Cenote Azul is located just a 20-minute drive from Playa del Carmen , making it a popular escape for locals and travelers alike . It is truly one of the best places to cool down on a hot Yucatan day!

This open-air cenote is a great place to snorkel with small fish, go cliff jumping or relax in the shaded areas, making it good for adventure seekers as well as those simply looking for a spot to relax.

We’ve visited Cenote Azul several times – just the two of us as well as with our daughter (who was 5 months old at the time!). 

In this guide to Cenote Azul, we are sharing the tips we’ve learned so you know exactly what to expect!

What to expect at Cenote Azul

This cenote is open air – more similar to a shallow lake than the cave cenotes you often see pictures of. 

There are lots of small fish swimming around in the shallow turquoise waters of Cenote Azul, making it a fun place to go snorkeling .

There are also cliffs from which adventure-seekers jump into a deeper section of the pools.

Cenote Azul is surrounded by local flora and fauna , making this place feel like a true jungle oasis. You will find lots of tables and benches scattered throughout the lush trails that surround Cenote Azul, making it a fun place to relax for a good part of the day.

What is a Cenote?

A cenote ( pronounced say-NO-tay ) is a natural sink hole. 

Cenotes are very common throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Some sources claim there are more than 6,000 cenotes in the Yucatan, while others say that number is closer to 10,000. Whatever the exact count, one thing’s for certain: The Yucatan has a lot of cenotes.

Cenotes were the only source of freshwater for the Mayan people who resided in the jungle and near the ocean. For this reason, cenotes were considered sacred. 

In many ways, cenotes represented both life (water) and death, and were an integral part of ancient Mayan life.

We’ve visited Cenote Azul a handful of times and love the wide range of activities it has and the endless areas to relax and soak up the sun (or shade) on those hot Yucatan days.

It’s an ideal paradise whether you’re traveling solo, as a family, or in a group! 

Fun spot for cliff jumping

Get your adrenaline pumping by jumping off a 15-foot cliff into the turquoise blue water. This is an exciting way to enter the cenote and step outside of your comfort zone. 

Otherwise, if you’re not a fan of heights, there is a dock for a less intimidating alternative , where you can watch the thrill seekers jump.

You can see fish

Freshwater fish of all shapes and sizes can be spotted around the cenote. The pool also serves as a natural fish spa , where the smaller guppies will come and nibble your feet.

There is a shop on site where you can buy fish food or rent snorkel gear to get a better look at all the different species.

Family friendly

Cenote Azul is one of the most easily accessible pools in the Yucatan , making it very easy to bring little ones along. 

Since the cenote is rather large and open-air, there are many spots with shallow water , plenty points of interest to keep kids entertained , and areas with ample shade .

Trails and benches

Benches are dotted around the cenote where you can enjoy a snack or relax. If you’re interested in exploring, use the trails around the cenote to try and spot local wildlife.

Shade and sun

Since the cenote is so large, there are many areas where you can soak in the sun or enjoy a picnic under cool shade.

Small pools for privacy

There are a variety of smaller, shallow pools that make up the cenote offering a bit more solitude from the main swimming area.

Clear waters

Limestone filtered rainwater is one of the cenotes main sources. This filtration creates crystal clear freshwater where you can see all the way to the bottom !

At an impressive 600-feet wide, Cenote Azul is believed to be one of the largest in all of Mexico .

What separates it from the other thousands of cenotes is that it’s open air, whereas most are tucked away in cave systems among stalactite and stalagmite formations.

Although Cenote Azul began as an underground cave and river system, once the limestone roof eroded and eventually collapsed, it created a massive sinkhole.

Then, the pristine lagoon was formed by rainwater and the hundreds of miles of connected streams and waterways flowing into the hole, creating the cenote.

Rules at Cenote Azul

There are several rules that you must follow at Cenote Azul. Please be respectful of this special place and follow the rules.

1. Shower before entering the cenote 

There is an open-air shower area near the entrance where you can rinse off.

2. Sunscreen is prohibited 

This is a rule at all cenotes. Yes, even reef safe sunscreen.  

If you are fair-skinned (like Ben!), you might want to stick to the shaded parts of the cenote. Thankfully there are many spots in the shade! 

Be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses. You can also wear a layer, like a thin shirt, to protect your skin. 

Psst! This also goes for bug spray as well. Anything with chemicals can damage this fragile ecosystem.

3. No drinking or smoking

This should be self explanatory.

4. Know what you CAN’T bring

There are many things that are not allowed at Cenote Azul.

5. Be respectful when taking photos

This isn’t a rule as much as a common sense practice. Be mindful when you are taking photos, especially in a place like a cenote where people are wearing bathing suits. 

6. Do not feed the fish (or other wildlife)

This should be another common sense thing, but do not feed the fish or any other animals you see. This is not good for them, and it is not good for the environment for food scraps to be left out. 

7. Dispose of waste properly

There are trash bins for this purpose. If you see any litter, it’s nice to pick it up and put it in a bin so you leave the place better than you found it.

Where is Cenote Azul?

Cenote Azul is located on the Yucatan Peninsula. 

The closest nearby city is Playa del Carmen, which is just over 20 minutes by car.

A. Cancun to Cenote Azul

Distance from Cancun to Cenote Azul: 57 miles (92 km)

Driving time: just under 2 hours

B. Playa del Carmen to Cenote Azul

Distance from Playa del Carmen to Cenote Azul: 16 miles (25 km)

Driving time: 22 minutes

D. Tulum to Cenote Azul

Distance from Tulum to Cenote Azul: 25 miles (40 km)

Driving time: 32 minutes

How to get to Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is 40 km (25 miles) away from Tulum and 25 km (15 miles) from Playa del Carmen. 

There are a few ways to get there depending on your budget and travel style, however we discuss the best two methods of getting there below.

A rental car in Mexico is one of the best ways to get to Cenote Azul since it gives you the ultimate freedom with your schedule. There are also a handful of other cenotes nearby that you’ll be able to visit if you have your own car (more on those at the end of this post).

