Cool Cruiser

After many loyal years with Holland America, we are trying a 4 night Thanksgiving cruise on the Royal Princess this year. Our booking includes the information below. What in the heck does dining migrated to ocean mean?  I googled it and it looks like it has something to do with the medallion app but I am not making the connection in terminology.

Thanks in advance for the help.

If you download the medallian app on your phone, you will be able to make reservations for the time and dining room that you wish.  You can also pick table size and if you would like to share with others or dine with just your party.

This is the default descriptor/placeholder that the Princess GDS reservation system has since traditional dining was discontinued.

Princess now has “Dine My Way” aka Freestyle dining. No pre set times or allocated tables/dining companions. All open seating in all dining venues. Reservations are not required, but can be made via the Medallion Class app in advance of sailing if you wish, or even once onboard. When making reservations you can link friends traveling with you, choose which dining venue you prefer, the time, and whether you wish to have a table for just your party, or if you wish to share with others. Table #s are not assigned and you may have different waitstaff each evening. You “may” be able to arrange the same table/section/waitstaff once onboard but it is not guaranteed.

It also means if you want to do it online, there is a link on the summary page of your cruise on princess website. Click on the link and it takes you to the Ocean.com site where you will need to log in again there (username and PW the same as princess site) there you can enter everything you could on the app plus do DMW also.

In your special requests example you posted, a word was left off which would have made the Dinning Preferences requests more easy to under stand.  It should have read "Ocean Ready" which is the title of their Ap that ties to their medallion.

@Ready2go11  will not be able to make any dining reservations until they have made Final Payment on the cruise.  Only loyalty levels Platinum and Elite have early access to DineMyWay.

This still does not say what "dining migrated to Ocean" means.

Even if this is default wording, what is it supposed to mean?

With the Medallion app, Ocean is the part of it where you book your dining. So the area where you book dining times has been migrated to the Ocean part of the app.

No guarantee the Medallion app works since there are currently lots of issues with the app. If you use your Medallion app to make reservation for the time and dining room, and if it asks "Reserve for the same time each day?" and if you answer yes. Be careful even if it comes back with a confirmation because this particular feature of this app doesn't work. We recently used this feature to reserve a private table in the main dining room in our upcoming 10-day Alaska cruise. We picked out a time that was available and said "yes" to reserving the same time each day for our journey. To our shock a week later when we checked the daily calendar to confirm our dinner reservation, nothing was reserved except for the second day. So we called Princess and spoke to an expert in the Dine My Way about this problem. He said the app doesn't provide an error message or warning when it can't find availability for the entire journey. If it detects availability on one day only, it'll confirm instead of telling you no such time or place available for rest of the journey. So the rep had to manually reserve the dining time and place for us. Bottom line is DON'T trust this app. Double check your confirmation.

Not true. Our next cruise is 8 months out and I have had all my dining times and table types entered for all fifteen nights. We've only made a deposit on this cruise. This is only our second Princess cruise so we certainly are not Platinum or Elite status.

Also, we're changing times and restaurants each night and hoping to get a table in different locations in the rooms for variety. I was able to very easily make reservations for every venue and time we wanted.

It must be hit or miss. I made all of our dinner reservations over two weeks ago for our March 2023 cruise and all the reservations are still intact on the Dine My Way page of the app. However, for variety they aren't all for the same time and place, but rotating through the different restaurants and at different times depending on expected activities.

I can say two things.  I have suspected this may be the situation in some cases as I could not logically explain the fullness of regular DR reservations on a couple of our voyages long before FP Date.  The second thing is you are lucky - I think.

Perhaps there is a 3rd thing - and no offense - why is Princess opening up DMW to non-Platinum and non-Elites when the policy states otherwise and it is a specific benefit for those loyalty levels?

(I am assuming you are not in a Suite - and you wouldn't even need DMW if you were since you would be dining in Club Class and need no reservations other than Specialty Dining).

This is one of the major flaws in DMW:  NO, you cannot select a table size.  We used to be able to request a preferred table size when booking and it was stored in POLAR and we would see it in Cruise Personalizer.  As time went by, all sizes might not be shown there.

With DMW, all you can do is select SHARING or PRIVATE.  With SHARING, you have zero control over the table size and won't know it until you show up for dinner.  You will need to speak with the on-board DR mgmt to try and get the size you want.  A couple might like sharing at a 4-top, 6-top, 8-top, or 10-top.

With PRIVATE, the system is attempting to find a table to fit the size of your dining party.  If not found, it may come back with nothing available, or it may say you have to SPLIT the party up (say it was two couples).  This is completely dumb, but it is what they have done.

Where does the policy say only Platinum or Elite are allowed to reserve before final payment? The only reference I have found is in the Captain's Circle loyalty benefits chart where it says, and I quote: "early access to Dine My Way reservations". No where does it say that ONLY Platinum or Elite are allowed to book reservations early.

And I am in the cheapest mini-suite category, so no, not in a suite or even Club Class. And I don't think I am lucky. I think that the app works fine for most people.

Of course, you could just turn up at the MDR of your choice when you are hungry !

Okay, you have jogged my memory.  I can tell you that I had a series of emails with Princess (a CR contact) way back when DMW was first released.

You raise a good point from this perspective (Captain's Circle Benefits).  A question back then was would Princess open up DMW (and Arrival Groups) some days ahead of the rest of the folks so that we would have first access.  One example of this process is when new voyages are released for sale, Elites have a 1 day jump on everyone else.  So, would DMW open up some days prior for Elites and Platinum?

