So what is a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe? In some ways you could say that all capsule wardrobes whether for travel or not are a minimalist way of buying and wearing clothes.

Any capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several cute mix and match outfits. It basically means that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits. And it is a great way to make sure that you pack light do not overpack for your travels.

A minimalist travel capsule wardrobe takes these a little more extreme and has 10 or less basic wardrobe items that can make multiple different outfits.

Depending on the length of our travels and the destination we also use other packing techniques to create our capsule wardrobes such as:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method).

However this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe aims to have a few key pieces that can be used wherever you are traveling for whatever season and is the perfect base for all your travel capsule wardrobes.

Having said that however if you want to have more seasonal or destination specific minimalist travel capsule wardrobes you may want to check our other more specific travel capsule wardrobes for more specific guidance:

So now you know what a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Red and black clothes flat lay with leather jacket, shoes and jeans

Whenever I am putting together a capsule travel wardrobe I always start with the same principles for narrowing down my selection. The first being:

Select a color palette

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe for travel. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits.

But a color palette does not have to be boring or monochrome in order to create a successful capsule wardrobe.

However for this example of the perfect travel capsule wardrobe for minimalist travelers we have stuck to a relatively muted color palette using neutral colors. That is because we aim to have only c.10 clothing items in this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe. However if you have a signature color or palette you prefer go for it!

Plan out your outfits in advance

Folded Linen Clothes for Travel

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times.

Have machine washable items

Although part of the success to many capsule wardrobe is having fewer but higher quality pieces there is a word of caution to be had when putting together a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe.

We recommend buying items of as high a quality as your budget can afford as you will only be selecting a limited number of clothes. But do check the washing instructions before purchase.

If you are going on a longer trip with a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe you are going to need to do some laundry. It will be easier if you can put items in a washing machine rather than sending them out for dry cleaning constantly.

Avoid lots of patterns

Although I LOVE patterns, and usually have at least one patterned item on my packing lists, I recommend avoid lots of patterns when doing minimalist packing. That is because it is harder to coordinate lots of bold patterns together and can restrict the number of outfits you can take.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic minimalist travel capsule wardrobe. However a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

That is because you can always get heat waves and cold snaps no matter when and where you are traveling and may mean you need to alter some of the pieces on this packing list.

Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe we will look at the essential pieces to include:

Best Pants for Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

Black Pants

No packing list or capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of black pants in my opinion.

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant which happily come in black as standard (though there are also some great bold colors too).

These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling and including in this minimalist capsule wardrobe.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your luggage and means as a minimalist traveler you may be able to travel with carry on only / hand luggage only.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

A Pair of Jeans

Although a pair of jeans may not be an essential as part of a summer capsule wardrobe they are absolutely an essential item for my minimalist travel capsule wardrobe at other times of year.

Although black jeans are super versatile pieces, the fact that you are traveling with a black pant means that you may want a different color.

Personally I prefer to travel with a dark blue pair of jeans as part of this minimalist wardrobe for travel. They are more versatile and hide stains better than light wash jeans. Also you will find in Europe in particular that dark blue are a popular style and more in keeping with more local fashion.

To have a pair of jeans that works in most locations around the world I would personally also go for a style that is more fitted or even a pair of skinny jeans as opposed to ripped or boyfriend style jeans.

I recommend packing your favorite pair of jeans where possible, however if you are looking for the best jeans for travel we don’t think that you can go wrong with the Eddie Bauer Voyager jeans! These jeans have amazing flex that mean they are comfy even on long haul flights, but are also completely machine washable.

Note : if you are traveling to a warm-weather trip these could be swapped out for a pair of shorts instead.

My final essential bottom has to be a skirt. I recommend trying to stick to a neutral color pallette again. I tend to select something in black, tan or navy.

Although you can go with any skirt style you like, my preferred length when traveling minimalist is a midi length skirt. This is because mini skirts are not allowed at religious sites such as the Vatican, Italian churches and the Sagrada Familia to name but a few.

While a maxi dress or skirt on the other hand can drag on the floor and can become a hazard especially when doing activities such as cycling in Amsterdam .

For this reason we think a midi skirt if the perfect compromise. I personally like these black pleated skirts however tulle skirts are also very popular amongst the digital nomads and travellers today and is great for getting that perfect instagram shot! However this is a personal style choice and you should pack the style you are most comfy in.

Click here to shop best skirts for minimalist travel wardrobes.

Dresses are a hard one to include in a minimalist capsule wardrobe as you will need accessories to style them differently, and they can be quite seasonal.

However one type of dress I love for a capsule wardrobe is the classic little black dress. This is one of those timeless pieces that every woman should have in their wardrobe, for travel or not.

While you can pick any style of little black dress (LBD) that you want, I personal think the most versatile style for a capsule wardrobe has to be the classic wrap dress. I tend to select a midi dress for the same reasons as above.

This can be paired with white sneakers for a daytime look, but can be smarter with some statement jewelry and a pashmina or cardigan etc.

Click here to shop wrap dresses for travel.

Best Tops for a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

So now you know the best pants and dresses to take for your minimalist travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to the best tops to pack for travel.

No capsule wardrobe, no matter the destination or season is complete without a basic tee. Now you could go with a white t-shirt, however these show marks very quickly. For this reason I tend to avoid a plain white tee as part of a capsule travel wardrobe.

Instead opt for something neutral like tan or grey, but if you are looking to put some color in your wardrobe you can add something really bright. And because all of your bottoms are neutral you can really go with any color you like!

You could also pack a black top but I find this personally to be a little to monotone.

Note : you could go with something with a graphic or illustration. Personally I am partial to a band tee. However for Europe you will find that plain t shirts are more in keeping with local styles.

Also you could select a tank top over a tee with a cap sleeve. But as there are places where you have to cover your shoulders i.e. churches and temples I prefer to go with a cap sleeve t shirt.

Click here to shop tees for travel.

Patterned blouse

Although I limit the number of patterned items that I take when putting together a minimalist capsule wardrobe, I like to include a patterned blouse. It is a great way of adding a visual statement to your wardrobe and can be worn for both day and night looks.

White Shirt

Although I don’t tend to pack too many white items in a capsule wardrobe, I think a crisp white button down shirt is a must have statement piece.

Personally I love to have an oversized blouse but this is a personal choice.

Best Layers for your Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Camel cardigan.

For me a camel cardigan is one of those timeless pieces that everyone should have in their wardrobe as they are great for year-round capsule wardrobes.

They pair well will denim and black pants and are an elegant top layer for dinners and evenings out.

Click here to shop camel cardigans.

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

But I would also pack some top layers / Jackets. You won’t need all of these but it is best to pick in relation to the weather at your destination.

Best Jackets for a Minimalist Travel wardrobe

As you are traveling in a minimalist way, I recommend packing one of the below. However depending on the destination and type of year of travel / season will depend on which jacket is most appropriate. However here are our favorite jackets for travel.

Leather Jacket

I personally prefer a leather jacket over a denim jacket. That is just because I hate denim on denim and there are always jeans in my capsule wardrobe. However this is just my style.

For the color combinations in this minimalist capsule wardrobe a black leather jacket is most versatile. However if you go for a navy base color then a brown leather jacket would be a great pick.

Click here to shop leather jackets.

Trench Coat

A trench coat is a particularly stylish item that I usually include on my Europe travel capsule wardrobe.

Personally I like to have one that has at least some water resistance.

Shop trench coats here.

Waterproof Coat / Jacket

If you are traveling in the cooler months of late fallthen a heavier jacket or puffer is a good idea for chillier temperatures. In some rare occasion you may need a full coat but this is destination specific.

And dependent on the weather will depend on whether you need something that is water resistant or fully waterproof.

Best Shoes for Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you have the main staple items of our travel capsule wardrobe for minimalists we will turn our attention to the best pair of shoes to pack. I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack . However for my minimalist travel capsule wardrobe I recommend just two pairs of shoes. They are:

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds for vacations that will involve lots of walking. Ecco are another good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However overall the most versatile sneaker for Fall travel has to be plain white sneakers. My current favorite brand is the  Addidas Cloud Foam  as they are just so comfy for walking in and work well worn with dresses, skirts, jeans and more.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing one of the following two items depending on time of year and weather at your destination:

Ankle Boots

Ankle boots or chelsea boots are great for travel in the Winter or shoulder seasons and for destinations that won’t be hot. They look smarter for dinners than sneakers and can also cope with cold and even rainy weather if you pick the right pair.

For the color scheme of this minimalist travel capsule wardrobe I recommend packing a black pair.

Shop ankle boots here.

However if you are going to a warm weather destination, or beach location then sandals should be your choice instead of ankle boots.

Click here to shop comfortable walking sandals.

Note : flip flops really aren’t comfortable shoes for walking in, so I only pack these if I have plenty of room in my case and if I will be spending lots of time on the beach rather than sightseeing in a city.

I like to pick a pair that is good for walking and has arch support for walking too. Brands I love for this are Teva and Birkenstock but you should pick the style and look you are most comfortable with.

What else to Pack for your Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

All of the above are essentials in my minimalist travel wardrobe however the items in this section are nice to haves that can dress up and style outfits differently while not taking up much space in your case.

How much underwear you need to pack as part of your capsule travel wardrobe will depend on how long you are traveling for and what access to laundry facilities you will have. Therefore pack appropriately.

However one item we always include is a flesh colored bra. This will go under any color top and as is an essential in my book.

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect fall capsule wardrobe.

They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

For more information on how to travel with jewelry check out this post.

Crossbody Bag

A  crossbody bag,  the anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in cities such as Rome and Barcelona.

It can add peace of mind for travellers by making you a harder target for pickpockets. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop  crossbody bags here.

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photo.

For Summer I would pack a wide brimmed straw hat for extra sun protection, for the shoulder season a suede type floppy hair is a great idea but for Winter a beanie for added warmth is my go to.

Bathing Suit

Only required if you plan on swimming on your vacation.

Good Deodorant

As the point of a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe is to reuse items to create many different looks it is absolutely essential that you have a good deodorant that works for you. Otherwise you may find yourself short on the top front.

How to Create a Minimalist Travel Wardrobe That Isn't Bland

If baggage fees and heavy luggage are weighing you down, it’s time to embrace the minimalist travel wardrobe trend. Before I created my travel capsule wardrobe, packing felt stressful. It was a guessing game of what outfits to bring, and how much I could stuff into my suitcase before the zippers split open.

Flat lay of travel capsule wardrobe, including striped shoes, straw hat, and tank top.

Today, I can pack for a week in a backpack in under 10 minutes!

Before we go any further, I’d like to clear up a common misconception about minimalist travel clothes. Your vacation wardrobe does not need to be black, white, and bland.

I’ve read too many articles that push colorless clothes as the ultimate mix and match travel wardrobe. While it’s certainly easier to pair monochromatic items, it definitely takes the fun out of it. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy wearing colorful pieces when I’m on vacation!

Fortunately, you can look great and still travel ultralight if you’re strategic about what and how you pack. I’ll be sharing my super-easy rule for coordinating vacation clothes later in the post.

Steps to Build Your Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

Start with an ultralight travel packing list, my travel capsule wardrobe for europe (and beyond), invest in travel capsule wardrobe essentials.

  • Use a carryon backpack for traveling without luggage

Stack of vintage suitcases.

In the world of minimalist travel, there’s only room to bring the essentials. And the best way to keep yourself from over-packing is to create an ultralight travel packing list.

Your list will be unique to you, because everyone has their own special needs. For example, I’m fine with using any provided hair products, but I have to bring my own face wash. I also have to wear supportive shoes, so I can’t just walk around in a pair of flats for a whole trip.

Here’s an example of what goes in my minimalist travel backpack  for a one week trip:

  • 4 pairs of socks (two of which are re-wearable SmartWool )
  • 2 sets of pajamas
  • 7 pairs of underwear
  • Hairties and bobby pins
  • Eye makeup (I don’t typically wear anything else)
  • Face cleanser
  • Moisturizer
  • Dry shampoo ( Living Proof’s Perfect Hair Day is a must for my oily hair)
  • Portable battery pack (I don’t travel without my Anker PowerCore )
  • Universal travel adapter ( Dandelion and BESTEK are my favorites)
  • Headphones (ditching wired headphones for Jabra bluetooth earbuds changed my life)

Choose coordinating minimalist travel clothes

The real secret to creating a minimalist travel wardrobe is learning to think outside of “outfits”.

