Hyundai integrates machine learning into smart cruise control

Adam Gavine

Hyundai has independently developed what it says is the world’s first machine learning-based smart cruise control (SCC-ML) technology, a system that incorporates the driver’s patterns into its self-driving behaviour, to create a travel experience suitable for the individual driver. The technology incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) within the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), and is planned for implementation in future Hyundai Motor Group vehicles.

Smart cruise control (SCC) enables self-driving features and is a core technology for ADAS, maintaining an appropriate distance from the vehicle ahead while travelling at the speed selected by the driver. The SCC-ML combines AI and SCC into a system that learns the driver’s patterns and habits on its own, and through machine learning, can then autonomously drive in the same patterns as the driver.

“The SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features,” said Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group. “Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving.”

In order to operate current SCC systems, the driver manually adjusts driving patterns, such as the distance from the preceding vehicle and acceleration. As good as the systems are, they are not able to meticulously fine-tune the settings to accommodate the driver’s individual preferences.

For example, a driver may accelerate differently in high speed, mid speed and low-speed environments, depending on the circumstances. Therefore, when SCC is activated, the vehicle may operate in a different way to their preferences, and when drivers sense this difference they may feel anxious and thus reluctant to use the technology. However, the detailed fine-tuning enabled by  machine-learning technology makes the vehicle’s operation closer to their own individual driving style.

kia smart cruise control machine learning

So how does SCC-ML work? First, sensors such as the front camera and radar constantly acquire driving information and send it to the centralised computer, which then extracts relevant details from the gathered information to identify the driver’s patterns. An artificial intelligence technology – the machine-learning algorithm – is applied during this process.

The driving pattern can be categorised into three parts: distance from preceding vehicles, acceleration patterns, and responsiveness (how quickly the driver responds to driving conditions). Driving conditions and speeds are also considered.

For instance, the system would maintain a short distance from the preceding vehicle during slow city driving and further away when driving in the overtaking lane of a freeway. Taking into account these various conditions, SCC-ML makes an analysis to distinguish over 10,000 patterns, and this flexible SCC technology can adapt to any driver’s patterns. The driving pattern information is regularly updated with sensors, reflecting the driver’s latest driving style. In addition, SCC-ML is programmed specifically to avoid learning unsafe driving patterns.

According to Hyundai, SCC-ML achieves Level 2.5 self-driving. which is useful for upcoming highway driving assist systems that feature automatic lane-change assistance.

Hyundai's Smart Cruise Control system learns as you drive

Byron Hurd

If you find yourself fascinated by advanced cruise control and self-driving technology, but dislike the way those systems tend to behave when they're in control, there may be hope thanks to a new machine-learning system from Hyundai, which does its best to imitate your driving habits.

Called Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control, or SCC-ML for short, this cruise control system monitors your behavior behind the wheel in an effort to replicate it when left to its own devices. Hyundai will further develop this new machine-learning A.I. to help overcome the objections of customers who are not comfortable with the driving behavior of existing adaptive cruise control and potentially upcoming self-driving technology.

Most systems require the driver to manually set certain options within an adaptive cruise control system, such as following distance and acceleration speed—which is usually an option reserved for higher-end systems—in order to reach something resembling their normal comfort zone. Hyundai's system eliminates that fine-tuning entirely, relying instead on observing human drivers to determine their comfort level.

Not only does this eliminate the guesswork on behalf of the driver, but it can result in a far more more versatile and fine-tuned experience. Where a typical mainstream adaptive system may offer only three or four options for following distance, Hyundai's SCC-ML offers more than 10,000 unique driving patterns.

Hyundai said this new technology can dramatically improve both the performance of its cruise control systems and drivers' confidence when using them. It will introduce it in future Hyundai cars, as well as those from Kia and Genesis, but the timeline for implementation isn't clear.

Story

Hyundai Motor Group has announced the development of the world's first Machine Learning based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML), a technology that incorporates the driver's patterns into its self-driving behaviour, thereby creating a custom experience for the driver. The technology, an industry first, incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) within the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) feature. The system will make its way to production vehicles of the Group very soon.

Smart Cruise Control enables an essential self-driving feature and core technology for ADAS: maintaining distance from the vehicle ahead while traveling at the speed selected by the driver. Through machine learning, Smart Cruise Control autonomously drives in an identical pattern as that of the driver.

Woongjun Jang, VP at Hyundai Motor Group, said, "The new SCC-ML improves upon the intelligence of the previous ADAS technology to dramatically improve the practicality of semi-autonomous features. Hyundai Motor Group will continue the development efforts on innovative AI technologies to lead the industry in the field of autonomous driving."

