When ‘The Return of Kiss’ Tour Hit a Snag

In February 1978, Kiss ended a grueling five-year touring cycle that helped them become one of the biggest bands in the world. Yet, when the foursome returned to the road a year and a half later for a jaunt dubbed the Return of Kiss, they found their position in the rock hierarchy was anything but secure.

The tour was to follow one of Kiss more audacious stunts, the release of four solo albums after the conclusion of their 1978 dates in support of Alive II . They'd then issued a disco hit, " I Was Made for Lovin’ You ," in advance of the May street date for Dynasty , with shows set for the entire second half of 1979.

These concerts, which began on June 15, 1979, at Lakeland, Fla., would be the biggest and boldest yet from a production standpoint, even while reflecting those solo efforts through the individual band members’ costumes. Each contained colors from their respective albums. So, Paul Stanley ’s costume was purple, Gene Simmons ’ was red, Ace Frehley ’s was blue and Peter Criss ’ was green.

The Dynasty tour also saw the introduction of several new effects in the Kiss live concert arsenal. It was during this tour that fans first got to experience Simmons flying in midair . Frehley's guitar, meanwhile, was tricked out with a new rocket-shooting stunt as well.

But something had changed since the last time Kiss toured the States. Audiences had begun shifting away from the bombastic stage presentations favored by the group. By this time, both punk and disco had gained solid footholds in the country. All of a sudden, the Kiss circus seemed somewhat out of step. Markets that had once been surefire sellouts were canceling gigs or downgrading to smaller venues.

Watch Kiss Perform on the Dynasty Tour

"It wasn't a good omen when our first show was canceled," Paul Stanley dryly notes in his book Face the Music . "The bottom got pulled right out from under us." Audiences were beginning to dwindle, and so the scale and scope of the tour was lost on many.

It was the only Kiss tour to feature tunes from all four original members' solo albums. But the band also included their sturdiest tunes to date, closing out most nights by playing "Shout It Out Loud," "Black Diamond," "Detroit Rock City," "Beth" and "Rock and Roll All Nite."

In Los Angeles, an additional night at the Forum was scaled down to the 10,000 seat Anaheim Convention Center in Orange County. A rambunctious fan base that had once painted its faces in anticipation of the spectacle to come seemed in large part to have been replaced with families. It seemed that Kiss' out-sized marketing – not to mention their new dance-influenced hit – brought in new fans, even while costing them some of the die-hard fans.

By the end of the Dynasty concert series, change was in the air. The market had turned, as had people's musical tastes. And Kiss, for the longest time, seemed lost. They would eventually resort to taking off the makeup , but not before trying a weird concept album .

In a larger sense, nothing was ever quite the same again. The final show of this tour, held Dec. 16 at the Toledo Sports Arena in Toledo, would be the last gig featuring all four original members until their 1996 reunion .

Kiss sells its music catalog and brand for over $300 million

F amed rock group Kiss has reached a deal to sell its catalog, brand name and other intellectual property to a Swedish entertainment group for more than $300 million.

The buyer, Pophouse Entertainment Group, collaborated with Kiss last year create to create digital avatars of Kiss members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, shown on stage for the first time during the band's farewell tour at New York City's Madison Square Garden in December.

Pophouse CEO Per Sundin said it also has plans for a Kiss biopic, documentary and experiences including an avatar show slated for 2027. He also said the company wants to expose Kiss to younger generations of fans.

"We work together with Universal and Kiss, even though we will own the artists rights, and we're doing it in conjunction with Kiss," Sundin said.

Bassist and lead singer Gene Simmons told the Associated Press that Kiss is indeed "in the trenches with them."

"We talk all the time. We share ideas. It's a collaboration. Paul [Stanley] and I especially, with the band, we'll stay committed to this. It's our baby," he said.

Simmons also said the band will not tour again.

"We're not going to tour again as Kiss, period," he said. "We're not going to go put the makeup on and go out there."

Kiss Sell Music Catalog, Publishing, and Imagery to Company Behind ABBA Voyage

  • By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Kiss are the latest artists to sell off their music catalog — and, in this case, their well-known onstage personas and makeup — for big money.

The band — which closed out its (alleged) farewell tour in December 2023 — announced they have sold the rights to their music and imagery to Pophouse, the Swedish company that created the ABBA Voyage hologram show and is working on a similar project involving Kiss.