Getting there is straightforward from many popular areas of the Yucatan since it’s right off the highway and there is a large sign at the pulloff.

Directions (from Tulum, Cancun, or Playa del Carmen): Follow the Carretera Federal (Federal Highway) until you see a pull off with a sign for Cenote Azul.

We use Discover Cars to search and compare prices from all the rental car options in the area, and have found it generally saves us money in the long run.

While browsing for your rental, note that the prices will seem much cheaper than the actual price you end up paying. Listed prices often don’t include the cost of insurance or additional fees, so it’s important to read the fine print during your search.

Traveling by bus is a cheap and convenient way of getting to Cenote Azul.

There are many Colectivo buses that depart from Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen that will drop you off directly at the entrance. From there, it’s only a short walk to the main swimming area.

Tips for visiting Cenote Azul

We’ve been to Cenote Azul on a number of different occasions and put together this list of helpful tips from our personal experience.

1. Wear shoes that can get wet

The bottom of the cenote has some sharp rocks, so we’d recommend wearing shoes that can get wet, like Chacos.

2. Pack your own food

Bring your own snacks and (non-alcoholic) drinks, as the onsite snack shop doesn’t have many options.

3. Plan on snorkeling

The waters are really clear and you’ll be able to see many fish. We’d recommend bringing your own snorkel if you have one.

4. Don’t bother with the lockers (unless you really need to)

The lockers are basically next to the parking lot, so they aren’t very convenient if you need to access your belongings. 

Unless you have something valuable that you need to keep secure, we’d recommend keeping your belongings on you or leaving them in the trunk of your car (out of sight).

5. Bring sun protection

Since sunscreen is not allowed in cenotes , wear a light layer that covers your skin. 

Also, bring a hat and sunglasses, and find spots in the shade to limit your direct sun exposure.

Important Tip: If you are snorkeling, we’d encourage you to wear a shirt as your back will be exposed to the direct sun. It can be deceiving because the water keeps you cool, but it can lead to a nasty sunburn!

6. Don’t forget cash

They don’t accept credit cards, so be sure you have Mexican pesos for your entrance fee and any rental equipment or snacks you will need.

There is no ATM on site, so you will need to get money out before you get here.

7. Come on a weekday if possible

Weekday mornings are the least busy time to visit Cenote Azul.

Best time to visit Cenote Azul

Azul is one of the most popular cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, so you can expect to share the area with plenty of other tourists.

Overall, weekdays and mornings are the least crowded . Weekends, especially Sundays, are one of the busiest times to visit.

Visitation is also dependent on the local weather. The Yucatan is divided into two seasons: wet and dry.

Expect the highest crowds during the dry season when the weather is sunny and mild and the fewest crowds during the hot and humid wet season.

There are actually quite a few facilities built up around Cenote Azul. Here is what you can expect. 

It is free to park if you have paid the entrance fee to the cenote.

Nothing special, but you can change into your swimsuit here if needed.

Cold water, open air showers to rinse off before entering the cenote.

Small snack shop

There aren’t many options, so we’d recommend bringing your own food.

Rental Equipment Available

Life jackets, snorkel equipment and lockers are available for rent.

Snorkel rental: 70 pesos ($4)

Good to know: If you plan to rent gear, you will need to leave your ID (drivers license) or pay a refundable deposit of 400 pesos (~$20).

How long do you need at Cenote Azul?

We’d recommend allotting around 2 hours at Cenote Azul. 

This will give you plenty of time for relaxing in the shade, swimming and snorkeling and maybe even cliff jumping.

How deep is Cenote Azul?

Much of Cenote Azul is very shallow, with lots of sections that are waist-deep. However, there are some deeper areas too. 

The deepest part of Cenote Azul is said to be around 33 feet (10 meters).

Is Cenote Azul suitable for children?

Yes, this is a family-friendly cenote. 

We brought our daughter when she was just 5 months old and we had a great time. We saw lots of other families with kids of all ages.

Just be sure to keep an eye on your children when they are in the water (obviously!).

What to pack for Cenote Azul

• Mask and snorkel
• Sarong or cover up
• Turkish Towel or microfiber towel ( this is our favorite! )
• Wide brimmed hat
• Long sleeve swim shirt or rash guard for sun protection
• Deck of cards
• Change of clothes
• Cash (they do not accept credit cards)

Cenote Azul

Cenote azul a place of extraordinary beauty, perfect to enjoy and relax.

Located just south of Puerto Aventuras right up the 307 highway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum , Cenote Azul is one of the largest cenotes in the whole Yucatan Peninsula (which is filled with about 6,000 cenotes in total).

Due to its open air type and unique size, Cenote Azul or Blue Cenote is one of the most popular cenotes in the Riviera Maya and definitely a favorite of families as its shallow pools are perfect for children to swim and have a good time.

As you may know, cenotes are underground rivers formed naturally by rain water filtering through the limestone floor typical of the region. Some scientists even think that some of these cenotes were originally formed by the same meteorite that killed the dinosaurs millions of years ago, as it hit exactly in the area where the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula are located. The holes formed by this extraordinary collision were slowly but steadily filled with rain water over the years, creating this fascinating ecosystem that’s unique in the world and attracts so many visitors all year round.

Some cenotes, such as Cenote Azul , are open air sinkholes that have become natural pools of fresh water, while others stay mostly underground offering great opportunities for divers to discover their submarine caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites. ç

The peculiarity about Cenote Azul is that although at 600 feet wide it’s one of the largest in the region filled with open pools of different depths, it also has it’s hidden caves underground for divers to explore, offering the best of both worlds.

Activities Due to its large extension, Cenote Azul offers lots of possibilities for visitors. As said before, families love it because they can stay in the natural pools of shallow waters and relax knowing that their kids will be safe in these small and cute natural swimming pools. Swimming

These pools are also popular among grown ups who just want to sit down, sunbath, and let the numerous little fish present in these waters to “eat from their feet skin” as in some very expensive Spas in the region. As long as you don’t make any sudden movement the fish will come to you and give you their special treatment while cleaning your skin of its dead cells you no longer need.

