If you want to save money during your trip around the City of Angels, consider some of the following bargains.

Los Angeles Tourist Passes

If you’re planning to enjoy several different activities and attractions in Los Angeles, you could save a lot of money by using a tourist pass.

Most Los Angeles tourist passes include at least one bus tour, and some actually offer more than one of the services listed on this post.

The following Los Angeles bus tours are included with at least one tourist pass:

  • Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tours
  • Starline Celebrity Homes Tour
  • Starline Movie Location Tour
  • Star Track Hollywood Bus Tour

There are three different types of pass that include LA bus tours: all-inclusive and flex passes.

If you’re looking to save the most, an all-inclusive pass includes admission to dozens of activities for a specific amount of time (1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days).

A flex pass allows you to pay one flat price for a set number of attractions (3, 4, 5, or 7) that you can visit over the course of 30 days.

While this service isn’t as limited by time restrictions, it’s also a bit more difficult to save money.

Even at its best, you’ll be paying more than $31 per attraction, so it wouldn’t make sense for cheaper activities.

Here are a few of the more popular activities and attractions included with these services:

  • Universal Studios Hollywood
  • TCL Chinese Theater Tour
  • Sony Pictures Studio Tour
  • Six Flags Magic Mountain
  • Warner Bros Studio Tour
  • Dolby Theatre Tour
  • Madame Tussauds
  • Knott’s Berry Farm
  • Hollywood Museum
  • Grammy Museum

Depending on which tourist pass you choose, you could save anywhere between 10% - 50% off ticket prices.

For more details, please read our post covering Los Angeles tourist passes .

Combo Packages

In addition to tourist passes, there are also several combo deals which include Los Angeles bus tours.

These saving opportunities combine two or more activities for one flat price, allowing you to save some money on a few fun things to do.

If you’re interested in a hop-on-hop-off bus tour, check this list of combo packages available with those services.

Los Angeles and Hollywood in particular are very popular tourist cities, so naturally there are going to be plenty of tour companies available. Unfortunately, the experience between all of these companies won’t always be of the same value. In fact, choosing the right bus tour can make or break a trip, especially if you’ll only be in town for a short time.

We’ve taken great care and consideration to plot the absolutely most perfect and enjoyable Los Angeles bus tour experience imaginable, but you don’t have to take just   our   word for it. Please allow us to explain exactly how all this came to be.

Starting & Ending Location

best tour bus los angeles

Los Angeles is a large, sprawling city with sights and sounds to explore all over the place. Many of the competitor tour companies have elected to begin and end their tours right on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This is convenient for the tour company because it’s easier to operate, but this isn’t the ideal situation for someone looking to spend a day in Los Angeles as a tourist for a few reasons.

  • The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a great place to take photos and experience the stars, grab some souveniers, etc. Unfortunately, after about an hour on the walk of fame people are ready to move onto the next thing, so it’s best not to be left on the Walk of Fame after your tour has ended because you’ll run out of stuff to do pretty quickly.
  • The beaches and beach towns of Los Angeles are a phenomenal part of the city and an absolute must-do for visitors, but it isn’t all that great spending an allotted amount of time at the beach. When you’re at the beach   you need to be on your own time.   For this reason, we’ve decided to start and end our tours right next to the Santa Monica Pier so that people can see everything they want to see on the tour, and then retreat back to the beach after the tour has ended to enjoy Los Angeles to the fullest.

Not only do we highly recommend starting your tour with us in Santa Monica rather than on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, we also highly advise that you look into getting a hotel in the Santa Monica area: Check out our blog post on   choosing the best hotel in Los Angeles   for more info.

Tour Guides

best tour bus los angeles

The Tour Guide is truly the most important part of the experience. Yes, the city of Los Angeles is beautiful, unique, and sought after worldwide, but experiencing it all through the eyes of an inexperience or improperly trained tour guide can really mess things up. Even worse, some folks are actually lied to and shown things that aren’t actually what they claim to be.

When you’re riding with Surf City Tours, you can rest assured that you will be riding only with the most experienced, professional, and knowledgeable tour guides in the city of Los Angeles. We maintain a multi-cultured and amazing pool of guides that undergo regular quality checks and commit towards continuing to update and improve their knowledge on all things Hollywood.

