Train travel in europe..., train travel in asia..., train travel in africa..., train travel in america..., train travel in australasia, london to denmark by train.

It's easy to travel from the UK to Denmark without flying.  Take Eurostar and onward trains from London to either Brussels, Cologne or Hamburg, stay overnight, then travel from Brussels, Cologne or Hamburg to Copenhagen next morning.  Or sail overnight to Holland and catch a train from Amsterdam to Copenhagen,  A great alternative to an avoidable flight, where the journey becomes part of the holiday.  This page explains the routes, trains, fares & how to buy tickets.

small bullet point

International trains to & from Copenhagen

Other useful information, interactive map :   click a route, useful country information, option 1, london to kolding, odense & copenhagen by train, london ► copenhagen  with overnight stop in brussels.

This is the most time-effective option, leaving central London in the evening after a full working day, arriving in Copenhagen in the evening next day.

London ► Copenhagen  with overnight stop in Cologne

Leave London St Pancras at 13:01 daily by Eurostar , change at Brussels Midi onto an ICE3 train arriving Cologne Hbf 18:15.

Leave London St Pancras at 15:04 daily by Eurostar , change at Brussels Midi onto an ICE3 train arriving Cologne Hbf 20:15.

London ► Copenhagen  with overnight stop in Hamburg

Leave London St Pancras at 11:04 by Eurostar to Brussels Midi , ICE3 train to Cologne , & EuroCity to Hamburg Hbf arriving 21:14.

Copenhagen ► London with overnight stop in Brussels

This can all be done all on one ticket.  The ICE trains have a restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  A later 09:26 departure is possible from Copenhagen to Brussels but with no wiggle room for delay, so I would stick with the 07:26.

Copenhagen ► London with overnight stop in Cologne

Copenhagen ► london with overnight stop in hamburg.

For example, the first departure leaves Hamburg Hbf at 06:45, change at Cologne Hbf & Brussels Midi to arrive London St Pancras at 16:57.

How much does it cost?

London to Brussels by Eurostar starts at £52 one-way or £78 return in standard class, £97 one-way, £140 return standard premier (1st class).

How to buy tickets

Buy tickets at www.raileurope.com .

This allows you to book all your tickets together in one place.  Anyone from any country can use www.raileurope.com , in plain English, international credit cards accepted and fares shown in multiple currencies. There's a small booking fee.

First book your ticket from London to wherever you plan to stay overnight (Brussels, Cologne or Hamburg).  Book this as a round trip if you're returning, because Eurostar return fares are significantly cheaper than two one-ways.  Add this to your basket.

Then book your trains from the overnight stopping point to Copenhagen one-way for the following day, add to basket, and (if returning) book from Copenhagen to the overnight stopping point one-way, add this to your basket and check out.

You print your own tickets, or after booking you can load the Eurostar ticket into the Eurostar app, and show the DB ticket on your laptop or phone.

When does booking open?

Booking for Eurostar opens up to 6 months ahead, sometimes more.  Onward trains from Brussels to Germany & Denmark opens up to 6 months ahead, but significantly less than this when the mid-December timetable change intervenes.  I recommend waiting until all your trains are open for booking before committing to a non-refundable Eurostar ticket.  More about when booking opens .

Booking tips

Fares are dynamic like air fares, so book early for the cheapest prices and avoid busy days such as Fridays or Sunday afternoons.

Is it a through ticket?

No, as there are no through tickets from London to Germany any more, DB's Sparpreis London fares were discontinued in March 2020 .  But www.raileurope.com will seamlessly sell you a Eurostar ticket from London to Brussels plus an onward German Railways ticket from Brussels to Germany, then it'll sell you a separate ticket from Germany to Copenhagen for the following day.

Seat reservations

About those tight 20-minute connections at Brussels Midi

The slick 20-minute connection in Brussels between Eurostar and an onward ICE , sometimes less than this, is usually a recognised connection which lots of people make.  It's not usually a problem, especially if you use the Brussels Midi short cut between platforms .

Even though the system sells you separate tickets either side of Brussels, you are protected by the Railteam Promise/HOTNAT so if there's a delay and you miss the connection you will be allowed to travel on later onwards trains at no extra charge.

Connecting tickets from other UK towns & cities :  See the advice on special add-on tickets here .

Another way to buy tickets

This is more work as it involves two websites, but it can be slightly cheaper for two reasons:  First, you don't pay any booking fee.  Second, you can use the Stopover feature at int.bahn.de to book a Brussels to Copenhagen through ticket, either done all in one day or with an overnight stop in Cologne or Hamburg programmed in.  This is cheaper than buying separate Brussels to Germany & Germany to Copenhagen tickets from Raileurope.

Obviously, do a dry run on both sites first to check availability & prices.  I'd also check that your outward Eurostar and ICE are indeed a recognised connection by checking that they appear together when you run a London to Cologne enquiry at int.bahn.de - read the paragraph in the previous section about the 20-minute connection in Brussels .

Step 1, book the Eurostar from London to Brussels (and back, if returning) at www.eurostar.com and print your own ticket, or load it into the Eurostar app to show on your phone.  Eurostar return fares are significantly less than two one-ways, so if you're coming back, make sure you book this as a round trip.  After booking you can use the Eurostar Manage Booking system to select an exact seat on Eurostar .

Step 2, book from Brussels to Copenhagen at the German Railways website int.bahn.de .

If you're overnighting in Brussels, Brussels-Copenhagen can be done in a day.  The tip here is to click Stopovers and enter Brussel Noord as a stopover point with length of stay left as zero. Why? You only get a cheap DB through ticket from Brussels to Copenhagen if the planner finds journeys using a DB-run ICE train between Brussels & Cologne.  These call at Brussel Noord, the competing Eurostar (formerly Thalys) trains don't.

If you are staying overnight in Cologne or Hamburg, click Stopovers , enter Brussel Noord as stopover 1 with length of stay zero and either Cologne Hbf or Hamburg Hbf as stopover 2 with a length of stay of (say) 12 hours.  You'll need to fiddle with the departure time and length of stay to get the trains you want either side of Cologne/Hamburg, it takes a bit of trial and error, which is why it's easier booking one way first, then if you're returning, book the return journey separately as another one-way.  On German trains that makes no difference to the price.

This will get you a Brussels to Copenhagen through ticket with an overnight stop in Cologne or Hamburg included, which is what you want.  If you have problems, by all means just book Brussels-Germany and Germany-Copenhagen separately.