Cliff Jumping

For the most adventurous visitor, Cenote Azul also features a series of deeper pools where you can practice cliff jumping and experiment with different acrobatic jumps. Teenagers love this area as it offers more of a challenge for them and because it also provides more space for swimming around and explore a little bit deeper.

Near to this cliff jumping section you find an area where visitors usually practice snorkeling. As the waters are deeper and the natural pools larger, visitors can explore at ease and enjoy in wonder while discovering actual dept of the underwater world of Cenote Azul and looking at the different types fish you can find here.

You can bring your own snorkeling equipment or rent one at the entrance, in any case the experience is unforgettable as the crystal clear waters of Cenote Azul offer extraordinary visibility underwater.

Scuba Diving

Finally, scuba divers enthusiasts can also practice their favorite activity at Cenote Azul. As it’s not a particularly deep cenote (maximum depth tops at about 30 meters), it’s the perfect setting for beginning divers. To practice scuba diving at Cenote Azul all you need is to provide a level one Open Water certification.

However, in contrast with what happens with snorkeling equipment, in order to practice scuba diving at Cenote Azul you need to bring your own equipment or rent it from a nearby diving center and bring it yourself, as there’s no diving shop within the Cenote Azul facilities.

Location, Price & Rules

You can find the entrance to Cenote Azul at the Cancun - Tulum highway (also known as 307 highway) at kilometer 266. This is right in front of the Barceló resorts complex and right after Cenote Cristalino and Cenote Jardín del Edén.

The entrance fee is just $150 pesos or about $8 USD depending on the currency exchange at the time of your visit. If required, the entrance fee includes a life vest. Before visiting Cenote Azul it’s important to remember that you can’t use a normal sunscreen here. The only sunscreen accepted is biodegradable sunscreen to avoid polluting the waters of the cenote. Same thing with mosquito and bugs repellents. Also, smoking isn’t allowed within the premises of Cenote Azul. You can bring your own food, although alcoholic beverages aren’t allowed. Pets, glass bottles, and drones aren’t allowed at Cenote Azul, and it’s the same thing for fins for swimming/snorkeling/scuba diving. These rules are in place to keep the cenote is good conditions and keep its pollution to the minimum possible. If we all respect these simple rules, we can be sure that we’ll have a Cenote Azul to visit for years to come.

How to visit Cenote Azul, Playa del Carmen: info and prices

Where is the Cenote Azul located? How to visit Cenote Azul in Playa del Carmen and how to make the most of your visit. All in one post! Read on before visiting.

The cenote Azul is a beautiful open cenote situated on the Riviera Maya in the South of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is one of the most popular cenotes in the region because of its spacious areas where to relax by the soothing waters surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

The cenote Azul also offers all the necessary facilities to make your day even more enjoyable, including lockers, a snack bar,  benches by the water, and a platform to jump, for the more adventurous.

Located on the main road (Carretera federal) that connects Playa del Carmen with Tulum, Cenote Azul is easily reachable either by bus or car. 

In this post, we will tell you all about it.

What are the cenotes ?

A cenote is a freshwater sinkhole formed by the collapsing of limestone soil, the type of stone that the Yucatan Peninsula is mainly made of. The cenotes allow us access to the water table. These holes are produced naturally by the collapse of the roof.

Sacred to the Mayan civilization they are now some of the main tourist attractions in the Yucatan Peninsula. Read more about the Mexico cenotes .

Things to know about Cenote Azul

• The entrance of this cenote is right on the main road which makes it very easy to reach by public transportation
• It’s an open-air cenote, not a cave cenote, which makes it look like a lake
• It is suitable for kids because some areas have very shallow waters with easy access
• It’s perfect for those who love to jump and makes all sorts of shenanigans because it has a a 3,5 mt high platform with 6mt deep water where you can safely jump.
• The water is always Crystal Clear and has shades of green to deep blue (hence the name)

How to get to Cenote Azul

Located at only 25 km from Playa del Carmen and 40 km from Tulum, close to Cenote Cristalino and at a few minutes away from the spectacular cave cenote Taak-Bi-ha you can choose among different ways to get to Cenote Azul. Here below we’ll tell you all about each of them. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by Car 

We believe that renting a car in the Yucatan peninsula is always a good choice because it gives you the freedom to move around and visit more places in one day at your pace without having to depend on crowded busses with unreliable schedules.

Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula is very easy but we would recommend including full insurance with 0 deductible when you rent a car, for your peace of mind.

We recommend Discover Cars because on their website you can compare different companies and their prices and you can choose between their car insurance or the ones offered by the car rental directly, or both.

So how to get to cenote Azul by ca r? Easy! You will have to get on the Carretera Federal (Federal HIghway) Playa del Carmen – Tulum and stop by the sign Cenote Azul. You will find a drive-through at the entrance where you will have to stop to pay for your entrance and then continue to drive up to the spacious car park. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by local Bus 

If you prefer to travel by local busses, whether you are in Tulum or Cancun, it’s very easy to get to the Cenote Azul by local bus, both from Playa del Carmen or Tulum . You can get on a “ colectivo ” and let them drop you off at the entrance of Cenote Azul.

There you just walk by the entrance where you would purchase your tickets and get directions on where to continue on foot.  The cenote is very close to the entrance so there is not much walking to do. 

How to get to Cenote Azul by taxi

Hiring a Taxi could be another option. We can’t give you rates because they may change and, besides every taxi driver may have their own.  However, we suggest you should ask a recommended and trustworthy taxi driver from the reception of your hotel or your host. 

Also, make sure you agree on the rate before getting in the taxi and arrange when he would pick you up as there are no taxis on site. 

Things to do in the Cenote Azul

Cenote Azul is quite large and its made of different small areas separated by natural or man-made platforms. Also, there is a beautiful trail that runs around the cenote where you can enjoy incredible views.

So, here are all the things you can do in Cenote Azul.

Protecting the beautiful nature we live in is our main concern and an aspect of traveling that is so dear to us.

Besides, if we want to continue to enjoy the incredible natural wonders on this earth, it is very important that we respect the environment and help preserve it.