I do think the biggest question for this approach was for Arrival Groups and would Princess open those up earlier for Elites, then Platinums, etc?  (That has never happened to my knowledge).

The true approach to DMW is indicated on the Princess.com Dining page.

Go to this page on Princess.com:   https://www.princess.com/ships-and-experience/food-and-dining/dine-my-way/

Look down at the first section "Access Dine My Way".  Here you will read:

  • Most guests will be able to access once your cruise is paid in full.
  • Early access for Captain's Circle Platinum and Elite members as well as guests booked in Club Class and Suites.

The second bullet indicates that only Platinum and Elite members (plus anyone in Club Class or a Suite who is not already at those member levels) can access DMW once they have a booking.  All others are supposedly waiting until they have made Final Payment (which can be done anytime they want prior to the due date).

Certainly not everyone is getting early access to DMW,  You are some sort of exception situation and I cannot explain it.

I will just note again that no one in CC or a Suite needs to make a DR reservation.  In fact, a message pops up informing the guest they have CC dining as a reminder.  The only need for DMW for those folks is if they wish to book Specialty Dining.

And this is not the only situation where documentation for Captain's Circle Member benefits is vague and not spelled out.  They used to have other old and outdated info before the new set of benefits was released.

Bottom line is you got lucky and we have no idea how many others are in the same situation.

I guess that "Don't YOU Know Who I Am???" message I sent to every Princess email address imaginable worked well for me after all. LOL!

This all perfectly matches the inconsistencies that Princess seems to be known for. I will enjoy my lucky break and will savor every minute of my "priority booking" dining times.

Thanks for the friendly chat on this topic.

That's my experience as well.  I couldn't book any dining reservation on the app until after final payment.  When I tried to do it prior to final payment, the error message pops up saying we can only book it post final payment.

We are in the lowly Gold level and basic cabins so zero perks on our reservation.

As for discussion on selecting "private" table, it will depend on if you want to dine at the popular time or not as well as party size.

We are a party of 6 sailing in 3 weeks and if we opt for a popular time of 7 PM, the option is very limited as only can go to Allegro Dining Room:

image.thumb.jpeg.81d53188587f18fa08da33c305ffb6e5.jpeg

But if selecting the time slot 20 minutes earlier to beat the rush, one can have more options:

image.thumb.jpeg.1e7e7117aad2e2245fe63d9e4b157605.jpeg

Although one wonders why you would want to select the option to have your party split up when you can dine together?  Unless one is in the dog house with the spouse and she doesn't want to sit with you...

In case readers are not aware, as I was not when first I started making reservations, the only time that ever came up for me was 7:00pm. I soon figured out that this was just a suggestion and the times could be scrolled through at 20 minute intervals for a time more satisfactory. Just click on a time earlier or later and that time should scroll into the window. Keep doing that until your preferred time is selected. Then reserve it.

How to plan and personalize your dining on a Princess cruise

How to plan and personalize your dining on a Princess cruise

CRUISE TIPS: Princess Cruises unveiled Dine  My Way , another flexible MedallionClass enhancement that makes it easy for guests to pre-plan and tailor their dining experiences. It pairs with the revolutionary OceanNow   on demand service to offer onboard dining flexibility and convenience.

Sky Princess Main Dining Room

Dine  My Way  gives guests the freedom to make reservations in onboard dining rooms and specialty restaurants at times they prefer and with whom they wish to dine.

Sky Princess LeMer

Dine  My Way  also helps to optimize capacities in dining rooms and restaurants on board, manage wait times, and gives guests significantly more flexibility.

When making a reservation, guests will be able to:

  • add additional friends or family members with whom they are traveling
  • select their preferred pace of dining (relaxed, quick)
  • indicate their desired seating location (near window, close to entrance) in the Ocean profile
  • share dietary preferences and allergen information
  • pick the same venue and dining time each night

“We believe guests are going to love the control and customization Dine My Way offers,” said  Jan Swartz , Princess Cruises president. “Instead of restricting dining choices during the pandemic, we’ve been able to expand the options for our guests and thanks to the unique, innovative capabilities of the OceanMedallion, reduce wait times and eliminate the need to stand in line.”

In addition, Princess’ OceanNow on-demand menu has been expanded to include entrees and beverage options from restaurants through-out the ship with guest’s requests delivered directly to their location.

OceanNow orders can be made using the MedallionClass app on a smart device, via the stateroom TV, or by having a crew member place the order on the guest’s behalf.

OceanNow will also include many expanded personalization options so you can order your perfect coffee drink, select your favorite steak sauce toppings, or pizza condiments providing more customization than ever.

“Guests have always appreciated the convenience of OceanNow, and because the pandemic has expanded people’s use of ‘on-demand’ direct delivery services, we think even more guests will embrace the ability to order what they desire and have it delivered to them wherever they are on board,” notes Mario Siebaldi, Princess Cruises senior vice president of Guest Experience. “It not only prevents unnecessary queuing, more importantly it elevates the guest experience.”

Princess MedallionClass vacations are enabled by the award-winning OceanMedallion, a wearable device that pairs with IoT-driven innovation to significantly enhance and personalize the guest experience.

In addition to service on demand, Princess MedallionClass Vacations are also marked by touchless embarkation and disembarkation, frictionless commerce, and keyless stateroom entry. Additional contactless capabilities accessible using smart phones and tablets include way-finding; family and friends locator; and interactive fun.

