Mercedes Benz US International has been making the M Class, R Class, C Class, GL, GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS, Mercedes Maybach GLS, EQS SUV, Mercedes Maybach EQS SUV, and EQE SUV since 1997. I'd never been to this manufacturing facility but I would like to check it out with my dad. My family used to have the ML350, ML250 Bluetec, GLE350, and C300 Sport Sedan made from that facility.

Visited the mini museum and learned tremendously about the history of Mercedes Benz and the work and quality they put into their products. There is a lot to learn in the small museum. They also have a great little store in the museum where you can find brand merchandise with a great selection of clothes, hats, and other accessories.

My only experience here, is I drive a truck, tanker, and make deliveries here from time to time. Easy place to get to, security and unloading personnel are always very friendly and accommodating, always seems well maintained. No overnight parking onsite. Good place to deliver to, good stop!!

I wouldn't recommend driving out of the way just to come here to visit. That being said, if you are already in the Birmingham area, driving from Birmingham to Tuscaloosa, or driving from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham; then it is worth it to drop by and visit. This place does a really good job showing you the history of Mercedes-Benz, starting with a model of the first car ever designed and built by Mercedes in the early 1900s up through their most current flagship sedan, the S600 Maybach. You can see the evolution before your eyes of a small car company to the luxury car company that it is today. This museum and visitor center, while not the biggest, also manages to show you several of their other sedans, SUVs, and their performance vehicles that are part of their AMG lineup. It truly is a fascinating experience visiting this place, especially given that they show you a full model of the AMG performance engine that they build as well as the futuristic concept car they want to build. Want to know something even better? This place is free!! How can you pass that up?

As a Mercedes AMG owner I have always wanted to go to the Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. While that is still on my automotive bucket list the next best thing is the Mercedes Benz International Visitors Center is Vance, AL. This mini museum/visitor center is located right at the Mercedes SUV Plant in Alabama. Normally you can take tours of the plant as well, however there were canceled when I went due to retooling of the plant. This place is very aesthetically appealing from the outside looking in. As I stepped in I could sense the amount of history in this building. As soon as you walk in to your right there is a huge section on the AMG Performance Section. Naturally being a E55 Owner I instantly went over to that section. There is a good assortment of some of the most recent amg consumer vehicles including a c43 AMG, SLS AMG and AMG GTR. The sections have videos and a time line stating the history of amg. There also is a very cool display of a m278 bi turbo v8 and all of the parts of it broken down. The reason for this is the whole "one man one engine" mindset that Mercedes AMG has. There was also the name plaque of each of the current amg engine builders. Lastly in the section there is a replica of Lewis Hamilton's formula 1 car. There are 3 other sections of the museum that break down the safety features of there current cars and also the list of the number of patients that Mercedes has which is a ton of them! There is also a section of Mercedes first which include a replica of the first automobile, first motorcycle and first motorized cart. Also, there is a section with a timeline of actual cars that Mercedes has built over the past 100 plus years. This section wraps up with the current flagship in the Mercedes lineup the Mercedes-Maybach S650. This 200,000 plus dollar super luxury sedan looks amazing in person btw.

The visitors center is great, lots of good information. The tour depending on when you take it may not be as detailed as one would like due to the production schedule. This is a working automobile factory, and not a tourist place. It is very interesting to see how they make the American Made Mercedes-Benz automobiles. The gift shops (both the one at the plant and the one at the Visitors Center) are great!

Photo of Adam S.

Don't expect much. This is a small museum that most car manufacturers don't even have. I went there during an odd hour so I read everything on the walls and looked at the cars. I did not do the tour but would like to. I say, this is a cool place to stop by on the way but not drive out of your way to go there.

Photo of Miss O.

Traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, specifically to see the US version of Mercedes Benz manufacturing. We drove several hundred miles from Memphis, Tennessee. What a disappointment. The tour guide was informative, but I suspect because of liability laws the tour was very quick and safe. Not worth the trouble I am sorry to say. I have visit the Stuttgart, Germany, Mercedes Benz and Porsche factories. Very nice and much more information. Save you time and money and go see the real McCoys in Germany!