The good part is that it’s not that difficult. Here we are sharing some simple rules to follow so that we may make as little impact as possible on this earth. 

• Bring trash with you
• Don’t be loud
• Don’t use any kinds of cream spray or protectors on your skin as it would contaminate the environment (even the so-called – eco friendly) 
• Always take a shower before entering a cenote 
• Don’t hang on trees
• Just don’t do any silliness that can damage the environment

What to bring to Cenote Azul

• Mosquito repellent to wear after you come out of the water as there may be many mosquitos around
• Mask and snorkel gear and life jacket are available for rent but it would be much better if you  have your own, both for hygienic purposes and for saving
• You can walk on your flip-flop although I always like to wear closed shoes when I am in the wilderness, mainly to avoid bugs bites. But it’s totally up to you

Tips to photograph the cenote Cenote Azul

Any time of day is good to photograph the cenote, although it’s better early morning or in the afternoon when the sunlight is not vertical. Although early morning photography is ideal, In any case, thanks to the lush vegetation, offering shade, you will always be able to find a good spot for a great photo.

Why are cenotes blue?

There are different factors that determine the color of the water of the seas, lagoons, rivers, cenotes… The most important are depth, the color of the bottom, salinity, temperature, geographical location, incidence of the angle of the sun when the rays penetrate the water.

A basic factor in determining color is the transparency of the water, which occurs when the water contains floating particles or few organisms.

The most intense blue occurs in crystal clear waters, where it reaches its highest purity.

The organisms reduce the penetration of light into the water, turning the water greener.

In the case of the cenotes, we also have to add the minerals from the limestone rock, which help to dye the cenotes an intense turquoise/blue.

In the cenote Azul there are undoubtedly the ideal factors for that intense blue color

How much is a taxi from Playa del Carmen to Cenote Azul?

It should be around 600 to 700 pesos. But you should always agree on the fare before confirming the service. If it’s more than 700 it’s a rip-off and we would ask another driver.

Do you pay for cenotes?

The majority of the cenotes, especially the ones on the Riviera Maya have an entrance fee that goes towards the workers’ wages and maintenance works. But of you explore around the Yucatan Peninsula you will have more chance to bump into a free cenote in the middle of nowhere.

Can you get sick from cenotes?

We don’t know of any cases of sickness from cenote swimming. However, make sure you don’t drink alcohol before jumping in the water or you don’t eat too heavily. As your body could have an unpleasant reaction to the cold water.

What should I wear to the cenotes?

Swimsuit, a rash guard so that you don’t get sunburnt and you may want to wear some water shoes for your comfort.

Can you drown in a cenote?

In the majority of the cenotes, it’s safe to swim and it’s not likely to get currents that pull you down. The deepest ones, such as Kaan Luum for example, it’s not allowed to swim for that very reason.

In any case, if you are not a good swimmer or you don’t feel comfortable you should wear a life jacket.

Are there snakes in cenotes?

Well, not exactly in the cenote, but since cenotes are normally located in the jungle surrounded by thick vegetation there could be snakes hiding around. The chances that they come out are very low because they don’t like humans.

Cenote Azul near Playa del Carmen is one of the thousands of cenotes in Mexico’s Quintana Roo state.

As its name implies (it literally translates into blue cenote ) what makes Cenote Azul stand out among others is its bright turquoise water . They offer the perfect spot to cool off from the Mexican heat.

Like many other natural sinkholes in this region of Mexico , it is a sacred site to the ancient Mayans. The rich history only adds more mystery to this already fascinating attraction.

This Cenote Azul is in the Yucatan Peninsula, not to be confused with Cenote Azul in Bacalar . It’s one of the most family-friendly cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula, beloved by locals and tourists alike.

BUT FIRST, WHAT IS A CENOTE?

You might already know what is a cenote. After all, cenotes have become super popular these past few years. If that’s the case, feel free to skip this paragraph!

However, many people don’t really know what exactly is a cenote. In my opinion, it’s really important to understand what is their significance to the Mayans .

A cenote is a natural sinkhole dating back several centuries. When limestone caves collapse they expose a natural pool. This pool then gets filled with rain water and with the water of underground rivers, to which these sinkholes are connected. And that’s how a cenote is created!

The word  cenote  comes from the Mayan term  dzonot , which means  well . Not all cenotes look the same, though. There are 3 types of cenotes :

• Open Cenotes  – Open cenotes are like natural, open pools, and they can be more or less deep. Some of these cenotes are also connected to an underground river passage (which makes them great for diving!). Examples of an open cenote include Cenote Zacil-Ha near Tulum, Cenote Cristalino, and Cenote Azul .
• Semi-open Cenotes  – As the name implies, this type of cenote has some parts that are exposed and some portions that are partially hidden by a cave. An example of a semi-open cenote is Gran Cenote .
• Cave Cenotes  – This type of cenote can be accessed via a land-level entrance. Once you make your way in, it opens up to an underground pool which can have both shallow and deep areas. Cenote Oxman , located near Valladolid, is a cave cenote.

Cenotes have great cultural and religious significance to the ancient Mayans. They believed that the cenotes were passages to the underworld , and performed rituals in them. The sites were considered sacred, and still are!

This means that you should too. Please be responsible ! Don’t litter the cenote, always take your trash back with you, and only apply biodegradable sunscreen before swimming in the cenote.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CENOTE AZUL, RIVIERA MAYA

Cenote Azul is a picture of untouched natural beauty . This water-filled, natural sinkhole is the perfect spot to dip in with its refreshing blue waters.

Cenote Azul is located close to three other popular cenotes in Playa del Carmen : Cenote Cristalino , Cenote Jardin del Eden , and Cenote Kantunchi. It’s a good idea to visit two or three cenotes since they are located close to each other. It’s the perfect day trip from Tulum or Playa del Carmen!

There is a free parking lot just outside the cenote, and you’ll find the site’s ticket booth beside it.

Cenote Azul is an open air cenote . It looks like a very large natural swimming pool – no need to make your way into a cave, or overcome your claustrophobia.