Vehicle For Your Bus Tour

best tour bus los angeles

If you’re talkin’ about bus tours, the bus itself is obviously a pretty critical component, especially in the city of Los Angeles when the weather is beautiful year-round but the sun doesn’t stop, either.

Our vehicles are open-air, customized tour buses that allow for 360-degrees of photo opportunities while inside. We’ve installed custom canopies overhead to protect you from the sun, but left the vehicles open-air to take advantage of the perfect weather. The buses also look pretty rad, so you’ll be cruising the streets of LA in style with a full view of it all.

WARNING: Some tour companies offer open-air vehicles but don’t bother to install any sort of canopy overhead. If you’d rather pass on the sunburn, but still say yes to open-air, Surf City has got you   covered. Literally.

Highlights Included & Tour Route

best tour bus los angeles

There are quite a few different ways to tour Los Angeles. Some companies will try to sell you a tour of a bunch of things that you might not be interested in seeing to make the tour as long as possible, or even spend some time sending you on what they call a “short loop” while they wait to sell additional seats on your bus and for the real tour to begin. **If you plan on visiting the Walk of Fame on your own and are approached by a salesperson be careful of this trap**

At Surf City Tours, our tours depart on time every day and the route has been carefully curated to provide a perfect balance of celebrity homes, TV & film locations, studios, landmarks, and other unique sights of the city. We don’t show you too much of one thing at a time, and our route covers the most ground in the least time with about 24 miles of world-famous Los Angeles road, dozens and dozens of celebrity homes and the countless Hollywood treasures you’ll see before the 5.5 hours and 4 stops has ended on our Perfect Los Angeles Tour.

Celebrity Homes You’ll See

best tour bus los angeles

We already mentioned this earlier in the guide, but we’ll say it again. Don’t get fooled by shady tour companies that show you homes that might’ve been owned by a celebrity 20 years ago. Surf City Tours keeps our celebrity homes up to date and interesting with a perfect mix of new and old celebrity mansions on all of our tours with unique appeals and interesting stories behind each and every door.

Safety & COVID Preparedness

Socially Distant, Safe Tour vehicles

Surf City Tours has truly gone above and beyond to prepare our vehicles and staff to resume operations as COVID numbers in Los Angeles continue to move downwards and city ordinances and sectors continue to open.

First, our vehicles are completely open-air so you’ll never be in an enclosed space at any point during the trip. We’ve also brought in the big guns with a special team that comes in to sanitize our vehicles with enormous sanitizing fog cannons (no joke!) every night after the tours have ended. Tour guides sanitize touch points frequently throughout the tours, and plenty of hand sanitizer is made available on board every tour.

If that doesn’t sound safe enough for you, we’ve even customized our vehicles further to install plexiglass partitions between the tour guide and the rest of the bus, as well as between each and every row. And the vehicles are still completely open air.

The Conclusion: Surf City Tours is the Best!

Yes, so as you can see it is clear that Surf City Tours is truly the best Los Angeles Bus Tour, and there are plenty of reasons to point at as to why. If you’re interested in taking a tour of Hollywood check out our Perfect Los Angeles Tour. Or, if you’d rather keep it beachside and check out Malibu and all the sweet celebrity mansions, hangouts, and history you should be visiting the Malibu Tour page.

Golden State Getaway: 9-Day California Calling Tour to Los Angeles, Yosemite, and San Francisco

Great experience with a fun group of people. You get to see local sights and bars you might not run into travelling by yourself. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the areas we visited. There are plenty of activities to choose from with flexibility on what you want to do on some days. However, the method of getting around with public transportation in some areas (especially in the LA metro) does not feel safe. This would have been better if we had a more secure method of transportation and we could have spent more time in the locations rather than catching buses and trains. Overall though, it was a great experience and had a good time.

Golden West Adventure Tour

Golden West Adventure

I picked the Golden West Adventure tour and it was simply amazing. We stayed in great hotels and hostels, the other people on board (over 40 people!) were all fun to cope with. Besides the price of the tour, you have to be prepared to spend additional ~$600 for other stuff, like visiting Alcatraz prison in San Francisco or a $250 flight in a helicopter above the Grand Canyon. Did I mention wonderful shows in Las Vegas? Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Hell yeah! If I were to decide on the best trip I ever had, it would be this one. But don't get me wrong, major factors were the people aboard the bus in which you traveled and I'm not talking now about the other travelers. I'm talking about our driver and our fabulous, amazing, lovely, charming and most important funny! - Tour Director Linda. Without her, I would drop the star count to 4, but she's a start herself, so a full 5/5 for Cosmos for having me experience a great time with them. Definitely recommend! Adam S.