Photo of MustangQT M.

My review is concerning the tour I took with my mom and my boyfriend. The people at Mercedes-Benz including our tour guide were really nice. At the beginning, everyone was handed headsets with a radio along with safety goggles. We were a little confused about the need for the radio until we started walking and it was just so much easier to hear our tour guide above the noise of the factory. The tour itself was informative, almost too much so. I guess it really depends on the tour guide you have. Ours was very knowledgeable, but the terminology she used was alienating for those of us who didn't know very much about car manufacturing. Seeing the robots was pretty cool. I honestly tuned the tour guide out after about 10 minutes. Also, the tour guide made it a point to mention that the company takes a lot of pride in their safety and cleanliness. So I was confused why, at one point, we were walking around coffee that had been spilled on the floor. It was puzzling to me.

Employees of Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance to vote on joining United Auto Workers in May

by Valerie Bell

Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance (abc3340.com)

VANCE, Ala. (WBMA) — Roughly 5,000 workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance will have the chance to vote to unionize and join the United Auto Workers (UAW). The vote is expected to take place in mid-May.

SEE RELATED: Workers at Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa go public with unionizing campaign

Jeremy Kimbrell is a measurement machine operator, who has been with Mercedes for 25 years. He is in favor of unionizing.

"The issues are there, the timing is right and the workers are leading the way," said Kimbrell. "They want us to pay us less, give us less benefits and have harder work rules at work and it needs to end. We are just as good as any worker anywhere. Mercedes make billions in profit off our labor and were just looking for a fair deal."

Jacob Ryan, who works in the specialty shop as a rack builder, first began his career with Mercedes ten years ago. He also supports it and will vote yes.

"I believe it's going to improve, I believe Mercedes will become a destination employer again, people wanting to come here again. Right now they are having trouble keeping people on the line, we have new groups of people coming in every week and people just aren't staying anymore," explained Ryan.

A Mercedes-Benz spokesperson provided the following statement to ABC 33/40 news:

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) fully respects our Team Members’ choice whether to unionize and we look forward to participating in the election process to ensure every Team Member has a chance to cast their own secret-ballot vote, as well as having access to the information necessary to make an informed choice. Following the UAW’s nationwide campaign to increase its membership, MBUSI wants to ensure its team members make an informed decision. MBUSI has a proven record of competitively compensating Team Members and providing many additional benefits. We believe open and direct communication with our Team Members is the best path forward to ensure continued success.

The spokesperson said the company is not available for interviews and would not comment on their pay structure, but did say that normal meetings are held where 'multiple business topics are covered.'

"We will continue to share facts and opinions through open and direct communication to support our Team Members in making an informed decision," the spokesperson said in a written response.

Whether or not workers at Mercedes will join the United Auto Workers will be determined by votes which is expected to be totaled on May 17th. Voting is scheduled to take place, on location, from May 13 through May 17 and will be administered by the National Labor Relations Board.

The vote at Mercedes will just a few weeks after workers at Volkswagen voted on unionizing with UAW in Chattanooga, Tennessee .

If the Mercedes plant votes in favor of unionizing, nearly 10,000 autoworkers across the South will have voted to join UAW in less than one month's time. According to UAW, thousands more autoworkers have signed union cards in recent months, with public campaigns at Hyundai in Montgomery, Ala. and Toyota in Troy, Mo. Workers at more than two dozen other facilities are actively organizing.

Governor Kay Ivey provided the following statement:

Since Mercedes Benz announced they were making our state home to their first U.S. manufacturing facility in 1993, tens of thousands of Alabama families have been positively impacted. Let me be crystal clear that Joe Biden’s UAW has no interest in seeing Alabamians succeed. Instead, their interest here is ensuring money from hardworking Alabama families ends up in the UAW bank account. That is why they are willing to spend $40 million to gain a foothold in the Southeast’s automotive powerhouse.