It’s one large, open swimming area that has both shallow and deep areas . Children can safely swim in the shallow areas, and you can rent a life jacket as an extra precaution. Plenty of areas have large rocks that allow you to stand in the water as well (though they can be slippery, so be careful!)

The deeper parts of the cenote are perfect for swimming and cliff diving – there’s a 15-foot natural platform you can jump from!

They say Cenote Azul is one of the biggest cenotes in all of Mexico. This means you won’t have trouble finding a quiet spot to relax and hang out with the local iguanas.

Cenote Azul is also known as a natural fish spa . The fish are really easy to spot in the crystal clear water, and when you let your feet dangle in it, they will come to nip on them . It’s pretty exhilarating (and ticklish!)

Snorkeling is another entertaining activity enjoyed there . With a good set of goggles you can observe a variety of fish and plant life underwater.

You could potentially rent snorkel equipment on-site, but I recommend you bring your own if you have it .

Like many other cenotes in the area, Cenote Azul has a few restrictions. Sunscreen and bug repellent are prohibited , as they can damage the ecosystem. Be sure not to use any before visiting; if you do, though, you can use the showers on-site to get rid of it.

Extra tip : Getting a reef-safe sunscreen is a great idea when visiting Mexico. Most cenotes and snorkel excursions won’t allow the regular. And you’ll also want to protect the environment, right?

FACILITIES AVAILABLE AT CENOTE AZUL

Being so popular, it comes as no surprise that the cenote boasts a few facilities . It’s not such an off-the-beaten-path attraction as Cenote Calavera can be.

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

Bathrooms are available , as well as changing rooms where you can get in and out of your swimwear and get changed.

Visitors can also make use of the showers . The open-air shower near the cenote allows you to rinse off before and after getting into the water, and it might even be required that you use it.

 Food at Cenote Azul

The small snack bar/restaurant on-site is a good lunch spot as it sells nibbles, soft drinks, and tacos because por qué no . If you’d rather bring a picnic basket with you, you can!

Food and beverages are permitted , but alcohol is not. If you take some anyway, you risk it being confiscated.

There’s a large parking area right outside the cenote, and parking is free . Aim to arrive early to get a good spot.

Other Facilities

On-site you can rent life jackets and snorkeling equipment , as well as lockers to keep your belongings.

If you’re with children, make sure to check out the shop that sells food to feed the fish !

As you can see, the amenities are rather basic , but you don’t really need more than this for a few hours visit to a cenote.

⚠️ Remember to take cash when visiting Cenote Azul . You’ll need it for both the entrance fee and anything you want to buy or rent at the site. While they might accept dollars, more often than not they’ll only take Mexican pesos, so you’re better off having some pesos with you.

Best time to visit Cenote Azul

You have two options to visit Cenote Azul if you want to avoid the crowds. You can visit the cenote right after it opens in the morning, or late in the afternoon before closing time.

Most tourists flock here around midday to noon and then leave to continue with the rest of their tour after lunch. It’s also recommended that you visit during the weekdays as it’s often packed with locals during the weekend.

Cenote Azul Snorkeling

Cenote Azul is perfect for snorkeling . Make sure to pack your snorkeling gear when you visit this cenote. Both adults and children will have a blast, I guarantee!

Cenote Azul Diving

You can totally go scuba diving at Cenote Azul. The geographic formations and submerged trees make the sinkhole a fascinating setting for a dive . It’s a suitable dive for both beginner and advanced divers.

Are drones allowed?

Drones are NOT allowed in Cenote Azul . In fact, the use of drones is pretty restricted in Mexico, and most cenotes and areas of interest prohibit their use. You can, however, take pictures at the cenote.

Is there anything prohibited at the cenote?

To protect this natural location, there are some Cenote Azul rules you need to follow . They are the same in most cenotes, so the list will come handy for all your cenote visits. These are some of the things you’re not allowed to do.

• As I stated earlier, sunscreen and bug repellent are prohibited.
• Smoking is also vetted at the cenote.
• So is alcohol .
• You can take your snorkel gear and water shoes, but no fins are not allowed .
• This goes without saying, but absolutely no fishing ! Harassing or harming the animals or environment is also a big NO.

How long should you stay at the cenote?

You can spend the whole day at Cenote Azul if you want to, but most visits take around 2-3 hours . That’s plenty of time to snorkel, enjoy the fish spa, and have a snack by the water.

If you’re visiting other cenotes on the same day, that’s how much time you’ll likely spend in each.

HOW TO GET TO CENOTE AZUL

There are several options to get to El Cenote Azul from Playa del Carmen , Tulum , or Cancun if you prefer to visit on your own.

Drive a Rental Car

Driving your own rental car is one of the best ways to get to Cenote Azul from Playa del Carmen.

I always recommend renting a car if you plan on visiting a few attractions around Playa del Carmen, Cancun , or Tulum. It’s just easier to get around and you’ll end up saving a lot of time and money.

From Playa del Carmen, you need to take the 307 Highway southbound . Once you reach Puerto Aventuras, continue driving for four more minutes until you see the Barcelo Hotel Resort entrance .

Turn left and then right after that, and just look for the sign to tell you that you have reached the cenote. There’s an adequate number of parking spots available at Cenote Azul, so that won’t be a problem.

⌛ The driving time from Playa is 25 minutes , and around 30 minutes from Tulum . If you’re coming from Cancun , the drive will take you closer to 1.5 hours .

Take the Colectivo to Cenote Azul

One of the most popular options to get around in the Yucatan Peninsula (and the cheapest one) is via a colectivo, a public shared van . The colectivo from Playa del Carmen to Cenote Azul will cost you about 40-60 MXN (USD 2-4).

Head to 2 nd Street and find a colectivo headed south towards Tulum . Just tell the driver you are headed to Cenote Azul. The colectivo will stop right across the cenote, or in front of the Barcelo Hotel. It’s a short walk from there to the cenote entrance.

You can also take a colectivo from Tulum . Make sure you take one headed northbound towards Playa del Carmen and tell the driver “Cenote Azul” or “Barcelo”.