You print your own ticket or can show it on your laptop or phone.  I recommend registering when prompted so you can log in and check your bookings or re-print tickets at any time.  An advantage of booking direct with int.bahn.de is that you can select an exact seat on many German trains from a seating plan.

Using an Interrail pass

Pass or point to point?

Let's be clear, a pass will not save money over the cheapest point-to-point advance-purchase fares you might see if you book a few months ahead.  But when point-to-point fares are expensive (for example, at short notice) OR you want flexibility, for example the ability to change your mind, re-route or reschedule as necessary, a pass might be what you need.

If flexibility is what you want, buy the pass.  If it's about saving money, you'll have to check point-to-point prices and do the maths.

It's worth doing the maths if you are under 28, if you have kids (kids get a free pass when accompanying an adult but still need to pay reservation fees) or if you live a long way from London (as a pass covers you from your home station to London). Passes are available in 1st & 2nd class.

How to use a pass for a trip to Denmark

Step 1, buy a 4-days in 1-month Interrail pass from www.raileurope.com (click Rail passes and select Europe ) or www.interrail.eu for €283 adult, €212 youth or €255 senior.  You load the pass into the Railplanner app on your phone.  See pass prices on the Interrail page .

A 4-day pass is enough to get from most places in mainland Britain to almost anywhere in Denmark & back again.

A 4-day pass gives you unlimited train travel on any 4 dates you choose in an overall 1 month period.  The first travel day can be any date you select in the 11 months after buying the pass, the overall 1 month period starts from that date.  Learn about how Interrail passes work here .

Step 2, make a Eurostar passholder reservation from London to Brussels & back for €30 each way.  See prices & how to make Eurostar passholder reservations online .  Tip:  Eurostar passholder availability is limited, so check availability before buying a pass .

Step 3, reservations between Brussels and Hamburg are optional, you can sit in any empty unreserved seat and show your pass when asked.  But it's a good idea to reserve seats, do this for around €5 each way at int.bahn.de by entering Brussels to Hamburg and clicking the Book seat only link under the red search button.

Step 4, seat reservation between Hamburg & Copenhagen is optional most of the time but compulsory in summer (June-September).  You can make Hamburg to Copenhagen reservations using the Danish Railways website as shown here .

Have your trip arranged as a package

Railbookers are a train travel specialist who can put together a tour or short break for you as a package, including rail travel, hotels & transfers.  On their website you'll find a range of suggested tours & holidays by rail which can be customised to your own requirements.  And as you're booking a package, they'll take care of you if anything happens to one part of the itinerary such as a strike or delay.

How to buy tickets by phone

What's the journey like.

1. London to Brussels by Eurostar

Eurostar trains link London & Brussels in just 2 hours, travelling at up to 300 km/h (186 mph).  There are two bar cars, power sockets at all seats and free WiFi.  Standard Premier and Business Premier fares include a light meal with wine (or breakfast, on departures before 11:00).  There's a 30-minute minimum check-in as all border formalities are carried out before you board the train.  More about Eurostar & check-in procedure .  St Pancras station guide .   Brussels Midi station guide & short cut for changing trains in Brussels .

2. Brussels to Cologne by ICE3

Germany's superb ICEs have a bistro-restaurant car, power sockets at all seats & free WiFi.  In 1st class, bistro orders are taken at your seat.  50 minutes after leaving Brussels the ICE calls at Liège, where you can admire the impressive station designed by celebrity architect Santiago Calatrava.  As you approach Cologne Hbf you'll see the twin towers of Cologne Cathedral on the right, next to the station.  More about ICE3 trains .  Brussels Midi station guide .  Cologne Hbf station guide .

4. Hamburg to Copenhagen by EuroCity train

As from June 2023, Hamburg-Copenhagen trains are operated by former German Railways intercity cars like this, now shown in the timetable as EC for EuroCity .  This is only temporary, as brand-new trains being built for DSB will be delivered in 2024.  These ex-DB intercity cars have power sockets at all seats (although no WiFi).  There's no catering car, so bring your own food & drink.  See more photos, tips & information about the Hamburg to Copenhagen journey .

On 17 June 2023, the first Copenhagen to Hamburg train to use the 'new' German intercity cars is boarding at Copenhagen.  Photo courtesy of Peter Kincey .

2nd class seats in are almost all open-plan like this.  There are a handful of 6-seat 2nd class compartments in one of the coaches.

The 1st class car has 6-seater compartments like this. Larger photo .  Larger photo .

Crossing the Little Belt ( Lillebælt in Danish) from Jutland (mainland Denmark) to Funen, the island on which Odense is located.

Option 2, London to Copenhagen via Harwich-Hoek

There are no longer any direct ferries from  the UK to Denmark.  DFDS axed its 140-year-old route from Harwich to Esbjerg in September 2014.  However, Stena Line's Harwich-Hoek van Holland route makes a useful alternative to Eurostar, with daily departures, inexpensive fares, quality private cabins with shower, toilet & satellite TV.  It's shown in orange on the route map above .

This is a good option if you need to travel at short notice when Eurostar is expensive, if you live in East Anglia, or if you want to avoid the Channel Tunnel.  Indeed, you may prefer this relaxing journey to the faster Eurostar options, cruising overnight to Holland on the Stena Line superferry in a luxury en suite cabin with shower, toilet & satellite TV ( see the video ), then travelling by daytime train to Copenhagen next day.  Why not stop off in Amsterdam on the way?

London, Cambridge, Harwich ► Copenhagen

Copenhagen ► harwich, cambridge, london.

Day 2, travel from Amsterdam to London overnight by Stena Line Rail & Sail .

Take the 18:35 Intercity train from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiedam Centrum and change onto the metro to Hoek van Holland Haven.  Travel from Hoek van Holland to London overnight on the Stena Line Rail & Sail service, sleeping in a private cabin with shower, toilet & satellite TV on board the Stena Line superferry 21:00-06:30.  Day 3, take a morning train from Harwich to London Liverpool Street, arriving around 08:56, or the direct train from Harwich to Cambridge arriving 09:41 (10:39 on Sundays).  See the Stena Line Rail & Sail page for full details .

Step 1, buy a Stena Line Rail & Sail ticket from London to Hoek van Holland online as shown on the Stena Line Rail & Sail page .