Many people I know pack individual outfits for each day, and maybe an extra dress and a pair of heels “just in case”. But the beauty of a travel capsule wardrobe is that everything can be mixed and matched.

Instead of 7 distinct outfits, you have 7-10 pieces that all work together no matter how you pair them.

The easiest way to do this is by following the neutral rule.

With the neutral rule, you either wear all neutral on top, or all neutral on bottom. That means there’s plenty of room for color in every outfit!

Personally, I travel with black and grey jeans, and I pack brightly colored tops. But if you have a favorite floral skirt or red pants, bring along some black, white, or grey tops to match.

Woman wearing mix and match travel wardrobe of black jeans, red hat, and blue backpack.

Another option is to choose complementary colors.

These are hues that sit opposite one another on the color wheel, like blue and orange. And when you pair them together, they create outfits with impact.

You should still mix some neutrals into your minimalist travel wardrobe. But focusing on complementary colors means you can bring a pink skirt and green top without fear of clashing.

Red and white top with blue jeans make great minimalist travel clothes.

Finally, pastel hues make great minimalist travel clothes.

The softness of the colors makes them easy to mix and match. When choosing pieces, stick to faded greens, pinks, blues, and yellows. Some people think pastels are only for spring, but who could say no to a powder blue sweater in winter?

Close-up of pastel colored sweaters on white hangars.

If you follow me on Instagram , you know I mostly travel around Europe. I also carry a camera bag and tripod, and tend to clock over 20,000 steps every day. As you might imagine, I don’t fill my bag with dresses and heels!

Comfort is #1 for me, but I don’t want to stick out in a city of well-dressed people. Thus, my travel capsule wardrobe for Europe balances comfort and style.

Here’s what I pack for a trip to Europe (and pretty much everywhere):

2 Pairs of Jeans

Instead of traditional blue, I opt for pairs of black or grey skinny jeans. They go with any top and can be dressed up or down.

If you’re more into relaxed fit, these Levi’s are super comfortable and look cute with a tucked-in or cropped top.

Casual Dress

If the weather is right, I like to bring a fun yet casual dress. Having a dress on hand also means I won’t feel out of place if we decide to have a nice dinner.

Black Cardigan

When exploring Europe’s beautiful cathedrals and scenic overlooks, a cardigan is a must. Sometimes I’ll tie it around my waist on the plane to save space in my bag.

Black & White Striped Long Sleeve Shirt

This neutral staple is in heavy rotation for my everyday and travel wardrobes. I like the long sleeve option, because you can wear it all day without getting too hot or cold.

3 Colorful Tops

I follow the “neutral rule” for bottoms, so I brighten my outfits with vibrant tops. I tend to wear 3/4 length sleeves, or pair a short/sleeveless top with my black cardigan.

Ballet Flats

I wear tennis shoes on the plane and for most of my trips. But I always keep a pair of nude ballet flats in my backpack for nicer occasions.

Save me for later!

Minimalist travel wardrobe flat lay with jeans, sweater, and accessories, with text overlay - "how to stop overpacking and travel light".

If you’ve embraced the minimalist lifestyle , you know the value of investing in versatile, quality items. Having things like wrinkle free travel clothes or convertible dresses are key to packing light.

I always shop my closet before adding any new purchases. But if you don’t already own the right pieces, here are some travel capsule wardrobe essentials to buy:

  • Three-in-one jacket : Look for one that’s weather-proof and hooded so you can skip the umbrella.
  • Comfortable & neutral shoes : Choose a pair that work with pants and skirts/dresses, like classic white Adidas .
  • Wrinkle-resistant fabrics: Materials like wool, polyester, and knits naturally repel wrinkles, so no wasting precious vacation time ironing!

Use a carry on backpack for traveling without luggage

Black carry on backpack with items for traveling without luggage.

The best thing about having a minimalist travel wardrobe is that it can easily fit into a carry on. I can pack for a week in a backpack, which is far more comfortable to carry around than a roller bag.

I’ve written an entire post on my favorite minimalist travel backpacks , along with dozens of tips for traveling without luggage.

My Tortuga Setout is spacious, comfortable, and opens like a suitcase. It was an investment, but it’s built to last and makes traveling with only a backpack a real joy.

Check out my review of the Tortuga Setout vs. Osprey Farpoint for more details.

I hope I’ve convinced you that creating a minimalist travel wardrobe is easy! Say goodbye to heavy suitcases and monochrone outfits, and hello to traveling light and colorfully.

I am preparing to take an 8 month contract at a resort in Alaska. I will part of the administrative team which requires a business casual wardrobe. I will be living on the property in a small studio and will not have much room for storage. Any suggestions that you may be able to offer, or guidance points to look for as I prepare to embark on this incredible journey.

What an amazing opportunity, Betty! Under-bed storage boxes are great for small spaces. If you have a closet or a narrow space, you could add a tension rod (like the ones for shower curtains) to create additional hanging space.

You could also use the shower organizers to hang from under the mattress to put shoes in also. Would have to cut it some to fit under mattress and hang over / under the mattress but it works.

Great article! Where did those brown shoes in the photo with the yellow sweater come from 😍

Thanks Kaitlyn! Sadly this is a stock flat lay, so I don’t know where to buy those cute shoes. I believe they’re brown leather Oxfords, so maybe you’ll find some in a shop near you!

Finally a minimalist packing list that is minimalist. Just last year I went to southern Africa for 3 months and took nothing more. I’m not a kid either – 69 and it is still highly doable.

Thanks for your feedback, Karen! I’m always glad to hear stories from other minimalist travelers.

Thank you, Chelsea! Every overseas trip has taught me to pack lighter and lighter. What I love about your suggestions for the wardrobe is bringing in color. I do not like the minimalists lists that use only drab colors. I am in my 70s now and with pain issues I can no longer do the backpacking but I did invest in a very lightweight roller suitcase (carry-on size) that I use for even my 3-month Europe trips. The other item is a small daypack that works as my personal item for flights and contains purse items and essentials for the plane so that I don’t have to get into my suitcase on the plane.

Those are great tips, Jane! I don’t think people realize how much unnecessary stuff they pack for travel. Most are baffled that I can travel for weeks with just a backpack.

I want to hear more about your three month Europe trips! You’re living my dream…

Hi, Chelsea

Personally, I never pack pajamas for trips that are 7 days or less, even for my 12-day trips to Europe and Japan.. I mostly packed no-wrinkle T’s with shorts that could be used for sleep as well as regular outfits.. This was specially helpful when we flew low cost flights to Europe with only 10kg of total carry-on allowance..

Thanks for the useful list. Just finished a multi-week French adventure and packed with this list! Did laundry once, and my bag is currently full of funk but that would have been easily correctable if I’d stayed longer and needed to do more laundry. I bought a corkscrew/bottle opener tool for about 3 euros at a grocery store when I first arrived. The little foil cutter knife worked for sausages too, so that plus a spoon was all I needed for all kinds of picnics. Therefore I’d add a grapefruit spoon (serrated, for scooping melon or whatever else you like), and a corkscrew as an optional item if checking the bag and inclined to use one. Travel-sized Febreze was a huge help too, and my cute scarf was ideal for dressing up the basics.

I would add a silk scarf. My husband has gifted me a few and I always take one. If it’s cold, it warms my neck. If it’s 94 in Rome (last month), it can be dipped in the fountains and draped on my neck. If I want to dress up my outfit, it works. If my neck is chafing against my purse strap, it provides a buffer. If I want to portage a snack, it can be the wrapper. If you have an accident, (ahem, of many types in my family), it can help wipe/clean/bandage.

What a fantastic idea! I always considered silk scarfs a frivolous accessory (unless I’m going to Paris!). Thank you for the tip!

I wish I could be that carefree. I am going to Scotland in September and the weather can change in an instant. I am going to pack some summer clothes and some fall clothes. Rain coat, rain boots, silk as well as a warm scarf. I tend to get a soar throat easily. Also PJs, T-shirts, a couple sweaters, underwear, socks, walking shoes, slacks, leggings and lots of Anti-acids for my poor wee tummy and Tylenol for my arthritis. To me that is packing light! He! He!

I think when you go to a climate like that, you do have to pack for two seasons! Everything you mentioned can cross over a bit or can be used several ways. Scarves are always my favorite thing for warmth or cute accessory instead of jewelry (and I’m a jewelry lover!). Suggestion: I like to lay everything out on the guest bed for several days. See what’s really needed. It’s also a great way to see what color theme you might have going and pick scarves accordingly! By laying things out you can see what mixes and matches, too, and gives more outfits if needed! I’ve been to Ireland and England many times but would love to try Scotland! Have an amazing time!

Europe has the best antacids called Reni! Beats Tums any day. I stock up on them when I’m in Ireland. I know they have them in U.K. too.

How to Make a Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

Creating a minimalist travel wardrobe involves careful curation and thoughtful selection. Here are some tips to help you achieve a minimalist approach:

  • Quality over Quantity: Invest in well-made, durable pieces that will last for multiple trips, rather than purchasing trendy items that may quickly go out of style.
  • Versatility is Key: Choose items that can be styled in various ways and can be worn for different occasions. This ensures maximum outfit options with minimal items.
  • Streamline Accessories: Opt for a few versatile accessories, such as scarves and statement jewelry, that can elevate your outfits without taking up too much space.
  • Plan Your Outfits in Advance: Before your trip, plan out different outfits using the items you’ve selected for your travel capsule. This will help you pack more efficiently and avoid any last-minute fashion dilemmas.

Essential Clothing Items for Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe

When putting together your travel capsule wardrobe, consider including these essential clothing items:

  • Classic Trench Coat: A timeless trench coat is perfect for layering and adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit.
  • Comfortable Jeans or Trousers: Opt for a well-fitting pair of jeans or trousers that can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.
  • Versatile Dresses: Pack a couple of versatile dresses that can be worn on their own during the day or dressed up for an evening out.
  • Basic Tees and Blouses: Include a few basic tees and blouses in neutral colors that can be easily mixed and matched with your bottoms.
  • Lightweight Sweaters: Pack a couple of lightweight sweaters that can be layered or worn on their own, depending on the weather.

Travel-Friendly Shoes for Your Capsule Wardrobe

When it comes to footwear, choose comfortable yet stylish options that can be paired with multiple outfits. Consider including:

  • Classic Flats or Loafers: Opt for a pair of comfortable flats or loafers that are suitable for walking and can be worn with both pants and dresses.
  • Stylish Sneakers: Pack a pair of trendy sneakers that offer comfort and support for days when you’ll be doing a lot of walking or exploring.

Tips for Efficient Packing

To ensure your travel capsule wardrobe fits seamlessly into your suitcase, follow these efficient packing tips:

  • Roll Your Clothes: Rolling your clothing items instead of folding them saves space and minimizes wrinkles.
  • Use Packing Cubes: Invest in packing cubes to keep your clothes organized and maximize space within your suitcase.
  • Pack Multi-Purpose Items: Choose items that can serve multiple functions, such as a sarong that can be used as a cover-up, scarf, or beach towel.

Embracing a Minimalist Travel Mindset

Creating a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe is not just about packing efficiently; it’s also about embracing a minimalist mindset during your trip. Here are some tips:

  • Emphasize Experiences: Shift your focus from material possessions to the experiences and memories you’ll create during your travels.
  • Pack Memories, Not Souvenirs: Instead of purchasing trinkets or souvenirs, opt for capturing memories through photographs or journaling.

By adopting a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe, you can streamline your packing process, save time and effort, and ensure you always look stylish and put-together during your adventures. Remember, it’s not about sacrificing style but rather creating a well-curated wardrobe that allows you to focus on what truly matters – enjoying your journey and embracing the world with open arms.

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

By packing strategically and thoughtfully, you can:

  • Streamline your packing process
  • Avoid overpacking
  • Free yourself from the stress of deciding what to wear each day of your trip

The idea behind a travel capsule wardrobe is to choose items that are:

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to care for, making it ideal for any length of travel, from a weekend getaway to a long-term adventure

Why Create a Vacation Capsule Wardrobe?

By taking the time to plan and pack your outfits, you can significantly reduce the stress and hassle of packing for a trip. A well-planned travel wardrobe allows you to pack more efficiently while still having enough options for different occasions and weather changes.

