dares to say, while not resorting to the use of profanities or vulgar shock tactic routines.

In his latest offering When I Was Your Age , Avati compares the ‘then versus now’ generational differences of today’s children against his own childhood, and the complexities of modern-day parenting compared to the strict upbringing of yesteryear.

Threaded throughout all of this, Avati tackles the minefield of comedians and cancel culture, the woke brigade and why people are over political correctness. His observations are not only deadly accurate, but extremely relatable to all ages.

This is a show for all the family. Bring your kids so they know what it was like when you were their age. Bring your parents to highlight how much they have changed since they were your age. Bring your friends to laugh and reminisce about growing up as teenagers when you were that age!

Duration: Approximately 90 minutes, no interval.

Aussie comedian Joe Avati set to splurge $10million on a spectacular renovation of his $4.3million heritage Melbourne mansion

  • READ MORE: Where are the stars of Acropolis Now... now?

Australian comedian Joe Avati is set to splurge millions of dollars on a massive renovation to his gorgeous Melbourne home.

Located in prestige post code Hawthorn East, the original pad is a heritage property with five bedrooms and three bathrooms.

According to Real Estate.com , the home was purchased in December 2023 $4.3million.

Avati, 50, who has an international following as a touring performer, told the Herald Sun  on Friday he plans to add a massive ultra modern extension to the home.

The extensive update will send the value of the property soaring to an estimated $14million.

Measuring 743square metres, the new digs will be designed by Melbourne's Ridolfi Architecture.

They will include a gym and cold plunge pool, and spa and sauna - and even a wellness centre.

The star comedian, who has Calabrese heritage also plans to make his own salami and prosciutto in a new purpose built cold kitchen cellar.

Other features for the luxurious renovation include a home cinema, a 'speakeasy' bar and lounge and a unique residence for both his parents and in-laws.

The funnyman additionally has plans install an ultra modern commercial kitchen.

Avati told the publication that he hopes to start construction on the property in 2025.

The Big Mamma's Boy producer further explained that the build itself will take about two years to fully complete.

The original home includes a library, lagoon and sculptured garden.

It comes after Avati listed his modern Carlton North pad with a price guide of $3.2million to $3.5million in 2021.

Avati is known to collect memorabilia from his world tours, including artwork from London, New York and Paris, and 'bits and pieces' for his bar from Chicago.

Known for his wry humour, the Italian-Australian comedian has an especially large following in Italy.

He has also known to have a big fan base in the UK, the US and Canada and in 2021 he undertook a massive world tour.

Top comedian Joe Avati reveals epic plans for Hawthorn home with hidden speakeasy, wellness centre

Australia’s recently crowned top comic Joe Avati has revealed epic plans for a Hawthorn home with its own speakeasy hidden behind a bookshelf, wellness centre, pool and salami cellar. Take a peek.

Top Aussie comic Joe Avati has revealed plans for a $14m Hawthorn East mansion influenced by the long months he spends travelling the world.

In April, Avati was named the Australian Club Entertainment Awards Comedian of the Year.

It follows a 26-year career that’s made him a global name from his motherland of Italy to the US, UK and Canada.

The funnyman has just departed for his eighth international tour “When I Was Your Age”, which will start in Milan on July 20 before returning to Australia for shows in November.

What's driving investors back into the market?

“I plan to stay away from the Vatican during my tour but I do plan to visit lots of building whilst in Italy to see if I can get some ideas for interior styling ready for my Melbourne home renovation”, Avati told The Herald Sun. Plans for his future home to host a spa, sauna, as well as a cold plunge pool and gym in its own wellness centre come from the many hours he’s spent in such spaces in hotels around the world.

Meanwhile, his Italian heritage will take shape in a cellar where he will make and store home made salami and prosciutto.

A home theatre will be more for his wife and children’s benefit, with Avati finding little time to watch the silver screen.

The Hawthorn East home Joe Avati is planning an extension for.

“And we don’t go out as much anymore, so we will build a speak-easy lounge like a piano-whiskey bar in the house,” Avati said.

Access to the latter will be through the a 1930s-style library where the door is concealed within a book shelf.

The plans will add a 743sq m (80 square) extension to an existing 232sq m heritage home between the Hawthorn area’s prestigious Sackville ward and Harcourt precinct.