Mercedes-Benz workers in Tuscaloosa County will vote on union in May

mercedes vance tours

Workers at Mercedes-Benz’s plant in Vance will vote on a union between May 13 and May 17.

The vote will come after months of organizing in the plant by workers who say compensation has stalled at the factory, widely credited with starting Alabama’s automotive industry in the 1990s.

“We are ready to vote yes because we are ready to win our fair share,” Jeremy Kimbrell, a longtime worker at the plant who has participated in previous union drives, said in a statement released by the United Auto Workers, which announced the election and is coordinating the efforts. “We are going to end the Alabama discount and replace it with what our state actually needs. Workers sticking together and sticking by our community.”

A spokeswoman with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) confirmed the election dates in a statement on Thursday. The NLRB expects to count votes and announce results on May 17.

A spokeswoman for Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI), which operates the Vance plant, said in a statement Thursday that the company’s primary focus “is always to provide a safe and supportive work environment for our team members.”

“MBUSI fully respects our team members’ choice whether to unionize and we look forward to participating in the election process to ensure every team member has a chance to cast their own secret-ballot vote, as well as having access to the information necessary to make an informed choice,” the statement said.

The election will involve  5,200 employees at the plant , according to filings with the NLRB.

The UAW  said in February  that a majority of workers at Mercedes-Benz had signaled support for a union. In applying for an election earlier this month, the UAW said a “supermajority” of workers at the plant had signed a petition for the union, though it did not provide figures. The UAW  said in January  that it would call for an election when 70% of workers signaled their support for the union.

The Vance plant manufactures the GLE and GLS, two of Mercedes-Benz’s luxury SUV models. It also produces the EQS and EQE, two luxury electric cars.

Mercedes-Benz announced that it would build the Vance plant in 1993 and opened it in 1997. The company, drawn by a major economic incentive package and cheaper labor costs in the South, was the first of several car manufacturers and suppliers to locate in Alabama. Hyundai has a plant in Montgomery and Honda has a plant in Lincoln.

UAW launched several previous union drives at the Mercedes plant, including one in 2014, but the campaigns did not lead to union elections. However, workers at the Mercedes plant say that pay and benefits have stagnated, and objected irregular shifts and the use of temporary workers.

Auto workers in Alabama are generally paid well by state standards. An Alabama Arise report published in November said workers in the state’s automobile industry make an average of $64,682 a year, higher than the median household income of $59,674.

But the report also found that Alabama workers make less than their national counterparts and that real wages in the state industry have fallen 11% between 2002 and 2019.

The union drive has drawn opposition from Gov. Kay Ivey and the Business Council of Alabama. Ivey said in February that a union would take “hope and prosperity from our folks.” She also signed a statement with six governors of southern states released earlier this week claiming that the union drive would lead to job cuts.

“The experience in our states is when employees have a direct relationship with their employers, that makes for a more positive working environment,” the statement said. “They can advocate for themselves and what is important to them without outside influence.”

The governors’ statement did not address the workers’ concerns.

“We’re tired of Mercedes executives rolling things back,” said Billy Guyton, a Mercedes worker, in a statement released by the UAW. “We’re going to roll our union forward.”

Workers at Volkswagen in Chattanooga, Tennessee began voting on a union on Wednesday. The UAW has also launched an organization drive at Hyundai’s plant outside Montgomery.

Alabama’s unionization rate is lower than the nation’s but the highest in the South. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 7.5% of Alabama’s workforce (156,000 people) belonged to a union in 2023, while 8.6% (180,000 people) were represented by unions.

Why some Alabama Mercedes-Benz workers oppose union: ‘There’s no way I’d bring the UAW in’

Electric SUV production at Mercedes-Benz

It didn’t take long for team leader Melissa Howell, 19 years on the job at Mercedes-Benz in Vance, to realize that this latest attempt to organize under the United Auto Workers was different.