Aside from being practical, a minimalist travel wardrobe can also help you feel more confident and put-together during your travels.

With carefully chosen pieces that suit your personal style and complement each other, you can effortlessly mix and match outfits that look great and make you feel great.

Plus, having a clear plan for what to wear each day can free up your mental space and energy to focus on enjoying your trip and creating new memories.

Finally, creating a minimalistic travel wardrobe can also be a sustainable and eco-friendly choice .

By packing only what you need and investing in high-quality , durable pieces that can be worn multiple times, you can minimize the amount of waste and unnecessary consumption associated with fast fashion and overpacking.

Benefits of Creating a Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

Creating a minimalist travel wardrobe has numerous benefits that go beyond simply saving space and time.

Another benefit of a minimalist travel wardrobe is that it can help you save money by reducing the need for frequent clothing purchases and allowing you to invest in high-quality, long-lasting items.

Overall, a minimalist travel wardrobe can enhance your travel experience by:

  • Providing ease
  • Sustainability
  • Cost-effectiveness

In the next section, we will explore how to assess your itinerary and climate to ensure that you pack the right items for your trip.

The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Travel Capsule Wardrobe:

1. assess your itinerary and climate.

To make the most out of your travel capsule wardrobe, it’s important to assess your itinerary and climate before making any packing decisions.

Consider the activities you have planned and the weather conditions you’ll be facing in each location.

If you’ll be doing a lot of walking or outdoor activities, you’ll want to pack comfortable and practical clothing such as breathable tops and sturdy footwear.

On the other hand, if your itinerary includes more formal events or dinners, you’ll need to pack dressier options like a little black dress or a pair of trousers and a blouse.

It’s also important to research the climate for each destination and pack accordingly. If you’re headed to a warmer climate, pack lightweight and breathable fabrics such as:

If you’re traveling to a cooler climate, opt for:

With this in mind, let’s move on to the next section and explore how to choose the right fabrics for your travel capsule wardrobe.

2. Choose the Right Fabrics

When it comes to choosing the right fabrics for your travel capsule wardrobe, there are a few things to keep in mind. First and foremost, you want to select fabrics that are comfortable and versatile.

Look for materials that are:

  • Easy to care for
  • Wrinkle-resistant
  • Can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion

Another factor to consider is the durability of your fabrics. When you’re on the go, you want pieces that can withstand wear and tear.

Look for materials that are sturdy and can be easily laundered. Fabrics such as denim and twill are great options for pants and skirts, while cotton blends and knit fabrics work well for tops.

By choosing fabrics that are comfortable, versatile, and durable, you can create a travel capsule wardrobe that is practical and stylish. With this in mind, it’s time to move on to the next section and explore how to stick to a neutral color palette.

3. Stick to a Neutral Color Palette

travel capsule wardrobe

To fully maximize the versatility of your travel capsule wardrobe, it’s wise to stick to a neutral color palette.

Pick neutral colors like:

These colors are timeless, classic, and easy to mix and match. They also make it easier to create multiple outfits out of just a few pieces.

When creating a travel capsule wardrobe, it’s important to choose colors that can work well together.

By sticking to neutrals, you can easily create a cohesive and streamlined look. You can add pops of color through accessories or statement pieces, which we’ll discuss in the next section.

Not only do neutral colors make it easy to mix and match, but they also tend to be less noticeable when it comes to stains and dirt. This means you can get away with wearing the same pieces multiple times without worrying about them looking dirty or worn out.

Overall, opting for a neutral color palette is a smart move when it comes to creating a travel capsule wardrobe that’s both practical and stylish. With your color scheme sorted, it’s time to explore how to mix and match your basics with statement pieces for maximum outfit options.

4. Mix and Match Basics with Statement Pieces

Choosing a neutral color palette for your travel capsule wardrobe is a great starting point. But, how do you take things up a notch and infuse some personality into your outfits?

That’s where mixing and matching basics with statement pieces comes in!

For example, pair a classic white tee and denim shorts with a bold printed scarf or a bright blazer for a pop of color. Or, style your go-to little black dress with a statement necklace or a colorful clutch.

The key is to balance your outfit with one statement piece and keep the rest of the pieces simple.

Mixing and matching basics and statement pieces not only adds variety to your travel wardrobe but also allows you to showcase your personal style. And, with a carefully curated selection of both, you’ll have endless outfit options to choose from.

Next up, we’ll explore how to accessorize your outfits for even more versatility.

5. Accessorize for Versatility

Mixing and matching your travel wardrobe is a great way to stay stylish and versatile on the go. But, how do you take it up a notch and create even more outfit options?

The answer lies in accessorizing.

Accessories are the cherry on top that can transform a simple outfit into a chic ensemble. Pack a few statement pieces, such as a colorful scarf or bold jewelry, to bring some personality to your basics.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match patterns and textures either – a printed scarf can add a nice pop to a solid-colored top, while a metallic belt can elevate a monochromatic look.

Another way to accessorize for versatility is to pack pieces that can be worn in multiple ways. A hat, for example, can shield you from the sun during the day and add some flair to your evening look.

A versatile bag can be dressed up or down depending on your outfit. And, a simple wrap can be worn as a scarf, shawl, or even a makeshift blanket on a chilly airplane.

Accessorizing not only expands your outfit options but also helps you pack less.

By packing a few key accessories, you can create multiple looks without having to bring a whole extra outfit. Plus, accessories don’t take up much space, leaving more room for other travel essentials.

Of course, when it comes to accessories, one size doesn’t fit all.

When choosing what to bring always consider:

  • Your destination
  • Personal style

Once you have these figured out, make sure to always prioritize comfort and practicality as well!

Next up, let’s talk about the importance of choosing the right shoes for your travel capsule wardrobe.

6. Consider the Shoes

When it comes to building your travel capsule wardrobe, accessories can make or break your entire look. But among all the accessories, shoes could be the trickiest to choose from. After all, you want to look stylish, but you must also be comfortable as you explore new destinations.

Before selecting which shoes to pack, think about the activities you’ll be doing on your trip. Will you be walking a lot? Are there any formal occasions you’ll be attending?

Will you be visiting any religious sites that require conservative dress? Consider these factors when selecting what shoes to bring with you.

Additionally, think about the weather at your destination. Will it be rainy or snowy? Will you need to pack warm boots or sandals? Do some research ahead of time to make sure you’re prepared for any type of weather you may encounter.

When it comes to style, prioritize versatility. Choose shoes that can easily be dressed up or down and can be worn with multiple outfits. Neutral colors like black, white, and tan are always a safe bet.

If you’re looking to add some color or pattern to your wardrobe, choose shoes that will complement, not clash with, the rest of your outfits.

Lastly, don’t forget about comfort. Walking around in uncomfortable shoes can quickly ruin a day of exploring. Look for shoes that have adequate support and cushioning, and make sure to break them in before your trip.

Choosing the right shoes for your travel capsule wardrobe can be a daunting task, but with some planning and consideration, it can be a great addition to your overall travel experience. Happy travels!

Final Thoughts | The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Creating a travel capsule wardrobe can save you from the chaos of overpacking and lead to a hassle-free travel experience.

By assessing your itinerary and climate, choosing the right fabrics, sticking to a neutral color palette, mixing and matching basics with statement pieces, accessorizing for versatility, and considering the shoes, you’ll be able to pack like a pro.

Minimalism is the key to a stress-free journey so start planning your minimalist travel wardrobe today.

Remember, not only will you save space and money, but you’ll also look stylish and put-together on your next adventure.

As Vivienne Westwood once said, “Buy less, choose well, make it last,” and with a travel capsule wardrobe, you’ll be doing just that.

Happy travels!

7 Minimalist Outfit Ideas for Your Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Simplify your suitcase with instant outfits like elevated linen sets, lightweight layers, and breezy dresses.

woman wearing white button down and white pants

Balmy days are on the horizon, and you likely have a sun-filled trip (or two) lined up on your schedule. Whether you’re jetting off to a tropical island or heading to a bustling city, you’ll want to rely on a summer travel capsule wardrobe to make the most of your vacation days. After all, you should be spending your time lounging or exploring—not rummaging through your overstuffed suitcase while trying to figure out what to wear.

A summer travel capsule wardrobe should include easy-to-style practical staples with versatile neutral hues and simple silhouettes that you can effortlessly cycle through on rotation. As you pack for your next summer getaway, consider pieces like airy linen pants to help you beat the sweltering heat, white button-down shirts that can be used as both beach cover-ups and casual tops, and comfortable shoes that can be worn during an entire day of sightseeing.

Now that you've completed the basics let's get into the outfits. If you’re a fashion enthusiast like myself, you’ll find that mixing and matching these pieces is where the fun really begins. I’ve curated a list of looks that will round out any summer travel capsule wardrobe—from a crisp linen set you can wear during the day to the perfect minimalist maxi dress for a night out. Follow this outfit formula and all that’s left for you to do is sit back, relax, and enjoy your vacation.

A timeless white linen set can (and should) be worn on repeat during any summer vacation.

A multipurpose white button-down is essential, no matter the design. Wear it as a cover-up on the beach, or style it with matching linen pants for a casual day out (as seen above). You could even style this monochromatic uniform as an elevated alternative to a sweat set for your next airport outfit . To compliment this look, throw a few neutral accessories into the mix.

Sea View Linen Cover-Up Tunic

A Laid-Back Top With Airy Linen Shorts

Prioritize comfort with a casual outfit that's easy to move around in.

A few summers ago, I traveled to Madrid and wore a casual top paired with loose-fitting linen shorts practically every other day—for leisurely city walks, local food market trips, and even museum visits. This practical look has remained one of my go-to travel capsule wardrobe outfits. If your trip itinerary involves countless city excursions, I recommend wearing this outfit styled with a pair of cushioned sneakers and a hands-free crossbody bag .

Sweater Tube Top

A Sophisticated Maxi Dress With Elevated Accessories

woman wearing black dress

Alongside casual basics, your summer travel capsule wardrobe should include a few elevated pieces for formal occasions.

If you’re planning a girl's trip or a romantic getaway with your special someone, I’m guessing you’ve got plenty of evening dinners on the itinerary. The foolproof option for a night out is a sleek black maxi dress embellished with subtle pieces of silver jewelry . This look will not only serve you during your next summer vacation but also for many warm-weather trips to come. because a black maxi dress and sleek accessories will never go out of style.

Sariah Smocked Organic Cotton Midi Dress

A Cozy Cardigan With Lightweight Layers

woman wearing striped top and white shorts

Summer is filled with sizzling hot days, but that doesn't mean temperatures can't drop. Prepare for chilly moments by the shore with a snug cardigan.

For your next seaside vacation, you’ll want to pack a cardigan to throw over your shoulders when coastal temperatures fall. Any lightweight layer will fit the bill, but consider a striped sweater to give your travel capsule wardrobe a nautical-inspired boost. Style this piece over a gauzy outfit so you won’t overheat. Carry a beach bag that’s large enough to store your sweater if you decide to shed a layer.

Emilie Sweater Lady Jacket in Stripe

A Breathable Top With a Roomy Skirt

woman wearing tank top and skirt

You simply can't go wrong with neutral basics. For style inspiration, look no further than this easy outfit.

Alongside linen shorts and pants, a relaxed skirt is another warm-weather essential for plenty of use during a sun-filled vacation. Choose a neutral shade—white, tan, or beige—that will go well with other colors. For an uncomplicated look, team your roomy skirt with a breathable tank top and take the subdued color palette further with brown slide sandals and a matching leather-trimmed tote. If you’re in the mood for jewelry, heat things up with warm gold accessories.

Madewell Supima® Rib Cutaway Tank

A Colorful Dress With a Woven Bag and Statement Accessories

Play into summery colors by way of a relaxed dress.

While the foundation of your travel capsule wardrobe should include great mix-and-match basics, you’re allowed to spice things up here and there. Liven up your vacation outfits with a colorful dress—and if you’re stuck on which shade to choose try a trending butter yellow hue— a summery shade that will have a place in your warm-weather wardrobe for years to come. Complete this cheerful outfit with a woven bag and statement accessories to add some texture to your look.

The Corinna Dress

A Pair of Sporty Shorts With a Basic Top

For moments of downtime during your vacation, consider an easygoing outfit.