It will also be home to his nearest and dearest, with the four-bedroom main house to have a pair of self-contained residences added to it, so there is space for his parents and for his parents in-law to join them at the home.

A pool for laps is also part of the home’s planned wellness centre.

“Eight people will be living there at any one time, so there will be a commercial grade kitchen in the home,” Avati said.

The home’s original architect was Nahum Barnet, famed for Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Austral Building on Collins St, Melbourne.

While the home’s exterior will retain the same heritage — an ultra-modern interior’s only signs of Barnet will be in photographs of his works to be hung on the walls.

Ridolfi Architecture boss Dominic Ridolfi is oversighting the build and worked on Avati’s former bachelor pad, a Princes Hill terrace restyled as a converted warehouse, which was named the nation’s fourth-coolest home.

Wise use of natural light and viewlines in style-conscious homes have become a hallmark of Ridolfi Architecture’s work.

Mr Ridolfi has also recently designed homes for Steven and Jo Silvagni, plus for Tony Nicolini and his DOC Restaurants.

Avati is hoping to be “turning dirt” next year after his plans are approved, with an about two-year build needed to get the house finished.

When it’s done, the property is expected to be valued at about $14m.

He isn’t the only comedian undertaking a major heritage renovation in Melbourne at the moment, with Andy Lee overhauling a South Yarra mansion .

A gym will be set beyond a dramatic, curving staircase.

The projects are quite different, but the irony is that as far as Avati sees it — neither are a laughing matter.

“It’s a massive project, and a big undertaking,” he said.

“But I get very excited by a project like this.”

Modi Moscow message: Deepen ties, no solution on battlefield

Modi and russian president vladimir putin met monday night at the latter’s dacha in the moscow suburbs of novo-ogaryovo and will hold talks at the 22nd india-russia annual summit tuesday..

joe avati tour 2023

In the inaugural bilateral visit of his third term and his first to Russia since it invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in Moscow Monday with a clear message that New Delhi sought to “play a supportive role for a peaceful and stable region” and both sides were committed to deepening their “special and privileged strategic partnership” in “futuristic areas” of co-operation.

Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met Monday night at the latter’s dacha in the Moscow suburbs of Novo-Ogaryovo and will hold talks at the 22nd India-Russia annual summit Tuesday. Sources said that the Indian side will convey to the Russians that “a solution cannot be found on the battlefield” — a formulation that goes beyond what Modi had told him at their last in-person bilateral.

joe avati tour 2023

In Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in September 2022, Modi had told Putin that “this is not the era of war” — a line that was later used in the G20’s Bali declaration that November, and by Western leaders and interlocutors to press Russia to end the war.

As a preface to the meeting, both had warm exchanges. Putin told Modi, interpreters by their side, “Param dost (Dear friend)… You have a lot of ideas. You are very energetic, and you know how to get results for the benefit of India and the Indian people.”

“And the results are evidence, India is a confident, third largest economy in the world, and the biggest country in the world, in terms of population. 23 million babies are born in India every year, this means people are planning families and they have a planning horizon which is quite extensive. And expanding means that people are feeling confident and they are sure of stability. So I congratulate you and…I am very happy to see you again,” the Russian President said.

Festive offer

Modi responded, “This is such a happy moment that you invited me to your home…I am very grateful for this. India is the mother of democracy, almost 650 million voted in this elections…It is the first time in India, over the last 60 years, when the government is re-elected for the third time. The first time it happened was with Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. And now, 60 years later, I have got this chance that people of India gave me this opportunity to serve India.”

First bilateral in NDA 3

Choosing Russia for his first bilateral visit, Modi has broken with the tradition of India’s new PM travelling first to a neighbouring country. Delhi’s engagement will be guided by the imperative of Moscow-Beijing warmth not affecting Delhi-Moscow ties.

“I have been working for 10 years in the government, and my principle is reform, perform and transform. The people voted for these very principles, and I’m confident, I believe that in my third term, I’m going to work three times as much,” Modi said.

Modi’s visit assumes significance as it comes after the G7 summit last month in Italy, where he met US President Joe Biden , French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ukraine ’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy . US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan then visited New Delhi to meet with his counterpart Ajit Doval and the PM.

Now, with Russia having an upper hand in the war and a possibility of Donald Trump returning as the US President later this year, Modi’s visit is being seen as Delhi positioning itself for what could follow six months from now.