Magnificent West – 8 days Tour

Magnificent West – 8 days

Was er mehrmals erwähnte. Gesamt lässt sich die Reise aber empfehlen.

Las Vegas, Sedona & Monument Valley – 5 days

We really enjoyed this tour. The days on the bus are long as the distances travelled are vast but the places we saw made it all worth it. The coach was very comfortable, the tour was well organised and our guide Lorenzo & bus driver, Ozzie, kept us informed (about where we were going, an history of the places and what to expect next) and entertained throughout. The hotel accommodation was perfect for our needs. Definitely a tour worth doing. Family of four (including 2 teens)

Gold Experience 7 days Tour

Gold Experience 7 days

In April 2020 — only a month or so into the COVID-19 pandemic — my wife and I were running out of things to do. The novelty of Zoom calls with friends was wearing off. We’d watched lots of movies and TV. We were itching to get out of our apartment, but with the virus still raging, we couldn’t risk being around other people. Then we had an idea: Why not go for a drive?

You are reading The Wild newsletter

Sign up to get expert tips on the best of Southern California's beaches, trails, parks, deserts, forests and mountains in your inbox every Thursday

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

For our first trip, we drove the length of Little Tujunga Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest. After that, we were hooked. In the ensuing months, we crisscrossed the Santa Monica Mountains and made trips into Los Padres National Forest and beyond.

A roadmap open on a table

My wife bought me a California road atlas, and it became part of our scenic drive ritual: We’d consult its pages for inspiration, looking for two-lane roads and state highways that squiggled through mountain ranges or meandered through deserts. After returning home, I’d highlight our route. Four years after our first drive, the atlas is full of highlights documenting our travels — and there’s still a lifetime’s worth of backroads we haven’t covered yet.

No matter where we go, each drive gives me a deeper appreciation for the incredible range of landscapes in Southern California. And these journeys have led to many rewarding discoveries, from out-of-the-way diners to new trailheads for hiking and biking.

A mountain path winds around mountains in the distance

If you’re tired of visiting the same places, it’s time to hit the road. These two trips — all within a three-hour drive of the city — will get you started.

Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument This route traverses winding mountain roads through Los Padres and spits you out near the southern entrance to Carrizo Plain — a vast preserve of native grassland and a hotspot for wildflowers (at least on some years ) and birdwatching . From Interstate 5, take Exit 205 and head west on Frazier Mountain Park Road. This two-lane road changes names several times as it ascends into the San Emigdio Mountains, passing forested slopes and epic canyon views along the way.

After about 42 miles, you’ll meet California 166. Take a right here and then a left on Soda Lake Road to enter Carrizo Plain National Monument. Drive northwest for 35 miles to the parking lot for the Soda Lake Trail, a short boardwalk that gets you up close to the park’s salt-crusted lake. If you plan ahead, you can also book a guided tour of Painted Rock, a sandstone outcrop with Native American rock art.

Hungry? Head back the way you came, take a right on California 166, and drive west 15 miles to the Cuyama Buckhorn , a renovated ’50s motel, restaurant and bar. The eatery’s Santa Maria-style tri-tip is superb, and if you grab a room, you can turn this scenic drive into a full weekend escape .

Volcan Mountain and Julian This route will take you to Julian , a mountain town famous for its apple orchards and delicious pies. From Interstate 15, take Exit 58 for California 79. Take a right on Pechanga Parkway and head south. The road becomes Pala Temecula Road and emerges into a wide canyon with mountains towering on either side. Take a left at Pala Mission Road and continue east on California 76, which hugs the San Luis Rey River before ascending more than 1,000 feet up a chaparral-covered ridgeline.

After some hairpin turns, the road levels off and skirts Lake Henshaw, a picturesque reservoir. Take a right on California 79, and after 10 miles, take a left on Wynola Road. Follow that road for about 3.5 miles, then take a left on Farmer Road to arrive at Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. Stretch your legs on the Five Oaks Trail , a 1.2-mile path that ascends the western flank of Volcan Mountain and offers sweeping views of the orchards below.