I love a travel itinerary packed with endless activities, but I always carve out a bit of downtime, too. Whether lounging around my hotel room or reading a book by the pool, I throw on this foolproof outfit formula for lazy vacation days: a pair of sporty shorts, a basic tank top, flip-flops, and a cozy, lightweight sweater.

Colorful Minimalist Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Building a minimalist wardrobe does not mean resigning to a boring world of greys, blacks, and whites—far from it!

A minimalist winter travel capsule wardrobe is all about traveling light without sacrificing style, color, or comfort. It’s the travel hack of the century.

I love traveling as a minimalist and I love dressing colorfully, and in this blog post, I want to help you do it too.

What is a Minimalist Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A minimalist winter capsule wardrobe is a collection of versatile and essential clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits for the winter season.

The goal of a minimalist capsule wardrobe is to have a smaller, but functional wardrobe, reducing the need for excess and unnecessary items.

Minimalist Packing for Winter Trip - 25 L Backpack

Benefits of a Minimalist Winter Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Packing light with a capsule wardrobe allows for easy mobility between destinations – no more lugging around heavy suitcases or paying extra baggage fees !

Plus, you’ll discover the joy of redefining your personal style with a few well-chosen pieces.

On my last trip to wintery London, I only had a 25-liter Patagonia backpack . And in this backpack, there was everything I needed for a 2-month trip. Thanks to my thoughtfully curated winter capsule wardrobe, I effortlessly fashioned numerous stylish outfits.

When traveling with a small bag, it’s not just your wardrobe that needs to be minimized, you also need to minimize your toiletries . Check out this minimalist winter packing list for the essential items I brought with me.

How to Build a Winter Capsule Wardrobe

Now, onto the exciting part: a minimalist capsule wardrobe list and tips for selecting the right items.

You can build a fantastic capsule wardrobe using the clothes you already own, no need to buy new pieces specifically for your travel wardrobe.

  • Start with your favorite piece of clothing which you love to wear in winter. On my last trip, I started with my colorful cardigan.
  • Create one full outfit, so you have one pair of pants, one T-shirt, and one cardigan.
  • Find 2 to 3 other T-shirts that go with the same cardigan and the same pants.
  • Find 1 or 2 skirts which go with all your T-shirts.
  • Grab 1 pair of thin tights and 1 pair of thick tights which you can wear with both skirts. If it gets very cold I’ll wear the thin tights underneath the thick ones.
  • Find one sweater that goes with all your existing clothing items.
  • I also like to bring a shirt, which I can wear when it’s a bit warmer and I can wear it underneath the sweater when it’s a bit colder.

After selecting all the items, I arrange them in front of me to check their compatibility. I also double-check if I like all the pieces and if I really need everything. This is the final opportunity to make any adjustments.

  • 1 to 2 skirts
  • 2 pairs of tights (1 thin and 1 thick pair of tights)
  • 1 winter coat
  • 1 woolen hat
  • 1 pair of gloves
  • 1 thick scarf
  • 1 pair of minimalist winter boots

  • I pack all my clothes in one packing cube to be more organized. A packing cube is one of my travel essentials .
  • Lay out all your outfits in front of you to get a better overview of what you want to bring. This minimalist travel packing tip will also help you avoid overpacking.

  • No matter how long your trip is, you only need your wardrobe to be enough for one week, then you can just do laundry at your accommodation or at a laundromat.

A Globe Well Travelled

Mastering a minimalist wardrobe for travel

' src=

A few years ago, a friend introduced me to the concept of a capsule wardrobe.

The theory behind a capsule wardrobe can vary depending on who you’re talking to, but the basic idea is that you have only 35-40 items in your closet at any one time, then switch out a few items at each change of season.

It might seem like a shock to those of us who enjoy shopping for clothes. 40 items seems like it wouldn’t be nearly enough to choose from! BUT – this minimalist clothing theory is supposed to help with many things, including choosing outfits more easily, saving money by eliminating unnecessary purchases, assisting the slow fashion movement , and of course, packing more easily for travel.

Not long after I first heard about the capsule wardrobe idea, I decided to try it out. I started by going through everything in my wardrobe to stocktake what I had and see if there was anything that wasn’t necessary. There were a few things I hadn’t worn in a while or that were starting to look ratty, and so I gave those items away to charity and threw out anything that wasn’t worth passing on.

After this, I went deeper by picking out items that I barely wore because they were ‘too dressy’ or didn’t match many other things. I went through my accessories as well (including shoes!), and kept only the pieces that I used most often.

I managed to whittle down my wardrobe until I had just under 40 items, total. Instead of feeling woeful about all the things that I’d gotten rid of, I felt invigorated. Everything in my wardrobe was now a useful item that I wore often. Nearly everything matched. My choices for what to wear were now obvious – there was no longer a need to stand in front of the wardrobe umming and ahhing about my choice of outfit each day.

Ever since then, I’ve had a similar number of items in my wardrobe. If one of my clothing items gets damaged or old, or if I get sick of it – I throw it away or give it to charity, then go shopping to replace it with something new that will tie in with my other pieces.

Having a minimalist wardrobe also makes it SO easy to pack for travel. I have slowly reduced the size of my luggage from a large suitcase to a  carry-on , and that small suitcase basically fits 2/3 of my entire wardrobe! I don’t have to pick and choose what items to pack for a trip – I just pack everything I have that will be appropriate for the weather at my destination.

I generally take 7-10 days worth of clothing, then depending on how long I’ll be away for, I plan to do a few loads of laundry throughout my trip.  Packing lightly has never been easier.

If you’re curious about the idea of reducing the number of items in your closet, here’s my tips on mastering a minimalist wardrobe that’s absolutely perfect for travel!

Mastering a minimalist wardrobe for travel

Reducing your wardrobe:

First up, you need to purge! This will be the hardest part, especially if you’re in the habit of going on frequent shopping trips and coming back with armfuls of new purchases each time. It will be hard to let go of these things, but you’ll feel better afterwards! Here’s how to do it:

Get everything out –  Yep, everything must come out of your wardrobe! Lay it all out on your bed. Put back only the items that you really love and that you wear regularly as those are your staples.

Consider seasonal items – There are a few things in my wardrobe that I don’t wear often because they’re seasonal, like my big winter jacket (It cost and arm and a leg so I ain’t throwing that thing away!). It’s inevitable that you’ll have a handful of items like these, so if there are some things that you will wear once summer/winter comes around, you can put those back, too.

Mix and match  – It’s very important that everything in your wardrobe can be mixed and matched with another item (or ideally, another few items!). Can  the pants that you’re considering keeping be matched with all (or most) of your tops? If so, great! If not, don’t keep it.

Use the 3 items rule  – If you’re not sure how many items of each type to keep, sticking to 3 is a good rule. If you have 3 each of tees, sweaters, jackets, and shorts, and pants, that should be an appropriate amount. If you want to keep more or less of one item type, go ahead! You don’t have to be too strict on yourself – this is your wardrobe, after all.

Underwear and sleepwear  – You can keep as many pairs of underwear as you like, though if you want to keep with the minimalist theme, be sure to throw out any underwear that you don’t use often. I probably have around 10-15 pairs of underwear and socks, and 2 sets of sleepwear.

Shoes and accessories  – It may be difficult to let go of shoes, handbags, and other accessories, but there’s no point keeping items you barely use. I actually have just one handbag, and only 7 pairs of shoes, which is plenty enough for me!

Box up the rest – With any items left remaining, consider whether you actually wear it often enough to justify keeping it. If there are some items that you aren’t sure about and don’t want to throw out ‘just in case’, try packing them into a box and storing them away somewhere. If you haven’t had to open the box to find something in a few months time, then you’ll know you made the right choice – donate the box to charity!

Mastering a minimalist wardrobe for travel

Shopping for new items:

Reducing the number of items in your wardrobe doesn’t actually mean that you have to stop buying new clothes. In fact, you may find that you need a handful of new items to tie together your remaining pieces. Be thoughtful about your future purchases, and concentrate only on buying items that actually add value to your wardrobe. Here’s a few things to take note of:

Figure out what you need  – It might be worth living with your new wardrobe for a few weeks before deciding on which new items to buy. This way, you’ll have time to discover if there are any key pieces that you’re missing.

Invest in good quality clothing  – There’s no point whittling down your wardrobe only to have to replace items every month because they’re cheap and crappy. I’ve stopped shopping at H&M and similar fast fashion stores for this reason, and instead I spend a little more money on items that will last longer.

Be wary of trends  – It’s near impossible to avoid trends when buying new clothes, but you should think about whether the trendiness of each item will last another season or two of wear. If not, don’t buy it!

Resist spontaneous purchases:  It may be tempting to whip out your credit card when you spot an item that tickles your fancy, but resist! Leave the item on the rack, go home and think about it for a few days, and if you still want it, go back to the store. That way, you’ll be sure that it really is what you want.

Remember, the process of creating a minimalist wardrobe is supposed to be a fun way to challenge your lifestyle, so look at this as a way of opening up your wardrobe choices instead of limiting them. You should feel lighter with less clutter and happier with having a more curated range of clothing to choose from when you’re deciding on something to wear.

Thank you for the tips! I’ve always had trouble with not overpacking, so this is super helpful! I’m going to London and Paris in two weeks’ time so hopefully these pointers will come in handy. 🙂

Charmaine Ng | Architecture & Lifestyle Blog http://charmainenyw.com

You’re certainly not the only one, Charmaine – I think everyone has overpacked at some stage during their travels! How exciting about your upcoming trip 😀 Let me know how you go with packing lightly!

The best thing about packing a minimalist wardrobe is that it leaves you lots more room for shopping while you’re away! ?

That is true, though be careful not to overshop on your trip as it may impact your minimalist wardrobe after you return home 😉

Thanks so much for the tips! I have been wanting to downsize the wardrobe for a while now and you’ve definitely encouraged me to do so! 🙂

So glad I could inspire you, Jordy! I’m sure you will feel so proud of yourself after successfully downsizing your wardrobe 😀

Yes! It’s a work in progress, but my philosophy is to try to keep the right amount based on my laundry schedule so that when I do a wash most of the wardrobe has been worn. So if I do laundry every 7 days I really only need about 9 pairs of underwear (a couple spare as a margin for error), and I have enough workout clothes to make one load of laundry because I use a special detergent for activewear. Does that make sense? I’m not there yet, but that’s the goal. I also watch for items with duplicate functions – if I keep a dress for nice dinners out but then realize I have 6 different outfits that work for nice dinners out and I like them all better than the dress, it can go. I have the same experience of how easy travel packing can be when you only have a small wardrobe of things that you love wearing 🙂

That totally makes sense! I also try to do laundry every 7 days and have only a few extra pairs of underwear so that I’m forced to do laundry each week 😛 It definitely helps to keep my clothing items to a minimum. And I love the idea you had about dinner outfits – great tips, Jo!

How & What to Put in your Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve probably written the digital equivalent of a novel on packing. But even armed with a near obsessive mental library of tips, hacks, and destination lists, I still found myself, 12 hours before a flight last December, scrambling to get everything in my backpack for a trip to Mexico.

Under that pressure (and a strong desire to catch a few hours of sleep before waking up at 5am), I realized just how time-inefficient my packing process was. Light, yes. Prepared, yes. But efficient? Not really. Especially when it came to choosing what clothes to pack. But after years of writing about packing, I had at least learned:

  • Having go-to items on hand can speed up your packing process
  • Clothes are the biggest variable in any packing list

Meaning: I needed a set of clothes I could quickly choose from whenever I was about to take a trip. They needed to be easy to mix and match, layer, and have options for any destination. In other words, I needed to build a travel capsule wardrobe.

Travel capsule wardrobe

What’s a travel capsule wardrobe?

A minimalist trend that began in the ‘70s, a capsule wardrobe is a wardrobe comprised of a limited number of clothes and shoes, refreshed at the beginning of each season. It’s the antithesis of fast fashion, relying on quality staples you can wear year after year, rather than having to frequently buy new clothes that quickly go out of date.

It has other perks too. By carefully selecting clothes as a set, it makes it quicker to choose outfits you always look good in. And by focusing on quality, timeless pieces, it’s meant to reduce the amount of time and money spent on fashion (a core principle some capsule wardrobes have gotten away from).