The Ukraine war has put India in a delicate diplomatic position with its Western allies. New Delhi has walked the tightrope, not explicitly condemning the Russian invasion but calling for an international probe into the Bucha massacre in the early weeks of the war, and expressing concern over threats of nuclear war issued by Russian leaders.

India abstained from voting against Russia in several resolutions at the United Nations Security Council.

Delhi has consistently maintained it is on the side of “peace, respect for international law and support for the UN Charter”, and “strongly advocates a return to dialogue and diplomacy”. India has reiterated that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states is an essential element of the international order, a euphemism for questioning Russia’s conduct.

modi, russia, putin

Significantly, Modi’s visit to Russia comes as leaders of the 32 nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ( NATO ) gather in Washington DC from July 9-11 to celebrate 75 years of the anti-Russia military alliance.

The Prime Minister was received by First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Denis Manturov who accompanied him to the hotel from the airport in the same car.

Sources pointed out that Manturov is senior to the Deputy Prime Minister who received the Chinese President during his visit to Russia, and New Delhi was reading this as a special gesture. Incidentally, Putin’s first foreign visit after being re-elected in March this year, in what is seen by the West as a sham election, was to China and he met Chinese President Xi Jinping for the second time last week in Astana — their second meeting in four months.

On Tuesday, Modi will also lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier in the Kremlin and will visit the Rosatom Pavilion at the exhibition venue in Moscow.

These engagements will be followed by a restricted level talks between the two leaders on Tuesday, which will then be followed by delegation-level talks led by the Prime Minister and the Russian President.

Sources said that the focus of the visit is the economic agenda — energy, trade, manufacturing, fertilizers. While defence and energy are the important drivers of the relationship — taking the bilateral trade volume to an all-time high of about $65 billion — an irritant in ties has been the presence of Indians on the frontlines of the war.

Before the visit, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra had said that the issue of “early discharge of Indian nationals who have been misled into the service of the Russian army” is also expected to figure in the discussions. Four Indians have been killed and 10 have returned, but another 40 are believed to be still in Russia.

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, India has been buying large amounts of Russian oil at a discount to cushion the inflationary impact of rising crude prices. In the face of international criticism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has repeatedly said that India would continue to buy Russian oil in the interest of Indian consumers.

Before the war, the bilateral trade target was set at $30 billion by 2025. However, bilateral trade reached an all-time high of $65.70 billion in FY 2023-24.

In the area of nuclear energy, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant units 1 and 2 have already become operational and work is progressing on two more units. The two sides will also take stock of civilian nuclear cooperation.

Modi last went to Russia for the Eastern Economic Forum meeting in Vladivostok in September 2019; Putin last visited India in December 2021 for the annual bilateral summit.

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Monday and toured him around his residence outside Moscow ahead of official talks in the Kremlin on Tuesday.

Putin embraced the Indian leader at his home at Novo-Ogaryovo, greeted him as his "dear friend" and said he was "very happy" to see him, according to an account by Russia's TASS state news agency.

"Our official talks are tomorrow, while today in this comfortable, cozy setting we can probably discuss the same issues, but unofficially," TASS quoted Putin as saying.

The Russian president offered Modi, who is on his first visit to Russia in five years, tea, berries and sweets and took him on a tour of the grounds in a motorised cart.

Modi's trip to Moscow and India's relationship with Russia amid the war that Russia has been waging against Ukraine raise concerns, the U.S. State Department said.

Thousands of people have died on both sides since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. India, which has enjoyed a close relationship with Moscow for decades has refused to condemn Russia for the war, instead calling for an end to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Russian state news agencies said Putin and Modi visited the residence's stable and watched a show with performing horses.

A top Indian official said last week that fixing India's trade imbalance with Russia and securing the discharge of Indian citizens who were "misled" into fighting in the Ukraine war would be among Modi's top priorities in Moscow.

India, which has links with Moscow dating from the Soviet era, has increased purchases of cheap Russian oil to record levels.

MOSCOW (AP) — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Moscow on Monday for a two-day visit , his first since Russia sent troops into Ukraine, complicating the relationship between the longtime partners and pushing Russia closer to India’s rival, China.

Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin at his residence outside Moscow, to be followed by talks at the Kremlin on Tuesday. Modi last traveled to Russia in 2019, when he attended a forum in the far eastern port of Vladivostok and met with Putin. The leaders also saw each other in September 2022 in Uzbekistan, at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization bloc.