Buy the onward metro & train ticket to Amsterdam as shown on that page.

Step 2, now go to the German Railways website int.bahn.de and book from Amsterdam to Copenhagen one way.  Look in the search results for journeys only 2 changes.  If you are returning, now book from Copenhagen to Amsterdam as a separate one-way journey, but as you want an overnight stop in Hamburg, click Stopovers and enter Hamburg with length of stay 12 hours.  Again, look for a journey with just 2 changes which matches the times above.

Remember that with a through ticket you're covered if there's a delay and you miss a connection, as explained here - you are entitled to onward travel by later trains at no extra charge, and if necessary, an overnight hotel.

To buy tickets for the train & ferry service from London to Hoek van Holland, call Stena Line on 08445 762 (UK only).

You can book trains from the Netherlands to Copenhagen by phone with DB's (German Railways') English-speaking phone line on 00 49 (0)30 311 68 29 04, lines open 08:30-20:00 Monday-Friday, 09:00-13:00 weekends UK time, 1.5% fee for phone bookings.

Step 1, London to Amsterdam by train & ferry

A train takes you from London's Liverpool Street station directly to the ferry terminal at Harwich.  You walk off the train, into the terminal, get your boarding card & cabin key at the Stena Line check-in desk and walk straight onto the overnight ferry to Hoek van Holland.  The superferry Stena Britannica is the largest ferry of its kind in the world.  Have a late dinner in the restaurant, retire to bed in a private cabin with en suite toilet & shower and satellite TV.  At Hoek van Holland, you walk off the ship, through passport control and straight onto the station for the frequent metro train to Schiedam & Rotterdam.  Change at Schiedam Centrum for a Dutch Railways (NS) train to Amsterdam Centraal .  The journey from London to Holland is explained in detail on the Stena Line Rail & Sail page .  See the video .

Step 2, Amsterdam to Osnabrück by Intercity train

You take a comfortable Intercity train from Amsterdam Centraal to Osnabrück .  There are power sockets at all seats and a refreshment trolley.

Option 3, Scotland & the North to Denmark

Naturally, you can take a train up to London then travel to Denmark as described above.  You can buy special connecting train tickets from most British stations to London International, see my advice on buying connecting train tickets to London .  But DFDS Seaways ( www.dfds.com ) run an excellent overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, and P&O Ferries ( www.poferries.com ) have an overnight ferry from Hull to Rotterdam, both with comfortable private en suite cabins.  Take a train to Hamburg, stay overnight, then take a train to Copenhagen.

Scotland & the North ► Copenhagen

Day 1, take a train to either Hull or Newcastle, whichever is most convenient for where you live.

In Hull, transfer to P&O ferry terminal and sail overnight from Hull to Rotterdam by P&O cruise ferry, with bus/train connection to Amsterdam Centraal.  The ferry has bars, restaurants & cosy en suite cabins.  For details of schedule, fares & tickets, see the Hull-Rotterdam page .

In Newcastle, transfer to the DFDS ferry terminal at North Shields and sail overnight from Newcastle to Amsterdam by DFDS Seaways cruise ferry.  The ferry has bars, restaurants & cosy en suite cabins.  For details of schedule, fares & tickets see the Newcastle-Amsterdam page .

Day 2, travel from Amsterdam or Rotterdam to Hamburg by train.

It's too tight to get all the way to Copenhagen after the morning arrival of the ferries, so an overnight in Hamburg is needed.  Check times at German Railways website int.bahn.de .  For example, leave Amsterdam Centraal 11:59, change at Osnabrück and arrive Hamburg Hbf 17:14.

Copenhagen ► Scotland & the North

Day 2, transfer to the ferry port & sail overnight to Hull or Newcastle.

Travel overnight by cruise ferry from Rotterdam Europoort to Hull with P&O Ferries or IJmuiden (near Amsterdam) to Newcastle with DFDS , whichever is most convenient for where you live, arriving next morning (day 3).  Transfer to the station and take a train home.

For details of timetables, fares & how to buy tickets from Amsterdam to the UK via these ferry routes, see the Hull-Rotterdam page or the Newcastle-Amsterdam page .

Fares & how to buy tickets

Step 1, check ferry fares & book the ferry at www.dfds.com for Newcastle-Amsterdam or www.poferries.com for Hull-Rotterdam.

Step 2, buy train tickets from Amsterdam or Rotterdam to Copenhagen at the German Railways website int.bahn.de .  Amsterdam to Copenhagen starts at €37.90 in 2nd class or €69.90 in 1st class.  To get the overnight stop in Hamburg, click Stopovers and enter Hamburg Hbf with a length of stay of (say) 14 hours.  You print your own ticket, or show it on your phone.

Step 3, buy a train ticket from your local station to Newcastle or Hull any train operator website such as tfw.wales .  Make sure you allow plenty of time for the transfer from station to ferry terminal and for the ferry check-in.

Step 1, Newcastle to Amsterdam (DFDS) or Hull to Rotterdam (P&O) by overnight ferry , with private en suite cabins, restaurants, bars, cinema, a floating hotel.  If travelling with DFDS from Newcastle, a transfer bus takes you from IJmuiden ferry terminal to Amsterdam Centraal station next morning.  If travelling with P&O from Hull, a transfer bus takes you from Rotterdam Europoort ferry terminal to Rotterdam Centraal , from where frequent Dutch trains run to Utrecht or Amsterdam.

Step 2, Amsterdam to Osnabruck by Intercity train...

London to Aarhus & Aalborg

London ► aarhus, aalborg.

  • Follow the London to Kolding instructions above, stopping overnight in either Brussels, Cologne or Hamburg.
  • You simply change at Kolding for Aarhus & Aalborg,

Aalborg, Aarhus ► London

  • Take a train from  Aalborg or Aarhus to Kolding.
  • Travel from Kolding to London as shown above, stopping overnight in either Brussels, Cologne or Hamburg.

Buy tickets in the same way as for London to Copenhagen, but instead of booking from Brussels/Cologne/Hamburg to Copenhagen, book to Aarhus or Aalborg instead.

Hotels in Denmark

Suggested copenhagen hotel:  axel guldsmeden hotel.

The Axel Guldsmeden Hotel is a stone's throw from Copenhagen main station, so handy for arrivals and departures, and has been described as 'cool but not pretentious' by travellers - worth taking a look!