Since the trend began transforming closets, it’s been adapted for our suitcases as well. Similar to the original idea, a travel capsule wardrobe is an even more pared-down version of the original. It’s meant to make packing quicker and easier, since you’ll always have a set of trusty items you can reach for. At the same time, it helps travelers be more prepared and pack well.

How to build a travel capsule wardrobe

Capsule wardrobes have rules. Here are those rules, adapted for a travel capsule wardrobe:

  • Choose 10 items or less : Limit your travel wardrobe, including shoes, to 10 items or less (more on that in a minute).
  • Focus on quality . Choose timeless, quality pieces that don’t go out of style and work for most situations. For travel, you’ll want to focus on durable, quality fabrics as well.
  • Choose a color palette . Center everything around a color (blues, blacks, greens, greys) with one or two statement pieces to add personality to your travel closet.
  • Build two wardrobes : one for cold-weather travel, and one for warm-weather. They don’t have to be completely different (you might, for example, still use the same t-shirts) but you will swap out a few items.
  • Limit your accessories, PJs, and workout clothes. Capsule wardrobes allow you to have as many accessories, PJs, and workout clothes as you’d like, but not the travel version. Aim for one set of PJs, one set of workout clothes, and a small number of accessories. One scarf, one hat, and three pieces of jewelry is a good number to aim for.

What to include (and how many items) in a travel capsule wardrobe

The internet tends to agree that 10 items – 8 pieces of clothing and 2 pairs of shoes – is a good number to focus on for a travel capsule wardrobe. It’s restrictive but, speaking from experience, totally possible. Here’s what a 10-item travel capsule wardrobe for women would look like:

  • 2 bottoms (pants/shorts/skirts)
  • 1 dress or jumpsuit
  • 1 cardigan/sweater
  • 2 pairs shoes

As long as you stick within the 10-item rule, you can adjust the specifics according to your needs or trip. For example, I might pack a skirt instead of a dress on a warm-weather trip. Or, for cold destinations, I’d pack 2 tops and 2 sweaters, instead of 3 tops and 1 sweater.

To help you get a sense of what a women’s travel capsule wardrobe would look like IRL, I’ll next cover four different example wardrobes – a warm and cold weather wardrobe for travelers on a budget, and the same for a more premium wardrobe – and clothing recommendations. Then, we’ll dive into brands to look at when building your own wardrobe.

And if you’re keen on men’s brands make sure check out Mike’s ‘Best Clothes for a Men’s Capsule Wardrobe’ article here .

Travel capsule wardrobe

Warm-weather women’s travel capsule wardrobe examples

For warm weather travel capsule wardrobes, focus on pieces that are breathable and sweat-wicking. In terms of style, opt for pieces simple enough to work just as well for a night out as they would on the beach or trail. You’ll also want to include a layer or two for chilly plane rides, unexpectedly cold evenings, and rain. For shoes, go for a pair of comfortable sneakers and sandals — or swap one out for flats if you want to look a little dressier.

Travel capsule wardrobe

Budget example

Quality doesn’t mean breaking the bank. For those of you on a budget, here’s what a summer capsule made up of items under $80 USD (all prices from here out are in USD) might look like:

  • Shoes : TOMS Slip-on Sneakers or flats ($40-80)
  • Shoes : Teva classic sandals ($50-70)
  • Top : Woolly merino wool tank top ($40)
  • Top : Everlane cotton tank ($20)
  • Top : Everlane cotton t-shirt ($16-28)
  • Dress : prAna Paulina Dress ($80)
  • Bottoms : DUER shorts ($69)
  • Bottoms : prAna capri leggings ($65)
  • Sweater : Uniqlo Merino cardigan ($40)
  • Jacket : Columbia rain jacket shell ($40-50)

Premium example

If you have a little more wiggle room in your budget, expand your search to brands specializing in women’s technical clothing. While not necessarily built just for travel, they have the functional-fashionable qualities you’ll want in travel clothes. Here’s what a more premium summer capsule with items under $200 USD would look like:

  • Shoes : Rothy’s flats ($145)
  • Shoes : Soludos sandals ($65 – 90)
  • Top : Western Rise t-shirt or tank ($92 / $69)
  • Top : Everlane GoWeave cami ($68)
  • Top : ADAY Shell Yes Tank ($68)
  • Bottoms : ADAY Cut it Out Pant ($110)
  • Dress : Everlane Japanese GoWeave dress ($98)
  • Sweater : Betabrand cardigan ($80 -130)
  • Jacket : lululemon Deep Inhale rain jacket ($128)

Travel wardrobe capsule premium cold weather

Cold-weather women’s travel capsule wardrobe examples

When building a travel capsule wardrobe for cold weather trips, you can reuse a few of the items from your warm weather capsule. But, of course, you’ll need to swap in some warmer layers, a heavier jacket, and shoes that can stand up to long walks in the snow (not the beach).

Travel capsule wardrobe

While you can build a winter wardrobe for travel on a budget, prepare to make your shoes and coat your “big ticket” items. You may end up spending a little more on those than you did for your summer shoes and jacket:

  • Shoes : TOMS Boots ($100)
  • Shoes : Keds lace ups ($30 – 75)
  • Top : Patagonia cotton t-shirt ($39)
  • Top : Woolly t-shirt ($50)
  • Top : Everlane long-sleeve t-shirt ($16-28)
  • Bottoms : Uniqlo legging pants ($30)
  • Bottoms : prAna leggings ($75)
  • Sweater : Muji sweater ($40)
  • Sweater : Columbia sweater ($30-70)
  • Jacket : Uniqlo puffer jacket ($70 – $120)

Especially for winter wear, spending a little more will get you pieces that (usually) hold up better to the environment and last longer. It also means you can tap into some very stylish, technical outerwear brands like Alchemy Equipment and Betabrand , who offer options outside of your standard puffy jacket for cold weather travel.

  • Shoes : Sorel Boots ($120-300)
  • Shoes : Soludos Sneakers ($120-130)
  • Top : Western Rise t-shirt ($92)
  • Top : Everlane Japanese GoWeave Tee ($68)
  • Top : Woolly long-sleeve ($60)
  • Bottoms : ADAY Leggings ($100 – 135)
  • Bottoms : AT Slim Rivet Pants ($129)
  • Sweater : ADAY Like a Boss sweatshirt ($125)
  • Sweater : Patagonia crew ($99)
  • Jacket : Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket ($250 – 300)

Women’s brands to look at for building your travel capsule wardrobe

Style is so personal and every woman’s travel capsule wardrobe will look a little different. And while the above examples hopefully gave you some inspiration and help in visualizing a woman’s travel capsule wardrobe, you probably won’t use our exact recommendations.

To give you some direction on where to find great pieces when building your own collection, below are some of the best women’s shoe and clothing brands for travel:

Best for : Shoes

It’s no secret that TOMS slip-on sneakers are great for travel. Comfortable, small to pack, and affordable, their classic sneaker will keep your feet happy as you wander new destinations. Plus, it’s more fashionable than your typical sneaker, and doesn’t scream tourist (the only downside is that they lack arch support).

For business trips or travel where you need to look fancier than normal, they also have flats and low boots that are just as comfortable as their sneakers. Plus, with dozens of patterns to choose from, it’s an easy way to add a little color or flair to an otherwise basic outfit.

When I did Peace Corps, everyone I knew was obsessed with their Teva sandals   –  and it’s easy to see why. They’re sturdy, comfortable enough to hike in, pack down easily, and are simple in design. True, they’re not the most fashionable – though they are making a comeback – but they are one of the best-looking functional sandals out there.

Also, if you’re a Peace Corps volunteer or student, you can get an additional discount ( students get 10% , and “Pros” get 40% ).

Rothys-travel-shoes

Rothy’s

If you haven’t heard of Rothy’s yet, watch out. They may be taking over a city near you soon with their recycled, “just as comfortable as sneakers” flats and loafers. While on the pricier side, they live up to expectation in terms of comfort and quality. For travel, grab a pair in a basic color or opt for one of their more vibrant styles (bright yellow, anyone?) to make a statement.

How could you not love a shoe brand with the tagline, “inspired by our travels, made for yours”? Clearly, wanderlust-inspired shoe brand  Soludos  knows a thing or three about the kind of footwear our travel adventures require. Both comfortable and cute, Soludos’ sandals, mules, loafers, boots, and sneakers beautifully strike the balance between function and fashion. Just be sure to break ‘em in before your adventure.

Travel wardrobe capsule

Best for : Winter shoes

Like Teva, Sorel’s boots tend to lean more functional than fashionable – though they have some basic styles, like their low-heeled Chelsea boot , with a more street wear aesthetic. But when it comes to function, their sturdy, water and weatherproof boots are hard to beat. Their shoes will be your secret to spending a full day adventuring in even the shittiest winter weather. If you can afford the $100+ price tag, they’ll be a much-loved addition to your cold weather capsule.

Western Rise

Best for : Wool tops, pants

Both fashionable and functional, Western Rise ’s clothing sits between outdoor wear and streetwear. “We believe the outdoors starts right when you leave your house,” says co-founder Kelly Watters, and their clothes reflect that.

Their women’s tees and tanks are stylish enough for everyday wear (sans athleisure aesthetic), but have the performance of active wear. Same goes for their AT Slim Rivet pants (noted as the best women’s travel pants by Carry HQ). These slim-fitting pants are made of a breathable, water-resistant fabric, and, unlike any other pants you own, are equally ready for biking through a quick rain drizzle and a day at the office. They’re a great option if you can only pack one pair of pants.

Best for : Wool tops

Breathable in hot weather, but insulating in warm, merino wool layers are versatile and an ideal fabric for travel clothes. They’re also comfortable, soft, and don’t get smelly as quickly as synthetics or cotton – meaning you can go longer between washes.

For quality wool tees, tanks, and long-sleeves, Seattle-based Woolly is a wonderful brand to stock up on all things merino wool, especially if you’re on a budget. Compared to most other merino wool brands, they’re more affordable but don’t shirk on quality or performance.

Best for : Tops and bottoms

Every item from technical clothing brand  ADAY  fits beautifully within a travel capsule wardrobe. Well-made, functional, and modern in design, they work for any season and situation. Personally, I live in their Crop & Roll leggings , whose shiny fabric makes them look more fashion-forward than your standard leggings and comes with a generous-sized side pocket.

Further, the fabric on all of their items is breathable, soft, and impossible to wrinkle. After many wears and washes over the past 6 months, both the leggings and their futuristic-looking Like a Boss sweatshirt  have held their shape and color, making it worth the investment.

dish-and-duer-skinny-jeans

Best for : Bottoms (denim)

If you’ve ever tried to bike in super stiff denim, you know it doesn’t usually work out. DUER , however, has set out to solve this problem by giving us denim jeans and shorts that are more than a sturdy pair of good-looking pants. They’re actually comfortable enough to bike, walk, or run around town in. Which, obviously, is good news if you’re only able to bring one pair of travel jeans.

Best for : Jackets, bottoms, and dresses

Quirky, San Francisco-based Betabrand  first hit the scenes with their “yoga work pants”. Exactly what you’d think, they’re pants that look like work pants but feel like yoga pants — every office worker’s dream, right?

But in addition to giving office workers of the world pants they can do lotus pose in (perhaps in one of those ergonomic swivel chairs), Betabrand has designed some pretty cool jackets, dresses, and tops that work wonderfully for travel as well. What’s more, their designs tend to be more eccentric and colorful than some of the others on this list, making it a good place to find a statement piece for your collection that also stands up to the rigours of globetrotting.

Best for : Tops and dresses

There’s a lot of love for Everlane , so I wouldn’t be surprised if this brand of affordable and timeless apparel is already on your radar for closet staples. But perhaps less often talked about is how great their clothing, and specifically their Japanese Go-weave collection, is for travel.

The dresses and tops in this collection are made from a comfortable and wrinkle-resistant fabric that won’t get messed up in your luggage. The styles, like most of Everlane’s clothing, are simple and easy to dress up or down, giving them the versatility you need for one-bag travel.

prana travel clothing - pants and dress

Best for : Tops, bottoms, dresses, skirts

Although prAna sometimes gets pigeonholed as a yoga brand, they’re much more than that. Their line of versatile, comfortable, and sustainably made clothing is meant for any adventure – whether it’s travel or yoga, rock climbing or beach lounging.