Princess Cruises' Dine My Way – Highly Personalized & Flexible Dining

Princess’ OceanMedallion program already gives guests ultra-fast WiFi at sea, the ability to access staterooms, make onboard purchases, book excursions, and more, right from a smartphone.  While cruising has been paused, Princess Cruises certainly hasn’t stopped moving forward.  As part of the MedallionClass experience available on all Princess ships, guests can now use a mobile device (or other means) to arrange dining for their entire cruise, and flexibility is the name of the game.

From Princess:

Dine My Way is all about personalizing your cruise dining experience. Customize your dining time for each day, whether making reservations for the main dining room (which is included) or specialty restaurants (which charge a small cover charge). Have dinner at the same time each night or change it based on what works for you.* Once on board, you can order food and drinks for delivery wherever you are through OceanNow®. More options at your fingertips means less time waiting and more time to dine your way.

Ordering Food & Drinks with OceanNow

Whether you’re relaxing in a lounge, enjoying Princess’ famous Movies Under the Stars, or almost anywhere onboard, OceanNow lets you order food and drinks and have them delivered.  This means you don’t have to wait in line, or even get out of your chair if you want a snack, or can’t take your eyes off the sunset.

Dine When, How and Where You Like

When you want.

Dining when you want can mean choosing the same options for your whole cruise, doing something special one night, or establishing and changing reservations whenever you’d like.  We love flexibility when on vacation.

Select dining times for main dining rooms and specialty restaurants.

Change reservations as needed. (It's flexible!)

Request the same time each night and even the same waitstaff.

No reservations needed for those eligible for  Club Class Dining .

How You Want

Cruise lines have long been great about ensuring guests get what they want – but with Dine My Way you won’t need to rush to the host-stand on embarkation day (still one of our top embarkation day tips ) to request the table location you want, and you can be assured that the staff at all dining venues is aware of your dietary preferences in advance.

Customize your food and drink orders.

Share any dietary preferences.

Request your table location.

Choose your dining pace.

With Whom You Want

Maybe you’re traveling with old friends, or you’ve just met new ones onboard – or maybe you’re looking for a special night away from the rest of the family.  Dine My Way means you can make and adjust reservations for anyone in your party – just like you can already do for other events and shore excursions .

Let us know who's in your travel party.

Easily make and edit reservations that include members from this group.

Where You Want

Dine Your Way doesn’t just mean arranging meals at the main dining room, but at specialty restaurants, casual venues, and even from wherever you might be relaxing onboard.

Take your pick of a variety of eateries and dining options, including regional cuisine.

Let your tastes and mood decide, anything from a celebratory multi-course meal at an award-winning specialty restaurant to the best pizza at sea. (Choosing's the only hard part!)

Don't get up! Order food and drinks delivered wherever you are with OceanNow®.

Other OceanMedallion Features

For guests, this new program adds to what is already a great suite of options available in the smartphone app, as well as on large touch-displays throughout the ship.  Guests sailing on MedallionClass ships (which as of late 2020, is ALL of them) can also look forward to the below features (and many more):

Scheduling debarkation times to avoid long lines

Reserving seating for shows

Booking onboard and shore side experiences

Setting and adjusting other guest preferences

Unlocking staterooms

Billy’s Take

While most cruise lines have worked hard to increase connectivity and give guests access to apps and mobile sites for certain parts of their experience, Princess Cruises’ OceanMedallion program seems to really focus on giving guests more options, and not just enhancing already available experiences.  Sure, dining reservations could always be made, but constant reservations adjustments required a shipboard phone or visiting a restaurant, often at specific times.  Food delivery to wherever you are?  That’s an option we’ve seen Carnival offer for pizza, but little more.  Specifying the pace of your meal service?  Linking reservations?  These were off-menu requests before Dine My Way.

Princess Cruises continues to enhance it's OceanMedallion program at a time when the minimization of crowds is more important than ever.  Such improvement to the guest experience help differentiate them from many cruiselines who tout their tech.

Princess Cruises revolutionizes main dining with 3 unique options

CruiseMapper logo

Princess Cruises has unveiled a significant enhancement to its main dining options across its fleet, aimed at providing guests with increased flexibility and choice in their dining experiences. This enhancement introduces 3 distinct table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime – complemented by the brand's exclusive OceanNow location-based service.

In an effort to cater to individual preferences and offer personalized service, Princess will allocate separate dining rooms on each ship for the three table service options. One dining room will be dedicated to traditional dining, offering both early and late seating every evening. Another will provide reservable dining times, while a third will offer open seating to accommodate walk-ins anytime. These options seamlessly integrate with Princess's OceanNow service, allowing guests to order anything, anytime, and have it delivered anywhere onboard.

The decision to make all dining formats available fleetwide follows the success of this approach already implemented aboard the new Sun Princess . The ship introduced a 3-story dining room, with each floor dedicated to a different dining option.

Beginning April 15, 2024, the new dining approach will launch on Princess voyages departing September 14, 2024, and beyond. To facilitate the transition, main dining reservations made for voyages sailing on or after September 14, except for Sun Princess, will be canceled. Existing reservations for voyages through September 13 will remain unaffected.

Starting June 17th, guests with bookings will have the option to use the app before their voyage to select between traditional seating in a dedicated dining room, where they will have the same waiter, table, and time each night, or flexible dining in either the Reservable or Open Seating dining rooms.

These changes do not impact guests booked in specialty dining restaurants or those in suite or reserve collection accommodations, as they already have access to dedicated dining rooms where reservations are not required.

How to use Dine My Way on Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises has introduced Dine My Way , a flexible MedallionClass enhancement that enables you to tailor your dining experiences.

What is Dine My Way?