Modi posted photos of his arrival in Moscow on the social media platform X, in both Russian and English, saying he was “looking forward to further deepening the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between our nations.”

“Stronger ties between our nations will greatly benefit our people,” he wrote, also sharing a picture of himself and Putin hugging.

Later, the two leaders were pictured in videos shared by the Kremlin at Putin’s residence, Novo-Ogaryovo, near Moscow.

Image

Putin drove Modi around the grounds in a buggy and showed him his stable with horses. According to state news agencies, the two had earlier watched a horse show with performers in national Russian dress.

Modi thanked Putin on X for hosting him at Novo-Ogaryovo and said he was looking forward to Tuesday’s talks which he hoped will “go a long way in further cementing the bonds of friendship between India and Russia.”

Russia has had strong ties with India since the Cold War , and New Delhi’s importance as a key trading partner has grown since the Kremlin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022. China and India have become key buyers of Russian oil following sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies that shut most Western markets off to Russian exports. India now gets more than 40% of its oil imports from Russia, according to analysts.

Under Modi’s leadership, India has avoided condemning Russia’s military action in Ukraine while emphasizing the need for a peaceful settlement.

The partnership between Moscow and New Delhi has become fraught, however, as Russia has moved closer to China. Modi notably stayed away from last week’s summit in Kazakhstan of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a security grouping founded by Moscow and Beijing.

Chietigj Bajpaee, senior South Asia research fellow at the U.K.-based Chatham House, said India is increasingly estranged from forums in which Russia and China play a prominent role.

“This is evident in India’s relatively low-key presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization last year, and now the decision by Modi not to attend this year’s summit,” Bajpaee said.

A confrontation in June 2020 along the disputed China-India border dramatically altered their already touchy relationship as rival troops fought with rocks, clubs and fists. At least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers were killed. Tensions have persisted despite talks — and have seeped into how New Delhi looks at Moscow.

“Russia’s relations with China have been a matter of some concern for India in the context of Chinese increased assertiveness in the region,” D. Bala Venkatesh Verma, a former Indian ambassador to Russia, told The Associated Press.

But Modi is expected to seek to continue close relations with Russia, which is also a major defense supplier for India.

With Moscow’s arms industries mostly serving the Russian military in Ukraine, India has been diversifying its defense procurements, buying more from the U.S., Israel, France and Italy.

“Defense cooperation will clearly be a priority area,” Bajpaee said, adding that 60% of India’s military equipment and systems is “still of Russian origin.”

“We’ve seen some delay in the deliveries of spare parts ... following the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” he said. “I believe both countries are due to conclude a military logistics agreement, which would pave the way for more defense exchanges.”

Following an arrest warrant issued in 2023 by the International Criminal Court for his actions in Ukraine, Putin’s foreign travel has been sparse in recent years, so Modi’s trip could help the Russian leader boost his clout.

“We kind of see Putin going on a nostalgia trip — you know, he was in Vietnam, he was in North Korea,” said Theresa Fallon, an analyst at the Center for Russia, Europe, Asia Studies. “In my view, he’s trying to demonstrate that he’s not a vassal to China, that he has options, that Russia is still a great power.”

Alexander Gabuev, head of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, said that Putin’s interactions on the world stage show he “is far from isolated” and that Russia is not a country to be discounted.

Trade development also will figure strongly in the talks, particularly intentions to develop a maritime corridor between India’s major port of Chennai and Vladivostok, the gateway to Russia’s Far East.

India-Russia trade has seen a sharp increase, touching close to $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, due to strong energy cooperation, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra told reporters Friday.

Imports from Russia touched $60 billion and exports from India $4 billion in the 2023-24 financial year, Kwatra said. India’s financial year runs from April to March.

He said India was trying to correct the trade imbalance with Russia by increasing its exports. India’s top exports to Russia include drugs and pharmaceutical products, telecom instruments, iron and steel, marine products and machinery.

Its top imports from Russia include crude oil and petroleum products, coal and coke, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, fertilizer, vegetable oil, gold and silver.

US President Joe Biden is now speaking at a NATO summit in Washington.

Mr Biden begins his speech by speaking about how NATO was formed following the Second World War in a bid to "answer threats at once" and to "prevent future wars and protect democracy".

Speaking about the growth of NATO, he says that "Finland and Sweden joined the alliance not just because their leaders thought it, but because their citizens called for it, in overwhelming number".