With a focus on classic designs made from fabrics that can stand the rigours of any activity or adventure, prAna’s line of clothing has that fashion-function balance we want in travel clothes. When building a travel capsule wardrobe, they’re one of the better brands to look at for travel dresses, fashionable outerwear, and quality, sub-$100 leggings.

Best for : Jackets, outerwear

For a long time, outdoor and athleisure brands picked up the slack when women didn’t have a ton of options for travel clothing. But even with the influx of brands like ADAY and Everlane, sometimes mainstay outdoor brands like Columbia are still the best brand for the job.

This is especially true when it comes to warm down-jackets that are easy to pack down for cold-weather travel, or lightweight layers to block wind and rain in warm climates. With 80 years of experience creating outdoor apparel, Columbia knows how to make a damn good jacket. Plus, compared to other outdoor brands, Columbia can often be more affordable for budget travelers.

Best for : Jackets, sweaters, and tops

Like Columbia, Patagonia is an outdoor clothing brand but also a tried and trusted source for quality outerwear and clothes that can withstand the elements. From their ultra-lightweight Micro Puffs to waterproof rain shells, you can trust that Patagonia has you covered. Additionally, they have a standout collection of sweaters and sweatshirts, fleeces, and everyday tops–many of which have a vintage Californian aesthetic that pays homage to their Ventura roots.

Further, Patagonia has a strong commitment to sustainability, community, and their employees (my Ventura-raised dad always tells stories of Patagonia closing shop “because the surf was great and they wanted to let their employees get out and ride”) so you can always feel good buying from them.

Best for : Leggings and jackets

Whatever stereotypes you have of lululemon and their almost cult-like following, you have to admit: their clothes are well made. As an athletics brand, breathability, four-way stretch, sweat-wicking fabrics, and comfort are the core of every design. Style-wise, lululemon leans more towards athleisure than athletic, and their designs are stylish enough that you’d actually want to wear them in an everyday scenario.

For travel, they’re one of my go-to brands for cute jackets and (of course) a basic pair of leggings. And if you’re wondering if their yoga pants are worth the price point: yes, they are. I’ve worn mine at least once a week for the past three years, and brought them on countless trips. They’re only finally beginning to show signs of wear. All that lulu-love is well earned.

Best for : Sweaters

Japanese brand  Muji has received acclaim for their affordable travel pillows, eye masks, and travel slippers, but did you know they also make clothing? Although not specifically designed for travel, their clothing line is almost entirely basic, essential items you can pair with anything. In other words, perfect for a travel capsule wardrobe. When colder weather rolls around, keep an eye out for their affordable but well-made wool sweaters.

Uniqlo-down-jacket green

Best for : Wool tops, down jackets, pants

Uniqlo is like a godsend for merino-wool aficionados and down-jacket lovers on a budget. Like many of the other brands on this list, the Japanese brand Uniqlo creates fashionable streetwear essentials with technical fabrics – but at a much lower price point.

Compared to a more expensive brand, Uniqlo’s clothing will wear down faster (for example, my Uniqlo heattech leggings stretched out after six months, but my Patagonia ones lasted five years) but overall, their clothing – and their down jackets in particular – are surprisingly good considering the price point.

Will you try a travel capsule wardrobe?

Whether you currently travel with one bag or are trying to downsize, a thoughtful travel capsule wardrobe can help you travel with less while always having what you need. So let us know, will you try it? And if you’ve already attempted travel with a capsule wardrobe, what have your experiences been?

How to Pack a Minimalist Travel Capsule Wardrobe for all Seasons

February 24, 2021

Packing isn’t easy. However, choosing and planning a minimalist travel wardrobe can be even trickier. Finding clothes that can fit multiple purposes, suit the climates of your destinations, and take up minimal space in your backpack is not as straightforward as you’d think.

That’s where a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe comes in. You can deck out this capsule with versatile clothing for any condition or social setting. Building this out lies at the heart of minimalist travel . But More than that, it is the vital foundation towards the end goal of fitting everything into your minimalist travel backpack.

What’s a minimalist travel capsule wardrobe?

A minimalist capsule wardrobe is a trend that began in the 1970s . A capsule wardrobe has a small number of clothes, which are refreshed at the beginning of each season. By relying on staples you can wear year after year, you don’t need to forever spend money buying the latest style crazes.

However, what started off as within the home, has now moved to our backpacks. A minimalist travel wardrobe is an even more dialed-back version of the original idea. Minimalist travel outfits are versatile, easy to pack, and suitable for the seasons or climates where you’ll be visiting.

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe Tips

Before getting into what to pack, there are some general rules of thumb to follow when choosing your minimalist travel outfits:

  • Choose subdued colors - You want to pack clothes that can mix and match with one another. With that in mind, keep it simple. Black, Blue, Green and Gray all mix together very well. If you do still want a dash of color, add one or two more vibrant items.
  • Pack capsules for summer and winter - Is it possible to make a minimalist travel wardrobe for winter? Of course! In fact, these don’t have to be too different. For instance, the t-shirts can remain the same. You’ll just have to swap a few items out.
  • Choose 10 items or less - Whether you’re packing as a woman or a man, 10 is the golden number. Anymore than that and you’re probably overdoing it on accessories.

What to pack in a men’s minimalist travel wardrobe capsule?

Or alternatively, read our guide to packing a woman’s minimalist travel wardrobe here.

As mentioned above, the minimalist packing community seems to agree that 10 items is what to aim for in your wardrobe - 8 items of clothing and two pairs of shoes. Difficult, but not impossible.

Here’s a good basic list to get you on your way:

  • 1 dress shirt
  • 2 bottoms (pants, jeans or shorts)
  • 2 pairs of shoes

The list above is good for both spring or summer. However, this can easily be adapted for fall or winter. Our advice would be to switch out a t-shirt for an extra sweater (two t-shirts and two sweaters) and go for a more insulated jacket. The best kind for lightweight travel is a light, packable down-jacket as they fold up really easily. That being said, if you are traveling with thicker winter wear, save space by wearing those items when you’re traveling.

The list we’ve provided doesn’t mention unmentionables. We recommend bringing five pairs of underwear and socks. If you’re going longer than a week, be sure to do laundry!

One Bag Travel Clothing - Final Thoughts

It may seem wild to some people that one bag can fit all your travel clothing needs. However, minimalist travel is now increasingly popular, particularly with people who are regularly or constantly traveling.

Whatever the weather, a minimalist travel wardrobe allows travelers the freedom to get up and go as soon as possible while taking the stress out of packing. Moreover, switching a large suitcase for a more durable travel bag gives you greater comfort and ease on the road.

Stop overpacking and travel light on your next warm weather vacation! Let me show you how to create a minimalist travel wardrobe for a warm weather vacation. Then you can truly enjoy your trip and not stress about the details of what to pack or what to wear.

How to create a minimalist travel wardrobe

Whether you are going on a five, seven, or ten day vacation, this twenty piece travel wardrobe will have plenty of outfit possibilities for every occasion (mostly casual, but a few dressy options too) for a warm weather vacation.

best minimalist travel wardrobe

You don’t need as much as you think

Have you ever gone on a trip and only worn half of what you packed? I know, I am guilty of this too! Think about it… all of those un-worn pieces mean more to unpack when you arrive, more decisions to make about how/when to where them, more things to repack to come home. I say, keep it simple & only pack key basics that are versatile and can be re-worn several different ways.

Make a list of the things you will be doing on your trip

Then you can plan specific outfits for what you will be doing ( going to the beach, dinners out, sight seeing, activities, etc). Thinking ahead through these details will make packing for yourself, and your family a breeze. Not to mention it will help make getting dressed on your trip simple & stress free.

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe: Step-by-Step Guide to Selecting The Perfect Color Palette For Any Trip!

in Personal Style , Travel Style on 02/20/24

Are you ready to rock that minimalist travel wardrobe like a boss? Picture this: exploring the world with nothing but the essentials by your side. And you know how it starts? With choosing the right colors! Yep, it’s not only about the pieces you bring, but about the colors you choose.

So, we’re diving straight into the fun part – selecting the perfect color palette for any trip. So, get ready and let’s chat about how to make your travel wardrobe pop with just the right hues!

Ready To Learn About Crafting A Minimalist Travel Wardrobe? Let’s Choose The Right Colors!

Why Is It Important To Select The Right Colors?

By sticking to a cohesive color palette, you can create a minimalist travel wardrobe where you can mix and match everything effortlessly. Packing pieces that are versatile means fewer items to bring, less time spent agonizing over outfit choices, and more space in your luggage for souvenirs!

Bonus points for saving money in unnecessary baggage fees and the dreaded phrase no woman wants to say out loud:

“I have nothing to wear!”

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe: How To Choose The Right Colors!

Where To Start? 3 Questions To Ask Yourself:

1️⃣ When are you visiting? Seasons and weather are super important! Different colors absorb and reflect light differently, affecting your body temperature. Lighter colors like whites and pastels can help keep you cool in hot climates, while darker shades like navy and black can provide warmth in cooler temperatures.

By selecting colors that are in line with seasonal trends, you can stay stylish and on-trend wherever you go. Plus, colors have a psychological impact on our mood and emotions. Seasonally appropriate colors can evoke the vibe of the time of year. Here are some ideas:

❄️ Winter: plum, navy, red, gray, metallic and fair isle.

🌸 Spring: all the pastels, watercolor prints, stripes and florals.

☀️ Summer: all the happy vibrant colors, nautical stripes, gingham and fun prints.

best minimalist travel wardrobe

🍁 Fall: rust orange, mustard, beige & browns, olive green, burgundy, plaid and animal print.

*basic neutrals are for every season*

2️⃣ Where are you going? Why does it matter?

  • Are you going to the jungle, beach, desert or snow-capped mountains? Choosing colors that go with the landscape can create stunning visual contrasts in your photos!
  • Just like any other place, different destinations have their own fashion trends and preferences. If you’re trying to blend in with the local fashionistas, do a little research about local trends.
  • Let’s be real – a lot of people love those Insta-worthy travel photos! Considering the color palette of your destination can help you plan outfits that complement the scenery and make for stunning pics!

*I’m not your girl for beautiful photoshoots at a destination. If you want to plan your outfits to match the location, the best way to find ideas is to look for Instagram hashtags. Simply search for the destination name plus the following words/phrases: photoshoot – photo spots – best photo spots – instagrammable etc. You get the point ;)

3️⃣ Additional things to consider:

  • What do you already have in your closet? This is so important! Most of the time, you don’t need to shop for new things. Please look inside your closet first, then decide.
  • Do you sweat a lot? Are you bothered by sweating? I’m going to be real here. I use natural deodorant so I sweat. And guess what? I know it’s natural, but I really don’t like it. And that’s why black is one of my favorite colors to travel with!
  • Are you a mess when eating? Traveling with small kiddos? Practicality plays a role in color selection too. Darker colors like black or navy can hide stains and dirt better than lighter hues. Printed pieces are also great to hide stains :)

How To Do It? Step By Step Guide:

You will start taking out some pieces out of your closet and put them on your bed or wherever you can visualize all of them together.

Step one – Pick 3 neutrals or base colors :

Most of your pieces will fall in this category. This is the foundation of your travel wardrobe. Here you are just going to focus on selecting 3 colors. So go ahead and take out tops, pants, shorts, dresses, sweaters, etc. Don’t worry about the quantities, but also don’t go crazy here because that means more work later 😂

👉🏻 Examples of neutrals are: black, white, beige, dark green, brown, navy and gray.

By building your outfits around neutral tones, you’ll create a minimalist travel wardrobe that’s versatile and can be mixed and matched with ease.

Step two – Pick 2 pop of colors and 2 prints:

I wouldn’t go too crazy here. Just think mostly about tops, skirts and dresses here. Keep in mind that these have to match most of the neutral colors you picked on step one.

👉🏻 Examples of versatile printed pieces are: any kind of striped piece, florals, fun prints, leopard prints, etc. (remember to think about the seasonal prints I mentioned above)

Style tip: when choosing printed pieces make sure they match. For example, if you have stripes and florals make sure they have at least one color in common. Here’s an easy way to visualize it ⬇️

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe: How To Choose The Right Colors!

Step three – Separate tops, bottoms and dresses and stack them together in piles of the same color:

At this point, you only have 3 neutral colors, 2 pops of colors and 2 prints. At least you have narrowed things down by color, but now it’s time select the actual pieces you’re bringing:

This step is crucial to realize if you’re overpacking. This is where you will notice “oh I have 3 black pants”. I know, it’s like I’m there with you right?