If you are visiting Cenote Azul from Cancun , you’ll have to take two colectivos ; one to Playa, and then another one toward Tulum.

Take a Taxi to Cenote Azul

Taking a taxi is more expensive , so make it your last resort when it comes to transportation options for Cenote Azul.

If you prefer convenience and budget is not an issue, you can easily take one from Playa (or any part of the state) to get to Cenote Azul. This is a popular cenote so your taxi driver will be able to easily recognize it.

From Playa del Carmen a taxi will cost about 700 MXN – slightly less or more, depending on the taxi driver.

You should also arrange for the driver to pick you up later , as it might be difficult to get a taxi from Cenote Azul when you’re there. It’s safer to secure your ride back ahead of time.

Hire a Driver for the Day

A very comfortable option is to hire a private driver . You’ll be picked up and dropped off at your hotel by a professional. Design your dream itinerary (plan a whole day out with visits to other attractions to make the most of it!) and let your driver take you there .

This is how I visited Cenote Azul ! Not through this company, but later I started using Cancun Airport Transportation services for multiple transfers in the Riviera Maya, and I’ve always had a fantastic experience , so I have no problem recommending it.

PROS AND CONS OF CENOTE AZUL (QUINTANA ROO)

Pros of cenote azul.

✅ It’s a very accessible cenote that’s close to the main highway.

✅ It’s located close to other cenotes so you can visit more than one during your trip.

✅ The cost of entry to this cenote is reasonable.

✅ It’s an open cenote with a large space. Even when it is popular, it is easy to find a quiet spot.

✅ It’s great for swimming, snorkeling, and diving.

✅ It’s a family-friendly cenote with shallow areas for your children to swim in.

Cons of Cenote Azul

❌ It can get very crowded on weekends. Make sure you visit mid-week.

❌ There are no major tourist facilities at this cenote if that’s what you are looking for. Except for a small snack bar, you won’t find any big touristy restaurants for example, or massage parlors like at Cenote Dos Ojos . You can bring food, but no alcohol is allowed near the cenote.

WHAT TO PACK FOR CENOTE AZUL

This is a list of the essential items you should bring with you when you visit Cenote Dos Ojos.

➤  Swimwear : This is the most important! You’ll spend most of your visit in the water, so your swimsuit is the single most essential item to pack.

➤  Snorkel Mask or Goggles : Snorkeling will likely be the highlight of your visit, so don’t forget your set. While you could rent a snorkel mask at Cenote Azul, it’s more convenient (and hygienic) to have your own snorkeling gear . Especially if you plan on snorkeling in various cenotes!

➤  Biodegradable Sunscreen : This is very important, both for your protection and the environment’s. Regular sunscreen is not allowed at Cenote Azul, as it can damage the ecosystem. To keep your skin from getting sunburned, use 100% biodegradable sunscreen when visiting all cenotes in Mexico.

➤  Water Bottle : Traveling with a refillable water bottle is such a great habit. It will reduce your consumption of plastic, and also save you money. Remember that tap water in Mexico isn’t safe to drink, so make sure to refill your bottle with drinking water. You can otherwise buy a  LifeStraw water bottle  that comes with a filter.

OTHER THINGS TO DO NEAR CENOTE AZUL

I’ve spent quite some time around this area, so here are a few ideas for things to do once you’ve visited Cenote Azul.

▶️ Visit other less-known  cenotes near Playa del Carmen  or Tulum. Two I really like that are rarely crowded are  Cenote Calavera  and  Cenote Nicte Ha .

▶️ Visit the beautiful  Tulum ruins  that are perched on the Caribbean Sea and offer some spectacular views.

▶️ Spend a day enjoying the  beach in Tulum , and check out some of  Tulum’s trendy cafes and restaurants .

▶️ Go on a day trip to  Cancun  or to the beautiful  Cozumel island .

CENOTE AZUL, PLAYA DEL CARMEN FAQs

Cenote Azul price is 150 pesos at the time of writing. The cost to get there will depend on which means of transportation you choose: a colectivo from Playa costs around 40 pesos, while taking a taxi could cost you as much as 700 pesos.

Cenote Azul is composed of various pools. It’s around 32 feet deep in its deepest area, where experienced divers usually head to, and it’s about waist-deep in the shallow pools.

Cenote Azul is 16 miles (26 km) south of Playa.

There are no crocodiles in Cenote Azul. If you want to meet a (completely harmless!) baby croc at a cenote, you should head to Cenote Carwash .

Thinking of cliff-jumping at Cenote Azul? It’s one of the greatest activities there! The jumping platform is about 15 feet above the water.

Cenote Azul is in the Yucatan Peninsula, south of Puerto Aventuras and near Tulum. It’s not to be confused with its namesake cenote in Bacalar! The distance Cenote Azul Tulum is 25 miles.

Blue Cenote ( Cenote azul )

Blue Cenote or Cenote Azul is one of the most popular cenotes in the Riviera Maya , Cancun and the Yucatan Peninsula.

Its location between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, its turquoise blue waters, the amount of shallow areas, being an open type cenote and its facilities, make it one of the must visit cenotes.

Attractions and activities at Cenote Azul

Just as you enter the cenote facilities you will find the first two pools , these have a shallow depth, are shaded and have fewer tourists, although the water may be colder.

Continuing on you can reach the main swimming area, a natural open-air pool that is divided into two areas: a deep area and a shallower area. This is the most popular pool in the cenote.