Backpacker hostels: www.hostelworld.com

www.hostelworld.com :  If you're on a tight budget, don't forget about backpacker hostels.  Hostelworld offers online booking of cheap private rooms or dorm beds in backpacker hostels in Paris and most other European cities at rock-bottom prices.

Travel insurance & other tips

Always take out travel insurance.

You should take out travel insurance with at least £1m or preferably £5m medical cover from a reliable insurer.  It should cover trip cancellation and loss of cash & belongings up to a reasonable limit.  These days, check you're covered for covid-19-related issues, and use an insurer whose cover isn't invalidated by well-meant but excessive Foreign Office travel advice against non-essential travel. An annual policy is usually cheapest even for just 2 or 3 trips a year, I have an annual policy with Staysure.co.uk myself.  Don't expect travel insurance to bail you out of every missed connection, see the advice on missed connections here .  Here are some suggested insurers, I get a little commission if you buy through these links, feedback always welcome.

US flag

Get an eSIM with mobile data package

Don't rely on WiFi, download an eSIM with a European mobile data package and stay connected.  Most newer mobile phones can download a virtual SIM including iPhone 11 & later, see device compatibility list .  There's no need to buy a physical SIM card!  Maya.net is a reliable eSIM data retailer with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating and a range of packages including unlimited data .

Get a Curve card for foreign travel

Most banks give you a poor exchange rate then add a foreign transaction fee on top.  A Curve MasterCard means no foreign transaction fees and gives you the mid-market exchange rate, at least up to a certain limit, £500 per month as I write this.  The money you spend on your Curve card goes straight onto one of your existing debit or credit cards.  And you can get a Curve card for free.

How it works:   1. Download the Curve app for iPhone or Android .  2. Enter your details & they'll send you a Curve MasterCard - they send to the UK and most European addresses.  3. Link your existing credit & debit cards to the app, you can link up to two cards with the free version of Curve, I link my normal debit card and my normal credit card.  4. Now use the Curve MasterCard to buy things online or in person or take cash from ATMs, exactly like a normal MasterCard. Curve does the currency conversion and puts the balance in your own currency onto whichever debit or credit card is currently selected in the Curve app.  You can even change your mind about which card it goes onto, within 14 days of the transaction.

I have a Curve Blue card myself, it means I can buy a coffee on a foreign station on a card without being stung by fees and lousy exchange rates, just by tapping the Curve card on their card reader.  The money goes through Curve to my normal debit card and is taken directly from my account (in fact I have the Curve card set up as payment card on Apple Pay on my iPhone, so can double-click my phone, let it do Face ID then tap the reader with the phone - even easier than getting a card out).  I get a little commission if you sign up to Curve, but I recommend it here because I think it's great.  See details, download the app and get a Curve card , they'll give you £5 cashback through that link.

Get a VPN for safe browsing.  Why you need a VPN

When travelling you may use free public WiFi which is often insecure.  A VPN encrypts your connection so it's always secure, even on unsecured WiFi.  It also means you can select the geographic location of the IP address you browse with, to get around geoblocking which a surprising number of websites apply.  See VPNs & why you need one explained .  ExpressVPN is a best buy with a 4.7 out of 5 Trustpilot ranking which I use myself - I've signed up as an ExpressVPN affiliate, and if you go with expressvpn.com using this link you should see a special deal, 3 months free with an annual subscription.  I also get some commission to help support this site.

Carry an Anker powerbank

Tickets, reservations, hotel bookings and Interrail or Eurail passes are often now held on your mobile phone.  You daren't let it run out of power, and you can't always rely on the phone's internal battery or on being near a power outlet.  I always carry an Anker powerbank which can recharge my phone several times over.  Buy from Amazon.co.uk or Buy from Amazon.com .

Touring cities?  Use hill walking shoes!

One of the best things I've done is swap my normal shoes for hill-walking shoes, in my case from Scarpa.  They're intended for hiking across the Pennines not wandering around Florence, but the support and cushioning for hiking works equally well when you're on your feet all day exploring foreign cities.  My feet used to give out first and limit my day, now the rest of me gives up before they do!

Can I go to Denmark? Travel restrictions from the UK

By Sarah James

Copenhagen

Travel to Denmark is currently allowed, but what are the rules for travel? Here's everything you need to know to get up to speed.

What do the new rules mean about travelling back from Denmark?

As of Friday 18 March 2022, there are no Covid travel rules in the UK, which means that returning travellers do not need to test, quarantine or fill in a passenger locator form , regardless of their vaccination status. The UK government will also stop managing any quarantine hotels from the end of March.

Previously, fully jabbed travellers did not need to take any tests to return to the UK but had to fill out a passenger locator form, while unvaccinated travellers arriving from Denmark had to pay to take a PCR test on day two and fill out a passenger locator form. They were not required to self-isolate before or after the day two test, even if the result was positive.

Are Brits allowed to visit Denmark?

Yes, although rules on arrival depend on your vaccination status. Those who have been fully-jabbed at least two weeks before, and who had their last jab no more than 270 days ago, can enter Denmark for any reason without quarantining, so long as they can present proof of their vaccination status.

Anyone who can prove they have recovered with a positive PCR test taken more than 11 days but less than 180 days ago will also be able to enter the country without having to isolate.

Those who are not yet fully jabbed must take a Covid-19 test within 24 hours of arrival in Denmark.

The London Marathon 2024 will weave through the streets of the capital from Greenwich to Westminster on Sunday 21 April, and thousands of spectators are going to be lining the route for a glimpse of their running friends.

Over 50,000 people are expected to take on the mammoth two-foot tour of London landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, Cutty Sark and Tower Bridge.

Since the inaugural 26.2 mile event in 1981, the fundraising race has raised millions for charities each year, and, with sunshine on the forecast for now, celebrations of the charitable and physical feat will take place across the city.

Here’s everything you need to know to plan the day if you’re running  or  supporting this year’s London Marathon.

London Marathon 2024 start time and date

  • The best luxury hotels in London for a stylish city break
  • The best spa hotels in London for pampering and indulgence
  • Best boutique hotels in London 2022

The London Marathon 2024 will take place on Sunday 21 April.

Exact timings for this year’s races are yet to be confirmed but staggered start times from around 8.30am are the norm, with the masses setting off in waves at 10am and all start lines closed from 11.30am.

The finish line on The Mall closes at 7.30pm and is then moved to St James’ Park until midnight.