Dine My Way is the dining reservation service for Princess Cruises. Using OceanNow on the MedallionClass app, you can pre-book dining in any restaurant on board your cruise ship. You can use Dine My Way for reservations in the Main Dining Room or specialty restaurants such the Crown Grill .

Princess Cruises Crown Grill

How does Dine My Way work?

Dine My Way monitors the capacities in dining rooms and restaurants on board, manages wait times, and gives you the opportunity to customise your dining experience.

You can make dining reservations using the MedallionClass smartphone app or your stateroom TV. With the app you can make your reservations up to 60 days before your cruise. The MedallionClass app is free to download from Android and Apple app stores.

You can choose to reserve dining at the same time each day or a variety of times depending on your cruise itinerary. This should reduce waiting times that had previously been experienced by passengers who’d opted for Anytime Dining.

When making a dining reservation with Dine My Way, you will be able to:

  • Add additional friends or family members with whom you are travelling with (subject to Covid guidelines)
  • Choose your preferred pace of dining (relaxed or quick)
  • Indicate your desired seating location (near window, close to entrance, etc.) in the Ocean profile
  • Share dietary preferences and allergen information
  • Pick the same venue and dining time each night

The more information you provide, the more personalised your reservation. You may want to dine before a show in the Theatre and opt for a quick service, with a window view with members of your family.

Dine My Way on Princess Cruises

Things to consider when using Dine My Way

Availability will play a part in whether all of your preferences can be accommodated. For example, there will only be a certain number of tables next to a window at a particular time. To give you the widest range of options, advanced reservations are recommended.

One drawback of reserving your dining in advance will be the limited spontaneity that many people enjoy on a cruise. The Coronavirus pandemic has meant that this was always going to be the case when cruising restarted. By introducing Dine My Way, Princess Cruises can manage the number of passengers dining in each restaurant and identify quieter venues. It will initially help with minimising queues and interactions.

“We believe guests are going to love the control and customisation Dine My Way offers. Instead of restricting dining choices during the pandemic, we’ve been able to expand the options for our guests and thanks to the unique, innovative capabilities of the OceanMedallion, reduce wait times and eliminate the need to stand in line.” Jan Swartz, Princess Cruises president

If you wait until you’re on board to book your dining, you will have the opportunity to see which restaurants are less busy. It’s likely that peak times will not be as easy to reserve. If you’re flexible and don’t mind when you eat, this is a good option.

It would be useful for Princess Cruises to announce when formal nights will take place in advance to help you plan your evenings.

Features of OceanNow

In addition to Dine My Way, OceanNow has an on demand menu that can be ordered and delivered to you, wherever you are on the ship. The menu has been expanded to include entrees and beverage options from restaurants throughout the ship.

Dine My Way is available within OceanNow

OceanNow allows you to order your favourite coffee, select steak sauce toppings and choose pizza condiments. This provides more customisation than ever before.

If you want a glass of champagne from a fresh bottle, you can even choose that!

OceanNow orders can be made using the MedallionClass app, stateroom TV, or with a crew member placing the order for you. Your order is sent to the closest crew member to fulfill and deliver it to you. If you decide to move location after placing your order, the OceanMedallion technology will ensure your food and drinks order still finds you.

Final thoughts on Dine My Way

The OceanMedallion technology has given Princess Cruises a head’s start in managing the safe return of cruising. I’m very impressed with the power to personalise dining preferences. I think there will be a greater need to plan dining ahead of a cruise using Dine My Way, especially when cruising resumes.

Being able to decide when and where I eat with minimal pre-planning has always been welcomed but Dine My Way may mean adapting to changes. The on demand menu is a positive enhancement and I’m confident the OceanNow feature will be a hit with cruisers.

Princess Cruises' new Dine My Way enables passengers to make dining reservations in any restaurant. Find out how it works.

NEW Princess “Casual Dining” Menus

by Prof. Cruise · Published August 3, 2023 · Updated August 3, 2023

A bunch of Princess casual dining menus with text that reads: Princess's NEW "Casual Dining" MENUS.

Introduction

In July 2023, Princess announced some major (and overwhelmingly unpopular, if the barrage of angry messages I’ve received via my website and social media channels is any indication) changes to the fleet’s dining options as well as to what’s included in “Princess Standard,” “Princess Plus,” and “Princess Premier.” You can read more detail about all the changes HERE . For this post, let’s talk specifically about the new “casual dining” concept on Princess and take a look at the new menus and pricing options.

What is “Casual Dining” on Princess?

Beginning on a rolling basis on August 2, 2023, guests with “Princess Plus” and “Princess Premier” packages will have new prix fixe casual meal options in their ship’s casual dining restaurants included for no extra charge. Those with “Plus” will receive two included “casual dining” meals per sailing and those with “Premier” will receive unlimited “casual dining” meals. Those guests with “Princess Standard” will pay $14.99 for the prix fixe “casual dining” meals or à la carte prices. “Plus” guests will also pay $14.99 or à la carte prices after their first two meals. Restaurants serving the new “casual dining” meals include: Alfredo’s, GiGi’s, Kai Sushi, Ocean Terrace, O’Malleys, Planks, Salty Dog Pub, Steamers, and Vines.

Alfredo’s and GiGi’s pizza restaurants are no longer included at no extra charge for “Princess Standard” guests

One of the most upsetting changes for many who normally book “Princess Standard” is that Princess’s wildly popular sit-down pizza restaurants (called “Alfredo’s” on some ships and “Gigi’s” on others) will no longer be included at no extra charge. “Princess Plus” guests will also pay to eat at Alfredo’s/Gigi’s after their first two included “causal dining” meals.