Here are the actual quantities you need:

  • Tops: 11 total (includes sweaters too!)
  • Bottoms: 6 (includes pants, shorts, skirts)

👉🏻 This is what I actually packed for 6 months of travel in a carry-on bag!

Your personal comfort and preferences matter too! If you feel most confident and happy in bright, bold colors, go for it! Ultimately, your travel wardrobe should reflect your individual style and make you feel comfortable and at ease wherever you go!

Step four – Pick your accessories:

Here’s where I like to select printed, statement or colorful pieces. My favorite accessories are:

  • Statement Earrin gs
  • Neck Sca rves

Feel free to choose the ones that match your style! Necklaces, rings, bracelets, belts. Whatever you like, as long as it matches your outfits and it doesn’t take a lot of space.

Step five – Pick your shoes:

I only travel with 3 or 4 pairs of shoes at a time (including gym shoes). These have been my go-to since September 2021:

  • White Leather Snea kers
  • Waterproof Birkensto cks OR Everyday Birkenstocks
  • Trail Runner s
  • Flat Leather Sandal s

👟Download this guide! It will help you pick your top shoes for travel no matter the trip. Keep it forever, and you’ll never overpack shoes again!

Can’t state this enough, all of these pieces have to match! This is a very poor quality photo of how I make sure each piece is worth packing. In this case I’m seeing how many outfits I can create with the green floral skirt:

Left: I make sure it goes well with a few of my tops, all my shoes and jacket in case I need to layer.

Right: An example of one of the outfits :)

👉🏻 Download this FREE guide so you can do this too! It’s basically a step by step guide inspired by this blog post. You’ll be able to always select the perfect color palette for ANY trip you take in the future! 👈🏻

My Most Versatile Color Palette For A Perfect Minimalist Travel Wardrobe:

Because I travel full time, usually for 6 months periods and almost always to warm places, I don’t have the luxury to always pick the perfect color palette for each destination. But this is what has worked for me over the past 3 years:

  • 3 base colors: dark green, black and white. (8 tops, 4 bottoms)
  • 4 printed pieces: black and white stripes, flowers (2 tops, 2 bottoms)
  • Other essentials: 1 chambray or linen shirt, 1 LBD or other neutral color.
  • Pop of colors: headbands, statement earrings and maybe one top or dress. (it varies)
  • Shoes: 4 pairs, including gym shoes.

I only pack one dress. Instead of more dresses, I now travel with a top/bottom set, like this one ⬇️

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe: How To Choose The Right Colors!

I love it because I can make it look like a dress, but I can also style both top and bottom separately in any way I want! (I’ll share that on a separate blog post soon)

Styling Tips To Maximize Every Single Piece You Pack:

I basically share these tips in all of my blog posts, but they’re really that important. Thanks to these, I’ve been able to create even more outfits from a small carry-on bag!

  • Wear tops and bottoms that are the same color. This way you can fake a dress, jumpsuit or romper.
  • Instead of packing too many dresses, try packing sets instead. One or two will do it. One neutral and one printed.
  • Don’t forget about versatile pieces. A pashmina that doubles up as head scarf and a beach towel. Or my favorite: a linen button down shirt that you can wear open with a tank top/t-shirt, tie around your waist, layer with a sweater and even as a beach cover up. This is one of the best pieces you can travel with!
  • Try things on before you pack them! I have brought pants than don’t fit way too many times LOL – make sure everything fits!

How to Travel with Minimal Clothes: Mastering the Art of Packing Light

best minimalist travel wardrobe

We've all been there before...you're standing in front of your open suitcase, staring at the pile of clothes on your bed. You start to feel overwhelmed as you realize that there's no way all of these items will fit in your luggage.

It's time to question if you really need all of these pieces and wonder if there's a better way to travel with less . Traveling with a minimalist mindset can not only make packing easier but also make for a more enjoyable trip.

Traveling with minimal clothes means packing only the essentials and leaving behind anything that isn't necessary. It allows for easier maneuverability while exploring new destinations and eliminates the stress of overpacking.

However, it can be daunting to know where to start when it comes to minimizing your wardrobe for travel purposes. As minimalist travelers , we feel packing with minimal clothes while traveling is the way to go but it does take some work.

Choose Versatile Clothing Items

When it comes to packing light, versatility is key. You'll be ready for any adventure when you pack versatile clothing that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits.

By choosing items that can be dressed up or down, you'll have the flexibility to switch things up as needed. Versatility comes down in our opinion to layers and how everything works together.

For example, a simple t-shirt dress can be paired with sneakers for a casual day out, or dressed up with heels and statement jewelry for an evening event.

Since we exercise while traveling, we also look for versatile items that work for the gym but also look nice with other items for going out. We make sure each clothing item serves a dual purpose.

Choosing the right fabrics for minimal packing is also important. Look for materials that are lightweight and wrinkle-resistant, such as cotton or linen blends.

These fabrics will take up less space in your luggage and won't require ironing upon arrival at your destination. Additionally, consider investing in clothing items with multi-functional features. A convertible maxi skirt that can also be worn as a dress or a scarf that doubles as a headband are great examples of pieces that serve more than one purpose.

best minimalist travel wardrobe

Plan Outfits in Advance

While this may not be for everyone, planning out your outfits in advance can help minimize the number of clothes you need to bring on your travels.

By mixing and matching items and coordinating colors, you can create multiple outfits with just a few pieces. To start, choose a color scheme for your trip. We are always preferential to neutrals like black, white, and grey but you could also pick something more vibrant as long as the colors coordinate.

Once you have your color palette set, pick out clothing items that match those colors and can easily be mixed and matched. For example, pack a pair of jeans that can be worn with different tops or dress up with a blouse for an evening out.

Next, think about layering. Bringing layers allows you to add warmth or remove it depending on the weather.

A lightweight cardigan or scarf takes up minimal space but can transform an outfit from casual to elegant. Additionally, consider packing versatile minimalist shoes like sneakers that are comfortable for walking during the day but also work well dressed up at night.

Accessories can be a big help because these small items take up little space in your luggage but can change the look of an entire outfit. Remember to pack them in a packing cube to keep them organized and easy to find.

best minimalist travel wardrobe

How to Organize with Minimal Clothes

You want to make sure your clothes stay organized and easy to find while maximizing space in your luggage. That's where packing cubes and compression bags come in handy.

These nifty tools keep your clothes neatly packed together, making it easy to grab what you need without having to dig through a messy pile of clothes. Plus, they compress bulky items like jackets or sweaters, saving precious space for other essentials like shoes or toiletries.

Kelsey likes to divide her packing cubes by item type so she can grab what she needs quickly. So all her tights are in one location, dressier clothes in another packing cube, and so on.

However, there are other techniques you can use to take organization a step further. One of these is color coordination, which involves grouping clothes in the same color family or pattern together. This makes it easier to mix and match outfits without having to dig through your luggage.

Additionally, adopting proper folding techniques can help minimize wrinkles and make finding specific items much easier when unpacking.

Pack Essential Accessories

Accessorizing smart is key when traveling with minimal clothes. Not only do accessories add a touch of personality to your outfit, but they also take up very little space in your luggage.

Don't forget to grab those must-have extras to spice up your minimalist wardrobe when you're packing for your next trip. When it comes to minimalist fashion, there are a few essential accessories that should be on every traveler's list.

First and foremost, a good pair of sunglasses is a must-have item.  They not only protect your eyes from the sun but also elevate any outfit.

Phil loves Goodr and Kelsey will even get them sometimes too as they have a ton of cool styles to choose from. But really you can't go wrong with any pair of sunglasses that are stylish enough to pack with you.

A scarf can serve multiple purposes such as a cover-up for chilly planes or as an accessory to dress up an outfit. Jewelry is another way to add some flair to your minimalist travel wardrobe without taking up too much space. Consider bringing one statement piece like a bold necklace or earrings that can be worn with multiple outfits.

A watch is also practical and stylish, making it the perfect accessory for any traveler. We personally have Garmin watches as we try to work out while traveling and having a good looking watch that doubles as an exercise watch is the exact kind of double duty we love to get out of our items.

Don't forget about other helpful items like hats and belts. A hat can protect you from the sun while adding style points to your outfit, while a belt can cinch in loose clothing or add definition to an oversized garment.

These little items help change up an outfit for more variety without taking up too much space. Its a. perfect win-win.

best minimalist travel wardrobe

Wear Your Bulkiest Items on the Plane

One popular and easier strategy you can use to keep your luggage light and comfortable is to wear your bulkiest items on the plane. This might mean putting on your heaviest coat (like Phil in his Pea Coat that Kelsey convinced him to get) or sweater before boarding.

Not only will this save space in your luggage, but it'll also help keep you warm and cozy during the flight. If you're worried about getting too hot once you're on board, take off the bulky layers and stow them in the overhead compartment.

We also wear our bigger shoes such as hiking boots instead of gym shoes when traveling to give us more room in our luggage. Another option is to layer up with lightweight clothing and save some space in your bag that way.

Choose versatile pieces that can be worn together or separately depending on the temperature. For example, pack a few t-shirts and long-sleeved shirts that can be layered under a sweater or jacket.

When choosing what to wear on a long flight, prioritize comfort above all else. Look for soft fabrics that won't irritate your skin or bunch up during the flight. Opt for loose-fitting pants or leggings instead of tight jeans, which can become uncomfortable after hours of sitting in one position.

The Minimalist Benefits of Traveling with Less

Embracing simplicity in your packing choices can lead to a more refined and elegant travel experience, allowing you to focus on the destination rather than the material possessions. Minimalism is not just about having less stuff, but it's also about creating space for meaningful experiences and connections.

When traveling with minimal clothes, you'll be surprised at how liberating it feels to have fewer options and less clutter. The benefits of minimalism go beyond just packing lighter.

You'll save time and money by not having to check-in luggage or pay extra fees for overweight bags. Plus, when you only have a few outfits to choose from, it becomes easier to mix and match items, making your wardrobe more versatile.

This approach also allows you to be more mindful of what you truly need versus want when shopping for new clothes. When traveling, pack clothing items that can easily transition from day to night or layering pieces that can be worn in multiple ways.

Ultimately, embracing minimalism is about simplifying your life and prioritizing experiences over material possessions. By incorporating this mindset into your packing choices, you'll not only save space in your suitcase but also create room for memorable adventures and authentic connections with people along the way.

So next time you're getting ready for a trip, consider leaving behind the excess baggage and embracing the freedom of minimalist travel .

Minimalist Travel – Guide to Success From a Happy Traveler

Travel writer Rick Steves once said that there are two kinds of people: those who pack light, and those who wish they had. But what is more stressful before a trip out of town than figuring out what all to pack?

Minimalist travel involves planning and packing lightly, with only the most needed items, to help ensure easy travels and great experiences. There is minimal, ultra-minimal, and extreme minimal travel, each with a unique approach to travelers’ needs, and all aimed at living happier experiences.

When packing for a trip it is easy to get overwhelmed with the what-ifs and just in cases. What if it rains? I should bring a nice outfit just in case I meet the love of my life. But 9/10 times you just end up with a heavy suitcase and a raincoat you never wear. By planning ahead about what is absolutely necessary to pack and weeding out the what-if and just in case choices, you can get better at minimalist travel.

What Does Minimalist Travel Mean?

Minimalist travel is a form of travel where a person only packs material possessions that are absolutely necessary. This frees up space and weight and mental energy, allowing them more freedom to enjoy their travels and be present in the moment in the places they are visiting.

Plane flying high in the sky - Minimalist Travel - Gone Minimal

Ultra Minimalist Travel

Ultra minimalist travel, like minimalism travel, is the art of packing as little as possible to be able to explore your destination as easily and comfortably as possible. It involves including only the very most essential items for comfort and visiting.

Extreme Minimalist Travel

Extreme minimalist travel aims to fit all necessary belongings in one bag and mostly consists of sustainable and reusable goods. This is a “backpacker” type of approach. Since single bags can fit on most carry-ons on airplanes, buses, trains, and easily in cars, this method usually allows for the most flexibility and ease when traveling.

Here is a helpful video providing insights into one-bag travel:

How Do I Travel in a Minimalist Way?