London Marathon route

Largely unchanged since 1981, the start line for the race is in Blackheath at the top of Greenwich Park .

From here, a leg to Woolwich, jog past the Cutty Sark and stretch around Bermondsey takes runners to cross the river over Tower Bridge .

After a ring around the Isle of Dogs, it’s a relatively straight stretch along the Thames through the City of London to the Westminster finish line on The Mall.

Will there be train and tube strikes?

There is a planned overtime ban for Aslef members working for LNER on Friday 19 and Sunday 21 April (marathon day), as well as strikes on Saturday 20 April, so those travelling into London from the northeast will likely face cancellations.

Substantial road closures across the capital to make way for the race mean spectators should travel on foot or by tube – roads will reopen as and when all runners have cleared the area.

Marathon participants will receive free travel home up to 6.30pm on marathon day on the London Underground and Overground, buses and DLR.

TfL said that a modified DLR service will start at 5.30am from Tower Gateway to Lewisham so runners arrive on time to the start line.

Rail services out of London to the midlands and the northwest are also expected to be extremely busy from 6pm due to an FA Cup semi-final taking place at Wembley Stadium.

The best spots to watch the London Marathon in person

If the live BBC coverage won’t cut it and you’re coming to support from the sidelines, spectators can watch along most parts of the route, including The Highway in Wapping, where runners will pass twice.

To be in the heart of the action, the halfway point of Tower Bridge at mile 13, and the finish line at The Mall are bound to be exciting but busy. For a quieter spot to cheer, stay east and line up in Deptford or the Isle of Dogs.

Track friends and family taking part using their marathon number on the TCS London Marathon app to best position yourself to catch them on the go.

Marathon organisers advise that some areas, including those by the Cutty Sark and St James’ Park, are likely to be very busy on the day.

Five accessible viewing areas also dot the course for those with disabilities: in Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Rainbow Row, Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment.

Where to celebrate along the route

London has plenty of pubs and bars to quench the post-marathon thirst, whether you’ve been running or cheering.

In Greenwich, The Gipsy Moth has Cutty Sark views, The Angel in Bermondsey sits on the Thames and halfway pub, the Tower Bridge Arms, raises pints of IPA to passers-by.

Wet your palette in Wapping’s local Turner’s Old Star, ride the high at Pergola on the Wharf for city views, or refuel at Hung, Drawn & Quartered in Tower Hill with pies and ales.

At Victoria Embankment, board pub boat Tattershall Castle to cheer runners on for the final mile and savour a cold one at The Westminster Arms just before the finish line.

Once the race has been run, Inn the Park restaurant in St James’ Park is ideal for a light bite or head into Mercato Mayfair for a street food party in a restored church.

How to sign up for the London Marathon 2025

After a  record number of entries  signed up for the 26.2-mile race in 2024 – 578,374 applicants according to event organisers – next year’s London Marathon is bound to be another popular event.

To take on the challenge, entry is available through a ballot, international tour operators, charity spaces and athletics clubs.

The public ballot for the 2025 TCS London Marathon will open on Saturday 20 April and close the following Friday (26 April). Winners will be drawn at random and emailed in July ahead of the 27 April 2025 marathon.

5 Places to Travel Abroad With Your Kids This Year

London, lapland, and tanzania are on the cards in 2024..

  • Copy Link copied

Is it worth traveling abroad with your kids, especially with so many great options in the United States? Short answer: yes. That’s especially true if you consider one of these family-friendly destinations our writers have visited in recent months. They’ve been roaming with their children in the United Kingdom, Japan, Tanzania, Greece, and Swedish Lapland and have unearthed some great spots for the whole fam for 2024. Just try not to think about the flight there (and especially the flight home) . . .

Osaka, Japan

The entrance of Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan.

Theme parks and enticing street food are among the highlights of a visit to Osaka.

Wandering through Osaka’s neon-clad neighborhood of Shinsekai with my son—a hard-to-impress tween with a thirst for photo-worthy culinary creations—we passed takoyaki stands advertising their octopus-based wares with 3D tentacle-covered displays and a conveyor belt sushi joint adorned with an enormous rotating nigiri platter. Ultimately, we were drawn into Jumbo Tsuribune Tsurikichi , a restaurant boasting expansive pools of fish that you can catch with provided bait and rods. Here, they’ll cook and serve whatever you reel in—which, in our case, was a beast large enough to feed a family twice our size.

Memory-making experiences like this are only the beginning here, where maximalist signage beckons hungry travelers at every turn. And despite rising food costs across the globe, affordable eats are still easy to find in Osaka, making it an enticing choice for anyone looking to test their taste buds without breaking the bank. Even the pickiest of eaters will find something to love in this dynamic destination, and fun-loving families will find a variety of singular eateries. Dine alongside Pikachu at the popular Pokemon Café or enjoy impossibly cute Mario-inspired meals at Super Nintendo World at Universal Japan , which will soon offer even more options in its new Donkey Kong–themed land , slated to open in 2024.

Where to stay

“I spy” gets a whole lot more interesting when there are leopards, hippos, and warthogs to peep.

Taking a toddler on safari is not for the faint of heart; I knew if I was gonna do it, I needed serious help. Enter Go2Africa , a seasoned tour operator staffed by specialists who’ve traveled extensively with small children throughout East and Southern Africa. These experts knew exactly which camps were the family-friendliest and how to safely travel between them. They arranged private safari drives for us in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area , a UNESCO-protected World Heritage site with Africa’s densest population of large animals, and a quiet corner of Serengeti National Park. Over multiple game drives in the two regions, we spotted lions, leopards, hippos, ostriches, flamingos, warthogs, and roughly a gazillion wildebeest, but it was a dazzle of zebras lingering within arm’s reach of our 4x4 that really had my son clapping up a storm.

Check out TAASA Lodge , a boutique bush camp in a 15,000-acre concession north of the Serengeti, and Gibb’s Farm , an 80-acre organic farm and coffee plantation less than an hour from Ngorongoro Crater. Both properties hire guides, trackers, and staff who truly love children, as opposed to merely tolerate them. Both also have swimming pools—a fantastic way for kiddos to spend some time in between game drives. —Ashlea Halpern, contributing editor

Athens, Greece

Ancient history comes alive in Athens.