Cenote Azul is one of the largest in the Riviera Maya and allows for a wide range of water activities:

• Relax and have a good time. As simple as being in one of the shallower areas of the cenote, choose a spot and enjoy the water and have fun with your friends and family.
• Swimming. In the main area you can swim; if you are not a good swimmer you can rent a life jacket or stay in the shallower areas.
• Snorkeling. Use your own equipment or rent it and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the cenote and even better, enjoy swimming with fish of different types and sizes. It’s worth it.
• Dives. If you like adrenaline: In the deepest area of the cenote there is a natural platform from where you can jump into the water in your best diving position. The jump is approximately 4 meters high.
• Picnik. You are allowed to bring food and there is a small store inside. Alcoholic beverages are not allowed.
• Feed the fish. Inside the park you can buy fish food and watch as these little animals swirl around your feet.
• Visit more cenotes. Being so close to other cenotes, you can take a mini cenotes tour . Nearby cenotes include Cristalino, Kantunchi and Jardin del Eden.
• Scuba diving. It is possible to dive to the depths of the cenote in routes for beginners or advanced divers.
• Local wildlife spotting. In addition to the rich bottom of the cenote, also see and hear many local birds, iguanas and if you look for them, even bats in the small cave.

How to get to Cenote Azul?

By public transportation it is possible to get there using the collectivo between Playa del Carmen and Tulum and asking to get off at the Barcelo hotel or directly mentioning the name of the cenote. The cost of the collectivo is approximately $1.5 USD or $30 Mexican pesos.

It is feasible but a little more expensive to make the trip by taxi from Playa del Carmen or from Tulum. Prices vary by season but it is advisable to budget with more than one cab driver before taking the trip.

It is easy to get there by own or rented car and it is cost-effective if you are in a group of several people.

How much is the entrance fee to Cenote Azul?

The general admission fee is $120 Mexican pesos ($6 USD), $100 pesos for Quintana Roo residents and $80 pesos ($4 USD) for children 4 to 8 years old.

Cenote Azul: What you Need to Know

Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds (and tour buses)!

Cenote Azul is one of the most popular cenotes in Riviera Maya , Mexico due to its proximity to both Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is located in Riviera Maya, directly on the main road. Cenote Azul is known for it’s beautiful, bright turquoise color, with its name translating to “blue cenote”. The large turquoise pools are perfect for swimming and hang out in the sun. Plus, the water is crystal clear and super refreshing! Before we dive too deep into the nitty gritty details, I want to clarify that this cenote is not to be mistaken with Cenote Azul in Bacalar, although I’ve heard that that one is beautiful as well!  

Located just south of Puerto Aventuras, you can get to Cenote Azul from Playa del Carmen in approximately 20 minutes by car. If you are coming from Tulum Pueblo, you should expect to travel about 45 minutes. 

What are Cenotes?

The first question you probably have is what the heck are cenotes? If you’ve traveled to Mexico before, you’re probably familiar with cenotes at this point and can skip ahead to the next paragraph. If not, keep reading! Cenotes ( pronounced sei-now-tay) are sinkholes that were created by the ceiling of caves collapsing. This results in sinkholes that hold salt-free water, making them great areas of swimming, diving, and scoping out the wildlife. Seriously, these cenotes are some underground magic. The water in any of these cenotes tend to me quite cold, but often a refreshing break from Mexico’s heat. There are actually three different types of cenotes. There are covered cenotes , open air cenotes , and a mix of the two. Cenote Azul is an open air cenote, with a number of different pools to explore.

Cenotes are extremely popular in Yucatan, and throughout Riviera Maya. I think it would be impossible to visit the region with hearing about these water pools, and they are definitely something that should be on any Tulum itinerary .

The Yucatan peninsula is full of thousands of cenotes to explore, so you’ll want to narrow down your list of must-visit cenotes. Here are a few of my favorite cenotes near Tulum and Playa del Carmen:

• Gran Cenote – just 10 minutes from Tulum and the most “insta-famous” of the cenotes near Tulum
• Cenote Choo-Ha – located near Coba, this is a great cenote to combine with a day trip to the famous Mayan ruins
• Cenote Oxman – a bit further than the other cenotes, Cenote Oxman is located near Valladolid. However, if you have the time I absolutely recommend a visit to this magical spot

What To Expect at Cenote Azul

When you first arrive at Cenote Azul you’ll pass the ticket booth, were you can purchase your ticket and any rentals with cash – MXN pesos or US dollars. You’ll be instructed to head to the showers to rinse off before continuing on to the cenotes. You’ll then walk through a beautiful jungle area, passing two small cenotes on either side. While these aren’t as big for swimming, they are perfect for a quick photo and don’t get super crowded.

Cenote Azul is known for its large swimming area, which makes it possible to spend hours swimming under the sun. There are both deep and shallow areas where you can actually see the ground. Be careful though, as many of the rocks are covered in moss and can be quite slippery. You’ll find two platforms to jump from, including a cliff jumping spot of about 15 feet for the more adventurous type. I personally stuck with the platform, which was only a few feet from the water.

Best Cenotes near Tulum, Mexico

Cenote Azul is located right next to a number of other cenotes including Cenote Cristalino, Kantunchi and Jardin of Eden. You can easily combine a visit with these cenotes, but you’ll need to pay the entrance fee at each of these.

If you stand still in the water for a few moments, you may notice small nibbles around your feet. Nothing to be worried about! The fish are known to bite at any dead skin on your feet, a spa practice that is quite common in Asia. At one point there were around 15 fish nibbling at each of my feet! The small shop actually sells food specifically to feed to the fish, but I think they had quite the feast on my toes!

Cenote Azul Hours

It is open daily from 8:30AM-5:30PM. Since cenote Azul is a popular spot on many of the tours coming from Playa del Carmen and the resorts in Riviera Maya, I highly recommend arriving early to avoid the crowds. That said, it’s a large cenote so you should be able to find a quiet spot no matter the time of day. We arrived right at 8:30AM and there were already a couple of people there, so it’s possible they’ll even let you in before opening hours.

Cenote Azul: Things to Note

• As with any cenote, you are always required to shower off before entering. Doing so protects the cenote, both the water and ecosystem. Please refrain from putting on any sunscreen or bug spray until after you’ve finished swimming. 
• You’ll find lockers available if you would like to lock up your valuables.
• There is a small spot to grab soft drinks, water, or a snack on-site.
• There are a number of bathrooms throughout the cenote complex. 

How to Get to Cenote Azul? 

Located just on the main road of Carretera Federal, Cenote Azul is super easy to get to. 