Mr Biden adds that Russian President Vladimir Putin "wants nothing less than Ukraine's total subjection".

"Make no mistake, Russia is losing this war," he says.

He tells the room that "Putin won't stop at Ukraine" but that NATO's full support can help Ukraine stop Putin's aggression.

Moving on to support for Ukraine, the US president says the country will go "to the front of the line" when it comes to receiving air defence intercept systems from the US, Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, and Italy.

Mr Biden says the US will help provide a "historic donation of air defence equipment", with "dozens" of additional tactical air defence systems.

Mr Biden then quotes former US president Ronald Reagan: "If our fellow democracies are not secure, we cannot be secure."

He then presents Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary-general, with the presidential medal of freedom.

President Joe Biden has just finished speaking at a NATO summit in Washington.

During his speech, he announced that the US and other NATO allies will send Ukraine dozens of air defence systems in the coming months - including at least four of the powerful Patriot systems that Kyiv has been desperately seeking.

According to the statement, the US, Germany and Romania will send Ukraine additional Patriot batteries, while the Netherlands and others will provide Patriot components to make up one more battery.

While Italy will provide a SAMP-T air defence system.

Other nations, including Canada, Norway, Spain and the UK, will provide a number of other systems that will help Ukraine expand its coverage.

Earlier today, Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post that air defence is still his country's key request, adding he is "confident we will succeed" in being given them.

We're still waiting for US President Joe Biden to take to the stage at the NATO summit in Washington.

Currently, Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's secretary-general, is speaking.

He says that NATO - celebrating its 75th year - is the "safest, most strong and longest lasting alliance in history".

You can follow along by watching the live stream above.

A state-owned arms manufacturer from Ukraine has opened its first foreign office in Washington.

Ukroboronprom is seeking to work more closely with allies to step up weapons production and counter Russia's invasion.

"Its main task is to promote joint US-Ukrainian defence projects and enhance our integration into NATO's defence industrial base," strategic industries minister Oleksandr Kamyshin said on X.

For context: Ukraine has been trying to build up its domestic armaments sector since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 and has urged its allies to agree joint ventures, invest in Ukrainian businesses, and place orders for Ukrainian weapons.

Last year, Kyiv agreed with two US firms to jointly manufacture vital 155mm artillery shells in Ukraine, although production was not expected to start for at least two years.

Last month, Ukroboronprom launched a partnership with German defence conglomerate Rheinmetall that saw a workshop established in Ukraine for the repair and production of armoured vehicles.

Ukraine's foreign minister reiterated that an agreement on an end to the war in Ukraine should be reached with Kyiv's participation.

It follows Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban holding talks on a potential peace deal in Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, angering some EU leaders who warned against appeasing Moscow.

It was the first meeting of an EU leader with Putin in Moscow since April 2022.

"Our position - no agreements on Ukraine without Ukraine," Dmytro Kuleba told national TV today.

Yesterday, Ukraine's foreign ministry released a statement saying their policy "remains unshakable" and they called on "all states to observe it strictly".

Mr Orban has been a critic of Western military aid to Kyiv and the sanctions placed against Russia since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago.

"We cannot sit back and wait for the war to miraculously end," he wrote on X.

The director of Ukraine's largest children's hospital, hit on Monday by a deadly missile strike blamed on Russia, said the attack is "beyond the limits of humanity".

Dr Volodymyr Zhovnir spoke to the UN Security Council today, where he said more two adults were killed and more than 300 people were injured in the attack.

Ukraine published photos of what it said were recovered fragments of a Russia cruise missile that hit the hospital in Kyiv.

Sky News have been able to verify that the missile that struck the hospital was indeed launched by Russia ( see 19.30pm post ).

“At 10.42am we felt a powerful explosion," said Dr Zhovnir.

"The ground shook and the floor trembled. Both children and adults screamed and cried from fear and the wounded from pain. It was real hell.

"We could hear people crying out for help from beneath the rubble."

He also listed what was destroyed, with 24 hospital departments damaged including oncology, intensive care, operating rooms, and prenatal care.

"To strike a children’s hospital where children are treated for cancer and other heavy diseases is not just a war crime. It is far beyond the limits of humanity," he added.

Ukraine has published what it says is "unequivocal" evidence a Russian missile hit Kyiv's largest children's hospital.