What dining options remain complimentary for all guests on Princess?

All guests, regardless of package purchased, can still dine at the buffet, International Cafe, poolside pizza stand and grill, and main dining rooms at no extra cost (with the exception of some “upcharge” items).

Princess’s New Casual Dining Menus

Here are the new casual dining menus. I have noted which specific ships these menus will be available on and what’s included in the $14.99 “prix fixe” option (complimentary for “Plus” guests for their first two “casual dining” meals and always complimentary for “Premier” guests). Kids under 12 can order from the casual dining menus for 50% off.

The only thing I’m mad about it the sapphire having a limited Alfredo menu! Like why?? The one pizza I wanted is excluded.

' src=

Interesting just how Princess, and other cruises companies mention how special their guests are to them, well that’s a total load of rubbish! Their PR and their various company departments have ensured that most guests come off the worst. Like Princess, most other cruise companies are rapidly turning cruising into an Elitist form of travel as they are producing the “haves and have nots” type of guest.

' src=

What, you just expect everything for free. How selfish. They are in the business of making money while providing excellent service. I have sailed with many companies and Princess is my favorite. Always the nicest employees around. Damn, suck it up or just sail basic.

' src=

I loved having a sit down pizza at Alfredo’s on Sky Princess but as a Standard passenger, that is no longer free. Not sure I will pay $12 for one given that I can go get multiple slices by the pool for free!

' src=

I agree with regard to the price. But for me, the Lido deck pizza doesn’t even come remotely close to Alfredo’s pizza!

' src=

Places like Salty Dog and Steamers were closed on Enchanted Princess just a few weeks ago. When these new prices and options go into effect in a few weeks, will they reopen?

' src=

Not real impressed with the offerings. Not into sushi, Streamers doesn’t do much for me, Planks, might give it a try, (will be interesting since Planks & Streamers are both at back of buffet on how they divide it, hope they have a lot more servers to over these areas as Caribbean was short staffed in July), Gastro Pub ate in there maybe a year ago & very tasty, was not impressed on the Royal when we ate at Alfredo’s, better at Slices. Just another come on, as elite, we’ve lost free wi-fi, the nice little amenities we used to get in our cabin, nobody gets chocolate on their pillow at night, selectional for our mini bar set-up is limited on type of liquor available. Since Covid we have done the + package on 6 cruises however, I have yet to have a specialty dessert, go to a fitness class or even come close to 15 drinks a day. I liked the speciality coffees (all other coffee is terrible, even the MDR), bottled water, wine if they had the one I liked. One time they have it next time they don’t. Now without a package you pay to ship your medallion, pay to activate Ocean Now(good luck, I always have a problem with it so just get up & go get what I want) & pay for room service. Used it twice in July because hubby was sick. Wish I knew policy, if I tip my cabin steward in cash, does he have to share? If I have a good waiter in MDR will tip him or her at end of cruise. Enough said!

' src=

Can you explain what you get with the old Plus package (before 3rd Aug) We paid for that one when we booked last year but now we aren’t sure what we can have

' src=

Sorry but I have had an email today from princess. We have been booked on the original plus package for ages and if we want the new extras on the new plus package we have to pay the £10 a day difference from 40 to 50 a day. For our 12 day cruise that’s another £240 to find if we want the 2 pizza meals fitness classes room service and other new extras. Con!!!

+ beverage package, 2 premium desserts per day, medallionnet 1-Device Wifi, crew appreciation, 2 fitness classes. It already included Ocean Now delivery service, didn’t pay for room service & my understanding anybody can have green lane embarkation if you have your medallion & have completed all info. We’ve been basically that since we went back to cruising. To me it seems they just added 2casual dining. Hope this answers your question.

You have to pay the difference between the old and new plus package else you stick with the original benefits, Wi-Fi, tips & std drinks.

' src=

I don’t like to be “nickel and dimed”. For goodness sake, Princess, just raise your prices and give us the choices. I continue to see Crown Grill and Sabatini as legitimate add-ones but for heaven sake cut out the so-called ‘casual dining’ fees.

' src=

Many, many, MANY people agree with you!

' src=

I’m one of them! I’d rather just pay up front an extra $50/pp and have stuff like pizza be free.

' src=

Hi: John Padgett, President Princess maybe a great I.T. guy but it is obvious he has no experience in the “hospitality” business! The “casual” dining changes are just a thorn in the side of frequent, loyal guests ,who hate this nickel and dime experiment in how to piss off good customers. I was Corp. V.P. in perhaps the worlds best know hotel company and one rule is never change the terms of a booking after it has been paid for and never do anything that might upset the loyal frequent guest, they are your bread and butter. So by making this simple change he has managed to break both rules, time to get somebody at the top who really understands the hospitality business before we all cancel.

' src=

You don’t get everything for free in life. Pay for the plus package, get most drinks free, free WI FI, and the new charges in the semi specialist restaurants, etc. Otherwise pay a standard fare and choose how to spend what you save, on what you want. We hear daily that food prices have gone up dramatically, Princess are not immune from those rises. Try eating out in a decent restaurant near home, I think you will find it a lot cheaper and probably much better quality on your cruise.

' src=

Thanks for the information. I am a Princess Elite cruiser. I was unable to find information about the casual restaurants on the website. I agree with the other comments. Standard, Plus and Premier seem like a way to nickel and dime customers. Disturbed that room service is no longer complimentary. In any event, now that I see what is included on the casual dining menus, I think I will stick with standard and pay if I decide to go to one of the casual restaurants. Thanks again for the information. I really appreciate it.