If you are renting a car while in Mexico, driving to Cenote Azul is super easy. It is located on Carretera Federal, the main road between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. There is a large parking lot with free parking, so you shouldn’t have any issues if you arrive early.  Rental cars are a great way to get around Quintana Roo if you feel comfortable driving in Mexico.

By Taxi 

If you’re arriving at Cenote Azul by taxi, I recommend either arranging for your driver to wait, or to make sure sure that you have a phone number to call for a pickup. I have heard that later in the day there are often drivers sitting around waiting for pickups, however this was not the case when we visited, so best to be prepared. 

If you plan on having your driver wait for you while you swim and hang out, make sure to arrange a price ahead of time, and pay after you’ve completed your trip. 

Una Vida is a more luxury accommodation option in Tulum town that still offers great rates. Located in the town center, Una Vida has a large pool, minimalist decor, and a great location for exploring the city.

Prices start around $200 USD/night. I recommend booking in advance!

By Collectivo

Because Cenote Azul is located on the main road, you can arrive by colectivo. Colectivos are shared vans that drive back and forth along specific routes. In this case, you will be traveling along the route between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Rides typically cost between 20-40 MXN per person, and can be hailed down on the side of the road if there is space. Just let the driver know that you are going to Cenote Azul, and you will be dropped off right in front. While colectivos lack the comfort of a private taxi, they are a cheap and easy way to get from place to place. 

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Cenote Azul? 

Entry into cenote azul costs 150 MXN pesos for adults and 80 MXN pesos for children ages 4 to 8. Life jackets are not required at Cenote Azul, but you have the option of renting on at the front desk for 40 MXN pesos. You can also rent snorkel gear for an additional 70 MXN pesos.

Only cash is accepted, but you have the option to pay in US dollars as well. It is a relatively cheap activity that can easily be visited without a tour, so it is perfect for visiting Tulum on a Budget.

Exploring the enchanting Cenote Azul is a must for visitors to Tulum, Playa Del Carmen, and the Yucatan Peninsula. Here, we’ll offer some useful tips to help you make the most of your visit. Nestled in a verdant garden of tropical plants, it is one of the most stunning open cenotes in the region.

Tulum and the surrounding area are full of cenotes , water-filled sinkholes that naturally occur in limestone rock when an underground cave collapses in on itself and exposes the groundwater underneath.

There are over 6000 cenotes dotted around the Yucatan Peninsula and some of the best ones are located around Tulum and are quite popular with locals and tourists alike.

At Cenote Azul, you could spend the day at this breathtaking cenote and take in the beauty of its surroundings. Alternatively, you could combine the visit to this cenote with a visit to a nearby beach or another cenote, for instance, the neighboring Cenote Cristalino. Whichever option you choose, you will be rewarded with an unforgettable experience.

Where is Cenote Azul?

Cenote Azul is situated on the outskirts of Puerto Aventuras, not far from both Playa del Carmen and Tulum, only 25 kilometers (15 miles) and 40 kilometers (18 miles) away respectively. It is possible to make a day trip to this cenote from either of those locations or even from Cancun, although it would take a longer time to get there.

How to get to Cenote Azul?

The cheapest and easiest way to get to Cenote Azul is via a Colectivo (minivan) from either Tulum or Playa del Carmen. They can be taken from the main road in Tulum Centro or from between 10th and 15th av in Playa.

Request the driver to drop me off at Cenote Azul. It is not far from the entrance and requires minimal walking. The cost is usually around 50 pesos per person.

Our favourite way to travel around Tulum is by simply renting your own car , which can be found at the Cancun airport, or in any town along the Maya Riviera. Having your own mode of transport allows you to go at your own pace and see other cenotes and sites along the way!

Quick Tips & Advice for Cenote Azul

Entrance Fee:  150 pesos ($7 USD). You can rent a lifejacket for 40 pesos and snorkel equipment for 80 pesos.

Opening Hours:  8:30 am to 5 pm every day

This is one of the busiest cenotes in the area, so be sure to come earlier (around 8:30 am) to beat the crowds, and don’t come on weekends if possible.

Make sure to  bring mosquito spray, towels, and snorkeling gear . Remember NOT to use sunscreen or bug spray before entering the cenote, shower first if you do.

All About Cenote Azul

The Cenote Azul swimming area is comprised of two distinct pools, which are divided by a raised walkway. Guests can enjoy a refreshing swim in either pool, and the elevated path provides a convenient way to transition between the two.

The first one is a shallow pool which is great for relaxing and taking a leisurely dip and is particularly popular with families because older children can stand up in the water. The second pool is a bit deeper and has a low cliff jumping area which is great for snorkelling and swimming. You can easily move between both pools by swimming beneath the connecting walkway.

The shallow pool of the cenote is a great spot to chill and beat the heat as the water is slightly warmer than the deeper pool. It is also ideal for families with small children as it only goes up to 1 and a half metres in the centre, making it an ideal spot to lounge around in. There are plenty of rocks around the edges to sit on and relax.

Cenote Azul’s deeper pool has a cliff face that visitors can jump off of. The drop is almost 4 metres from the top to the water, which is approximately 6 metres deep. The activity was popular when we were there, and those who decided to take the plunge were greeted with cheers from onlookers.

Cenote Azul has a series of pathways that allow visitors to explore the area with ease. These trails provide access to the different parts of the cenote and let people move around the area with convenience.

What to do at Cenote Azul

The most popular thing to do at Cenote Azul, as with any cenote, is of course snorkelling. You can bring your own snorkel gear, or rent it for around 80 pesos.

The next best thing to do, if you’re up to the challenge, is go cliff jumping. It’s only around 3 and a half to 4 meters high, and the water is deep enough. It’s easy to get to the cliff top, simply walk to the side and up, or just follow the others going there. Do NOT dive into the water, it’s not deep enough.

Another great thing to do at Cenote Azul is to simply swim, relax and cool off. One thing you may notice is a bunch of little fish will start nibbling at your toes. Not to worry, they don’t actually bite, but are in fact cleaning your feet by eating all the microscopic organisms you carry with you. It’s a fun experience.