The Okhmatdyt Hospital treats 20,000 people a year. A two-storey wing helping children with cancer was destroyed in the attack.

It's the deadliest airstrike in Ukraine for months - on the eve of a NATO summit and as China and Belarus start military exercises near the Polish border - what reaction can we expect?

Niall Paterson is joined by Jimmy Rushton, a Kyiv-based journalist and defence analyst, to hear more about the damage and the reaction from those in Ukraine's capital. Plus, he speaks to our defence and security editor Deborah Haynes.

By Sam Doak, OSINT producer

Shortly after the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital was hit yesterday, a video circulated showing a missile filmed in its immediate vicinity.

Using the location the video was filmed, the site that was hit, and the visible trajectory of the missile in the video, Sky News determined this was the weapon responsible for the destruction at the hospital.

In higher quality versions of this video, distinctive features such as fins and an external engine are visible.

These details allow the missile to be identified by experts as a Russian Kh-101.

Analysts at the defence intelligence firm Janes told Sky News that they assessed the video shows a Kh-101.

According to Missile Threat, a resource maintained by the Center for Strategic and International Studies’s Missile Defence Project, Kh-101s are designed to be fired from aircraft and "defeat air defence systems by flying at low, terrain-hugging altitudes".

Earlier today, Ukrainian officials released a series of photographs on Telegram showing what they claim to be fragments of the Russian missile found at the hospital.

Speaking to Sky News, Former US Army explosive ordnance disposal technician Trevor Ball confirmed that the fragments shown in the photographs resembled those from a Kh-101.

Sky News matched features, including fittings on what is reported to be a piece of the missile’s engine.

As initially reported by the investigative journalism outlet Bellingcat, other fragments photographed correspond to reference images published by the Ukrainian government to aid in identifying Russian munitions.

Kyiv is observing a day of mourning after a series of devastating Russian missile strikes killed 41 people and injured more than 150 others across Ukraine yesterday.

By  Ivor Bennett , Moscow correspondent

These are awkward comments for the Kremlin. You can just imagine Vladimir Putin's advisors wincing behind the scenes.

Because it's not a great look - having your guest of honour criticise you on your own turf.

Narendra Modi didn't explicitly accuse Russia of bombing the children's hospital but the words he chose heavily implied that.

"When innocent children are killed...the heart bleeds and that pain is very terrifying," India's prime minister said.

Note the word "killed". He could have said "die".

I think this shows he doesn't buy Russia's claim that the hit on the hospital was from a Ukrainian air defence missile gone wrong.

That didn't stop the Kremlin doubling down on that today, though, with Putin's spokesperson Dmitry Peskov calling it a "PR stunt".

Until now, India has walked a tightrope of neutrality on the Ukraine war.

It's been careful not to condemn Russia's invasion - maintaining good relations with the West while simultaneously becoming a key trading partner for Moscow.

But Modi's comments today suggest he feels that a line has been crossed.

Having said that, his visit here has still served a purpose for Vladimir Putin. Just look at the images.

The long embrace, tea on the veranda, the tour of the stables, the ride in the buggy....

If the intention was to show NATO leaders that Russia is not as isolated as they might think, then you could say the Kremlin has succeeded.

Verbally, yes, there was a slap on the wrist from Modi. But visually, it was all backslaps and bonhomie.

And this is powerful ammunition when it comes to the diplomatic war that's being waged alongside the one on the battlefield.

Modi's visit may not have gone to plan, but it most certainly hasn't backfired.

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer says the NATO summit in Washington is a chance for its members to send a message to Russia following its "appalling" attacks on Ukraine.

The newly appointed PM was speaking from Stansted Airport, where he is due to fly to the US and meet with world leaders, including Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

His comments come after Russia launched one of its worst set of missile strikes on Ukraine in months, with at least 41 people killed and 166 injured.

The main children's hospital in Kyiv was among buildings hit in cities across the country yesterday.

Mr Starmer said: "My message is very, very clear that this NATO summit is an opportunity for allies to stand together, to strengthen their resolve, particularly in light of that appalling attack, against Russian aggression.

"I'm pleased to have the opportunity to affirm and reaffirm Labour's strong support, unshakeable support, for NATO.

"We are a founding member. It's now the 75th anniversary, but this is an opportunity to send that message in relation to Russian aggression wherever.

"But that attack last week was appalling. And so the message is even more important now than it was before."