' src=

Does not feel like I’m on a cruise. More like in my Atlanta area neighborhood. Not a vacation. My first Princess cruise in 20 years is coming up. Could be my last with all this petty upcharges.

' src=

Stop the whining. There are still plenty of places where you can have free “casual dining”. Intl. Cafe, Buffet, Grill and pizza by the pool etc. and of course the MDR’s. What’s all the fuss about Alfredo’s? The pizza was never that great there anyway – its basically junk food. if you really want pizza go up to the pool deck and grab a slice for free. Get the plus fare – it includes so much now and you only need to have 3 or 4 alcoholic drinks per day to break even based the cost of the individual included items. if you want to be nickel and dimed, go for the Standard fare and pay as you go for all the extras you want – you’ll probably end up paying more than the plus fare when all is said and done!

Thank you Prof. Cruise for putting together this excellent information. It brings a lot of clarity to a topic that so many people get really confused about.

' src=

Thank you for this menu compilation. This is the most comprehensive listing of menus that I have found on the web and it really really helps!

' src=

Two casual dining meals “per sailing?” Regardless of whether the cruise is a week, two weeks, or a month? This is a serious question as we’re looking at a month-long cruise. I can’t find anything on the Princess website or press releases that says anything other than two per cruise.

' src=

My 61st cruise is coming up (18th Princess) and your list is good to know because things are changing ever so often. As of the past 3 years I have often wondered how the cruise lines can afford the price of meat and food and still maintain the quality and quantity. I would rather have everything paid for before I go and not have to ruin my cruise watching the daily accounting of my bill. It is much more relaxing that way. It is getting a little crazy with the three catagories and what is attached to each one. On my last cruise the deluxe dessert was suppose to be included in my plus fare, but no one on the ship realized it and we never got the special dessert (no big miss). I will still go to Alfredo’s because the pizza is better because you can order it the way you want it.

Princess Cruises has announced a new program designed to help passengers pre-plan their dining experiences, called Dine My Way.

Dine My Way will allow passengers to make reservations in onboard dining rooms and specialty restaurants in a more streamlined way, and also help restaurants manage wait times and optimize capacity.

sky princess cruise ship exterior

When making a reservation through Dine My Way, which pairs with the line’s OceanNow on-demand service, guests will be able to do the following:

  • Add additional friends or family members that they are traveling with
  • Select their preferred pace of dining (relaxed, quick)
  • Indicate their desired seating location (near the window, close to the entrance) in the Ocean profile
  • Share dietary preferences and allergen information
  • Pick the same venue and dining time each night

“We believe guests are going to love the control and customization Dine My Way offers,” said Jan Swartz, president of Princess Cruises. “Instead of restricting dining choices during the pandemic, we’ve been able to expand the options for our guests and thanks to the unique, innovative capabilities of the OceanMedallion, reduce wait times and eliminate the need to stand in line.”

Princess’ OceanNow on-demand menu has also been expanded to include entrees and beverage options from restaurants throughout the ship — with requests being delivered directly to the passenger’s location.

OceanNow orders can be made using the MedallionClass app on a smartphone, via the stateroom TV, or by having a crew member place the order on the guest’s behalf.

OceanNow will include many expanded personalization options as well, so that passengers can order their favorite coffee drink, choose their favorite steak sauces, or pick the condiments they want with their sandwiches or pizza.

Princess’ MedallionClass ships are enabled by the OceanMedallion, a wearable device that allows guests the capability to do things such as unlock their stateroom door, initiate contactless payment, locate family and friends, and interact with various elements around the ship.

Princess cruise dining FAQ

princess cruise dining migrated to ocean

Is food on Princess Cruises included?

Sit-down meals in the main dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, are always included on a Princess cruise, and the menu varies somewhat daily. Also included is a buffet, either called World Fresh Marketplace or Horizon Court, depending on the ship, as well as fast casual and grab-and-go spots on board that serve pizza, tacos, burgers, pastries and ice cream.

Specialty restaurants including Crown Grill, Princess's steak and seafood house, and Sabatini's, the signature Italian restaurant, require a surcharge that's priced at a flat rate per adult or child; some menu items also require an additional surcharge no matter the age of the guest.

Are drinks included on Princess cruise ships?

Select beverages are always included: iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk, fruit juice, lemonade and tap water. Everything else, including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails, spirits and specialty coffees, must either be purchased a la carte or through one of the cruise line's beverage packages .

Do I need reservations?

Reservations are encouraged for the main dining room and the specialty restaurants, and it's best to make them as early as possible ; walk-in parties will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Guests can make reservations via the Princess MedallionClass app or at guest services once you're on board. If you wish to eat at the same time every night, you can do so by reserving your tables in advance.

Platinum and Elite Captain's Circle members have early access to reservations. Passengers booked in a Full Suite or Reserve Collection Mini-Suite don't need to make dining reservations as they will always be accommodated; they also have access to a dedicated space in the main dining room with expedited seating and an expanded menu.

Does Princess Cruises have an evening dress code?

"Smart casual" attire will be appropriate for the main dining room, buffet and fast-casual restaurants. You might want to pack something dressier for the specialty restaurants or one of the more upscale dining experiences like Chef's Table, 360 or a winemaker dinner.

On sailings that are five nights or longer, there will be one or more formal nights, which do require adhering to a dress code in the dining venues . Cocktail dresses, evening gowns or dressy pantsuits are appropriate for women, while dark suits, tuxedos or dinner jackets and slacks are required for men , along with dressy footwear. If you don't want to dress up or forgot appropriate attire, you're welcome to dine at the buffet or any of the other casual dining options on board during formal night.