While the price wasn’t revealed in a joint press release, Fortune reports that Kiss raked in upwards of $300 million in the sale. A rep for the band did not immediately respond to Rolling Stone ‘s request for comment.

The deal involves all of Kiss’ master recordings and publishing rights, and in a unique addition to other catalog acquisitions, also includes the band’s characters — Gene Simmons ’ God of Thunder, Paul Stanley ’s Star Child — and their distinct makeup.

“Life happens while you’re busy making important plans,” he added. “We were planning our respectful, proud walking off into the sunset, because we’ve been touring, we had been touring for half a century.”

During the band’s final End of the Road Tour show at Madison Square Garden , Kiss revealed that the band would live on as digital avatars in the Pophouse-produced hologram shows beginning in 2027; Pophouse’s ABBA Voyage show, currently presented in London, makes $1 million a week, Fortune reported.

“We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come,” Simmons said of the catalog dead in a statement. “Because what Pophouse is doing, is breaking rules. We already have several plans in development, where the avatar show is one, a biopic another and a KISS themed experience a third. The future could not be more exciting!”

Stanley added, “Our journey with Pophouse is fueled by the desire to eternally resonate across diverse facets of global culture. As we embark on this venture, we aim to weave our legacy into the tapestry of different worlds, ensuring that the KISS experience continues to captivate both our devoted fans and those yet to discover the thrill. This partnership is not just a chapter; it’s an eternal symphony of rock ‘n’ roll immortality.”

Pophouse CEO Per Sundin  said in December that the company is still in the process of figuring out how best to use the Industrial Light and Magic-created avatars, which are enormous, fire-breathing versions of the Kiss members in full regalia. “Is it a Kiss concert in the future? Is it a rock opera? Is it a musical? A story, an adventure? These four individuals already have superpowers. We want to be as open as possible.”

Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo kissed Chappell Roan at their concert Tuesday night (April 2), giving the indie musician a proper sendoff following her final opening set on the Guts World Tour.

Chappell Roan Brings Her ‘Pink Pony Club’ to NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’: Watch…

Toward the end of Rodrigo’s second performance at Boston’s TD Garden, the 21-year-old pop star greeted fans gathered at the barricade near the stage — something that’s become a tradition at her Guts shows. This time, though, the “Casual” singer was there waiting.

Trending on Billboard

The pair waved goodbye into the camera before making their way into the wings, signifying the end of Roan’s time on the Guts Tour.

The “Red Wine Supernova” artist has been with the trek since it kicked off in February in Palm Springs, Calif., warming up audiences across the U.S. and Canada with performances of songs from her 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess . Roan will now pass the baton to The Breeders, who will alternate with Remi Wolf and Pinkpantheress as the next tour openers.

Following her shows in Boston, Rodrigo is now headed to New York City for a four-night stint at Madison Square Garden starting Friday (April 5). On her first-ever arena tour, the former High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star has been performing tracks from her debut and sophomore albums, 2021’s Sour and 2023’s Guts , both of which topped the Billboard 200 .

Watch Rodrigo kiss Roan at their Boston concert below.

An earlier version of this story mistakenly said Rodrigo and Roan shared a kiss “on the mouth,” which has since been   changed to reflect that Rodrigo kissed Roan on the cheek.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Harry Styles' childhood village is looking for superfans to give tours, covering his first kiss and the time he took Taylor Swift to dinner

  • Harry Styles' childhood village, Holmes Chapel, is recruiting superfans as tour guides.
  • Tours aim to keep the thousands of visiting fans safe, a local group said.
  • Notable locations include a Chinese restaurant where Styles took Taylor Swift for dinner.

Insider Today

The English village where Harry Styles grew up is calling for superfans to work there as tour guides.

Holmes Chapel, a village of some 6,000 people in Cheshire, has grown in popularity in recent years with fans of the pop star.

According to a newsletter by the Holmes Chapel Partnership , a local nonprofit organization, about 5,000 visitors have followed the "Harry Styles Walking Map" since it was introduced last year.

"Even during the wet winter months, Harries have continued to visit, braving muddy banks and wet fields to pay homage at Harry's Wall," it said.

The wall, part of Twemlow Viaduct, is where Styles said he had his first kiss.

Fans now write messages on the wall's bricks, according to Secret Manchester.

Other notable spots include Mandeville's Bakery, where Styles worked before participating in the X Factor, and Fortune City Chinese Restaurant, where the pop star dined with Taylor Swift, Secret Manchester reported.