“There’s wasn’t one, single moment,” Howell said. “It was just quick, a short period of time. I realized, this is serious this time.”

Jay White, in supplier quality operations, said he knew from the number of people openly talking about a union.

Jeff Cheek, after 11 years with the company, said he’s not sure how next month’s union election among the auto factory’s 6,000 employees will go.

“I’ll say this,” he chuckled, “if the threat of a union gets us more money, I ain’t gonna turn that down.”

Voting is scheduled to take place May 13 and 17 on whether workers at Mercedes-Benz U.S. International (MBUSI) will join the UAW. Vote totals are expected May 17.

The election is the capper to a whirlwind six months where the union was able to gather a supermajority of the workforce to sign union cards and petition for an election. With an estimated 5,200 signing cards, one would assume the outcome of the election will follow that of Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant, which overwhelmingly voted for the UAW last week .

Pro-union workers at the plant attribute their success in organizing this time - after several unsuccessful attempts - to national leadership’s willingness to let them carry out their own strategy.

UAW President Shawn Fain said in an interview this weekend he thinks workers at Mercedes “definitely want a union, and I believe a big majority there will vote in favor.”

But for some long-time employees at the auto plant, the union promises ring hollow. White attributes the UAW’s success so far to the “amount of money behind it.”

Cheek said his father’s experience in the United Transportation Union has made him wary of the UAW, and White has friends who have belonged to unions.

“I speak for myself,” White said. “I don’t need anyone else to speak for me. My success or failure is ultimately up to me. It’s my personal responsibility. The side effects of the union are things like shop stewards, and pushing you out if you have skills but don’t have seniority.”

All three employees said they believe much of the union push is coming from young workers hired in recent years who hear the union promises of better pay and benefits. They also say Mercedes-Benz brought some of the pushback on itself by policies in recent years.

“The company is at fault, for sure,” Howell said. “There are times they were going after the almighty buck. The company has got some responsibility for how this push is going so hard. People aren’t happy.”

MBUSI

Specifically, they name a few of the issues raised by union supporters - two-tier pay, temp workers, lump sums instead of raises. White said two-tier pay is no longer an issue, while temps were an industry wide response to the Great Recession of more than a decade ago.

But Cheek said measures like these changed the character of the plant’s workforce and made a union possible.

“The past few years, Mercedes has hired people they wouldn’t normally have hired,” he said.

“When Mercedes brought temps in, they started hiring at lower pay grades. Instead of getting people who are changing careers, you’re getting people from McDonald’s.”

A younger workforce, White said, some on their “first, best job,” are relying on the promises of what a union will bring them.

But the union drive has also caught up older employees, they say. White was surprised to see one long-time employee on pro-union literature, while Howell said she encountered a co-worker whose support surprised her.

“I said, tell me what’s happening. He gave me specifics. I’m the type person that, even if I don’t agree with you, I’m going to listen to you because it’s going to help me solve the problem,” she said. “Some of them have valid concerns. There are some of them talking about things that just aren’t going to happen.”

White said he feels there will be a significant pushback when the vote happens next month, but he was caught off guard by how many workers voted in the Chattanooga election. About 3,600 employees of the plant’s 5,500 workforce participated in the election, with the UAW garnering 73% of the vote.

Howell said she knows a co-worker who signed a union card, but has said she plans to vote against the UAW after reading up on the union.

“From my point of view, I and my friends don’t want a union, and we’re making a push that everybody votes. That everyone has their voice heard.”

Cheek said he believes some employees see the vote as a way to “get back at the company,” but he does not believe the union is the “lesser of two evils.”

“For me and a bunch of my co-workers, the UAW is not the answer,” he said. “The UAW’s history is kinda crooked. They don’t have the best track record. They’ve always eyeballed the South as like a crown jewel. As unhappy as I may be, it’s not for me to invite them to come in. That’s unnecessary.”