With your appetite revved up, head south on Farmer Road into Julian and make a stop at the Julian Pie Co . Grab a well-deserved slice of apple pie and some apple cider and rest your feet at a picnic table while you chow down.

3 things to do

Dolphins swim beneath the surface of the water beyond a pier

1. Race plankton in Manhattan Beach In celebration of Earth Day, the Roundhouse Aquarium will hold a day full of educational activities inside and outside its facilities. Highlights include dolphin spotting, a fish feeding, crafts, games, a “shark shack” and, yes, plankton racing. The festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go until 4 p.m. The event is free, but be sure to register ahead of time at roundhouseaquarium.org .

2. Go gardening in San Pedro Give back to the land by planting native species, removing weeds, mulching and watering the White Point Nature Preserve’s garden with the folks at Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy. You’ll also have the chance to enter a raffle and take a guided nature walk. As a bonus, refreshments will be provided by Starbucks to keep you cool and hydrated. The three-hour event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday. All volunteers under age 16 should be accompanied by an adult, and all volunteers under age 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver at the event. Register at pvplc.com .

3. Stretch your legs on Venice Boulevard CicLAvia is back. And this time it’s shutting down a 5.75-mile stretch of Venice Boulevard that connects Palms, Mar Vista and Venice Beach for walkers, joggers, bikers, roller skaters, unicyclers, penny-farthings, pogo sticks — anything as long as it’s completely powered by humans. There will be three local hubs along the route where you’ll be able to partake in family-friendly activities, pump air into your bike’s tires, refill your water bottle and use the restroom. Be sure to reference CicLAvia’s digital map so you can scope out the local businesses you’d like to visit along the way. It all takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. For more information about the event and the area it covers, visit ciclavia.org .

Klamath dam removal critic Willian Simpson II holds a handful of dead, dried-out fish

The Klamath River in Northern California has turned brown and muddy, but that’s a good thing. As Times writer Ian James reports , it’s a side effect of the largest dam removal project in history, which aims to restore the river to its natural state. Four dams are being removed along the Klamath, and the river is passing freely through tunnels in three of them, draining reservoirs and churning up an estimated 2.3 million tons of sediment that had settled along the bottom of those man-made lakes. Although the turbid water might look ugly, restoration advocates and tribal leaders see it as a sign of healing. The muck is passing out of the Klamath, and new life — everything from salmon heading upstream to native plant seedlings along the riverbanks — will soon take its place.

Austin Reaves Q&A: Lakers travel stories, D’Angelo Russell’s free agency, LeBron James’ future, Anthony Davis, Nuggets rematch

best tour bus los angeles

On his path from an undrafted rookie to stardom with the Los Angeles Lakers, Austin Reaves has had many memorable moments in hotels, including a life-changing call to play in the NBA while in El Segundo, California, and avoiding a fire while playing for the Lakers at a Portland hotel.

“I was in there for probably two months and got a call from my agent ( Aaron Reilly ), and it was them offering me a regular contract that, for me, was the start of my journey, so the Residence Inn always has a special place in my heart,” Reaves said during a Hotels.com “Perfect 10” digital content segment .

Following his segment, Reaves spoke with HoopsHype and discussed how he travels privately during the offseason when booking hotels and flights, a wild travel story with the Lakers in Portland, what happens on the team flight after games, the possibility of being a Laker for life, D’Angelo Russell’s free agency, what he’s learned from LeBron James, why Anthony Davis should be in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation, and the chip on the team’s shoulder going up against the Denver Nuggets in a playoff rematch.

As an NBA player, how do you travel privately during the offseason when booking hotels and flights?

best tour bus los angeles

AR: For me, it’s not that hard because I kind of look like an average person. I can get around pretty well, especially if I’m wearing a hat or a hoodie. I don’t have to go too incognito, but it’s getting more difficult. Flying doesn’t bother me. With hotels, I’ve traveled spontaneously and gotten regular rooms. I came out to LA for the US Open on a last-minute kind of thing with my mom and my girlfriend, and we just got a place at the Renaissance by the hotel. It was great. For me, it’s not that difficult.