Related stories

While the map has already been a boon to local businesses, the group said it's now time to "elevate our offerings."

The group's chairman, Peter Whiers, told BBC News that they had long advocated for wider footpaths and safer pedestrian crossings, but guided tours are another way to keep visitors safe.

The partnership is rolling out an official guided tour this summer, but it now needs to recruit and train local guides.

According to a job listing on the partnership's website, the ideal candidate would have a "genuine interest in Holmes Chapel with a good knowledge of its history, including Harry Styles and his roots here."

The newsletter said the partnership is "particularly interested in recruiting Harry Styles fans aged 16+, but more senior individuals may also apply."

The position is listed as being paid, although it is unclear how much is being offered.

The Holmes Chapel Partnership did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

Whiers told BBC News that more than 100 applications had been received as of Tuesday, including some from as far away as Argentina and Australia.

"We would like a few more local ones," he told the news outlet.

Charging elephant kills an American woman on 'bucket list trip' in Zambia

An American woman who was on what she had called her "last big trip" was killed when a charging elephant flipped over the car she was traveling in at a national park in Zambia .

The “aggressive” creature buffeted the vehicle carrying six tourists and a guide, tour operator Wilderness said in a statement Tuesday. It said the 79-year-old victim died after Saturday's incident on a game drive at the Kafue National Park in western Zambia.

The company did not name the victim but Rona Wells, her daughter, identified her as Gail Mattson in a post on Facebook. She said her mother died in a “tragic accident while on her dream adventure.”

A video circulating on social media apparently showing the incident shows a large elephant running toward a car, which slows down as the animal approaches its left side. The elephant then flips the vehicle over and the passengers can be heard gasping as the car rolls over.

NBC News does not know the condition or identity of the person who filmed the video.

Photos shared online of the car, which is emblazoned with the logo of the tour operator, show it tipped onto its side after the incident, with a deep dent in two of its side doors.

Wilderness, which describes itself as a “leading conservation and hospitality company” operating in eight African countries, including Zambia, did not respond to NBC News when asked to confirm the authenticity of the video and the photos.

But the tour operator’s CEO, Keith Vincent, said in the statement that the company’s “guides are all extremely well trained and experienced.”

"Sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he added.

Gail Mattson, during a safari in Zambia

Another woman was also injured in the incident and taken to a medical facility in South Africa, the Wilderness statement said, adding that four others were treated for minor injuries.

“It’s extremely rare to see an elephant that irate,” Marlon du Toit, a wildlife photographer and safari guide, told the “TODAY” show Thursday. “Across Africa, there are thousands and thousands of guests on safari on a daily basis with no negative consequences.”

The exact cause of Mattson’s death was unclear, but the company said her body would be repatriated to her family in the United States with the support of local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in the capital, Lusaka.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died,” the statement added.

NBC News has reached out to Mattson's family for further comment.

Kafue National Park is Zambia’s largest and oldest national park, according to its website, and spans an area of more than 8,000 square miles. Vast regions of the park remain unexplored and the website says it is home to a variety of untamed wildlife.

A 'bucket list trip'

Mattson spent her winters in Sun City West, Arizona, playing bridge and cards, but during the rest of the year, she "travels all over the world," her friend Brenda Biggs told NBC News. Biggs and her husband, John Longabauth, became friends with Mattson when they moved to the area 6 ½ years ago.

Longabauth said Mattson spoke to the couple about her upcoming safari trip about two weeks ago, and called it "one of her bucket list trips." He said she was very excited for the adventure.

Before she left, she gave the couple concert tickets for a show that would happen while she was traveling, telling them to enjoy the concert and "I'll see you when I get back," Longabauth recalled of the conversation.

Biggs said Mattson, who was almost 80 years old, told her that the African safari was her "my last big trip." She said Mattson was "super excited because it was like the culmination of all the trips that she had gone on."

An avid traveler, Mattson took to trips to Europe and Asia, Longabauth recalled, noting that she might have been to South America, too.

Biggs called her friend "flamboyant," "friendly" and "fabulous" and said she loved bright colors. Mattson had taken over Biggs’ job as the event planner for their 200-member bridge club, she said.

"Gail was one of the more up people you'd ever want to meet," Longabauth said. "She was always up. She was always optimistic. She was always seeing the good side of everybody."