In order to operate the previous Smart Cruise Control, the driver manually adjusted driving patterns, such as the distance from the preceding vehicle and acceleration. It was impossible to meticulously fine-tune the settings to accommodate the diver's individual preferences without machine learning technology. For instance, even the same driver may accelerate differently in high-speed, mid-speed and low-speed environments depending on circumstance, but detailed fine-tuning was not available. Therefore, when Smart Cruise Control was activated and the vehicle operated differently than they prefer, drivers, sensed the difference, resulting in a reluctance to use the technology because it made them feel anxious and unstable.

Through machine learning, Smart Cruise Control autonomously drives in an identical pattern as that of the driver.

This is now the Smart Cruise Control operates. First, sensors, such as the front camera and radar, constantly acquire driving information and send it to the centralised computer. The computer then extracts relevant details from the gathered information to identify the driver's patterns. An artificial intelligence technology called machine learning algorithm is applied during this process. The driving pattern can be categorised into three parts: distance from preceding vehicles, acceleration (how quickly it accelerates), and responsiveness (how quickly it responds to driving conditions). In addition, driving conditions and speeds are considered as well.

For instance, maintaining a short distance from the preceding vehicle during slow, city driving, and further away when driving in the fast lane. Considering these various conditions, SCC-ML makes analysis to distinguish over 10 thousand patterns, developing a flexible Smart Cruise Control technology that can adapt to any driver's patterns.

The driving pattern information is regularly updated with sensors, reflecting the driver's latest driving style. In addition, SCC-ML is programmed specifically to avoid learning unsafe driving patterns, increasing its reliability and safety.

Hyundai is building cruise control that mimics your driving style

With machine learning, the automaker thinks it can make the feature more appealing to use.

kia smart cruise control machine learning

If you've never used a car's cruise control functionality, the first time can be a jarring experience. Driving a car is a deeply personal experience; we all have our own driving styles and each car has its own quirks. South Korean automaker Hyundai thinks it can make the experience of using cruise control more intuitive by adding machine learning to the mix.

Hyundai thinks you'll be more likely to use its new  machine learning-based Smart Cruise Control (SCC-ML)  because it will be able to match your own driving style. As for how SCC-ML works, Hyundai says the feature adjusts for a couple of factors. First, it will mimic the distance you keep between your vehicle and the car in front of you. It also takes into account acceleration, as well as how you respond to changes in traffic. Where Hyundai thinks its new cruise control will improve on any existing system is that it won't take a single approach to every situation. The company claims SCC-ML will be smart enough to know that you don't always keep the same distance from another car, and that you accelerate differently depending on your current speed.

The automaker claims SCC-ML can also adapt to any driver, though it's also quick to point out the system won't pick up unsafe driving habits. Additionally, the system is programmed to adapt to your driving style as it evolves over time.

Hyundai isn't the only automaker working on creating better cruise control. Earlier this year,  BMW revealed  it's working on a system that'll be able to read traffic lights , thereby making the feature more useful in cities. Hyundai, however, hasn't mentioned whether its new system will be able to account for traffic lights, so it's hard to say if you'll want to use outside of highways.

Hyundai Smart Cruise Control-Machine Learning (SCC-ML)

2019: announcement.

At the end of October, 2019 Hyundai Motor Group reported that it developed the first-ever system of artificial intelligence which estimates a manner of driving and applies it to a cruise control.

A new system received the name Smart Cruise Control-Machine Learning (SCC-ML), i.e. a "smart" cruise control with machine learning. Its work is based on consecutive collection of data on the driver's habits using the front camera and radar sensors. Algorithms of machine learning , in turn, use the acquired information for permanent self-training of a system adaptive a cruise control.

kia smart cruise control machine learning

Hyundai Motor notes that the new technology estimates a driving manner on three key parameters: distance to the car moving ahead, acceleration and sensitivity of the driver to road conditions, such as obstacles in the route. The SCC-ML system uses about 10,000 types of behavioural scenarios and adjusts them with the greatest comfort for the driver, adapting to a situation on the road.

The car maker claims that SCC-ML can be considered as technology of autonomous driving of the 2.5 level as it includes the assistant to change of a lane and the assistant to driving on the highway. They provide autonomous steering, acceleration and deceleration of the car and also support the mode of preserving of a distance with the object moving ahead. Now the majority of technologies a cruise control offers the 2nd level of autonomous driving.

Developers note that SCC-ML will not study "harmful" habits of the driver, but will be able to adapt under the changing style of driving, everyone improves the skills. Hyundai Motor and its Kia Motors Corp branch are going to implement gradually this technology in new models of cars. [1]