Is there assigned seating in the main dining room?

There is currently no assigned seating at any dining venues on board Princess ships; however, that is changing for cruises departing on or after September 14. For those sailings, guests can choose between traditional seating (with assigned dining times, tables, tablemates and waiters in the main dining room) or flexible seating. Within flexible seating, passengers can either make reservations to dine at a specific time on any given night or walk in when they're hungry to access the first available table.

Until September, Princess will not offer assigned seating, and guests can choose to make reservations or not for the main dining room. If you are a solo diner or part of a couple or small group, your host might ask if you would like to sit with another party of a similar size in the main dining room; the choice is up to you.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

You can use the Cruise Personalizer to indicate your dietary preferences, including requests for low-sodium, low-fat, low-sugar and vegetarian diets. Kosher meals and baby food are available with advanced written requests. If you have allergies or medical needs related to food, you must inform Princess in writing — check the line's website for more details. Princess Cruises also recently introduced a series of vegan menus for dinner in the main dining room, including starters, soups, salads, pastas and main dishes.

Where can I get snacks on board?

princess cruise dining migrated to ocean

You'll find lots of spots to grab a quick bite, dessert or coffee, including Coffee & Cones, Patisserie, Swirls Ice Cream Bar, The Pastry Shop, International Cafe and Gelateria — options vary depending on the ship. Food at these venues is included, but there is a charge for specialty coffees and teas unless you have a beverage package.

Is room service included on Princess Cruises?

Guests can use the designated button on their cabin's phone to order room service 24 hours a day; each order incurs a $5 delivery fee, which is waived for those with Princess Plus or Princess Premier status.

You can also use the OceanNow feature in the Princess Medallion Class app to order food to be delivered to your cabin or anywhere else on the ship, like the pool deck. This feature is included with Princess Plus and Princess Premium; otherwise, there is a one-time access fee of $14.99 per person per voyage and a $5 delivery fee per order. Food and beverage surcharges may apply for some items ordered via room service.

A Princess Cruise ship sailing through Skagway, Alaska

As much as I love cruises for various reasons like convenience and ease, eating really well while sailing the high seas is sadly the exception, not the norm. So as someone who routinely travels with good food in mind, I made it my mission to figure out how to make the most of the dining outlets aboard my latest adventure, a Royal Princess Cruise Ship traversing from Seattle to Alaska and back on the 7-Day Inside Passage (with Glacier Bay National Park).

Guest being served fish from a "Cook My Catch" excursion on a Princess Cruise to Alaska

As with all Princess cruises, there are complimentary options included in your fare, like a standard all-day buffet, three main dining rooms—which serve up local seafood such as Chinook (King) salmon and wild Alaska cod from Princess’ Wild for Alaska Seafood initiative —and casual bites like pastries, pizza by the slice, burgers and hot dogs, and soft serve ice cream. But if you’re sailing for more than a few days, you really should spring for a Plus Beverage Package—especially if you drink alcohol and bottled sparkling water—and try as much as of the specialty dining as possible. That’s where Princess’ culinary flair really shines; plus, the additional fees are more than reasonable.

Princess Cruises is now offering a special five-course Winemaker’s Dinner priced at $140 per person ... [+] in partnership with Napa Valley’s celebrated Caymus Vineyards at Crown Grill.

Restaurants charging extra vary from ship to ship, and Royal Princess had two for dinner: Crown Grill and Sabatini’s. Both require a $35 cover charge per guest, and offer a three-course meal of a starter, main course, and dessert. Though Crown Grill bills itself as a steakhouse, there are ample seafood and vegetarian options. (The chili-marinated jumbo prawns accompanied by onion fried rice and Black and Blue Onion Soup spiked with Jack Daniels and Roquefort were especially well-prepared.) And earlier this year, Princess started offering a special five-course Winemaker’s Dinner priced at $140 per person in partnership with Napa Valley’s celebrated Caymus Vineyards, who’s also curating a new wine menu with suggested pairings.

Sabatini's is a specialty dining restaurant on Princess Cruises that serves classic Italian fare for ... [+] dinner in the evenings, and the "suite breakfast" in the mornings.

However, I gravitated more towards Sabatini’s and its classic Italian fare of melty arancini, toothsome spaghetti smothered with rich San Marzano marinara (one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in recent memory), and fork-tender branzino. If you’re booked in one of the ship’s suites, you’ll also receive a “suite breakfast” daily here. Easily one of the best perks, it’s a far more civilized way to start the day—imagine Champagne mimosas (“breakfast juice” as the staff say), mini pastries, and fluffy made-to-order omelets—than pushing through crowds at the buffet.

Alfredo's Pizzeria on the Royal Princess offers the best pizza at sea.

Other culinary experiences worth the cost include Ocean Terrace, a sushi bar situated in the atrium. For a $14.99 cover charge, you can dig into an appetizer, your choice of one order of nigiri or sashimi, and two rolls. Standouts include the thick, buttery slabs of hamachi sashimi and aburi spicy tuna layered with gently-torched spicy tuna and assorted sauces.

But the one spot that I still think about is Alfredo's Pizzeria , which costs the same as Ocean Terrace. People have claimed it makes the best pizza at sea, and I have to agree: it’s solid. As someone who eats pizza at least once a week, I couldn’t believe the quality turned out this open-kitchen restaurant. The pies were thin, crispy, and balanced, and I would have enjoyed them on land—let alone at sea where there are far more challenges and restrictions in the kitchen. The minestrone soup, calzones, and tiramisu were topnotch, too.