Planning ahead is the key to traveling in a minimalist way. Often time over packing comes from impulse decisions and not giving yourself enough time to plan what you really need for your trip. Thus, having a good packing plan and ensuring the items one has each serve one or multiple important purposeds, helps ensure the objects can be minimal so the experiences can be great.

What Does a Minimalist Carry?

Minimalists carry only the necessities for their trip. They also carry a smaller bag- this essentially forces you to pack only what you can carry in the smaller bag and question what you need versus what you don’t. A couple changes of clothes, any medicine you take, comfortable shoes, toiletries, etc.

How Can I Pack Less Clothes for Travel?

Firstly, using a smaller bag or only a carry-on so you don’t have any choice but to pack light. Plan ahead as well, check what the weather will be for your trip so you know what clothes to pack based on the weather and what activities you’ll be doing.

Planning ahead is the key to traveling in a minimalist way.

How Do You Pack Minimalist for a Week?

Start with packing only half a week worth of clothes and limit the amount of shoes you pack. There are very few places you can travel that won’t have some kind of laundry facility. Plan what you’re going to pack in advance based on the weather, and what you plan on doing that way you can avoid packing anything “just in case.”

What Are the Most Forgotten Items When Traveling?

Phone chargers get forgotten at home often because we typically charge our phones before we leave and forget to pack them when we leave. Umbrellas are often forgotten as well, we sometimes think idealistically of vacation weather and pack based on what we hope the weather will be rather than what it really is.

How Do I Pack Minimal for a Vacation?

Pack what you know you will wear, and items of clothing that you can mix and match to make different outfits. Layout everything you plan on packing before packing it so it’s easier to sus out what is necessary and what is not.

Benefits of Minimalist Travel

Helpful insights:, minimalist travel gear.

While carrying fewer things is a key element of minimalist travel, having the right minimalist travel gear can help make that easier. Some items serve multiple purposes, have less weight, make packing easier, and make traveling faster. Let’s explore some of these helpful items.

Minimalist Travel Bag

There are many options for minimalist travel bags, should you choose to go with a larger bag for travel. What you’re looking for is enough space to carry your belongings without being so big that you end up overpacking. Having a travel bag can be good for longer stays, and if you don’t plan on moving around too much from city to city.

Some recommendations are:

Minimalist Travel Backpack

Backpacks are the ideal travel tool for short trips (under a couple weeks) especially if your trip entails city hopping or a lot of movement. It’s all the belongings you need that can be easily carried on your person at any and all times. Backpacks tend to have compartments and pockets that make carrying your phone and wallet not only easier but more accessible.

Some travel friendly backpacks are:

  • Transit Backpack
  • Smart Backpack
  • Osprey Backpacks

Best Minimalist Travel Wallet

When traveling, we tend to need more documents on our person. IDs, passports, different currencies. It’s important to have a wallet that works well to hold all your important papers while also being secure for wherever you might travel.

Recommended wallets:

  • Coffee Run Wallet
  • Lojel Travel Wallet
  • Bellroy Travel Wallet

Minimalist Travel Wardrobe

When packing your clothes, you want to keep in mind outfits that are versatile and practical. It’s good to prepare for the worst when it comes to the outfits you pack, but without proper planning that can quickly lead to overpacking. Check the weather, only bring a rain coat if it’s supposed to rain, and if you’re caught by a sudden downpour, no shame in stopping to buy an umbrella. There are many lists online for minimalist wardrobe choices such as this one and many others.

Minimalist Travel Shoes

What shoes you bring depends on what your trip entails. Only bring the shoes you know for a fact you will wear and the ones you do bring should be comfortable. Just like all your minimalist packing decisions, the shoes you wear should be consciously chosen based on your needs for travel. Though you don’t have to buy a new pair of shoes for every trip you take, here are some recommendations of good pairs:

  • Patnoflex Travel Shoes
  • Vivo Barefoot Shoes
  • Allbirds

Minimalist Travel Makeup

Your friends who wear makeup can tell you that it often takes up a lot of space, especially while traveling. There are a few solutions to the chaos that is traveling with makeup. The first thing to consider is what makeup you find absolutely necessary to your trip if any. SPF is always a must, no matter where you’re going. Full coverage foundation might not be necessary for snorkelling and a bold lip might get a little messed up during skiing. So based on the activities you plan on doing, plan accordingly with your makeup. There are also travel makeup kits made for the minimalist traveler like:

  • The Subtl Beauty Starter Pack
  • Bare Minerals Rescue Kit
  •  Loads Everyday MVPs

Minimalist Art for the Traveler

Once we’re back home, it’s nice to have things to look at, to inspire, and to remind us of the world around us. Minimalist art can help enhance out living spaces, and put beauty around us. We also might want art to be a part of our personal journey, by getting minimalist tattoos to represent places one has been, their growth, and the personal journey they’re traveling on.

Minimalist Travel Posters

If the aesthetics of minimalism are what attract you, then there are many options for minimalist art that you can bring home to remind you of your trip. It’s always best to purchase souvenirs from local artists, posters are no exception, but you can still help local artists with posters that remind you of your time. When traveling minimally, your bags have already been meticulously ordered so there likely isn’t a lot of room for souvenirs.

There are a couple things you can do! Firstly you can see if there are local artists in the area you’re visiting who sell their art online. That way you can support local artists and wait until you have the space to house their art. You can also check out online shops like Etsy for minimalist style posters of the places you’ve been.

Minimalist Travel Tattoo s

If you like permanent art displayed on your skin, tattoos can be a great souvenir for a trip. They don’t take up extra space like most souvenirs, and are a great reminder of a trip well travelled—if you can handle a little pain. Getting a small piece of ink in the places you visit can be a great record of the places you’ve been and you are helping local tattoo artists in their business.

Packing is usually the worst part of traveling, that and having to lug your heavy suitcase around a new city. This is why minimalist travel can be so helpful to travelers. All it takes is a little research and a little planning before hand.

What should you not forget when traveling.

The most common items forgotten while traveling are socks and phone chargers. Luckily these items can be bought pretty much anywhere in the world. Always remember your passport or ID, currency for the place you’re going and a list of phone numbers of people you can call in case you make a habit of forgetting your charger.

What Is a Minimalist Packing Party?

A minimalist packing party is a gathering or party where a group of people pack up their homes as if they were moving out. You have one day to pack up everything in your home and then when you unpack everything you get to decide what is really necessary for you to own and what you can give away.

If you’re not a minimalist regularly, you tend to become one when you travel. The ideal jetsetter style is simple and chic. Basic patterns and solid colors can be perfect for travels, and many of these timeless pieces can be used for years.

Many minimalist clothing styles are based on standard pieces that you may already own, but if you don’t, they would be a worthwhile investment.

In order for these pieces to work flawlessly, make sure to get them tailored to fit – no scrunched up fabric at your ankles or blouses with bulging buttons. Good, properly fitting undergarments also help create a seamless look.

Items such as a classic white button down, solid black pants, a little black dress and a trench-style coat are simple and sophisticated and go with almost anything. They can be worn and re-worn throughout many trips.

The secret to traveling light is to  use packing cubes to help you organize and even compress your belongings to maximize your space.

Airport style can be easy and simple with a classic white blouse, black pants and black flats. This would be an ideal outfit for a weekend break or a business trip.

The outfit is crisp and clean and would be appropriate for almost any occasion. You’re ready to step off the plane and start sightseeing instantly.

Presentable and Classic

With this type of style, you don’t really have to be concerned with underdressing or overdressing. You look classic, without having to worry about standing out.

A simple black dress is perfect for a range of weather, and you can layer a pair of black merino wool tights as the temperature drops. A trench coat is great for shoulder seasons (especially rainy springs), and pairs with any color including black and white.

Heading to the beach, you can’t go wrong with a feminine black one-piece that is flattering and provides just the right coverage. All you’ll need is some sunblock and a simple fold-up canvas bag that fits in any suitcase.

A button-up shirt dress will work well for a cover-up and can be used over pants or with a belt as another clothing option on the trip. You won’t need to bring a lot of separate items if you’re going on a simple beach vacation.

Keep it simple when sightseeing with a comfy t-shirt, pants, flats and a cross-body bag big enough for your guidebook, camera and bottled water. An oversized scarf is great to keep with you for evenings or when you’re wandering the corridors of a chilly cathedral.

Avoid a sloppy appearance or looking overly casual by choosing quality items with a tailored fit!

Beauty Tips

When you’re outfits are simple, you can keep your beauty routine simple as well. These looks don’t require a lot of bells and whistles, so make-up essentials such as lip gloss, mascara and a tinted moisturizer work great.

Of course you can bring other items, but I would recommend determining your bare essentials and just packing those. With this minimalist travel wardrobe, you won’t need a whole lot to look chic.

Unpacking the Magic of Minimalist Travel Packing: A How-to Guide for the Modern Wanderer

D o you ever find yourself hauling an overloaded suitcase up a flight of hotel stairs, panting and wishing you'd packed less? You're not alone. According to a survey conducted by OnePoll in 2019, 62% of travelers admitted to overpacking, with 34% saying they never wear all the clothes they bring. It's time to shed the extra weight and embrace the art of minimalist travel packing.

  • Less luggage means more freedom, ease, and enjoyment during your travel
  • The essentials-only packing list for minimalists
  • Expert tips and techniques for packing light
  • Benefits of minimalist packing for your travel and overall lifestyle

Lightening the Load: The Appeal of Minimalist Packing

Traveling light isn't just about saving on baggage fees. It's about simplifying your journey, enhancing your experiences, and adopting a mindful approach to travel. As Yogi Bhajan rightly stated, "Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light."

Packing Like a Pro: The Minimalist's Essentials

When it comes to minimalist travel packing, less is definitely more. However, what does 'less' actually look like? Here are some essentials that should make it to your packing list:

  • A capsule wardrobe comprising versatile pieces
  • Travel-size toiletries
  • A small bag of electronics like a phone, charger, and adapter
  • Important travel documents
  • A reusable water bottle and snacks

The Science Behind Packing Less

It's no secret that packing light is a game-changer for the modern traveler. Rick Steves, a renowned travel expert, articulates this belief, emphasizing that "packing light is essential for happy, hassle-free travel."

Packing Techniques for the Minimalist Traveler

Once you have your essentials sorted, the next challenge is to fit everything in your bag efficiently. Here's where packing techniques come into play:

  • Roll your clothes instead of folding them
  • Use packing cubes to organize your items
  • Wear your heaviest clothes on the plane to save space

Benefits of Minimalist Travel Packing

Adopting minimalist packing habits can revolutionize your travel experiences. Some of the benefits include:

  • Increased mobility
  • Less stress about lost or stolen items
  • Saving money on baggage fees
  • Greater focus on experiences rather than possessions

The Minimalist's Guide to Clothing

Packing clothing for a trip tends to be one of the most challenging aspects of minimalist travel packing. You want to look stylish , yet you also need to consider comfort, practicality, and varying weather conditions. Start with your absolute essentials, such as underwear and socks. Next, consider your activities. If you're hiking, pack appropriate gear. If you're dining at fancy restaurants, pack a versatile outfit that can be dressed up or down. Aim for a capsule wardrobe: choose clothing items in neutral colors that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. Opt for lightweight fabrics that can be layered. Always remember that it's better to do a quick wash halfway through your trip than to lug around excess clothing.

A Deep Dive into Toiletries

Toiletries are another area where travelers tend to overpack. A key principle of minimalist packing is to embrace travel-size items. Most toiletries like shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste can be bought in travel sizes or transferred into smaller containers. Another tip is to embrace multi-purpose items. For example, a bar of soap can be used for washing your body, face, and even your clothes in a pinch. Such mindful approaches not only save space but also promote sustainable travel practices.

The Art of Letting Go

The cornerstone of minimalist travel packing is the art of letting go. It's about releasing the fear of "what if I need this" and trusting that you'll be able to navigate any situation that arises. Embrace the journey with an open mind, carrying with you the essence of Yogi Bhajan's wisdom, "Travel light, live light, spread the light, be the light". It's time to step out of your comfort zone, lighten your load, and embark on your travel adventure. Minimalist packing is not just about the stuff you leave behind; it's about the experiences and memories you make along the way.

Wrapping Up

By following these steps, you can transform your travel experience from a burdensome task into a joyful adventure. It's time to ditch the excess baggage and embrace the liberating art of minimalist packing.