While history and ancient ruins may seem boring for little ones at first, Athens is actually an entertaining and educational family destination. Before you even leave, get your kids into Greek mythology and history—there’s the graphic novel series Olympians that reinterprets the mythologies and a funny and engaging podcast by National Geographic called Greeking Out that my eight-year-old son loves. Once you land, kids will be eager to see the sites that otherwise might look like crumbling dirt. When I visited last summer with my husband and two young kids, I booked a private tour with Be a Greek specifically meant for families. Our guide kept both of my children (and my husband and I) engaged with a scavenger hunt, trivia, games, and dynamic storytelling as we traipsed around the city, ticking off sites like the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Panathenaic Stadium, and Syntagma Square to see the changing of the presidential guard.

Visiting the Acropolis is a bit more challenging, so be sure to go in early morning or evening when it’s cooler and less crowded, and leave the stroller behind (way too many steps!). Kids will also enjoy the Acropolis Museum (request a “family backpack” for educational resources, puzzles, and more); riding the bright red Athens Happy Train ; going up Mount Lycabettus via cable car; and strolling around the picturesque Plaka neighborhood. When you need to escape the heat, head outside the city center to the Athens Riviera for some time at Astir Beach or to the still-in-progress Ellinikon , which already features an incredible playground and park, with more to come.

To be in the center, stay at the new boutique Apollo Palm Hotel , which offers triple rooms perfect for a family of three (or four if one child is in a crib, which can be provided) while still boasting a chic design, gorgeous rooftop bar, and delicious breakfast buffet. For a resort experience, complete with a kids club, beach, and pool, the Four Seasons Astir Palace Hotel Athens has spacious rooms and an incredibly friendly and helpful staff who clearly love children.— Devorah Lev-Tov

Swedish Lapland

My kids were just toddlers when we visited Swedish Lapland’s Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, where I pushed them in strollers as they teetered across packed-snow floors in rooms carved out from river ice by artists from around the world. (We sanely slept in the warm accommodations on site.)

On a visit this past winter on my own, I found several other reasons to plot a trip back soon with my now-older crew. The best winter adventures in this part of Sweden come with experiential elements that go beyond chasing the northern lights. At Arctic Bath in the small hamlet of Harads, I watched a British family with elementary school–age kids brave cold plunges together following a sauna session, stepping down a metal ladder straight into the frozen Lule River and whooping it up before beelining it for the outdoor hot tubs.

Nearby, the whimsical variety of cabins on stilts at Treehotel —including one shaped like a bird’s nest and another like a UFO—were pure fantastical fun, with ice fishing and snowshoeing among the activities. Sapmi Nature Camp offers three-night packages to stay with Sámi hosts in private lavvu tents on the family’s grazing lands for reindeer while learning about their modern way of life. And if you’re here in early February, the excitement of the annual Jokkmokk Winter Market draws hundreds of Indigenous people from all over the Sápmi region of Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia for an outdoor festival with live music, shopping for silverwork and traditional clothing, and many more activities.

All of the aforementioned stays are a treat worth planning a trip around. But I’m dreaming of a multi-generational winter adventure at Fjellborg Arctic Lodge , where you can arrive via dogsled from nearby Jukkasjärvi. Families stay in a luxurious four-bedroom cabin with its own sauna and outdoor hot tub overlooking Lake Väkkärä. (Smaller cabins can accommodate more people right nearby.) The lodge’s wilderness guides lead all manner of excursions—including snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice fishing.— Terry Ward

Buildings in London, UK

With musicals, green spaces, and seemingly endless restaurants, no two days in London are the same.

Courtesy of One Aldwych

From a wickedly funny Yeoman Warder guide at the Tower to a bike tour with London Bicycle and a visit to the Harry Potter studios (where all eight movies were filmed), my family’s weeklong trip across the pond proved to be equal parts educational and fun. We also adored the Matilda musical, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book, in the West End, with all four of us singing along to its catchy tunes as we left the theater. The city’s many green spaces (Hyde Park; Kensington Gardens, with the Princess Diana Memorial Playground; Battersea Park) also allow ample opportunity for little legs to stretch, run, and stop to smell the roses. With a food scene that’s the stuff of legend, eating at Indian street food chain Dishoom and plant-based Mallow in Borough Market were also musts and didn’t disappoint.

London has many great hotels . I liked the elegant 101-room One Aldwych in the heart of Covent Garden, within blocks of theaters, restaurants, and museums, such as the fantastic London Transport Museum (where kids can see double-decker buses and grown-ups can marvel at the history of the Tube). Along with spacious suites, thoughtful touches like the daily replenished complimentary mini-bar (with biscuits and chips to keep little ones happy) and a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” themed afternoon tea make the hotel truly perfect for families.— Tanvi Chheda

Swap your sambas for sneakers and get warming up that cheer voice. Britain’s biggest marathon, the London Marathon , returns to the streets of central London this weekend and it’s set to be the greatest yet. More than half a million people are set to take on the world-famous 26.2-mile course — a new record (the previous was set in 2019) — and many thousands more are set to turn out to cheer them on.

If you managed to secure a place in the running equivalent of Glastonbury, you should probably buy a lottery ticket and watch out for lightning (apparently just four per cent of applicants actually get a place, according to new data). If you weren’t lucky enough to nab a spot this year, you can still revel in the buzz and drama of race day. Bonus: no blisters. Folding bike brand Brompton is offering free bike hire to anyone supporting so you can whizz to as many cheer spots as possible. Just head to the brand’s hire stations at East India, Broadgate and Regents Place.

From the hottest support spots and celebrities to look out for, to free food and Brockwell Lido dips for finishers, here’s everything you need to know.

When is the 2024 London marathon?

travel to london from denmark

Sunday is race day and conditions are looking good, with mild temperatures, gentle winds (finally!) and lots of sunshine.

The elite and wheelchair races start from 08:30am, and the mass participation waves will kick off between 10:00am until 11:30am.

Where to watch

London Marathon

For cheer-squad novices, there are two rules for supporting: download the official London marathon app so you can track your runner, and plan ahead. The route starts in Blackheath and winds its way past many of the capital’s most iconic sights before ending on The Mall, so prepare yourself for some shoulder-barging if you want to see your runner (and your runner to see you).