While I’m not a veteran cruiser by any means, I’ve taken enough to get a sense how to make the most of the experience. In short: if you treat them like any other trip on land, keep an open mind, and can be flexible with your budget—you can have a vacation that’s equally enriching, relaxing, and delicious, too.

Dining: How does "open seating" work on Princess?

We use traditional early dining whenever possible. We have some cruise line the flexible dining worked well because we could make reservations well in advance of our sailing date; or at least a day or so in advance. On other cruise lines I've found that is sometimes not possible until that day,  and then trying to get something "early" is nearly impossible. At one time with Princess' flexible hours, we could not get reservations before 2000....but that was many cruises ago.

So how's it work now on Princess? Can be request a table for two, at say 1730-1830? And it so, when can we do that?

Thanks for your recent experience.

We always eat early and still I make the reservations for 5 PM in the app.

Saying that they still make you wait on line as if you just arrived without any reservations.

I suppose we'll just have to contact the head waiter to secure the same table & time each night like we use to.

Westsail32

I had always used open dining until my cruise last month. With Covid I decided I wanted a solo table.  Last cruise I picked a set time traditional dining which I’d never done before.  The first night I approached the manager to ask I’d I could have the same table every night.  It was GREAT.  Same servers, same staff, being greated by name, being able to just walk to my table without problem.  I loved it.  I’m never going back to open dining.

There is no “traditional” dining on Princess. It sounds like you made arrangements on board. This may not be possible on all cruises

Pam in CA

I’ve taken five cruises in the past year.

On all of them, I selected a time, dining room and pro care table for two and reserved it for the whole cruise.

On the Grand, we asked and were given the same table and waitstaff every night. We were able to modify our dining times some nights and still got the same table and waitstaff.

On the Majestic, we asked and were told absolutely not. We could not have the same table or waitstaff. We couldn’t even have the same section. The Head Waiter was pretty rude about it.

Recently disembarked the Sapphire on a 10-day cruise and had the same experience as the Grand: same table and waitstaff every night, even when we changed our dining time some nights.

I still prefer Traditional dining but at least on three cruises, we were able to replicate it. Not so on two Majestic cruises.

Thanks

Before my recent Sapphire Princess cruise, I used “dine my way“ on the app to make dinner reservations for every night. We showed up for dinner every night in accordance with the reservations we had made, and were in every case seated in less than five minutes. It worked very well.

Sapphire has five different main dining rooms, and I wanted to try each one, so it never occurred to me to request the same table and staff each night.

That's what we do. Instead of the same table and waiters every night, we prefer to try all the dining rooms and different locations in each, and to meet more of the great dining staff. We prefer variety so that each dining is a new adventure rather than repeating the same experience over and over and over again.

They serve the same food in every dining room, so I guess the variety you are looking for is decor?

Decor, staff and dining neighbors, I would guess.

It's early for most people but works for us Florida folks. You would be surprised at the number of people lined up to eat at that time.

The line starts at 5 PM and by 6 PM is packed. I hate fighting the crowds so we arrive a little early & take our time eating.

Wasn't there a similar discussion recently,  when many Floridians responded by saying that early diners are in the minority ?

Roger that, thanks. I did see info on that at Princess.com yesterday. I'll have to probably re-download the Medallion app as the last time we had it was for a cancelled Feb 2021 cruise, and before that, for a Nov 2019 cruise we took.

When did you make your reservations? That day? Day before? A long time before? Just curious.....I need to download the app and try to make reservations, but our cruise is not until March 2023 so I'm pretty sure I'm far, far to early. Maybe have the final payment?

By "Traditional" I mean picking a set time each night in the dining room.  You can select your dining time and table size options prior to the cruise in the app.

The term "Traditional Dining" is the same as described in this cruise critic article.

Not only dining room decor, but different perspectives on that decor, plus the benefit of seeing new faces and interacting with more of the staff. Seeing the same dining room from different locations provides an interesting and satisfying aspect to dining - the views are unique from every location. We get bored going to the same table in the same location with the same people surrounding us, every night, night after night, especially on longer cruises. And this is especially pronounced when that table is in a bad location.

On our last Grand Princess cruise we sat at a table for eight with four other people in Da Vinci. That table was located in a corner of the room. It became a race to be the first ones there to grab the best seats, the ones where the view wasn't two blank walls. The other four people were always at the front of the line when the doors opened, so we would end up with the bad seats every time. We eventually asked to be moved, and we did end up at a better location. For the rest of the cruise, the people at that first table would scowl at us anytime we crossed paths, probably because they thought that we didn't like them and were insulted.  😀

Not if you MUST be in bed before 9PM.  😉

I cannot even imagine eating dinner before 7:30 even at home

Different times for different folks.  If I waited till 7:30 I would be starved.  In our house, dinner is by six.

Sometimes when we at home, we eat by 3:30 PM and our preferred dinner time is actually by 4:30 PM.  On cruises, we like to make our reservations for 6:00 - 6:20 PM.  That gives us plenty of time to head up to the PES event prior to dinner and to get to the 8:30 PM shows/activities after dinner.

6 hours ago, wowzz said: Wasn't there a similar discussion recently,  when many Floridians responded by saying that early diners are in the minority ?

Yes there was, and lots of Fl. folks don't mind eating later.

I've never surveyed the people standing in line a 4:45 PM but there are lots of them. Probably not from the UK though.  😄
