WAXAHATCHEE
Woodland park zoo.
WAXAHATCHEE w/Woods ‘Tigers Blood’ by Waxahatchee One of the hardest working singer-songwriters in the game is named Katie Crutchfield. She was born in Alabama, grew up near Waxahatchee Creek. Skipped town and struck out on her own as Waxahatchee. That was over a decade ago. Crutchfield says she never knew the road would lead her here, but after six critically acclaimed albums, she’s never felt more confident in herself as an artist. While her sound has evolved from lo-fi folk to lush alt-tinged country, her voice has always remained the same. Honest and close, poetic with Southern lilting. Much like Carson McCullers’s Mick Kelly, determined in her desires and convictions, ready to tell whoever will listen.
This performance is sold out.

I saw a version of Waxahatchee where Katie Crutchfield played with Bonny Doon as her backing band. The songs sounded different from the recordings - not better or worse, just naturally different. Songs from "Out in the Storm" were a little more mellow than they were when I saw her in 2017. Overall, it was nice to have a live experience be different from hearing album tracks - sometimes it seems like bands almost become cover versions of themselves when they try to re-create recordings on stage rather than let playing live naturally change the songs. But what I love about Waxahatchee are Katie's voice and her lyrics, and seeing her live was special. This was the first time I'd seen her since really getting into her music, and her voice is just wonderful and powerful. Like with most indie acts, I wish she'd played longer (I think she just made it to 60 minutes). I'd love for her to copy the Mountain Goats' set structure where she plays maybe 30 minutes with a band, then plays a few songs solo, and plays another 30 minutes with the band. And then at least 3 songs in an encore! And then maybe one more song, if we've earned it...
Report as inappropriate
This really should be clearly advertised as a solo-Katie Crutchfield tour than a tour by Waxahatchee.
While it was a lovely, quiet gig - those who go expecting a performance by the full Waxahatchee band might be a little disappointed; as I was.
The venue was perfect; outside on a mild Miami night. Waxahatchee was also perfect.. the sound was mixed well, distinctive and clear for a small club. The band was also distinctive and clear.. love the songs and they were arranged and played just as you wanted.. these women can rock..

Waxahatchee Announces Her ‘Saint Cloud’ 2021 North American Tour Dates
When Waxahatchee released her stunning album Saint Cloud in late March of 2020, there was no way of knowing she would have to put her tour on hold indefinitely. But now, shortly after the one-year anniversary of the album, Waxahatchee has officially rescheduled her North American tour and unveiled its dates.
Bringing Saint Cloud on the road, Waxahatchee’s tour kicks off in September in Louisville and concludes a month later in Boston. Much of the album puts her sobriety at the forefront of the music, a decision which Waxahatchee discussed with Uproxx ahead of the LP’s release:
“I just was getting so tired and jaded about music in general. Not only the creative aspect of it, but the career of it and the scene and all of it. Every aspect of it was feeling tiring and dumb to me for a minute there. So I had to totally hang up the identity as a musician. There were things that I was thinking about and considering, like why do I do this? Why have I always been playing music? Why have I always been writing songs? Should I write a book? I was really back at the drawing board and needed to do a long, hard reflection on why I make music. After I did that for a while and really let myself forget what it felt like to even be a musician, I started writing this record. It’s given me faith in it again. I’m being reborn as this whole new thing.”

Shortly after celebrating the one-year anniversary of Saint Cloud with a deluxe edition, Waxahatchee has announced 2021 tour dates behind the album.
The trek kicks off in September in Louisville, Kentucky, followed by a performance at Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Katie Crutchfield will travel through the West Coast before heading to the East, including stops in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Tickets go on sale Friday.
The Saint Cloud deluxe edition contained the original album and Crutchfield’s covers of Dolly Parton, Bruce Springsteen, and Lucinda Williams. Following her initial interview with Rolling Stone on Saint Cloud, she recently looked back on the album with deputy music editor Simon Vozick-Levinson. “The record is so dark, but it’s so hopeful at the same time,” she said. “It’s talking about a lot of really heavy stuff with a lot of transparency, but the overall spirit of it is so warm and uplifting and hopeful that I feel like it hit people in a way that they maybe needed.”

More about Waxahatchee's upcoming album Tigers Blood
Crutchfield wrote most of the songs on Tigers Blood while on tour near the end of 2022. She reunited with producer Brad Cook, who also produced the previous Waxahatchee album, Saint Cloud, in 2020.
The 12-song tracklist of Tigers Blood has also been released and is available for pre-order via the official Waxahatchee website as well as online music stores like Bandcamp and Rough Trade.
Tigers Blood tracklist:
- Right Back to It
- Burns Out at Midnight
- Lone Star Lake
- Crimes of the Heart
- Tigers Blood
The lead single Right Back To It , featuring MJ Lenderman, was also released alongside a press release of the forthcoming Waxahatchee album and tour. Crutchfield wrote it backstage at Wolf Trap when she was on tour opening for Jason Isbell and Sheryl Crow . Crutchfield said:
""I'm really interested in writing love songs that are gritty and unromantic. I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a longtime love story. I thought it might feel untraditional but a little more in alignment with my experience to write about feeling insecure or foiled in some way internally, but always finding your way back to a newness or an intimacy with the same person."
Waxahatchee began in 2010 and is the brainchild of Katie Crutchfield. She created the project shortly after her pop-punk band, P.S. Eliot, which she formed with her twin sister Allison, disbanded. The name comes from Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama , which is where Katie grew up.
The next few months will be exciting for fans of Waxahatchee. Not only will they get a full-length project of brand-new material after 4 years, but they will also have the opportunity to see the singer perform live on her extensive tour across the United States.