The most popular cheer spots are at the Cutty Sark (mile 6), Tower Bridge (mile 12), Canary Wharf (mile 18), the Tower of London (mile 22), the London Eye and Big Ben (mile 25) and Buckingham Palace (mile 26), but you might have a better chance of wiggling your way to the front of the crowd if you pick a different spot. Miles 9 to 12 around Rotherhithe and Bermondsey are a good option if you want to give your runner a much-needed pick-me-up early-on, and miles 14 to 21 around Limehouse and Canary Wharf are a great base if you want to see your runner multiple times without having to walk too far.

That said, you might not need to walk at all. Thanks to Brompton’s special marathon day treat, supporters can bag themselves a free folding bike for getting around town. Just email [email protected] with your runner’s bib number and you’ll receive a special code. The three hire stations with access to the race route are East India Station, Broadgate, and Regents Place. For those with disabilities, the accessible cheer points can be found at Cutty Sark, Canary Wharf, Rainbow Row (Butcher Row), Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment.

See above for a map of the route on Strava. And here’s our list of the best pubs, bars and restaurants along the full 26.2-mile route.

No self-respecting British event would be complete without a train strike. Mercifully, there are no Tube strikes planned for Sunday, but if you’re taking part and have friends or family travelling into London from the Midlands or the north, they’ll need to plan ahead.

Strike action will affect the London North Eastern Railway (LNER) network with no service on Saturday 20 April, the day before the race, and reduced service on the day itself. Although strike action shouldn’t affect London trains, do note that there are planned engineering works and closures on the Elizabeth line, Waterloo & City line and the London tram on race day itself.

How to watch on TV and live stream

travel to london from denmark

If you can’t make it into the capital for race day (or fancy a lie-in), you can still enjoy the excitement on TV.

The BBC will be broadcasting the whole thing, with live coverage on BBC One from 08:30 to 14:15, before moving to BBC Two from 14:15 until 15:00. If you miss it, you can watch highlights on BBC Two from 18:00-19:00 and online on BBC iPlayer.

Which celebrities are taking part?

Romesh Ranganathan charity run

There’s something ever so slightly satisfying about watching your favourite celebrity grinding it out for 26.2 miles, looking a little less polished than they do on Instagram.

The race always attracts big names, with this year’s stars including the comedian Romesh Ranganathan, who’s running for suicide prevention charity Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM); The Woman in the Wall actress Ruth Wilson MBE, who’s running for Alzheimer’s Research UK; and ex-Doctor Who actor Christopher Eccleston, who’s running to raise awareness for charity The Big Issue.

Special mention goes to Eastenders stars Emma Barton and Jamie Borthwick, who’ll be running as their characters, Honey and Jay, for a special episode of the soap. The storyline will follow the fictional pair as they run the marathon in memory of Jay’s wife, Lola, who died of a brain tumour in 2023. If you spot them, make sure you’re smiling: you could just make your debut as an extra in the background of the show.

Who are the other stars of the amateur race?

travel to london from denmark

Fancy dress is a quintessential part of the London marathon. Remember the guy who spent five days completing the course dressed in a deep sea diving suit?

Conservation charity Save the Rhino claim to have pioneered the whole thing, when a runner completed the race wearing a 12kg rhino costume in 1992, and this year it’s debuting a new first: the marathon’s first ever rhino wheelchair costume, which will be worn by member of Wales Rugby League wheelchair team, Martin Turner.

You might also spot Dave 'the Running Telephone', who’ll be running his 25th marathon in aid of this year’s race charity, Samaritans, dressed in a telephone costume.

This year’s oldest competitor is 91-year-old David Picksley from Croydon, who has run an impressive 13 marathons to date. He’ll be walking the 26.2 mile route to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK in memory of his sister, who he lost to the disease in 1974.

Where to go after

travel to london from denmark

If you’ve got any energy left to celebrate after the finish line, fitness studio Barry’s Bootcamp will be hosting a marathon after-party at its SW1 studio. Think live music, refreshments, and free protein shakes for anyone who shows their medal. It's free to join, but you do need to sign up in advance.

They’re not the only ones handing out freebies for medal-holders. Greene King is offering a free drink of Guinness (or Guinness 0.0%), G&Ts and soft drinks to all finishers who show a medal at one of its London pubs between Sunday and Tuesday; Lush is offering medallists its all-new Cold Water Soother Epsom salt cube (worth £6) and Wiccy Magic Muscles solid massage oil (worth £8); and Franco Manca, Bills, Meatliquor and The Real Greek are among those handing out free food.

Recovery-wise, Fusion Lifestyle is offering all finishers a free swim at Brockwell Lido or North London Park Road Leisure, and online yoga site Live Yoga Teachers is offering free livestreamed recovery classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after the race. Just send in a picture of you at the finish line with your medal and they’ll send you a voucher.

Deliveroo and Boots have also teamed up to launch a ‘ Marathon Roo-covery’ hub featuring everything from bath salts and Compeed blister plasters to protein bars. Just use the code ROOCOVERY10 for £10 off all Boots products on Deliveroo.

When does the ballot open for next year?

travel to london from denmark

If you find yourself getting sucked in by the joy of the event (don’t say we didn’t warn you), there’s not long to wait until you can try your luck for a coveted place.

The London marathon 2025 is set to take place on Sunday, April 27, and the ballot opens this Saturday, April 20, the day before this year’s race. It’ll close on Friday, April 26, so you have just under a week to throw your name into the ring. Here’s to making it into that lucky four per cent.

Family flies to Denmark for 24 hours to go to original Legoland – for £200 less than UK resort

One Glasgow-based family wanted to go to Legoland on a budget (Picture: Nicola Sutcliffe / SWNS)

On a mission to recreate an iconic British family day out on a budget, one family flew to Denmark for 24 hours to visit the original Legoland.

Amazingly, they ended up spending £200 less than they would have at the UK resort, after they found return flights for £30.

46-year-old Nicola and her 57-year-old husband, Alan Sutcliffe, treated their eight-year-old son Matthew to an adventure in Legoland Billund.

The family flew from Edinburgh on April 7 at 7:20pm, when they found the cheapest flights available, and stayed in a hotel at Legoland for £165.

‘It was amazing – we got a deal from Super.com – for a private room in the Legoland hotel,’ Nicola, who is a primary school teacher from Glasgow, said.

‘We had a view of the park and got a fabulous breakfast with pastries, pancakes and gorgeous coffee.’

They then had the whole of the next day to explore the world’s first Legoland, which originally opened in Billund in June 1968 and is located next to the original Lego factory.