What are some funny or wild travel stories with the Lakers?

best tour bus los angeles

AR: The craziest one to me was when we were in Portland, and it was 20 or 30 minutes before we were leaving to go to the game, and the fire alarm started to go off. Fire alarms occasionally go off. They come over the intercom, and they turn them off quickly, but these kept going off. I was like, I didn’t want to be stuck in a burning building, so I got down the stairs and walked out. Everybody else in the building was going out, too. We went out the front, and our bus was leaving from the back from where our meal room was at the time. I think they finally turned the alarm off, but the security for the hotel wouldn’t let me go back there. It’s like how I was talking about before how I fit in with the regular crowd.

What happens on a team flight after an NBA game?

best tour bus los angeles

Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

AR: It depends on whether we win or lose. If we win, everybody’s happy, and you usually gamble a little bit and listen to music. If we lose, it’s a little more serious, and a lot of communication to try to get better. I think 95 percent of our lives are basketball, even if it’s not playing or being in the gym. You constantly talk about it. That’s what the flights are. If you’re going to a game, you’re talking about what you can do in the game to be successful. If it’s after a game and we lost, it’s what we could’ve done.

D’Angelo Russell told me in an interview he told you, “You’ll be here a long time.” What are your thoughts on potentially being a Laker for life?

best tour bus los angeles

Justin Ford/Getty Images

AR: Going into free agency this year, that was the main thing, which was to get back here (Los Angeles). The fans and organization are great. There’s so much history here. I want to try and chip into the history movement. It’s an unbelievable organization that gave me an opportunity that not a lot of people wanted to do. They took a chance on me and really helped me get my start.

D’Angelo Russell will be a free agent, and it seems like he wants to be back there in LA. What are your thoughts on his free agency and him staying with the Lakers?

best tour bus los angeles

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

AR: I want him to be around. That’s probably my best friend on the team. We hang out off the court and golf a lot together. We’re constantly in communication and play Call of Duty together. He’s been one of my closest friends since I’ve been in the NBA. Obviously, his basketball play speaks for itself with how talented he is and what he can do for our group. We need him to be at our best. When he’s playing at his best is when we’re playing at our best. Anything we can do or I can do to help him stay around, I’m definitely going to try to do that.

What have you learned from LeBron James, and how much longer do you think you’ll be able to learn from him because he said he doesn’t have much time left?

best tour bus los angeles

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

AR: I don’t know how long he’s got left. Obviously, he’s still putting up unbelievable seasons. He shot the three-pointer the best he’s ever shot it this year. He continues to get better in different aspects of the game. His mindset, IQ, and professionalism are probably things I’ve learned the most from him. I learned how to be a pro. He’s the first one in the gym and the last one to leave. He’s put himself in a good position to do all the stuff that he does. I’m more than certain that when he retires, I’ll be giving him a couple of phone calls throughout the year to see what he sees because he’s such a basketball guy that he’s always going to be watching. I believe our relationship is good enough to have those conversations and for me to reach out. At the end of the day, I really appreciate him because he didn’t have to accept me the way he accepted me.

What have you thought of this season for Anthony Davis?

best tour bus los angeles

Harry How/Getty Images

AR: He’s definitely lost in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation. In my opinion, he’s the best defender in the league. I can factually say my side of the story, but then you could look at the numbers of when he’s on the court and when he’s off the court with our unit and see the differences defensively for us. In my opinion, he’s the Defensive Player of the Year. He gets lost in that conversation. I don’t know for what reason. He played the most games he’s played in his career this year at 76. What we do wouldn’t work without him at all. He changes the game defensively so much. Offensively, every big man guarding him is always worried about him. When me and D’Angelo come off pick-and-rolls, we have more space and opportunity to create for ourselves and others because if I were another coach, my game plan would be not to let Davis catch the ball. What he does for us, I don’t think, gets talked about enough.

Some people said maybe the Lakers should lose and avoid the Nuggets. What did you think of that suggestion and facing the defending champs?

best tour bus los angeles

AR: There’s definitely a chip on our shoulder. They’ve beaten us I don’t know how many times in a row, and they put us out of the playoffs last year. There’s definitely a chip on our shoulder to go in and compete at the highest level and prove everybody wrong, basically. There were all these people talking about losing the Play-In game to end up playing the other game to get the eighth seed to play Oklahoma City. That was never even spoken about in our locker room. We wanted to make sure that we got into the playoffs first of all, and more than likely, you’re going to see them at some point anyway, so I’d assume you’ve got to beat them at some point anyway. That’s our main focus. Go out and compete at a high level and try to win this thing.