Before their flight at 9:55pm, they even had time to grab dinner.

Noting that their original plan was to visit the UK version in Windsor, the family were so blown away by their experience that they’re considering doing it again.

‘We were going to go to Windsor, but we realised the original is in Denmark and it’s the home of Lego,’ Nicola added.

‘It is also where the original Lego factory is – so a lot of things were ticking boxes for us to go.

‘For all three of us it was under £100 [for the flights] – we were laughing!’

When researching their original plans to visit the Windsor branch, they discovered that a return train from Scotland would cost a whopping £195 each – or £585 in total.

To make their 24-hour trip work, they brought a small rucksack between them. And, as the weather was a balmy 16C, they didn’t need to take up extra space with raincoats – they just packed some underwear and water bottles.

Legoland is also a five-minute car ride from the airport in Denmark, which saved them money on travel costs while there.

Air Canada pilots declare emergency during transatlantic flight from Toronto

Latest Videos

A routine Air Canada flight from Toronto Pearson Airport to London, England, declared an emergency on Thursday at the tail end of its journey across the Atlantic Ocean.

According to Aviation Source News , flight AC858 was travelling over the Atlantic Ocean near Northern Ireland when the emergency declaration was made.

The aircraft reportedly had less than an hour of its journey remaining when the emergency call came in. The aviation news website notes that the emergency was serious enough to prompt the use of a Squawk Code 7700 , indicating a serious issue onboard the aircraft.

The code can be inputted by the aircraft's pilots or instructed by air traffic control (ATC) and alerts the ground crew to prepare for the flight's arrival.

Medical emergency @RadarBoxCom https://t.co/KmUVRYkEk0 — Flight Emergency (@FlightEmergency) April 18, 2024

Initially, it was unclear what the nature of the emergency was, but later,  Aviation Source News determined that it was a medical emergency.

Pilots eventually changed the squawk code from 7700 to 5170, indicating that the emergency onboard was under control, and that the flight did not need to be diverted to a nearby airport.

The flight landed safely at Heathrow Airport at 3:14 p.m. local time without further incident.

Not great! Rude staff in London and the worse baggage reclaim I’ve ever seen. Great staff in flight but doubt I’ll fly with them again

You booked my 7 year old son to sit on his own without his mum and dad in s separate row between two unfriendly adult strangers. The plane was disgusting and dirty, aisles and everywhere sticky. The lounge waiting area was filthy carpet and had insufficient seats so we had to sit on it to wait for 35 minutes and my 7 year old sone played on this filthy lounge carpet. The outside of the plane appeared clean. The pilot was helpful with the route and what to expect weather etc.

The seat leg room seemed much tighter on the way home My cheese toasty wasn’t that hot - didn’t realise till half eaten

The flight boarded a little late but made up the time in flight - much appreciated. The staff were efficient and fairly friendly One of the toilets wasn’t working - having only one functioning toilet for a flight of hundreds isn’t really acceptable. I still find it amazing that the budget airlines can’t even offer free tap water to passengers.

Plane out was great, one back was cramped. Awful. Thankfully great crew!

Short flight, some waiting to board, but no issues and no frills.

San Francisco Zoo to get coveted giant pandas from China, in big win for city

A fter a months-long campaign culminating in a trip to China by Mayor London Breed , the San Francisco Zoo is due to receive its first giant pandas in decades.

“San Francisco is absolutely thrilled that we will be welcoming giant pandas to our San Francisco Zoo,” Breed said in a statement Thursday from Beijing, where she signed a memorandum of understanding with Chinese wildlife officials regarding the panda plan.

  • S.F. Zoo's giant pandas : When they might come and what's the cost

There is no firm timeline for the pandas' arrival; the announcement said it depended on the completion of an enclosure for the animals at the zoo. The number of pandas was also not specified, though pandas often have been sent in pairs.

Because of their popularity, having giant pandas is a coup for any American zoo. The bears have long served as diplomatic emissaries between the U.S. and China, with “panda diplomacy” stretching across multiple generations at Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C. But getting them is a rare and expensive opportunity, typically including a $1 million lease agreement with China.

The celebratory news comes as the San Francisco Zoo faces turmoil behind the scenes. Employees’ concerns about animal welfare and worker safety — especially in light of an incident last year when a zookeeper was chased by a grizzly bear after its den door was accidentally left open — were the subject of a recent investigation by the Chronicle.

The idea of bringing pandas to San Francisco first got publicly aired during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the city last November, when Chinese President Xi Jinping indicated in a speech that they could make an appearance in California.

In December, Breed sent a letter to Xi, urging him to send California-bound pandas to San Francisco. Then in February, news came that  the San Diego Zoo , a previous decades-long panda host, would be getting a pair. But Breed did not give up, and announced that part of the intention of her trip to China this week was for continued panda lobbying . It seemed to have paid off.

“Well, my plan is to do everything I can to make it clear that … we stand ready and willing and able to host pandas at our zoo,” Breed told Chinese media this week, in a video posted by Chinese news outlet CGTN Monday. “Can you imagine how exciting that would be for a city like San Francisco?”

On Thursday evening, Breed posted a video on X , jubilantly announcing the agreement and holding a stuffed panda bear. “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to San Francisco!”

Owned by the city, the zoo is run by the nonprofit San Francisco Zoological Society. In addition to the estimated $1 million annual price tag to rent the pandas, it could cost an estimated  $25 million to build housing for them at San Francisco Zoo, CEO and Executive Director Tanya Peterson told ABC News in February. That would be on top of the cost of maintenance and upgrades needed for the facility’s aging structures, some of which date back to the 1930s.

Previously, Peterson confirmed to the Chronicle by email that the zoo has been communicating with officials in China about bringing pandas to San Francisco. This week, Beijing Zoo engineers arrived in San Francisco to meet with S.F. Zoo engineers to discuss enclosures for the pandas.

Preparation for the giant pandas continues next month, when the National Forestry and Grassland Administration and Chinese Wildlife Conservation Association sends representatives from Beijing to San Francisco to plan out next steps.

The last time San Francisco hosted giant pandas was 1984-1985, when two of the animals, Yun-Yun and Ying-Xin, were loaned to the zoo for close to three months, attracting four times the average attendance of visitors to the S.F. Zoo, the mayor’s office said in a news statement Thursday.

Staff writers Ko Lyn Cheang, J.D. Morris and Megan Fan Munce contributed to this report.
